Brisbane crowds welcome Comm. Games heroes BRISBANE has opened its heart and city centre to Australia’s Commonwealth Games heroes. They were feted by lunchtime crowds and officials. Australia’s Commonwealth Games’ athletes were celebrated today, when the first of a series of street parades around the country kicked off in Brisbane City. The athletes’ bus arrived fashionably late,

caught in a Brisbane traffic jam. And just like the ‘inclusive’ Commonwealth Games our para-athletes were part of today’s celebration. Marathon star Kurt Fearnly, a crowd favourite, was surrounded by well-wishers. Today’s parade was attended by over 40 athletes, including teen sensation, swimmer Ariarne Titmus, who managed to get the day

off school. Matthew Denny, Hammer Thrower: “I’m having so much fun.” Leigh Skinner, Para Powerlifter: “Rockstars, we’re rockstars.” The streets of Brisbane were lined with fans and supporters excited to see their heroes. Vox: “Go Australia, we’re very proud of Continued on Page 12

From the Publisher WELCOME to May the last month of autumn in this side of the globe, Australia’s climate varies greatly throughout the eight states and territories; there are four seasons across most of the country and a wet and dry season in the tropical north. Australia’s seasons are at opposite times to those in the northern hemisphere. December to February is summer; March

to May is autumn; June to August is winter; and September to November is spring. Brisbane Indian Times and Australian Indian Radio have proudly supported many community organisations and event organisers with their events, there is a saying in Real Estate that for best results give me an exclusive agency and I will put in my one hundred and ten percent, as with an open listing no one puts in as much effort. When it comes to the Indian Community we have that fully covered via various mediums, yes it would make sense to reach out the wider and other ethnic community mediums rather than duplication. Well here goes my standard lines that it has been a busy time for us, never really changes does it?, but it is the truth, with the commonwealth games behind us, we embarked upon the civic reception of our sporting hero’s, what a wonderful feeling to a bipartisan support for a deserving celebration, I had the good fortune of

meeting so many of the athletes personally at the civic reception. On a different note, attending the Vietnamese National day of Mourning is a different experience, 30th of April marks the fall of Saigon, Dr Bui and his committee always conduct the ceremonies if a very orderly and dignified manner, representing Queensland Multicultural Council, together with heads of other organisation laid the wreath in remembrance. Anzac day Dawn service never ceases to amaze me with growing crowds every year at the war memorial shrine, the early morning drizzle failed to deter the patriotic gathering in a moving but coordinated ceremony. Indian veterans once again took part in the main Anzac Day Parade, doing us all proud, Lest We Forget. The spirit of remembrance continues with GOPIO Queensland hosting its annual “Girmit Diwas” on the 14th of May at Queensland Multicultural Centre.

Get inspired by Scotland’s endless beauty on ‘Walk & Write’ journeys

By Rama Gaind Here’s an adventure-writing experience and an amazing way to travel through which you’ll capture the scenic beauty of Scotland: as you walk through some of its most iconic natural, cultural and historical landmarks. This is surely a novel holiday as walking has proven to be an aid not only for managing modern-day stresses, but also for overcoming writers’ block. Imagine the picturesque lochs and windswept highlands of Scotland’s West Highland Way and you’ll realise why they have been a mecca for filmmakers for decades. The striking sceneries have provided the setting for many iconic films such as Braveheart, Trainspotting, Rob Roy and the Harry Potter series. Stretching through the southwestern Scottish Highlands, the West Highland Way is also one of the most popular long distance trails in the British Isles. Home to some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, the trail is set to inspire a whole new generation of creative minds in June 2018. Now you can do both with this package from UTracks, Australia’s active Europe specialist, which has partnered with journalist, author and travel writer, Stephanie Dale, to create a 10-day Walk &

Hindu Cultural Hub at Clayfield Courtesy: Dr Naren Kumar Narasimha Jayanthi is celebrated on the fourteenth day of the rising moon fortnight of the Vyshaakha month (the second month of the Indian New Year as per the moon-calendar). It is celebrated to honour Narasimha (Lord Vishnu’s man-lion incarnation), as it was on this day, he appeared to save the three worlds. The story begins with the killing of demon Hiranyaaksha (by Lord Vishnu’s Varaaha – Boar incarnation), who stole the earth into a watery nether world, to prevent the brahmanas from performing yajnas (sacrificial offerings to the Celestials). Hiranyaaksha’s elder brother Hiranyakashipu was enraged by his sibling’s death and vowed to destroy his brother’s vanquisher. Both brothers were the children of Sage Kashyapa. Hiranyakashipu performed a frightful penance (tapas), to please Brahma, the creator, for 100 celestial years (100 Deva samvatsara is about 12,960,000 earth years). Fire from his obstinate penance was burning the celestial, mortal as well as the nether worlds (Three lokas or worlds are Deva, Martya and Adho-lokas). To relieve from this torment, the Devas headed by Indra, went to Brahma and asked him to put an end to the demon’s wrath. Brahma accompanied by several divine sages, appeared before the demon and told him that he was pleased by his one of a kind determination and asked what he sought from him. Hiranyakashipu’s body was surrounded by countless anthills and most of his body had been slowly eaten by ants and other living beings, leaving only the bones. After being revived by Brahma, Hiranyakashipu praised Him and asked for a boon that made him immortal. Brahma declined it by saying that any animal once born, must sooner or later die leaving the mortal remains in the world in which it lived. The demon then asked for a boon (to cheat the possibility of his death), with the conditions that he must not be killed either outdoors or

indoors; neither during the day nor during night; not from another living being; not from any creature created by Brahma; not from any kind of weapon; neither on earth nor in the sky; not from Angel, man or demon; not from any kind of disease; not from any living or non-living being; he must become invincible in any war he wages; he must become the ruler of the three worlds; all celestial powers must be vested in him; and he must be happy from the result of this penance. Brahma granted him the nefarious bid and returned to his abode. Evil travels with power. So Hiranyakashipu took pride in destroying Vishnu’s devotees, tormented them miserably, and snatched all celestial powers from Indra and all other Devas. He was the sole ruler of the three worlds for 71 Mahaayugas (Kruta, Treta, Dvaapara and Kaliyugas running back to back 71 times, including a small transitional gap between each). Meanwhile, Hiranyakashipus’s wife, Kayaadhu, was pregnant when he left for penance for the long duration. Till then she held her baby in the womb and was protected from the Devas by sage Narada. A son was born named Prahlaada, who is a Bhagavatottama (great devotee of Lord Vishnu). He was singing in praise of Lord Vishnu and was staunch in his moves. His teachers tried to teach him otherwise, but in vain. Enraged by this, Hiranyakashipu tried to kill his own son by ordering his servants to kill him using various methods – killing by poisoning, throwing off a high cliff, drowning in the sea, trying to trample under elephants, piercing with sharp weapons etc. But all was in vain. Hiranyakashipu worried about this and wanted to execute his son himself. He dragged his five year old son to his court and asked him who was protecting him. Prahlaada said all beings are being protected by Lord Vishnu. Hearing this, demon’s rage knew no bounds. He asked, “Where is your Hari, the protector of the world”? Prahlaada replied that

the Lord can be seen anywhere we could wish. Then the demon pointed to a nearby pillar of this court room and asked whether Vishnu was in there. The son replied affirmative. The demon took a heavy mace and smashed the pillar, which split in half giving out a terrible sound. Through the crack appeared Lord Narasimha, who was having a man’s body with a lion’s head. He carried several Vishnu’s weapons in multiple hands. He had three eyes and his mane was all around his face and dropped till stomach. Blinding Golden light emerged from him all over. He fought with the demon for a short while till the sun was half down (twilight). Then he took the demon to the door step of his palace, stood on one leg with the demon held captive on it, and tore open his abdomen and garlanded himself with the demon’s intestine. The demon was killed and Devas showered flowers on Lord Narasimha. Thus the demon’s death wish was fulfilled. Due to the influence of the war, the Lord was in terrible fury and that itself became a torment to all. Then after all requests from Brahma and other Devas failed, Rudra appeared as Sharabha (dragon – see Sharabha puraanam) and fought with Narasimha and took away his anger. Prahlaada praised the Lord after being requested by Brahma and the others to calm down. Finally Narasimha was calmed and he bestowed great boons to Prahlaada and crowned him the King. This happened in southern India back then and the remnants can still be seen in the form of 9 Narasimha temples in Ahobalam in the states of Telangana, Andhra Pradesh. The remnants of the split pillar from which Narasimha appeared can still be seen nearby known as Ugrastambham.

The Lazy People are Saving the World Sadhguru, Isha Foundation

YOU being happy has got nothing to do with what is happening outside of you. Right now because your energies are so deeply enslaved to the outside, outside is deciding your inner happiness. Once it is like this, conflict is inevitable. Please see, the conflict in the world is just my happiness versus your happiness. We

may pretend that we are all brothers, but when our happiness is under threat we want to shoot the other man! If you are pursuing your happiness one way, if I am pursuing my happiness another way, if both of us meet, then out of your education and etiquette and politeness you say, “Please move away.” I refuse to move, then you would like to gently push me and go. I refuse to go, then you want to shove me and go. I refuse to go, then you want to shoot me. If you are already happy in your own nature and your life is an expression of your happiness; then there will be no conflict in the world. As long as you spend your life in pursuit of happiness, today or tomorrow there will always be conflict in this world. It does not matter how much you educate people, how much civilization you apply to them, they will fight.

If my happiness is within myself, if I have organized my energies in such a way that I am naturally happy, then whatever happens in my life, my happiness is never at stake and I will simply do what is needed for the situation I live in. There is no particular reason that I must be doing something, I can sit here without doing anything. If the situation demands, I will act and if the situation does not demand, I will sit quietly. In your pursuit of happiness, please see, you are just burning up the whole planet. Fortunately, 50% of the world consists of lazy people. If all the 7 billion people were very industrious like you, this world would not last for even ten more years, it would be finished. This world is existing not because of the industrious people, it is existing because of the lazy people. They are the ones who are really saving the world.

These so-called industrious people with good intentions and absolute stupidity are uprooting the world in so many ways. They have great intentions for people, but if their intentions are fulfilled, the world will not be left. So don’t be in pursuit of happiness. Know how to express your happiness in the world. If you look back at your life and see, the most beautiful moments in life are moments when you are expressing your joy, not when you are seeking it. Ranked amongst the fifty most influential people in India, Sadhguru is a yogi, mystic, visionary and bestselling author. Sadhguru has been conferred the "Padma Vibhushan" by the Government of India in 2017, one of the highest annual civilian awards, accorded for exceptional and distinguished service.

Second Pravasi Kavi Samellan

THE second Kavi Samellan in Brisbane was organised by Mrs Soma Nair of Paramount Productions and sponsored by Indian Medical Association. The Kavi Samellan was held at Queensland Multicultural Centre 102 Main Street Kangaroo Point on 5th of May. Many talented and some budding poets from all over Australia took part in the Sammelan. There is a growing interest in this field, many smaller Mushaira type events are often organised but the larger coordinated events such as this one are far and few. Well coordinated events require lots of resources, human and capital both. Indian Medical association’s sponsorship backing and the expertise of Paramount production makes this event a cut above. Queensland Multicultural Centre is a 8 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, May, 2018

good venue for such an event. The Kavis( poets) chose their own topics and style of presentations. Overall a very commendable effort, providing a platform for willing artists, choice of language remains challenging when it is an “All India” Sammellan, with so many regional languages of India, one tends to express him or self better in their own regional language. This Sammellan was mainly Hindi, but we saw a glimpse of Punjabi and Haryanvi with a bit of Marwari . The event was hosted free of charge and patrons were treated to refreshments during interval and vegetable biryani at the end of the show. A very enjoyable evening indeed, the foundation has been laid, we only have to build.

Lakshmi – The Goddess of Fortune LAKSHMI also written as Laxmi is the goddess of fortune, wealth and prosperity. She is the spouse of Lord Vishnu, the preserver, and maintains an abundance of resources for Him to discharge His specified responsibilities of caring for the world.

Ram and Krishna, Lakshmi descended on the earth to become their spouse. The union of Vishnu and Lakshmi as husband and wife is enunciated as a model for the bride and groom in Hindu weddings. Women are normally referred to Lakshmi of the house.

Lakshmi is also an important deity in Buddhism and Jainism. Vasudhara, the Buddhist Bodhisattva, displays characteristics similar to that of Lakshmi. In Jain holy texts, Lakshmi is adored as a symbol of wealth, royal power and opulence. Her statues and images are common in Jain temples.

Having appeared from the ocean, Lakshmi is known as a daughter of the ocean. Other objects that appeared from the churning are described as her siblings.

Lakshmi is known by many names that specify her attributes. Lakshmi Sahastranam, a collection of a thousand names of Lakshmi, forms a part of the Skanda Purana. “Shree” is another popular name of Lakshmi. Lakshmi’s popularity can be appraised by the fact that Shree is used in the beginning of a person’s name. Shreeman or Shreemati are honorific prefixes before male and female names respectively. Mahalakshmi and Vaibhavalakshmi terms are also used for Lakshmi when specific characteristics are glorified. Lakshmi has a close association with the lotus flower that underlines their common source of origin as well as similarities in their physical beauty. Lakshmi has been a prominent female deity since antiquity. Hymns dedicated to Her such as Lakshmi-sukta and Shree-sukta are found in the Vedic texts. Shatapatha Brahmana, an ancient Vedic text, refers to Lakshmi in its story of creation. Lakshmi as a deity of wealth and prosperity is mentioned in the Upanishads. The Puranas, especially Vaishnava Puranas, contain stories related to Lakshmi. In the Mahabharata, Lakshmi personifies wealth, riches, beauty, happiness, loveliness, grace, charm and splendour. In the Ramayana,

Lakshmi appeared with a lotus in her hand and so she is also called Padma. According to the most popular story, Lakshmi appeared from the cosmic ocean during its churning jointly by Devatas, the deities and Asuras, the anti-deities. The churning was undertaken to obtain Amrit, the nectar, which was to be consumed by participants to make them immortal. In addition to the nectar and Lakshmi, a number of other valuable objects appeared from the churning, which were distributed to deserving personalities In the form of Mohini the enchanter, Vishnu was able to dispense the nectar among the deities only, denying it to non-deities. Impressed by the valour and ingenuity of Vishnu, Lakshmi accepted Him as Her husband. During incarnations of Vishnu as

Lakshmi is portrayed as a beautiful woman, gracefully dressed in red attire, bedecked in ornaments, seating or standing on a lotus flower. She is generally depicted with two or four hands. When shown with two hands, She holds a lotus flower in one hand and issues golden coins with another. When depicted with four hands, She holds lotus flowers in two hands, a golden pitcher in the third hand and issues golden coins with the fourth hand. In many photos, two Airavats, the elephants that also emerged from the churning of the cosmic ocean, flank her sides and sprinkle water beside her. Lakshmi is portrayed in a multitude of different postures and designs. Her vehicle is an owl, which signifies the importance of being alert, carefully observing all surroundings and working quietly and wisely to achieve one’s objectives and good fortune. Diwali, the festival of light, which is celebrated on the last day of dark fortnight in the month of Kartik (October – November), is dedicated to Lakshmi. It is believed that on this day Lakshmi visits her devotees who keep their house clean and illuminated, and bestows them with prosperity and good health. During Diwali, Lakshmi is worshipped along with Ganesh. It is believed that when

Lakshmi endows wealth and prosperity, it makes the devotee egotist and arrogant. The presence of Ganesh near Lakshmi counterbalances the negative effects of wealth. Lakshmi is described as Chanchala or restless. She does not stay at one place for long. Her standing position denotes her readiness to move away. The fickle character of Lakshmi relates to the nature of wealth, which continuously changes hands. Being the spouse of Vishnu, Lakshmi has special significance among the followers of the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism. They believe that Lakshmi is the divine power that transforms dreams into reality. She is Prakriti, the self-contained nature. She is Maya the delightful delusion, the dreamlike expression of divinity that makes life worth living. She is Shakti, energy, boundless and bountiful. Temples dedicated to Lakshmi and Vishnu, normally known as Lakshmi Narayan Temple are found all over India and in many other countries. During the previous century, an Indian industrialist named GD Birla built a number of modern Lakshmi Narayan temples in Indian cities including Delhi, Jaipur and Bhopal. They are also popularly known as Birla Mandir. Lakshmi is worshipped in Lakshmi Narayan temple along with Vishnu. The Mahalakshmi temple in Mumbai is exclusively dedicated to Lakshmi. The Ellora caves in Maharashtra contain stone carvings of Lakshmi with Vishnu. These temples, caves and other sites are major attractions for devotees as well as for tourists from around the world. More information on Hinduism will follow in the next edition of BIT. Awadhesh Sharma

Changes to the Employer Sponsored Visa Streams THE employer visa schemes have had many recent changes. The Department has introduced various reforms to the 457, ENS and RSMS streams since April 2017. Recently, the long-anticipated March changes came into effect on 18 March 2018. These changes saw the abolishment of the 457 Visa, which was replaced by the TSS (subclass 482) Visa, along with significant changes to the ENS and RSMS streams. The Department of Home Affairs has made regular changes to the employer subclasses in order to re-focus the skilled migration programs to ensure applicants’ are meeting the needs of skills shortages. Many visa applicants’ are unaware or unfamiliar with the new changes and what applications they will now be eligible for. The TSS (Temporary Skills Shortage) is comprised of a short-term and mediumterm streams. Each stream has different eligibility criteria in relation to the available occupations, renewal options and English score requirements. The TSS Visa has even introduced a Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement. Skills Assessments are now also required for many occupations and Labour market testing is now a requirement for almost all applications. The RSMS visa, now like the ENS visa, requires 3 years work experience within the relevant occupation. There has also been changes to occupation eligibility, minimum salary and age requirements. Although the main changes were implemented on 18 March 2018, others, such as the initiative for new mandatory standard training contributions, are yet to be introduced. The industry professionals at Migration Guru can advise further of all the current changes and how this will affect your eligibility for these visa subclasses.

It has never been more important for applicants’ considering their visa eligibility to seek the professional guidance of experienced migration agents. It is crucial that applicants’ who are considering applying for a visa understand these changes to avoid adverse results, which may have dire consequences on future visa application options and cause financial loss. India's best train journeys By Dhaval Vyas, Ahmedabad, India INDIAN Railways have entranced dreamers, intrigued authors and inspired filmmakers. That’s because there’s no other railway like them on Earth. With 18 million daily passengers, 1.4 million employees and 17,000 trains operating on 64,000 kilometres of track, it’s a locomotive pick and mix of sizes, speeds, shapes and colours – and that’s just the passengers. The Indian Railways would have a few tales to tell. Planning a vacation rarely encompasses a train

expedition nowadays. But if it does, it certainly takes us back to the childhood days when holidaying meant travelling in a train. It also meant admiring the changing landscapes as the train passed through towns and villages; playing cards or memory game; chitchatting over warm tea in earthen cups (locally called Kulhad); yummy munchies and lot more! This time round, we take you on some of the most fascinating train routes in India that cover absolutely enthralling and diverse landscapes – steep mountain slopes, narrow valleys and wide seas. Go through the

Show of the Millennium by Magic Moon Entertainments SNEHAPOORVAM - Manju Warrier & Friends - A Unique Epic show Directed by the Legendary G Ashok Kumar who successfully directed many High Profile Shows & Award nights in India - first of its kind in Australia included Classical Dances, Bollywood Dances Soothing Gazals by Manjari, Mesmerizing Melodies and Electrifying fast numbers from yesteryears to present by Madhu Balakrishnan, Naresh Iyer, Manjari, Young heartthrob Vaishnav Gireesh, Singing sensation Lakshmi Jayan, Mindblowing Magical Violin by Balabaskar, Prodigy of Indian Music Mohini Dey with her amazing Bass Guitar, Fusion Music by India’s top Musicians. THE FULL HOUSE Show in Brisbane was presented by Magic Moon Entertainments, Malayalam Events Australia and Malayalee Association of Queensland. The venue ERPAC is quite large and well suited for a show of this calibre, the stage set up and sound was superb. A lot depends on the sound; if the sound is no good then show is a flop. Often there is a tussle between Australian sound technicians and Indian Musicians, Indian musicians are used to a full spectrum sound, while Australian techies lean towards more conservative approach. In this show the talent of the artist was second to none, which coupled with a good sound and lighting made the show very energetic and

appealing. The flow was good without unnecessary commentary, never a dull moment as they say. A good balance of Dances and songs. The female Bass Guitarist Mohini Dey stole the show by her amazing and powerful performance, now don’t get me wrong all the musicians were very good, but she stood out. There was good audience interaction; artists need a responsive audience that is their fuel. Few of the local talents got a chance to share the stage with

such amazing artists. It was a jam-packed show, with so many artists, one after another, so there was something for everyone, real value for money, the seating arrangements and other event management aspects such as security, alcohol free , catering for patrons etc was coordinated well MM | ME | MAQ would like to express our thanks to Media Partners (Malayalee Patram, Sathyam Online, Australian Indian Radion and Brisbane Indian Times).

Annastacia Palaszczuk, Premier: “We really put on a world show here in Queensland, didn’t we?” Then Lord Mayor Graham Quirk honoured closing ceremony flag bearer Kurt Fearnley by handing him the

Keys to the City. Graham Quirk, Lord Mayor: “The greatest honour that we can bestow as a city upon any individual or group of individuals is the keys to the city.” The celebrations will continue around Australia over the coming week featuring local athletes and medallists in every State and Territory.

And guess what, you will have a bag full of cherished memories as return gift! 1. Jammu- Baramulla. The railway track connecting Jammu, Udhampur, Srinagar and Baramulla is not only picturesque and enthralling but also one the most challenging railway projects. It is located in the high earthquake intensity zone with undulating and rugged terrain and extreme cold temperature. 2. Kalka-Shimla. If you want to cherish picturesque valleys, steep pathways and foggy meadows, travel Shimla in the small gauge train. This little toy train, now considered as World Heritage Site by UNESCO, starts from Kalka and travels 95 km upslope through 101 tunnels: (the longest tunnel located at Barog), 83 bridges, deep valleys, steep curves, rolling bends, forests of deodar and rhododendron, pine and oak. Few trains like Siwalik, Kalka-Shimla, Himalayan Queen, Rail Motor and Shivalik Queen run on this route. The journey is truly enchanting but at a slow pace as the train ascends the slope rhythmically through stations of Dharampur, Solan, Tara Devi, Barog, Salogra, Totu, and Summer hill to reach the summer capital. It is one of the best north Indian train journeys. 3. Jaisalmer- Jodhpur. The Rajashthan trip which is otherwise full of colours, can have an extra bright shade if you travel to Jaisalmer from Jodhpur in Delhi Jaisalmer Express. The approximate travel time in the train called the ‘Desert Queen’ takes close to 5 & half hours to reach the destination. The journey is not at all monotonous. In fact you see very diversified topography like typical desert landscape with xerophytic vegetation, yellow soil, dunes, camels and scattered settlements of the desert inhabitants. The passengers will surely get a feel of the desert safari before reaching the land of the Golden Fort- Jaisalmer. 4. The Indian Maharaja. Mumbai-New Delhi. The Indian Maharaja is the country’s first luxury train, which means massive cabins which includes two Presidential Suites, a conference car that can be transformed into a dance floor, two restaurant cars, and of course, the spa car. Their longest route is eight

New Jalpaiguri- Darjeeling. days and takes you from Mumbai to New Delhi, via Rajasthan, going via the fort cities of Udaipur, Jodhpur and Agra. Think of this as a travelling in a 5-star hotel, with ever-changing history and architecture unfurling leisurely around you. 5. TamilnaduRameshwaram. Besides thrill and adventure, train travel from Mandapam in Tamilnadu State to Rameshwaram on Pamban Island oozes calm and serenity. It is certainly one of the top ten best Indian train journeys. One of the most beautiful train routes in India, it passes over the second longest bridge of India, the Palk Strait, which is the only route that connects mainland India to Pamban Island. 6. Mettupalyam-Ooty. Running since 1908, ‘Nilgiri Passenger’ still runs on steam engine, going from Mettupalayam to Ooty. As the train ascends the Nilgiri Mountain, thick pine, oak and eucalyptus forests, bends, curves and tunnels, it moves along Asia’s steepest track with maximum gradient of 8.33 percent. Nilgiri Passenger travels 26 km up the slope in almost 5 hours via stations like Kallar, Adderly, Hillgrove, Kateri, Runneymede, Kateri, Coonoor and Lovedale. 7. New JalpaiguriDarjeeling. The Heritage Voyage to the Summer holidays place of the colonial Indian era. A pleasant upslope journey from the foothill region through loops, turns and bends can be experienced from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. The 78 km long quaint journey takes almost 8 hours and passes through Siliguri Town, Siliguri Junction, Sukna, Rangtong, Tindharia, Mahanadi, Kurseong, Tung, Sonada, Ghum, Rongbul, Jorebunglow and Batasia Loop. Though the journey, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is sluggish but certainly leisurely. The surrounding hill-valley topography especially from Ghum (the highest narrow

gauge railway station in India) and Batasia Loop adds extra flavours of delight to your trip. 8. Chambal Express. AgraGwalior. Looking out into the stark ravines of Chambal brings up childhood stories of dacoits running wild over the dramatic, untamed and harsh landscape. The country outside your window looks like an inhospitable maze you could easily get lost in. As the Chambal Express chugs along, you can’t help but romanticise the brutality of which you’ve only heard stories. Although dacoits are near-extinct today, it’s still quite a thrill, not knowing what lurks behind the rocks. 9. Island Express. KanyakumariThiruvanthapuram. The little over two hour journey from Kanyakumari to Thiruvananthapuram is a short and sweet way to experience the green that Kerala, God’s Own Country, is so known for. The morning ride takes you through forest canopies, bathed in a cooling greenish light. Look beyond the hanging creepers and lushness to spot everyday life – women and men working in fields against a backdrop of little white-washed churches and tiny houses. 10. Hubali- Madgaon. While travelling from Hubli to Madgaon, experience one of the most thrilling and enchanting train journeys in India. The train passes through the gigantic and most magnificient Dudhsagar falls gushing out from a 300 metres in full vigor. Once the train reaches the waterfall, you will be amazed at the cascading beauty and force. If you decide to enjoy it closely, quickly get down at Londa junction, which is the nearest station to Dudhsagar falls. There are many more great Indian train journeys, which cannot fit all in here, so better visit & experience once. With 17,000 trains that cover 64,000 kilometres, the Indian Railways offer some fascinating experiences for the traveller. Call 07 3865 6533

Managing The Monkey Mind (Ancient Wisdom and The Science of Breath) By Dr M.S Anand, MBBS, MD, AFRACMA, FRANZCP, Clinical Lead, Adult Inpatient Mental Health Services, Gold Coast University Hospital, Gold Coast, Former Clinical Head/ Director of Area Mental Health Services, Counties Manukau Health, Auckland When the demand is greater than our capacity to meet the challenges of life we get stressed. When we have too many things to do and don’t have enough energy to accomplish tasks we have a tendency to get burnt out! We need to figure out ways to increase and conserve energy (Prana in Sanskrit and Chi in Chinese). Emotions that are connected to past events (anger, sadness, regret, guilt and blame) and emotions linked to future events (anxiety, worry, fear) drain us of our energy. We have never been taught how to handle our emotions and stress in schools and universities. Our mind constantly oscillates between the past and future and is never in the present moment. The secret to managing

stress and buying time is in our breath!! Breath is a powerful link between mind and body. There are specific rhythms of breath associated with emotions such as anger (rapid and shallow breath), sadness (dense exhalation) and relaxation (slow and deep breathing pattern). By learning various breathing tools and techniques (pranayama) we can learn to manage our mind and get rid of stress. We have read a lot of books

on The Power of Now. What makes the power in the now so powerful? Positive emotions and thoughts such as joy, peace, enthusiasm, clarity of mind, focus and productivity are at a maximum, the degree we are in the present moment.

The Science of breathing: The Sympathetic part of the Autonomic Nervous System is involved in fight vs flight response to

stressful situations. The Parasympathetic part of the Autonomic Nervous System is the reparative and defensive part of the body. Most of the vital organs such as the heart, lungs, the gastrointestinal tract, pancreas, liver and kidneys are innervated by the Vagus Nerve (Parasympathetic Nervous System). Interestingly, to achieve a state of relaxation and experience positive emotions and thoughts (via limbic system and fronto-temporal parts of the brain) we need to enhance vagal activity. It is

difficult to directly influence the vagal activity voluntarily via heart, the abdominal organs or the gastrointestinal tract. The human beings however have an interesting ability to directly influence the vagal activity through the breath!! Controlled breathing techniques (pranayama) regulate the speed of opening and closing of thousands of alveolar sacs in the lungs. The alveolar membranes send positive signals to the brain through the parasympathetic system (Vagus Nerve) initially to brain stem, in turn influencing the limbic

area (positive emotions/ relaxation) followed by the frontal area (the deductivelogical reasoning area) thereby improving our ability to make clear and precise decisions and enhance productivity. Mindfulness, pranayama and yoga help us to manage our monkey minds and experience the power of now!! The author is also a trained teacher/ facilitator of The Art of Living course. https://www.artofliving.org/ au-en

Inayatullah Khan Asghar: The Last of Allama Mashriqi’s Freedom Fighter Sons Passes Away By Nasim Yousaf IN the early hours of April 12, 2018, Allama Mashriqi and Wilayat Begum’s son, Inayatullah Khan Asghar, died. He was 84 years old. He was the last of the unsung freedom fighters from Mashriqi’s family; he was arrested at least twice during the independence movement of the Indian subcontinent (now Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh). During his lifetime, he crossed paths with all levels of society – from the working poor to the upper echelons. Asghar was born on August 25, 1933 in Lahore. Since his birthday was the same as Mashriqi’s, his parents named him after Mashriqi. In his youth, Asghar was part of his father’s Khaksar Tehrik (founded on August 25, 1930), which fought British rule in the subcontinent until the nation obtained its independence. As a young boy (in the 1940s), Asghar was arrested for parading in Khaksar uniform and promoting his father’s mission. He was sent to a Juvenile jail along with other boys. When the police brought him to court, the Magistrate told Asghar, “I have great respect for Allama Mashriqi and I am freeing you.” Asghar replied, “I will not leave the jail until you release all the other arrested boys.” The Magistrate was impressed at his courage and confidence. Knowing that the jailed boys were not criminals, he ordered their release. Thereafter, some other

juveniles also used Mashriqi’s name and sought their release. In 1947, Asghar was once again arrested. Jawaharlal Nehru came to know of Asghar’s arrest and on October 09, 1947, wrote a letter to Vallabhbhai Patel. Below is an extract from Nehru’s letter: “…I am told that among the Khaksar prisoners there is Allama Mashriqui’s son Asghar Inayatullah, aged eleven years. If this fact is correct, the boy need hardly be kept in prison. His sister is in the Jamia.” As an adult, Asghar emerged as a handsome and talented individual who was an outstanding communicator. In the 1950s, when he was in his early 20s, he was appointed as Deputy Director in the Government of Punjab in Pakistan. Six months later, he was promoted to Director. His rapid rise did not end there, as a few months later, he was offered an even higher position. Upon learning of this offer to Asghar, one of his colleagues jokingly remarked, “If you continue to be promoted like this, I am worried about Sikander Mirza [who was then in power], whom you could be replacing soon.” Asghar left government service for personal reasons and traveled to Europe. During his lifetime, he held various professions - ranging from Government servant to journalist to successful businessman. While in Europe, he launched an industrial

16 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, May, 2018

magazine entitled Today and Tomorrow. It was published from Netherlands and Norway. The publication promoted joint ventures between Europe and Pakistan and was well admired in Pakistan and abroad. Asghar had a wide range of connections with European manufacturers, industrialists, and businessmen. From Europe, he moved to New York and bought a mansion in an affluent area of Westchester County, where he continued with his business ventures. He held exclusive distributorship rights for the United States and some other countries from prominent corporations in Pakistan. I also have many personal memories of Asghar. Asghar admired Eastern culture and traditions and enjoyed going to festivals and meeting people at the grassroots level. When he visited from the USA, he used to stay with me (in Pakistan) and immerse himself in cultural activities. For example, we went to the famous Mela Chiragan at the Shalimar Gardens in Lahore, where he tasted all kinds of street food from chaat to seekh kebabs to dahi barras. Although Asghar lived abroad for years, his heart remained with his own people and land. Eventually, he moved back to Pakistan and lived in Lahore Cantonment and later in Defence Housing Society. He was blessed with caring children (four sons and two daughters) who visited him periodically. As a result of

Asghar’s advancing age, about five years ago, his eldest son moved to Pakistan to take care of him. His other children also remained actively involved. His caretaker, Zafar, also looked after him for over 30 years and became like family. Overall, Inayatullah Khan Asghar lived a full live. His only regret was that Pakistan and India buried the memory and tremendous personal sacrifices and contributions of his father (Allama Mashriqi) to the struggle for freedom of the Indian sub-continent. He lamented that even leading and well-respected historians and media of the East and West did not do justice to his father’s role or portrayed him negatively.

www.indiantimes.com

Asghar will be remembered as an incredibly friendly and kind-hearted person. On the night of his death, he was talking (per usual) with his son and daughters (who were visiting him from abroad). He went to bed late at night. At some point in the night, Asghar woke up his children and Zafar. After speaking with them for some time, he again went to sleep and passed away peacefully at about 5:40 am. On April 12, around 8:00 pm, he was laid to rest at the feet of his mother (per his desire) in Miani Sahib Graveyard, the same location where his other family members and the Khaksar martyrs of March 19, 1940 (who gave their lives in the fight for freedom)

are buried. His passing was condoled by people from all walks of life. It is sad to think that historians missed the opportunity to document his firsthand accounts and experiences from the freedom movement. With his death, a chapter of South Asian history came to an end. The author, Nasim Yousaf, is Allama Mashriqi’s son and Inayatullah Khan Asghar’s nephew. Mr. Yousaf has published a book entitled Allama Mashriqi’s Sons & Daughters: British India’s Young Freedom Fighters that includes a piece honoring Asghar’s role in the freedom movement. Arya Pratinidhi Sabha APSQ–Gayatri Mahayaj fundraising event of Queensland Inc. Trimup at Tankara

THE Vedic Trinity was indeed in full play when a new soul entered a body at Tankara in 1824. The Jeev Atma drew full inspiration from Parmatma and learnt the inspired divine knowledge that had been revealed at the beginning of the human creation, the Vedas, and grew up physically, emotionally, emotionally and spiritually. The Prakriti or the matter, as the third component of the Vedic Trinity had indeed its role to play on the soil of Tankara. The Jeev Atma that I am talking about was named Moolshankar and Tankara was then a small village in the native state of Morvi in Saurashtra, the present day Gujarat. What better example of the Vedic Trinity could there be than this one. Of course, Tankara triumphed and more than 12,000 people – men, women and children – assembled in that small place from 15th to 17th February 2007 to celebrate the Bodh Divas. The great day or to be more precise the great night was when the young Moolshankar, not yet a teenager, came out of darkness and attained spiritual enlightenment about the Almighty Himself. Looking at the vast multitude of young and old at Tankara I wondered what the motivating factor was that brought them there from all over the world. Their gleaming eyes, radiant faces and cheerful disposition spelt that they had achieved what they wanted. They had all come to the birthplace of Young Moolshankar who was later transformed into the great religious and social reformer, Swami Dayanand Saraswati. They had come to Tankara to assess their own spiritual advancement, to assess the failings and to find ways and means to achieve happiness and eventually, the ultimate goal, the Moksha. To help them achieve their aim of spiritual advancement the schedule of the three-day event was very well organised by the Shri Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati Smarak Trust and its able trustees led by Shri Brij Mohan Munjal and Shri Ramnath Sehgal. The latter, as secretary was the driving force behind the mammoth celebrations and the logistics. Indeed, it was not an easy task to house, feed and to minister to the spiritual needs of over twelve thousand people for more than three days.

The Spiritual Schedule

The day began rather early in the Brahm muhurth with the long ringing of the big brass gong and that signaled it was time to leave the bed. To encourage the reluctant

ones a couple of volunteers went around with honking horns and singing a song Uth Jaag Musafir bhor bhaye, ab raen kahan jo sovat hai. They also announced that it was time to assemble at the central point of the campus – the Mahalaya to proceed on Prabhat Pheri. Low and behold, a big crowd had assembled with big saffron flags on which AUM in Devnagri was inscribed in bold relief. They sang Bhajans and also songs paying tributes to the great Rishi, Dayanand Saraswati, who unfolded the Vedas and brought them to the reach of the common man, irrespective of caste, creed and faith.`` Dhanya hai tujhko aai rishi, Tune hamen jaaga diya So so ke lut rahe thae hum, tune hamen bacha liya The Prabhat Pheri went through the lanes and by-lanes of sleepy little Tankara inhabited by about 15,000 people. The bleary eyed local residents were impressed with the marching men and women who had come from all parts of Bharat and even from lands across the seven seas like The United Kingdom, United States of America, Kenya and other parts of the world. After a quick breakfast of healthy cow’s milk and cereals we all assembled in the impressive and imposing Yajnashala. After the devastating earth quake when the previous Yajnashala was completely razed to the ground, the new one came up as a magnificent structure, thanks to large donations by faithful Aryas, the engineering skill and perseverance of stalwarts like Guru Dutt Tiwari and Ramnath Sehgal, the present Yajnashala was constructed. It is a dream come true. Sandhya, followed by Havan and Pravachan was presided over by Acharya Ramdev. Bhajans were sung by a celebrity Bhajnik Satpal Pathik and a budding talent Narendra Vashishth. The Bhajans literally lifted the spirits many notches. Sermons followed. Of course, they were not heavy, therefore, the audience did not doze off. The role of Master of Ceremonies was very ably performed by Ajay, the Editor of Tankara Samachar and a young trustee of the organisation. He did so on all occasions, big or small, without fear or favour. Its the way you finish Pastor Joseph Dass DEAR reader, it is with great joy we bring to you The Word of God. Once again we will look at the subject of mistakes, guilt and shame. So often when people take a wrong turn in life, they get down on themselves. They wish if only things had turned out differently. It looks like you have missed the best plan for your life. This is how

Adam felt when he disobeyed God and ate from the fruit of the forbidden tree. Like Adam, they get discouraged. They stop pursuing their God given dreams. But you have to understand that just because you have taken a wrong turn in life, doesn’t cancel God’s best plan for your life. He never writes you off. He never leaves you or forsakes you. In the scriptures (Genesis chapters 12-21) we read how God told Abraham to leave his father’s house and depart for a new land God was going to show him. In this new land

18 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, May, 2018

God was going to bless him with possessions and make him a great nation. God was going to give Abraham and his wife Sarah children. While living in this new land, and after waiting with no children, they decided to take matters in their own hands. Soon after, Abraham had a son through Sarah’s maid Hagar. Now there was trouble and strife between Sarah and Hagar. Abraham and Sarah had been impatient, and now they were in a mess, they had not obeyed God. But God intervened and promised Hagar that her son Ismael

would be turned into a great nation. That Abraham and Sarah were still going to have a son named Isaac. Even though Abraham and Sarah had taken a wrong turn, God did not write them off or changed His plan for them. Here are 3 things we can learn from our mistakes or when we take wrong turn in life. • Everyone makes mistakes in life, but God never intended that you pay for it for the rest of your life. That’s why Jesus says “come to me all you who labour and are

www.indiantimes.com

heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11v28). Our mistakes can be like a load but God helps us to off load so we can move on. • Just because you made a mistake, your mistake does not have to make you. Gods plan has always been that we obtain His mercy, by acknowledging our wrong doings. The scripture says “Humble yourselves, therefore under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your cares on Him, for He cares for you.”

• God’s mercy is bigger than your mistake. You make a big mistake, God has a bigger solution. God has fixed it all for us beforehand. That’s why the scripture says “He has saved us and called us to a holy life-not because of anything we have done but because of His own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time.” Our faults, failures, poor choices don’t have to keep us from our God given destiny. For with God it’s not about the way you start in life, it’s about the way you finish. Receive His grace today and embrace the great future He has in store for you. God bless you. Call 07 3865 6533

We did not stop a NZ resident from attending his mother’s funeral - Director of Immigration By Anamika Singh

THE Director of Immigration has confirmed they did not stop a New Zealand resident from attending his mother’s funeral in Fiji last month. Former Fiji resident Shailendra Raju says he was stopped by the Department of Immigration from attending his 70-year-old mother’s funeral who had passed away on the 26th of last month. Raju says he had enquired with the Director of Immigration, Nemani Vuniwaqa about a stop departure against his name through his lawyer, Rajendra Chaudhry. He says he was astounded to receive a reply from Vuniwaqa stating a stop departure was active against his name because of a 2005 divorce matter and a warrant issued in 2005. Raju says that the divorce matter was settled in 2005. He says he has also travelled to Fiji 14 times from 2009. Raju says he plans to take legal action against the Prime Minister, the Attorney General and the Director of Immigration.

However Director of Immigration Nemani Vuniwaqa has told Fijivillage that when they verified the case, they came to know Raju’s name was on the Controversial List. He says they had also enquired with the High Court because it was a court order from 5th July, 2005. He says the Controversial List is a database of what has been presented to the Department of Immigration by the respective courts for people to not be allowed to leave or enter the country for various reasons. Vuniwaqa says for Raju to say he was stopped from coming to his mother’s funeral is absurd, because the Immigration Department did not say that. He says they got confirmation from the High Court that the court order was still intact, and Vuniwaqa states that the order has not been revoked. He says if Raju is claiming the case was dissolved in 2005, he needs to go to the High Court and get verification. He says in their reply to Raju’s legal representative, Rajendra Chaudhry, they had advised that Raju could enter the

country and there was nothing stopping him from attending his mother’s funeral but there might be problems in him leaving. Vuniwaqa says for them to remove names

from the Controversial List, it has to come in the court order, but with that being in place they would still have to stop Raju from leaving.

HIGH Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo has found Timoci Lolohea guilty of murder. Justice Temo concurred with all the three assessors in the trial who also found Lolohea guilty. Lolohea killed his 23-year-old defacto partner by stabbing her with two knives on 20th March last year at Nasilivata Street, Nadera. Justice Temo stated that the defence of provocation does not apply as there was a lot of time for the 56-year-old to cool off after finding out about his defacto partner's affair. He adds that mental illness does not apply as no evidence was given regarding that. While summing up the case, Justice Temo stated that the prosecution's case was that Lolohea intended to kill his defacto partner. He adds that the defence case was that Lolohea was provoked by the deceased into

killing her. Justice Temo also stated that the defence relied upon mental impairment however the law does not give a blanket cover for those suffering from mental illnesses. He says Lolohea in his evidence said that he was physically and mentally fit every time he returned from an overseas tour. Justice Temo stated that as per Lolohea's evidence, he had never sought psychiatric help but instead he drowned himself in alcohol. The prosecution has sought a mandatory life imprisonment with 30 years as a minimum term to be served before a pardon can be sought. Defence lawyer Lisiate Qetaki has sought for 15 years as a minimum term to be served. Justice Temo then said that in the colonial time, people were hanged for murder. Lolohea will be sentenced at 12pm today.

JESUS is Good, Pleasing and Perfect for 2018 Key Scripture: Matthew 6:26 (NIV) Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Why Worry...?

Dear Reader, We are excited to bring you the greatest good news on this planet. Our theme simple and clear. It is to make God real and personal. And to make God very Real Person so you can kern to know His nature and relate to Him. God is not an object or an image or imagination of human mind. God is a living and loving person. We find this amazing revelation in the pages of Holy Bible. Keep reading with an open heart and humble spirit. You will encounter your Creator today. You don’t need a thousand years for your Salvation (Mukti). You can receive your greatest miracle ‘Mukti’ today. This is the confidence you can have in Christ alone. The Creator of the universe is also Creator

of the Birds of the air. He has commanded us to learn some key lessons about living life free from worries and anxieties. Do you worry about your work, your family, your health or finance? Here is direct instructions from the Life Manual (The Holy Bible) written for all human beings; past, present and future generations can learn and live well. If we can learn to understand and apply the truth written in the Holy Scriptures, we learn to eliminate worries and worship our Creator in Truth and Spirit.

What is worry? Worry means to think or imagine about problems or unpleasant things that may potential happen in the future. It is also a mental distress and anxiety of the soul about an impending situation.

First, we must recognise that worry has ill effects on our body and soul. The Maker and Author of Life, Lord Jesus knows that worry is going to cripple you from reaching your God given potential. Here are few ill effects of worry: 1. Damage to your health 2. Disruption to your productivity 3. Disconnection in your ability to trust God 4. Darkened affect in the way you treat others 5. Door that may lead to depression Jesus gives a simple but a significant remedy to turn your worry into a genuine concern that will help you to move into an action. First, let us look at the life style of birds of the air. Don’t look at the birds that live in the cage. Birds of the air simply don’t know how to worry. Have you ever seen a bird depressed and sad? Have seen a birds sowing for a harvest? Have seen a bird sting food for the winter season? The answer is a big “NO”. Birds of the air know how to trust God for all their needs. That means we can learn to trust God for all our needs. For our family or work problems or anything else that causing you to worry. We need to put God first in all our daily activities and priorities. Learn to love all people

and forgive those who have done wrong to us or offended us. That is the way to seek God and His way to live a life free of worries. When you learn to trust God through a personal relationship in Christ; The following good effects are evident in your life: 1. Vibrant health in body and soul 2. Productive and Creative mindset 3. Continuous Connection with God 4. Healthy relationship with others 5. Songs of joy that leads you to worshiping God in Truth and Spirit Therefore, we invite you to pray this with a sincere heart; “Dear Father God, today I thank you for your word that has touched my heart. I repent of my wrongs and I confess with my mouth ‘Jesus is Lord’ and I believe in my heart that Jesus died for my sins, God raised Jesus from the dead for my Mukti (Salvation). Now help me to know Jesus more and more so that I can grow in the knowledge of your grace and mercy. Teach me your ways so that I can be person who will learn to honour you and learn to love each other. Amen. Please email to us your encounter experience, so we can help you to grow in the understanding your Creator and Redeemer. navig8grace@gmail.com

Satyanarayana Puja on Bhajan day - Friday 18 May at Helensvale Community Centre, 31 Discovery Drive from 7pm onwards. Shree Satyanarayan Puja is worship dedicated to Lord Vishnu (the Preserver), one among the great Hindu trinities, the others being Lord Brahma (the Creator) and Lord Shiva (the Absorber). ‘Satya’ means truth, ‘Narayan’ means the highest and ultimate form of “being” signifying the worship of truth. The puja, performed since ancient times, dates back to the Skanda Purana (holy text), where it is written that a Hindu sage, Narada asked lord Vishnu the mantra or the

way to end the miseries of the people on Earth and was informed that the worship of Lord Satyanarayan will be the ultimate way of happiness and moksha (liberation) in this Kaliyuga (current period per the Hindu calendar). This Puja is considered very holy and hence it is considered very auspicious and beneficial for everyone to do, so as to succeed and fulfil our desires, improve physical and mental health and move towards spirituality. The puja protects us and moves us to the path of goodness and truth. Please book on our website to participate in the puja. www.GoldCoastHindu.org • Asato mā sadgamaya - From ignorance,

Vice President Naidu reaches Guatemala The Vice President was received by the Foreign Minister of Guatemala, Sandra Jovel and the Ambassador of India to Guatemala Sajeev Babu Kurup at the airport. He inspected a guard of honour on his arrival in Guatemala City. Naidu is on a five-day visit to Latin America’s Guatemala, Peru and Panama commencing from May 6. This is the Vice President's first overseas visit after assuming office last year. He is accompanied by a highlevel delegation, including Minister of State (MoS) for Tribal Affairs Jasvantsinh Sumanbahi Bhabhor, four Members of Parliament and senior officers

of the Government of India, as said in a press release issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on May 3. A range of bilateral issues including the strengthening of institutional mechanisms for political interactions, multilateral matters, trade and commerce, investments, information technology, capacity building, traditional medicines, space, defence, and culture are expected to be discussed during his visit. The Vice President is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with the Guatemalan President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the Guatemalan Parliament and the Mayor of the city of Antigua

Guatemala, which is an ancient city near Guatemala City. The discussions are expected to focus on mutual areas of cooperation. Some of the sectors also likely to be discussed also includes protection of wildlife. A very good example is the protection of Jaguar population in Guatemala, along with the tiger population in India on human resource training and development. India have already provided ITEC training courses in Guatemala. An interest in learning English from India and information technologies will be an important area of focus and of exchanging know-how on

training institutes. The visit will enhance the existing relations between India and Guatemala. Guatemala is the biggest country in Central America in terms of population and economy. It has a population of 16.6 million. India-Guatemala relations have traditionally been cordial and friendly over the years. The bilateral trade has grown consistently and within few years, it has grown from USD 152 million to USD 263 million. The visit of Naidu is the highest ever from either side, which is a special marker. It will focus on exploring various areas of mutual cooperation.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina to meet PM Modi in West Bengal on May 25 PRIME Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina would be in West Bengal for a two-day visit on May 25-26. During her visit to Shantiniketan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be there and the two leaders will meet. This would be yet another opportunity when Modi, Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would be together. While there is a lot of speculation on if there would be any forward movement on 'Teesta' river agreement, senior sources in Bangladesh government are quick to remind us of the statement made by the Indian Prime Minister in April 2017 when he promised an early solution to the vexed issue of Teesta water dispute. "I firmly believe that it is only my government and excellency Sheikh Hasina, your government that can and will find an early solution to Teesta water sharing," he told the visiting Bangladeshi Prime Minister after the bilateral meeting. With elections due end of this

Sheikh Hasina will be meeting PM Modi on May 25 year in Bangladesh, Sheikh in Shantiniketan for the Hasina is feeling the pressure convocation ceremony of the to deliver on the Teesta front university as he is the Vice and her West Bengal visit, Chancellor. where she would be meeting PM Sheikh Hasina will also PM Modi, CM Mamata visit Asansol on May 26 to Banerjee and it could be one receive an honorary doctorate last ditch effort to ensure the from Kazi Nazrul University. deal is clinched. She will be accompanied by Prime Minister Sheikh Mamata Banerjee. Hasina will be inaugurating Highly placed sources in the newly built 'Bangladesh Bangladesh have told India Bhawan' Tagore Museum in Today that there are a few Shantiniketan on May 25 in priority areas for the Hasina the presence of Prime Minister Modi and the West Bengal CM administration before she goes in for elections this year. Mamata Banerjee. Signing of Teesta Agreement The visit was planned Bangladesh believes that this on May 25 because Prime Minister Modi would be should happen at the earliest.

One source went to the extent of saying that "the quantity of water is not as important as signing of the agreement". Also, emphasising on the importance of Modis pledge, sources said that Bangladesh depends on the Centre in India and not on Center-State relations within India. "Teesta is a matter of mindset", said someone from Bangladesh who thinks it could have a huge impact on the polls there. Killings at the border The killing or ill treatment of Bangladeshis at the border is a cause of huge concern to Dhaka. Although the incidents have reduced drastically, a source said that even one death at the border leads to massive anti-India sentiment in Bangladesh. Mostly, they are found to be smugglers or illegal intruders, but it still should not amount to killing. "They should be caught and tried or handed over to be tried by Dhaka," said an official. The issue of illegal immigration in Assam The growing chorus on tackling illegal immigration

or immigrants by the current dispensation in Assam has become a matter of great consternation for the Hasina administration. Sources say that while Bangladesh is dealing with a huge influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, any pushback of people from Assam could lead to huge anti-Hasina sentiment and massive outrage against India. This is an issue that has to be dealt with sensitivity after the elections are held in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Hasina is visiting India in an election year. For all the dividends that India reaped from the action she took against insurgency, sources say it is time that New Delhi reciprocates. Since she came to power in 2009, she showed zero tolerance to terrorism and according to Bangladesh, India owes it's peaceful, insurgency-free eastern front to Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh also wants the Modi administration to understand the import of Khaleda Zias BNP returning to power. It could reverse all the efforts made to keep the borders tranquil and thwarting

of Pakistan's efforts to use Bangladeshi soil against India, according to a highly placed source. On the issue of growing Chinese influence in Bangladesh and the country joining the 'Belt and Road Initiative' (BRI/OBOR) of China, Bangladesh has made it very clear that Hasina government is looking at the interests of its own nation but will not do anything at the cost of India. Explaining the importance of development, Bangladesh implores all to invest there to keep the markets competitive and healthy. Sources told India Today, "If Modi can talk to China then why cant Bangladesh. Prime Ministe Modi went to China for the interest of his own country and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is doing the same." At the end, Bangladesh strongly believes that there has to be political will to stand by each other and in this neighbourhood politics, the 'TINA' (There Is No Alternative) factor looms large. India needs Awami League in Bangladesh.

India approves death penalty for rape of girls under 12 NEW DELHI (Reuters) India’s cabinet on Saturday approved the death penalty for rapists of girls below the age of 12, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an emergency meeting in response to nationwide outrage in the wake of a series of cases. The executive order, or ordinance, amends the criminal law to also include more drastic punishment for convicted rapists of girls below the age of 16, government officials said. The order, a copy of which was seen by Reuters, will come into effect once it is signed by India’s president. India launched fast-track courts and a tougher rape law that included the death penalty after a gruesome assault on a young woman shocked the country in 2012, but India’s rape epidemic has

shown no sign of dying down. There were 40,000 rapes reported in 2016. The victims were children in 40 percent of those cases. Every day, newspapers carry fresh stories of sexual violence against women. The latest outpouring of national revulsion came after details emerged of the gang rape of an eight-yearold Muslim girl in a Hindudominated area of Jammu and Kashmir state. Local leaders of Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party had appeared to offer support to the men accused, adding to the public disgust. Protests around the country were also prompted by the arrest of a lawmaker from the BJP last week in connection with the rape of a teenager in Uttar Pradesh, a populous northern state that is governed by the party.

34 — THE BRISBANE INDIAN TIMES, May, 2018

More recently, a sexual attack on an 11-year-old girl was reported in Modi’s home state of Gujarat. The postmortem revealed the girl had been tortured, raped, strangled and smothered.

Negative Perception Modi’s failure to speak out soon enough during the latest bout of public anger fueled criticism that his government was not doing enough to protect women. With a general election due next year, Modi moved swiftly to remedy that negative perception by holding the emergency cabinet meeting as soon as he returned on Saturday morning from an official visit to Europe. The cabinet also prescribed measures for stronger punishment and faster trials in rape cases, a government

document seen by Reuters showed. In cases of the rape of a girl below the age of 16, the cabinet increased the minimum punishment to 20 years from 10 years. The penalty for the rape of women was raised to 10 years from seven years. The document made no mention of the rape of boys or men. India’s judicial system has been unable to keep up with the growing number of rape cases. The cabinet also recommended mandatory completion of rape investigations within two months and advised that trials should also be completed in two months. “Government has taken serious note of incidents of rape in various parts of the country,” the document said.

Construction on the Wynnum Road corridor upgrade is underway CONSTRUCTION is underway on Brisbane City Council’s $128 million Wynnum Road corridor upgrade, with reduced speeds and traffic changes commencing tomorrow (Friday), to facilitate works. Infrastructure Chairman Cr Amanda Cooper said the Wynnum Road corridor upgrade would tackle traffic congestion and boost safety for motorists, by widening Lytton Road from four to six lanes between Latrobe Street and the Canning Bridge, and additional congestion-reduction measures through to Riding Road. “The Wynnum Road corridor carries more than 56,000 vehicles every day and is a critical link between the city and Brisbane’s bayside, however, is currently one of the city’s slowest arterial corridors with average speeds of just 25km/hr during the morning peak period,” Cr Cooper said. “Council’s Stage 1 and Stage 1b upgrade of the Wynnum Road corridor will reduce travel times by up to 50 per cent, and form part of our $1.3 billion investment into more than 90 road upgrades to get people home more quickly and safely.” Cr Cooper said that most construction would be based on the river-side of Lytton Road over coming months, with construction east of the Canning Bridge starting in 2019. “Traffic changes and a reduction of the speed limit to 40km/hr through work areas for the duration of the project will

come into effect from Friday 20 April, to ensure the safety of road users and workers,” Cr Cooper said. “From tomorrow, changes to traffic access for local streets will also be in place for the start of road works, with access to Stafford Street, Northcote Street and Walter Avenue to be restricted to leftin/left-out only from Lytton Road and the intersection of Eskgrove Street and Lytton Road will be permanently closed. “Night works, between Park Avenue and Canning Bridge, are also commencing this weekend and will continue until late June, to relocate existing services and remove tram tracks from the existing road pavement. “While construction works will take place between 7am and 5pm, night works will also be required to occur out-of-hours when the traffic is at its lowest volumes, for both the safety of motorists and to minimise traffic delays. “Demolition of a former commercial building at 96 Lytton Road is continuing, to allow the dangerous intersection at Heidelberg Street to be re-aligned. “Over coming months, three fig trees and six palm trees will be relocated within Mowbray Park, as part of our commitment to retain this mature vegetation.” For more information about the Wynnum Road corridor upgrade, which is due to be completed in early 2020, visit www. brisbane.qld.gov.au or call Council on (07) 3403 8888.

Capital city dwelling November 2012 while regional dwelling values continue to edge higher

National dwelling values nudged 0.1% lower in April, the seventh consecutive month-on-month fall since values started retreating in October last year according to the CoreLogic April home value index results out today.

Similar to consecutive previous months, CoreLogic head of research Tim National dwelling values nudged 0.1% lower in April, the seventh found that the declines were concentrated within the month-on-month fall since values started retreating in October Lawless last year according largest capitals, while regional dwelling values edged 0.4% to the CoreLogic April home value index results out today. higher.

Similar to previous months, CoreLogic head of research Tim Lawless found that the declines were concentrated within the largest capitals, while regional dwelling values edged 0.4%higher. Capital city dwelling values were 0.3% lower over the month, driven by larger falls of -0.4% in Sydney and Melbourne and a smaller decline in Brisbane values (-0.1%). The falls were offset by flat conditions in Perth and subtle rises in Adelaide (+0.1%), Darwin and Canberra (both +0.6%). Hobart was the only city where dwelling values rose by more than 1% in April. On an annual basis, the combined capitals recorded the first decline in dwelling values since late 2012, with values slipping 0.3% lower, driven by falls in Sydney (-3.4%), Perth (-2.3%) and Darwin (-7.7%). The only capital city to see an improvement in annual growth conditions relative to a year ago is Perth, where the rate of decline has slowed from -3.0%last year to -2.3% over the past twelve months. A reversal of longer term trends Mr Lawless said, “At a macro level, the latest trends are virtually the opposite of what we have become used to over the past five or so years. Regional areas are now outperforming the capitals and units are outperforming houses. Also the most expensive properties are now showing weaker conditions than the more affordable ones.” Regional areas now outpacing the capital cities The past five years has seen combined capital city dwelling values appreciate at the annual rate of 6.8% which is almost double the annual rate across the combined

regional markets at 3.5%. The past twelve months has seen capital city dwelling values fall by 0.3% while regional values are 2.4% higher. Unit values outperform house values Similarly, capital city detached house values have recorded an average annual growth rate of 7.3% over the past five years, while unit values were up 5.5% per annum over the same period. Mr Lawless said, “Despite the surge in unit construction over recent years, the past twelve months has seen unit values continue to trend higher, up 1.9%, compared with a 1.0% fall in house values.” More affordable housing stock has been resilient to value falls Across the most expensive quarter of the market, dwelling values have increased at almost twice the pace of the most affordable quarter over the past five years, up 8.2% per annum compared with 4.4% per annum. As conditions have slowed down, it’s been the most affordable end of the housing market where values have remained resilient to falls, trending 1.9% higher over the past twelve months while the most expensive quarter of properties has seen values fall by -1.6%. Trends across capital city sub-regions: Although annual capital gains have slowed to 3.7% across Melbourne, many of the city’s sub-regions still dominate the top 10 for growth in dwelling values over the past twelve months, with six of the top ten located around Melbourne’s outer metropolitan areas. While Hobart tops the list for best growth over the past twelve months at 12.7%, three of Melbourne’s subregions (Melbourne West, Mornington Peninsula and

IN these testing times of financial stress while everyone is talking about savings every cent, be it on the live fuel watch, cheaper groceries, online shopping to save a dollar here or there. But amid these penny savings most Australians overlook their largest bill that’s really worth serious review, as the savings on this bill alone could be equivalent to savings on hundreds of smaller bills. I am talking about the mortgage repayments, which takes upto 50% if not more of the household income. Why Australians aren’t keen to switch their mortgages despite huge variation in interest rates charged from one bank to another? The Standard Variable interest rate charged most including 4

big banks, for an owner occupied home loan is 5.22% per annum whereas the offers from many smaller banks for the similar product starts from 3.59% per annum. Almost 35% cheaper, its better than woolies weekly specils, isn’t it. Yet, Aussies are reluctant to switch banks and its not their fault. Every time they have to switch they have to go through the gruesome, costly and daunting process of applying the loan with the new bank to provide a pile of supporting docs to prove their borrowing capacity, when they have already passed the actual test of paying the mortgage for years and years yet they may fail to pass on the paper again and the bare minimal cost to switch is $800, including $365 govt mortgage registration fee.

Astrology Aries (21st March to 20th April): As the month begins, you are engaged in work and hobbies. With Venus in your 3rd House, your social life is rocking. Meeting some influential people shall add considerably to your contact list. On 3rd or 4th, you are in a dilemma. What’s on your mind – and in your heart? Well, whatever it is, don’t let it affect you too much! Love is in the air, and ones in it will be on cloud nine. Guard yourself from injuries, though. In the domain of your relationships, things may not have been great. On 7th, you are thinking a lot about this. Manage your anxiety. Is a dream relationship on your mind? Well, no one is perfect; the ones who run after perfection often feel shortchanged, reminds Ganesha. Mars, your Sign ruler, moves through your House of Karma (10th House) with retrograde Saturn, making you restless. Put the energy to constructive use. Spirituality and creative hobbies are good ideas on 12th and 13th. Soon, Mercury and Venus exchange Signs – bringing positive momentum for the realm of family life, finances and material possessions. You may also spend time partying. 17th sees Mars moving to Aquarius – your 11th House. What a relief! Alas, it’s temporary – or can be misleading. Mars meets Ketu here; you may, in fact, have to be extra careful now, watching your back. Nonetheless, there will be an extra dose of energy in the zone of friendships, gains and social connections. Keep an eye on your coffers, though, and don’t trust anyone new too soon. Around 19th, Venus moved to Cancer – your 4th House. You may be going home – a special childhood place, you cherished. There is a sea of emotions; you feel sensitive, maybe you are in love with a long-lost friend. On 22nd, there is a distinct duality to your thoughts. This is a positive time for married ones, with conception on agenda. A revelation – a simply truth of life – comes to fore in month’s last week. You have been not spending time, or too less of it, with your loved ones and family. Not done! Have you been ignoring domestic matters? Mend your ways. As the month ends, Venus is still placed favorably; take time out to follow your heart’s desire. Lovers may not be ready to commit, as yet, while the work for most remains in certain disarray. Taurus (21st April to 21st May): Are you worried about an ongoing issue in your committed or married relationship – or a business partnership? Keep a tactful approach – and open your mind to others’ responses. Maybe, you will stumble upon the reason behind the troubles. Do not let these stresses affect your health, especially around 4th and 5th. 7th is all about keeping up your hope and enthusiasm high – even if there are roadblocks or frustrating delays. Don’t lose hope, for nothing is lost, assures Ganesha. A planetary battle is causing this chaos; things shall surely get better soon. Watch your finances; don’t trust anyone new with details and dealings. 10th through 13th, friendships, short-term flings and bedroom action bring you happiness and respite. Have you been speaking too much lately? Well, blame it on Mercury, traversing from your Sign. Thankfully, all this loquacity is quite clear and intelligent. 15th is not very promising, but 16th surely is – use it to plan ahead. Mars fills you with verve, determination and energy from 17th. Just don’t overdo anything! Orators and speakers will be benefited, and for some of you, social limelight brings joy. On 20th, family interactions bring happiness - but also trifle irritations! Is someone pressurizing you to get married? Love it is - right? An old friend has caught your fancy, it seems. As Goddess Venus now moves in your 3rd House, expect your communication skills and social relations to back you. Around the same time, mighty Sun shifts to Gemini – your 2nd House. Family matters and finances get bathed in sunlight. Inheritance matters come to fore. Your stance remains candid and analytical, in all likelihood. Creative activities and friendly banter through newage electronic media will take up your time and attention. Don’t let this make you careless about your responsibilities, warns Ganesha. 28th brings a flutter of unease in your zone of marital or committed relationships. Ones engaged to be married may actually be re-thinking their equation. Business partnerships may run into confusions. Answers will come, only when you talk and discuss! As the month ends, your destiny is on your hands – don’t expect cosmic cushions. Health regimes must be kept in top shape. Gemini (22nd May to 21st June): Get yourself out of the complaining mode, as the month begins. Take time to nurture your relationships. Forgive and forget! And, find balance - focus on your work, go to parties, attend a musical night- in short do everything that will keep you away from negative thoughts, and at the same time will help you in mending fences. 5th and 6th are great days for getting back to your family. With Saturn retrograde in your 8th House now, things may not be easy – but you will surely sail through with some tact, patience and grit. Keep striving and working hard, without waiting for immediate results. On 8th and 9th, be considerate and open minded, when it comes to your exchanges

with your siblings, relatives or cousins. Make extra efforts to calm down your mind and body from 10th through 13th – you are vulnerable, so stay guarded. 14th sees Mercury, your Sign ruler, joining Sun – in your 12th House. Are talking a lot? Well, no harm there – as you are eloquent and impressive – but may also be garrulous and exaggerated. 16th sees you planning for future. Mars joins Sun and Mercury in your 12th House – on 17th. Now, for over a fortnight, you have to be extra careful – guarding your inner self – steering clear of wastage and losses. Your family may act very demanding now, or you may end up overspending, while traveling. Health plays a spoilsport, around 19th or 20th. Be quick in addressing the issue. 21st brings a calming vibe. Sun also now moves to your Sign, bringing you some rewards and recognition. Cosmos still tells you to NOT show off or flaunt, reminds Ganesha. 22nd and 23rd are good days for love and romance – even married folks stand to benefit, provided they do something special to surprise their partner. Work continues unabated, but be vigilant, before taking any risks. Thoughts of making extra money – quickly – weigh on your mind on 28th. Don’t do something foolish! 29th and 30th are not very harmonious. There may be issues in marriage, committed relationships or business partnerships. Health also continues to remain fragile. Be positive. Cancer (22nd June to 22nd July): Are you happy with what you are doing? Do some soul searching as the month begins. Stay a little low profile, and center your energies. Stay guarded from injuries and health issues. Love comes to your rescue, when you feel down – so don’t ignore it, when it comes calling. As a married one, if you are ready for a little bundle of joy, there can’t be a better time than now! With two major planets Jupiter and Saturn in retrogression, things may seem, somewhat, stuck or stagnant. But, nothing is as troubling as your own apathy and listlessness. Get back your joiede-vivre, says Ganesha. Influence of exalted Mars over your Sign and your 10th House will help you. Expect professional efforts to bring good results. Steer clear of unethical practices, though. In a special relationship, are you being a commitment phobic? Well, you best know the right answer to this situation. Around 14th, Mercury moves to your 11th House – and joins Sun. Gains, rewards and friendly benefits come your way. Don’t miss out on the joys that personal relations and friendly interactions bring you. 17th tells you to be extra careful guarding yourself – for almost a fortnight from now. Mars moves to your 8th House. Stay away from extreme emotions; conserve your energy. Do not trust anyone new, before verifying their credentials. Keep a calm head; stay away for alcohol or drugs. 20th and 21st are good days. The good times bring along a shopping wish. Given the Sun’s presence in your 12th House (Gemini), it is likely that you may be in two minds, about purchasing something expensive. Be careful! Also, be on guard in inheritance or legal matters. Married life or business partnerships may remain under the shadows of retrograde Saturn. Sometimes, staying silent is better than speaking your mind, hints Ganesha. Health must not be ignored. 28th or 29th bring some gains. Use these positive days to further your creative interests. Work keeps you busy – but happily, so does love, as the month ends. Leo (23rd July to 22nd August): Work has kept you quite occupied lately; well, don’t expect that to change anytime soon. Nonetheless, stars bring you a love bonanza, as the month begins. Have you been planning to propose to a sweetheart? There’s no better time than 1st, 2nd or 3rd. Married ones don’t get any respite, though, simply because, it seems they are not ready to budge. Take some time away (even if metaphorically), if nothing else seem to work. 5th and 6th leave you susceptible to health issues. Stay guarded! 7th and 8th see you immersed in tasks related to higher authorities, government or semi government sectors. The limelight falls squarely and completely on the work zone for a few days. But, this is a good distraction – as a buzzing work sphere takes away your mind from a tumultuous personal life. Ones running partnership businesses may also face the cosmic wrath. As planets are retrograde, it will be best to keep major decisions on the back burner for now. Material gains accrue. 16th brings a calming vibe; slow down, and sit back to reflect – and plan ahead. 17th sees Mars moving to your zone of marriage and partnerships. Sexual currents buffet your intimate relations – but there also is a risk of flared tempers and over aggression. Take what is positive; sieve out what’s not. On 20th, Venus moves to your 12th House. Pleasure, comforts, hedonistic pursuits – all attract you – but go slow! On 21st, are you being too overbearing? Ask yourself and change your attitude. Soon, your Sign ruler Sun enters Gemini - your 11th House, bringing you happiness from your social and friend circle. It seems the cold and harsh atmosphere of the last few days is about to change – for better. Plan a nice dinner! 28th sees you immersed in home and domestic matters. Someone close – a parent – may tell you upfront about their

disapproval of your ways. 29th and 30th are days when you have to guard against temptations. In your bid to enjoy physical pleasures, do not forget the ground realities. Take stock, and address pertinent issues, as the month ends. Virgo (23rd August to 22nd September): Sitting, peering outside the window – a pen and diary in your lap and a steaming cuppa, waiting to be sipped? Well, this looks like an ideal beginning to a busy, buzzing month ahead. Don’t be worried about what others think of you. Long distance travels are foreseen. Technology plays a major role at this time. At work, 3rd and 4th are hectic days, but on 5th and 6th, your mind is surely filled with thoughts of love and intimacy. 7th, most likely, isn’t one of your best days, so don’t schedule anything important – or creative. This faculty of yours is a bit laggard now, as Saturn traverses in a retrograde motion in your 5th House. There may be issues in a meaningful, important relationship – something to do with work, marriage or social bonds. Steer clear of verbal squabbles and open confrontations. But, detachment is also not the answer! From 9th through 14th, Venusian influence in 10th House tells you to re-organize and beautify your work surroundings. Don’t fall in love at work, chuckles Ganesha! Are you already? 14th and 15th are happy days; there may be gains, new ideas, forward momentum and creative activities. Do find time to rest and relax! 16th is a good day to plan about skill upgradation. On 17th, Mars moves to your 6th House – and starts influencing your 12th too. Aggression, force, drive, energy abound. Stamina building and sporting activities are favoured. However, do watch out against ruthlessness and injuries. Plan any work related to government sector or senior authorities, post 21st. Now, Sun moves to your 10th House. Some of you may have to travel abroad for business/ work. 23rd and 24th are when you may go overboard spending. Watch out! Health still needs care. Around 25th/ 26th – Venus moves to your 11th House. It’s time for parties, friends and fun! 28th is all about grand ideas, spirituality – but it may all be in your mind. Some of you may now be in a rebellious mode – ready to revolt against elders/ society, who come in the way of your love. At home, your sibling needs your support and attention. As the month ends, stay poised to take advantage from stars, which indicate gainful times. Libra (23rd September to 22nd October): Stars remind you that your self-worth is greater than your bank balance, as the month begins. Develop your personality and spiritual side. Short term travel for business puts your persuasion skills to full use on 3rd and 4th. Something is gnawing at you – as the negative workplace vibes leave you unhappy on 5th. Forget everything and enjoy the peace that love brings on 6th. Back to material plane on 7th and 8th, you seem to hate everything about the way things have been moving. Saturn and Jupiter both are retrograde now, and this, to speak bluntly, is a challenging time. So, muster your patience and tact – and trundle along, says Ganesha. Address issues with tact and intelligence. Family expenses rise. Thankfully, Venus now moves to your zone of fortune, bringing you support from unexpected sources. Are you unable to say what’s on your mind – or in your heart – on 14th and 15th? Your mind may also keep wandering somewhere – far and confused. Blame it on Mercury’s movement through your 8th House – in exact opposition to retrograde Jupiter. Students may have a troubling time in month’s second half. On 17th, Mars enters Saturn-ruled Aquarius – your 5th House. It now casts its shadow on Sun and Mercury in your 8th House. Be very careful, especially guarding your safety and health. Injuries are likely. You will, nonetheless, be impressive and strong. Do not let this make you arrogant or careless, though. 21st and 22nd are great days – Sun is granting some of your wishes now. Venus also spreads it calming influence on your professional and karmic zone. Creative fields tend to gain the maximum from the Venusian influence. As for your personal life, something or the other may continue to keep you at your wit’s end. Be as soft and diplomatic, as you can! Family expenses and expectations take up your time and attention on 28th. Keep your cool – as there’s nothing to worry. A stable work front will leave you with enough time to mingle and party. As the month ends, you feel attracted towards someone impressive. Ones waiting to tie the nuptial knot will have the cosmic nod. Scorpio (23rd October to 22nd November): Plan to hone your skills through an advanced course – or by sitting down with a trusted ally, charting future strategies – as the month begins. In a relationship, what is stopping you from taking the equation a step ahead? Is your unstable financial status giving you the jitters? Well, sit down on 3rd or 4th – and face these pertinent issues. If you are planning to have a baby, since long take the advice of a fertility specialist. Under relaxing weekend vibes on 5th and 6th, don’t end up overeating. Thoughts of enhancing your lifestyle fill your mind on 7th. Ensure all your analytical faculties are working in top order, if there is a major business or legal deal is underway. 8th and 9th are all about

www.indiantimes.com

home affairs. Don’t get too bold, when taking financial decisions. Ruler of your Sign Mars is exalted, and traverses through your 3rd House, along with retrograde Saturn. You will be full of energy and verve in social interactions. However, don’t be too hasty or careless. 12th and 13th bring cosmic favour for ones in love. On 14th and 15th, you will be expressive in your intimate or married relationship, albeit a bit headstrong and detached. 16th brings a more positive vibe. On 17th, the ruler of your Sign Mars moves to your 4th House. You get the necessary drive and push from Mars, helping you achieve something significant that concerns your home or heart. Some of you spend time playing or chatting excitedly. Just don’t say anything aggressively. On 19th and 20th, an inspiring cosmic light guides you ahead. Venus now moves to your 9th House. The overall mood will be soft and emotional; expect luck to side with you. Sun, however, now moves to your 8th House. You are thinking deep! Although you get chances to make money, you must remain vigilant – and should not indulge in unethical practices. 23rd and 24th give you a chance to showcase one of your newly acquired talents. Ones interested in flings and short term relations have the planetary support. On 28th, you are powerful and strong. Planets seem to be willing to let you have your way. Ganesha hopes that you will steer the tide in a constructive direction only. It’s a good time to give your heart and soul to your creative passion. Ones pursuing a love interest may finally get an answer – in affirmative. Rejoice! As the month draws to a close, do not overindulge in food or drink! Sagittarius (23rd November to 21st December): Love and respect yourself for what you are, because it’s only when you value yourself that you can achieve big in life. In your bid to be better, bigger, fitter, richer – don’t go overboard. Unexpected expenses may cause worry. Plan your investments with long-term benefits and returns in mind. On 3rd and 4th, caught up in financial matters, you hardly have time to focus on personal goals. Are you being a commitment phobic on 6th? On 7th, don’t think too much. Pick up the phone and speak to this person. Overall, the planetary tussle is quite high voltage now, so expecting much will be fruitless. In your House of Finances and Family – retrograde Saturn is joined by the transiting Mars. This creates a push-pull effect, as these two, obviously, are not on agreeable terms. Avoid promising someone a loan, or even taking one yourself from the bank. Be your gentlest best on the home turf. Watch your health. 14th and 15th are resultoriented days; your efforts to buy a home may yield results. You will be intelligent and expressive at work. There may also be a heart-to-heart, even if slightly harsh, chat with an authority figure (at work, most likely) – as Sun traverses through your 6th House. 16th is all about trifle, every day matters. Take it easy, as planetary buzz may leave you exhausted. An old health issue can crop up; be careful. 17th sees Mars moving to your 3rd House. It’s time for parties and social outings, but don’t over-indulge. Be there, when your sibling needs assistance. You are lazy and relaxed on 21st. Working from your comfort zone is on your agenda – for now. You will share an intense chemistry with your beloved. Fireworks are in store! It’s a good time for hobbies and creative activities too. Spirituality and love for occult are also indicated. 24th and 25th are about committed or permanent relations. You may be a bit arrogant; know when to shut up, warns Ganesha. Guard your health. On 28th, you are in a religious or spiritual mood. There may even be some ceremony at your home. 29th is all about fresh hope and new ideas; you are a verbal powerhouse on 30th. As the month draws to a close, enjoy the vast and beautiful – and, not to forget, limitless sea of surprises – the life is! Capricorn (22nd December to 20th January): Keep your wits about you, while dealing with tricky personal or business equations, when the month begins. Employ your magnetic charm and intelligent persuasion skills to the hilt – but be soft and polite. Influence of Venus over your 12th House makes you self-indulgent and extravagant now. A shopping trip over the weekend may burn a hole in your pocket – go easy! Instead, seek relaxation and pleasure in a hobby or creative activity, suggests Ganesha. 7th and 8th see you being a busy bee – something you just nail it, as always. Retrograde Saturn and exalted Mars move through your Sign. This planetary activity keeps you restless and confused. Work may not let you breathe easy too. Slow down, and if nothing else, have some mercy on yourself. You are naturally vulnerable to health issues – so don’t ignore this vital aspect. Don’t let a personal hurt percolate to the deeper recesses of your mind or heart – clear it there and then, and move on. Around 14th or 15th, trinity of Mercury, Sun and Moon gathers in your 5th House. As these also get influenced by Jupiter (from 11th House) - expect a gainful time. Intuitive and intelligent, you make for great company midmonth. Look around – opportunities for gains and everything else - abound. Ones willing to set a date for marriage have the stars in their favour! Same goes for ones keen on conception. 17th sees Mars moving to your 2nd House. For a fortnight from now,

you have to reign in your flaring tempers – in everything to do with finances and family. 21st and 22nd may bring some trouble in your marital paradise. Differences in opinion may creep in your closest relations. It’s a delicate time. Something that appears wrong at the moment - will begin to make sense soon – hence avoid major decisions. 24th and 25th re-train the limelight on your work front, while 27th and 28th may be all about a personal scuffle. Are you battling it out against elders, who are against your decisions about marriage or something significant? Well, even though the planets support you, if you take a major step now – it would be best take your well-wishers in your confidence, says Ganesha. Monthend is a good time schedule interviews and presentations. Aquarius (21st January to 18th February): As the month begins, do not let the slow pace of progress and achievements distress you. Remember, life is like a weighing balance, when something is up, another side goes down a little. There are blessings around – recognize them and be grateful, says Ganesha. There have been troubles on the love or relationships front, and on 3rd and 4th, the onus is on you to make things right – even if just by a bit. Address trifle disagreements with tact, affection and compassion. On 7th, a lot is on your mind; it’s time to keep ‘the glass is half full’ approach. Does detachment seem an easy way out on 8th? Well, it will only make the matters worse. And an extra marital affair now would be the last straw! Presence of two strong planets in the 12th House from your Sign is indicative of wasteful pursuits and an increase in expenses. Be careful, or you may suffer a loss – monetary or emotional. Guard your health. On 14th and 15th, a lot is going on. Chaos ensues! But, there’s lots that’s positive here. Matters of home, love and relationships come to fore. There may be a recognition waiting for you. Don’t let purely material and worldly pursuits distract you - from the sublime little nuggets of pure happiness. 17th and 18th may be useful days for ones hoping to buy their abode, or those who seek a home loan. Around the same time, Mars enters your Sign, bringing a fresh dose of energy and positivity. The cosmic alignments of the next few days are sure to bring you life’s goodies. Enjoy, while this lasts! However, overindulgence in anything shall be best avoided. Sun’s influence now will help you shine in creative activities and hobbies. Finances remain stable. Love comes knocking, albeit briefly. Don’t let your commitment phobia take away the charm of this lovely time. 28th brings a new or important work responsibility. Take challenges, if any, in your stride, says Ganesha. Business and trade prospects get a boost. Mercury enters your 5th House, as the month ends. Stay poised to take advantage. Pisces (19th February to 20th March): Begin the month on a positive note, even if the growth you had envisaged is nowhere to be seen. Saturn and Jupiter (your Sign ruler) both are retrograde, so things may not move as you desire – but with your dedication, determination and consistency, you will sail through. 3rd and 4th bring some gains. 5th and 6th are as laden with love as they are with the possibilities of your feeling unwell. Visualize and see how you – just like a happiness magnet - would attract only the best vibes, says Ganesha! 7th is not all that great – but it holds a vital lesson. Look closely. For a few days now, money, windfall, gains - shall be yours, provided you make use of the chance that falls in your lap. However, some drama in your personal life may distract you. Are you not in tune with what others want? How would then they be receptive to your demands? In work and business, some travel infuses the much needed charm and revenues, around 11th and 12th. You have all your mental faculties on your side on 14th and 15th. Mercury connects with Sun in your 3rd House. It’s a great time for students – and also the ones, whose professions require them to memorize and learn by rot. Expect eloquent conversations, and a nice time with siblings or old friends. Travel will be rewarding, so don’t say no when an opportunity surfaces, around 16th or 17th. At the same time, Mars moves to your 12th House. So driven, you’ll be about shopping that you may end up burning a hole in your pocket, chuckles Ganesha. On 19th and 20th, you are feeling some extra love for your home. Looking forward to some solitude, as you indulge in your favourite creative arts? However, work may keep you tied up for long hours. Be extra careful about health and safety from 22nd through 29th. In love - someone way out of your league entices you. Are you falling for your boss? Be careful! On 28th, you are thinking about money, a new education course, higher learning or maybe something philosophical. You have to follow up your plans and dreams with real, hard work! As the month ends, Mercury moves to Gemini – your 4th House. You are applying logic in a domain, where usually emotions tower. Certainly a noteworthy change!

BOLLYWOOD & ENTERTAINMENT

Meera - When unbridled faith turns to the greatest love of all...

….I DREAM, I dream bold, loud and free. What’s a point in dreaming a calculated, practical dream. If dreams are caged in world calculations, then they shouldn’t be termed as dreams. Most of the people today, under worldly pressures, responsibilities, so called, “in the race to survive and thrive”, they get lost. Their own self identities get lost or sometimes even die. They train themselves into “PERFECT HUMAN BEINGS” – where every single thought is perfectly weighed and calculated. Their dreams, aspirations, acquaintances, friendships are all aptly measured by customizing monetary outcomes and benefits. Their physical getups, costumes, hair, makeup, houses, cars, kids etc; everything is PERFECT – nothing less than perfect. As a result, anything less than perfect, leads to sadness, depression, feeling of void, rejection, incompetent. We become too critical of ourselves and too judgemental of others. There are many critics in the world today. World needs more supporters. We love placing ourselves and others in this imaginary hierarchy where money,

Call 07 3865 6533

possession, ranking in one’s profession and society decides which position you get in that hierarchy. And constant fight and effort to be somewhere top in that hierarchy has made human kind everything but KIND. Somewhere within, each one of us are tired of this. We all want life to be simple, easy and just HAPPY. This is who we are. This is what our souls are made of – simple, pure, easy, uncomplicated us. But we have put ourselves into this never ending viscous vicious cycle of imaginary hierarchy that only has stress, depression, jealousy, tiredness, lack of empathy, strenuous fake relationships and materialistic friendships to offer. Being less critical and judgemental towards ourselves and others will only make one much happier person, and makes the world a better place to live. Let’s dream limitless, enjoy the journey. Let the destination just be the final product of our joyous journey. Never forget the main reason, the main ethos that made you start your journey. India celebrates third best Comm. Games performance ever

INDIAN athletes and fans continue to celebrate their third most successful Commonwealth Games outing, more than a week after the closing ceremony of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Team India achieved a total of 66 medals across 9 of the 16 sports disciplines the nation competed in, with more gold than silver or bronze medals and finishing at third place overall in the final medal tally. Athletes and coaches were happy with the nation’s overall performance, with a number of Indian sportspeople showcasing their skills against some of the world’s top performers. India’s M.C. Mary Kom made her Commonwealth Games debut on the Gold Coast this year and finished her boxing event with a gold medal. In track and field, former junior world champion Neeraj Chopra defeated all odds and made history by becoming India’s first ever javelin thrower to win gold. Call 07 3865 6533
