Everyone has a fundamental human right to either believe or not to believe in God, we learn to respect their decision, when it comes to faith the same rule applies , promoting ones faith and religion is acceptable, talking ill of other faiths and religions is totally unacceptable. Multifaith dialogues and interaction is encouraging, two of our leading universities have on campus multifaith centres, Griffith and University of Queensland, and these multifaith centres encourage dialogue and better understanding of each others.

Now for my next topic, peace or peacekeeping United Nations Association of Australia Queensland aims to inform, engage and inspire all for a safer fairer and sustainable world, what could be more noble then that. I have been supporting their peace march and memorial service for quite a few years now, as the chairperson of GOPIO International Human Rights Council, our aims and objectives are aligned and hence I am very supportive of all the wonderful work that they do out in the community,

the presence of our Honorary Counsel for India In Queensland Mrs Archana Singh enhanced the experience.

The other night I was invited to attend an International students seminar/ forum organised by Australia Singapore Business Association Queensland, the forum for me was going down memory lane, reliving the experiences of my previous role as Queensland Governments International Students Liaison officer, all of the discussions revolved around the many topics that we had handled during my contract days. I must say the industry has self regulated to an extent and is now much better than what it was back then, still there is ongoing work that needs to be done in area.

Last week of May marks the reconciliation week and another topic close to my heart, being the president of Queensland Multicultural Council, I particularly take interest in this, previously we have organised many functions in this regard. I find it hard to believe that we still have in our society people who do not accept this fact, we have all come from different lands and enjoy the privileges that Australia offers, but why do have a difficulty in recognising the first people of Australia, lot more needs to be done to raise awareness, Queensland Multicultural Council, Reconciliation Australia and Reconciliation Qld all are working hand in hand just to do that.

In the same spirit of human rights, GOPIO Queensland hosted its annual Girmit Diwas , on 14th of May , a significant day in the history of Fiji , on 14th of May 1879, the first ship carrying indentured Indian arrived in Fiji, on 14th May 1987 Stitiveni Rambuka staged the first military coup against the Fijian Government of the day. The Girmit Diwas is an annual event of GOPIO Queensland and similar events marking the Indian Arrival day in various counties are organised by GOPIO Chapters throughout the world.

The day is marked as a solemn occasion to remember and honour the ancestry in a dignified manner. I was fortunate to have been in the committee that lobbied Indian Government to establish a permanent monument in Kolkata in the memory of these heroic Girmitiyas. GOPIO has inaugurated similar monuments in many counties such as Mauritius, South Africa, Trinidad and Guadeloupe etc; I have had the pleasure of visiting all of these counties via GOPIO. Finally we are proud to be supporting many community organisations, being well established we do have the entire Indian community covered by the various mediums and channels available to us, the power of social media cannot be discounted in today’s day and age, hence our EDM, face book posts, online presence, website, twenty four by seven online worldwide radio gives you an entire package.

She shared with us guided meditation with music as part of Mindfulness. Further for more than 20 minutes kirtan – singing of Mantras or transcendental sound in praise of Lord Krishna delighted the devotees.

Weaving together melody, music and mantra in an interactive experience with devotees responding clapping, swaying simultaneously a meditative, exhilarating and fun activity.

As part of the prayer priest did the rituals to the deities at the Hub. Sujatha Vasudevan

briefly explained about the religious importance in June period. Sujatha had the opportunity to highlight Vaikasi Visakam and a few songs with explanations. It was an interesting interactive discussion with the devotees. Finally the session concluded with cultural updates and relevant social justice informations by the organisers. Vegetarian dinner and prasatham were shared among the devotees.

Chinmaya Mission: Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2 Many Problems One Solution– 18th April to 21st April

A MONTH or so back, I had commenced reading Chapter 2 of the Bhagavad Gita. It was a fortuitous coincidence that a program was being organised by the Chinmaya Mission Brisbane for Swami Shrikaranandaji to explain Chapter 2, Sankhya Yoga, titled ‘Many problems One solution’ and how it was a panacea for the problems of the modern day society.

I immediately resolved to attend the program and accelerate my learning of Chapter 2.

The First Part of this program was conducted from the 18th of April to the 21st of April.

Swamiji’s exposition of Chapter 2 was simple, lucid and interlaced with anecdotes drawn from day to day experiences of people in today’s modern world. This brought home the fact that the predicament faced by Arjuna, the state of mind that he had

collapsed to, the teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna to look dispassionately at the situation facing him and take a decision based on the greater good is relevant for all of us today. Swamiji’s reinforcement of the Arjuna disease or Syndrome and the cures for it, as prescribed by Lord Krishna, is a proven antidote available to all us to benefit from. The teachings of Lord Krishna to Arjuna has stood the test of time

and are relevant to not only all of us today but also for posterity. Like Krishna was there to uplift Arjuna from his confusion we all need to have our own Emergency Upliftment Plan EUP to guide/help us at times of need.

Swamiji exhorted us to take the lessons, there from, to heart and apply them in our day to day lives. Solutions to our problems and Peace are within our reach if we

accept the past, learn from it and choose to take correct actions, in the greater good, to solve the challenges facing us. He gave us valuable tips such as keeping a gratitude journal and how to activate our EUP. Swamiji’s session on Chapter 2 was an enriching

experience for me. I thank Swamiji, the program coordinators and all the Chinmaya Sevaks for the wonderful program and I look forward to Part 2 of the exposition by Swami Shrikaranandaji in the very near future that is slated for June 30th 2018.

WHAT you call “anxiety” is just that you are concerned about what is going to be the outcome of something. The outcome of something is not going to be determined because of your desires. It is going to be determined by what you do. The more unprepared you are for what you are doing right now, the more anxious you will be.

Let us say you do not know how to ride a motorcycle – you just sat on it and went.

Every moment will be full of anxiety. But if you know how to handle the motorcycle, it is a dream. The motorcycle is not the anxiety, your inability to handle it is the anxiety. So do not try to handle anxiety.

Anxiety is not a reality, it is a consequence of a certain incapability. If we want to go into something, we must work towards competence, not towards result.

Success does not come to you just because you desire it. It comes to you because you are equipped. The two fundamental ingredients for any kind of successful activity on the planet are to be able to use your physical body and your mind to their fullest potential.

If this has to happen, you must be pleasant

by your own nature. That means you are not the “issue” in your life. If you are not the issue, you can deal with external issues with absolute freedom. If you yourself are the issue, everything is a problem.

This is one reason why even after thousands of years of experience of living on this planet, humanity is still one big mess, because individual people are a big issue by themselves. If they try to handle something, they will only create more issues; they will not solve anything. If they solve one problem, they create a hundred problems attached to it. Don’t you see this happening everywhere – in the international situation, in the local situation, within the family and within yourself? When you yourself are an issue, whatever you touch will become a bigger issue.

The first and foremost thing is, you must be settled. If this is settled, we can do the best we can do with the world. Whichever way it goes, this one is anyway settled. This is one thing every human being deserves and must do for himself. Whether you are going to become the leader of the country or a great athlete is not the point. If it happens it is fine, but the most important thing is at least you pass through life in a pleasant way.

This is something everyone deserves.

United Nations Peacekeepers Service and People’s march

BRISBANE, Saturday the second of June saw the 71st anniversary on United Nations Peacekeepers and peoples march. The march and the remembrance service celebrate the contribution made by Australian Peacekeepers to International Peacekeeping. The March begins at King George Square and finishes at the Shrine of remembrance, Anzac Square, Anne Street.

Participating community organisations come with the flags of their countries and their leaders bring wreaths of remembrance. The march is led by Nashos Pipes and Drums band, and is followed by the community groups and organisations under the watchful guidance of Queensland Police force.

The march concludes at

the Shrine of remembrance, Anzac Square where the official ceremony takes place.

President of United Nations Association of Queensland, Donnell Davis welcomed everyone to the memorial service and went through the list of the dignitaries present.

The opening prayer was led

by Reverend Bob Rodgers, hymn “Abide with me” was led by Laurie Young Concert Band, and dignitaries with wreaths came forward in pairs, and announced their names before entering the shrine to lay wreaths.

Hon Counsel for India in Queensland, Mrs Archana Singh brought a special garland as a sign of respect.

Butler MP and Councillor Angela Owen were amongst the other elected representatives in presence, apart from the many community organisations, many consular corps were also in presence. Country women’s association provided the morning tea with the awesome traditional scones garnished with jam and cream.

Clem Campbell immediate past president and event coordinator, in his final remarks thanked everyone for making the event a success; he thanked all those who had tirelessly worked hard behind the scene to make it happen. His vision is to one day see this event being replicated in all major cities of Australia, Lest We Forget.

The Blame Game

DEAR READER, it is with great joy we bring to you the word of God. In life we all have opportunities to find faults and blame others.

I read of this person who looked at the mirror and blamed it for being ugly.

If you are finding fault all the time and developing a habit of seeing the bad rather than the good, if you have trained yourself to seeing the worst rather than the best and if you are always blaming everyone for everything that’s going wrong in your life, then perhaps it’s time to look inward instead of at others.

In the scriptures (Matthew 7v 3) Jesus said “And why do you look at the speck in your brothers eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?”

Again, we read in the scriptures (Genesis 3) after disobeying God,

by eating the fruit from the tree of good and evil, Adam blamed his wife Eve and she blamed the serpent for causing her to disobey. Just like Adam we blame our spouses, coworkers, parents etc. Our time on earth is valuable and short. Scriptures tell us that we will have to give an account of ourselves to God. Imagine standing before God at the end of your days on earth and giving an account of how you spent your life blaming others for your troubles.

This is not the best way to live. We are to take responsibility with regards to what’s happening in our lives.

Here are 3 things we can learn when we are too busy blaming others.

1) Blaming others delays your learning. In the days of Prophet Hosea (Hosea 4), people were too busy pointing fingers and blaming others.

They stopped learning and growing. In fact they were being destroyed for lack of knowledge.

2) W hen you blame others, you give up your power to change. That means when people are too busy finding faults and blaming others, they have not time to fix their

own.

3) Blaming others shifts you from the seat of a victor to victim.

The seat of a victim is always one of suffering and pain. Letting go of blaming others for the unfairness does not cancel life’s many hardships, but it’s not about them but you. You do this to reclaim the freedom and power that is yours.

The best you can do is let go of the pain of blame. You have to make a decision that you are going to get past blame. That you are going to let go of seeing yourself as a victim of other people’s choices.

It may well be that being judgemental, critical and fault finding could be the things that have held some people back for years.

Love believes the best in others. It always sees the good. And when there is blame or a fault to be found, instead of looking outward, first look inward.

We should never be afraid to look inward and humble our self before God. Then we give God the opportunity to promote and bless us (1 Peter 5v6).

So stop creating a negative thought. Stop nurturing it by repeating it. If you say,’ Nothing good ever happens to me.’

Nothing good ever will happen to you. Because you are sending these signals to the universe.

If instead you say, ’I know good things are happening to me. I am being taken care of. ‘ You are sending the right signal. The natural powers, the universe will start working on that. The first thought pattern is

confusing. When you say ‘nothing good ever happens to me’ ,you stopped the process of good happening . You accepted that nothing good can come. You sent a message to the universe that you are closed and nothing good can be sent to you. The universe delivers what you think or want.

The universe does not overpower your thoughts. Thoughts have gravitational pull. Like any natural force, gravity pull can work with us or against us.

The gravity pull of some of our habits may currently be keeping us from going where we want to go.

It is a powerful force and if we use it effectively we can use the gravity pull of habits to create the cohesiveness and order necessary to establish effectiveness in our lives.

All our scriptures have emphasised on ‘Right thought’ Let us start with this.

Let us think something good for us and let the universe work on that.

Parvati – The Goddess of Fertility

PARVATI, the spouse of Lord Shiva, is the goddess of fertility, love and devotion. She, along with Saraswati and Laxmi, the spouses of Brahma and Vishnu respectively, form Tridevi, three chief goddesses in Hinduism.

Parvati is the daughter of Parvat, the mountain king Himavan also known as Himalaya and queen Mena, the daughter of the mythological mountain Meru.

Being a daughter of Parvat, she is called Parvati. The personified River Ganga, who also emerges from the Himalaya, is her sister. According to the Puranas, Parvati is a sister of Vishnu.

Parvati is the incarnation of Sati, the first wife of Shiva in antiquity. According to legends, Daksha, the father of Sati organised a major religious ritual. He invited many divine dignitaries except his daughter Sati and son-in-law Shiva. Sati was eager to witness the event arranged by her father. Without an invitation, and despite advice against visiting her father, she went to the ceremony. There, she noticed complete disregard directed towards her husband Shiva. Unable to withstand the humiliation shown to her and Shiva, she immolated herself in the ceremonial arena. However, due to her extreme love to Shiva, she took birth again as Parvati to become his wife in her subsequent incarnation.

Parvati wished to marry Shiva, however her parents were not supportive of her wish. Despite their opposition, she performed austere penance to attract Shiva’s attention. The whole pantheon of deities were astonished at witnessing the depth of her devotion to Shiva and exclaimed U Ma, Oh No, in Sanskrit.

Uma became another name of Parvati.

Parvati’s love towards Shiva and her penance to please him overcame all hurdles and her parents eventually organised her wedding with Shiva. The Tulsikrit Ram Charit Manas contains the vivid details of Sati, her incarnation as Parvati and the wedding of Parvati with Shiva.

Kumar Sambhava, a classical book written in first century BC by great poet Kalidas, also provides a superb description of Parvati’s love for Shiva, her penance to please Him, their wedding and the birth of Kumar, also known as Skanda or Kartikeya.

Among the Tridevi, Parvati has a family with a husband and children in the conventional sense of a Hindu family.

She displays a gentle and caring nature of a female deity.

Hindu women worship Parvati especially to obtain a harmonious and loving family

life. Festivals such as Teej and Karwan Chouth are dedicated to Parvati. Women worship Parvati for the wellbeing of their husband. Mahashivaratri, which is the wedding day of Shiva and Parvati, is also dedicated to them and both are worshipped on this day.

Parvati is known by many names. Lalita Sahastranam, a section from Brahmanda Purana, mentions over a thousand names of Lalita, the divine mother Parvati, specifying her attributes. Gauri, Girija and Maheshwari are typical terms used for Parvati.

Gauri represents Parvati’s youth form.

A bride offers prayers and worships to Gauri before her wedding as a part of rituals in a traditional Hindu marriage.

Girija refers to Parvati’s origin from the mountain whereas Maheshwari denotes her relationship with Maheshewar, another name of Shiva.

Durga and her appearances in a number of forms, including Kali, display various aspects of Parvati. These forms demonstrate her strength, valour, courage and resourcefulness to destroy evil forces.

The ancient Vedic texts contain limited reference to Parvati, however, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas contain a number of stories relating to her. According to Ram Charit Manas, Shiva narrated the story of Ramayana to Parvati in ancient times to clear her doubts about the divine nature of Lord Ram. Parvati is the mother of Ganesh and Skanda, although both of them were born in a divine fashion. Parvati created Ganesh from the sandal paste scrubbed from her body while she was bathing.

Ganesh was created to guard from intruders during her private moments.

Skanda, who is the army general of deities, was born from Shiva’s seed without any association with Parvati.

Both Ganesh and Skanda are popular Hindu deities.

Parvati is worshipped in a variety of designs and forms, either alone or with her family members. She is normally portrayed with Shiva. Ardhanarishwar, which is a union of half male and half female, is the joint depiction of Shiva and Parvati. In some images, their sons Ganesh and Skanda are also included with Shiva and Parvati. When Shiva is shown as a Linga, the base of the Linga represents Parvati.

Parvati resides with Shiva on the top of Kailash Mountain. Gauri Kund, a pond near Kailash Mountain, is believed to be her bathing place. Nandi the bull is also her vehicle when she travels with Shiva.

In her Durga form, a lion is her vehicle.

There are many temples dedicated to Parvati. These include the Parvati temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh, Girija temple located in Uttarakhand, Ambaji temple in Gujarat, Meenakshi temple in Tamil Nadu and Vishalakshi temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

With Shiva, Parvati is a central deity in the Shaiva sect of Hinduism. She is the energy of Shiva. Parvati also has special importance for Shakta sect of Hinduism.

Followers of the Shakta tradition stress on the feminine form of energy displayed through Parvati and her manifestations as mentioned in the Puranas and Shakta texts.

At Risk Occupations Under RSMS Visas THE 18th of March 2018 brought with it a number of changes to the 187 RSMS and 186 ENS Visas along with the abolition of the 457 Visa which has been replaced by the new 482 Visa. Whilst these changes have been discussed in detail by the Department, and BY many in the industry, this was not the only change that we have seen in the last few months.

There has been a large number of refusals in these subclasses recently in what appears to be a change in Policy at the Department of Home affairs, when assessing ENS, RSMS and 457/482 applications. The most prevalent of these refusals has been related to Retail Managers under RSMS. Many of these refusals have been in relation to Retail Manager positions located in a Franchise business, however, the problem has not been exclusive to Franchises.

The Department has been refusing these applications on the grounds that the position is that of a retail supervisor and not a manager.

Recent decisions by the Department of Home Affairs indicate that Case Officers are of the opinion that under a franchise or under the control of a Director/Employer, the Manager is not able to perform various management duties. This type of decision is also happening for other occupations.

In order to ensure your applications have the best chance of success, you should provide further evidence of the position performing the duties of your occupation as per the ANZSCO guidelines. Don’t Keep History A Mystery, Reconciliation Week theme LOGAN, May Twenty Seventh-Reconciliation Queensland, Reconciliation Australia supported by Queensland Multicultural Council hosted a function to mark the launch of Reconciliation week, which goes from 27th May till 3rd of June. Dr Tom Calma AO, Reconciliation Australia Co-Chair said, “Here in Australia we’re fortunate enough to have one of the richest and oldest continuing cultures in the world. This is something we should all be proud of and celebrate.”

Speakers at the function stressed the importance of teaching Aboriginal history in schools, we should learn, share and grow with a history which is truly ours, dark as it may be, and it is the truth.

The worrying fact is that many Australians in this day and age still do not recognise this fact.

Community organisations have a vital role to play in raising the awareness.

The event included the talks, networking refreshments, display of Aboriginal artefacts and photographic display. Ahmadiyya Muslim Association, Brisbane presented a faith based perspective on reconciliation.

Queensland Multicultural Council had a good representation at the launch, President Umesh Chandra was one of the speakers, below are some of the facts around reconciliation week.

“Don’t Keep History A

Mystery: We should Learn, Share and Grow” with the history hidden just beneath the surface, ready and waiting to be uncovered. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures have been continuously practiced on Country across Australia for many thousands of years. New archaeological evidence of earliest occupation is being unearthed each year.

Much of this evidence links to contemporary practices and stories and is dated back as far as 60,000-80,000 years.

Who is an aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?

You might meet a person who says they’re Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander but

you’re doubtful because they don’t look the way you think Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should look.

Perhaps their skin is not as dark as Aboriginal or Torres Islander people you see on television, perhaps they’re dressed differently to how you imagine we should be, perhaps they live in the city and you thought ‘real’ Aboriginal people live in the desert.

In Australia today, there are three legal ‘tests’ that determine whether a person is Indigenous. They must: Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.

Be recognised as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander by other Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people.

Skin colour has nothing to do with defining whether a person is Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Terms like ‘halfcaste’, ‘part Aboriginal’ or ‘mixed blood’ are meaningless and can be deeply offensive.

Such terms have been used to control and divide Indigenous Australians. They are words that belong to the past because they are words that are divisive, damaging and meaningless.

There are many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people today who have pale skin and live in cities. The

reasons for this are varied.

For a long time, governments deliberately tried to ‘breed out’ Aboriginality by dictating who we could and could not marry.

Many also began relationships with non-Indigenous people by choice.

All Indigenous people take pride in their ancestry that goes back tens of thousands of years. Indigenous cultures have evolved over time, just like all cultures, such as through contact with other people, new technologies and new ideas. Whilst Indigenous Australians move between two cultures they are still incorporating traditional practices and beliefs in their everyday life.

Agumbe: The Malgudi Days Town

By Dhaval Vyas, Ahmedabad, India IN THE mid eighties in India there was a very popular TV serial, called “Malgudi Days”. My quest is beginning to feel absurd before it’s properly begun. I’m looking for Malgudi, that gentlest of small towns characterised by a completely different pace of life— old bungalows and tiny bazaars populated by sweetmeat sellers, astrologers, small printing presses, painters of signs, and talkative men. Although it’s a fictional place created by novelist R.K. Narayan (1906-2001) some eighty years ago, a Google-search throws up several candidates in present-day India.

Malgudi is a gated villa community south of Chennai inspired by R.K. Narayan’s ideological concept. A quest for RK Narayan’s fictional town — replete with old-world charm and character — leads to many interesting twists and turns, stories and discoveries. My friend & myself, set off in my new SUV, Mahindra Thar in search of Malgudi, which landed us in the heart of Agumbe: A small sleepy town in Karnataka where the this famous TV serial was made in the mid 80s.

The name Malgudi evokes a nostalgic response in almost anyone you meet. Somehow it seems to bring about memories of a simpler, less complicated era in our lives, so much so that even Indians who’ve never experienced village life firsthand feel as though ‘Malgudi’ might be their ‘native village’!

Agumbe is a tiny village in the Shimoga district of the Malnad region in Karnataka. Also known as “The Cherrapunji of the South”, Agumbe pioneers in rainforest

conservation programs, trekking and tourism. It is well known as “Hasiru Honnu” meaning green gold. This is because Agumbe has a variety of medicinal plants that include rare species like Myristica, Eugenia, Ficus, Hoiligarna and Garcinia.

It receives the heaviest rainfall in the South India and has many rivers, streams and waterfalls in the area.

Agumbe is home to one and only Rainforest Research Station located in the Country.

Taking a trip to Agumbe is a pleasant experience, it has picturesque beauty and is ideal for trekking. Agumbe is in Malnad and is covered with lowland rain forests.

Hiking and trekking through the hills gives a glimpse of the hills and beautiful waterfalls that flow through the dense jungles. Agumbe is a secret treasure hidden in the hills.

The best time to visit the place is from November to January. Because of the heavy rains, it is advisable to avoid the period of monsoon.

The road to Agumbe is a tunnel of emerald greenery, nut plantations, and rubber nurseries. We run into a thick cloud after the third hairpin bend and by the time we drive into Agumbe, the mist is so thick, it’s like entering a fading photograph of a town… or hamlet, as this turns out to be. I’m finally in Malgudi!

Everything looks like the TV series but less crowded. There are barely any people. No cars. It is so quiet it’s magical.

Agumbe is essentially a T-junction, called “Circle”, with a post office, a bus stand, some shops and messes like resturants such as Hotel Kubera.

There is also a bank and a school

with a faded board outside—I decipher the name “S.V.S. High School”. Could this have been the Albert Mission College featured in the Television series?

There’s a winding side lane called Car Street which takes me to a village square with the Sri Venugopalakrishnaswamy temple that feels familiar, and a primary school where kids that look like Swami and friends crowd the classrooms, and a ruined choultry (dharamshala) built in 1907 that locals use to dry coconut husks. Many of the bungalows are distinctly old-fashioned and unique.

But what if it’s in Karnataka?

I’ve found evidence in the popular Doordarshan series Malgudi Days by playing the video numerous times in slow-motion. In the episode about the mailman who doesn’t deliver an inauspicious letter on a wedding day, the footage of Malgudi post office flashes the zip code 577 411. It belongs to a small Malnad town called Agumbe (population: 180 joint-families).

Everybody I speak to, from the postman to the shopkeeper, remembers Malgudi Days which was filmed in 1985-’86. When I ask where the shooting happened, they say: “Everywhere.” Most villagers got walk-on parts, doing cameos in the series that transformed this into a bustling small town if only for the duration of the shoot. Apparently the equestrian statue of the British resident, Collector Sir Frederick Lawley, was put up at the T-junction to transform it into a proper “Circle”.

However, the key location, where the crew spent months on end, is Doddamane (“the big house”) on the main street. This private home www.indiantimes.com

built in 1900 has a grand front veranda adorned with pillars, and a central courtyard. Kasturi akkathe matron of the house sits on a cot in the inner veranda, surrounded by two other matrons. Before I quite know how it happened, I find myself seated with them. In my hand is a steaming tumbler of kashayam, a milky, lightly spiced beverage with cure-all medicinal properties.

Kasturi akka’s old-world hospitality is the stuff of legend.

She doesn’t allow filming any more. She relates how the Malgudi Days shooting turned the house upside down. The first episode that took place in the house was “Maha Kanjoos” about a miserly grandfather and his mischievous grandson.

Chatting with the family it is easy to feel that one has indeed set foot in a different world. They are proud of how clean Agumbe is and that it hasn’t changed at all since the eldest among them were children sometime in the 1930s. When I step out again, I get a funny feeling that the slow pace here really does set one’s inner biorhythms to Malgudi time. But however close to an ideal village Agumbe might seem, with its kindly, unhurried, educated inhabitants, there are things missing. Where, for example, is the railway station? Talguppa station, a 126-kilometre drive north, was used as a location in the TV series.

There’s also no Lawley Extension— Agumbe is so frozen in time that suburbs for upwardly mobile, modern people haven’t yet come up.

Most tourists visit Agumbe to trek through its forests or to visit the waterfalls. Trekking to the Kudlu Theertha Falls or Nishani

“1 in 3 Aussies don’t accept” Many Australians are unaware of, or reject, fundamental aspects of history, according to the Australian Reconciliation Barometer. Almost one in three Australians do not accept that government policies enabled Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children to be removed from their families without permission until the 1970s.

More than one in three Australians do not accept that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were subject to mass killings, incarceration, forced removal from land and restricted movement.

Gudda offers a once in a lifetime experience. (But also beware of the leeches that infest the forests.) The high points of the treks are the visual treats that Agumbe offers. Sunset Point, a gallery erected to view the sunset, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and even the Arabian Sea on a clear day.

Remnants of temples dating back to the Hoysala Empire are also worth a visit.

Agumbe is accessible by road and rail (the nearest rail junction is Udupi), and provides tourists with a rich local cuisine. The Inspection Bungalow and the Guest House are the only two commercial places for visitors to stay.

R.K. Narayan’s description of Malgudi was so meticulously realistic that the reader would often feel that she had literally visited the place herself. Such was the charm of the provincial world created by his words that critics would compare the literary microcosm of Malgudi to William Faulkner’s Yoknapatawpha County, a small town that the author created so that he would be able to freely meddle with its geography and details as he pleased, without incurring the wrath of the residents of any actual town or place.

Most of R.K.Narayan’s stories were extremely simple, and had simple plots – an ordinary person, most often a young boy or man, would be jolted out of his peaceful existence through no fault of his own, and be forced to grapple with problems that were obviously too complex for him. International Education, Challenges and opportunities for Qld Economy BRISBANE, Australia Singapore Association Queensland hosted an International student’s seminar at Queensland Academy of Technology on 31st May. The education sector plays a significant role in the Australian Economy and is growing at a rapid pace. Australia is known overseas as a safe and friendly country which provides numerous opportunities in education, including studying English, particularly from the Asian region due to proximity and affordability. Hence the growth is inevitable.

The International education sector also provides broader social and community benefits to Queensland. GOPIO Queensland’s Girmit Diwas

BRISBANE, 14th of May is a significant day in the history of Fiji, the first ship load of indentured Indians arrived in Fiji on board “Leonidas” under the British rule.

The word “Girmit” is word coined out of the word agreement, though now widely used in many Indian Diaspora countries is a word which came into existence in Fiji. GOPIO Queensland has been organising the Girmit Diwas since 2013, always on the 14th of May. Girmit Diwas is solemn occasion when the sacrifices of the first Indians to arrive in Fiji are remembered.

Many chapters of GOPIO International observe similar days in their countries.

Umesh Chandra of GOPIO Queensland who has held many GOPIO International positions had been on the committee that lobbied Indian government for the inauguration of a permanent monument in Kolkata, and was present at

the inauguration ceremony of the monument in Kiddderpore Kolkata.

A memorial monument, designed to bring the descendants of Indian indentured servants, including Fijians, in touch with their past, has been constructed at the Port of Kolkata (Calcutta), India.

The monument is a tribute to the millions of indentured servants who left India for other shores during the period 1834 to 1917.

Ashok Ramsaran, Umesh Chandra and Vishnu Bisram, along with nationals of other countries, lobbied the Indian government for the monument through GOPIO and the government has agreed to the proposal. It is a momentous achievement for the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin which has been working closely with the Indian government on projects beneficial to the overseas Indian communities.

The Last Ten Nights of Ramadhaan and Eid-Ul-Fitr

ONE of the blessings of Ramadan is that it is a boot camp for the soul. Imam Al-Ghazali, in his work, Kitab Riyadat al-Nafs from the Ihya, describes the process of disciplining the soul and recommends building a fortress to keep the soul safe. This fortress is based on four things: hunger, sleeplessness, solitude and silence.

These are the four pedestals of mujahada (striving), the process of restraining and training our souls.

And in Ramadan, these elements are automatically built in to our experiences in this month. We fast (hunger), we pray in the night and are awake before dawn (sleeplessness), and we retreat to the masaajid in taraweeh and ‘itikaf (solitude and silence). The framework of the fortress is there, but it is a work in progress. Only if we are vigilant in strengthening its foundation will that fortress be able to withstand the harsh elements that it will face when Ramadan ends.

In increasing our efforts in the last ten nights, we are not just preparing for future challenges on the horizon, but also preparing our heart to be ready to receive the immense Divine gifts that shower upon us in these nights. One of the best ways to prepare ourselves and help us roll up our sleeves is to continue to focus on those four building blocks:

Hunger We have made it through over 20 days of fasting.

All the anxieties and concerns we may have had about these long fasts and short nights are long gone. We might even say it is fairly easy now, almost routine. But when things get easy, then it time for us to challenge ourselves more, like a weightlifter incrementally adding more weight to the barbell to continue to progress in strength. As sages of the past remind us, the benefits of fasting cannot be optimized unless our hunger is more than what we are typically used to, to prevent our lower impulses from emerging.

Keep up on the simple iftaar and suhoor, and try to eat less than we have been so far to reinvigorate the benefits of hunger—eat according to your needs, not your nafs (lower self). And don’t forget, the less time spent eating, the more time available for worship.

Sleeplessness This can be tough. Fasting tends to gets easier as the month goes along, but the sleep-deprivation takes its toll, especially if we need to maintain busy schedules at work or with the family. Sleeplessness teaches us about our own frailties and limitations, pointing us towards our utter reliance on Allah. Think of the times that you have implored Allah all the more greater to help you get through the day or to wake up on time for prayer or work. As the body tires, the heart awakens to new realities that it may have been veiled from under normal circumstances.

If you’ve been given the opportunity to take time off during the last ten nights, even if it is just one night, try to sleep less on those nights and spend time in different acts of worship, mixing it up to keep you fresh. Drowsiness is like hunger a lot of the time, it comes in spurts and sometimes just standing up or doing another activity will help you push through it.

If you have to maintain your usual work schedule and cannot stay up through the night, try to make an effort, if you have not been yet doing so, to pray through the entire taraweeh with the imam, including the witr, to receive the benefit of being considered to have prayed the whole night. On the other end, try getting up a bit earlier than your usual suhoor time. Even if it›s just a few minutes earlier, spend that time in dhikr and du›a.

There’s no greater time for du’a than that period, in the last third of night.

Solitude In the last ten nights, retreating to the masaajid in ‘itikaf is even more encouraged, so if you have the

ability to do so, spend as much time as possible in the masjid. Even if you can›t spend the whole night, spend more time than you have been previously, with that intention of ‹itikaf. The key to remember is that ‘itikaf is for a spiritual retreat, to minimize the external stimulation and distractions and focus the heart on its relationship with Allah. It’s not about sleeping over in the masjid, but about starting over, starting a new chapter in your spiritual life, using the masjid as a vehicle to facilitate that transformation. Find a place where you can reflect and not be disturbed. Try not to intermingle more than necessary, while maintaining the necessary adab and courtesy for others as needed. For women who cannot attend the masaajid, some of the madhaahib (legal schools) allow for women to do ‹itikaf in a specific place in their home, for even a brief period of time, and gain its rewards.

Silence As the Prophet said, "Let whosoever believes in Allah and in the Last Day either speak good or be silent.» The agitation of our external tongue is intertwined with the internal agitation of our lower self. Bringing about quietude to our speech and environment goes a long way in calming our souls, while also promoting the atmosphere of fikr (contemplation) necessary to purify our hearts. Minimize the idle talk and chatting as much as possible and give the phone and social media a break, not just during the nights but during the workday. In those opportune moments where you find yourself alone at your desk or at home when the children are asleep (finally), contemplate deeply on the Creator and engage in spiritual reflection. Remind yourself of your shortcomings and of Allah’s mercy and plead for Him to rectify your condition, with the

supplication our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) encouraged us to say in these last ten nights: “O Allah, You are al-Afuww (The Eraser of Sins and Pardoner) and you love to pardon, so pardon me.”

The beauty of this supplication is that we invoke the Divine characteristic of Al-Afuww, which is greater than forgiveness, for it completely obliterates and erases the sin off our permanent records, whereas in His Forgiveness, Allah conceals those sins on our record.

We ask Allah for both, and as we do so, let us also strive in these last ten nights to be forgiving with others. All too often, as we engage in our deeply personal worship in these ten nights, repenting to Allah and seeking His forgiveness, we forget that one of the essentials of repentance is that we resolve any violations we have committed towards others. Ramadan is a time where we see more of the Muslims than at other times of the year, at communal iftaars, taraweeh and other activities. We will see those who we have wronged or those who have wronged us. Just as the process of fasting, taraweeh and ‘itikaf naturally facilitate the disciplining of the soul in Ramadan, the social light of this month, bringing the Muslims together, gives each of us an opportunity to heal past rifts and move forward. The last ten nights are a chance to bury old grudges and forgive one another, so that we can together invoke Allah on the Night of Power to forgive all of us for our violations towards Him. The best example for us in these nights is our Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and family), who, on the 20th of Ramadan, when entering Makkah in victory, forgave all those who had harmed him and his followers. It was an act that was the epitome of the Prophet’s grace.

May Allah grant eternal success to the ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and may we learn to emulate the Prophet›s grace, both in Ramadan, and outside of it.

“O Allah, You are the Eraser of Sins, and you love to pardon, so pardon all of us.”

Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr) The most important thing of this month is the Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr) - the night which is superior, than a thousand months, one thousand months jihad, one thousand months reign, and the worship in it is superior than one thousand months of worship, (as has been narrated in the traditions). Yes! the Night of Power is a very precious and distinguished night, in accordance with the Qur’anic interpretation it is a very auspicious night; and as could be derived from the traditions, in this night the sustenance and age of servants, and the good and evil of their affairs are destined; the Holy Qur’an was descended in this night; also the angels are descended all over the earth, and when they pass through the gathering of believers, send salutations and praises upon them, and consider their prayers until the dawn.

“It has been narrated that during this night the prayers of all are accepted, and the prayer of no one remains unanswered except the following: The one who has displeased and angered his parent and was declared disinherited or rebellious by them.

The one who has cut off his relationship with his kith and kin.

The one who possesses animosity and vengeance of a believer in his heart.

The one who consumes alcoholic drinks.”

In the book “Iqbal”, a tradition has been narrated from the Holy Prophet [s]: “That Prophet Moses [a] in his prayer said: ‘O’ Allah!

I desire Your nearness and union. ‘My nearness and union belong to someone who remains vigilant and awake during the Night of Power.’ Replied Allah.

Prophet Moses [a] said: ‘O’ Allah! I want Your blessing and forgiveness.’ ‘My blessing belongs to someone who is kind towards the destitute on the Night of Power.’ Replied Allah.

Prophet Moses [a] said: ‘O’ Allah! I want to pass through the bridge of Serat on the road to Paradise safely.’ ‘The safety in passing through the bridge of Serat belongs to someone who pays alms on the Night of Power,’ replied Allah. Prophet Moses [a] said: ‘O’ Allah! I want the trees and fruits of Paradise.’ They belong to someone who does not forget to remember and praise Me on the Night of Power.’ Replied Allah.

Prophet Moses [a] said: ‘O’ Allah! I wish to have your pleasure and consent.’ My pleasure and consent belong to someone who offers two rak’ats of prayer during the Night of Power.’ Replied Allah.

In the same book of Iqbal it has been narrated from the Holy Prophet [s]: “On the Night of Power the gates of Heaven are opened. There for every is no servant who offers prayer in this night, but Allah for every prostration stores a tree in the Paradise - the tree whose branches and shade is so vast that if a rider travels for one hundred years through its shade he would not be able to cross it; for every ra’kat would build a home for him in Paradise - the home decorated and built by pearls, topaz, and rubies; for every verse recited a crown from the crowns of Paradise; for every praise (tasbeeh) a bird from the birds of Paradise; for every sitting a rank from the ranks of Paradise.

For every witnessing (tashahud) - a chamber from the chambers of Paradise, and for every salutation a robe from the robes of Paradise would be bestowed upon him by Allah. And at the breaking of the dawn, companions - youthful and sympathetic, houris of

Paradise - pure and decorated, servant obedient and well uniformed, horses - most obedient and swift, flowers, greenery, and good smells, running elegant fountain streams, and many other bounties which make the soul pleased and eyes to shine, would also be bestowed upon him by Allah.”

1. T he Ranks of the Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr)

It may be derived from some of the traditions that there are ranks and degrees for the Night of Power and each one of the nights of 19th, 21st, 23rd, and 27th may be considered possessing one of those degree.

And the night which possesses the most superior distinction, has been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an as equal to thousand months, and whatever is destined in that night wouldn’t be changed is the night of 23rd of the Holy Month, which is also known as the Night of Juhanni.135 And the one who wants that his actions should be exact and precise, better be vigilant during all these four nights. Of course, regarding the Night of Power there are some other narrations as well, but since their authenticity is not confirmed, it would not be appropriate to describe them here.

2. Beseeching Allah for Bestowing Readiness for the Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr) Yes! the one who believes in the religion and respects Qur’anic verses and traditions of the sinless Imams [a], it would be desirable that he should make his best efforts and endeavours for celebrating this night.

The efforts which are desirable and should be undertaken are, that during the whole year before the arrival of the Night of Power, he must repeatedly beseech Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted) to bestow upon him the divine grace (towfiq) to be vigilant during this night; bless him with most esteemed and dearest deeds; consider that night superior than one thousand months for him and may accept from him; make him His most favourite and nearest one during this night; bless him with His love, learning, nearness, union, pleasure, and consent together with health, happiness, and welfare; should be pleased with him in such a manner, that after this he would never be displeased with him; should make the prophets.

Imams, and especially the Imam of the Age (may Allah hasten his appearance) pleased with him; and allocate him to live in Allah nearness accompanied by the impeccable ones, bestow upon him divine favour to succeed in establishing Allah’s obedience and consent, and make his ultimate end Allah’s countenance and pleasure.

3. Preparation For the Night of Power (Lailatul-Qadr) The other decent efforts for this night are that before its arrival, the prudent wayfarer should arrange for its preliminaries and necessities, e.g. for worshipping in this night a suitable place, dress, and perfume should be arranged in advance for engaging in private humming communications Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted), as well as for communications with his masters, i.e. sinless Imams [a] he should arrange suitable themes and contents; for paying alms during this night should allocate some money, even for the invitation of guests and for payment of alms, he should plan in advance to select the most suitable guests and the genuinely poor people who really deserve financial support.

Let us imagine that if an emperor dispatches a special courier before someone, with compassion and mercy invites him for a special feast, gives him glad-tidings that if he appears in the royal feast with decency and decorum, rewards and magnificent gifts would be bestowed upon him, and the more respectfully he would behave in the assembly, the emperor too would increase his rewards and gifts in proportion with his behaviour.

Undoubtedly, after receiving such a message this person would become excited and pleased, and in order to prepare himself would not leave any stone unturned, and during this period would mobilize all his resources and efforts to procure whatever is required for being present in such an assembly, so that finally, when that moment arrives, being fully decorated in a respectable and decent manner, he could present himself over there.

The invitation of an emperor is responded in the above manner but how about the invitation of Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted), who is the King of all kings - the King of the Earth and the Heavens - has invited us for His feasts; in order to invite us has dispatched his favourite angels, pious prophets and sinless Imams as his couriers. He has assigned His angels to announce his invitation kindly and compassionately to us; has given us the glad-tidings of giving us permanent abode in Paradise in return for sincere worshipping during one single night (the Night of Power); has promised such bounties, which have not been seen by any eye, have not been heard by any ear, and have not been imagined through any human being’s mind, as well as has given us the glad-tiding of illumination, ecstasy, majesty, splendour, nearness, union, and countenance, for whose least comprehension and understanding, faculties of reason and thoughts find themselves astonished and helpless.

Are we among those who have prepared for this night and invitation, the way we ought to be, and must be, in order to attain the eternal blessing and salvation?

Or are we among those negligent and idle ones, who do not achieve anything except loss and eternal doom?

We must better know that the one who acts naively and lazily, and does not strive to take advantage of the magnificent generosities of this night, when in the Hereafter, would see that those who were zealous,

committed, and vigilant during these nights what have they achieved, and what magnificence, splendour and glory have been bestowed upon them. But they would gain nothing except regret - the regret so great and painful that the Hell’s blazing fire and its torturous punishments would seem smaller as compared to their regret, and then together with the losers and eternally doomed ones, would cry loudly: “Ah! Woe upon me! In that I neglected (my duty) towards Allah.” - Holy Qur’an (39:56) But on that Day when the gates of repentance would have been closed, there would be nothing left for compensation of the damage, everyone would have seen the ultimate outcome of his deeds, and then feeling sorry and being regretful would not produce any gain. Therefore, we must take a look upon ourselves, and before falling into such regret and grief, must admonish ourselves for being so lazy, naive, and easy going. And before that we are called for accounting and are condemned into the state of wretchedness and destitution, for wasting our precious capital - the capital through which we could have accomplished most precious and greater gains we better put our self to scrutiny.

3.1. Selection of the Most Suitable Deeds Other desirable efforts of this night are that with the nearing of these nights, one should increase his eagerness for receiving the promised bounties and blessings; should select worships and deeds which are more in harmony with his mood from the point of view of sincerity, heart’s presence, and internal purification; in this matter should seek help from Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted), and the impeccable ones; and if he cannot diagnose himself what suits his mood properly, he should seek guidance from Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted), through consultation (istekhara).

3.2. Meditation and Pondering After recital of invocations and supplications one should also allocate some time for self-meditation and pondering, of course, this should be done at a time when he is free from whatever disturbs his thoughts like domination of sleep, over-eating, and pains of hunger etc.

3.3. Not to be Negligent from Allah During these nights, one must strive his best to keep thinking about Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted), all along the night, and should not forget Him during any part of the night even for the sake of recommended and justified deeds. Also while offering prayer and supplications he should not think about any other thing even though if they happen to be recommended things.

For example, during prayer (salat), one should not think about recommended deeds like building of mosque, cleaning of mosque, and paying alms etc., because all these are indications of negligence; even during a part of the prayer (salat), he should not think about the next portion of the prayer, e.g. in the state of standing, to think about the prostration is negligence.

He must try to concentrate upon whatever act of the prayer he is performing and should not be negligent about whatever he is doing or reciting. In order to make this task easier, before performing different acts of prayer, e.g. recital or genuflexion (rukoo), first of all, he should think about them briefly and then should perform them. And in case while performing a certain act, negligence dominates over him, and if a verse or invocation is recited with negligence, he must repeat it again.

For example, when he wants to stand towards Mecca (Qiblah) for prayer (salat) first of all, he should think briefly about the wisdom of standing towards Mecca, and then should turn his face in that direction; and when he wants to stand for the prayer, first of all, he should think about the meanings of standing, i.e., his standing is for truth and his resting upon his two feet is the indication of his hope (raj’a) and fear (khouf) about the acceptance of his worship.

When he wants to recite the phrase: “In the name of Allah the Beneficent, the Merciful.”

First of all, he should think about its meaning in brief, and then should recite it with his tongue, and similar is the case with other acts of the prayer.

3.5. Crying and Shedding Tears For the prudent wayfarer who desires, that during these nights his fear, humility, tears, crying, anguish, and lamentation be increased as much as possible, one of the best method is that he should tie his hands around his neck; should pour dirt upon his head; should place his head against a wall; sometimes he should stand and sometimes he should cry; should imagine himself at the scene of Judgement Day; and the way sinners are rebuked with harshness, should rebuke himself accordingly; then he should look towards his right, imagining about the companions of the right hand (ashab al-yamin) and should think about their splendour, majesty, features, virtues, robes, and smells; then he should look towards the left, imagining about the companions of the left hand (ashab alshumal) should regard himself among them, thinking about their torturous and painful condition with blackened faces, their swollen eyes, tied hands and feet, and burnt skins; the angels standing in readiness to execute Allah›s command to throw him together with them inside Hell; then he should imagine and be scared lest Allah (the Glorious, the Exalted) orders: “Seize ye him, bind ye him, burn ye him in the blazing fire, and make him march in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits.” - Holy Qur’an (69:30-32) On behalf of The Islamic Society of Algester, we wish all Muslims a Happy Eid Ul Fitr.

FIJI GIRMIT COUNCIL: Not a dead horse, but an injured tiger

FIJI GIRMIT Centre (FGC) in Lautoka, Fiji was established in 1979, to mark Girmit Centenary-100 years of arrival of Indentured Labourers to Fiji -18791979. It was opened by Shrimati Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India on 21 September, 1981.

Today, FGC has degenerated into a sick and poor organisation of healthy and rich members. Sanatan, Muslim League, Arya Samaj, Sikh Association, Gujarat Samaj, TISI Sangam, Ahmadia Muslim, Andhra Sangam, Council of Churches and Kabir Panth – they are the member affiliates who should come to the rescue of Fiji Girmit Council.

We need to salute Mr YP Reddy and other trustees, Messrs Vinod Patel, Pyara Singh and Kanti Punja for being very diligent guardians to our heritage. It is NOT a dead horse, but an injured tiger, which needs to have some thorns removed from its feet to ensure it gallops along - again. And let us all do that - with your blessings collectively.

There appears to be great deal of misrepresentation

and misinformation about FGC. Therefore, I am undertaking a two-part article on this organisation to remove falsehood, and shed light on the real situation.

The objective is to generate reawakening of interest, and awaken its affiliates to fulfil their obligation to the memories of Girmitiyas.

One misplaced perception some people have is that Mr YP Reddy “owns” FGC and it is shut to others. Nothing is further from the truth.

In fact, we need to salute the founding Trustee Mr Reddy and his Reddy Group of Companies who have provided that life-support glucose and blood bottles to a terminally ill organisation abandoned by some of its affiliates and members.

This article was prompted by the inauguration of Global Girmit Institute (GGI) at Saweni Shopping Complex, Lautoka, Fiji and inauguration of Brij and Padma Lal Library Collection on 14 May, 2018.

I considered it a parallel or breakaway organisation.

However, GGI spokesperson Ganesh Chand corrected me by saying the activities of GCI was global girmitiyas while the FGC’s scope was local (Fiji). I wondered, what role then GOPIO play - Global Organisation of People of Indian origin?

I had questioned why not this new Library could have been based at Girmit Centre as a sub-section of their already existing library.

To this, Chand replied that they recognised there was a

physical shortage of space at FGC and the large stock could not be accommodated there.

However, my investigation showed that this was not the case, as there is adequate space to meet the requirement, and more room could have been created if needed. The issue here is, was there any discussion or dialogue on this issue? A centralised Girmit Library makes sense as it better serves the interests of the students, scholars and other users.

It is logical that one needs to have a strong foundation locally in order to be globally linked. Unless you are grounded locally, you can have little claim to belong to anything global, which is akin to a body without a head. And there is no greater foundation than Fiji Girmit Council. It would be in everybody’s interest if these two organisations work together in collaboration and cooperation to supplement the Girmit course.

The last thing Girmit course need to do is to provide anybody oxygen for political or academic opportunism.

Over the years, the center has promoted culture, music and arts, and has been supplementing its income through hall hire to cover operational costs. FGC was donated 12.5 acres of land

by Fiji government. Some 8.0 acres of land remain unutilized and my second article will put forward some suggestions to make better use of this gift.

The centre is struggling financially, and has accumulated debts surpassing $180,000 this year. There is very little support from outside, hence there is a request to Fiji Indian Diaspora to start a movement to bring this place to be worthy of memory of our pioneer generation In case you have forgotten, that glucose and blood

bottles from Reddy Group of companies are still hooked up to this sick organisation for life-support, which needs our attention – and urgently.

We should all join hands to bail out the Council from its financial doldrums PART 2: Moving ahead - suggestions and recommendations to show that Fiji Girmit Council Tiger Jinda Hai.

Fiji crowned London 7s champs after defeating South Africa 21-17

THE Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team has won the London 7s after defeating South Africa 21-17 in the final this morning.

This is Fiji’s fifth gold medal in the 2017/2018 World Sevens Series as they did it in style with three converted tries against a tough South African 7s side.

South Africa scored the first try after Sevuloni Mocenacagi was yellow carded for tackling a player in the air.

Despite the yellow card, Fiji still managed to level the score with a try to Josua

Tuisova who bulldozed his way through three South African players.

The scores were level 7-all at half time.

Coach Gareth Baber maintained his area of focus on possession and controlling the game.

Fiji went on to score their second try through Paula Dranisinukula as he collected a brilliant offload from Amenoni Nasilasila while their final try was scored by Jasa Veremalua who combined well with Josua Vakurinabili.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk hosts Iftar Dinner SUNNYBANK, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk organised a Ramadan Iftar dinner at Sunpac Centre on 31st May. During the holy month of Ramadan , Muslim community observe fasting , the breaking of that fast is called Iftar , it is traditionally done so in a communal basis , hence there are many community based Iftar dinners. Brisbane City council has for the last couple of year’s organised Iftar dinners at Sunpac centre in Sunnybank, where by not only the Muslim community but other multicultural community is invited to partake.

Iftar (or Fatoor) (Arabic : ‫ راطفإ‬‎ ʾifṭār ‹break fast’) is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. Muslims break their fast at the time of the call to prayer for the evening

prayer. This is their second meal of the day; the daily fast during Ramadan begins immediately after the predawn meal of Suhur and continues during the daylight hours, ending with sunset with the evening meal of Iftar.

Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together.

Iftar is taken just before Maghrib time, which is around sunset.

Traditionally but not mandatory, three dates are eaten to break the fast in emulation of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad, who broke his fast in this manner.

Many Muslims believe that feeding someone iftar as a form of charity is very rewarding and that such was practised by the AProphet

Muhammad.

Queensland Police organised a Iftar dinner for the Muslim community.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Association held a community Iftar and information session on fasting in other religions on Sunday 3rd June, regliogius representatives of other

faiths talked about fasting in their respective faiths.

On seventh of June, Commonwealth Bank of Australia organised a Iftar dinner at Qld Parliament House in conjunction with Honorary Cousel for Turkey and Ms Gail Ker of Access Servives.

This celebration was a token of appreciation to all the pioneers for their sacrifices and achievements which they made towards building a bright future for their generations to come, at the same time working with the local and other communities in building Fiji a multicultural society and have now become a big community of contributors to multicultural country Australia.

It was a full day event from 11 am till 9 pm with cultural events where some of the performance included the audience to participate along to engage and entertain them, stalls and children rides.

The evening program started with Australian anthem followed by a classical dance as a prayer seeking the wellness to community, other cultural events and a beautiful demonstration of Girmitias (Pioneers of indenture labour in Fiji) who underwent hardships and atrocities by overseas

Colonial Sugar Refining Company (CSR) of Australia and lack of education and other facilities, where they made great sacrifices and with hard work made significant contributions towards education, maintaining their culture and traditions, building schools, Temples, Mosque, etc., for their future generations in Fiji. It is for such a vision that today’s third generations are professionals and skilled people in Fiji and who are spread around the world.

This festival was also about recognising and acknowledging the people who have made difference to the community with their service and contributions.

Stay Nourished Eating well is vital to ensuring you are at your most fertile. Being either overweight or underweight can make conception more difficult as it can cause hormonal imbalances. So, ensure you have a balanced diet that helps maintain a healthy body mass index (BMI). Do your best to avoid sugar and saturated fats, and be sure to eat plenty of lean protein, fruit and vegetables. These foods contain iron, zinc, and vitamins B and C, all of which are vital to fertility.

Keep Fit To maintain a healthy body weight, try to find time for at least 30 minutes of mild to moderate exercise every day. There’s no need to overdo it – something as simple as going for walk

Growth in housing construction costs rise, but at a slower pace - New South Wales the exception THE LATEST CoreLogic building index report (CHIP) out today, confirmed housing construction costs continued to rise over the March quarter, however growth is generally decelerating. Report author Eliza Owen noted that in nominal terms, quarterly growth in the national CHIP Index fell from 1.1% in the December 2017 quarter, to 0.8% in Q1 of 2018. She said, “Annually, growth in the national CHIP index was 3.9%. Victoria had the highest annual growth at 4.4%.”

Across each of the 5 states covered in the CHIP report, growth in construction costs over the March quarter was lower fell relative to the December quarter last year.

New South Wales was the exception; quarterly growth was steady at 1.1%.

Nationally, Ms Owen said slower growth in residential construction costs reflects other signs

of a slowdown across the residential construction space such as employment in construction. Based on Australian Bureau of Statistics data, in the three months to February, employment in the construction sector grew 1.8%. While employment in the construction sector has grown rapidly since 2016 to meet demand in the housing sector, this 1.8% growth in employment is substantially lower than the recent high of 2.7% growth recorded over the June quarter 2017.

However, Ms Owen said, “The slowdown in construction employment growth may not place added pressure on housing costs because dwelling starts have slowed, too.”

The trend commencement data from the ABS suggests that residential dwelling commencements peaked in March 2016 at 59,253. At the December 2017 quarter, commencements had

slowed 8.8% to 54,035.

On Saturday, April 14, 2018, India celebrated the 127th birth anniversary of Bhim Rao Ambedkar.

His ancestors had long worked for the army of the British East India Company, and his father served in the British Indian Army at the Mhow cantonment.

Although they attended school, it is reported that Ambedkar and other untouchable children were segregated and given little attention or help by teachers. They were not allowed to sit inside the class.

When they needed to drink water, someone from a higher caste had to pour that water from a height as they were not allowed to touch either the water or the vessel that contained it. This task was usually performed for the young Ambedkar by the school peon and if the peon was not available then he had to go without water; he described the situation later in his writings as “No peon, No Water” However, despite facing all hardships, Ambedkar, in 1897 became the only untouchable enrolled at Elphinstone High School. In 1906, when he was about 15, he got married to nine-yearold Ramabai.

Ambedkar pursued a degree in economics and political science from Elphinstone College, University of Mumbai, and then completed his Masters in Economics (Major) at the Columbia University and Doctor of Science in Economics from London School of Economics with the help of a scholarship.

Ambedkar went on to work as a legal professional.

In 1926, he successfully defended three nonBrahmin leaders who had accused the Brahmin community of ruining India and were then subsequently sued for libel.

While practising law in the Bombay High Court, he tried to promote education to untouchables and uplift them. His first organised attempt was his establishment of the central institution Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha, intended to promote education and socio-economic improvement, as well as the welfare of “outcastes”, at the time referred to as depressed classes.

For the defence of Dalit rights, he started many periodicals like Mook Nayak, Bahishkrit Bharat, and Equality Janta.

After India attained independence in 1947, Ambedkar accepted Congress’ proposal to serve as the country’s first Law Minister and was appointed chairman of the Constitution Drafting Committee on August 29, 1947. On November 26 1949, the Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly.

Opposition to Aryan invasion theory and Manusmriti Babasaheb viewed the Shudras as Aryans and

rejected the Aryan invasion theory which depicts scenarios around the theory of an origin from outside South Asia of Indo-Aryan peoples.

On December 25, 1927, Ambedkar publicly condemned the Manusmriti for justifying caste discrimination and untouchability and led thousands of Dalits and burnt copies of the text.

Opposition to Article 370 Ambedkar opposed Article 370 of the Constitution of India, which granted a special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and which was included against his wishes. He resigned in 1951 when the Parliament delayed the draft which sought to enact gender equality in the inheritance law.

Conversion to Buddhism Ambedkar considered converting to Sikhism. But after meeting with Sikh leaders, he concluded that he might get “second-rate” Sikh status, as described by scholar Stephen P Cohen. Instead, he studied Buddhism all his life.

Around 1950, he devoted his attention to Buddhism and travelled to Sri Lanka to attend a meeting of the World Fellowship of Buddhists.

After meetings with the Sri Lankan Buddhist monk Hammalawa Saddhatissa, Ambedkar organised a formal public ceremony for himself and his supporters in Nagpur on October 14, 1956. Accepting the Three Refuges and Five Precepts from a Buddhist monk, in the traditional manner, Ambedkar completed his own conversion, along with his second wife Savita.

Death Ambedkar passed away on December 6, 1956 in New Delhi where he was accorded a Buddhist cremation.

Bharat Ratna In 1990, Ambedkar was posthumously conferred with Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

Punjab Government To Send Team Amid Reports Of Threats To Shillong Sikhs All India, Press Trust of India

by Cabinet Minister Sukhjinder Randhawa to the Meghalayan capital, an official said in Chandigarh on Sunday.

The team will make a ground assessment of the situation in the troubled areas and extend all possible help to the Sikh community there, an official spokesperson said.

The chief minister has directed the team, which has MPs Gurjit Aujla and Ravneet Bittu, and MLA Kuldip Singh Vaid as its members, to leave for Shillong on Monday morning.

Amarinder Singh has offered all possible help to the Meghalayan government in ensuring the security of the Dalit Sikhs, whose ancestors were reportedly brought to Shillong during the British era.

The Punjab chief minister said, if necessary, the centre should intervene to defuse communal tensions in which the Sikhs in Shillong were caught.

Bhopal: Hundreds of discrepancies in the voters' list of Madhya Pradesh will have to be weeded out ahead of the assembly elections in the state that will be held later this year.

Strict orders to investigate the issue and put it right were issued by the state Election Commission after the state's opposition Congress submitted a complaint with a list of 60 lakh fake voters.

The Commission has formed four teams and tasked them with an extensive investigation that will take into account the errors made and corrective actions taken through door-to-door verification. The teams have also been asked to fix responsibility in case of deliberate mistakes, suggest corrective action and keep the Deputy Election Commissioner in the loop.

The teams will start investigation from Monday and submit their report within four days.

State Congress chief Kamal Nath said the party has submitted to the commission what he called "evidence" of approximately 60 lakh fake voters registered in the voting list. Labelling it a case of "administrative misuse", Mr Nath said the names had been "deliberately registered in the list".

The BJP has said the lists should be investigated and the flaws are removed.

"If there is a mistake in the voter list, it can be resolved but it is said that the voter list cannot be broken. This is also a matter of investigation. There is no government or government administration to take it, the EC should investigate," said state minister Biswas Sarang.
