Message from the Board Chair

Another year at BISR has passed.

Although it has been very different and extremely challenging for everyone, the community spirit at BISR has once again shone through. From the early disappointment of having to continue with remote learning, to the excitement of our well-being days, the resilience and attitude of our students at BISR has never failed to amaze me. They are a credit to us all.

The staff at BISR have worked tirelessly to make remote learning as engaging and as much fun as possible for our students. The use of Google Classrooms and various online interactive tools has provided an education for our learners that was highlighted by the CIS inspection team as being outstanding.

Stand out moments for me this year include the well-being days. It has been wonderful seeing the excitement on the faces of all our students again and meeting the children new to BISR. In Foundation I have been lucky enough to watch our youngest learners grow in confidence each week and prepare themselves for the next stage of their school journey.

On a personal level, I will be sorry to see both Mrs Layton-Short and Mrs Hunter leave us at the end of this academic year. I look forward to welcoming Mr Smith and Mrs Russell as the new Headteachers of Primary and Senior respectively, and watch as BISR continues to go from strength to strength.

YEARBOOK 2020 - 2021 For the first and hopefully last time in our 41-year history, the BISR yearbook reflects a full academic year spent online, following a programme of remote learning. The global COVID-19 pandemic has challenged children, teachers and parents in new and unexpected ways, a once-in-a-generation event that will have a lasting impact on us all. Yet, despite all that we have had to contend with, we have developed an online programme on a par with the best schools in the world, with parents, teachers and students all rising to the challenges faced, showing impressive levels of adaptability and resilience. REACH has been at the heart of everything throughout the year and I am genuinely proud of the way our community has grown together during this period.

Over the course of the last year, staff and students have learnt new skills and developed new ways of working, showing much creativity along the way. Despite the restrictions, on-campus days have been hugely popular and a great way to support well-being within the community. It has been wonderful to see how we have been able to continue practical subjects using items around the house and the new ways we have shared our work and learning with each other. We have moved important events online, including Wow Days, Book Week, Well-Being Week and International Week, as well as our extra-curricular programme. Some amazing achievements despite all the restrictions we faced. A special mention must also be given to our examination students who have worked extremely hard to achieve the grades they will be awarded by the Examination Boards.

Across all ages, there have been some remarkable learning achievements.

Also, in the 2020-2021 academic year we opened our third campus in Riyadh, in the Diplomatic Quarter. An amazing team

worked together through the toughest lockdown period in Saudi Arabia to ensure that our beautiful new campus was completed on time. It is wonderful to see the smiles of enjoyment on children’s faces when they have the chance to be in school for a day. Also, we welcomed Taif and Tabuk Primary Schools into the BISR family. These schools maintain the many advantages of being a small school but benefit from being part of a larger group through access to more specialist support and teacher input, along with new resources and a broader range of online extra-curricular activities.

Despite the global lockdown, BISR continues to REACH in all it does.

As we end the academic year, vaccines are being rolled out across the world and at a good pace in Saudi Arabia, giving us room for optimism and hope as we prepare for normality in the next school year. For families leaving BISR and Riyadh, we wish you all the very best as you move to new jobs and schools. For all other students and families, we look forward to welcoming you back to school and back on campus in September 2021. Whilst we have loved seeing your smiling faces on-screen, we cannot wait to welcome you back onto campus.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SENIOR AL HAMRA CAMPUS

Mrs Clare Hunter I write this year’s message with very mixed feelings. I have been Head of Senior for 8 years and in that time we have experienced much together, most things of a positive nature but a few hard times too. It is however, time for me to move on as I retire and start a new phase in my life much as our leaving Year 13 are doing. It is a time where you feel both excitement about what the future brings but also a degree for trepidation as you don’t really know how you will manage the new situation you are heading for. It has been a real honour to be able to serve this community and I will cherish the support I have received from the whole community.

The last few years have presented some particular challenges with the passing of Chris Mantz and also the COVID situation. It is one of the greatest things about the BISR family that we have made it through these together and are the stronger for it. It is that sense of community and togetherness that I hope can continue in the future. There are exciting plans for the future and whilst I am a little sad not to be part of this growth, I do feel that it is important that there is a leader in place who will be able to see it all through to the natural conclusion. I am therefore confident that you will continue to support the Senior Leadership Team and Mrs Russell as she takes the school into this bright and exciting future. And so all that is left is to say a few ‘Thank You’s - firstly to the Students - what a wonderful group of young people you are. You give me such confidence about the future of this world.

You have embraced all that we have tried to offer and have been ready to come forward and provide your voice to enable us to do what is best for you - don’t stop doing this and take ownership of your learning journey to achieve the best possible future for yourselves. To the entire Staff - I simply could not have done my role effectively without your support, challenging decisions when needed and constantly having the students as your primary focus. I leave knowing that the students have had minimal impact following a very disruptive period through the hard work and dedication of the entire team. It has been a privilege to work with such a dedicated group of professionals and I wish you all the very best for the future. Finally a thank you to the Parents - you have entrusted your most precious children to the care of the school and have worked with us to achieve the very best possible outcomes for them. This does not mean you agree with everything but that healthy dialogue and debate is essential for the right decisions to be made.

And so I wish the entire community all the very best as you move into the next chapter of the school’s history. There will be new challenges ahead, but together you will weather them for the sake of the children in our care. I will continue to watch from afar and wish you every success and good fortune.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF PRIMARY AL HAMRA CAMPUS

Mrs Rebecca Layton- Short This has been a year like no other. A whole year with our young children learning online, as our teaching team and parents have done their utmost to give them the very best chances possible, in some of the most challenging times imaginable. Each one of us has tried to negotiate, as best we can, the complexities and challenges of living and working through the Covid19- pandemic era. But one thing rings true and of which I have no doubt – we are stronger together. I could not be prouder of every single member of the Primary School community, in supporting one another at this difficult time for all.

There have also been some silver linings to those tumultuous clouds. A highlight of the year has been enabling all of our children to have multiple opportunities to come on to the campus, to meet friends and have some much-needed fun. It has been a huge undertaking to keep our community safe, particularly with children so young. However, that partnership between home and school, has made it all possible. The palpable excitement beforehand and the buzz afterwards of our Wellbeing Days has made it all worthwhile!

To quote Dr Seuss - and that is not all; no that is not all. At the beginning of this academic year, having surveyed parents and staff, we made the bold, brave and somewhat difficult decision to move to ‘all live’ lessons in the Primary School. There are no right answers in a world where things are so fluid and unchartered but, looking back, I believe it was the right thing to do. We have also spent a very long time in planning and preparing to reopen the Primary School fully, involving all members of the teaching team and informed by shared experiences from schools around the world.

When it happens, we will be ready!

Behind the scenes, the Primary teachers and support staff have been constantly refining their techniques in working online, with dogged determination and huge commitment, all for the benefit of the children in their care. We have also managed to find moments to pause, reflect and celebrate, even in our online world. National Day, Pink Day, Odd Socks Day, International Week, Virtual Authors, Mangahigh, Chess competitions, Anti-bullying Week, Time Capsule, Astronaut and Man City visits, weekly assemblies... The list goes on…

Of course, writing this Yearbook is a bitter-sweet moment for me as the outgoing Head of Primary and a poignant reminder of my time left at BISR. The Ups are so many – too many to mention. I will be leaving with very fond memories of such a strong sense of community: our incredibly supportive parents, our committed and dedicated teaching team and our absolutely delightful children. The Lows have been so few; in the tragic passing of Chris Mantz and, of course, the challenges we are all facing in this ‘new normal’.

Looking forwards with hope, there are some glimmers of light on the horizon and cautious optimism in the air about reopening the campus next year. I wish to thank all members of our community at BISR for their much-appreciated support - and all the very best for the future. Keep in touch!

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF PRIMARY

DIPLOMATIC QUARTER CAMPUS

Mrs Anna Power When I accepted the position of Head of Primary of the new BISR Diplomatic Quarter Campus I knew that there would be many challenges ahead, there always are when opening a new school. None of us could ever have predicted what these challenges would look like in the middle of a pandemic. With teachers sitting in their (or their parent’s) living rooms in Australia, Wales, Dubai, England and Scotland and a few already in Saudi Arabia we managed to pull together and establish a school that has come a long way in a very short time.

As a community we took time to build relationships and get to know each other. We have all made new friends and even though initially it was quite surreal and through a screen, it was clear that relationships were developing and connections were being made. When, way back in October we were able to come onto the school campus and see each other in ‘real life’ these relationships began to flourish even further. It has been amazing to see a community form from nothing and we should all be proud of the contributions that we have made towards this.

One of the beauties of being located in the Diplomatic Quarter is that we benefit from having children from many different nationalities. Each of us bring with us our own identity and make our school the global minded and vibrant place that it is.

International Week was an event that brought this internationalism to the fore and children and families alike participated in a variety of activities that celebrated and showcased the many nationalities that make up our school.

Children and parents have had an experience like no other and in the future we will look back upon this time as a pivotal moment in history. Children, teachers and parents have all learnt something new during this time. We have all developed skills we never thought we had in us or would ever need. This level of resilience in the face of adversity has challenged us to REACH in ways we had never imagined.

With the restriction of who can come onto campus, hearing children interact and play in our school space is something that every teacher in our school has looked forward to. It became apparent that the beautiful building we had been given needed its soul and the soul is most definitely the children of BISR DQ. Being physically in school and hearing these sounds is something that we as educators will never take for granted.

Thank you to everyone in our first year who took this journey with us, it was a crazy ride but a truly magnificent one and all of us at the DQ cannot wait for it to continue.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE HEAD OF SALWA, TAIF AND TABUK CAMPUSES

Mr Richard McDermott A monumental year by anyone’s standards but one made all the more significant by the new relationships that have been established with the growth of BISR. Last year marked the 40th anniversary of BISR, during which time it has had a fifteen year relationship with Salwa Primary. This time has been spent with an ever growing relationship and now, as of this year, BISR has become five campuses. The DQ or Diplomatic Quarter branch of the school is a beautiful building, located in a lovely area of Riyadh, whilst Al Hamra BISR is ready for a new lease of life. Joining the family we also welcomed the schools of Tabuk and Taif. The three BAES schools have formed a tight bond and have been planning strategically to share resources and expand on opportunities in the near future.

We say goodbye to numerous staff: Mr Gray, Ms Allison and Ms Smith leave us permanently, Mrs Cottage will move over to another BISR branch as an Assistant Head. Mrs Carr, Mrs Mina and Mrs Neasham are stepping away but have all promised to involve themselves in one form or another next year - of which we will keep them too.

With a new experienced team coming in, Salwa takes on a new personality. Change is in the air and we welcome Mrs Jo Rice, Mrs Clare Cannon, Ms Carolyn Eccleston and Mrs Nadia Rashid onto the team. New faces and change brings a new phase of Salwa life and we are looking to move on and move up. We look forward to welcoming you back next year and wish you all the very best of health.

Message from the Leadership Team

Firstly, I am aware that there are members of our community who have lost family members and friends during the pandemic, and I offer my deepest condolences to all those who have suffered such a loss. The purpose of this piece, reflecting on the end of a full academic year of remote learning, is not to commemorate a crisis but, rather, to reflect on what we have overcome, and what we may have learned. For many, this has meant a greater appreciation for family and friends, of the importance of social interaction, physical activity and care for one’s mental health.

In addition, I am grateful to have been able to continue working with students and colleagues, in striving to reach our individual and organisational goals.

In particular, I wish to express my gratitude towards our counsellors, child protection team, student services staff and our Heads of Year, who have continued to work diligently to support our students despite the complications of having limited face-to-face contact. In terms of the sections of the school where I have more direct responsibility; the Physical Education department has taken innovative approaches to encourage students’ participation in physical activity and maintained great levels of enthusiasm and encouragement throughout. Our English and Humanities faculties (along with all of our subject areas) have demonstrated a fantastic commitment to ensuring that circumstances have not curtailed students’ achievement.

Nowhere has this been more evident than in the diligence with which we have adapted to the fluid requirements of the examination boards to provide evidence-based grades that preserve the school’s integrity without disadvantaging students. Our Sixth Formers have continued to benefit from the high standards of teaching and learning, guidance and support that we have come to expect and, although I am relishing the opportunity of focussing on Key Stage 3 at both Al Hamra and the DQ next year, I will certainly miss working with the team.

To various degrees, this has been a stressful time for us all. Perhaps, like me, you might take heart from words such as the following from Kelly McGonigal, psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University: “Stress gives us access to our hearts. The compassionate heart that finds joy and meaning in connecting with others, and… your pounding physical heart, working so hard to give you strength and energy… when you choose to view stress in this way… You’re saying that you can trust yourself to handle life’s challenges. And you’re remembering that you don’t have to face them alone.”

I wish all the best for you and your loved ones over the summer, and hope that you will join me in looking forward with optimism toward the next academic year.

Message from the Leadership Team This time last year I never would have thought that we would still be in a period of remote learning and that we would be finishing our second academic year in this way. There is no doubt that this has been a difficult time for many of us but I have been inspired by the adaptability and perseverance of our students and staff. We have all learned a lot this year, academically and technologically, but also about ourselves. We will look back on this year as a time of challenge I am sure, but I hope we also remember how we have grown and developed as individuals and as a community.

As the world moves forward, never has it needed adaptable and resourceful global citizens, like you the students of BISR, more. While again this year our exam groups did not have the end of year that they had anticipated, they have taken it in their stride and made the best of a difficult situation. It may not feel like it now but the resilience and strength of character you have developed will serve you well in the future.

This academic year, as with the last, will be largely remembered for COVID19- which changed our normal way of working. However, it is important to remember all the accomplishments we have had as well. The fact that we have been remote learning for the entire academic year has not stopped us and we have still had some of the excellent experiences that make BISR the wonderful school that it is. A particular highlight of my year was the author visit. I had the pleasure of popping into a few primary classes to act as their “Mystery Reader”. As a secondary teacher it took me out of my comfort zone but I really enjoyed getting to know some of the younger students in the school.

In addition to the ECAs, house events and other exciting activities that took place this year, this piece would not be complete without acknowledging all the effort and hard work put into the academic studies. It has not been easy for students or staff (I am sure everyone is looking forward to having some time away from their computers!) but the dedication and perseverance demonstrated by students and staff alike has been amazing to see. This has left me immensely proud to be a part of the BISR community.

I would like finish by wishing the students leaving us this year the best of luck in everything that you do. I hope that you remember all the great times you had, the friends you made and all you have accomplished. It may not be the ending you expected but know that you have developed as a person because of it. I wish you all the best as you move onto your next adventure.

Well, what a year we have had; a whirlwind of activity and unpredictability! However, looking back over this academic year I can confidently say we are a resilient bunch, resourceful and kind. When the going gets tough, BISR accepts the challenge and finds a way through.

A yearbook is a great opportunity to sit back and pause to consider all that our wonderful students and staff have been up to. Being online has been a feat but despite this, we have seen international Maths and Language competitions, well-being challenges, a selection of face-to-face ECAS and the fabulous opportunities to have students back in school in small groups. With the hard work of staff, our students finish the year positively, having embraced new ideas, tried new things and had a lot of fun along the way. I also recognise the challenges that were thrown our way to; but we did it, our community pulled together and accomplished great things. I am reminded of the last strand of our Well-being Framework, the capacity for growth and resilience and it is in those moments of struggle that we see growth, in those times of darkness that we dig deep and carry on, and here we are, intact and most certainly ready for a well-deserved holiday!

Allow me to remind you of why BISR is an extraordinary place to be. From Well-being to Curriculum days, to on and offline events churning away after the final bell and over 700 and more students participating in our ECA programme we are truly making the most of the times we find ourselves in. Many have formed new friendships, some have moved on and many have joined our community; whoever you are and however positively you have contributed to this year, we thank you.

It has perhaps not been the first year my family and I had expected but I can honestly say, we are grateful to be here, grateful for the community spirit and blessed to be a part of BISR! 15

Another year has gone by. It has been a year to remember and one that won’t be forgotten soon.

Although we have been in a pandemic, it hasn’t been all gloom and doom. We have been very fortunate that our online learning has been of a very high standard mainly down to the teachers, students and our parents. One of the many reasons BISR is a special place to be, is our community spirit and this has been evident this year like never before.

The well-being days in school have been very well received by all. In Year 3 and 4 the exciting activities made all the students jump out of bed super early on the days they were on campus.

I saw all the students bouncing into school and having a fantastic day. The teachers were also bouncing but I think they were a little tired by the end of the day!

In Year 3 the children have really enjoyed many events we have had this year. We have had special breakfasts online. There was a fantastic role play activity in Year 3 with children enjoyed sending videos they made acting out Romulus and Remus during our Roman topic.

The children thoroughly enjoyed making their stories come to life through the use of puppet pals and acting out the animals from the story of The Great Kapok Tree through video submissions.

In Year 4 we have had quite a few memorable moments this year. We had a whole year group teacher debate to introduce persuasive writing.

In our world war topic Year 4 had a special video message from Neville Chamberlain answering some of the questions that the pupils had asked. I remember the International breakfast together during international day and seeing all that yummy food! :-) Weekly whole year group social chats every Thursday have been really successful in bringing the whole year group together.

I want to mention Mrs Layton- Short who will sadly be leaving us this academic year and thank her for all the hard work and dedication to improve our wonderful school for all of us. I also look forward to working with our new Head of Primary, Mr Neil Smith to continue on our journey to make our school even better than ever.

I will end by wishing you all a great summer holiday. If you are leaving us, we will miss you and you go with our best wishes for the future. Otherwise I will see you all at the beginning of the next academic year.

Message from the Leadership Team 2020-21 has been unique for many reasons. Every one of us has tried our best to navigate the rough Covid- 19 waters, with all the barriers it has thrown up and the individual personal circumstances we all have at home. As a primary school, we have relentlessly asked ourselves, ‘Is this best for our community?’ and ‘Under what conditions will this work?’.

The students have been a credit to themselves, their parents and the wider school community.

The way they have played, learned and wondered has been a privilege to experience. I am sure they will have developed many new skillsets during these times. All of this would not have been possible without the guidance and help from parents and other helpers at home.

The BISR community spirit has continued to thrive!

The teaching and support teams have shown true professionalism and camaraderie as they worked together to make our remote learning programme and Well-being Days meet the needs of our students. They have tweaked teaching and learning approaches in this online world, utilised technology as appropriate, provided beneficial hands-on experiences, and been aware of their cohorts’ emotional, physical and social needs. It has been lovely seeing how well our students have engaged and interacted during lessons, registration activities and had good times during Social Chat sessions. It has also been lovely welcoming our students to their Well-being Days each day as they bubble with excitement. We have sorely missed having students on campus! The boys and girls have been a fantastic bunch of young people to get to know. The maturity and the respect they have displayed is something to be proud of. During our Virtual Author Visit week, the children demonstrated how they embody our REACH motto. The students challenged themselves and the authors with the excellent construction of ideas and their posed questions. The teacher mystery readers all had great fun reading to their year groups each morning. I had a brilliant time reading Nibbles, the Book Monster, to our youngest students in EYFS while dressed up as Goldie Locks.

I wish all of our student and staff leavers the best of luck! I hope your future adventures are fruitful. Everyone that is returning next year, I hope you have a wonderful summer holiday, and see you in 22-2021!

This year has seen us continue with remote learning and pass a milestone of one year something none of us could have foreseen. Although this period has been tough I think that one of the benefits has been the insight parents have had into their children's learning on a day-to-day basis. Having a child in Foundation Two and a child in Year Two on the Al Hamra Campus, I've certainly enjoyed seeing them blossom despite the barriers to their learning and would like to extend my thanks to the teams involved. I can also speak first hand at the quality of the provision provided by BISR across the five-sites at this time in comparison to provision in other parts of the world - most notably the UK when talking to friends and family. I’m therefore extremely confident in looking to the future for the students at BISR and know that they have a huge advantage in comparison to the masses.

Seeing the DQ grow and flourish this year has been an immensely rewarding experience for all concerned. We have all been so fortunate to have such a wonderful setting for our school, and it is lovely to see the light open spaces of the school being filled with all the essential elements of school life: well used resources, busy staff and (perhaps most importantly) the sound of children happy and caught up in their learning. This is evident across the school; from a small group of children sitting and reading on bean bags in the library area, children eagerly chatting and thoroughly engaged in their play in a KS1 classroom or developing their swimming skills in our pool.

From the very beginning of the year we have made it a priority to build strong and positive relationships at all levels of the school; starting to get to know each other at the start of year with our autobiographical unit, and building on this through our regular timetabled Wellbeing sessions. Looking back at the larger school events that contribute the rhythm of school life - assemblies and focus weeks. It is great to see that we are able to acknowledge and celebrate the fact that the DQ is made up of individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, whilst working together on a shared set of goals.

This year has been hugely productive, but there are more exciting events on the horizon for the DQ. Next year will see the addition of KS3 classes, initially with Y7 and Y8 coming on board, with a further expansion of classes when the second phase of the school comes online later in the academic year.

A great start to BISR DQ Campus, with so much to look forward to next academic year.

Message from the Leadership Team Our world as educators and students was turned upside down this past year. I would like to begin by saying how proud I am of all of the staff, students and families here in Tabuk for the way they have adapted and flourished during this challenging time.

We are all hoping for a full return to school next year and cannot wait to hear the beat from a tambourine or the laughter of children in the corridor. The vaccine has offered us that opportunity and I personally was the first in line to sign up for it!

One of the biggest takeaways from this year is the way that many of our pupils have taken a chance and really grown, not only their ICT know-how, but also their speaking and listening skills.

Throughout the remote learning period we have achieved superb assessment results and avoided the anticipated COVID academic slip. Our students well-being has been at the forefront of all learning experiences we have offered. Whenever students were feeling blue they were picked back up by their peers and teachers. Becoming part of the BISR family has seen our school grow from strength to strength. Professional development of staff and sharing of best practice is already directly benefiting students learning experiences and I am incredibly excited to see where next year takes us.

Finally, for some of us, this is goodbye. I would like to pay sincere thanks to James Trayling who moves on this year after gracing us with his creativity and commitment to excellence. Vicky Kyosovska who has revolutionised our teaching of ICT and languages also leaves us this year.

Have a great summer everyone, we cannot wait to see you all in September back at BISR Tabuk, the warm heart of TGV compound.

As we reach the end of a challenging year, there is certainly a sense of expectation hanging in the air as we approach what we hope will be a return to ‘normality’ for 2021/22. Whilst we eagerly anticipate a return to full time face to face learning in school, teachers have continued to make memories for our pupils this year even in the most challenging of circumstances. From being able to hear the distant drum from a music lesson, seeing excited pupils shining like the sun as they arrive at school for our well-being days or children smiling having fun on the playground as they play together in harmony (socially distanced) this year will live long in the memory for many reasons.

When all is said and done, we will reflect and look back on the challenges we have successfully faced and overcome as a community. We all will have found new levels of resilience and determination and our IT skills will certainly have improved!

This year has also seen Taif become part of the BISR family and we will continue the journey of developing close links and relationships with the other BISR campuses across Saudi Arabia. Our Taif campus also continues to grow, both in terms of our numbers on roll which will be our largest ever next year, and our new classroom being built alongside extensive refurbishment work over the summer holidays. The name of the game for us all now is to rest, relax and recover during the holidays ready for the new opportunities and challenges ahead in the new academic year.

Although at times it feels like only a week since we started this year, it is also time to say farewell to those families who are moving on to pastures new. If you see the wonder of the fairy tale, you can take the future even if you fail at the first attempt. Best wishes and bon voyage.

BISR Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

This year’s message is certainly a difficult one to write, looking back on a whole year of virtuality, little socialising and very few events to celebrate and showcase. However, the PTA Team both at Al Hamra & Salwa Campus have been soldiering on behind the scenes regardless with supporting parents, physically, mentally & technically, fundraising and sponsoring school events. In line with the new school logo, the PTA have also gone through a facelift with a symbol that hopefully represents the collaboration and strength of our communities across BISR’s 5 campuses. Remember, together we can achieve so much more and help support each other. A huge thank you to the team of Parent & Staff volunteers who give up their time for the betterment of our children and community. Here’s to a brighter, in-person new school year 2021. Stay safe!

We are a group of parent & teacher VOLUNTEERS, working together to enrich our whole school. We meet monthly to discuss where funds are to be spent & look at initiatives to support staff & parents.

We have been dubbed the “Glue of BISR” acting as conduit & listening to the needs of the whole community.

Buddy Program for new families, Food For Thought – suggestions for healthy lunchboxes, connecting the school with local organisations, listening & acting as a conduit for parents & staff are just a few ways we support.

Educational & fun events are organised year–round for families. In addition, the PTA Family Fun Day is attended by over 1300 members of the BISR Community.

Our newest campus, opened in September 2020, is in the heart of the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) in Riyadh, where low-rise buildings are set in an attractive urban landscape.

Opening a third campus has allowed us to provide a greater number of school places to support the growing demand for a British International School education in Riyadh. We firmly believe that several smaller campuses best support the growth and development of children.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF SIXTH FORM Fiona Hanks

Head of Sixth Form and Geography Teacher

The Class of 2021 …. What an amazingly resilient group of students you have been. None of us expected the school closures to continue into this academic year and certainly not for the schools to remain closed for the entirety. Having been sent home 6 months into your Sixth Form time, half-way through Y12, this has stretched on to include the whole of Y13. But despite losing your A level years, and many of the additional activities that go with being part of the BISR Sixth Form, you have all managed to remain incredibly engaged in school life, displaying outstanding levels of attendance and enthusiasm, when apathy could easily have taken over. As we have lurched from one set of guidance and rules to another, and then to three more changes of guidelines – particularly where exams are concerned – your ability to adapt and roll with the changes has shown just how flexible you can be.

The Student Leadership Group and particularly our Head Boy, Abbas Akbari, and Head Girl, Diya Nadeem, have been key players in advocating for the Sixth Form student voice during these uncertain times. Raising issues related to not only academic subjects, exams and how grades will be awarded, but also advising me on the important issues of well-being days, Graduation celebrations and why white is a better colour than navy for the Leaver’s Hoodies!

I must also mention the outstanding team we have in Sixth Form supporting our students; Y12 has been adeptly led by Ms Damaree (who we were all so happy to welcome back to BISR this year), with her team of Y12 Tutors, Mr McGrah, Mr Hardy, Mr Salom and Mr Vassey. In Y13, Mr Dube, Madame Pavlicic (who is sadly leaving us) and Mr Godfrey have continued to offer excellent support and guidance to the Y13 students. Of course the support of our Deputy Head, Mr Daly, has been calm and consistent as ever. But most of all, I don’t think any of us would have made it this far without our outstanding Admin Assistant, Mrs Hussain who keeps us all on track and in line – thank you all.

Year 13 - I will miss our lengthy Futures Q&A’s as well as the chorus (cacophony?) of “Bye Miss” at the end of our remote assemblies, but most of all I will miss you, the Class of 2021. I wish you all the best of luck for your next steps to independent living and studying for university degrees. Please stay in touch, maybe pop by for a Google Meet now and then, and do let us know how you are getting on.

Wow! What a year it has been!

Being Head of Year for this current cohort of Year 12 students has been particularly special for me as I was their Year Leader way back when they were little cherubs in Year 7. When I left my first stint at BISR in 2018, they were in Year 9. You can imagine my shock when I saw how they had all grown up by the time I had returned in August 2020! Some of them are now towering over me with beards and deep voices like James Earl Jones announcing, ‘This is CNN!’ It has been an emotional rollercoaster of a year but I have been very proud of their resilience, perseverance and Growth Mindset during these challenging times.

Some of the highlights of this year have included our Well-Being Day when they worked on a STEM project called the Egg Drop Challenge; their ingenuity and creative minds gave rise to amazing models.

Our Year 12 students have also seized every opportunity to continue to build on their leadership skills through the House system, the Service Learning Committee and as Form Representatives. We have many budding leaders of the future who have taken a keen interest in the wider aspects of school life.

To prepare themselves for life beyond the Sixth Form, they have also explored their university and career options in the Futures sessions and we launched the READ, LEAD, SUCCEED! initiative where our students have shared their passion for reading and encouraged their peers to adopt a similar zeal for reading beyond their academic subjects. Besides this, our students also had the opportunity to take part in work experience interviews, hone their interview skills in the process; this was organised and led by our Careers and Higher Education advisor, Mr Hind.

It has been a unusual year but we have made the most of it! Enjoy a well-earned summer break and I look forward to welcoming you back in Year 13 as you embark on the next chapter of your educational journey and your last, memorable year at BISR.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD BOY AND HEAD GIRL Diya Nadeem

Head Girl 2020-21

As we bid adieu to the academic year, I find myself looking over the unimaginable past year. Many of us missed out on opportunities we had long looked forward to, myself included; the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic has made this year incredibly sombre and solemn, with a significant proportion of members of our community having suffered from the repercussions of the disease.

Despite the severity of the situation, our school community has still strived to help comfort students, to the best of their ability, ranging from Well-Being Days/Curriculum Days to enabling the continuation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

One of my fondest memories this year was being given the opportunity to attend the remembrance at the house of the British Ambassador.

Soldiers, ambassadors and military officials from all across the world gathered together - albeit socially distanced - to commemorate sacrifice and unity; this proved to be a stark reminder of the struggles humanity has been facing worldwide, sending me the message that although I have faced my own share of difficulties, that I am not alone.

I have been a student at BISR for 10 years, meaning that a bitter-sweet feeling is embedded within me, when considering leaving to begin my journey at university. I will always be grateful to the supportive community, particularly Mrs Hanks and Ms Olds. I’d also like to thank Abbas, for making this challenging year less frightening, and for working so tirelessly. In what we may consider to be the most memorable year for times to come, I’d like to take this chance to say that it truly has been an honour to serve you all, and my best wishes to the incoming Student Leadership Group.

Another year has gone by, and a new yearbook has come out. This academic year, though, was unlike any other. Under Ms Olds’ leadership, we were able to get through these hard times as a community. We never anticipated these circumstances, particularly when it came to attending school online. Where all students persevered, I would like to commend the examination students and applaud them for their diligence and endurance. Many of us lost loved ones as a result of the pandemic, and I would like to express my sympathy to those who are mourning. Via the British Embassy’s Remembrance Day Service, I was able to empathise even more with those who have been experiencing difficulties, not only during these times, but since World War 1. As this is my final year at BISR, I would like to express my gratitude to the school for its support and for providing me with an excellent learning experience since Foundation 1. I will never be able to forget the past 15 years I have spent at BISR.

Moreover, to have worked with Diya, BISR Head Girl, was truly an amazing experience.

Finally, the BISR staff never failed to impress me with how smoothly they adapted to online learning. The Leadership Team should be commended for their success in preparing Curriculum Days, Well-Being Days, and in-school exams.

Mrs. Hanks and Mrs. Hussain deserve special recognition for their assistance to the 2021 Graduates during these times and for making sure we had a graduation experience. I wish the new Student Leadership Group success and hope that they will represent the community with passion and courage.

Higher Education and Careers The pandemic has brought challenges, yet also opportunities, regarding careers and university applications. As day to day business has moved online, so has the ability to connect with universities and employers; previously all interactions of this nature were conducted in person. This year, for the first time, we were able to conduct all careers advice, University visits and employer interactions virtually.

This academic year BISR has hosted virtually over 15 visits of top global Universities, including: UCL, Kings College, Durham University, University of British Columbia, Maastricht University, and Jacobs University Bremen Germany.

All Universities were able to give tailored presentations specially for BISR students.

A big concern this year has been what to add to university personal statements, BISR students continue to be sought after by the top higher education institutions globally due to their value added. Increasingly universities are looking to see students who can bring an added passion to the course, something which BISR students possess in abundance. The additional reading, attending webinars, and project work BISR students undertake as part of their personal statement writing journey, adds huge weight to their applications.

Some university courses require interviews, especially those related to Medicine and Veterinary Science. To assist our students this year, we were still able to provide mock medical interviews virtually, enlisting the support of some of the top UK trained doctors locally to fine tune the interview skills of our aspiring medical students.

Throughout the pandemic we have maintained our strong links with the local business community within Riyadh, enabling us to host Work Experience Interviews virtually for our year 12 students. The basic themes of the course have been maintained, which is designed to empower our students to become future global leaders: Year 7: Yourself and the local community; Year 8: The national and wider community; Year 9: The global community.

This year the course has continued to evolve due to recent international events through the inclusion of the issues surrounding Fake News and the anti-vaccine debate; the recent election of President Biden; and the recent military coup in Myanmar (Burma). There also continues to be a focus on issues which affect the BISR community, particularly around personal well-being and learning to learn. In addition to Alive lessons, from September 2020 PSHE is now also taught once fortnightly on a Sunday afternoon to all year groups.

We have also held numerous Alive events in years 10 and 11, including: Fake News, Citizens Rights, The Vaccine Debate, Consent, Stress and Anxiety, and Women’s rights and safety.

The subject content of Alive will be continually updated to ensure our students can engage in discussion as active global citizens, allowing them to play a role in the community wherever they live.

Library

This year has been a year where we have had to change the way we do things, and we took on the challenge with gousto!

We held our very first virtual author visit, where not one, but five internatinal authors, visited our school during the month of February. Claire Culliford, Adam Bushnell, Nick Arnold, Ross Wellford and Karl Nova each visited a different year group and the student response was phenomenal. The parents were able to order some books from the authors and these were then signed, delivered and distributed.

We celebrated world book day with a virtual book character day on March 4th.

The newly updated Sora app from Overdrive was successfully launched and the available digital library was expanded!

From the 25th April, we were very excited to welcome small groups of students back into the library and were humbled to see the joy on their faces when they got to take some books home.

We will continue to support our students, teachers and community in any way we can to encourage them to keep reading.

Student Services It has been an amazing 2020-2021 in the Student Services department even in this period of COVID induced education delivery. Our three amazing counsellors now reach all the BISR schools supporting in person and remotely. The Learning Support Assistants and SEN teachers have provided online support, subject specific interventions and have done an amazing job with exam support. Keeping our children buoyant in a time when learning remotely can be challenging has been key to supporting wellbeing. Our EAL provision across the school has continued to develop with a highlight being the Mother Tongue morning. Student referrals from parents and teachers to support learning have continued with our SENCo Ms Crawford also supporting families through the IEP process.

This team is at the heart of the school connecting students, teachers, families and the BISR community.

Creative Arts Year 9

Year 9 - Bezold Effect Colour Theory Project Students studied colour theory and experimented with colour changing identity principles. They learned the colour optical illusion - the Bezold effect. They created two identical designs, changing only one colour to make the identical designs appear like two different designs.

The designs were created in google slides with shapes and colours, inspired by Middle Eastern/ Islamic patterns and tile work.

Year 9 Mixed Media Still Life Students created a mixed media still life using pen, pencil and coloured pencil techniques. They worked from photo references and focused on form, texture, proportions and colour.
