1Coffee is Ethiopia’s main agricultural crop accounts for over a quarter of 2 3 export earnings and provides income for about 15 million people, most of them small holder farmers. The coffee industry in Ethiopia supports small and medium-sized enterprises as well as larger exporting, trading and shipping businesses. Ethiopia which is considered as coffee’s birthplace, produces high quality Arabica coffee for both the domestic and international markets

Coffee plays a major role in Ethiopia’s economy and is deeply intertwined with cultural traditions and day to Day living. There are an estimated 15 million people, or approximately 15 percent of the country’s total population, who derive their livelihoods from coffee.

Ethiopia is the single largest African producer of coffee with about half of its production going for export.

In 2010/11 with 498,617 hectares land the production of coffee was 3,705,694.44 hectares and it increased to 700,474.69 hectares with 4,690,911.24 hectors of coffee in 2016/17.

Ethiopia has been importing a significant amount of coffee products from many countries around the world; within the last five years 564.1 thousand KG, that worth’s about Birr 78.8 million has been imported.

As The Ethiopian Revenue (ERCA) report Ethiopia has been exporting a significant amount of coffee products from many countries around the world; within the last five years 139.7 million KG, that worth’s about Birr 78.8 million has been imported. The Coffee Export trend has shown an increased trend due to huge local production of coffee production that shown with in the last five years.

The major coffee importing countries to Ethiopian market are Germany, Saudi Arabia, Japan, United states, Belgium and Korea with export share of 23%, 19%, 14%, 14%, 12% and 6% within 2020, respectively.
