W

hen we embarked on this new project we never realized just how welcoming the equestrian community would be. After 5 years publishing a fashion magazine with numerous accolades and just as many let downs we wanted to direct our focus to something that made all of us, regardless of our careers, happy!

Being happy required being with horses. It wasn’t that long ago, during a holiday party, where I suggested to my fellow riders that we put some focus towards implementing more equestrian into our daily lives.. thus began the discussion of merging our knowledge of design, fashion, photography, marketing, public relations and film with our equestrian routines and EQluxe was born.

It’s been a bumpy ride to say the least. Grand heights with the news of the amazing equestrian and actress SELMA BLAIR signing on to be our FIRST COVER and some lows of discouraging instances but we kept on pushing forward.

Taking the first issue directly to print was a decision that wasn’t taken lightly as we didn’t have much by way of distribution in the beginning and no funding coming in. What we did have was just a bunch of magazines coming our way. I am a true believer that although our online presence will grow, it’s our publication actually being circulated amongst the community to hit home and to become successful and tried and true. It has been our supporters, on both our social media and social circles that have encouraged us to keep on going. Without all of you, this issue wouldn’t be in our hands right now.

We hope you enjoy our Maiden issue as our first step into the Equestrian World via a fashion directive. We hope you will enjoy the marriage of the two. We know in time it will find it’s own voice and emerge as your go-to Equestrian lifestyle publication.

ave you ever wondered how these competing champions travel? We’re not talking about the riders, we’re talking about the horses. Some of these ponies are racking up more miles than most of us will do in a lifetime. We had to find out more about this process so we went straight to the most notable carrier we could think of, Emirates.

In recent years, luxury air travel has become synonymous with Emirates. Over the past 16 years, Emirates has also become the premiere equine air transport and recently Emirates SkyCargo transported close to 100 horses across 3 continents in a few weeks for The Longines Global Champions Tour.

Equestrians are very aware of how difficult it can be to transport horses on the ground let alone in the air. We here at EQluxe wanted to take a closer look at first class air travel for our horses. Personally, I am still in awe of the fact that in first class for us humans you can take a shower and enjoy a completely private cabin.

hat discipline of riding did you choose at first? Are you still pursuing this and why?

English riding was all I wanted. Hunters and equitation.

I was obsessed with George Morris and his reverence for the style of the sport. The attention to detail. The seat. Everything. Beezie Madden, Nicole shahinian.

Those were my Role models. I never had an interest in western. Everything about Hunters and equitation appeals to me. The rhythm.

Why do you feel hunter/equitation spoke to you more than jumpers? These days it seems there’s a jumper class for everyone it’s not 4ft oh wait it’s meters now..And over anymore.

Jumpers thrills me. I wish I had that mind set. I am competitive and really love the thought of training with the goal being to compete. And so jumping does speak to me. I want the highest jumps. I am happiest jumping. But my brain seems too simple. I don’t think I can remember courses. True story. I used to do jumpers and they called me wrong way Blair. I just jumped everything after a while. I have a special knack for jumping off course. Impossible ways of seeing things incorrectly. I will stay out of that arena!

I train with Kelly Jennings at cellar door equestrian near calabasas. She is my hero. It’s a new barn but she is the best I have ever met.

I would train every day, but my new horse skytop ( mr. nibbles) is still green and needs time with Kelly too. So I ride a few times a week.

Never enough. I have taken some time off cause I needed to travel for family and I feel I am back at square one. But my gorgeous horse is coming along beautifully thanks to Kelly.

Do you compete? When is your next horseshow?

I do compete. I used to compete more as a younger person w a parent paying! Ha. But now that I have such a unicorn of a horse, the plan is to show lots. Kelly will take him to some shows first. He won at his first show with her. He is a winner.

I ride in a Devoucoux and I love it. Although if I have a next go around with one, I will get even plushier knee roles.

Hahha. Really. So cozy. Whatever helps. Right?

Favorite breech? We already know you like em baggy..Hahaha.

Breeches. All riding clothes. Obsessed. I started showing in the days of Harry hall and then tailored sportsman. I love the olive khaki. I cannot wear a dark breech to show. I like light against the dark show coat. I still wear my tailored Sportsman or Rompf or Cavalleria Toscana. Love. It has been kind of a joke how I am used to them a bit baggy. Not swimmingly big. Just to allow a bit of room when standing. That was the look with tailored sportsman when I started.

Hard to break me of it. I would buy a 26 but I am a 24. I am getting better. The Iago breeches w/piping and EGO 7 show shirts are lovely. I have one from the photo shoot in fact. No idea how that wound up in my bag. I am serious.

I wear Charles Owens. Fits the shape of my head well. I need a new one for showing.

As a popular working actress and mother where do you find the time?

Riding and learning with Kelly is essential to my life. I will make time. I drop Arthur at school and head to barn and pick him up after. I work odd jobs at moment since Arthur is still young. But when I do get lucky enough to find the right project, I will have to bribe Kelly and my kid to let me train at odd times. It is my lifeline. I desperately want to become a successful rider and horsewoman. Georgina Bloomberg is my role model. I will never be at that level, but her ease and competitive spirit! Love.

Speaking of acting, what can we look forward to seeing you in next? All of us at eqluxe hope to see you in a horse epic soon!!

I have a part in the heathers reboot on paramount tv coming out. And lost in space. I will do a little movie this summer. But I am only now beginning to get serious about roles and acting again. It would be a dream to do a period piece. With riding. Many episodes. So I can afford to show for the rest of my days. Angels, do you hear me?

e all know how difficult it is to just “get away” as an equestrian. A holiday of no horses, no feedings, no clients calling, no horseshow drama are sometimes just a pipe dream. Wouldn’t it be fabulous though? Surely, there is time right? I’ve spent the last 4 years trying, but I know there’s hope out there. So keeping this in mind, we at EQluxe decided to feature two escapes delivering the same luxury and extravagance but in two very different time zones.

hen searching for our very first “Barn Envy” I wanted to find a property that truly made me envious.

Not the negative envy, but the positive kind of envy, where you find yourself so impressed by something that it makes you angry. Walking onto the grounds of LuckyJack Farm I felt that immediate slight burning of desire and envy, and I knew we’d found the right property.

LuckyJack serves as an elite hunterjumper training facility managed by USHJA certified trainer Mickie Sage.

This boutique training facility features a large show ring, turnout, indoor hot walker, and a series of small grass pastures perfect for grazing. Each is well appointed with training necessities and meticulously kept up for the happiest of horses. Being an interior designer by trade, I firmly believe that the space you surround yourself with matters, and LuckyJack has provided a training facility for it’s riders that is not only relaxing, but inspiring. You are surrounded by lush greens, clear blue skies, and beautiful horses, without any other distractions. It’s an atmosphere that made me want to get on my horse and practice quietly for hours.

erhaps the most extraordinary part of the entire LuckyJack facility is it’s barn. If you have never been inside a Blackburn designed barn do yourself a favor and find one to walk into, you’ll be amazed. Blackburn designs are all about air, light, functionality, and of course, looking undeniably chic. Walking into the barn my breath was completely taken away, I was greeted by soaring ceilings topped with wooden beams, and skylights. A cool breeze runs throughout the entire space, greatly reducing any undesirable barn smells like the dreaded ammonia. This keeps the barn environment healthy for humans and horses alike. Dark grey pavers set the perfect base to the wide aisle lined with classic sliding iron and brass stall doors. Each of the sixteen 12x12 stalls has a window to the outside, and cushy yet supportive bedding creating a relaxing and calming home for LuckyJack’s lucky horses. There is something inexplicably special about this barn. My only explanation is that when spectacular design meets extreme functionality, something incredible happens, a space just feels right.

ext to the barn sits LuckyJack’s luxurious clubhouse. The clubhouse boasts 6000 sq. feet of chic entertainment space that includes a full kitchen, lounge, and a beautiful outdoor space with a fire pit and, my personal favorite, a pizza oven. Using rich textures mixed with sleek materials, interior designer Gege Pender gave a luxe, warm, contemporary feel to the space. Walking thru, I felt like I was at someone’s incredibly chic home, rather than a stable clubhouse. Pender has brilliantly hinted at equestrian without being too obvious. She uses wide plank floors, distressed woods, leathers, and iron accents to create the feel of high end stables.

n addition to the spectacular entertainment and lounge areas, the clubhouse holds the LuckyJack tackroom, office, locker room, laundry rooms, and guest suite. The tackroom dawns beautiful cerused oak wood paneling placed in a horizontal pattern, acting as the perfect backdrop for beautiful tack. The locker room resembles a high-end spa with it’s upholstered benches, custom wooden lockers, and luxurious bathroom. The two laundry rooms function in style with bold tile backsplashes, and plenty of space to clean your equestrian gear.

t LuckyJack Farm no detail has been forgotten. It is a warm, inviting, and incredibly chic space for horse and rider alike. As equestrians, we tend to spend more time at the barn than we do at our own homes. For lack of a more creative term, it is our home away from home. What LuckyJack has created is the perfect home for horse, and home away from home for rider. It is high-end without feeling stuffy, comfortable without being dumpy, and just plain inviting. I don’t know whether it was Patrica’s welcoming smile and great stories, the clubhouse and all it’s amenities, or the breathtaking Blackburn barn, but I immediately felt right at home.

My editor nearly had to drag me off the property, because I simply did not want to leave.

here should I start…Probably at the beginning. I remember sitting on my first horse at age 3 and I distinctly remember my brother falling off with me in the hills in Walnut Creek at our family friend’s house around the same time. I lived for ponies as a kid, it was an infliction that has followed me for decades.

Needless to say, horses were always my love and were ingrained in me at a early age. They pulled me through my childhood family issues and kept me strong through the perilous teenage years, and one way or another, I always had my barn mate to count on.

Okay..so it’s a familiar story. Pony girl, show girl until girl finds boys or college, then pony goes away.

We accept the changes or in my circumstance I understood that it’s either the education or the horse. I do not regret the education but I do regret not pursuing a college with an equestrian program.

From what I understood at the time only those more privileged than I pursued show jumping beyond boarding school or college. I was merely a teen in Oregon showing hunter/jumper in the Northwest, doing the best my parents could provide. Like I said, it’s a common tale.

So keeping with this familiar tale, I’ll try to personalize it just a smidge(en) so that you neither feel sorry for me nor condemn me for feeling sorry for myself but at the ripe age of (do I really need to say?) I decided to slowly slide back into riding. It was a ride here and a ride there and I ended up with a friend needing help with her horse so I took him for a summer…that summer ended up being 2 years. Now, I’m back in the thick of it with two horses of my own, a small little boarding barn (4 stalls, don’t get excited) and I’m still riding in a 16-inch custom close-contact saddle from my youth. Yes, I said from my youth.

You can stop laughing. How many of you still fit in your now vintage first saddle? Better yet, how many of you took care of that saddle? I’m somewhere in between…I’m a 16.5/17 possibly and I’m dying to ride in something with new technology as I often consider some amateur showing prospects in the future..or in the least a small cross-country course on my project sport horse.

Now, how do I continue this mid-life seat crisis? I know there are many of you feeling like me. Those of you deciding after years of either career, marriage, kids etc. that the only thing that will make you feel normal again is a frickin’ horse or ideally at least a lesson or two.

So, presently, whilst yearning for my youth, I just

want my horse and myself to be comfy. Enter some intense research, a trainer’s perspective, one saddle fitter from an amazing brand nice enough to loan me a demo and explain to me how things have changed.

When I reached out to trainer Karen Perlow of GrandView farms, I wanted to embark on this journey with someone I not only respected but who I knew wouldn’t make fun of me when I had my first lesson and saddle demo in over 20 years. Karen was an integral part in this whole scenario having introduced me to Victoria from CWD a few weeks before. During our recent chats I had expressed an interest in possibly tackling a few lessons to get my legs back. She of course suggested I think about riding in a new saddle.

CWD offers you the opportunity to test its saddles before you buy them. Their expert will come with several models of saddles meeting your sporting requirements and your horse’s conformation. They will come to your training location to meet you and your horse and understand how you ride to best advise you with no obligation to purchase the saddle.

So it was time to embark on this journey... I had some questions. Best to go to the professionals.

Trainer Karen Perlow of GrandView Farms, Burbank CA Firstly, introduce yourself to our readers…..

I’m Karen Perlow. Ive been a professional trainer for 18 years and started my own business, GrandView Farms in 2007.

So, as you know…I’ve been thinking about getting back into an actual ring and riding for sport again. When someone my age comes to you what’s your first recommendation?

When a potential new client first comes to me regardless of age, I like to discuss their past experiences with horses. Did they ride in the hunter, Equitation and/or jumper? I discuss with them what my program offers for riders and their horses. More importantly, I like to discuss their goals and aspirations.

Based on these goals, I go over the options of lessons, leasing or purchasing their own horse to meet their expectations. The horse industry has developed in so many facets we have an assortment of options at our disposal now.

For someone returning to the scene and getting ‘back

LIVING in the saddle’, I like to go over a list of necessary riding gear you have to have. A rider must have the proper riding clothes, boots, an ASTM helmet, my favorite is the Charles Owen because I have an oval head, those riders with a round head would love the GPA. A saddle that properly fits to their body size is of course the most important. Your first step in return is investing in a great saddle! There is nothing worse then a client not having a saddle or having a saddle from their childhood they still insist on riding in. That saddle from back in the day most likely will be too small for the rider and too narrow for the horse they are riding. My personal preference for my style and body type is the CWD. I’ve had many different saddles in my riding career. Many non custom saddles off the shelf that did not fit properly because I’m vertically challenged. There’s a huge difference in being fitted for a custom saddle and no longer having to struggle wrapping my leg around the horses. Its extremely important to be fitted properly for a saddle.

There is no “one size fits all” in this category! When a client is saddle shopping, the main criteria is the size of the seat and leg flap. For example I am a 16 1/2 deep seat with a 1 Flap. A proper fitting saddle should complement your connection to the horse and keep you well balanced. We look at the choices of a flat, half deep and deep saddle.

The wrong one can completely change a riders position, the rideability and make a rider feel unsafe. A proper fitted saddle helps a horse perform to its best ability as well.

When a client is saddle shopping, I have the CWD rep come out to the barn, assess the riders size and then they bring out multiple options of saddles to try. If the client does not have a horse we will pick a few best fitting and try them on multiple horses with different body types. Its a fun process when you find the saddle you fall in love with! I usually encourage my clients by telling them that getting back in the riding game for an adult is a fun adventure with lots of shopping for the latest and greatest clothing, tack and the horses. Enjoy yourself.

o let the shopping or shall we say “trying on” stage begin! It was a triumphant day, I was heeled up in my shiny new Ariat gear and ready to embark on my first lesson in decades. Sure I’ve been riding almost daily for the last 3 years but there’s nothing like a jump ring at an equestrian facility to bring all the past rushing back in again. Naturally, Karen promised a nice ride….an 18 hander who was a little more pokey than I was use to but easy to concentrate on my seat instead. Let the nerves begin. Victoria from CWD came down to help in the process and she was beyond helpful in fitting and finding something she thought I would be comfortable in. I will say, it’s a process so don’t let your first couple rides discourage you. Your next “stage of your riding life” saddle is waiting for you. Just consult some pros.

Introduce yourself: who are you, what is your position at CWD, what’s your background.

My name is Victoria Soalhat and I have worked for CWD for 3 years now. I am the sales representative in the Los Angeles area. I have been a rider since I was 5 and I tried to have riding as a guide during my life. I started traveling when I was 18 and after arriving here I wanted to stay. Luckily I ended up in an industry I love.

What’s the most important thing, in your opinion, to consider when buying a new saddle?

When you buy a new saddle, you need to try different saddles to make sure it is comfortable for you, your horse and it should help in perfecting your position while riding. The fit in the size of seat and the flap is very important to get your balance right.

What is the first step for a rider in choosing the right saddle?

When a rider wants to choose a saddle he/she needs to try different ones to see which one is going to help in improving their position. The rider is the one who is going to use it, so he.she has to be COMFORTABLE in the seat.

Trying different models to see which one feels THE MOST COMFORTABLE AND FUNCTIONAL is the best route to choose.

How do you fit a rider and their horse? How important is it? Don’t people change from horse to horse? Or move onto to new mounts?

This is the most important, the horse has to have a saddle THAT FITS. During the fitting of the saddle for the horse I make sure there is enough clearance to the wither, it should not be too tight. There should be no bridging under the saddle and it’s important to make sure the balance is good. When a rider changes horses the saddle needs to be check to make sure that the saddle still fits the current horse. With a CWD saddle the panels are anatomic so they fit a wide variety of horses, so we can change if we need to.

What is the difference between a close contact, regular seat, medium seat, deep seat? So many choices..What’s the difference between them?

There are many different types of seat, a flat seat helps a rider to stay in a 2 point and to remain off the saddle. A deeper seat may still remain close contact and helps to a rider to stay in position and to remain more stabilized. All of our saddles are close-contact due to the anatomic panels I mentioned earlier. ..these panels allow the rider to remain very close to the horses back.

Does CWD provide several choices in saddles?

Would a beginner come to you? Or more advance rider? Pony rider? Etc.

Yes we have 30 different type of saddles, and CWD improves their products every year. With all these models to choose from and always looking to upgrade the technology we can pretty much suit any level of rider.

What would you recommend to a woman like myself whose returning back to riding? What saddle after our demo would you suggest?

I would recommend putting you into a semi-deep close contact seat. This will help you to be connected with the horse but also stabilize and secure your seat into something that’s also comfortable.

found myself scrolling through posts and became intrigued. This art work really spoke to me and it wasn’t necessarily the fact that her drawings and paintings were equine in subject matter but there was a feeling in them. Without sounding ridiculous a consciousness. They were moving. So fast forward and I read in her bio that as an artist her focus is on feeling not the horse itself. That is where it all fell into place. I had to do a feature on Donna B or Donna Berstein as she’s known in the formal.

“Horses have always been for me a source of healing, energy and life. I feel closely aligned with the ancient cave paintings; minimalist, primal, intimate.

I experience that connection when I am with or paint horses. That pure and intuitive bliss is what I hope to share in my work.”

Her most recent endeavors have expanded into performance of her art, into “Live Painting”, during which she creates original works at events, galas and fundraisers using her uniquely evolved process. Most notably she has created at Ferdinand’s Ball during Kentucky Derby week, in Ohio at the New Albany Classic, and in Scottsdale in support of Family Promise AZ. Always in conjunction with a Charity Partner, this evolution of her professional career is a highly satisfying and expanding role.

What’s your name?

Donna Bernstein, but I also go by Donna B as a professional name. My business is formally Donna B Fine Art.

Where do you live?

I am originally from NY, have lived in McCall Idaho for the past 15 years, but have also lived in Scottsdale AZ for the past 6 years. I am in the process of moving out of Idaho, so I can spend time between AZ and NY, where my business is most concentrated.

What do you do?

As an artist I paint, and have expanded that creative experience into equestrian design. Through my love of fashion, I have created an equestrian silk scarf collection, as well as fine limited edition jewelry pieces, inspired by my art.

How long have you been a professional artist?

I have been a professional artist for seven years.

When did you begin to feel a connection to horses? Are you a rider yourself?

I was, as they say, “born that way.� The essence of horses was built into my soul. I did not grow up around them; I studied them from books and learned about their conformation, bones, anatomy, finesses and cures, and drew them, so as to create horses into my life. When my neighbors got a horse when I was around 12, I spent all my time with their horses, teaching myself to ride, studying movement in the live horse, and refining my drawings through my teens and imagination. In the process, my signature artistic style was revealed.

I rode for a short period through my teens, but have not always had horses. I now get my horse fix as a partner in an allfemale Thoroughbred racing syndicate, based in NY.

Was this something that came to you later in your artistic endeavors or have you always known you wanted to sketch, sculpt and paint the equine form?

I spent my early professional career in real estate and advertising, but I had been drawing and painting horses since a child. I never really expected to be a professional artist. But when we moved from NY to ID ( as an adult later in life), I re-connected to my artistic energies, and the rest is history.

Are many of your patrons actual equestrians? Or does the love of horses or your artwork for that matter transcend that? In other words, do you find you connect with buyers on different levels through your pieces?

Absolutely. My patrons and collectors are from all walks of life, both equestrians and non. In much the same way that my art was a dream way for me to access horses, I often find that those who deeply connect to my art are the same.

They never had a horse either, and my work often reflects the horses of their dreams - as my art did for me. My work is minimal in style, full of the energy and movement of horses, who are both historic and mythological creatures for us. This connection to my art completely transcends for all buyers, because even equestrians who have formal or realistic horse paintings appreciate and collect my ethereal work.

If you could give anyone advice on becoming an artist what you tell them?

To follow your own path and create what you are drawn to! I am self-directed, self-taught, and that allows for creative playfulness and trial and error. That’s how you learn what you love and what truly expresses you.

Do you do commissioned pieces as well? If an equestrian were to come to you with say a size or placement in mind do you do private consults?

Absolutely. Love commission work, in all sizes and mediums, from a large scale acrylic painting to charcoal sketches or ink drawings. Whatever the client wants in a horse, I can do, and I love creating piece that is custom to the client or project and becomes for them exactly what they were envisioning, and a joy for them forever to appreciate in their home or inspire them in their office.

Often I find that equestrians will come to me and want me to do a painting of their horse, but in my style. I love that!
