Formerly the Energy Generation Conference
JANUARY 26-27, 2021
Welcome
On behalf of the Energy Progress & Innovation Conference Planning Committee, welcome to our first annual EPIC Conference! In its 42nd year, the conference continues to provide educational opportunities for employees in the energy industry (formerly the Energy Generation Conference). This year, more than ever before, we have been forced to evolve. The conference planning committee consists of approximately 30 planning members representing various energy associated industries, vendor companies, and faculty and staff from Bismarck State College. The conference theme will focus on
Adam Dunlop Midwest Ag Energy
the needs of the energy industry and how to best prepare for the changes on the road ahead - a familiar topic for the energy industries we represent.
2021 EPIC Chairman
The 2021 conference is entirely online in a virtual format due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. We still have a world-class live keynote, Ross Bernstein, explaining the Champions Code, followed by an all-star panel including Lynn Helms and Lt. Governor Sanford. There will also be breakout sessions for employees desiring job-specific training or professional development. The bright side of the virtual format is these sessions will be recorded and generally available to registered attendees to view at their convenience.
A special thank you to our sponsors who have stepped up and helped make this conference possible under these unique circumstances. Our mission is to “Energize industry and individuals in a competitive market through education, technology, and networking and we would not be able to deliver this year without the generous support of our sponsors.
THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

Conference History
Association, Montana Dakota Utilities, Minnkota Power Cooperative, Otter Tail Power Company, the Montana Power Company and the United Power Association.
The Energy Generation Conference (EGC) originated in 1979 as a Power Plant Operations Conference held in conjunction with the ND Rural Electric Cooperatives’ Annual Statewide Apprenticeship Training & Safety Conference. A small group of power plant personnel planned the agenda with sessions presented by employees from local power plants and suppliers of power plant products and services.
In 2019, the Energy Generation Conference celebrated 40 years. The planning committee felt it was time to make a change to the conference, to better fit changes in the energy industry and to ensure that it continued to be an event that applied to all areas of industry, not just generation. Energy generation, refining and mining are still vital aspects of energy base load, but wind, solar, and ethanol have all been added to the mix since the original
In order to accommodate the different training needs of each area, the Power Plant Operations Conference separated from the ND REC’s Apprenticeship Training & Safety Conference. The power plant personnel began building their own specialized conference format, and this conference has been growing ever since.
conference was held. The change from the Energy Generation Conference to the Energy Progress & Innovation Conference was a strategic decision to make sure that education and networking are available for all of the energy resources. The conference will still be a great opportunity to strengthen industry connections, showcase products and services, present advances and/or changes
In 1980 the Power Plant Program Advisory Board, which

oversees the Vo-Tech Program, requested that Bismarck Junior College (now Bismarck State College) assist in coordinating the conference. The first conference drew approximately 100 participants from the local area. The additional company sponsors of the first annual Energy Generation Conference in 1980 were Amoco Oil, Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Cooperative Power
Over the past 40 years, the EGC (now EPIC) has grown from a local event of 100 participants into an international event attended by over 2500. Through the contributions of many, the Energy Generation Conference far surpassed the expectations of those who began it may years ago.

The Champion’s Code: Building Relationships Through Life Lessons of Integrity and Accountability from the Sports World to the Business World Keynote Speaker: Ross Bernstein The best-selling author of nearly 50 sports books, Ross Bernstein is an award-winning peak performance business speaker who has keynoted conferences on ALL SEVEN continents for audiences as small as 10 and as large as 10,000. Ross and his books have been featured on thousands of television and radio programs over the years including CNN, ESPN, Bloomberg, Fox News, and “CBS This Morning,” as well as in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and USA Today. He’s spent the better part of the past 25 years studying the DNA of championship teams and his program, "The Champion’s Code: Building Relationships Through Life Lessons of Integrity and Accountability from the Sports World to the Business World,” not only illustrates what it takes to become the best of the best, it also explores the fine line between cheating and gamesmanship in sports as it relates to values and integrity in the workplace. As a working member of the media in his home state of Minnesota, Ross has a unique behind the scenes access to all of the local sports franchises in the area, including the Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, Wild and Gophers. As such, he spends lots of his time in dugouts, club houses, locker rooms, and press boxes — and it’s here where Ross has met and interviewed thousands of professional athletes over the years. Ross' program is all about the DNA of what makes champions in sports so unique and how that relates to business. His PowerPoint is full of amazing photos about inspirational sports stories and about successful teams that tie into ethics and accountability, and about doing things the right way — with respect. There are reasons certain teams win consistently, whereas others don't... and he explains why. It's based largely on the "Good to Great" concept of how the best companies are able to separate themselves from the rest of the pack through servant leadership, by creating a culture of excellence, by developing deeper relationships, and by giving extraordinary customer service. Ross speaks at over 100 conferences per year, mostly at large association conferences, at franchise leadership events, and to Fortune 500 sales groups.

Breakout Presentations Breakout sessions will be available until April 2, 2021.
Beyond Petra Nova: The Next Generation of Carbon Capture in the US Bob Slettehaugh, PE, Kiewit
Time: 30 minutes Petra Nova captures carbon dioxide (CO2) from a 240 MW equivalent slipstream of flue gas from NRG’s 640 MW coal-fired power plant, WA Parish Unit 8. It is the first full scale post-combustion CO2 capture commercial demonstration in the US and the largest in the world. Petra Nova began injecting CO2 for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in January 2017 and has injected more than 3.5 million metric tons of CO2 and produced more than 4.2 million barrels of oil over the past 3 years. While Petra Nova was constructed on time, on budget, and met all performance guarantees another carbon capture facility has not been constructed. In 2019, serious interest in potential postcombustion capture projects in the power sector began and has continued to surge in 2020. The information presented will provide details relative to the current drivers underlying the interest in carbon capture solutions while also comparing and contrasting potential projects with Petra Nova, discuss challenges, and highlight several projects currently in front end engineering development (FEED). While early evaluations focused on coal-fired power plants with EOR, projects currently being assessed include natural gas combined-cycle power plants as well as geologic sequestration. Corrosion Mitigation in Oil and Gas Process Equipment Iain Hall, Integrated Global Solutions
CEMS EPA Compliance & Process Control Utilizing TDL Cross Stack Technology to Monitor O2, CO, CO2, H2O, CH4, NOx & NH3 Slip Gary Cacciatore, CEMTEK
Time: 30 minutes In this presentation, you will learn about the advantages and benefits of using Cross Stack TDL and DOAS technology to measure O2, CO, CO2, CH4, NOx and NH3 on Gas Turbines inlet & Stack monitoring in place of Traditional Extractive CEMS technology. In addition to measuring at the stack location, many Gas Turbine users also monitor gases immediately after the gas turbine to gain turbine efficiency and attain higher MW with a lower turndown. The cross stack TDL/DOAS technology offers gas turbine users a better designed product for the application, and some of the advantages are immediate response time, accuracy, reduced CEMS maintenance and spare parts, life, and extremely lower maintenance costs are just a few of the benefits.

FocalPoint Combustion Optimization - Case Study Results Tim Fuller and Jeremy Brown, Babcock & Wilcox
Time: 30 minutes
Increasing Tube Life & Availability in High Slagging Boilers Patrick Fitzgerald, Integrated Global Solutions
Time: 20 minutes
The FocalPoint combustion optimization system has proven to be a cost-effective means of achieving additional CO and NOx emissions reductions while also lowering O2 for improved heat rate and efficiency. This presentation will show how this system has been successfully implemented on a 700-megawatt (MW) boiler to optimize the logic which directs air flow to the burners, overfire air (OFA) ports, and windboxes, as well as reducing overall O2 to control emissions and improve heat rate. The presentation provides specific results which show the combustion optimization project achieved, and in most cases surpassed its goals. Getting Your Organization Through CHANGE Ted Schick, Schick Learning Corporation
Time: 25 minutes Change is hard - we all know that but there are things we as leadership can do aid in the transition. First step, is this an obstacle or opportunity? In this video, we will list and describe the 11 Steps of Effective Change Leadership from uncovering resistance to critical communication to help organizations navigate change no matter the size.
The presentation discusses the impacts of slagging; operationally, mechanically and economically. High slagging coal directly impacts boiler capacity and efficiency, and indirectly impacts plant availability and profitability. North Dakota lignite produces very aggressive slagging conditions requiring these boilers come offline 4-5 times/year for cleaning, losing about 12 days/year of production. When online, sootblowers damage the tubes, making them prone to failure and/or requiring repetitive maintenance. We will compare and contrast a variety of options that have been used to manage these problems, either by protecting tubes or minimizing slagging. (Some have worked, many have not!) Case examples will be provided.
Managing Ice Formation on Cooling Towers Jeff Ebert, Galebreaker Industries
Time: 20 minutes This session will help to inform plant operations and maintenance personnel on the use of retractable windscreens to manage the formation of destructive ice in the air inlets of cooling towers.
Professional Development Hour certificates will be available after the conference. Certificate requests can ONLY be made between January 27, 2021 and April 2, 2021. After requesting certificates, please allow two weeks for processing. Visit ndepic.com/agenda for the link to sign up!
Thank you to our Energy Sponsors!

Navigating Energy Policy Mark Truax, Pac/West Strategies
Time: 30 minutes Stemming back to the fracking wars, energy has been a hot button topic for years. However, it continues to become more political, and new tactics to limit the oil and natural gas industry with policy are beginning to arise at all levels national, state, and local. Understanding how to navigate the political landscape and address policy threats is more important than ever to the future of the industry and its innovation. This presentation will focus on examples of how political engagement can be successful, as well as how not using it can cause negative impacts. At the end of the session, participants will be provided with ideas on how to go about political engagement and how to implement new political strategies to move their efforts in the right direction.
Optimizing Existing Equipment in Corrosive/Abrasive Services Josh Vines, Duechting Pumps North America
Time: 45 minutes Overview/comparison of typical materials of construction used for slurry pumps and other high wear equipment in corrosive/abrasive services involved in FGD Scrubber systems such as gypsum slurry, bottom ash, fly ash, and limestone slurry. An alternative silicon carbide, epoxy resin-based material called SICcast will be introduced, as well as options to optimize and improve the service life of existing high wear metallic components with SIConit, a SICcast coating material. SIConit repairs will be introduced as a maintenance solution to achieve significant cost savings in reduced spare parts consumption by means of enhanced protection against corrosion/abrasion with SIConit repaired components.
Scaling up the Digital Workforce Mark Hachenski, Emerson

The Day We Will Remember Ricky Rollins, Ricky Rollins Safety Speeches
What Really Motivates your Workforce? (It's not just money) Ted Schick, Schick Learning Corporation
Time: 90 minutes This session covers the inspirational and motivational story of Ricky Rollins. Ricky tells the story of the accident and how he came to realize the impact on his family the accident had. What changed Ricky's life was realizing the potential impact it would have had if he hadn't survived. Safety is about more than protecting yourself… it is about protecting your coworkers, your friends, and your family from a life without you. We’re lucky enough to forget our day-to-day, but when somebody is seriously injured, that’s the day we will remember for the rest of our lives. What happens to you affects the people in your circle, and what happens to them comes right back around and affects you. We're connected to each other, and one unlucky day is all it takes to alter the circles of others for generations to come. It’s not about how one person is affected by tragedy. It’s about how everyone is. Your family, your friends, your coworkers. Your circle. This is NOT safety training for safety professionals. Anyone who has a “circle” should watch this inspirational and motivational presentation! The Role of Hydrogen in a Post-Pandemic World Rick Gasaway, Kiewit

We will assess the differences of traditional hydrogen markets and the driving factors of new hydrogen markets. With hydrogen almost certainly guaranteed in the future energy mix, learn from this session about making hydrogen a benefit for your business.
Time: 30 minutes We, as individuals, own our personal motivation but there are things leaders can do to get the most from our team members as it applies to our work. Money aside, people need fulfilment in their work to succeed and that motivation and satisfaction can come in many forms. In this video, we’ll outline and describe the 9 motivators in the workplace and their role and how to put them into action. What Does it Mean to be a Professional? Ted Schick, Schick Learning Corporation
Time: 20 minutes There is no finer compliment you can receive than to be called a PROFESSIONAL. Professionalism is the foundation of your career success as well as your leadership success. In this video, we list and discuss the 5 keys of your professional success from your competency and expertise to owning your mistakes. From the CEO to the entry-level technician, we all must possess and practice these attributes to be successful - it starts here. Why Welds Crack Jerod Tengesdal, Bismarck State College
