ALL-AMERICANS
MYSTICS MAKE HISTORY WITH THEIR FIRST-EVER NAIA ALL-AMERICANS

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – It’s the finals of the last event of the weekend. The crowd is letting them hear it; they’ve reached their highest volume. They know what’s at stake.
On the track, four runners pound across the banked indoor track. A 200-meter indoor track, it sits on risers at the County Sports and Events Center. When the crowd is silent, you can hear each powerful stride vibrate the temporary support structure as the athletes race by. Now, it’s so loud you can only see the runners. They each grip the baton as they round the corner, headed into the final straightaway, just over 60 meters to the finish line.
Bismarck State sophomore Cayden Kraft holds the baton for the Mystics. He’s tucked by runners from Eastern Oregon and St. Thomas (Fla.) as the final leg of the men’s 4x400-meter relay enters the homestretch. He knows it’ll take everything he has left to win the footrace.
Kraft finds a gap. He makes his way out from behind the pack in lane one, across lane two, and into lane three as the field stretches four-wide down the straightaway.
“ THIS IS WHAT HE LIVES FOR, GO CATCH ‘EM.”
– Julia Hammerschmidt,
Head Coach
Step by step, they push to cross the line in front. They lunge to gain every millisecond possible, but none of them are in front of the Bismarck native who, in comeback fashion, wins the heat as all runners finish within a half-second of each other.
The first of two heats in the finals, it solidifies the Mystics on the podium and propels them to their third place finish in the event. The relay of junior Nathan Mathern, freshman Keaton Saastad, freshman Timol Walters and Kraft has become the first and only BSC athletes to earn bronze or higher at the NAIA level. An incredible feat for a school in just its first year on that stage, but it’s not the only one.
What followed over the course of three days in Gainesville was a breakthrough moment for Bismarck State Track & Field; one built on personal records, fearless performances and athletes who refused to believe they were supposed to wait their turn on the national stage.
The Mystics arrived at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships as newcomers. They left as All-Americans.
Kraft’s anchor leg in the 4x400-meter relay may have provided the final exclamation point, but the momentum had been building all weekend. Earlier Saturday, the sophomore sprinter became the first individual NAIA All-American in school history when he placed seventh in the men’s 400-meter dash with a time of 47.29 seconds. It was another school record for Kraft, who had already lowered the mark a day earlier in prelims with a 47.67.
The relay podium finish only cemented what the weekend had already shown: BSC belongs.
On the women’s side, sophomore sprinter Priviledge Bower delivered one of the top performances of the championships. After qualifying fourth-fastest in the prelims of the women’s 60-meter dash with a school-record 7.49, Bower returned in the finals and placed fourth nationally in 7.45 seconds, earning All-America honors and becoming one of the premier sprinters in the NAIA.
Her impact extended beyond one race. Earlier in the meet, Bower also lowered the school record in the 200-meter dash while placing 16th nationally, giving the

Mystics scoring opportunities and national relevance on both the men’s and women’s sides.
The relay success stretched beyond the 4x400.
BSC’s men’s distance medley relay team, consisting of freshmen Connor Ensign, Daniel Oduse, Xavier Bell and Jakson Ensign, continued their rapid rise throughout the championship. After qualifying for finals in 10:02.16, they returned to run 10:02.14 and finished sixth overall, becoming the first relay team in school history to earn NAIA All-America honors.
That youth movement defined much of the Mystics’ success.
Freshman Connor Ensign entered the mile seeded 15th nationally but raced far beyond his ranking. He advanced through prelims with a then-schoolrecord 4:15.69 before lowering the mark again in the final with a 4:14.84 to place ninth overall. Ensign’s twin brother Jakson followed close behind, finishing 11th in 4:16.24, a personal best that capped one of the strongest distance performances in program history.
Across nearly every event group, BSC athletes found another level.
Mathern narrowly missed the 400-meter final but still delivered a personal-best 48.01 in prelims to place
10th overall after entering seeded 14th. Freshman Tsitsi Karanda added another school record in the women’s 600-meter run, clocking 1:35.22 to finish 15th nationally.
Even performances that didn’t result in podium finishes reflected how quickly the program has evolved. The women’s 4x400meter relay opened the championships with a school-record 3:55.06 before being disqualified following review. Sophomore Kennedy Harter narrowly missed scoring in the triple jump, finishing in a tie for 21st. By the end of the weekend, the numbers told part of the story. The BSC men tied for 21st nationally with 11 points, while the women tied for 43rd with five.
But the bigger story was harder to measure.
It was in the confidence shown by freshmen competing fearlessly against seasoned national contenders. It was in the way school records kept falling almost every event. It was in the image of Kraft charging down the final straightaway, refusing to settle for anything less than first across the finish line.
For a program competing in its first NAIA season, Gainesville was more than a successful championship meet. It was proof that BSC Track & Field had already arrived.
If the indoor season revealed anything, it’s that this group is only getting started.

WOMEN’S WRESTLINGBUILDING A FOUNDATION: MYSTICS WOMEN’S WRESTLING MAKES HISTORY IN YEAR ONE
PARK CITY, Kan. – The final whistle had sounded, the brackets were complete and the first season in program history had officially come to an end. But inside Heartland Credit Union Arena, in Park City, Kan., the significance of the moment for Bismarck State College Women’s Wrestling was only beginning to settle in.
In just their inaugural season, the Mystics had already produced national qualifiers, battled through one of the toughest tournaments in the country, and most importantly, earned the first All-America honors in program history.
For a first-year program still laying its foundation, the NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championship became more than just the end of a season. It became proof of how quickly BSC had established itself on the national stage.
Leading the breakthrough performances was sophomore Rei Ogden, who battled her way to a fourth-place national finish at 124 pounds. Her tournament run showcased the resilience and determination that defined the Mystics all season long.
After receiving a first-round bye, Ogden suffered a quick setback with a first-period fall in her opening match. Instead of fading from contention, she responded with one of the strongest comeback runs in the bracket, winning four consecutive matches to fight her way into the thirdplace bout.
She opened the streak with a 14-9 decision before adding a pin at 2:03 in the following round. Her biggest moment came later in the consolation bracket when she trailed 12-11 late in the match but found an opening and secured a dramatic fall at 4:28, turning a near elimination into a momentum-changing victory. Ogden followed with an 8-3 decision to officially lock up All-America status before ultimately finishing fourth nationally.
Her performance marked the highest finish by any Mystics wrestler at the NAIA level and established her as one of the

top competitors in the country at the 124-pound weight class.
At 131 pounds, freshman Alexis Schneider added another milestone performance for the Mystics.
Coming in as the ninth-ranked wrestler in the division, Schneider pieced together a consistent 4-2 tournament record, advancing deep into the placement rounds and clinching All-America honors with a dominant technical fall victory in her final match. She opened the tournament with backto-back decision wins, 9-0 and 9-2, before dropping into the consolation side of the bracket after a technical fall loss.
From there, Schneider regrouped quickly. She earned a pin at 4:15 to stay alive in the tournament, then narrowly lost a competitive 9-6 decision that sent her into the seventhplace match. In her final bout of the season, Schneider delivered one of
her strongest performances of the year, earning a technical fall at 4:56 to secure seventh place nationally and become BSC’s second All-American.
Together, Ogden and Schneider gave the Mystics their first two All-Americans in program history, an accomplishment few first-year programs achieve so quickly.
BSC also saw freshman Lakota Rogers qualify for the national tournament at 117 pounds, giving the Mystics three national qualifiers in the program’s debut season. While Rogers was eliminated after two tough matches, her qualification itself reflected the rapid development of the roster and added another important building block for the future.
The national tournament served as a fitting snapshot of the season as a whole: a young program learning quickly, competing fearlessly and proving it could belong alongside established NAIA teams.
What stood out most wasn’t simply the placements on the podium, but the pace at which the Mystics accelerated throughout the year. In a matter of months, Bismarck State Women’s Wrestling went from a brand-new program to producing national qualifiers and All-Americans.
That success now becomes the standard moving forward.
With foundational pieces already in place and history already made, the Mystics leave their inaugural season with momentum, experience and the belief that even bigger accomplishments are ahead.

Alexis Schneider finishes second at the Heart of America Conference Championships to punch her ticket to the NAIA National Championships.

PURPOSE MEETS PRACTICALITY

Flexibility and affordability made BSC an easy choice for education student Hunter Hoffman.
For second-year student Hunter Hoffman, the decision to attend Bismarck State College was an easy choice. Not only is campus close to home, but the combination of BSC’s flexibility and affordability makes seeking a college degree entirely attainable.
“I have family that attended BSC. Campus is close to home, and the tuition is very affordable,” Hunter says. “It just made sense.”
Outside of class, Hunter is passionate about golf, baseball, traveling and spending quality time with his family and friends.
Hunter is dually enrolled at both BSC and Valley City State University (VCSU). He is on track to graduate in 2028 with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Foundations of Teaching from BSC, along with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from VCSU. This strategic combination of dual degrees will provide him with the credentials to enter the workplace fully equipped to start a career in elementary education.
BSC’s coursework has been uniquely valuable as Hunter works toward a career as an elementary teacher. On brand with BSC’s polytechnic commitment, Hunter expressed how thankful he is for the coursework’s realworld, hands-on approach.
“ I had lots of practice with creating assignments and experiencing real-life scenarios that prepare you for in the classroom after college. I learned about different topics, like working with students with disabilities.”
– Hunter Hoffman
Hunter expressed how his teachers are both exceptional and very responsive whenever he has questions, even in his
fully online classes. He has already had the opportunity to shadow classrooms to get a feel for the day-in-the-life as an elementary teacher. As he progresses through the program, he will complete student teaching hours to prepare him to enter the workforce with both confidence and experience.
After graduation, Hunter is aiming for a teaching position in the Bismarck area to stay close to his friends, family and community.
In light of his positive experience so far, he views BSC as a clear path forward for anyone seeking reliable and affordable education. Hunter is also a recipient of the Adrian & Ardeth Taylor Memorial Scholarship.
“You’ll save some money; it’s a good program that allows you to go at your own pace, and you don’t have to rush through it,” Hunter says.
BSC’s adaptable, cost-conscious approach to education puts his future goals well within reach.

DUAL CREDIT, DONE DIFFERENTLY.

On any given Wednesday in a rural North Dakota high school educational setting, you might find students gathered around hydraulic trainers, troubleshooting faults or calibrating systems — the kind of hands-on work typically reserved for a college lab or workforce-ready classes.
Thanks to a growing partnership model, Bismarck State College is bringing that experience directly into high school regional Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers, expanding access to advanced manufacturing and energy education for students across the state.

EXPANDING ACCESS IN ND RURAL COMMUNITIES
In many rural districts, high school students have strong interest in technical careers but limited exposure to the pathways that lead there. Travel distance, cost and equipment needs can make it difficult to offer specialized training locally.
BSC’s dual credit model is helping close that gap.
Through partnerships with CTE centers, high school students can earn a Mechatronics I certificate or an Operator I certificate while they are still in high school. These programs provide foundational training in safety practices, industrial science, mechanical drives, hydraulics, DC/ AC electrical systems and print reading, which are skills closely aligned with North Dakota’s workforce needs.
“ This is all about bridging the gap. ”
– Mandi Eberle, BSC Assistant Dean

COLLEGE-LEVEL LEARNING, CLOSE TO HOME
Rather than requiring students to travel to campus, BSC faculty travel to the regional CTE centers. Industry-trained instructors deliver curriculum on site and provide hands-on lab experience, using industry-grade equipment.
“ This partnership removes geographic barriers by bringing college-level technical education directly into their high school experience. ”
– Lyle Krueger, Assistant Director at Central Regional Area Career and Technical Center.
The program is currently a pilot program and has already demonstrated strong interest. Enrollment of 53 students in Fall 2025, followed by another 44 students in Spring 2026, shows the growing demand for advanced technical training delivered locally.
Current regional CTE partners include:
• Central Regional Area Career and Technical Center (Bismarck)
• Southwest Area Career and Technical Education Academy (Dickinson)
• Williston Basin Career and Technical Education Center (Williston)
• James Valley Career and Technology Center (Jamestown)

CREATING CLEAR CAREER PATHWAYS
Students who complete the certificate can enter the workforce directly after graduation or continue seamlessly into BSC’s two or four-year degree programs. Because courses are offered as dual credit, students also benefit from reduced tuition rates, making college-level education more affordable for families.
At its core, the initiative reflects BSC’s broader commitment to serving communities across North Dakota. By delivering programs beyond campus walls, the college is helping ensure that where a student lives doesn’t limit what they can pursue.
As the pilot continues, BSC is exploring opportunities to expand the model to additional rural communities. The ultimate goal is to lend support toward strengthening workforce pipelines while creating new possibilities for students close to home.

For Greg and Yvette Bavendick, Bismarck State College is more than an institution; it is a community they describe as a “second family.” Their connection to the college is a story of family tradition, humble service and a vision for the future.
The Bavendick family’s deep-rooted connection with BSC began with Greg’s late father, Frank, a former Bismarck Junior College track athlete in 1949-50 whose loyalty to the college spanned a lifetime. More than just a fan in the stands, Frank was a constant presence within BSC athletics. He frequently joined students for workouts in the Armory, building genuine relationships with the athletes.
Frank’s unwavering support paved the way for Greg and Yvette to deepen their own connection to the college. While attending games alongside him, they witnessed the interaction between Frank and the BSC community, particularly the student-athletes. Yvette recalls these interactions sentimentally. “When we walked in there, everybody was greeting Frank. It’s just like one big family.” These interactions inspired them to build their own relationship with BSC, carrying on the Bavendick family’s legacy of support.
Greg and Yvette have become pillars of the BSC community, with their support extending beyond financial contribution. They are a constant, encouraging presence on campus, attending nearly every athletic
event and team send-off to cheer on the Mystics. Their presence means just as much as their generosity to the studentathletes they support. As Nick Pegors, a junior track and field athlete, shared, “Not only do they provide many of us athletes with scholarships, but they also show their support by being in the stands, cheering us all on.”
For the Bavendick family, student success is at the heart of their philanthropy. This philosophy started with Frank and Joanne decades ago. This year alone, their generosity has provided nearly 200 scholarships to students in athletics and the energy programs, which are of importance to the family. Despite the scale of their impact, the Bavendicks remain

humble, often shying away from the spotlight. “I’m happy that I know that people appreciate it,” Greg remarked. Their reward is in the hundreds of thank-you cards they receive each year from the students they have helped. They treasure those messages, reading and keeping each one.
This desire to help others is one of the reasons the Bavendicks provided the lead gift for the college’s new athletic building. Recognizing the serious need for an upgraded facility, they wanted to create a better experience for both students and guests.
The project also serves as a tribute to Frank. According to them, it was a no-brainer. “We didn’t have second thoughts about it. This is something that Frank always wanted,” Yvette mentioned while recalling that Frank had discussed renovating the Armory with former BSC athletic director Buster Gilliss, but that he believed a new facility was the best option for BSC’s future. By making the Bavendick Center
possible, Greg and Yvette have turned Frank’s dream into a reality.
Greg and Yvette view the Bavendick Center as more than an asset to campus; they see it as a boost to the entire Bismarck-Mandan community. They hope to see the facility bring more large-scale events and tournaments to the region while also serving as a recruitment tool for the college. “It is truly gonna be the nicest facility for basketball, volleyball and wrestling in the state,” Greg shared. This addition will benefit everyone who steps on campus.
As BSC continues to grow in enrollment and expand its athletic programs, the Bavendicks are excited to see what the future holds. They look forward to seeing the stands filled with fans enjoying the experience. While you can always find Yvette as the biggest cheerleader in the stands, she hopes to eventually see cheerleading return to the sidelines to energize the crowd and lead the Mystic spirit.
The legacy Greg and Yvette Bavendick are building at Bismarck State is more than bricks and mortar; it is an investment in people. Through their generosity, they have created a campus that feels like home and a place where students find opportunity and athletes feel truly supported.
Their dedication to BSC ensures the college remains a welcoming home of opportunity and a vital part of the Bismarck community that they value. The Bavendicks’ spirit of giving will leave a mark on the lives of students for generations to come.
“ The Bavendick family represents the very best of what it means to be part of MysticNation. Because of their support, generations of students will have access to opportunities that shape their futures in academics and athletics. ”
– Dr. Dan Leingang, Vice President for Operations/ Chief Operations Officer

CATALYZING CAMPUS LIFE AND ATHLETIC ADVANCEMENT AT BSC

It was talked about. Built up. Counted down. And now, it’s finally open!
On May 6, Bismarck State celebrated the long-awaited grand opening of the Bavendick Center, the new “Home of the Mystics.” Together with students, employees, donors, alumni and community members, the college celebrated with an official ribboncutting and an evening packed with activities and Mystic pride, including tours of the new facility, a Mystics basketball showcase, an alumni mixer, a donor social, and, of course, Mystics swag.

Just days later, the new facility served as the backdrop for another historic moment as the BSC Class of 2026 became the first graduating class to celebrate inside the Bavendick Center. During the college’s 86th Commencement Ceremony on May 15, graduates crossed the stage in front of family and friends gathered in a packed arena, creating one of the first major traditions at the facility. The ceremony highlighted not only the accomplishments of BSC’s graduates but also the college’s continued momentum as it enters a new chapter of growth and opportunity.
More than just a sports complex, the Bavendick Center, affectionately known as “The Bav,” was built to serve the entire BSC community. From recreational opportunities to competitive athletics and large-scale events like graduation, the facility is a central gathering place for students, fans and visitors alike.
Students supported the initiative primarily to improve campus recreation and accessibility, replacing the outdated Armory building that didn’t meet current standards and lacked proper ADA accessibility for all athletes and guests.

In 2023, BSC students, led by the Student Government Association, supported a ballot initiative to help fund a new multipurpose facility. More than 82% voted in favor of a student fee increase to help cover a portion of the cost. Overall, construction of The Bav is funded by a combination of student fees, a significant lead gift from the Frank and Joanne Bavendick family and many other community donations.
The Bavendick Center’s vast array of features is designed to make it a true gathering place for competition, events and activity. The nearly 2,000-seat arena, private club seating for 100, nine executive suites, full-service bar and concessions and a state-of-the-art sound and video system create a first-class, game-day atmosphere for fans and athletes. For student-athletes, The Bav represents a major step forward in training, competition and the overall game-day experience. BSC Director of Athletics Jason Harris says the facility ranks among the finest in the Frontier Conference and the NAIA, providing upgraded spaces that will help elevate both performance and fan engagement.

“ IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT THAT’S CREATED HERE; THE ATMOSPHERE. ” HARRIS SAYS.
“ IT’S A PLACE WHERE STUDENTS WILL WANT TO COME WATCH THEIR MYSTICS COMPETE. ”
Beyond competition, the facility features a climbing wall, a digital sports simulation room and an esports lab, giving students hands-on opportunities to train, compete and connect in new ways. The Bavendick Center also serves the broader community, offering public access to an indoor walking track, a team store and a refreshment shop that’s open daily during the week, making it a year-round destination for wellness and engagement.
According to Harris, the investment in a modern facility enhances athletics, BSC campus life and the wider public.
“The Bavendick was proposed and built to serve both the entire campus and the community as a whole,” Harris says. The impact of the Bavendick Center extends beyond BSC athletics. Beginning this summer, the facility will host several high school sporting events, including the Lions All-Star Basketball Game in July and the North Dakota High School Activities Association Class B Region 4 Volleyball Tournament this fall, bringing studentathletes, families and prospective future Mystics to campus.

While the grand opening and the college’s first commencement ceremony in the facility marked historic milestones, they represent only the beginning of The Bav’s story. As students, student-athletes and community members gather within its walls for competitions and campus events, the Bavendick Center will continue to serve as a place where connection and Mystic pride come together. time on Sept. 18.

SHAPING GENERATIONS THROUGH EDUCATION & COMMUNITY

On a quiet stretch of land just outside Bismarck, acres once purchased with vision and hard work have blossomed into what is now known as Silver Ranch. It’s more than a development project. It’s a testament to faith, family and a deep belief in education that has shaped generations of the Silbernagel family.
Originally from Napoleon N.D., Jim Silbernagel earned his Doctor of Optometry from Pacific University in Oregon. It was there that he met Nadeane, an Oregon native, and the couple married in 1958. In 1960, they moved to Bismarck, where Dr. A. James started his practice at the Missouri Valley Clinic and later established the Capitol Vision Clinic
in 1967. Having previously farmed in Napoleon and Dawson N.D., Jim purchased a farm northeast of Bismarck in 1971. While the family maintained their primary residence in town, the farm served as a secondary place where the family kept busy with chores, taking care of animals and enjoying the outdoors. That same land has since been thoughtfully planned and developed into Silver Ranch, with Investcore, Inc. continuing the family’s investment in the community.
Outside of the farm, Nadeane’s natural ability to connect with people led her to professional and volunteer roles where she could support her neighbors and advocate for the community. For Nadeane, life has always been about connection. “Strangers are just friends waiting to be met,” she
says, a philosophy that has guided her through every season of life. Nadeane quickly became part of Bismarck’s foundation, building lasting relationships at Job Service North Dakota, North Dakota Safety Council and later founded the Bismarck Safety Village program in 1982, now operated by the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District.

Jim and Nadeane Silbernagel
Having already earned her degree before moving to Bismarck, Nadeane joined Jim in stressing the importance of a college education to their children. The couple found a natural home with Bismarck Junior College (BJC), valuing its welcoming atmosphere and practical educational model. What stood out most was that BJC welcomed everyone, recent high school graduates, parents returning to school and older, non-traditional students looking to start something new.
“So many people are now successful and own businesses because of their education from Bismarck State College.” Nadeane values BSC’s affordability and practicality. “You can walk out with something you can do for life.”
Their eldest daughter, Donna, was the first to attend BJC, though her journey there was not direct. After initially attending in-state universities, she returned to Bismarck, unsure if she wanted to continue college. Encouraged by her father to attend a BJC college fair, she wandered until she found a table labeled “Management Degree.” Organized and a natural planner, she immediately saw herself in that path. Donna flourished at the college under the mentorship of faculty Jim Wright and Murray Turner, and Carla Bickert. She joined the Marketing Club and qualified for the national DECA
She could work while paying tuition, and the smaller class sizes allowed her to build meaningful relationships with instructors and fellow students. Donna’s memories of the campus are centered around a vibrant, close-knit community where the Student Union and the Armory restaurant served as the heartbeat of student life. Though the college has evolved into a modern institution, she believes it still provides a sense of belonging that has shaped generations of her family.
Donna’s commitment to the college evolved from student to advocate as she spent decades bridging the gap between Bismarck’s high schools and Bismarck State. Throughout her teaching career at Century High School and her work with the Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy, she fostered collaborations between programs and eventually returned to BSC as a Tech Prep and Career Resource Coordinator for the SW Region of ND, proudly ushering new generations into their futures. She has served multiple terms on the BSC National Alumni Association and served as president from 2024-2025.
The Silbernagel family’s connection to BJC/BSC is a true multi-generational legacy. Eight family members across three generations have walked its halls, but perhaps their most remarkable milestone was having all three generations enrolled in a single class. Nadeane shared a classroom with her daughter, Donna, and her granddaughter, Janna, a unique experience Nadeane remembers fondly: “You couldn’t live your life without going to a Mike McCormack class.”
The family’s impact on Bismarck is reflected in the Silbernagel name, which translates roughly to “silver nail,” while

education, ensuring that history and education remain a part of the community.
The presence of the carpentry house built by BSC students on this land serves as a symbol of the relationship between the college, Investcore, Inc., and the family.
When asked to describe BSC in one word, Nadeane smiles and says it cannot be done. Her favorite memories include attending concerts, music activities, watching plays, and hearing community speakers who shared knowledge she could pass on to others. Along with attending these activities with family and friends. Donna’s favorite memory is simple: sitting on the hill overlooking the river at sunset, reflecting possibilities, purpose, and being grateful for life.

For the Silbernagels, BSC has been a defining force that helped shape their values and careers across generations. By staying rooted in the Bismarck community they love, the family built successful lives without sacrificing their close-knit togetherness. They wholeheartedly encourage their future generations to find their own path at the institution. For them, BSC has always been the bridge between family, career and community. They hope this legacy continues not only through their children and grandchildren, but through other families in Bismarck.
The Silbernagel story is not simply about one family success. It is about a community college that opened its doors and became part of a family’s identity and about a family that, in turn, gave back to the community it calls home.
Jim and Nadeane Silbernagel
2025-2026
