ENERGY SERVICES & RENEWABLE TECHNICIAN (ESRE) The Energy Service & Renewable Technician program prepares graduates for field service technician careers in the rapidly expanding energy industry.

Students will gain broad based technician skill sets required in the conventional and renewable energy industry or other similar industries that employ technical processes. Students receive a broad background in electrical and mechanical fundamentals, equipment and systems, instrumentation, automation and print reading. Coursework emphasizes theory and handson applications of applied electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, electric motor control, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA, wind turbine systems, solar photovoltaic systems, and safe work practices. INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL (ICTL) This program provides students with the basic knowledge needed for an entry level position as an instrument technician. Graduates have an opportunity to gain employment in a wide variety of industries including: process, petroleum, electrical generation, chemical, pharmaceutical and manufacturing. These technicians are needed to troubleshoot, repair and maintain measurement equipment and control systems in an industrial process.

LINEWORKER This program is designed to educate students to become skilled apprentice lineworkers. Classes are held and skills practiced at the electrical lineworker program’s facilities north of Mandan, North Dakota. This includes twenty acres of land for outside training, and inside laboratories and classrooms.

A lineman works outdoors much of the time and has to respond to weatherrelated problems with transmission and distribution lines, sometimes in the middle of the night and in very challenging weather conditions. A person in this career climbs poles or uses truck-mounted buckets to access equipment.

Among many other duties, a lineman opens switches or attaches grounding devices to remove electrical hazards from disturbed or fallen lines or to facilitate repairs. They are among the first to be called to respond to power outages.

A doctor’s examination, drug screen, and eye examination for CDL permit is required after acceptance into this program. Attendance at two courses in the summer semester is required before students will be allowed to enter the Lineworker program in the fall.

Additional online only program offerings Online program offerings provide flexibility and options for students who are looking to advance their careers, gain additional knowledge, or transition to the energy industry. All online courses at BSC are instructor-led and utilize state-of-the-art animations and simulations to provide online students with the knowledge and skills needed for hands-on energy careers.

A hands-on, online experience Online students at the Bismarck State College National Energy Center of Excellence enjoy the flexibility of completing courses or a degree program built for those who cannot attend classes on campus, but are still able to get the same hands-on experience as their on campus counterparts.

Online courses include simulations, animations, discussions, and real-time lab sessions operating real equipment. Online students may be also required to demonstrate proficiency with equipment through brief on-campus labs or shadowing at an approved facility.

Students enrolled in Energy Services & Renewable Technician, Power Generation Technology, Process Technology, Petroleum Production Technology, or Water & Wastewater Technology are required to complete 80 hours of coursework in an industry setting related to their program of study. This course, Practical Applications, allows online students the opportunity to gain firsthand experience as it relates to their major. Online students are placed with partnering facilities and assigned to a mentor under whom they will complete a checklist of competencies. These competencies are contained in a workbook that is mailed to the facility, and then returned by the facility to BSC upon completion of the job shadow. This is the final course that a student completes before they are eligible to graduate from their program.

ELECTRIC POWER TECHNOLOGY (ELPW) Electric Power Technology is an instructor-led program created in collaboration with the Energy Providers Coalition for Education (EPCE) and developed for current and future electric utility workers. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OFFERINGS INDUSTRY PREPARATION COURSE OFFERINGS Orientation to the Electrical Industry Designed for new hire orientation and employee training programs for all positions in utility companies, the course familiarizes students with today’s electrical industry and covers: • History of the industry, including creation, development and structure of the industry • Three sectors of the industry and the roles of each • Deregulation • New technology • Future of the industry SMART GRID COURSES Smart grid technology is being integrated worldwide, and BSC is part of making sure energy industry employees are ready for it.

Through a U.S. Department of Energy Grant, the National Energy Center of Excellence has collaborated with the Energy Providers Coalition for Education (EPCE) to offer Smart Grid courses. These technically-advanced, self-paced, online courses will address new technologies and operation procedures for Smart Grid deployment.

• Smart Grid, Smart Consumer • Renewable Energy Sources and the Smart Grid • Operation Considerations for the Smart Grid • Impact of the Smart Grid APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS Apprenticeship Training combines theoretical instruction with on-thejob training to prepare high-quality, skilled workers to meet the demands of a competitive economy. BSC develops customized apprenticeship programs for you utilizing course work from our degree programs to meet training objectives, delivery method and timeline. At the completion of each program, apprentices receive a certificate of completion. If an employer choses to have a program approved by the Department of Labor as a Registered Apprenticeship Training Program, BSC will support the requirements as needed. Programs developed include: Mechanical Maintenance, System Protection Technician, Metering Technician, Relay Technician, Telecommunications Technician, and Substation Technician.

Great Plains Energy Corridor The Great Plains Energy Corridor was created at Bismarck State College in 2008 through the efforts of former U.S. Senator Byron Dorgan. The Energy Corridor, housed at BSC’s National Energy Center of Excellence, works with partners in government, education and the private sector to facilitate activities, events and informational exchanges that promote North Dakota’s abundant and varied energy resources.
