Welcome to the 41st Energy Generation Conference!

For four decades, the annual Energy Generation Conference has been the premier regional forum for engaging and connecting with your peers in the energy industry in North Dakota and surrounding states.

We’ve grown into a conference to be proud of -- bringing 300+ vendors and as many as 2,000 participants, students and guests from across the country together every January.

For this year’s conference, the EGC committee focused on what’s next in energy and for this event. Stay tuned for a major announcement during the conference that ties to our newly adopted mission to “energize industry and individuals in a competitive market through education, technology, and networking”.

We’ve got two keynote presenters this year. On Wednesday and Thursday morning you’ll hear from Kyle Maynard, a true inspiration. Kyle’s “No Excuses” presentation will delve into how he overcame the obstacles he was born with and became a successful speaker, athlete and mountaineer.

Both days will close with keynote sessions from José Pires, who will present “Energy Disruption: How Great People and Organizations Innovate in Times of Rapid Change”.

You don’t want to miss José – not only will we again give away travel package worth $2,000 each day, he’ll be sharing some very exciting news about the future of the EGC.

In addition to the keynotes, each day will also feature a variety of breakout sessions where you’ll learn about trends in industry and valuable tips you can take back to your work site. Also, don’t forget to stop in the exhibit hall and visit with our vendors, representing over 34 states and several Canadian provinces.

As usual, our Exhibitor Showcase Social on Tuesday night is your first opportunity to see what our vendors have to offer for 2020. It’s the only time the exhibit hall is open to the public, so invite your family! And, don’t forget Casino Night on Wednesday at the Ramkota Hotel and Conference Center. It’s always a great crowd and a good time!

Born with a rare condition known as congenital amputation, that left him with arms that end at the elbows and legs that end near his knees, he learned early on to live life independently, knowing that exceptions wouldn’t be made for him. He has lived his life striving to do more, learn more, push harder, go further – and to inspire others to do the same by sharing his story and living by example.

His accomplishments as an athlete, and now mountaineer, speak for themselves.

Kyle has learned many valuable lessons through training and sports, wins and defeats, scrambling and summiting. Each of us face a challenge or an obstacle, and Kyle shows others that they’re capable of persevering and achieving greatness in their lives as well, even if that means sometimes failing along the way.

2020 EGC BREAKOUT SESSIONS ELECTRICAL ELECTRICAL HAZARD CLASSIFICATIONS - WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO WE ACCOMMODATE THEM? Review of the electrical hazard classifications, including I.E. Class 1 Div 2 BCD and what each portion represents.

A discussion as to the difference between explosion proof and intrinsically safe. When one may be used over another. Samples of explosion proof devices and then a discussion on the typical installations tying them to the NEC requirements. The importance of seal offs and what can potentially happen when there is a gas path through conduit to an arching and sparking source. Discussion on the importance when pressurizing a room or cabinet to declassify an area not to compromise the pressurization without a gas sniff of the area.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES ND CARBON MANAGEMENT PROJECTS This panel focuses on technology developments directed at carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). North Dakota has an opportunity to take advantage of the commodity value of carbon dioxide and is proving to be a leader in moving technology toward commercial application. Projects that are ongoing as part of the State / Industry partnerships in the Lignite and the Oil and Gas Research Programs will be highlighted. Panelists will provide updates on technologies under consideration for carbon dioxide capture at the Milton R Young and Coal Creek power plants, the subsurface work for carbon storage being performed in the CarbonSAFE project, and the breath of work being performed under the ongoing Plains CO2 Reduction Partnership.

ND CARBON MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES This panel highlights the opportunities as well as the challenges associated with commercial application of technologies toward carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). There can be sensitive relationships between technology, policy, economics, finance and public perception. North Dakota has led the way in all of these areas to create opportunities for commercial CCUS applications. Panelists will present on Federal and State regulations and policy, industry and state economics, oil and gas (enhanced oil recovery) and also opportunities and challenges facing the utility industry.

This presentation will discuss the history and technology of electric vehicles, and the current and projected future impacts to the bulk electric system.

ENGINEERING MOTION AMPLIFICATION; CASE STUDIES IN POWER GENERATION Motion amplification software detects and measures subtle movement and converts that movement to a level visible with the naked eye. By turning every pixel in the camera into a sensor, the method takes millions of measurements in a fraction of a second, and it does this with no physical connection to your machinery or equipment. This allows you to quickly and easily see and communicate what is invisible to the naked eye and transition to analysis and root cause problem-solving. Case studies in the power generation industry will be highlighted demonstrating reallife mechanical and structural issues and corrective action.

2020 EGC BREAKOUT SESSIONS WIRELESS SENSOR TECHNOLOGY As technology continues to change and evolve many wireless vibration systems continue to be released, but some manufacturers have waited patiently to release their own. While some include monthly or annual fees for remote analysis, others have a one time fee. Some have overall vibration only while others have spectral/ dynamic data. In this presentation we will discuss various wireless sensor/module systems and their advantages, disadvantages, and how to determine the best fit for your applications.

Presenter: Eric Fritz, I&E Technologies LLC Date: Wednesday, January 29, 2020 Time: 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm NORTH DAKOTA’S FUTURE LOAD GROWTH PROJECTION In early 2019 Barr completed the Power Forecast 2019 which was funded by NDIC, and estimated the new electrical energy generation required to power oil and gas production for the next 20 years. This presentation will summarize the results of that study. Additionally, the recently announced developments for petrochemicals manufacture will require additional electrical energy. This session will present estimations of those new loads for the coming decades.

Date: Wednesday, January 29, 2020 Time: 2:15 pm - 3:15 pm UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS: NORTH DAKOTAS NEXT GREAT ECONOMIC DIVERSIFIER Unmanned Aircraft Systems are an economy unto themselves. On the homestead of North Dakota, UAS stand poised to make a dramatic impact on the state economy in the near future. One of North Dakota’s most well-known economies, that of energy, appears to be the sector UAS are best suited to serve. With increases in safety and time savings, and decreases in risk and costs, UAS are possibly being underestimated as tools in energy. This discussion aims to show where we’ve been, how North Dakota is deriving value now, and what the prominent energy sector can look forward to with UAS. OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY OF CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS The session will include provide best practices for common pump problems including suction and discharge recirculation, as well as wear ring clearances as a focal point in modern maintenance strategies. In addition, the presenter will provide an in-depth analysis on how predictive vibration analysis, realized through the advent of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and sensor technology, can optimize critical asset reliability and detect early signs of pump failure and degradation. Topics will include the Lomakin Effect, radial loads, static/dynamic bow, centerline compatibility, comparison of calculated brake horsepower, and calculation of the wear ring clearance in achieving optimum performance.

Date: Thursday, January 30, 2020 Time: 9:45 am - 10:45 am PLANT EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENTS PROVIDED THROUGH ADVANCED PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE (PDM STRATEGIES) This session will discuss industry’s focus on reducing operating costs and how it has accelerated the move towards Predictive Maintenance (PdM). PdM offers significant benefits over traditional methods of run-tofailure or scheduled preventative maintenance. This strategy reduces equipment-driven downtime, increases MTBR, and eliminates emergency turnaround costs.

A successful PdM strategy requires sufficient data to make the most informed decision regarding the present condition and projected useful life of equipment. With the advent of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and wireless condition monitoring strategies, a network of intelligent sensors, machine-to-machine communication, cloud-based infrastructure, and analytical applications can now turn raw data into actionable information before escalation.

THE STORM AFTER THE STORM - COLLABORATING RESTORATION OF CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE USING FAST-TRACK METHODS In the late June of 2018, a severe storm tore through McLean County causing complete failure of The Falkirk Mine’s end-of-the-line conveyor. In this joint presentation, with perspectives provided by the engineer and owner, attendees will learn how this unexpected challenge was transformed into a success story using collaborative methods and fast-track project delivery. The discussion will characterize extreme challenges presented by the situation and reveal some of the extraordinary efforts applied by the owner, customer, engineer, contractors, and suppliers to succeed in emergency response, temporary supply line establishment, forensic investigation, and reconstruction of this crucial conveyor.

As a result, these months were among the coldest and snowiest on record. The Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) declared several maximum generation and emergency alerts due to elevated consumer load, volatile natural gas, transmission constraints, forced outages, and intermittent renewable energy generation.

Great River Energy’s response to this emergency highlights the value of a diversified generation portfolio that includes available, dispatchable, and reliable generation assets.

ENVIRONMENTAL GEOLOGICAL MODELING AND SIMULATION WORKFLOW TO ESTIMATE CO2 STORAGE POTENTIAL Introduction to geology in ND and the potential for CO2 storage. The presenter will review some of the tools and practices used by geologists and reservoir engineers to evaluate geologic suitability for long-term CO2 storage.

An overview of geologic model development is provided to explain key data requirements needed to advance a project. Description of CO2 injection simulations that may be run based on a geologic model to assess storage potential and predict performance under multiple scenarios.

This session will describe the NDIC application and permitting process for Class VI wells. Information and data necessary to create a complete application will be explained along with the approval process and estimated timelines for required regulatory reviews.

OPERATIONS BOILER WATER TREATMENT AND CONDENSATE POLISHING USING HYDROOPTIC UV DECHLORINATION For more than five years the Hydro-Optic™ UV water treatment technology has provided Plants with nonchemical dechlorination of reverse osmosis (RO) feed water. The technology has helped the facility to substantially minimize the use of sodium metabisulfite (SMBS) and reduce maintenance and associated costs; as well as extend RO membrane life and minimize micron filter replacement.
