Homesteading in the Dakotas

Join Perry on a journey back in time to the early days of North Dakota, where we will explore the lives of the first settlers who pursued the dream of owning free land under the Homestead Act of 1862. However, this was not an ordinary land grab, as the pioneers faced numerous challenges. We will uncover the story of the Sod House, a surprising but ingenious solution these intrepid settlers used to build their first homes on the treeless plains. Come along with us on this journey as we discover the grit, resilience, and resourcefulness of these early North Dakotans! No membership is required.

James Baldwin: Speaking to US at 100

American writer James Baldwin (1924-1987) may be best known as an activist and essayist, but he was also a groundbreaking writer of novels and short stories. While he was born 100 years ago, his voice sounds fresh, urgent, and relevant to our evolving understanding of what it means to be American. We will read two of Baldwin’s novels, Go Tell It on the Mountain and Giovanni’s Room, in which he explores race, religion, and sexuality. Participants should be willing to read and engage with complex texts addressing challenging subjects.
