CHAIR’S CORNER As a business leader, seeing the caliber of individuals recognized through this program gives me tremendous confidence in where our community is headed. These young professionals are not waiting for opportunities to lead. They are stepping forward, creating solutions, strengthening organizations, volunteering their time and helping move our region forward. MITCHELL BETTENHAUSEN, 30 Project Manager/Operations Manager

ALLETE CLEAN ENERGY

My drive and ambition were shaped early in life by my late mother, who was an innovator, researcher, author and someone truly ahead of her time. After her passing, I was raised with the support of my aunt and uncle. Growing up in rural North Dakota and spending significant time with my entrepreneurial grandparents, I developed a strong work ethic and deep appreciation for perseverance, responsibility and resilience.

When I began my career in the energy industry, I committed myself to excellence in every role I take on. That commitment has led me to where I am today, helping deliver large-scale energy infrastructure projects that have meaningful impact on the region and its future.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

In my career, I am motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact through energy infrastructure and longterm growth. I take pride in helping deliver projects that not only meet energy demands but also create lasting value for communities through economic development and investment.

In the community, I am motivated by the chance to give back and help create opportunities for others. Whether it is supporting future energy professionals through Bismarck State College, serving on the Glen Ullin School Board or contributing through volunteer efforts, I want to help build strong communities and support the next generation of leaders.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

This community is built on strong relationships, and some of the greatest opportunities come from the connections you build along the way. Invest in meaningful relationships with mentors, business leaders and community members, because those relationships often open doors, create partnerships and provide support when you need it most.

I would also encourage young professionals to get involved beyond their day-to-day job. Join a board, volunteer, support local organizations and find ways to contribute your skills back to the community. When you show up, stay engaged and give back, people notice.

Most importantly, do not be afraid to take on responsibility early. Growth often comes from stepping into challenges before you feel completely ready. If you stay humble, keep learning and remain committed to doing things the right way, you can build a career that not only creates success for yourself, but also leaves a lasting positive impact on the community.

IF YOU COULD INSTANTLY SOLVE ONE ISSUE FACING BISMARCK-MANDAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

If I could instantly solve one issue facing Bismarck-Mandan, it would be the housing shortage and affordability challenge.

Creating more attainable housing opportunities for individuals and families who want to live and stay here would have a lasting impact on the future of our community.

Housing is directly tied to workforce growth, economic development and quality of life. When people can afford to live in the community where they work, it strengthens families, supports local businesses and helps employers attract and retain talent. It also creates greater stability for young professionals, growing families and those who want to put down roots in the Bismarck-Mandan area.

Addressing this issue would do more than solve a short-term need, it would help position Bismarck-Mandan for long-term growth and ensure our community remains a place people are proud to call home.

I was born and raised in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, and moved to Bismarck in 2016 with my husband, Matt, to start our next chapter. My entrepreneurial journey began in 2011 when I started a bakery business from my home kitchen, which taught me the value of hard work, creativity, and building lasting relationships with customers.

In 2024, I began leading Extra Balloons, where I found another creative outlet to help make life’s biggest celebrations even more memorable. I love transforming ordinary spaces into something special and being part of the moments people will remember for years to come!

Today, I’m grateful to own and operate multiple small businesses alongside my husband. Each experience has shaped me into the leader and business owner I am today, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to serve the Bismarck community while continuing to grow both personally and professionally.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I’m motivated by making a positive impact on people’s lives. Whether it’s helping create a memorable celebration through Extra Balloons, supporting a nonprofit fundraiser, or delivering Valentine’s balloons to seniors through our Adopt a Grandparent program, I love knowing that the work I do brings joy and connection to others.

As a business owner, I also enjoy creating opportunities for my team, collaborating with other local businesses and finding new ways to strengthen the community that has supported us. Seeing people come together for a common purpose is what inspires me every day.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Don’t be afraid to start before you feel ready. Some of the best opportunities come from simply taking the first step and being willing to learn along the way. Build genuine relationships, support other local businesses and always lead with integrity.

Success isn’t just about growing your career—it’s about the impact you have on the people around you. If you stay humble, work hard and look for ways to serve your community, you’ll build something that lasts far beyond your business.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

Andrew Hershey, owner of FOMO 10/40 Creamery & Coffee, has been a tremendous inspiration to me. What I admire most is that he has never built his business around profit alone—he has built it around people and purpose.

Every decision reflects his desire to serve others, whether that’s investing in the local community, mentoring young people, supporting families or using his business to make a lasting impact around the world. FOMO’s mission is to “make every day a little better” by creating connection, inspiring the community and giving generously, and Andrew truly lives those values every day.

CARLYNN FARIS, 37 Director of Member Services

CAPITAL CREDIT UNION

I started at Capital Credit Union in 2015 as the opening teller at our Main Branch. I quickly moved into a supervisor role where I focused on learning as much as I could so I could support my team and continue growing as a leader.

In 2017, I pursued an opportunity as Digital Branch Manager, which included supervising our Contact Center. Over the next several years, that role gave me a broader understanding of the credit union, our members and the systems that support our staff. I also had the opportunity to lead several important conversion projects and other initiatives that impacted employees across the organization.

Those experiences helped me strengthen my leadership skills and prepared me for my next step. In the fall of 2021, I began overseeing our training department while continuing to supervise the Contact Center.

In June 2023, I was promoted to my current role as Director of Member Services.

Today, I oversee our teller staff across all markets, our Employee Development training department and the Contact Center.

Much of my role is focused on coaching and supporting supervisors so they can help their teams succeed, serve members well and work as efficiently as possible.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I am motivated by the opportunity to create something that lasts. Whether it's developing future leaders, building community partnerships or launching new programs, my goal is to create opportunities that continue to make an impact long after I am gone.

I am passionate about empowering others to succeed and helping employees discover ways to grow as leaders within our organization and our community. At the same time, I recognize that staying relevant requires a willingness to adapt, learn and embrace change. For me, success isn't measured by individual accomplishments. It's measured by the people, programs and partnerships that continue to thrive because of the foundation that was built.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My advice to other young professionals in the Bismarck-Mandan community is to find an organization whose values align with your own. One day you'll be walking through those front doors for the first time, and before you know it, you'll be celebrating a milestone work-anniversary! Staying true to who you are and what matters most to you will make that journey far more meaningful.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

One person who inspires me is Brenda Nagel, President and CEO of the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC. I had the opportunity to hear Brenda share her leadership journey through Capital Credit Union's She Leads program, and I was struck by her self-awareness and courage in walking away from a successful career that was no longer fulfilling and pursuing a new path.

Her story also resonated with me as a working mom. Building a career often comes with sacrifices, and I appreciated her honesty about the challenges of balancing professional ambitions with family life. Beyond her accomplishments, I admire her commitment to developing others and strengthening our community.

Brenda's leadership reminds me that success isn't just about what you achieve personally, but how you invest in people and create opportunities for others to grow.

ASHTON HAUFF, 33 Co-Founder & CEO

THE GOOD KIDS I grew up in Bismarck as the daughter of a fine artist and a software engineer, which meant I grew up at the intersection of two very different ways of thinking: one taught me to see beauty, the other taught me to solve problems. I didn’t know it at the time, but that combination would end up defining my entire career.

Today, I lead strategy and storytelling at The Good Kids, helping organizations uncover what makes them genuinely magnetic and guiding our team to build brands that connect with heart and execute with precision. My roots are still in community through local business and creative circles, and through the belief that a rising tide lifts all.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I’m naturally driven to push things toward their highest potential, whether that’s a person, an event or a project. I’ve come to believe the real magic lies in high performance alongside giving back in some form. I’ve experienced that combination enough times that it’s become almost addictive, and it’s where my attention naturally gravitates.

Now, with two toddlers at home, I have an added layer of motivation: making sure the work I put into this community becomes a legacy they can benefit from, not just something that existed before them.

More than anything, I want to prove that world-class creative talent can build a career here, in Bismarck-Mandan, without having to leave for bigger cities to find better opportunities. It may take more work to build that reality, but I believe it’s possible. No one should have to choose between their family and their career, and I want our community to be proof they don’t have to.

WHAT’S A CHALLENGE YOU’VE FACED ON YOUR CAREER PATH, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT?

Over the last seven years, we’ve faced more business challenges than I ever anticipated: having to let an employee go, navigating a legal matter, and working through a deeply strained client relationship near the end of a project. We also started this business during the pandemic, when the entire world was in limbo. Now, we’re adapting to a new challenge altogether: learning how to use AI thoughtfully in our industry. All that to say, business is not for the faint of heart, and it’s far from the glossy, polished version that social media often puts on a pedestal.

Through each of these situations, I’ve had to learn how to separate my personal identity from the outcome of the moment.

Sometimes you can do everything within your control and things can still go sideways. In those chaotic stretches, I’ve learned just how invaluable community connections and prior relationships truly are.

When we had to let an employee go, a business coach walked us through it. When we navigated a legal matter, a LinkedIn connection turned into guidance right when we needed it most. When we found ourselves in a difficult client situation, the Women’s Business Center connected us with someone who could advocate on our behalf. And through it all, my personal faith gave me hope that things would resolve, while my family gave me joy and support in the moments that felt hardest.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

My best piece of advice, especially for young professionals, is to give yourself permission to test and experiment with your ideas before going all-in. As someone who is wired for big ideas and fast action, it’s tempting to commit fully the moment you believe in something. But even the right idea at the right time needs a string of small adjustments and course corrections before it’s truly ready.

It’s far better to explore an interest or test an idea with a small group first, learning what works and what doesn’t on a small scale, before fully committing to your next venture. Give the idea room to evolve before you bet everything on it.

SISTER MARENA HOOGLAND, 30 Math Instructor

LIGHT OF CHRIST CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

I grew up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin. It was there that I first learned lessons in personal accountability, collaboration with others and working until the job is done.

After earning my associate’s degree, I took some time to work and decide what area I would want to study for a bachelor’s degree. It was during this period of life that I was introduced to the concept of long-term volunteer programs and came across a program with the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery in Bismarck, ND. I arrived in North Dakota with intentions of staying for just six months before returning to Wisconsin to continue my pursuit of higher education. However, during those six months at Annunciation Monastery, I discerned a call to join the community as a religious sister.

Upon the profession of vows with the community, I returned to school at the University of Mary to complete my studies with a degree in mathematics education. I began my teaching career with Light of Christ Catholic Schools at St. Mary’s Academy as the 7th Grade Math Instructor, and I will begin my fifth year with the school with the start of the 2026-2027 school year.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

The students I teach are a continuous source of motivation. It is such a gift to be a part of their lives, even for a short time, and to be invited into their joys, sorrows, successes and struggles. Growing up is a tough thing to do, and to be allowed a role in accompanying some of the next generation through their middle school years, I take that very seriously.

My students give me great hope for the future. They are strong witnesses of faith, friendship, integrity and humility. I am forever grateful for the ways they call me to be a better teacher and a better person.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Don’t be afraid to speak up when you need to. From a teacher’s perspective, I’ve found that if one person asks a question, there are usually a few others who are wondering the same thing, but someone needs to be the one with the courage to ask. From the religious perspective, we all have a piece of the Wisdom, and we each have a responsibility to share our piece with the collective whole to help one another thrive. Whether it is asking for help, sharing an insight or questioning why something is done the way it is, your voice matters. You matter.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

I’ve often said, “I want to be like Sister Agatha when I grow up.” Sister Agatha Muggli, a fellow Benedictine Sister in my community, is such a witness of servant leadership. She demonstrates what it means to lead with humility, to listen to understand and not to simply respond, and to treat every person with dignity and respect.

Her example has shaped the way I approach my own work as an educator and religious sister. She has taught me that authentic leadership means investing in people, remaining grounded in one’s values and seeking the good of the community above personal achievement. As I continue to grow in my own leadership, I hope to reflect those same qualities.

NELS LUND, 34 Project Manager/Engineer

KLJ ENGINEERING

I’ve always been fascinated by both God’s creation, and the incredible things people can build. That appreciation sparked a love for travel and inspired me to become an engineer. Since then, I’ve built a career serving airports across North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. I’ve worked with 49 different airports, and I still find great satisfaction in partnering with clients and seeing projects move from an idea to a successful reality.

Outside of engineering, I’ve pursued another longtime passion: entrepreneurship. I own and manage real estate investments, including a multifamily property in North Dakota and a vacation rental in Florida. Building a business has challenged me in new ways and strengthened my skills in leadership, finance and customer service.

Whether through engineering, business ownership, volunteer service or mentoring future engineers, I strive to make a positive impact in the communities I’m fortunate to serve.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

What motivates me in my career is simple: serving others and the satisfaction of a job well done. I enjoy helping clients, coworkers and others succeed, and there is a great sense of accomplishment that comes from knowing I have done my best and delivered quality work.

I also like to challenge myself and do new things. Sometimes doing the bare minimum is enough to get by, but I find much more fulfillment in striving to do things at a higher level. The drive to keep learning, trying new things and finding better ways to get things done is what keeps work interesting and enjoyable for me.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Get involved. Find something that you are passionate about and invest your time in it without expecting anything in return.

Some of the most rewarding opportunities and relationships come from simply showing up and serving others.

Push yourself outside of your comfort zone. It can be uncomfortable at first, but you never know what doors it may open or where those experiences may lead.

Chase your dreams and do not let fear or self-doubt hold you back. Often, our mindset is the biggest obstacle standing in our way. If there is a will, there is a way. Be willing to work hard, keep learning and stay open to new opportunities. You may be surprised by what you can accomplish.

IF YOU COULD INSTANTLY SOLVE ONE ISSUE FACING BISMARCK-MANDAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I believe mental illness is often the root cause of many other challenges, such as addiction, homelessness, abuse and other struggles people face in life. If we could make a meaningful impact in this area, I think we would see less crime, fewer people living on the streets, stronger families and better lives overall.

It is difficult to see people hurting, especially children. No one wants to see others struggling, and I believe that when people are given the support they need, they have a better chance to overcome those challenges and build a better future.

I also believe that if we all chipped in and helped each other out a little more, our community would be even stronger. Small acts of kindness, service and support can make a bigger difference than we realize.

From the beginning, I knew that if I was going to make a career out of doing hair, I wanted to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Today, I am one of the top, if not the only, stylists in North Dakota specializing in hair replacement and hair loss solutions.

My journey into hair restoration began with my own experience. After getting very sick with COVID, my hair began thinning rapidly. I had been in the hair industry for nearly 10 years and had extensive experience with hair extensions. However, I quickly realized that traditional extensions only provided volume and length to the sides and back of the head, not the top where thinning was most noticeable. I was determined

In 2022, I traveled to Los Angeles to attend an intensive training course where I was introduced to a new method of restoring fullness and coverage to the top of the head for clients experiencing hair loss.

Four years later, I continue to help women regain not only their hair, but also their confidence. My goal is to provide every person who sits in my chair with a safe space, compassion, reassurance and a solution that helps them feel like themselves again.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

Seeing women leave my chair with more confidence than what they came in with motivates me to continue in my career to make an impact on others in the community.

WHAT’S A CHALLENGE YOU’VE FACED ON YOUR CAREER PATH, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT?

My biggest challenge in my career path has been stepping outside of my comfort zone. Instead of focusing on the basic education that cosmetology school brought, I sought out more. It has become very challenging, but very rewarding. I pushed myself to different limitations and it has taught me so much resilience.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

NEVER stop learning! Always further your education. If you feel the need for change in the community, don’t be afraid to pursue it. Being from North Dakota, we often must seek skill sets from around the U.S. Keep up with the trends! And if you fall, make sure you get up, dust off and start over. Lean on other leaders in the community. If you don’t have the answer, someone will. Use your resources wisely.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

I have many influencers in the Bismarck-Mandan community. Being I work with 98% women I engage in so many conversations with so many very intelligent people in all different career paths – from politicians to business owners to nonprofit organization leaders. However, my boss Kristen Chorne, the owner of Gratitude Spa & Salon, inspires me the most.

I watch her continuously grow her own business while helping others in the community. Her focus is to always make an impact in people’s lives who are struggling.

MICHAEL MART, 37 Public Works Utility Operations Director

CITY OF BISMARCK

After graduating from North Dakota State University with a degree in Construction Engineering, I began my career with the City of Bismarck Engineering Department in 2012 as an engineering field technician taking asphalt tickets, measuring concrete and tracking quantities.

In 2013, I transitioned into a project engineering role where I oversaw the city’s pavement management program. In this capacity, I led roadway design efforts and guided long‑range planning for repair and maintenance projects across Bismarck.

In 2020, I was promoted to Senior Project Engineer taking on the city’s more complex and high‑profile infrastructure projects such as the 43rd Ave Reconstruction Project.

Four years later, I transitioned into utility operations, working closely with the Water Treatment Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant on major improvement initiatives using the CMAR process.

In 2025, I became the Director of Utility Operations, overseeing critical systems and continuing to shape the future of Bismarck’s public infrastructure.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I love the opportunity to serve the City of Bismarck and make a meaningful impact on the lives of the people who live and work here. Every time I drive through the community, I’m reminded that the projects I help lead touch every home and every business.

Water and sewer services are often taken for granted because they work so seamlessly. Knowing that my work helps ensure these essential services remain reliable gives me a deep sense of pride and purpose. I feel connected to every corner of the city, and that connection drives me to keep improving the systems that support our community every day.

WHAT’S A CHALLENGE YOU’VE FACED ON YOUR CAREER PATH, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT?

One of the defining challenges in my career has been the willingness to step outside my area of expertise. Transitioning from roads and streets into the world of water and sewer was a significant risk, and it pushed me far beyond the comfort of what I already knew.

Moving into a true leadership role requires you to rethink how you communicate, support and guide others. I’ve learned that patience is essential, listening must be intentional and trust needs to be built and extended every day.

Transitions take time, openness and consistent feedback. Ask your team to be patient with you as you grow together and encourage them to share their thoughts honestly so the team can improve.

Growing up in New Rockford, North Dakota, taught me the value of strong, connected communities. When I moved to Bismarck to attend the University of Mary, I knew that same sense of community wouldn’t happen on its own. I intentionally sought out organizations that value people and are committed to meaningful, community-driven work, allowing me to build lasting relationships while giving back to the place I now call home.

I’ve also been incredibly fortunate to have remarkable mentors who invested in me, saw potential I didn’t always see in myself and trusted me with opportunities that stretched and shaped my leadership. Their examples have inspired me to lead with the same mindset – invest in people, create opportunities for others to grow and build teams where people can thrive.

Today, I have the privilege of helping lead statewide initiatives that support business growth, community development and economic opportunity. My hope is that the work I do, and the people I invest in, help create stronger communities and inspire others to lead with the same commitment to collaboration, service and people.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I’m motivated by building something that lasts. Projects end, but strong organizations, partnerships, leaders and communities continue creating opportunities long after the work is finished. Say yes to challenges and opportunities before you feel completely ready. Some of the best opportunities came because mentors encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone, volunteer, ask questions and take on challenges that stretched my abilities.

Find the leaders and organizations that bring out the best in you – those who challenge you, invest in your growth and see your potential even before you do.

Invest in relationships, be curious, follow through on your commitments, and remember that your reputation is built over years through small, consistent actions.

IF YOU COULD INSTANTLY SOLVE ONE ISSUE FACING BISMARCK-MANDAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I would dramatically increase the number of development-ready sites in the Bismarck-Mandan region.

Economic opportunities often move at the speed of business. When companies are ready to invest, communities need sites that are prepared with infrastructure, utilities, transportation access and clear development pathways. Without them, opportunities can be lost before conversations even begin.

Expanding our inventory of development-ready sites would strengthen our ability to attract new employers, support the growth of existing businesses, diversify our economy and create high-quality jobs. It’s an investment that benefits not only today’s businesses but future generations by positioning Bismarck-Mandan for long-term, sustainable growth.

CAPITAL CREDIT UNION I recently celebrated my 11-year anniversary at Capital Credit Union.

Banking was never part of my original career plan, however. I started as a part-time teller while studying to become a marriage counselor. A friend encouraged me to apply for a teller position and that opportunity ended up changing the course of my career.

During college, I worked my way up from teller to Consumer Loan Manager and before I knew it, I had found my place. It turns out banking was my true calling.

While banking and counseling are very different professions, they share a common purpose: helping people. My passion has always been supporting others and helping them achieve their goals and I’m grateful that I get to do that every day.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

Making a positive impact motivates me in both my career and my involvement in the community. If I can make a difference in even one person’s day, I consider that a success.

Whether it’s as simple as making someone laugh or something more meaningful like volunteering my time to support my community, I find purpose in helping others. Seeing people succeed and knowing I may have played even a small part in their journey inspires me to continue giving my best every day.

I grew up with an interest in how things are built and how infrastructure impacts everyday life, which led me to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of North Dakota. I started my career as an intern with KLJ and joined the company full time after graduating in 2015.

Over the last decade, I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects across North Dakota that improve communities and create places where people can live, learn and gather.

Today, I serve as a Team Leader at KLJ, where I enjoy leading projects, mentoring younger engineers and helping clients bring ideas to life.

Outside of engineering, I’ve proudly served in the North Dakota Army National Guard since 2009, which has helped shape my leadership style and commitment to service.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I’m motivated by the opportunity to make a positive impact, whether that’s through a project that improves a community or by helping someone grow in their career.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing the responsibilities of my engineering career, military service and family life.

Get involved and don’t be afraid to raise your hand for opportunities. One of the things I’m most proud of is earning the trust of both our employees and our leadership team. Whether it’s helping an employee work through a problem, implementing a new system, or making sure things continue running smoothly when our owner is away, I enjoy being someone others can count on.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN BISMARCK-MANDAN?

Don’t let your current title define your potential. Some of the best opportunities in my career came because I was willing to step outside of my job description, take on new challenges and continue learning.

Ask questions. Volunteer for projects that stretch you. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, because that’s often where the biggest growth happens. Every experience teaches you something if you’re willing to learn from it.

I’d also encourage young professionals to build relationships. Your reputation matters. Be someone people can trust, who follows through, and others enjoy working with. Skills can be taught, but integrity, dependability and a positive attitude are what people remember.

Finally, don’t underestimate yourself. Sometimes all it takes is one person believing in you to change the direction of your career. Until that opportunity comes, keep preparing yourself so you’re ready when it does.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

The person who inspires me most is my mom. She raised me as a single mother and showed me what hard work, resilience, and determination really look like. As I’ve grown in my own career, I’ve realized how much of my work ethic came from her.

I have spent the last 17 years with Sanford Health, growing from a phlebotomist to my current role as Director of Orthopedics, Neurology, Stroke, Total Joint, and Pain Clinic services. WHAT’S A CHALLENGE YOU’VE FACED ON YOUR CAREER PATH, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT?

One of the biggest challenges in my career was finding my purpose and developing confidence in who I wanted to be as a leader. I discovered that leadership is not about having all the answers. It’s about listening, building trust, developing others and creating a shared vision. As I gained confidence in my leadership style, I became more comfortable leading through change, navigating challenges and helping teams achieve goals together.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Take chances, think bigger than you think you can and make time to reflect on your experiences. Growth often comes from stepping outside of your comfort zone and saying “yes” to opportunities that may feel challenging or even a little intimidating.

Understand that mistakes and failures are part of the journey. Some of the most valuable lessons in my career have come from challenges and setbacks. What matters most is how you respond.

Take the time to understand your values, your strengths and the impact you want to make. When you know who you are and where you want to go, it becomes easier to navigate difficult decisions and embrace new opportunities.

Finally, seek out mentors and build meaningful relationships. The Bismarck-Mandan community is full of people who want to help others succeed. Investing in those connections can open doors, provide perspective and help you achieve goals you never thought possible.

Fred Fridley has consistently challenged me to think bigger, bring ideas forward and have confidence in my abilities. Wendy Kopp has taught me the importance of focus, helping me refine ambitious visions into achievable goals. Mike Salwei has been an incredible mentor who believed in me, provided unwavering support, challenged me to grow, highlighted my strengths and demonstrated what adaptive leadership truly looks like. DJ Campbell has a remarkable ability to recognize strengths in others and help them leverage those strengths to reach their full potential.

While each of these leaders has influenced me in different ways, the common thread is their commitment to developing others. Their mentorship has shaped not only my career, but also the type of leader I strive to be.

FUNATIX EVENTS I came to North Dakota by way of the University of Colorado Boulder where I earned a journalism degree with a sports media focus. My career in Bismarck-Mandan started at the bottom of the ladder – as a graphic design intern with the Bismarck Larks. I fell in love with the work of bringing people together and I stayed.

I worked my way up through the Larks organization to Director of Entertainment, learning every side of the live event business – creative, operations, sponsorships – and the thousand small details that separate a good event from a great one.

Today I serve as General Manager of Funatix Events, a Bismarck-based live event production company that produces more than 20 events every year across North Dakota – including Mandan Rodeo Days, the Bismarck Marathon, Red White & Boom, the Williston Basin Petroleum Conference and a full summer season at the Historic Bismarck Depot.

I oversee strategy, operations, marketing and the team that makes it all happen. What gets me out of bed is the community that shows up for each other, and my job is to build the moments where that happens.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

The moment the gates open. Months of planning, spreadsheets and late nights all compress into that one moment when families walk in and the event becomes theirs. Bismarck-Mandan shows up for each other in a way I’ve never seen anywhere else and getting to build the places where that happens – a rodeo, a marathon, a festival at the Depot – never stops being motivating.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Take the internship. Take the unglamorous job. I started as a graphic design intern making promotional billboards, scoreboard graphics and every step since came from saying yes to work that was slightly bigger than I was ready for. This community rewards people who show up and do the work.

The belief that you must leave to experience something great. Too many people here – especially young people – assume the big concert, the memorable festival or the world-class experience only exists somewhere else.

After joining Interstate Bearing Systems in 2012, I began my career in inside sales, where I developed a strong foundation in customer service, product knowledge and relationship building. ANDREW STEINWAND, 29 Market President

DACOTAH BANK I was born and raised in North Dakota, spending most of my life in the BismarckMandan community. I graduated from North Dakota State University with a major in accounting and a minor in economics. Throughout college I knew I was interested in business but had no idea where that would lead me. I took an internship at the Bank of North Dakota, and the team helped me realize that banking might be a perfect fit where I could use the accounting and numbers part of my brain and couple it with genuine relationship building.

Following the internship, I became a Junior Commercial Lender and Credit Analyst at Bremer Bank in Fargo. My fiancé (now wife) was also born and raised in Bismarck, and we knew that we would like to find our way back to our hometown. A position eventually opened in Bismarck at Bremer which allowed us to move back.

After four years of commercial lending at Bremer, I was asked to be a part of the team to start a de novo branch for Dacotah Bank. The chance to build something from scratch that could have a lasting impact in the Bismarck Mandan community is truly a dream scenario as a banker with an entrepreneurial mindset. We opened the doors to Dacotah Bank in Bismarck in 2023 and I took on a leadership role as Market President in 2025.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

The driving force in everything that I do is my family. I was blessed to grow up in Bismarck with two parents who instilled in me that family comes first. With them leading by example, I experienced a wonderful childhood that resulted in a strong pride for our local community. I am motivated both professionally and through community involvement to give my children the upbringing that I experienced and pass down the pride that I have for our community.

WHAT’S A CHALLENGE YOU’VE FACED ON YOUR CAREER PATH, AND HOW DID YOU NAVIGATE IT?

The main challenge that I experienced in my career path were all the bumps and bruises that came with starting a de novo market from scratch. Most commercial lenders start at established institutions with brand recognition and a customer base already in place.

Although the opportunity to jump into something brand new came with excitement, it also came with immense challenges that forced me to rely on my existing network in the community, and to capitalize on opportunities to grow and expand my network.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Trust your gut, don’t be scared and realize that taking educated risks can pay off. If something is intriguing and exciting to you, don’t be afraid to bet on yourself and go for it. In addition, remember to ask for help and find mentors in the community along the way.

My dad was a leader in the Bismarck-Mandan community for many years and is someone who continues to inspire me. He is the reason that I believe leadership is measured by the impact you have on people, rather than the position that you hold.

He wasn’t concerned with recognition but instead was focused on doing the right thing when no one was watching and leading by example through servant leadership.

Watching the way that he handled adversity towards the end of his life only reinforced those lessons. His resilience, optimism and concern for others despite facing his own challenges continue to shape how I approach both my career and my community.

APARNA SUBRAMANIAN, 39 Network Architect

DAKOTA CARRIER NETWORK (DCN)

Growing up, I was a reserved kid who enjoyed gadgets, math, puzzles and reading.

Fast forward several years, and I found myself with a degree in computer science and mathematics with a minor in leadership studies.

I started in the industry as a network technician and later got to work with the business side of problem-solving in a sales engineering role. That role evolved into systems engineering, product development and then a chance to lead and develop a new information systems team. During this time, I continued to earn and maintain network engineering qualifications and serve on the engineering team. This track brought me the opportunity to lead DCN’s new engineering team as the network architect.

I owe so much to my mentors and leaders who came before me who trusted me and guided me through brand new challenges. I have also found that staying curious, searching for solutions and being willing to help when there is not a clear path forward have all helped me grow and understand how to contribute meaningfully.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I am motivated by curiosity and the desire to learn new things. I am also most fulfilled when I can help someone or move the needle in a positive way, whether it is something big or small. Especially in technology, what makes something meaningful is that it solves a human problem or leaves something better than it was.

I am also inspired by coaches, mentors, friends and so many who have helped me grow. I hope to be able to do that for someone else and pay that forward.

One challenge that I have had to navigate repeatedly is overcommitment. It is easy to move the items that are not important off the list. It is incredibly difficult to say no to the things I want to do and would be meaningful to do when I know it is just not the right time.

Being realistic about how much is on my plate at a given time and understanding that overpromising and underdelivering serves no one have been good reminders for me to find patience and pace myself.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN BISMARCKMANDAN?

Find something, whether it is a professional pursuit or a hobby, that keeps you curious and helps you grow. Never stop learning. Put people first. When I get off track, these are some of the guideposts that bring me back to center.

BAPTIST HEALTH & REHAB From a young age I was drawn to caring for others, a passion that was deeply influenced by my mother. She dedicated her life to serving others in caregiving roles, and through her example I learned the value of kindness, empathy and making a positive difference in someone’s life.

My career in healthcare began the first day I was old enough to work as a dietary aide in a long-term care community. It didn’t take long for me to realize I wanted to be more directly involved in resident care. I became a Certified Nursing Assistant, earned my Licensed Practical Nurse license, and later completed my Registered Nurse degree. Each role expanded my clinical knowledge, strengthened my confidence and reinforced my commitment to providing exceptional care.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN BISMARCK-MANDAN?

Stay curious, stay humble and never underestimate the impact you can have by serving others well.

My journey in healthcare has taught me that every person has a story, and every interaction matters. Take time to listen, build relationships and learn from the people around you.

I would also encourage young professionals to embrace every opportunity to grow. Each step in my own career journey taught me something valuable and shaped the leader I am today. Never underestimate the importance of where you start— every role is an opportunity to learn, contribute and make a difference.

Deanna Berg, Administrator at Baptist Health & Rehab. Her leadership, mentorship and genuine commitment to serving others have had a tremendous impact on my personal and professional growth.

One of the things I admire most about Deanna is that she has walked a similar path to the one I am on. She began her journey in nursing leadership as a Director of Nursing before stepping into the role of Administrator, and she understands the challenges, responsibilities and rewards that come with leading in healthcare. Throughout my career, I’ve discovered that my greatest fulfillment comes from developing others – whether it’s creating leadership programs, coaching employees, supporting managers or helping shape a workplace where people feel valued and empowered to succeed. Watching someone gain confidence, develop new skills or achieve a goal they’ve been working toward is very rewarding.

I also recognize that I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people who have invested in me. I’ve been fortunate to have mentors and leaders who challenged me, believed in my potential and entrusted me with opportunities to grow. Their guidance, combined with the trust and support I’ve received at Cornerstone Bank, has shaped me into the HR leader that I am today.

What motivates me most is the opportunity to serve others and continue growing as a leader. I have always believed in setting goals, learning from those around me and challenging myself to make a positive impact. I am energized to keep improving, take on new responsibilities, and use my strengths in ways that benefit others.

Whether through my career or my involvement in the community, I am motivated by the people I can support, the relationships I build and the chance to contribute to something bigger than myself. Knowing that my work can help others succeed and create a lasting difference is what keeps me inspired and committed to doing my best.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN BISMARCK-MANDAN?

Never stop learning and always stay humble. One of the greatest things you can do for yourself is to seek feedback from those around you and be open to hearing it, even when it challenges you.

We live in a world that is constantly changing, and our ability to grow depends on our willingness to learn, adapt and improve. If you stay curious, welcome new perspectives and continue investing in yourself, you will continue to unlock new opportunities and reach your full potential.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

There are many people within the Bismarck-Mandan community who inspire me – people I am fortunate to call family, friends and leaders who are making a difference every day. However, the person who comes to mind is my dad.

Throughout his life, my dad has faced challenges and adversity that have required strength, resilience and willingness to grow. He has truly worked from the bottom to the top, both personally and professionally.

What inspires me most is his ability to recognize when change is needed and have the courage to make those changes for the better. He has experienced difficult seasons and losses, but through it all, he has continued to move forward, learn and grow.

The example he has set has shaped the person and leader I try to be, and his perseverance and commitment to becoming better every day are qualities I hope to carry with me throughout my own journey.

BISMARCK LARKS I’ve taken a different route to get to where I am today. It was never my goal or aspiration to work in sports or baseball. But when I got a call in July of 2016 about moving to North Dakota to help start a summer collegiate baseball team, after originally declining, I decided to take the risk.

Ultimately, it led to me helping start something special for this community and finding my passion for creating a great fan experience each summer.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU IN YOUR CAREER OR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT?

I’ve always been drawn to working on things that have a much greater impact than myself. It started in college when I had the opportunity to start a chapter of my fraternity at Missouri State University. This started the fire inside to build things and be involved in things that will hopefully outlast me.

A strong community is such a special place to live, and I want to make sure Bismarck-Mandan is as strong as it can be.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS?

Stick with it. Nothing worth doing is easy, and it’s easy to get caught up comparing yourself to others. Disengage from social media and live life away from a screen.

There is so much opportunity in this community to lead, serve and make an impact. Don’t rely on others to do it. BismarckMandan is a great place to live and we are the ones who are going to keep it that way.

WHO’S SOMEONE IN THE BISMARCK-MANDAN COMMUNITY WHO INSPIRES YOU AND WHY?

My father-in-law, Carroll Dewing. He’s a leader who’s led the company he works for with integrity and by treating others fairly. He’s helped lead a nationwide company while still prioritizing his family and others. This isn’t easy.

Personally, he’s helped me learn about leadership, organizational structure and how to conduct myself as a leader. He’s not only done this through words, but most importantly, through action and mentorship.

IF YOU COULD INSTANTLY SOLVE ONE ISSUE FACING BISMARCK-MANDAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Better flights to get out of town. One of the biggest drawbacks to Bismarck-Mandan is the proximity to other places in the region and country. As someone not from here with family and friends across the United States, better access to flights to get out of town or better hotels and restaurants in town to host is at the top of my list. I think this is why I’m so passionate about what we do each day at the Larks.

WORKFORCE WEBINAR SERIES: RESOURCES FOR A CHANGING WORKFORCE The workforce is constantly changing and the ways employers attract, develop and retain talent are changing along with it.

To help Bismarck-Mandan businesses stay informed and connected to the resources available to them, the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC recently launched its Workforce Webinar Series. These quarterly lunch-hour webinars are designed to provide employers with timely information, practical strategies and local resources they can use within their organizations.

From finding new ways to connect with potential employees to creating experiences that encourage talent to build their careers in Bismarck-Mandan, each webinar will focus on a different piece of the workforce puzzle. The goal is to make it easier for Chamber EDC members to learn about emerging workforce opportunities and the tools available to support both talent attraction and retention.

Kicking Off the Series: Attracting Talent to BismarckMandan The first webinar, Attracting Talent to BismarckMandan, introduced employers, HR professionals and hiring managers to resources and strategies that can strengthen their recruitment efforts.

The session highlighted local workforce tools available through Job Service North Dakota and the Chamber EDC, including ways employers can utilize Make Your Mark to promote career opportunities and help prospective employees learn more about living and working in the Bismarck-Mandan region.

Participants also heard about opportunities to connect with talent beyond traditional recruitment, including job fairs, job shadows, internships, workplace tours and partnerships with local high schools, colleges and training providers.

These connections are an important part of building a strong talent pipeline. Recruitment doesn’t always begin when someone submits a job application. Giving students, emerging professionals and prospective employees opportunities to experience local careers and connect with area employers can help build awareness of the opportunities available right here in Bismarck-Mandan.

When contamination is involved, call a professional. Sewage backup situations require a prompt, controlled response because they may involve bacteria, viruses, or other contaminants that can affect employees, customers, vendors, and operations. The first step is to restrict access to the affected area, post clear warnings, and keep staff and the public away from potential exposure.

Stop asking them for straight cash.

If safe, stop the source and notify the proper internal contacts, such as management, maintenance, or property ownership. Avoid using standard janitorial tools, shop vacs, mops, or fans, as these can spread contamination.

Porous materials, flooring, walls, and contents may need specialized evaluation, cleaning, or removal, depending on what they were exposed to.

What happens to owners who overpaid during ZIRP? By: Michael Sanders The bill for cheap money arrives at refinance.

An owner who bought a 4% cap in 2020-2023 on short-term or interest only debt bet that rents would keep climbing and that the loan could be replaced on similar terms. Neither happened. Values reset when rates rose; the loan balance did not.

The result is a refinance gap.

Today’s net operating income, tested against today’s coupon and coverage requirements, supports a smaller loan than the balance coming due.

Nationally, roughly $115 billion of loans maturing through 2026 carry debt service coverage below 1.20x. The lender doesn’t care that the building is full and well run. If coverage doesn’t clear, the proceeds aren’t there.

That leaves four outcomes: cash in at closing, bridge the shortfall with mezzanine or preferred equity, negotiate an extension with a paydown, or sell into a market that knows you’re forced.

If you have a maturity inside twentyfour months, calculate your gap this quarter. Owners who arrive at the lender with the math done get better terms than those waiting on a servicer letter.

What’s your professional journey, and how did Gizmonics come to be?

Was there a defining moment that shaped your business?

We started our careers in corporate America after graduate school at the University of North Dakota (UND) and gained a lot of valuable experience prior to making the leap into entrepreneurship. Ganya kicked off our entrepreneurial journey as a consultant in Lean Six Sigma.

I followed shortly after, taking a product idea to market.

There have been a lot of moments that have shaped and re-shaped our business. Most have been the result of large-scale projects for corporations or well-funded entrepreneurs. These projects really allowed us to focus and get deeply involved in a wonderful variety of industries and challenges.

During the process of bringing that product to market, we began to attract other inventors who were looking for help with their ideas. That is when our first product development company, Widget Works, was created in Bismarck. Since then, we helped create Innovative Solutions in Bismarck.

How has Gizmonics evolved alongside the BismarckMandan community?

We sold our interest in that company in 2014 and started Gizmonics with the intention of staying small and only working on select projects, including some of our own.

We have worked hard to be involved in the many organizations and initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurs since we returned to Bismarck 20 years ago. There are so many more resources available to entrepreneurs in Bismarck-Mandan now than there were back then. We also like to support local businesses that provide materials and fabrication services beyond our inhouse capabilities.

MEMBER PROFILE What’s an exciting trend or innovation you’re seeing in your industry?

The explosion of inexpensive 3D printing technology has provided us with the opportunity to very quickly create a wider variety of prototype parts with incredible physical properties. This can be done at a tiny fraction of the cost of our first 3D printing equipment.

As with virtually all industries, AI has certainly impacted the design/engineering/product development space. We can broaden our capabilities with judiciously applied AI, particularly around programming. AI can also help with broadening thinking when brainstorming concepts in the early stages of development.

What’s your vision for Gizmonics’ future?

The breadth of projects we’ve had the opportunity to work on. These projects range from a giant piñata to body armor to simple tools to extremely high-tech projects that rival the work of universities and national research organizations. It’s different every day and never boring.

Our number of projects has intentionally been pared down, with a focus on particularly fun or technically challenging projects. We are always adjusting for the right balance of family, learning, client work, personal projects, community involvement and having great outdoor adventures.

How does technology play a role in your business today?

How do you engage with or give back to the local community?

For our more advanced projects, specialized equipment that used to be very expensive and difficult to source can now be easily purchased on Amazon or eBay for a fraction of the cost. Platforms such as Arduino or Click, with all their associated accessories and AI support, have made it easy to tackle projects that we wouldn’t have considered 10 years ago.

We are very fond of the Bismarck-Mandan community, particularly the entrepreneurial community. We have both been very involved with the organizing team for 1 Million Cups (1MC), which has put an entrepreneur on stage every Wednesday morning for the past 13 years. It’s so rewarding to see the connections that are made and the real benefits to speakers and attendees alike.

Technology has always played a big role in our business.

Most of what we create starts as a 3D CAD model. 3D CAD allows design iteration and validation before any parts are built.

Heartview Foundation has appointed health care leader Patrick Gulbranson as its new chief executive officer.

Gulbranson brings more than two decades of health care leadership experience in the FargoMoorhead region, with a background spanning nonprofit management, health insurance, and strategic partnership development. He stepped into the role on June 22, 2026, succeeding Kurt Snyder, who retired after 24 years leading the organization.

As CEO, Gulbranson will guide Heartview’s mission and strategy, advocate for clients’ access to behavioral health services, and lead the organization’s 180 employees across North Dakota.

“Patrick’s deep roots in health care in the region, combined with his proven ability to lead and grow mission-driven organizations, make him the right person to take Heartview into its next chapter,” Heartview Board President Darrell Nitschke said. “We’re grateful for everything Kurt built and we’re excited about where Patrick will take the organization.”

Most recently, Gulbranson served as vice president of provider network strategy at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, where he provided leadership and guidance to teams working to build provider relationships and improve overall health care affordability, access, quality, and experiences for BCBSND members. His background also includes 12 years as CEO of Family HealthCare, a private, nonprofit, comprehensive primary medical and dental care organization, where he directed the organization’s growth, led successful capital campaigns and fundraising efforts, and managed a team of 160 employees.

KRAUS-ANDERSON COMPLETES RENOVATIONS AND EXPANSION AT SCHEELS STORE IN BISMARCK, ND Kruas-Anderson has completed a renovation and expansion of Scheels retail sporting goods store at the Kirkwood Mall in Bismarck, ND. Designed by R.L. Engebretson Architecture, the 32,400-square-foot interior remodel includes 20709 square feet of storage and 9,734 square feet retail expansion with more space for footwear, the toy shop and boy’s and girl’s clothing.

The project also includes fire-rated wall construction and fire sprinkler upgrades. Crews worked at night on the project’s six separate phases to minimize impacts to retail operations.

Under her leadership, the doctoral program has graduated educational leaders who now serve schools, dioceses, colleges, and organizations throughout the region and across the country.

The University of Mary has appointed Dr. Brenda Tufte as dean of the Liffrig Family School of Education and Behavioral Sciences, effective Aug. 15.

She has built partnerships with Catholic schools and community organizations across the region and in Arizona. She has served four consecutive terms on the North Dakota Educational Standards and Practices Board, including as chair.

Over the past 14 years at the University of Mary, Tufte has served as a professor, chair of undergraduate education, chair of graduate education, and most recently as associate dean, bringing the steady presence of servant leadership to each role. Prior to her arrival at Mary, she was an acclaimed high school English teacher and was named the 2012 North Dakota Teacher of the Year, all while teaching education part time at both Mary and within the North Dakota University System.

“Brenda Tufte is exceptionally well prepared for this role,” said Monsignor James Shea, president of the University of Mary. “Long before joining the University of Mary, Brenda had already distinguished herself as one of North Dakota’s most respected educators. Here at Mary, she has built on that remarkable record as a gifted educator, a trusted colleague, and a faithful steward of our Catholic and Benedictine mission. Her leadership in developing our Doctor of Education program reflects her gift for forming leaders who go on to strengthen schools and communities.

Tufte says she is grateful for the opportunity to build upon the strong foundation established within the Liffrig Family School of Education and Behavioral Sciences and to continue forming graduates who are called to serve others.

The award was presented following a nomination by Staff Sgt. Michaela Granger of the North Dakota Army National Guard, who serves as coordinator of Enrollment and Partnerships in the University of Mary’s Enrollment Services department.

In her nomination, Granger praised the university’s unwavering support of her military service.

“My supervisor has always adapted to the ever-changing demands of my unit,” Granger wrote. “She has gone above and beyond what an employer is required to do to ensure that I have the flexibility to meet and exceed the expectations of National Guard duty.”

BISMARCK AIRPORT SET TO BEGIN DESIGN WORK ON TERMINAL EXPANSION The Bismarck City Commission has approved the next major step in the expansion of the Bismarck Airport terminal. At its July 28 meeting, the Commission authorized a contract with Ubl Design Group to provide architectural design, construction administration and construction observation services, launching a multi-year project designed to address record passenger growth, expand critical infrastructure and prepare the airport for the region’s future travel needs.

“The terminal expansion project is an investment in the future of our region,” says Airport Director Greg Haug.

“As central and western North Dakota continue to grow, so does travel demand. Our current terminal, which was completed in 2005, was designed to serve 240,000 annual passengers, a number we’ve exceeded in 12 of the past 14 years. This expansion will not only meet today’s needs but also create opportunities for tomorrow,” says Airport Director Greg Haug.

The $132.2 million expansion will address the airport’s most pressing needs, including additional departure lounge space, expanded concessions, improved baggage handling systems, increased TSA screening capacity and two additional passenger boarding bridges. The airport has already secured significant funding to offset design costs, including a $1 million Airport Terminal Program grant from the Federal Aviation Administration and a $4.7 million grant from the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission. Together, those grants reduce the City’s share of the design contract to approximately $4.5 million over five years.

The award recognizes innovative career and technical education programs in North Dakota that are unique, novel and advance the image and impact of career and technical education. BSC’s Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program is the first two-year applied artificial intelligence degree program in North Dakota and was developed to prepare students for a rapidly evolving workforce increasingly influenced by AI and machine learning technologies.

“This award is a tremendous recognition of the vision and work that went into creating a program designed not only for where technology is today, but for where industry is headed,” said Mari Volk, BSC dean of Current and Emerging Technologies.

Designed around BSC’s stackable approach to education, the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning AAS includes certificates in Foundations in Emerging Technologies, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Specialist, General Education and Cybersecurity. Students can earn credentials along the way as they progress toward the associate degree.

Graduates who want to continue their education can then apply their AAS toward BSC’s Bachelor of Applied Science in Intelligent Machine Learning, creating a pathway from certificates to an associate degree and ultimately a bachelor’s degree in the field.

The terminal expansion project will be completed in three phases to keep the terminal operational throughout construction with minimal impacts to passengers. With the design contract approved, work can begin immediately, positioning Phase 1 to be ready for bidding next summer following the 2027 North Dakota Legislative Session.

Alex spent last summer as an aircraft mechanic intern in both our Bismarck and Mandan shops. He gained valuable hands-on experience and got a first look at the general aviation industry. Alex recently graduated from Lake Area Technical College in Watertown, SD, in May and has successfully obtained his Airframe & Powerplant (A&P) license.

Seth brings a strong technical backSeth Fix ground shaped by mechanical engineering studies at the University of North Dakota. He has a good background in hands-on design engineering and served in the North Dakota National Guard. His experience with fabrication, diagnostics, circuitry, and systems integration will make him a valuable addition to our Avionics team. We are excited to have Seth on board and look forward to the knowledge, dedication, and fresh perspective he will bring.
