Strong communities do not happen by accident. They are built intentionally through collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment to progress. In Bismarck-Mandan, our ability to grow and adapt has always depended on how well businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders work together. When those relationships are strong, the entire region benefits.

This issue of the Connection magazine highlights the partnerships that help move our community forward. From workforce initiatives and economic development projects to nonprofit collaborations and civic leadership, success is rarely the result of a single organization acting alone.

Real impact happens when we listen to one another, align our efforts, and focus on outcomes that serve the greater good. Collaboration allows us to solve problems more effectively and create opportunities that are lasting and meaningful.

At the Chamber EDC, collaboration is more than a guiding principle. It is how the work gets done. The Chamber EDC brings together businesses of all sizes, nonprofit organizations, and public leaders to help align priorities and reduce barriers. Businesses contribute innovation, investment, and practical insight. Nonprofits offer deep understanding of community needs and trusted connections. Local leaders help create the conditions for growth by supporting smart policy and long-term planning. When these pieces are coordinated, we see stronger results for employers, workers, and families across the region.

One of the most important outcomes of collaboration is stability. When organizations work together, they build systems that support growth over time rather than chasing short term wins. That stability gives businesses confidence to invest, encourages talent to put down roots, and helps our communities plan for the future. It also ensures that progress is shared broadly and reflects the values of the people who live and work here.

As we begin 2026, I encourage every member to stay engaged and connected. The Chamber EDC creates spaces where relationships are built and ideas are exchanged, and those connections matter. Join us for the January Membership Mixer at Bartlett and West on January 8. It is a great opportunity to meet fellow members, build partnerships, and learn more about the work happening across our business and nonprofit community. I also encourage you to attend State of the Cities on February 3, where local leaders will share insights on the challenges, opportunities, and priorities shaping Bismarck-Mandan in the year ahead.

It is an honor to serve as Board Chair in 2026. I look forward to working alongside our members, staff, and partners to continue supporting the collaborations that make Bismarck-Mandan a great place to do business, live, and lead. Together, through shared purpose and coordinated effort, we can continue building a strong and resilient region for generations to come.

Every year, businesses across Bismarck-Mandan step up to support local charities and nonprofits that serve the community. Scheels represents one of many partners helping make that impact possible.

THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS:

Benefiting Business and Community

Meaningful change often begins with one person choosing to do good. Deanna Larson, program director at Bis-Man Mentor Squad, sees that firsthand as mentors build steady relationships with children facing adversity. The action is simple; the outcomes are not.

“One of the mentees asked his mentor to be his best man at his wedding. His mom brought me flowers from the wedding with a heartfelt card saying, ‘You don’t know what kind of impact you’ve had in our life and our family,’” Larson said. It’s a relationship built on presence, patience, and consistency, and one that will improve a life long past the official mentorship.

Through the Bis-Man Mentor Squad, community members invest their time in local youth, forming relationships that support growth, confidence, and long-term success.

Across the capital city region, nonprofits rely on that same steady support. Individual volunteers make a difference, but the impact grows when businesses partner longterm. These partnerships combine people and resources, creating a ripple effect that strengthens quality of life and moves the community forward in ways that no one organization can achieve alone.

GIVING HEARTS DAY: A LAUNCHPAD FOR CONNECTION Getting involved can feel overwhelming for many businesses. With so many options—volunteering, donating, matching gifts, or providing supplies—it can be hard to know where to begin. Giving Hearts Day is one program that makes those decisions easier and helps spark strong, lasting partnerships.

Each year on the second Thursday in February, individuals and companies in North Dakota and northwest Minnesota come together with a shared purpose: to build a stronger region through a full day of giving. More than 600 charities take part, offering chances to volunteer, match donations, and support needs across the region.

Dream Center Bismarck also sees the difference those partnerships make. The nonprofit focuses on feeding individuals who are homeless or close to homelessness.

Denise Fettig-Loftesnes, development director, explained their mission: “We have our statement: help for today, help for tomorrow.

Giving that meal, that’s the help for today. When you’re able to eat, you’re able to think and move forward. The help for tomorrow are the organizations that we’re able to partner with.”

Giving Hearts Day helps nonprofits create connections with the businesses ready to support them. The Dream Center partnered with groups including Scheels, which helped them sell holiday cards created by the people they serve, and The Hair Academy, which offered free haircuts.

These efforts show how simple ideas can become powerful support through partnership.

Last year alone Giving Hearts Day raised over $31 million, along with thousands of volunteer hours and donated goods. Find charities to support this Giving Hearts Day at app.givingheartsday.org/

In Bismarck-Mandan-Lincoln, Giving Hearts Day is celebrated with an event at The 701 Venue. It gives nonprofits the opportunity to host booths and share their missions with business leaders, helping close the gap between organizations and the people who can support them.

“When Giving Hearts Day brought all of those efforts together into one fun, meaningful event, we knew we wanted to be part of it,” said Jessica CottinghamHardy, chief operating officer of Cottingham Insurance Agency.

The company has supported the day for years, including matching donations for the Heartview Foundation for the past two years.

Giving Hearts Day is a single day focused on amplifying local charities and making it easy for individuals and businesses to give back.

Giving Hearts Day also sparks new ideas for meaningful giving. “It’s such a meaningful way to connect businesses with causes that matter in our community,” said TriEnergy Cooperative Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Barth. The organization’s mission encouraged TriEnergy to expand its nonprofit involvement and start their Gallons of Gratitude initiative, which donates one cent for every gallon of fuel sold at their stations throughout the year to support local teachers.

Diedre Hillman, owner of 13th Hat Business and Events Strategy, works closely with the Giving Hearts Day team and sees its potential daily. “Giving Hearts Day is an awesome launchpad to get your employees and potentially customers involved,” she said. This spirit of partnership strengthens the business community just as much as the community itself.

Brenda Nagel, CEO and president of the BismarckMandan Chamber EDC, said, “There’s not a business in Bismarck or Mandan that doesn’t understand the importance of the work that nonprofits do. The more the business community continues to act as an advocate, the more they can engage their employees to give back, which builds a stronger community.”

LOCAL IMPACT: REAL STORIES FROM BISMARCK-MANDAN-LINCOLN The effect of strong partnerships in Bismarck-MandanLincoln is felt every day. These efforts do more than meet basic needs. They shape futures, open doors, and create lasting change for people across the region.

At the Dream Center, partnerships make their work possible. “We had 120 programs last year that we’re able to offer that come through the partners that we have in the community,” said Fettig-Loftesnes.

Each program brings hope to someone facing hunger, hardship, or a major turning point. They serve about 800 meals a day and host regular events that could not be completed without the support of their partners.

Just a few of their offerings include Adopt A Block food deliveries, A Community Christmas with live music and donated gifts, and monthly block parties that help meet everyday needs.

Their back-to-school night in August gave kids the supplies they needed for a successful year, provided through partnerships with businesses including Gate City Bank and Centerspace. None of this would happen without the local businesses that support their mission.

These connections create a network of support that reaches across the community. Jim Barnhardt, founder and executive director of the Dream Center, sees firsthand how different channels help those partnerships grow.

“The Chamber EDC is so important to the business community, making those connections, and it’s all trickled down from there,” he said. Those connections help nonprofits serve more people and help businesses live out their values in visible, hands-on ways. It creates a cycle of giving that builds stronger schools, safer neighborhoods, better businesses, and more connected people.

That truth is clear at the Dream Center. The stories behind each meal show how much hope simple care can bring.

After losing his home in a fire, one community member, Charles, was connected with the American Red Cross and Dacotah Foundation for safe housing. He later shared, “Just knowing I have a hot meal to go to gave me the hope I needed to continue.”

These moments show why partnerships matter. They bring people together, fill real needs, and create a stronger foundation for the entire region. Each story is a reminder that even small acts of support can lead to life-changing results.

THE BUSINESS CASE FOR GIVING BACK Giving back strengthens the entire community, and it strengthens the businesses that choose to get involved.

Many organizations find that service brings teams closer and builds a workplace culture people want to be part of.

Cottingham-Hardy has seen this firsthand.

“We have been thanked by employees often for supporting local causes. It has resulted in stronger relationships both within our agency and with the communities we serve.”

Volunteering together as a business increases employee engagement and loyalty. It also creates a more positive work environment that encourages collaboration and

connection among team members, which brings about better work for the business and a stronger overall community.

Nagel said, “We talk a lot about the workforce and the lack of workforce. If we can involve our people in giving back, it builds a positive culture in the workforce and ultimately helps retain employees.”

Larson from Bis-Man Mentor Squad shared how investing time in giving back strengthens a community with a story of a student who could have faced major barriers without early support. With guidance, he found confidence and direction, even learning how to work on cars with his mentor.

“Kids that are successful benefit their whole family and that ripples out to our community. Now he’s got a job as a mechanic. So now he’s got a skill that he can fall back on and he’s still in high school,” she said. That’s one more person supporting themselves and supporting the Bismarck-Mandan-Lincoln workforce.

Nonprofits that help people meet basic needs make it possible for them to stay active and engaged in the community. “So many things start with the food,” said Barnhardt. “If we’re hungry, we can’t think, we can’t do anything. So it’s really about bringing people in with the food and then getting them involved with the services.”

Partnerships make the work nonprofits do possible. Local banks provide budgeting classes at the Dream Center to reduce evictions and repossessions. Donation matches on Giving Hearts Day support charities with many different causes. Goods donations feed students at local colleges so they can save and afford books and tools. That support helps young people graduate, find work, and build skills that strengthen the regional workforce.

Melissa Neutman, public outreach lead at Scheels, believes meaningful giving is more than goodwill; it plays an essential role in strengthening the community.

“Giving back isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s an investment in the community that supports your business. When local businesses partner with nonprofits, everyone benefits. You build stronger relationships, boost employee morale, and create a sense of purpose that goes beyond profit.”

This shared work creates a stronger community where opportunities grow and businesses thrive. There are countless ways to join that momentum, each with the potential to make a real difference.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED Each of those opportunities starts with a business taking the first step toward creating a stronger BismarckMandan-Lincoln. “I think employers need to kind of role model a spirit of service in the workplace,” said Larson. That work often begins inside a business long before any partnership forms. A culture that values service encourages employees to look for ways to support the community, and it opens the door to meaningful collaboration.

That first step does not have to be complicated. “Start by finding causes that align with your company’s values and encourage your team to get involved. Even small efforts; volunteering time, donating resources, or sharing expertise; can make a lasting impact,” said Neutman.

Skills are often one of the most valuable contributions.

Barnhardt said, “Businesses ask how they can help, and we always say start with what you have. Your time, your skills, your connections. Those are just as valuable as financial donations.”

Across the region, companies are finding simple, practical ways to give back. Fabricators Unlimited made blankets for the 31:8 Project. Costco and Cash Wise donate produce nearing its “best by” date so it can be used by local food programs. Starion Bank sponsored Giving Hearts Day’s night at the Holiday Lights on Main, offering nonprofits a welcoming space to meet and engage with community members.

Kelli Thompson, sales and showroom manager at Fabricators Unlimited, was surprised at how simple and impactful it was to get involved.

“There are so many great local charities that have some pretty simple and easy asks that we could help with,” she said. Each effort, large or small, strengthens the community and brings new purpose into the workplace.

IMPACT THAT CARRIES THE COMMUNITY FORWARD Strong partnerships begin with simple acts of care. A meal served, a few minutes spent listening, or a skill shared can change the course of someone’s day or even their entire life. The nonprofits across Bismarck-Mandan-Lincoln see these moments every day, and the businesses that stand beside them help make those moments possible. Their combined efforts show how small steps can create meaningful change.

Anytime you do something that helps others, it pays back in ways you can’t always measure. Start small if you need to, but start.”

Hillman said, “Whether you have a call to support animals, veterans, children and youth, or sports education, whatever it is, you can find a way to give through Giving Hearts Day.” Ways to get involved include: • Explore the nonprofit directory and connect with an organization that aligns with company values.

• Become a Giving Hearts Day Business and help promote the event, host a goods drive, match donations, or volunteer as a team.

• Purchase Giving Hearts Day gift cards and invite employees to contribute to the causes they choose.

Fettig-Loftesnes at the Dream Center expressed how helpful Giving Hearts Day has been, through resources and partnership opportunities. She said, “If you’re a business that truly wants to give to the community, you’ve got to get signed up with Giving Heart Day.”

MATT SAGASER COMPLETE’S FINAL TERM ON CHAMBER EDC BOARD OF DIRECTORS Past Chair Matt Sagaser is completing his term on the BismarckMandan Chamber EDC Executive Committee. Matt’s journey began when he joined the Bismarck-Mandan Development Association (BMDA) to help influence economic development. From the beginning he said, “My invested interest was always to benefit the business,” and that’s what drew him to gaining a leadership position. After the BMDA and the Chamber merged, he was invited to the Executive Committee, progressing through its roles before serving as Chair in 2024 and outgoing Chair in 2025. What started as a desire to have a stronger voice and more influence, evolved into a commitment to collaboration, economic growth, and Moving Business Forward in Bismarck-Mandan.

After spending many years in leadership roles for both the BMDA and the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC, Sagaser shares he is proud to have helped on the first strategic plan that created the Chamber EDC’s mission of “Moving Business Forward,” as well as directing the creation of the new Strategic Plan 2026-2030. As someone who was heavily involved in the Northern Plains Commerce Center, Matt is proud of the economic development successes that have taken shape during his service, especially the next steps to begin development of new industrial park space.

Another proud accomplishment from his time on the Executive Committee was being a part of the leadership team that hired current CEO and President Brenda Nagel.

He believes this was a prominent decision, as Brenda has significantly influenced the Chamber EDC’s growth and continues to have a positive impact on the organization.

Reflecting on his service, Matt explains that getting involved means gaining a voice. “Collaboration becomes possible when you work with other businesses, and that collaboration becomes a reality at the Chamber EDC,” he says, noting that throughout his term, he always valued Chamber EDC events as a way to connect with members and watch connections take place. His years on the board and Executive Committee allowed him to directly see the results of businesses working together.

“Being involved helped me to see all that goes in to Moving Business Forward in Bismarck-Mandan and have the ability to influence and be a part of it.”

As he steps down, Matt encourages anyone hesitant to join the Chamber EDC, either in a leadership position or simply a member, by saying, “Take a chance and be bold. Don’t be afraid to speak up. The time commitment is small, but the reward is great.” Sagaser hopes everyone chooses to be a part of the community at some level and take advantage of the Chamber EDC’s open invitation to have a voice.

MILLS PROMOTED TO EVENT MANAGER Tate Mills has been promoted to Event Manager at the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC. Mills started at the Chamber EDC in November of 2023 as Event Coordinator.

Mills has a bachelor’s degree in communications with a focus in public relations from the University of Mary.

As Event Manager, Tate will continue to plan, organize, and oversee all events put on by the Chamber EDC while taking on an expanded strategic role in shaping the future of member engagement. In this new role, Tate is committed to elevating and growing our events through innovative programming, creating the most impactful and meaningful experiences for our members while strengthening the connections that make our business community thrive.

In her free time, Tate enjoys exploring the world around her by hiking and visiting national parks with her husband and her dog.

CHAMBER EDC WELCOMES BRIDGET STILLWELL TO TEAM The Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is happy to welcome Bridget Stillwell as the Content & Communications Coordinator to the team. Originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, she first came to the region as an undergraduate student at the University of Mary before transferring to Adrian College in Michigan, where she earned her B.A. in English Studies with a minor in Business Administration. After spending a few years away, she’s thrilled to once again call Bismarck-Mandan home.

In her role, she is eager to connect with members and local businesses, contribute to the Chamber EDC’s monthly Connection magazine, and help share the stories that move our community forward. Drawn to the Chamber EDC’s commitment to building and supporting a vibrant region, she looks forward to championing that mission through thoughtful, engaging communication.

Outside of work, she enjoys getting outdoors to run, hike, and ski, as well as spending time with friends and family— especially in her role as the proud “cool auntie” to her nieces and nephews. We’re excited to have her on board and look forward to the energy and creativity she brings to the team.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP NETWORK UPDATE This fall, the Chamber EDC’s student leadership program has been connecting local students with real-world careers right here in Bismarck, giving them firsthand experience and meaningful exposure to professionals in our community. So far this year, participating sophomores and juniors have explored a wide range of fields, including banking, finance, insurance, communications, technology, architecture, and design, through engaging visits to local businesses such as Bravera, ICON, and DCN. These students, selected for their leadership potential, academic dedication, and commitment to extracurricular involvement, are gaining valuable insights that will help them make informed career decisions. Throughout the school year, they will continue visiting additional businesses across our community, learning directly from local professionals about the skills, opportunities, and pathways available to them.

Programs like this are just one way the Bismarck Mandan Chamber EDC is shaping the workforce of tomorrow.

YEAR END BISMARCK VISION FUND UPDATE The Chamber EDC helps administer the City of Bismarck Vision Fund, a powerful tool designed to support local businesses as they grow. The Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation offers fully furnished apartments to patients undergoing radiation therapy at a low rate of $20 per night for the duration of treatment. The Center currently maintains 23 apartment units and houses to accommodate patients and their families or caregivers who must travel from out of town.

Lodging units are reserved through the Cancer Center once treatment dates are scheduled and are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. All units are furnished and maintained through the generosity of community donations and volunteer support.

For patients who prefer to travel daily rather than stay overnight, the Foundation also provides transportation assistance, including gas cards, transit coupons, and taxi vouchers.

The Bismarck Cancer Center is proud to offer these services to help ease the burden of travel and lodging during cancer treatment. Please talk with a BCC staff member for more information about available lodging and transportation options.

Mold can appear in any home, often after a leak, high humidity, or moisture trapped in hidden areas. If you notice a musty odor or see visible growth, it’s important to know what to do while waiting for professional help.

If there is a leak, shut off the water source if you can do so safely. Avoid wiping, scrubbing, or bleaching mold, since these actions can release more spores and cause the contamination to spread. Also avoid using portable fans or dehumidifiers pointed toward the growth, as directed airflow can push spores into clean areas of your home.

Next, focus on preventing airflow across the mold. Staying out of the affected area helps keep spores contained. Turn off ceiling fans and avoid using the fan setting on your HVAC system. In places like North Dakota, shutting off the entire HVAC system isn’t practical in winter and can risk frozen pipes, so continue heating as needed but avoid any settings that actively circulate air through the contaminated space.

When and How to Make the Big Ask Timing and approach are everything when it comes to making a major gift ask.

The “million dollar” question is when, and how, you know it’s right to make your move. The best time is when you’ve built genuine rapport. The donor has demonstrated consistent engagement, shown deep interest in your mission, and signaled capacity through previous giving or involvement. Watch for cues like asking detailed questions, attending events, or connecting you with their network, these are indicators they’re ready for a bigger conversation.

Preparation is SUPER important. Clearly articulate the need, align your ask with the donor’s passions and values, and be specific about the impact a gift at this level will have. Frame the conversation as an invitation to take a true leadership role and shape your organization’s future. Avoid rushing into “the ask” out of necessity, patience builds trust and confidence.

Successful major gift fundraising is about presenting the right opportunity, at the right time, in the right way. When donors sense you’ve listened, understood, and prepared just for them, the big ask feels like the next logical, and inspiring, step.

How can proactive wealth planning help a business owner prepare for unexpected challenges—such as economic downturns or leadership transitions?

Proactive wealth planning as a business owner keeps you and your family ahead of surprises instead of having to react in a panic when something happens. Ensuring you have a diversified portfolio outside of your business assets can help create a plan that you can fall back on when a challenge comes up so you aren’t having to be forced into any decision. A proactive plan would include some succession planning and buysell agreements to ensure the business and its structure can continue on. To ensure your plans are proactive they should address your business growth, retirement, your lifestyle goals and an exit strategy from your business. MEMBER Profile What’s your professional journey, and how did it lead you to Cappuccino on Collins?

My professional journey didn’t really exist in a traditional sense until Cappuccino on Collins. Believe it or not, I worked in childcare and as a DSP for various agencies for about 15 years before we bought Cappuccino on Collins. I knew I’d always wanted to own a coffee shop, but I never thought it would come to fruition.

How has Cappuccino on Collins adapted to the changing landscape of Bismarck-Mandan over the years?

We are the oldest surviving coffee shop in Mandan. We are one of 7 coffee shops currently, but we have actually outlived a couple throughout our 31 years. I think it’s the legacy that keeps people coming in and new people 20

discovering us. In the beginning, there were no corporate coffee shops; it was us and Sia with Coffee Break in Bismarck. Keeping up with the quality of coffee and not over complicating things is what keeps us going.

What’s the most exciting innovation or trend you’re currently seeing in your industry?

There has been a lot of crossover between bartending and coffee. A lot of the newer trends are botanical flavors.

Shaken espresso has been popular and if you’ve never tried it, you definitely should! It adds aeration to the espresso while mixing the flavors much like when you aerate wine.

Looking ahead, what’s your vision for Cappuccino on Collin’s future?

Continuing to create community. We want to be your favorite third space where you feel comfortable to be yourself.

How does Cappuccino on Collins contribute to the local community beyond its products/services?

We offer a little free food pantry, a little free library, and display local artists monthly. We provide toys for your children to play with while you are here so that they feel included in the experience of “going to the coffee shop.”

We have donated countless gift cards and silent auction items to various charities and will continue to do so because we believe in supporting our community in small ways. You may not see our logo on a sports program but we have been helping our community on a micro level and we don’t feel like we need the recognition all of the time for that, we just want to help.

What’s one thing about Cappuccino on Collins that might surprise people?

That we are Mandan’s Original Coffee Shop! We are 31 years old, we have always been in the same spot and have always been called the same thing. The shop has always been at least 50% woman owned as well.

How is technology changing the way you do business, and what innovations are you most excited about?

We are having great business with our free delivery Friday mornings to customers in Mandan city limits. We have a couple of offices and elementary schools who order every Friday and it’s great!

CITY BEGINS PROCESS TO SECURE LOCATION FOR NEW POLICE STATION The City of Bismarck has begun the process of securing the location for its new police station, making the first of three payments over three years totaling $5 million for a 9.8acre parcel of land in northeast Bismarck.

Construction on the site located near the intersection of Century Avenue and Valley Forge Street isn’t expected to begin until 2027.

“I’m very excited to be part of designing Bismarck’s next police station,” said Bismarck Police Chief Jason Stugelmeyer. “This location will allow us to grow with the community and the size of the lot will allow the department to centralize many of our significant assets under one roof and expand our intelligence-led efforts.”

“We have been extremely fortunate to have had the financial foresight to set aside enough funds for this project,” said Finance Director Dmitriy Chernyak.

“Without that planning, and a clear vision, we may not have been able to set ourselves for success with a facility that could serve the community for the next 50 years.”

Bismarck’s current police station once housed multiple emergency response entities including the Police Department, North Dakota Patrol and Central Dakota Communications Center (CenCom). In 1989, the Bismarck Police Department employed 63 sworn officers. Today, there are 136 sworn officers and about 30 non-sworn support staff in the department.

The land for the new police station is being purchased from the current owner, Channel Properties, LLLP.

The land purchase was made possible through a strategic reallocation of reserves approved by the City Commission in 2023 as part of the 2024 budget. The building’s construction will be supported through a voter-approved sales tax initiative in November 2024, rather than solely bonding.

“By modifying our reserves policy, we were able to access funding to make this purchase possible,” said Bismarck Mayor Michael Schmitz. “This change ensured we still had three months of reserves available in the event of an emergency, while still giving us access to additional funds that would not have been available otherwise.”

A request for proposals (RFP) for architectural work will be issued to begin work on designing the new police station. The future of the current police station, located at 700 South Ninth Street, is yet undecided. One option is to repurpose it as an expanded training facility.

“Retaining our current police station for training and maintaining a police presence in south Bismarck will allow us to build a smaller facility in north Bismarck than was originally proposed,” said Bismarck City Commissioner and Police Portfolio Holder John Risch. “This will save taxpayer money while at the same time improve our ability to provide the safety and protection our citizens need and deserve.”

NORTH DAKOTA’S CHALLENGE GRANT PROGRAM CONTINUES TO IMPACT STUDENTS The North Dakota Higher Education Challenge Grant Fund continues to make a powerful impact across the state’s public colleges and universities, unlocking millions in private donations through strategic state matching funds. At a recent quarterly meeting, almost $8 million was approved for distribution among North Dakota University System institutions.

Established during the 2013–15 Legislative Session, the Challenge Grant program was designed to enhance philanthropic support for higher education by offering a 50 percent match on qualifying private gifts. Available to all 11 public institutions within the North Dakota University System, the program has helped fund scholarships, faculty development, infrastructure, and academic programs. During the 2025 legislative session, lawmakers increased Challenge Grant funding to $24.76 million for the 2025-27 biennium, an increase of 24 percent over the previous biennium.

“The Challenge Grant has been a game-changer for our institutions,” said North Dakota University System Commissioner Brent Sanford. “It empowers donors to amplify their contributions and directly support students, faculty, and innovation on campus.”

To date, the program has generated tens of millions in combined public-private investment. University of North Dakota (UND) and North Dakota State University (NDSU) have leveraged the program to raise more than $50 million each (or more than $100 million combined), supporting hundreds of scholarships and academic initiatives. All NDUS institutions combined have applied almost $200 million in private donations since the Challenge Grant Fund’s inception in 2013.

Wyatt Warkenthien received Challenge Grant funding while at NDSU where he graduated in 2024 with a degree in biotechnology and microbiology. “I co-founded Frontier Bioforge out of the opportunities I received from my support system in North Dakota. When the

state champions its students in the form of scholarships, it allows us to focus on developing ideas that can turn into North Dakota-grown companies and encourages young professionals like me to plant roots in the state,” Warkenthien said.

UND Challenge Grant scholarship recipient Ally Kujath graduated this year with a business degree. She said, “I am incredibly grateful to the alumni and friends of UND who fund scholarships for students like me. Knowing that there are individuals who believe in the power of education and are willing to invest in the future of students is truly inspiring. Having the State of North Dakota be a partner in that philanthropy shows me that the entire state is invested in my success.”

Donors can contact any NDUS institution or foundation to find out more information on how to donate. The current biennium’s funding is available until June 30, 2027, or until funds are exhausted.

SANFORD HEALTH EXPANDS ENDOSCOPY SERVICES AT SANFORD BROADWAY SAME DAY SURGERY CENTER: NOW OPEN IN DOWNTOWN BISMARCK Sanford Health has expanded its endoscopy services at the Sanford Broadway Same Day Surgery Center, located at 715 E. Broadway Ave. in downtown Bismarck. This 15,000-square-foot addition is designed to enhance access, comfort and efficiency for patients seeking essential digestive health services in a convenient outpatient setting.

The newly renovated space includes six endoscopy suites and 18 preparation and recovery rooms, along with additional procedure rooms to accommodate a growing number of patients. Enhanced access points and streamlined workflows will help reduce wait times and improve patient flow from check-in through recovery.

The expansion features state-of-the-art technology, including updated scopes and advanced imaging equipment to support both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Services offered include colonoscopy, upper endoscopy (EGD) and treatments for conditions such as GERD, IBD and colorectal cancer screening.

The American Cancer Society recommends individuals at average risk begin regular colorectal screenings at age 45, lowering the previous guideline from age 50.

Early detection is key to preventing colorectal cancer, and Sanford’s expanded endoscopy services make these screenings more accessible than ever.

This investment also supports Sanford’s growing gastroenterology team, with seven new providers joining in 2025, strengthening the ability to deliver high-quality care across the region. The dedicated GI space fosters collaboration among multiple specialties, including gastroenterology and general surgery, ensuring comprehensive care under one roof.

In his role, he led a growing staff, managed one of the company’s largest municipal clients, and helped guide business operations across the eastern region of North Dakota.

Known for his practical, relationshipdriven leadership style, Jim believes effective leadership starts with honesty, responsibility, and respect.

He takes a hands-on approach to mentorship, creating a culture where young professionals can learn by doing and grow through accountability and support.

We are pleased to announce that Lisa Chaffee has been appointed as the new leader of our Outsourced & Managed Services (OMS), effective immediately. Eide Bailly’s OMS service line has grown tremendously over the last eight years and will continue to grow and thrive under Lisa’s leadership.

Lisa began her career with Eide Bailly 30 years ago. She first started working in the audit department.

After five years working in various audit industries, Lisa transitioned to the accounting services department, performing monthly and year-end write-up work, payroll and payroll compliance, and outsourced controller services. Shortly into this role, Lisa had the opportunity to prepare tax returns, allowing her to work and collaborate with both departments for several years. This experience

evolved into a full-time position in the tax department, giving Lisa a broad operational perspective through her work in three major service lines.

Lisa served as the Tax Department Head in her office for 14 years. Her current leadership roles include serving as the Office Market Lead in Bismarck, serving on the firm’s Nonprofit Executive Committee, and serving on Eide Bailly’s Board of Directors. She is also actively engaged in local community boards, holding officer roles in three organizations.

Lisa and her husband Kurt have five children and are expecting their second grandchild in May. Lisa has been a strong advocate for women in the accounting profession, encouraging them to find their individual balance to achieve both professional and personal goals.

The Board of Directors of Easterseals Goodwill North Dakota is thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Mary Van Haneghan as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer, effective August 11, 2025.

Following a comprehensive and highly competitive national search led by Sagency, an executive search and leadership consulting firm, the search committee unanimously and enthusiastically recommended Dr. Van Haneghan to the Board of Directors. Her appointment marks an exciting new chapter for the organization.

“I am honored to build upon this legacy and lead Easterseals Goodwill North Dakota into its next chapter of impact and innovation,” said Dr. Van Haneghan.

Dr. Van Haneghan brings over two decades of experience leading local, state, and national nonprofit organizations with budgets exceeding $50 million and teams of 500+ across both centralized and remote settings.

She is known for providing steady, visionary leadership—especially during transitions following longtenured CEOs—and is recognized for her focus on operational excellence, financial stewardship, and strong community engagement.

In addition to her expertise in nonprofit leadership, Dr. Van Haneghan brings significant experience in retail operations, real

estate, and property management— key elements of Goodwill’s business model. She has successfully managed extensive thrift operations, led high-impact social enterprises, and implemented strategic business initiatives that resulted in meaningful growth and operational efficiency.

Yet Dr. Van Haneghan’s story is not just one of strategy and numbers—it is rooted in heart. She has dedicated her career to advancing equity and opportunity for underserved communities, with a focus on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), as well as veterans, military families, opportunity youth, older adults, and individuals facing barriers to employment. Her work has spanned workforce development, inclusive education, job training, and employment support programs funded at the local, state, and federal levels.

Her professional journey has included leadership roles at both The Arc and Easterseals, and she has worked across multiple regions of the U.S. in both local and national affiliate roles.

This gives her a broad perspective and deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing the Easterseals and Goodwill networks.

Dr. Van Haneghan is a nationally recognized leader and recipient of multiple honors, including the Rising Star Award and awards for Program Innovation with The Arc. She pioneered The Arc of the Capital Area’s Autism Assets @ Work program, which placed individuals with autism in internships at Dell that led to full-time corporate roles—an initiative featured in The New York Times. She also helped advance

inclusive higher education through partnerships with Think College, a national initiative supporting students with intellectual disabilities. Her leadership has driven the creation of inclusive child development centers, adult day programs, transition schools, and government-funded job training programs—all closely aligned with Easterseals Goodwill’s mission of promoting education, employment, and independence.

“Dr. Van Haneghan is a dynamic and nationally respected leader whose career is defined by measurable impact, strategic growth, and unwavering commitment to community,” said David Wald, President of the Easterseals Goodwill North Dakota Board of Directors.

“Her impressive track record— spanning decades of successful leadership across the nonprofit sector—makes her uniquely equipped to guide our organization forward. We are proud to welcome her to North Dakota and excited for the future under her leadership.”

Dr. Van Haneghan earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Buffalo, a Master’s in Adult Education and Literacy from Buffalo State College, and a Doctorate in Education from Walden University.

Her academic research has focused on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, exploring everything from institutional history to the value of post-secondary education.

She also brings strong personal and family connections to the community, and we are excited to welcome her to North Dakota!
