Matt: It really depends what your interests are and what type of day trip you are looking for. For outdoor adventure and overnight accommodations, I would recommend Cross Ranch State Park. With its beautiful forests, open prairies and vast primitive trails all located along the Missouri River, this park is paradise for the outdoor enthusiasts. It features the new Pretty Point Yurt, which is the department’s newest full service yurt with kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and loft. The Pretty Point Yurt sleeps six and is located in a great natural setting near the Missouri River and Cross Ranch Nature Preserve. Additionally, Fort Abraham Lincoln State and Cross Ranch State Parks also offer

Matt: I think being out in the natural setting that North Dakota has to offer is such a wonderful option for folks living in Bismarck and Mandan. In a day’s time, you can take the boat up to Lake Sakakawea State Park or to Fort Stevenson State Park. Both offer a day of fishing and adventure on Lake Sakakawea. To the north and east are Lake Metigoshe and Grahams Island State Parks. These each provide access to Photo by Glasser Images

some of North Dakota's best lake experiences, from fishing to canoing and kayaking. If traveling west suits you better, visit Sully Creek State Park and Little Missouri State Park, both of which are in the heart of the North Dakota Badlands. For the extreme hiking and mountain biker, Sully Creek State Park connects you to the famous Maah Daah Hey Trail. Both parks also have horse accommodations for folks traveling with horses and have many great trails for horseback riding.

BM: What would be your ideal North Dakota State Parks day trip from Bismarck Mandan?

Matt: I would begin Friday evening at Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park and overnight in one of their available tepees. In the morning, I'd sip on a wonderful handcrafted latte from the coffee shop in the park. I would tour the historic sites and then head north to Cross Ranch State Park. I'd overnight in the Pretty Point Yurt if I wanted the conveniences, or spend a night in one of the other primitive yurts available if I wanted just the basics. In the morning, I would hike the Ma-ak-oti "Old Village" Trail. After the hike, I would head to Fort Stevenson State Park, walk Flicker Loop Trail along the cliffs of Lake Sakakawea and after some fabulous Pride Dairy Ice cream from the Marina Concessions, I'd head back to Bismarck-Mandan in late afternoon to be home in time for supper.

With a population of less than 100, this tiny hamlet offers countless recreational as well as historical tourism opportunities for adventurers and tourists alike. An easy trip from Bismarck – just head east on I-94 and take the Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway – Fort Ransom can be a quick getaway from the city.

Once you’ve made it, a great place to start is at the Fort Ransom State Park (FRSP). FRSP is a 950-acre natural and scenic area that pays homage to the homesteading roots of the region. At the Sunne farmstead, located in the park, you can go back in time to catch a glimpse of the life of a Norwegian homesteader circa 1885. During Sodbuster Days (always held the second full weekend in July, as well as the weekend after Labor Day) visitors can peruse displays of antique machinery, watch demonstrations of horse-drawn fieldwork, and watch as the reenactors share their farm cooking techniques.

There are almost 20 miles of trails throughout the park that lead through the Sheyenne State Forest, past North Dakota’s only waterfall, and into sprawling valleys filled with wild grasses and flowers. Each trail can be used for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and in the winter cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The park also offers kayak and canoe rentals to spend the day paddling down the river. Once you’ve had your fill of the great outdoors, head back into town for some welldeserved dinner and drinks.

The road from the park to downtown is short and beautiful. It winds past the Viking on the hill, a statue erected in 1972 that has become a staple of the community. Fort Ransom also hosts a brand-new restaurant, The Lunchbox Eatery, where locals and tourists can enjoy creative dishes such as smoked corned beef poutine and lobster mac in a laid back,

The trail is open 365 days a year to anyone who wants to explore it. The race’s sixth anniversary however, is August 5.

This year, five different race mile options are available: 100 miles, 75 miles, 50 miles, 25 miles and 13 miles. The race cap is 700 riders total for all five distances. With

The Mandan Rodeo Days 4th of July Road Race is a long-standing tradition in Mandan, North Dakota. The race itself has spanned multiple decades, had multiple race organizers, and has supported many community causes. Over the years many people and businesses have come together to support and participate in this one race on main street. This year we want to welcome our newest partner the Bismarck Magazine. Their support of this means you will be seeing a couple new faces at our race and it also gives us the opportunity to do more in the Bismarck-Mandan community.

Over the years we have come to know the returning families and friends, and we certainly enjoy meeting all the new faces. As race organizers, we pledge to continue supporting the community for years to come. This year we continue that commitment with the race proceeds supporting the wonderful works of the Bismarck Cancer Center Foundation. A

nnette Willis has been working in marketing and the travel and hospitality industry for nearly 25 years. She started giving city tours as a step-on guide for tour buses for the Bismarck-Mandan Convention and Visitors Bureau in 1998.

Annette combined her experience in marketing as a client services manager at Agency MABU with a love of hosting guests and launched Bismarck Tour Company this past September. The company evolved from a way to promote her own city tour, but after gaining overwhelming support and interest, she decided to add more independent tour guides to her company Now Bismarck Tour Company acts as the booking agent managing reservations and tour details. Each guide 36

creates their own tour based on their area of interest and they set their own schedule based on what works for them.

While each tour is created by the tour guide, one thing every tour will have in common is to make our history personal. "North Dakota and Bismarck were built by people, not by bricks. Some of their stories are funny, some sordid, and some sad - but all are fascinating" says Willis.

I was teaching at a University in Spain, and I was going to these magnificent museums, and paying ten or twelve euros to rent these old, dirty, foam headphones for their museum tour—all the while with an iPhone in my pocket. So, I started wondering how this could still be going on. Then when I came back from Spain, I was introduced to Marlo Anderson of Mandan, North Dakota—who is a tech genius. He told me about his idea for Talking Trail. We joined forces, and the rest is history.

What is Pakkage?

You say “up to $4/package—is there a pay scale?

Shawn: We offer a better way to ship packages. Basically we are to sending packages what ride-share apps like Uber and Lyft are to passengers.

Marlo: Yes. We incentivize efficient drivers with our pay scale. You start off around $2/package, and after you deliver ten packages efficiently, you get up to just under $4 per package.

How did you come up with the idea for Pakkage?

Marlo: I’m always on the road, and the interstate is always full of traffic, yet people are always asking me if I can get a package to Fargo or Jamestown, or any number of destinations. Sometimes I’m the one trying to find someone headed to where I need a package to go. So I thought, why not create a mobile app that takes advantage of people who are out on the road—so they can get paid for the driving they’re doing anyway.

How does Pakkage work?

Marlo: It’s simple. If you’re from Mandan, for example, and you’re about to hit the road to Minot, you would login to the Pakkage Mobile App, see how many packages are waiting at the Pakkage Hub to be shipped to Minot. Say there are four packages, you would stop at the Pakkage Hub in Mandan—which is the Cenex on Main Street. You probably get gas, buy a snack, and the attendant will scan the four packages out to you. Then, you just drive to Minot, and drop off the four packages at our conveniently located Pakkage Hub, which is a Cenex on Broadway.

Check your bank account, and see that you got paid up to $16 for the four packages (up to $4/package). Then you probably smile and tell a few friends to download the Pakkage app!

How does a Pakkage Driver know where the hubs are located?

Shawn: The Pakkage mobile App directs the driver to the Pick-up and Drop-off Pakkage Hubs. We typically try to make the Pakkage Hubs 24-hour convenience stores right off the interstate or highway to make it easy for everyone.

How much does it cost to send a package?

Shawn: Only ten dollars. Plus, once the app has been out for long enough, we’ll be able to collect data. Then we can let users know, for example, if they drop off a package at 2p.m., that they have a 92% chance of that package being shipped within the same day, or other similar probabilities.

How many cities/towns are utilizing Pakkage?

Shawn: We are currently alpha testing the Pakkage App in Dickinson, Mandan, Bismarck and Minot. Only users who are sent the link to download the app are able to test it out. After we work out the kinks, we’ll launch to the public, and we will be adding one city or town per week.

s summer gets closer we are all starting to plan for summer trips and changes in our routines. Along with

excitement, this can also cause some anxiety for people as they try to figure out how to make (or keep) their wellness a priority. Vacations and summer activities aren’t roadblocks; they are much needed breaks from our busy lives. Here are a few tips to take your healthier lifestyle with you.

Adventure is movement. Many vacation spots have great activities that can be a really great workout. Plan a hike, kayak trip, or city tour and you’ll be working out without even knowing it. This break from your typical gym routine is good for your body. You’ll experience a totally different side to the city you are visiting and being more active throughout the day really does add up!

Find balance to splurge less. Restricting your diet in the weeks leading up to vacation in order to look better in clothes and pictures is tempting. But once into vacation mode, your willpower and self-control will be so exhausted from weeks of restriction that you will likely splurge more than intended.

Even more important, restriction instantly slows metabolism, negatively impacting the body systems we rely on to stay healthy. With your body now in a defensive mode, splurges are much more damaging and can even make you sick - ever had that post-vacation cold?! Our everyday diet should ebb and flow with less calories one day and more calories the next based on our activity and hunger. This doesn’t change when on vacation - stay tuned into your hunger cues.
