2014-2015 CHAIRMAN I often speak about the culture of the Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network (YPN), its dedication to change, revolving leadership and constant, thriving attitude to create new events and ideas to better connect to our community. This network is not adverse to change; in fact, change was an encouragement given to the newest set of team co-leads this past year. My term as president proved no exception to the Network’s willingness to provide the opportunities its current membership asked for.

The Ambassador Team began the 1st Thursdays Social this past year, which is a way for new members to get introduced each month to other members and the different teams. The event takes place at a different location each month and corresponds with the Bismarck Downtowners’ “1st Thursday’s Downtown”, which promotes businesses in downtown Bismarck.

As the YPN welcoming committee, the Ambassador Team welcomes new members to the Network. This past year, the team helped members find their place, through several engagement events. The 1st Thursday Socials helped achieve the team’s goals by bringing existing and new members together for a casual, good time. Events provide a more intimate atmosphere for new members to mingle and really get to know other members. The event also provides casual fun and familiar faces for new members at future events. The small-group atmosphere provides the perfect platform to answer questions new members may have about the Network. The Ambassador Team also works with local businesses to help retain new employees by creating lasting relationships within the YPN and our community.

Doug Burgum, former chairman of Great Plains Software (now Microsoft of Fargo), spoke to over 80 members and partners about entrepreneurship, innovation and smart cities at Bismarck State College.

2013-2014 was an excellent year for the Entrepreneur Team (E-Team)! A large portion of the E-Team’s responsibility is to attract, and help support, the almost 35 existing partners of the Network. Following the Great Plains Young Professional Summit, there were over 10 new partners added to the Network.

In addition to the partner responsibilities, the E-Team also coordinates a few network-wide events that foster entrepreneurship.

This past year, we were fortunate enough to have Doug Burgum, former chairman and CEO of Great Plains Software (now Microsoft), present to more than 80 people for a YP Roundtable. YP Roundtable events are formatted to give young professionals in Bismarck-Mandan personal access to leaders in our business community. The event enables Network members and our sponsors to hear first-hand stories of starting a business, building a life and serving communities in North Dakota.

Another event that the E-Team coordinates throughout the year is Entrepreneurs Among Us. This is a series of events where Network members are invited to a local business for an intimate opportunity to hear directly from the president, owner, or founder on how that company came to be – what’s worked, what’s flopped and what it takes to run a business in BismarckMandan. These events are held quarterly and in the last year we have held Entreprenuers Among Us events at Organized Noise Entertainment (O.N.E. – now 701 Live), Cedric Theel Toyota, Steep Me A Cup of Tea, Blink Eyewear, and Harvest Brazilian Grill.

Responsible for actively promoting the Network, the Marketing Team can often be seen at public events. At this year’s Chamber Holiday Mixer, they set up a holiday themed photo booth and got lots of funny pictures from attendees. The event provided a lot of good exposure for the Network.

The past year has been an exceptional year for the Marketing Team – new leaders, programs and a large number of team members engaged in marketing team efforts. The team took a new emphasis to provide professional development opportunities to our team members focused on marketing and communications, with the hope they can apply new and different ideas to their individual professions.

The liaison program has allowed more members to be at the heart of the Network’s marketing efforts – creating marketing materials for specific teams and those teams’ events. The program allows team members to develop, and showcase, their marketing and design talents. We also launched the Sack Lunch Session, an event held at a team member’s workplace, in place of our monthly meeting. Here, we learn about what that member does and, on some occasions, bring in a special guest from the marketing field to provide some professional insight for our careers.

In the upcoming year, we look forward to ramping up our public image through targeted advertising campaigns and more participation in community events.

This spring, our partner KLJ hosted a PD event with Jesse Orgaard, father to an ND soldier killed in Afghanistan. He spoke on “living life by choice” to over 100 attendees.

The Professional Development (PD) Team strives to provide opportunities for career development, while allowing for personal/professional growth, networking and fun! Highlights this year included a mentor panel with three established professionals from Bismarck-Mandan who spoke on what they’ve learned over the years. That was followed by a LinkedIn training session, where participants were able to walk through the tips and tricks of LinkedIn. This year, the PD Team also continued the Rotary Club mentorship program, matching YPN members with respected local professionals. A popular webinar event we hosted this year was our December webinar on “running for elected office.” Three locally elected officials presented on the “how’s” and “why’s” behind running for office. We also again organized the Stepping Up program, where YPN members visit high school career classes to talk about their journey. Our year was capped with another successful 30-in-30 event: speed networking for young professionals!

This next year, our focus will continue to be creating engaging and intriguing professional development opportunities for young professionals throughout the Bismarck-Mandan community.

The Service Team consistently provides volunteer opportunities throughout the community, including helping prep Papa’s Pumpkin Patch each year for the fall season.

Community service is an integral part of the YPN, as it is a way that we can give back and further establish roots in the community. The active group of volunteers in the Network makes a true difference in the community. This past year, the Service Team strived to complete one service project per month and those varied from helping fill Thanksgiving baskets at Ruth Meiers Hospitality House to providing volunteers in October for a Central Dakota Humane Society fundraiser. Six times, the group brought in a speaker from a nonprofit to speak about service and give ideas for members to get active in the community on their own.

Over the past year, the Social Team has creatively found new and interesting events for Network members to enjoy one another’s company while providing the key networking components that this organization has to offer. In addition to the Network’s regular events – Cinco de Mayo, the All Hands Fall Kickoff, Halloween Pub Crawl and the Holiday Mixer – Network members instituted many new events we plan on making annual events. From skiing at Huff Hills Ski Resort, to a roller derby night with the Bis-man Bomshellz, to weekend camping trips in Medora and even a thrift-shop themed party, the Social Team constantly strives to establish innovative ways to help foster networking opportunities between our members and community. Over the next year, the team is planning to further develop relationships with business partners by hosting more 5:01 social events, allowing Network members and business partners to better network with each other. Under the new leadership of co-leads, Mallory Westby and Brent Little, the social team will continue to play a strong role in the network and strive to create a fun atmosphere in a professional environment.

The Wisdom Team is a group of local business and community leaders committed to mentoring the Bismarck-Mandan Young Professionals Network. The Wisdom Team assists in advising the Young Professionals Network on organization, direction and policy. The members of the Wisdom Team have been selected to serve as overall Young Professionals Network advisors, while also mentoring on an individual team level according to their areas of expertise. The 2013 Great Plains Young Professionals Summit in Bismarck allowed professionals from across our state to discover new ways to “Transform Tomorrow.” The summit took place May 30-June 1 with 122 registrants, 35 summit sponsors, 21 amazing breakout presenters, three phenomenal keynote speakers and one incredible view from Bismarck State College. The 2013 GPYP Summit offered a great conducive environment for networking and personal growth.

The summit kicked off Thursday evening at The Post in Mandan with a welcome from Gov. Jack Dalrymple and Sen. Heidi Heitkamp. Olympic gold medalist Stacy Dragila then took the stage to inspire attendees to take a chance on their dreams though her story of success in pioneering the women’s pole vault event at the 2000 Sidney Olympics.

Friday featured an action packed day beginning with a welcome from Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley. Jasper Schneider, director of USDA Rural Development, discussed the future for North Dakota during his ND 2.0 presentation. Kevin Iverson from the State Census Office presented the exciting opportunity population growth offers for our state after several decades of outmigration. U.S. Rep. Kevin Cramer addressed attendees over the lunch hour, which was followed by six fantastic breakout sessions. Attendees then headed downtown to the Sanford Health Ritterbush Auditorium at the UND Center for Family Medicine for a social and hoops for charity contest, which raised $400 for the Sanford Health Dakota Children’s Advocacy Center and God’s Child Project.

Keynote Speaker, Coach Dale Brown

The highlight of the evening was the keynote presentation given by legendary basketball coach Dale Brown, a native of Minot. Brown’s speech challenged attendees to tackle the four hurdles of life, ultimately defining their individual success story. The evening was capped off with a social, music and food provided by Lucky Duck’s in downtown Bismarck.

The final day of the summit featured a welcome from Mandan Mayor Arlen Van Beek followed by a day filled with 15 individual breakout sessions on various aspects of personal, professional and community development. The event culminated with a closing address from award winning speaker Craig Valentine, who outlined the steps to Getting Remarkable Results in Business and in Life.

The 2013 GPYP Summit could not have been possible without the help of our 35 sponsors. Their dedication to the young people in our state was evident by their willingness to donate the funds that made this great event happen. Also, the hard work and dedication of the GPYP steering committee and the 40-plus volunteers from the Bismarck-Mandan YP Network made this an outstanding event with a positive impact on our community.

This past year, the Young Professionals Network had some unusual members added amongst its ranks. These members often ran in circles, jumped on people’s laps, were furry and had four legs.

The YPN partnered with the Central Dakota Humane Society (CDHS); something that had never been done before in the Network’s history. This relationship allowed the Network to bring awareness to the no-kill animal shelter north of Mandan, whose mission is to provide for, house, rehabilitate and relocate lost, strayed or homeless animals.

events such as serving at Station West in Mandan, in which tips and proceeds went towards the Humane Society.

Members also helped at CDHS’s largest event, the annual Benepet fundraiser, setting up and registering attendees.

This partnership came as a result of the YPN’s strategic planning process, which has continued to push the Network to give back to our community. Over the last year, the Network provided financial and volunteer assistance wherever possible. In total, the Network raised over $4,000 for the shelter; this was largely a result of the Network’s annual Chill-N-Bowl event, where all revenues from the event, after expenses, were given to the Humane Society Throughout the year, members also contributed countless animal toys, food, cleaning supplies at YPN events. More importantly was the time that members dedicated to the Humane Society. Not only did members spent time at the shelter itself, they also volunteered at CDHS fundraisers and

The Crystal Reid Award is an annual award recognizing a YPN member who goes the extra mile in their leadership and service in the YPN and the Bismarck-Mandan community. The recipient’s tireless work to get the job done often inspires and motivates those around them.

molly sullivan KLJ, MEMBER 6 YEARS As a longtime member and former chairman, Molly is recognized this year for her continued efforts to provide guidance to the leadership team and members at large.

Molly embodies the true spirit of this award. Like Crystal Reid, people are naturally drawn to her, she rolls up her sleeves for every project and she cares about the Network and the community. Outside of the YPN, Molly dedicates her time to numerous organizations in the community. Through her inspiration and hard work, she validates that this Network truly serves a greater purpose.

Crystal Reid served as the social team co-lead, newsletter publisher, member of the service team, and vice president of the YPN before unexpectedly passing away in July 2009. In the three years that she was involved in our organization, she touched the lives of many people and made a lasting impact on the YPN.

MISSOURI SLOPE UNITED WAY TJ has shown that he is a natural leader. He wowed us all with his bold proposal to adopt the Central Dakota Humane Society as our non-profit for the year, and, with his energy and dedication, we have raised thousands of dollars for CDHS and helped the organization in a number of ways. He has continued to be forward thinking as co-lead of the Marketing Team, which has significantly grown its meeting attendance. He even organized the YPN’s volleyball team for two seasons this year. He is an exceptional innovative leader who is not afraid of taking risks.

She doesn’t need the spotlight, but trust us, if she is in the room you won’t miss her! She is content making a difference from the ground level, which is what this Network needs.

Mallory has shown herself to be an invaluable part of the Network and a member who will be key to the long-term success of the organization. She is active in the Service Team and Social Team. On the Service Team, she is almost always one of the first to sign up for any service event.

She has also reached out to other YPN partners to volunteer – including the CDHS and United Way. For the Social Team, she has taken the lead on organizing several key events, including the Thrift Shop Party.

chelsea gleich Chelsea is a young professional, wife and mother who dedicates many hours to the Marketing Team. She has filled a special role on the team as Liaison to the Entrepreneur Team, which she has taken and run with. Chelsea goes above and beyond including helping design the annual report and volunteering for marketing events. She has said, “Who joins an organization to just sit on the sidelines and do nothing?” Keep an eye on this “up and comer” in the Network.

SANFORD HEALTH Sanford Health was the first local company to sign on as a keynote sponsor for the 2013 Great Plains Young Professionals Summit. The health system’s commitment kick-started fundraising for the Summit, and that positive momentum led to a record-setting number of sponsors that resulted in a highly successful Summit. In addition, Sanford Health opened up its beautiful new Sanford Health Ritterbush Auditorium at no additional cost for the keynote address by Dale Brown, which also featured a social and fundraising basketball hoop shoot contest in the foyer of the auditorium.
