FILMING OR FUN? Da ragazzino iniziavo i miei temi con il classico alle soglie del 2000…

Ok, la cosa rende l'idea degli anni di skate che ho alle spalle, ma non è questo il punto di questo editoriale.

Se da ragazzino avessi pensato che gli anni del “famoso” 2000 fossero stati cosi frenetici e con voglia di 'gloria' da parte di tutti ,forse già allora mi sarei ritrovato la stessa 'tristezza' di questi giorni.

Ormai lo skateboarding sembra fatto di continuo filming, vuoi con un semplice cellulare, passando per una gopro o una bella telecamera.

Tutti a rincorrere il proprio trick domenicale, quel mezzo gradino in piu o la tanto attesa possibilita di sponsorizzazione.

Ma in tutto cio' il divertimento che fine ha fatto?

Che senso ha filmare un trick appena imparato e magari fatto malissimo?

Che i cellulari siano la morte dello skateboarding?

Una volta si pensava allo sponsor e come riferimento si avevano quei pochi video che vedevamo , e magari molti di loro anche datati dal tempo, ma tutto cio' spaventava perchè per davvero solo Mike Carroll sapeva essere Mike Carroll.

Ora con tutte le tempeste di video che si vedono in giro in ogni istante della giornata, in quanti pensano di non essere all'altezza?

E se lo pensate allora avete il prosciutto agli occhi!

Che davvero la voglia di fama abbia mangiato il senso del vero?

Scrivo cio', non per presunzione o superbia, ma solo per incoraggiare tutti a divertirsi, a vivere lo skate per quello che è non per quello che vi propina il web o i video patinati.

Basta scendere allo spot e pensare di filmare!

Scendi allo spot e vai a divertirti o quanto meno prova a migliorare le tue cose.

Sei forte magari in flat ma che figura ci fai se non sai neanche fare un 50-50?

I bastoni delle gopro lasciateli ai vecchietti che non possono camminare e hanno bisogno di un appoggio.

Voi imparate il senso dello stile, della semplicita e della continuita di un trick.

Ho letto tempo fa che lo skateboarding nasce come un disagio, e proprio perche' tale serve a migliorarsi non a rendersi ancora piu ridicoli.

Ciao, il mio nome è Benni e ho 33 anni. Vivo a Kassel City, nel centro della Germania. Lavoro in una società di ingegneria nel reparto pianificazione della produzione. Il lavoro non è quello che mi piace fare, ma mi porta abbastanza soldi per permettermi di viaggiare e acquistare nuove attrezzature per la fotocamera.

Hello, my name is Benni and I’m 33 years old. I live in Kassel City in the middle of Germany. I work in an engineering company in the production planning department. The job is not what I love to do but it brings me enough money to travel and buy new camera equipment.

Come è nata la tua passione per lo skateboard?

Ho iniziato a fare skateboard a 13 anni. Non sono molto bravo e così in un primo momento ho comprato una videocamera e ho cominciato a filmare i miei amici nei primi trick. Mi sono appassionato anche alla fotografia e così un giorno ho comprato una macchina fotografica e ho cercato di catturare tutti i migliori trick. Mi piace di più poter congelare il momento di vedere le immagini che scorrono. Così ho venduto la mia attrezzatura da video e ho iniziato a scattare sempre più foto. Mi piace ricordare tutti questi viaggi e tutte le sessions con i miei amici. Il tempo scorre molto velocemente nella nostra vita e credo che questo è il mio modo di renderelo un po' più lento.

How did your passion for skateboarding?

I started skateboarding at the age of 13. I’m not very talented so at first I bought a video camera and began to film my friends in the first steps of skateboarding. I also liked to took pictures and one day I bought a camera and tried to take skate shots.

I like it more to freeze the moment than see the pictures pass by. So I sold my movie equipment and took more still pictures. I love remembering all these trips and sessions with my friends. The time runs very quickly in our lives and I think this is my way to make it a little bit slower.

Che attrezzatura fotografica usi?

Per piccoli lavori e scatti di skateboard uso una Canon 5D Mark III. Per escursioni e altre cose invece uso una Fuji XT-1. Utilizzo entrambe le fotocamere per lo pi첫 con diverse prime lenses. Ho anche obiettivi zoom, ma mi piace la nitidezza e i bokeh che si ottengono con le prime lenses.

What camera equipment do you use?

For little jobs and skateboard shots I use a Canon 5D Mark III. For hiking and other things I use the Fuji XT-1. Both cameras I use mostly with different prime lenses. I got zoom lenses too but I love the sharpness and bokeh from prime lenses.

Ti ispiri a qualcuno, sia nello stile di vita che nelle foto skateboard? È una domanda davvero difficile per me. Penso che nel diluvio di social media e internet in generale, in cui si vedono tante belle foto e altre cose, ci sono tante cose che ci danno l'ispirazione. Ma la maggior parte del tempo ciò mi rende più che altro triste. Mi dà la pressione che mi spinge a fare foto sempre migliori. Il modo migliore è quello di uscire e fare le foto che ami.

Vai a casa, le guardi e cerchi il colpo di fortuna. Non lasciare che qualcun altro ti dica che le immagini sono noiose o non buone.

Are you inspired by someone, either in lifestyle that in skateboarding photographs?

It’s a really hard question for me. I think in the flood of social media and internet generally, where you see so many good pictures and other stuff, there are so many things which give us inspiration. But most of the time it makes me sad. It gives me pressure to make better pictures. The best way is to go out and make pictures you love. Go home, look at them and get lucky.

Don’t let someone else tell you that your pictures are boring or bad. Take pictures for yourself!

Parlami della scena skate nel tuo paese?

Abbiamo un team di skaters molto bravi nella nostra città. Si chiama Mr.Wilson. Questi ragazzi fanno un ottimo lavoro. Organizzano concorsi e hanno costruito un bel parco fai-da-te nel 2014.

Kassel ha un sacco di ottimi punti per girare e sono anche molto vicini tra loro. Non hai bisogno di una macchina per andare da uno spot all'altro. C'è anche un buon negozio di skate, gestito da e per gli skaters. Quindi, in sintesi, penso che abbiamo una buona scena skate per una città con una popolazione di quasi 200.000 abitanti.

Tell me about the skate scene in your country?

We have a very awesome skate club in our town. It’s called Mr.Wilson. These guys do a very good job. They organize contests in our skate hall and built a very nice D.I.Y. outdoor park in 2014. Kassel has a lot of very good skate spots and they’re very close together. You don’t need a car to get from spot to spot. There’s a good skate shop too, from and for skaters. So in summary I think that we have a very good skate scene for a town with a population of nearly 200.000.

Da quanto tempo vai in skate e come ti sei avvicinato a questo mondo?

Faccio skate da circa 5 anni cominciando per le strade della mia cittĂ , ho conosciuto lo skateboard grazie amici ma giĂ ero appassionato di sport da tavola.

How long do you skate and how do you approached this world?

I skate from about 5 years, and I began on the streets of my city. I first met skateboarding with friends but I was already obsessed by all board sports.

Ogni quanto cambia tavola? Set-up ideale?

Di solito cambio tavola una volta ogni mese-due mesi, mi piace variare tavole per provare diverse marche ma fino ad ora preferisco le REAL e le FRANK, truck THUNDER 139 e poi per il resto come ho giĂ detto preferisco variare.

How often do you change your table? Ideal set-up?

I usually change my table every month or two. I like to try different brands tables but until now I prefer REAL and FRANK, THUNDER 139 truck and then for the rest as I said I prefer to vary brands.

Da chi trai ispirazione ogni giorno?

Non ho uno skater in particolare da cui prendo ispirazione, ho sempre pensato "sono io io mio skater preferito!" visto che , anche se prendo spunto si da altri skater che ammiro, a me deve piacere prima di tutto il mio modo di skateare.

From who you get your inspiration every day?

I do not have a skater in particular from which I take inspiration, I always thought, "I am my own favorite skater!" given that, even if I take inspiration from other skaters that I admire, I should like first of all, the way I skate.

Luca Sequino - Ollie Nemmeno il tempo di posizionare il secchio, che Luca si era già chiuso il suo “ollie the garbage first try” che mi ha poi gentilmente replicato.

Another point of view Sei uno dei local più talentuosi del Post Fata Resurgo Skatepark, cosa significa per te avere un park nella tua città? e come vedi la scena che gira attorno ad essa?

Ho scoperto riguardo il progetto di uno skatepark a Torre del Greco circa 3 anni fa e da allora ho sempre cercato di essere presente per questa novità che nella mia città non s'era mai vista, considerandola una vera fortuna avendo uno spazio per sport come skateboard o bmx. Progetto che chiama l'attenzione anche della scena skate napoletana che è in continua crescita e a cui mi fa molto piacere essere partecipe.

You are one of the most talented Post Fata Resurgo Skatepark locals, what does it mean for you to have a park in your city? And how do you see the scene that around it?

I found out about the project of a skatepark in Torre del Greco about 3 years ago and since then I have always tried to be involved in this new thing that had never seen in my town, considering it a blessing to have a space for sports like skateboarding or BMX. A project that calls the attention of the Neapolitan skate scene that is growing and I am very pleased to be a participant.

C’è un posto dove hai sempre desiderato andare a skateare ma non sei riuscito a visitare?

Mi è sempre piaciuta l'idea di poter viggiare per skateare, andare al nord nelle zone di Milano o nello skatepark di Molfetta aperto da poco più di un anno ma che purtroppo non ho ancora avuto la possibilità di visitare.

Is there a place where you always wanted to go to skate, but you could not see?

I always liked the idea of traveling far to skate, to go to the northern Italy, like Milan, or to the new Molfetta skatepark which opened just about a year ago, and I didn't yet had the chance to visit.

A parte il punto di vista tecnico, secondo te lo skateboard cosa riesce a creare, anche dal punto di vista di emozioni?

Lo skate è adrenalina, soddisfazioni e relax allo stesso tempo, dipende sempre da come ci si approccia. Personalmente lo skate mi libera la mente, è uno sfogo ed è bellissimo e divertentissimo da praticare!

Besides the technical point of view, what do you think skateboarding is able to create, from the point of view of emotions?

Skateboarding is adrenaline, satisfaction and relax at the same time, it always depends on how you approach it. Personally, skating frees my mind, is an outburst and it's beautiful and fun to do!

Sono nato e vivo sul Monte Amiata, in provincia di Grosseto. Precisamente, nel borgo medievale di Arcidosso, sotto il maestoso Castello Aldobrandesco. La mia vita è divisa in due parti, quella di giorno da grafico pubblicitario, quella di notte… da artista. Da grande non pretendo molto, desidero continuare a portare avanti le mie professioni contemporaneamente.. continuando a fare arte con la stessa passione “malata” e lo stesso sorriso.

Hello Michele, please introduce yourself as a person and as an artist: where are you from, what do you do and what you want to be?

I was born and I live on Mount Amiata, in the province of Grosseto. Precisely, in the medieval village of Arcidosso, under the majestic Castle Aldobrandesco. My life is divided into two parts, graphic designer by day... and artist by night. Since I do not pretend a lot "when I grow up", I want to continue my profession... at the same time continuing to make art with the same "sick" passion and the same smile.

Passioni, attitudini, interessi? Cosa ti lega al mondo dello skateboarding?

Diciamo che io e lo skateboarding abbiamo una sorella in comune. La musica.

20 anni fa ho scoperto, tramite una fantastica compilation in cassetta, la musica punk.

Quando ho ascoltato per la prima volta No Fun dei Sex Pistols, ho capito che strada seguire. Ho capito quanto due parole e un riff stupido di chitarra avrebbero influenzato la mia vita. Ho cambiato look, ho comprato uno skate (forse da 25 mila lire) ed ho cominciato a disegnare mostri. Ho cominciato ad andare a ruota di hard core californiano (NoFX, Rancid, Lagwagon, Sick Of It All, etc etc…) e fare skate nel piazzale coperto di un supermercato.

Passions, aptitudes, interests? What binds you to the world of skateboarding?

Let's say I have a sister in common with skateboarding. The music.

20 years ago I found out, from a fantastic compilation cassette, punk music.

When I heard for the first time Sex Pistols' No Fun, I realized that that was the road to follow.

I realized how few words and a stupid guitar riff would have influenced my life. I changed my look, I bought a skate (perhaps 25 thousand Italian Lire, about 12 Euros) and I started to draw monsters. I started going a lot whit Californian hard core (NoFX, Rancid, Lagwagon, Sick Of It All, etc etc ...) and to skate in a covered supermarket square.

le tue opere hanno una vena crust/punk. Da cosa trai ispirazione e come sei orientato nei confronti della musica?

Come ho anticipato prima, il punk è stata la fonte/cultura/passione che ha inspirato il 99% delle mie opere. Anche attuali. l’1% mancante è la Fede. Oltre alle note musicali della cultura del Punk, sono ispirato dalla stravaganza, l’autodistruzione consapevole, i colori, la grafica delle locandine dei concerti. Il nero.

Adesso la musica e gli artisti che ascolto si sono evoluti, o meglio… “arricchiti”, perché per me sono molto vicini alla cultura musicale che ho nel cuore. Parlo di Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash.. per arrivare a Moderat, Apparat, John Hopkins.

In ogni suono o parole che ascolto, la cosa che mi piace di più e accomuna ognuno di questi artisti.. è il creare canzoni che ti fanno evadere, ti fanno scappare e ti fanno vedere il mondo da una prospettiva che solo tu, e in quel momento, puoi cogliere.

Your works have a crust/punk vein. By what and how you get your inspiration and how are you oriented towards music?

As I mentioned before, punk was the source/culture/passion that inspired the 99% of my work. Also in the present days. 1% missing is Faith. In addition to the musical notes of the Punk culture, I get inspired by the extravagance, the conscious self-destruction, the colors, the graphics of live concerts posters.

The color Black.

Now the music and the artists that I listen to, have evolved, or rather... "enriched", because for me they are very close to the musical culture in my heart. I mean Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash... but also Moderat, Apparat, John Hopkins.

In any sound or words I hear, the thing that I like most and unites each of these artists... is that they create songs that make you escape, make you run away and make you see the world from a perspective that only you, and in that precise moment, can seize.

Pensieri profondi?

A tratti molto. A tratti talmente banale che per assurdo ti ci perdi dentro.

Deep Thoughts?

Sometimes a lot. Sometimes times so banal that ironically you'll loose in it.

Che tecniche usi per le tue opere, e come hai evoluto il tuo modo di lavorare?

Lo strumento artistico che diventa parte di me, è qualsiasi tipo di penna, pennino e pennarello. Diciamo che il mio braccio adesso potrebbe essere sponsorizzato dalla Uniposca. È lo strumento che mi permette di esprimermi tecnicamente alla perfezione. Il mio modo di lavorare non è evoluto, diciamo che si è arricchito ed ha acquistato un senso. Verso i 15 anni ho cominciato a disegnare puppets con teste ed occhi giganti, con pupille molto grandi o molto piccole che davano sempre l’impressione di essere fatti.

In realtà lo erano un po’, per questo motivo si sono deformati sempre di più.. mentre intorno loro cresceva un mondo che ormai avevo fatto mio. Un mondo ancora in costruzione.

Durante questo periodo ho frequentato anche l’Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze.. passando dal disegno di nudo classico, alla pittura astratta ad olio senza provare nessuna emozione e senza percepire un minimo attaccamento a quel tipo di segno. Così via per 4 anni, saltando dal una scuola di pittura all’altra. Dopo di che ho applicato quello che avevo “imparato” al mio stile, a modo mio.

Conoscendo meglio l’anatomia, ho potuto sbizzarrirmi ancora di più sulle deformazioni.

Conoscendo meglio la pittura, ho capito che dovevo totalmente andare nella direzione opposta. Senza mai staccarmi dal concetto di Dipinto.

Conoscendo meglio la storia dell’arte, ho potuto analizzare il mio lavoro, il mio percorso, ho capito che dovevo amarla e rispettarla, e capire la sua grande forza comunicativa.

Adesso continuo a disegnare il mio mondo complesso fatto di persone che lo abitano e che non hanno senso nella forma ma comunicano a dovere quanto la gente del mondo reale sia strana.

What techniques do you use for your work, and how you have evolved the way you work?

The artistic tool that becomes part of me, is any type of pen and marker. Let's say that my arm could now be sponsored by Uniposca. It is the tool that technically allows me to express myself in the perfect way. The way I work has not evolved, let's say that it has enriched and has acquired a meaning. At the age of about 15 I started to draw puppets with giant heads and eyes, pupils with very large or very small and that always gave the impression of being high. In fact they just were a bit, that is why they always deformed more and more... while around them a world that I had done mine grew up. A world still under construction.

During this period I also attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence... going from classical nude drawing, abstract oil painting without feeling any emotion and not receiveing a minimum attachment to that type of sign. So on for four years, jumping from one school of painting to another.

After that I applied what I had "learned" to my style, my way.

Knowing better the anatomy, I could play around even more on deformations.

Knowing better painting, I knew I had to go completely in the opposite direction. Never going away from the concept of painting.

Knowing more about the history of art, I could analyze my work, my journey, I knew I had to love and respect it, and understand its great communicative power.

Now I continue to draw my complex world made up of people who live in there and who have no sense in form but who properly communicate how much the real world people is strange.

vivi del tuo lavoro? Quali sono le soddisfazioni che hai avuto nel corso degli anni grazie alle tue opere?

Vivo del mio lavoro da grafico pubblicitario. Ho uno studio mio che mi da molte soddisfazioni in ambito lavorativo. La soddisfazione più grande è sicuramente chi apprezzando la tua arte, ti da modo di esprimerti e poter comunicare liberamente quello che pensi.

Il fatto di essere apprezzato, è la soddisfazione più grande in assoluto per un artista.

Oltre a questo, ogni mostra è una bellissima esperienza. Si conosce molta gente, ci si fanno tanti amici e si ammira ogni volta luoghi diversi. È il mio modo di aprirmi al mondo ed alle persone.

Do you live thanks to your job? What are the rewards that you've had over the years thanks to your work?

I live with my work as a graphic designer. I have my own study that gives me a lot of satisfactions in the workplace. The greatest satisfaction is definitely who, appreciating your art, gives you a way to express yourself and to communicate freely what you think.

Being loved is the greatest satisfaction ever for an artist. In addition to this, every show is a wonderful experience. You can meet a lot of people, you make lots of friends and admire each time different places. It's the way I open myself to the world and to the people.

Nei tuoi lavori spesso è ricorrente una figura con le orecchie a punta… tell me about that.

Sono orecchi da coniglio. I miei personaggi discendono quasi tutti da conigli, la figura del coniglio ha sempre in un modo o in un altro segnato la mia vita. è sempre comparso, sbucato fuori sotto forma di parole o immagini.

Ho un coniglio tatuato, Nick Cave è un coniglio.. in un suo romanzo. Il coniglio per gli antichi egizi era ritenuto conoscitore dei misteri della vita. Il coniglio è simbolo di abbondanza negativa, di esagerazione, di qualcosa che finisce sempre male se si va oltre la soglia. Le mie opere sono storie “oltre la soglia”.

I corpi esasperati, mutati, surreali, distorti rappresentano questo.

La prospettiva non esiste, la finzione che si percepisce è talmente esasperata che riesce a generare riflessioni sulla realtà. Cerco di portare il pubblico a riflettere sulla società che ci circonda attraverso il mio punto di vista.

In your works there is often a recurring figure with pointed ears... tell me about that.

Those are bunny ears. My characters are almost all descended from rabbits, the rabbit shape has always, in a way or another, marked my life. It has always appeared, popped out in the form of words or images.

I have a rabbit tattoo, Nick Cave is a rabbit... in one of his novels. The rabbit for the ancient Egyptians was considered an expert of the mysteries of life. The rabbit is a symbol of negative abundance, exaggeration, something that always ends badly if you go over the threshold. My works are stories "over the threshold". The exasperated, mutated, surreal, distorted bodies represent this.

The prospect does not exist, the fiction that you feel is so exasperated that can generate reflections on reality. I try to bring the audience to reflect on the society around us through my point of view.

Sicuramente crescere nell’arte e continuare a fare mostre su mostre.

Creare un’opera d’arte che comunichi tutta l’essenza della mia arte è il progetto più grande.
