Non sono il tipo a cui piace fare resoconti.

Sai le solite storie, un anno è passato…etc etc Ad ogni modo noi siamo riusciti a stampare per un intero anno.

Impegnandoci per quello che ci concede la vita di ogni giorno, tra lavoro, spese e casini vari. Com’è gestire un magazine che va in stampa dal profondo sud Italia?

Beh è fico, ci fa stare bene e ci diverte sopratutto.

Buoni propositi per il nuovo anno?

Non ne abbiamo, a noi interessa skateare e migliorarci giorno per giorno,che cambi o meno la data sul calendario.

Lo skateboarding e’ la migliore cosa che ti possa capitare, non darla mai per scontata e godila al 100%, il resto sono chiacchiere da instagram.

I’m not that kind of guy who likes to do a record of the past year.. same old story…another year is gone etc etc..

Anyway we've been able to print magazine the whole year, with all the things that a real life add to this ‘hobby’, work, bills and so on…

How does it feel to run a skateboard magazine from the wild south italy? It's cool, we love it and we have fun doing it!

New year resolutions?

We don’t have resolutions, we just want to skate and try to get better day after day, regardless of the date on the calendar.

Skateboarding is the best thing that can happen to you, don’t take it for granted, take care of it and enyoy it 100%.

The rest is instagram chit chat.

Labor in NYC is the kind of skateshop you need in your city.

James had a good eye for the last goodies that comes out in the market.

Be respected,in a city where skateboarding has a great history likes NYC is not easy. Anyways NYC is no easy for running a skateshop, and if Labor is still on fire after 6 years and half , that means TRUE SKATEBOARDERS Operated.

Labor a NYC è il tipo di skateshop di cui avresti bisogno nella tua città.

James ha buon occhio per le ultime chicche uscite sul mercato.

Essere rispettati, in una città come New York in cui lo skateboarding ha una grande storia, non è facile. In ogni caso a NYC non è facile gestire un negozio di skate, e se Labor è ancora on fire dopo 6 anni e mezzo significa che i VERI SKATEBOARDER sono operativi.

M: Hi James how u doing? How old is now Labor?

J: All good thanks, Labor is now 6 and half years old.

M: Ciao James come stai? Quanti anni ha adesso Labor?

J: Tutto bene grazie, Labor ora ha 6 anni e mezzo.

M:Reading one of your old interviews, I had noticed that before opening Labor you came into the city and ask to the shops of that time if it was ok to open a new skateshop. This is something that not so many people/skaters care about, how much is important for you to pay homage and respect to skateboarding?

J:I think it's really important to do, especially now that is really tricky, business, think about rent, life cost, chain stores, but yeah I think it's the best to check it out. See what has been done and what is the current situation.

At that time there was Autumn that has been open for 10 years, it closed, so I started checking if there was the need for a new skateshop and what people were asking for.. In the end in New York there aren’t a lot of skateshops but you can buy skateboards everywhere, Zumiez, Vans Store…but those are chain stores not real skateshops…so I tried to be in touch with all the other skateshops ,communicate and help each other with the opening.

M: Leggendo una delle tue vecchie interviste, avevo notato che prima di aprire Labor, sei venuto in città a chiedere ai negozi di quel tempo se fosse giusto aprire un nuovo skateshop.

Questo è che non interessa a molte persone/skater, quanto è importante per te rendere omaggio e rispetto allo skateboard?

J: Penso che sia davvero importante, specialmente ora che è davvero complicato, gli affari, pensare all'affitto, al costo della vita, alle catene di negozi, ma sì, penso che sia il migliore per verificarlo. Guarda cosa è stato fatto e qual è la situazione attuale.

A quel tempo c'era “Autumn” che è rimasto aperto per 10 anni, poi ha chiuso, così ho iniziato a vedere se c'era bisogno di un nuovo skateshop e cosa chiedevano le persone .. Alla fine a New York non c'è molto come skateshop ma puoi comprare skateboard ovunque, Zumiez, Vans Store ... ma quelle sono catene di negozi non veri skateshop... quindi ho cercato di essere in contatto con tutti gli altri skateshop, comunicare e aiutarci a vicenda con l'apertura.

M: Do you receive support from the brands you run in the shop?

J: Yeah basically everyone is really supportive, from the big brands like DLX to the small brands even if they didn’t owe a lot of money, they help with introducing new kids to the store,etc..

M: Ricevi supporto dai marchi che gestisci nel negozio?

J: Sì, praticamente tutti sono davvero di supporto, dai grandi marchi come DLX ai piccoli marchi, anche se non hanno molti soldi, aiutano a introdurre nuovi ragazzini nel negozio, ecc.

M: How is skateboarding in NYC nowadays?

J: I think it's strong and positive. There are a lot of kids and a lot of old dudes still around.

New kids, old people, they always get excited about skateboarding.

From my side I try to be positive with everyone and backing all the new positive things that comes out from the city.

M: Com'è lo skateboard a New York al giorno d'oggi?

J: Penso che sia forte e positivo. Ci sono molti bambini e molti vecchi tizi ancora in giro. Nuovi bambini, vecchi, sono sempre entusiasti dello skateboarding. Da parte mia cerco di essere positivo con tutti e di sostenere tutte le nuove cose positive che vengono fuori dalla città.

M: I saw that you distribute some of the Labor merchandise in Japan, Have you ever thought about opening a new Labor shop somewhere else like west coast (California), Europe or Japan too?

J: We definitely talk about it, West coast is really full, I have friends that run skateshops over there, Lotties, Kingswell, DLX, and they are doing a great job so I don’t think they need us there.

Europe and Japan I’d love to do it, but I think it has to be needed.

M: Ho visto che distribuisci alcuni dei prodotti in Giappone, hai mai pensato di aprire un nuovo Labor altrove, come la costa occidentale (California), l'Europa o il Giappone?

J: Ne parliamo sicuramente, la costa occidentale è davvero piena, ho amici che gestiscono skateshop laggiù, Lotties, Kingswell, DLX, e stanno facendo un ottimo lavoro quindi non credo che abbiano bisogno di noi lì.

Mi piacerebbe farlo in Europa e in Giappone, ma penso che sia necessario.

M: And what about the European brands in a city like NYC? J: I try to pay attention to everything since I started skating and travelling.

I was always kind of obsessed with European brands like Clichè, Blueprint but everytime I went back I didn’t receive a good feedback from the American skateboarders, but what’s rad now is that skateboarding is more global, and European skate spots are way better than ours.

Ok New york is the best city for me to skate, but in Europe there are a lot of plazas, like Milano, Barcelona, and we don’t have places like these. Nowadays people is traveling a lot, so there are more connections.

A special tribute goes to Josh Stewart, he opened the market to all these brands like Polar, Magenta, Isle...

M:A proposito dei marchi europei in una città come New York?

J: Provo a prestare attenzione a tutto da quando ho iniziato a skateare e viaggiare.

Sono sempre stato ossessionato dai marchi europei come Clichè, Blueprint ma ogni volta che tornavo non ricevevo un buon feedback dagli skateboarder americani, ma quello che ora è importante è che lo skateboarding sia più globale, e gli skate spots europei sono molto meglio dei nostri.

Ok New York è la città migliore per me da skateare, ma in Europa ci sono molte piazze, come Milano, Barcellona, qui non abbiamo posti come questi. Oggigiorno la gente viaggia molto, quindi ci sono più collegamenti.

Un omaggio speciale va a Josh Stewart, che ha aperto il mercato a tutti questi marchi come Polar, Magenta, Isle...

M: What’s the best era for skateboarding in NYC in your opinion?

J: It’s really hard to say, but I think is right now, with all the new crews, the new faces etc.

But the mid 90’s or specially for me early 2000 were rad. Anyway now everything is still growing and it’s so good for the skateboard community.

M: Qual è l'era migliore per lo skateboard a New York secondo te?

J: È davvero difficile da dire, ma penso che sia proprio ora, con tutte le nuove crew, i nuovi volti ecc.

Ma la metà degli anni '90 o specialmente per me all'inizio del 2000 erano pazzeschi. Comunque ora tutto è ancora in crescita ed è ottimo per la skateboard community.

M: What’s your favorite skateshop right now?

J: Humidity in New Orleans M: Any good advice to your next custumer that will come in?

J: Just come into the shop, say what’s up and I’ll help you with a smile!

M: Qualche buon consiglio per il tuo prossimo cliente?

J: Entra nel negozio, di cosa succede e ti aiuterò con un sorriso!

Si, recentemente ho cambiato sponsor di tavole.

E’ successo tutto in modo molto casuale haha Una giornata normalissima come le altre......che poi risultò non esserlo..... ero a casa mia con Brian Londono finchè ad una certa ha squillato il telefono... mi era arrivato un messaggio sul mio numero di telefono. Sai ormai oggi abbiamo tutti sti smartphone talmente smart da dirti pure chi ti ha mandato il messaggio senza avere il contatto salvato.. in poche parole siri e in grado di trovare il nome della persona che ti ha scritto!

Il messaggio diceva: (maybe) Andrew Reynolds Credo sia stupido precisare che mi ha iniziato a battere il cuore super forte haha!!

Il messaggio diceva sono andrew reynolds vieni ad LA, vieni a skateare per Baker!

Se c’è una cosa che non si puo fare e dire di no al boss!

Si,recentemente ho cambiato sponsor di tavole.

Si certo,cambiare sponsor di tavole non e un tradimento..ci tengo tanto al rapporto che si crea tra un possibile team menager e il team,credo che sia una delle cose piu importanti. E come con ogni team menagear dei miei sponsors ce prima l’amicizia che si e creata del possibile lavoro,o come vuoi chiamarlo! Element europe e stata la mia family e lo sara per sempre! Anche se cambio sponsor di tavole!

Nonostante il passaggio a Baker sei sempre in contatto con i riders di Element?

Sai essere pro e il sogno di ogni skater..ogni skater sogna di poter appendere la propria tavola al muro credo per soddisfazione personale!

Io non penso di dover diventare pro,ma sopratutto questo fatitico sogno di diventare pro un giorno lo sto vivEndo adesso essendo in baker.

In poche parole sono arrivato al punto che essere nel team baker insieme a tutti gli og’s ha lo stesso valore che diventare pro.

Cio non vuole dire che mi sento pro...ma la mia soddisfazione personale e allo stesso livello di quel giorno in cui vedi il tuo nome sotto una tavola!

Per me oramai diventare pro e diventato un extra soddisfazione..io sono contento cosi,amo skateare e niente cambierà mai tutto cio!

Io credo che diventare pro sia un riconoscimento per quello che hai fatto,per l’impatto che lasci a qualcun altro!

Sai essere pro e il sogno di ogni skater..ogni skater sogna di poter appendere la propria tavola al muro credo per soddisfazione personale!

Io non penso di dover diventare pro,ma sopratutto questo fatitico sogno di diventare pro un giorno lo sto vivEndo adesso essendo in baker.

I don’t know, I ask myself all the time what I am doing. I’ll let you know if I figure it out.

Richard sei nel settore da molto tempo ormai, è davvero bello essere in questo nostro mondo?

Non lo so, mi chiedo sempre quello che sto facendo. Ti farò sapere se lo capisco.

You lived so many eras in skateboarding, which one do you think was the best one?

I just wrote something about this.

People are so concerned with nostalgia and ‘Golden Eras’ but I think the best era is probably just whatever era you got into skating. Or perhaps when you got more involved in skating, if you did become involved. They are all just different and to be honest, now is the best era in many ways. I don’t like how ‘big’ skating is but ’These are the days, they always have been’ as it once said on a Consolidated sticker. The best era is always ‘now’.

Hai vissuto così tante ere nello skateboard, quale pensi sia stata la migliore?

Ho appena scritto qualcosa a riguardo.

Le persone sono così preoccupate della nostalgia e delle 'Golden Eras', ma penso che l'era migliore sia probabilmente qualunque sia la tua skate-epoca. O forse quando sei stato più coinvolto nello skate, se ti sei fatto coinvolgere.

Sono tutte diverse e ad essere onesti, ora è l'era migliore in molti modi. Non mi piace come 'grande' sia diventato lo skate, ma questi sono i giorni, sono sempre stati' come una volta ho letto su un adesivo Consolidated. L'era migliore è sempre "ora".

What motivated you to starts push?

I quit shooting for several years and just made art. When I started again, there were not many magazines around, they were pretty thin, and I didn’t really care for their perspective. My new photos were mounting up, so I thought I’d make one magazine for fun. And then I made another one and another one..

Hopefully it provides something a bit different and hopefully there are enough people that like PP that it is worth keeping it going.

What motivated you to starts push?

Ho smesso di scattareper diversi anni dedicandomi all’ arte. Quando ho iniziato di nuovo, non c'erano molte riviste in giro, erano piuttosto sottili, e non mi importava molto della loro prospettiva.

Le mie nuove foto stavano aumentando, quindi ho pensato di creare una rivista per divertimento. E poi ne ho fatta un’altra e un’altra.. Speriamo che offra qualcosa di un po 'diverso e spero che ci siano abbastanza persone a cui piaccia PP e che calgala pena continuare a farlo.

Push is a lot focused on specific project , how every issue is made?

It’s not really planned that way, it just turns out that way. I see what happens.

Although PP13 will be a special, unusual project and I’m excited about putting that one together..

You are one of the less photographer that still shooting on film, why u never switch on hd?

I never wanted to. I have nothing against it but I prefer my photos to ‘exist’, I want to hold the negatives.

There is more of a craft to film photography and it’s more satisfying (when it works). If I was shooting something I didn’t care about keeping, I would happily shoot it in digital. At this point, I know how I want things to look, and I just like the qualities of film.

Push è molto focalizzato su un progetto specifico, come viene fatto creato?

Non è davvero pianificato in quel modo, gira intorno ad esso. Anche se PP13 sarà un progetto speciale e insolito e sono entusiasta di metterlo insieme ..

Sei uno dei pochi fotografi che continua a scattare su pellicola, perché non passi al digitale?

Non ho mai voluto. Non ho niente contro, ma preferisco che le mie foto "esistano", voglio tenere i negativi. C’è più lavoro e più soddisfazione (quando funziona). Se stavo fotografando qualcosa che non mi importava di tenere, lo avrei fotografato felicemente in digitale. A questo punto, so come voglio che le cose appaiano, e mi piacciono le qualità delle pellicole.

One of the best experiences you had in all this years of skateboarding trips?

Oh, there are a lot but I’ll tell you over a glass of wine at the bar.

Do you think the new kids have the same motivation that kids in the 90’s had???

Yes and no. The motivation is the same when you start skating- it’s fun and it’s a challenge and it’s creative. But nowadays, kids (and their parents) can come into it with what I regard as the wrong mindset, i.e. sponsors, money, an ‘athletic career’..

It’s different.

Una delle migliori esperienze che hai avuto in tutti questi anni di viaggi con lo skateboard?

Oh, ce ne sono molte ma te le dirò dietro un bicchiere di vino al bar.

Pensi che i nuovi bambini abbiano la stessa motivazione che avevano i ragazzi negli anni '90 ?

Sì e no. La motivazione è la stessa quando inizi a skateare: è divertente, è una sfida ed è creativa. Ma al giorno d'oggi, i bambini (ed i loro genitori) possono entrare in ciò che considero la mentalità sbagliata, cioè gli sponsor, i soldi, una "carriera atletica"... È diverso.

In your next skate trip you can choose the team from past and future, who’ll be on the list?

Ha, ok, off the top of my head- Keenan Milton, Glen Fox, Neil Blender, Jake Johnson, Sean Greene, Julien Stranger.

That should be interesting.
