a letter from the principal Dear alumni and Bishop Noll supporters, My children recently celebrated their 100th day of school by dressing up like senior citizens, dusting their hair with white powder and putting on glasses.

As much as the 100th day of school is a joyous event for my children, it made me ponder what the 100th year means for Bishop Noll Institute and what impact BNI has left on Northwest Indiana and the world these past 100 years.

A century is a huge milestone in any establishment’s history.

In our 99th year we opened the brand new STREAM Lab that services more than 150 students daily. We have updated all of our lockers and will soon be updating lights and blinds throughout the building, giving BNI a facelift before the Centennial Celebration!

As much as these exterior updates improve our environment, what really matters is what takes place INSIDE our classrooms. Daily prayer begins our day as students begin a seven-hour commitment to academic challenges and our faculty strives to prepare them for the next four to five years at a premier college. In seven hours

we challenge our students to not only listen to their faith but to put their faith into action by being the hands and feet of Jesus in our communities. In seven hours for 180 days we challenge our students to be the best version of who they were created to be. The work we do in 2020 is the same since 1921. We are committed to creating disciples and growing the Kingdom of Heaven! In 99 years we have successfully churned out priests, nuns, doctors, lawyers, politicians, musicians, nurses, teachers, parents, and so much more!

Being open 100 years means that BNI has had to adapt to the needs of our community, businesses, and families to constantly meet the academic changes of 10 different decades. Whether it’s 2020 or 1921, our halls are still filled with faith, hope, and love.

I am confident as leader of BNI that we will continue to produce proud BNI Warriors who live as disciples of Christ in Mind, Body, and Soul. I encourage all of you to keep 1519 Hoffman Street in your prayers as we begin our 100th school year this fall, and I encourage all of you to come visit your alma mater and your extended family here at BNI as we ring in the 100th year!

Help us go green!

In celebration of Bishop Noll Institute’s first century, and recognizing its vision to thrive well into the second century, “Forever Noll” will be the theme of BNI’s centennial celebration.

That date is the actual anniversary of the first day of classes at what was then called Catholic Central High School.

The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ religious order started the school in two classrooms at St. Mary School in East Chicago in 1921.

BNI’s centennial committee and subcommittees meet monthly. If you are interested in participating or would like to offer any celebration suggestions, please send an email to centennial@bishopnoll.org.

Kairos 21

Golf Invitational

The Alumni and Friends Golf Invitational will take place Monday, July 20, 2020, at Innsbrook Country Club in Merrillville. It costs $200 per golfer and includes lunch, golf and cart, drinks on the course, dinners and prizes. A reduced fee of $100 is available for young alums, those who graduated from 2010-2020.

Sponsorships are always needed and appreciated.

White Sox Night

Tickets are now on sale at the Bishop Noll Main Office for BNI Night at the White Sox, taking place at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 23, 2020, at Guaranteed Rate Field. Game tickets ($20 if purchased by April 30) and bus transportation tickets are available.

The White Sox will play the Minnesota Twins.

The beautiful log cabin retreat center at LaSalle Manor in Plano, Illinois, was the setting for the 21st Kairos retreat, which took place Feb 18-21. While Kronis (Greek for “clock time”) is the way we live our daily lives, students are on Kairos (Greek for “God’s time”).

Without clocks, watches, cell phones or other electronic devices, students explore their faith through personal stories, group discussions, prayer services, silence and play.

Through monthly all-school Masses, annual spiritual retreats and daily prayer, Bishop Noll continues to produce proud BNI Warriors who live as disciples of Christ in Mind, Body, and Soul.

Homecoming & Tailgate 2020

Alumni and friends of Bishop Noll Institute will reunite Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, as part of the annual Tailgate Party.

After the Homecoming football game, the Tailgate Party begins in the fieldhouse.

Tickets cost $25 per person. Attendees must be 21 or older. Sponsorships needed.

a message from our president igniting & inspiring a fervor to learn

In November, we celebrated a significant advancement of Bishop Noll Institute, already an A-rated school boasting the highest graduation rate of any Lake County high school the past six years.

We cut the ribbon to our state-of-the-art STREAM Lab, a STEM facility unlike any other in the Region and for many miles beyond.

But as rewarding as it was to open the STREAM Lab—the epicenter of our growing STREAM program—it has been much more gratifying in these past few months to observe our students and teachers capitalizing on this great new learning space to explore new methods of learning, new excitement in achievement.

Our STREAM faculty members confirm that their students are showing an elevated excitement to learn, and they’re reaching students in ways they hadn’t previously seen. Students are displaying more proud moments, showing immediate gratification, while letting their creativity shine. And when you have that fervor and enthusiasm to learn, the sky’s the limit.

This has been a truly rewarding example of how all parties working together for a common goal can create true success.

To wit: • A vision for this renovated learning space was created by our principal, Lorenza Jara Pastrick, and her faculty STREAM Team.

• That vision was applied to a plan that had administrators, faculty and students working with the professionals to design a learning space in which form would follow function.

• Our loyal alumni and stakeholders, along with the Diocese of Gary, generously supported the plan through our Ignite & Inspire capital campaign, raising the funds to make this possible.

• And members of our School Board, administration and facilities team worked tirelessly with our subcontractors to ensure the STREAM Lab renovation was executed to plan and within budget.

And what an opportunity our students now have to thrive, always expanding their horizons. This new learning space provides the tools—such as 30 high-end computers, multiple 3-D printers, scroll saw, drill press—plus the space to get more students accomplishing more functions.

In our principles of engineering class, for example, students can design a robot on the computer, build part of the robot with metal parts, program its robotic movements from the computer, then finish it with parts designed and produced on one of our 3-D printers.

This type of student-centered advancement, within our culture of Catholic faith teaching, is at the heart of why we ask our alumni and stakeholders to invest in our students, our mission and our future. So to all of you who have invested and helped us raise the bar, my heartfelt thanks for believing in BNI and what we are accomplishing with your assistance. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

As we prepare to enter our 100th school year, and as we set the table for a thriving BNI well into our second century, I ask you to please consider investing in BNI moving forward. Know that your giving to BNI makes a significant difference.

Bishop Noll secured its place as a leader in STEM with the unveiling of this $1.45 million Lab. During the grand opening event, administrators, faculty, staff and friends of Bishop Noll explored new spaces where current Warriors have begun to study science, technology, engineering and math with art and religion components.

Ignite & Inspire update Ignite & Inspire Campaign within $1.2 million of goal heading into its final months: How you can invest In its final year, Bishop Noll’s Ignite & Inspire capital campaign is $1.2 million from reaching its goal of $3.5 million, thanks to the hundreds of BNI stakeholders who have made gifts to the school’s inaugural capital campaign.

“We are so grateful for the generosity of our alumni, our faculty, staff, parents and friends who have so generously given so that the tradition of BNI excellence will continue to make a difference for generations of students to follow,” Bishop Noll President Paul Mullaney said.

“But we have a way to go. I ask all of those who haven’t yet been able to invest with us in our Ignite & Inspire campaign to prayerfully consider doing so as we head down the campaign’s home stretch.”

Work is complete on the first campaign objective—creation of a state-of-the-art STREAM Lab to benefit BNI students in what is Indiana’s first fully integrated high school STREAM program.

That program highlights the areas of science, technology, religion, engineering, art and math. The Ignite & Inspire campaign’s other objectives are to renovate the school’s outdoor athletic facilities and create an endowment to provide secondary degree assistance to BNI teachers.

Mullaney said the campaign’s title is part and parcel to what takes place every day at BNI—and has for nearly a century.

“Our faculty and staff ignite a passion for learning within our students, and as women and men of faith they inspire our students to live up to the ideals for which we stand,” Mullaney said.

“Yet the students ignite and inspire us as well, as we see them explore, investigate, experiment, evolve and achieve. They remind us that their experiences here at Bishop Noll are setting the stage for a lifetime of commitment. Today’s BNI students will one day lead our communities, our church, our world. We want to make sure we provide them the best tools to allow them to thrive.”

PROGRAMMING SKILLS: Bishop Noll students program robots using their iPads and the new high-end computers in the BNI STREAM Lab. Noll students get their first taste of robotics in their freshman STEM intro class, and many expand on that when they take one of the engineering electives offered. Electives in the BNI STREAM program include classes in engineering, computer programming and biomedical science.

NEW YEAR, NEW SPACE: On the first school day of 2020, Bishop Noll students began attending their STEM and engineering classes in the new STREAM Lab in the Whelan Innovation Center.

Current and future Warriors now study science, technology, engineering and math with art and religion components in this state-of-the-art space. They work in the learning studio and design lab, the makerspace, and a prototype studio.

FEATS OF ART: After Bishop Noll’s faculty STREAM Team recommended that St. Joseph the Worker should become the patron saint of BNI’s STREAM Lab, Noll alumnus Christopher Klockek ’77 was commissioned to create a sculptured tribute to St. Joseph that would be displayed prominently in the renovated facility. No paints or stains were used in the 7-by-7foot sculpture. Colors, hues and shades emanate exclusively from the 20-plus species of wood from around the world used in the artwork.

DIOCESAN HISTORY: As students work in the STREAM Lab, a seven-foot crucifix adorns the wall above the main entrance. The crucifix previously was displayed at Holy Trinity (Hungarian) Church in East Chicago, where it was displayed from 1930 until the diocesan church was closed in 2016.

Bishop Noll celebrated Homecoming in October with a 1980s theme.

Spirit Days included Pac Man Day, 80s Movie Day (complete with Breakfast Club tribute by the teachers) and Extreme Warrior Wear Day.

Angelica Solis and Chris Valdes were crowned Homecoming queen and king during a chilly halftime.

“Being named Homecoming King was something great that just added to the fun of Homecoming! I say this because I didn’t need to be crowned king to have a great time at Homecoming. And also, everyone looked like kings and queens at the dance,” said Valdes.

“Spirit week was so much fun. I really enjoyed dressing up because you wear something that you wouldn’t usually wear on a normal basis and I thought that it was really fun. My favorite outfit was Extreme Warrior Wear because it’s really fun to show your school spirit,” said sophomore Jacqueline Garcia

Bishop Noll names Graduates with Distinction

Bishop Noll Institute has announced its Graduates with Distinction for the class of 2020.

These top academic seniors all earned a 4.0 or above GPA. These grades also determine the valedictorian and salutatorian.

Lakeshore Chamber to honor BNI math teacher Mark Miller

Math teacher Mark Miller has been named a Teacher of the Year by the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce and will be honored during this year’s annual awards dinner.

Miller has taught mathematics for 12 years. All 12 of those years have been spent at Bishop Noll Institute, where he has taught everything from eighth-graders in Algebra 1 as part of the school’s STEM initiative, all the way up to seniors in Calculus. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics teaching from Purdue and will soon begin pursuing a master’s degree in order to teach college level courses at Bishop Noll. Miller enjoys the challenge of mathematics and likes to help his students succeed and be prepared for life after high school. In addition to his classroom responsibilities, he serves as the math department chair, works in the school’s business office and coordinates all of the school’s ACT and SAT testing.

What does earning this award mean to you? Earning this award makes me feel like I am making a difference. It feels like it has been worth all of the effort that I have put in for 12 years.

What do you enjoy about teaching at Noll? The thing I love most about

teaching at Noll is the family atmosphere.

I felt like I have belonged here since I first walked through the doors in 2008.

As far as my classes are concerned, I love teaching Calculus. With that class you get the best students and the ones who are most serious about their academics.

They are fun to work with and when I am teaching that class, I never feel like I am working.

What is a fun piece of trivia about you?

In high school, my pre-calculus teacher wouldn’t give me permission to take calculus my senior year and now I am teaching it! I tell students this story every year to show them to not ever let anybody tell you that you can’t do something.

SHAKESPEARE SLAM: Bishop Noll seniors Angela Luna, left, Catherine Menge and Litzi Maldonado competed in the Regional Bout of the Chicago Shakespeare Slam program. They performed a scene from “As You Like It” and another mash-up scene from “The Comedy of Errors.”

FUTURE DOCTORS: The Bishop Noll Biology Club sponsored an event featuring a professor of neurobiology and developmental biology at Purdue University Northwest. She shared her expertise on the human brain and students were able to hold a human brain, spinal cord, and some cockroaches used in neuroscience research to observe realtime action potentials of live, signaling neurons.

BIOLOGY LESSONS: Earlier this semester, Bishop Noll’s Biology Club met with Dr. Ayodeji Adegunsoye, an internist and pulmonologist at University of Chicago Medicine. Bishop Noll students prepared for this discussion by reading Dr. Adengunsoye’s research before the visit. Students also toured some of the university's labs in the Department of Human Genetics. The Biology Club is sponsored by Becky Dostatni ’00.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD: The Bishop Noll Science Olympiad team qualified to advance to the Indiana Science Olympiad State Tournament for the first time in its known history. Unfortunately, the state competition was canceled in March.

Team captain Giovanni Komyatte, senior, has been on the team the past three years and said going to state means that the team has succeeded.

“The way our competitions are set up make earning trophies or medals nearly impossible, but getting to state was a great success,” said Komyatte.

campus ministry IN OUR OWN WORDS: Life of a Campus Ministry intern

SPEECH AND DEBATE: Bishop Noll’s Speech Team continues to strive for success and achieve it. The team won the Calumet Forensics League Championship in December 2019. The 2019-2020 speech season has seen more than 30 students compete in both speech and debate.

SPRING MUSICAL: For the spring musical, the Drama Department will perform “Once Upon a Mattress” April 17-19. The play takes on the famous fairy tale “The Princess and the Pea,” where the princess is unable to sleep on a bed of mattresses with a tiny pea placed under the bottom mattress. Mrs. Kayla Konkle, theater director, picked this play to coincide with this year’s theatre department’s theme of “Fairy Tales & Fables.” The play is funny and great for all audiences. BAND: Several Bishop Noll Band students earned medals at the Indiana State Solo and Ensemble competition at Munster High School.

Students Jackie Milkowski, Rebecca Carlos, Nyree Ruiz, Hanna Abuzead, Savannah Benitez, Abigail Wojtaszek, Gabrielle Merritt and Carlos Guzman competed along with 400 other high school band students from around the state. Bishop Noll students landed gold, silver and bronze medals.

“It made me a better player by pushing myself to be the best I can be,” Merritt said.

Being a Campus Ministry intern has brought many opportunities for me to help in the “behind the scenes” of many things that happen in school like Masses, retreats and planning of Catholic Schools Week!

I’ve learned to appreciate campus ministers because it is hard work.

This winter, I felt a calling to do good for those that couldn’t help themselves and wanted to collect necessities for homeless people and deliver them to those in downtown Chicago as my own Campus Ministry project. When Miss B (BNI Campus Minister Stacia Bolakowski) agreed to let me carry out this project, I knew that it was going to be hard work. Since I was so inspired and dedicated to do this project to serve the community, I got down to planning and executed this project during Catholic Schools Week. I was excited to see how the student body would help make my plan successful and how they’d be giving back to the community as well. We were close to our goal of 40 snack/necessities bags! This has helped me take initiative and become a leader.

Another thing I have learned as a Campus Ministry Intern is that we are not only to serve our school but we are called so serve our community as well. As interns we went to feeder schools and we led retreats. This year, we did a sixth and seventh grade retreat for St. Mary’s in Griffith. We did a skit that showed anyone can be called to be God’s server and that we should accept that calling. We also showed them they can pray using their senses. We finger painted, taste tested and heard a song and then we wrote reflections about it. We helped them understand that those reflections can be prayers. Being with younger kids and showing them that our faith isn’t just Bible readings and that we can have fun with it can be eye opening not only just them, but for most of us because we feel that way. We talked about how even a conversation that is offered up to God is the same as prayer. This has been an important lesson I have learned because it has shown me that I have an impact on others.

Q AND A-MEN: Theology teacher Kevin Driscoll has partnered with Bishop Noll chaplain Father Kevin Scalf, C.PP.S., to present a new theology feature to sophomores called “Q & A-men!”

Students generate questions each week and Father Scalf will help provide answers. While most weeks will feature a pre-recorded video that will be played in class, on January 17, Father Scalf joined the students in person. One student in each class served as the host and asked the questions, including: Why can’t priests get married?

Why is Mass so boring?

How will God come back?

Why are we required to go to Mass? Is it that big of a deal if I don’t?

COMMON GROUND: Mass, food and fellowship helped high school students bond during an event in the Diocese of Gary. Bishop Noll Institute students joined students from Andrean and Marquette high schools at a special Mass and lunch. Bishop Noll senior Felicity Miranda said it felt awkward when the three schools first arrived.

They were then split into groups and played games with students from the other schools.

“Afterwards, when we were all eating lunch, we weren’t as shy. I was able to make friends. We were able to bond over stuff like Kairos and classes.

We were all sad when we had to leave because we were just starting to get to know each other.”

Congratulations, Bishop Noll Warriors, on winning state 2A hockey championship

Congratulations to the BNI hockey club team under Coach Rich Sobilo ’83 on winning the class 2A state championship in March.

The Warriors defeated Valparaiso 2-1 at the Indiana State High School Hockey Association State 2A finals at Midwest Training and Ice Center in St. John for the third state championship in the program’s history. The Warriors won the state championship in hockey in 1988 under Coach Ed Hreha and in 2017 under Coach Sobilo.

The Bishop Noll community came out in December to the new Kube sports complex and ice arena in Hammond for an open skate session, followed by the annual BNI alumni hockey game. Thirtytwo former BNI players and coaches—ranging in age from 19 to 60—participated in the game.

“The team has numerous events throughout the year that are related to Bishop Noll,” Sobilo said. “We always have our alumni skate around the Christmas holidays. It is free for alumni, family and friends to come skate. It is followed by the alumni game.

Each year we also do a CYO Day and invite kids from Catholic grade schools to come do public skating. It’s an opportunity to give back.”

The coach and referee locker room at the Kube ice arena is named after Ed Hreha, Bishop Noll's director of facilities. Hreha has a long history in hockey in Northwest Indiana as a player, coach and referee. He ran the Purdue University Calumet club hockey team and restarted the Noll hockey team in the 1980s.

5 Fun Facts about Bishop Noll freshman football player and swimmer Luke Buksa Buksa continues the Bishop Noll legacy as the fifth member in his immediate family to attend Noll. Buksa also has numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins who are BNI alumni. Buksa has a sister who is a junior at BNI and has another sister who will be joining the BNI family next school year. “My favorite part of BNI is the family atmosphere.

Buksa is all about trying new things at Bishop Noll. Over 2 this past summer, he decided he was going to play football at Noll. He had never played football before, but with hard work and dedication, he quickly learned the ins and outs. He ended up receiving his varsity letter at the end of the season. “My favorite part of this football season was all the game days because there is nothing like Friday night lights,'' Buksa said.

Along with football, Buksa joined the swim team. He 3 hadn’t swam competitively since he was in 3rd grade. On the swim team, he swims the backstroke and freestyle.

New Ice Rink

The state championship team has a new hockey rink to bring its trophy home to, thanks to Bishop Noll alums Frank Buck ’79 and Stanley Sobilo ’79, who opened the Kube Sports Complex and hockey rink in December.

Located off Interstate 80/94 at Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, the Kube will make Noll’s hockey team more accessible to local players. The team has its own locker room, and games will be more conveniently located for Bishop Noll student fans to attend.

Coach Sobilo has been an integral part of the Bishop Noll hockey program since the ’80s and is excited to provide the Bishop Noll community with special opportunities at the Kube.

FOOTBALL REUNION: The 1989 state championship football team reunited at Homecoming this past fall to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this momentous occasion in Bishop Noll history.

Coaches, players and team managers from the state team were honored at halftime.

WRESTLING REBUILD: Rebuilding Bishop Noll wrestling is under way according to Coach Robert Maldonado. The Warriors ended the 219-20 season by garnering two individual sectional placers and advancing them to IHSAA Regionals. Jacob Cardenas ’23 placed 3rd at 106 pounds and Robert Gula ’23 placed 2nd at 113 pounds. Leading the team as captain was Natalie Ramirez ’21, returning IHSGW state placer, who worked hard to guide these athletes in the right direction.

With so many underclassman and so much potential the wrestling warriors are sure to make Bishop Noll proud and put the wrestling program back on the map…or back on the mat!

SWIM TEAM: The swim team had a great season, with athletes working hard to make it to this year’s sectionals.

The team will be losing six seniors, but has several dedicated swimmers ready to step up for next season.

3rd Annual Bishop Noll Night with the White Sox White Sox vs. Minnesota Twins 7 p.m. Thursday, July 23 at Guaranteed Rate Field

Tickets are now on sale at Bishop Noll for BNI Night with the White Sox, when the White Sox entertain the defending AL Central Division champion Minnesota Twins.

With a face value of $28 each, tickets will be sold at Bishop Noll for $20 each through April 30; for $25 each from May 1 through June 15; and for $30 each from June 16 until game day while supplies last.

Proceeds from ticket sales at BNI benefit the school’s Annual Fund.

3,300 students in 10 elementary and high schools in the Diocese of Gary including Bishop Noll. The program will begin first in areas of greatest need including Hammond, East Chicago and Gary. Alumni Giving Back Through Scholarships

We have much to be thankful for when it comes to scholarships at Bishop Noll. Over the years, several alumni and friends have established scholarships in memory of a loved one, a classmate or to honor someone they admire. Over the past six months, two scholarships were established, which will ease the burden of tuition costs for students and their families.

Last fall BNI alum Al Dubiak ’58 established the Dr. Andrew J. Chmiel ’58 Memorial Scholarship in memory of his friend and fellow classmate who died in August, 2019. Dr. Chmiel practiced medicine in the Washington D.C. area for 43 years. In addition, he served as a Company Commander in Vietnam with the First Cavalry Division for which he received the Bronze Star while also receiving an award from the South Vietnam Government for patient care to villagers during the war. The scholarship will be awarded yearly to a student from St. Stanislaus School in East Chicago who will be attending Bishop Noll.

At their 45-year reunion in September, alumni from the Class of 1974 were inspired to establish a scholarship to support current BNI students. Spearheaded by Paul Liszewski, who found further inspiration from the Warrior Spirit Scholarship established by Terry Murphy ’75 in 2018, the Class of 1974 Spirit Scholarship was established. Selected by the BNI faculty, the scholarship is awarded to an incoming senior who has shown the most improvement during their time at BNI. Pelka established the Sister Scholastica Scholarship in 2010 to honor his chemistry and physics teacher who had a great impact on his life and his professional success.

Jon Bock Fieldhouse

In 2019, the Bishop Noll family lost one of its cherished young alums with the sudden and unexpected passing of Jon Bock.

A member of the Class of 2012, Jon played on the 2011 state finalist basketball team. He loved basketball and he loved being a BNI Warrior. More importantly, Jon loved his family, friends, teammates and classmates.

Last spring at the annual Big Event fundraiser, several of Jon's classmates and friends were the winning bidders of the naming rights to the Bishop Noll fieldhouse.The fieldhouse was dedicated to Jon during a home basketball game.

Peanut Butter Drive

To help replenish the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana with a staple item, Bishop Noll students collected more than 1,300 jars of peanut butter. Student Council, partnering with the Advancement Office, ran the traditional Peanut Butter Drive and greatly exceeded the goal of collecting 800 jars.

For the past 12 years, Bob Homrich ’67 has challenged Bishop Noll students to collect peanut butter to donate to the food bank.

Homrich donates to Bishop Noll’s Annual Fund as a thank you for its collection efforts.

“That’s an unbelievable amount of peanut butter from this group. I am so proud of what these young adults can accomplish to help those who may be in greater need,” Homrich said.

The peanut butter challenge began after Homrich read an article about lack of food in Haiti. People were making pies out of dirt and water and baking them to eat, he said.

“I couldn’t wrap my mind around this. . . . Many thoughts ran through my mind. I might not be able to reach out to them, but maybe I could do something more local and involve a larger group than just myself and so it began.”

Peanut butter, a staple that food banks run out of most often, is popular because children like it, it has a long shelf life, it is filling, and is a good source of protein for families that cannot afford meat. Helping replenish the food bank helps students remember others in need.

Bishop Noll instills in students the value of service to others.

In addition to the peanut butter drive, students collected more than 10,000 items this fall to benefit the St. Joseph Food Bank in Hammond. Noll’s National Honor Society hosts and organizes multiple blood drives during the year and Campus Ministry students visit senior citizens at the neighboring Albertine Home.

Girls On The Run

The Bishop Noll Cheer Team volunteered at the Sparkle Station during Girls on the Run Northwest Indiana. The girls painted faces and helped runners go glam during the 5K run near Hammond’s Wolf Lake.

It’s not uncommon for Bishop Noll alumni to connect in unexpected ways.

In February, at the Edina, Minn., home of Dan Hunt (BNI ’74), the Edina High School wrestling team gathered for the sixth straight year for the Edina Wrestling Mentor Series. Dan continues to host the event years after his son, Devan, graduated from Edina.

Dan was thrilled to learn that this year’s featured speaker was none other than Damien Harmon (BNI ’96), who is senior vice president for workforce design at Minnesota-based Best Buy. The most recent guest speaker to address Edina’s wrestling team and parents, Damien spoke about perseverance, humility and grace.

founders day On September 16, 2019, Bishop Noll Institute celebrated Founders Day, honoring the day Catholic Central High School opened its doors for the first time to an enrollment of 40 students.

The celebration included a Founders Day Mass, birthday cake served to students at lunch and an evening alumni Mass. After the all school Mass, alumni from the audience and who work at Bishop Noll showed students the proper way to sing the fight song.

Anna Babinec Miskovich wrote that she and her husband, Jim, are enjoying life with their four wonderful children and five beautiful grandchildren.

1938 HAPPY 100th BIRTHDAY, RUTH Ruth Barrett Mulhern, believed to be our oldest living alum, celebrated her 100th birthday in December and was invited to Bishop Noll for a Warrior style celebration. Having spent her days at Catholic Central High School, Ruth truly shows the modern day Bishop Noll Warrior spirit in mind, body and soul.

During the BNI boys basketball game—Senior Night vs. Gavit – longtime Bishop Noll volunteer Rich Gard was recognized for nearly 30 years of service to Warrior athletics. Since the early ’90s, Gard has served in many capacities: as public address announcer for boys soccer, girls soccer, football, boys basketball and girls basketball; as clock operator for boys and girls basketball; and as a member of the football chain gang. This is in addition to volunteering he has done and continues to do in his church and his community.

Jason Ruiz ’95 honored with teaching award

Jason Ruiz, an associate professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame, has won the 2019 Sheedy Excellence in Teaching Award, the highest teaching honor in the College of Arts and Letters. He received the award in December at a reception in his honor.

“It means the world to me to be recognized in this way,” he said, “especially because the College is full of great teachers I admire.”

Ruiz, who came to Notre Dame in 2008, is also an affiliated faculty member in the Gender Studies Program and the departments of Africana Studies and Film, Television, and Theatre, and a fellow in the Institute for Latino Studies.

Ruiz said that teaching at Notre Dame was a “dream job” for him.

But over the last 11 years, he has found it to be even better than he expected.

“Notre Dame has allowed me so much freedom in what I teach and research and has been incredibly generous in supporting me,” Ruiz said. “If you have a good idea, even one that people might at first assume is too ambitious, this is the place where you can make it happen.”

Ruiz is currently writing a book on Latino representations in popular culture from the start of America’s war on drugs to the present. Last winter, he received funding from the College of Arts and Letters and Notre Dame International to take a small group of students to Colombia to explore the aftermath of the war on drugs.

“Since BNI, I have become a passionate world traveler and just visited my 49th state. I just need to go to Alaska! This year I am on sabbatical while I finish my second book and I am living in Cali, Colombia.”

Ruiz credits Mrs. Fredi Conley and the Bishop Noll Drama Club for giving him a sense of stage presence, which is essential for teaching big classes.

“I am grateful that the Drama Club was my home during my years at Noll,” he said.

Lori Granich committed to role as registered dietician nutritionist

Lori Granich, MBA, RDN, CAE, is a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified association executive.

She is the director of Lifelong Learning and Engagement for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Academy, the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. Granich also currently serves as an adjunct professor at the University of New England and teaches graduate students in the Applied Nutrition program.

In 2018, she received Association Forums Forty under 40 designation, which recognizes nonprofit professionals who are under 40 years of age and demonstrate strong leadership skills and commitment to the profession.

Granich recently found out she passed the exam to be designated a Certified Association Executive (CAE), the highest professional credential in the association industry. In April, she will be inducted into her alma mater’s

(Illinois State University) 2020 College of Applied Science and Technology Academy of Achievement.

Lori began her career serving as a clinical dietitian for ARAMARK Corporation at St. Margaret Mercy in Dyer (Franciscan Health) and went on to earn her MBA from Benedictine University.

Q: What are you most proud of?

A: I’ve really pushed myself personally and professionally the past 10 years. I’m very honored to have received the accolades mentioned above, but I also make time for personal growth (I’m a huge book lover and love to train and compete in various endurance races). I’ve run the Chicago Marathon, completed two Chicago Triathlons and am currently training for a half Ironman. I know its cliché, but I’m a firm believer in “being comfortable with the uncomfortable” and investing in yourself.

Q: Do you feel like Bishop Noll helped prepare you for your future career and if so, how?

A: I’m lucky to have spent a good amount of time surrounded by strong female leaders. This started at Bishop Noll. BNI gave me the opportunity to learn from people with different experiences and backgrounds than my own.

I’ve gained mentors throughout my career and schooling and I’ve used their experiences to pave my own path.

Q: Any favorite Bishop Noll memories?

A: Bishop Noll will always have a special place in my heart.

Bishop Noll professional school counselor Ashley Comer caught Darby Garcia hard at work at Indiana State University. Garcia is majoring in social work.

Dominic Companiott, a St. John Bosco class of 2015 and Bishop Noll class of 2019 alum, recently taught second- and third-graders about ocean creatures. Companiott attends Central Methodist University in Missouri and is studying marine biology. His presentation to the St. John Bosco students was on coral restoration.

He is a specialized diver and has had the opportunity to study the oceans of Honduras and Florida.

The Bishop Noll Class of 1968 had so much fun at the 50th reunion, classmates could not wait for another gettogether. With a majority of the class turning 70 in 2020, they decided to throw a birthday party. Classmates are invited to attend the event starting at 6 p.m. May 21, 2020, at Buddy & Pal's Place, 12026 Summit St. in Crown Point. Cost is $15 per person for dinner buffet. Drinks are not included. The Bishop Noll Class of 1965 will have a 55th reunion June 12-14, 2020. Events include a pizza dinner, banquet and picnic.

The pizza party is at 6 p.m. June 12 at State Line Pizza in Schererville. Cost is $15. Cash bar begins at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. June 13 at Andorra Banquets in Schererville. Cost is $40. A picnic will take place at 1 p.m. June 14 at a location TBD. Cost is $10.
