greetings from our principal What does it mean to ignite or to inspire? Inside this edition of Noll Today you will be given the opportunity to ignite and inspire the next generation of BNI Warriors.

Every generation says it. Whether we graduated from BNI in the ’40s, ’60s, or ’80s, at some point in our lives, we have heard or made comments about “these kids today … ” These comments are made comparing behavior, culture, or opportunities of “kids today” to those of a past generation.

I believe it’s important for you to understand what it means to be a “kid today” at BNI. I am here to tell you that teenagers today deal with the same stresses that you did as a teen. How would you ace the theology test? Whom would you go to winter formal with?

How could you help your friend who is stressed and beginning to lose his faith? The same questions that once filled your head now fill our students’ minds at BNI. The only difference is they deal with the same problems along with added pressure from the media and today’s technology.

The same technology that we pride ourselves in providing with our 21st century learning opportunities at BNI is the same technology that adds new stresses to our student body. Our students are still expected to meet BNI’s rigorous academic standards, participate in extracurricular activities, and attend Mass weekly, all while having social media fill their minds with wrong examples of being successful. I am here to tell you that even with the additional stress of being a teen in 2017, our students are still becoming successful disciples of Christ in ministry, scholarship and leadership.

As BNI alums you should be proud to say that your school has maintained its 99 percent college acceptance rate. You should be proud that your school still offers extracurricular activities in the arts, sports and leadership. You should be proud that your school continues to help youth build a strong relationship with Christ. As alums you should want to continue the BNI tradition of excellence … but how?

How can you continue to ignite and inspire today’s youth in NWI? In this edition of Noll Today, you will find a special insert that gives you the opportunity to do just that for our current and future BNI students. We ask you to make a donation toward our Ignite and Inspire campaign and show your support for the school that made you successful.

Bishop Noll Institute has announced its Graduates with Distinction for the class of 2017. These 26 top academic seniors all earned a 4.0 or above GPA. Their grades also determined the valedictorian and salutatorians.

Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick said, “The number of students who received this honor is a testament to the class of 2017.

They’re a hard working group of driven students ready and willing to exceed.”

Scouting project benefits Bishop Noll athletes

Inspired and inspiring, Bishop Noll senior Danny Cuevas dedicated his Eagle Scout project to benefit his school community.

For the service project, which asks Scouts to demonstrate leadership of others while completing a project to benefit his community, Cuevas purchased and assembled athletic benches for Bishop Noll’s outdoor field.

“I wanted to do this because I wanted to give back and leave my mark on the school that I love so dearly,” said Cuevas, the class of 2017 co-salutatorian and captain of the varsity soccer and varsity wrestling teams.

All of his Bishop Noll teachers have inspired Cuevas’ spirit of giving.

“These teachers not only sacrifice time but dedication to the students.

They offer the best of their knowledge and abilities to cultivate their students in mind, body, and soul. They serve as a prime example of what a Christian should be and the generous, loving spirit Christians should live out,” he said.

Burgun greatly impacted his life.

Cuevas, who is in marching and concert band, said Carioto spurred his interest in music, and he plans to major in music and political science in college.

Burgun has taught him to see deeper meaning both in literature and life and has helped improve his writing and literary analysis.

Cuevas hopes his Eagle Scout project inspires others.

“I hope the project demonstrates to future generations of BNI Warriors, especially those who are considered minorities, that they can do whatever they put their mind to and that no dream is too small. I know for a fact that Bishop Noll students and alumni have the potential to impact the local, national, and global community in significant ways. I want to show the current students and future generations that making these impacts are possible.”

Noll senior learns from leaders in medical field

Bishop Noll senior Liliana Mendez has a passion for medicine and joined other high school students from around the country who aspire to become the next generation of leaders in the 3 medical field.

Mendez, a class of 2017 Graduate with Distinction, represented Bishop Noll and the State of Indiana at the National Leadership Academies’ Congress of Future Medical Leaders, which took place in Boston, Mass. She was taught by some of the greatest living minds in medicine.

“Attending the Congress amongst my peers who had the same difficulties, dedication, and drive for medicine as I did helped establish my passion for medicine,” she said. She plans to study medicine to become a doctor with multidisciplinary care in the trauma unit.

Mendez said her family and many Noll faculty and staff members have encouraged her to pursue her dream.

“They have guided me and helped me when I struggled, and they have also opened doors for me that are not normally opened to teenage girls. Since my first day at Noll, teachers such as Ms. Dostatni, Ms. Omelanczuk, Ms. Skurka, Mr. Trafny, Mr. Burgun, Mr. Belluomini, Ms. Liliana Mendez attended Schmidt, Ms. Sandoval, Mrs. Ramos, and Ms. Arnold have the Congress of Future always been willing to help me with whatever I need. The Medical Leaders this summer. faculty and staff at Noll have always reminded me that I can do what I set my mind to and they have believed in me since day one, and for that I am extremely grateful.”

Ms. Skurka ’74 taught Mendez in junior theology and said she is a thoughtful student who is always willing to learn about her church and faith.

Ms. Dostatni ’00 is Mendez’s Honors Biology teacher and said she is a serious, pensive and mature student.

“I hope that Liliana follows her dreams and continues to work diligently at everything she chooses to do in her life. She pays great attention to details and will become an excellent professional in the medical field,” Dostatni said.

Thespians honored

Bishop Noll Thespian Troupe 3873 competed at the Bethel College Regional Competition on Nov. 19. Tianna Orr, of Hammond, was named by the Indiana State Troupe Officers (STO) as Bishop Noll’s “All Star Performer.” Amelia Chavez, who played the title role of Lupita, was named “Best Supporting Actress” in the entire regional.

Chavez, of Chicago’s East Side neighborhood, joins a select group of actors in Indiana, as only six students in the entire state can say they have this award.

Fall Play

Bishop Noll’s Marching Warriors wait to rehearse for the Liberty Bowl halftime show in Memphis, Tenn. This was the first time the band performed at a bowl game.

Marching Warriors immersed in music, culture

Following months of hard work and fundraising, the Marching Warriors successfully performed in their first bowl game in December. In order to afford the trip to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., band families held several fundraisers. They were also supported by generous alumni, friends and businesses and are most grateful for the support they received.

In a field of 13 bands from around the country, Noll received a third-place award for its field competition show, “Band Wars,” based on the “Star Wars” movie series. The band also was recognized for its parade, concert band and jazz band performances.

Results were “beyond our expectations,” BNI band director Mr. Rocco Carioto said of the first bowl game appearance for a BNI band.

In addition, BNI senior saxophonist Daniel Cuevas won the festival’s MVP Award, chosen from more than 500 participating high school band members.

During the band’s final performance of the trip, students played in the Dec. 30 Liberty Bowl halftime show with other school bands and Grammy-winning R&B and funk group The Commodores.

BNI band members were able to meet, greet and get a photo with the group.

Noll French horn and mellophone player Tajé Wilson, of East Chicago, said seeing The Commodores walk into the stadium for rehearsal was her best memory from the trip.

“It was surreal to be able to play alongside a group as legendary as The Commodores with my band mates and the other bands,” she said. “It was at the rehearsal that I realized how many people I was blessed to be able to share this experience with.”

During their stay in Memphis, known as the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll, band members visited many cultural sites including Graceland, Sun Studio and the National Civil Rights Museum.

Mr. Carioto said his favorite part of the trip was seeing the impact the Civil Rights Museum had on the students, noticing “the questions they were asking, the conversations that took place and the extreme sorrow and empowerment they felt for their fellow human beings.”

Playing at the Liberty Bowl will lead to new opportunities for the Marching Warriors.

“Now that we performed at a bowl game and did well, we are on the bowl game company's roster of bands,” Mr. Carioto said. “I

“We wanted to do something that was fun and high energy,” said Kevin Burgun, English teacher and the play’s director.

Choir news

Bishop Noll’s Choir spread holiday cheer throughout Northwest Indiana during its recent concert tour. Stops included St. John the Baptist School in Whiting, St. Mary’s School in Griffith and Hartsfield Village Assisted Living in Munster.

The students hit the road with well-rehearsed numbers like “You’ll be in my Heart” by Phil Collins, “Last Christmas” by George Michael and “Somebody to Love” by Freddie Mercury.

"Every semester, the choir is so excited to tour around Northwest Indiana and the Diocese of Gary,” said choir director David Herr. “The tour gives the BNI choir students their greatest opportunity to spread their love and admiration of music to the surrounding community. Performing in front of live audiences gives them a sense of purpose, and plays a major role in their development as young adults.”

Making Christmas brighter for those who need it most, Bishop Noll Institute participated in Diocese of Gary Catholic Charities Adopt-a-Friend program. This gift drive provides adults and children in need with Christmas gifts ranging from coats and warm clothes to toys.

Thirty-one Noll teams, which consisted of a homeroom class or group of staff members, received the name, age, sizes and wishes of an individual. The team purchased and wrapped gifts. For many, gifts from Bishop Noll were the only real gifts they received at Christmas.

Campus Minister Stacia Bolakowski said the goal and purpose of working with Catholic Charities is to help provide Christmas for people who have no access to extra funds.

Next year, Bishop Noll will host the gift giveaway breakfast, which includes visits from Santa and a catered breakfast.

Thinking outside the box

Helping soup kitchen

In the spirit of helping others, Bishop Noll held its annual Thanksgiving food drive Nov. 1 to 21. We collected more than 4,000 nonperishable items, which were delivered to the Saint Joseph Soup Kitchen in Hammond.

Students, faculty and staff who brought in 30 items or more received Golden Warrior status, and we had 56 Golden Warriors this year!

Helping babies

Bishop Noll choir students perform during a tour stop at Hartsfield Village Assisted Living in Munster. All of the residents, including quite a few Noll alums, and their guests enjoyed the special concert.

Spreading Christmas cheer

In honor of Respect Life Month, Noll students and staff held a baby bottle fundraiser. We raised more than $300 to benefit the Women's Care Center in Hammond. The class of Ms. Lydia Skurka ’74 collected the most during the drive. Thank you to all of our students and staff for showing the true spirit of giving!

Beginning next school year, Bishop Noll students will have the opportunity to participate in Science Olympiad, one of the nation’s premier science competitions.

Noll’s team of students will compete with other schools in a variety of scientific/mathematical disciplines such as earth science, biology, physics, chemistry and more. Competitions will allow students to take a hands-on approach and encourage them to think outside the box.

“It really takes on a whole new level of competition,” said team sponsor and Bishop Noll math teacher Colie Zwierz. She said she hopes students at Noll are as excited as she is about the new team.

“I think this is something that Bishop Noll has been missing out on for many years. This organization is great because it makes learning fun.”

Speaking up

Bishop Noll’s speech team continues to grow after being resurrected in fall 2015. This year, 28 students practiced or attended a tournament as part of the team and in five out of eight regular season tournaments, Noll brought home a trophy!

“We call ourselves Bishop Noll Speech Volume 2,” said coach Mr. Kevin Burgun. “For many, many years Bishop Noll was a ‘player’ in the speech and debate world and then it died out.

Unfortunately, we don't have access to any records. The state doesn't keep any records other than state champions, and the national office has no records before 2002 that are electronically searchable. So, we dubbed ourselves ‘Volume 2’ and started over.

When we are out and about at tournaments, we still have veteran coaches remember Noll from their heyday. We are hoping to get back there.”

Students Julia and Michael Fugger, performing in the Original Performance event, placed in every tournament they attended this year.

“Getting the team to the point where we are contending for trophies at almost every tournament is huge,” Mr. Burgan said.

“We have a solid group of freshmen and sophomores. I already can't wait for next year.”

Young role models of faith share their stories

One of Bishop Noll’s resolutions is giving students the opportunity to meet and learn from younger role models in faith. During a recent visit by four seminarians from the Diocese of Gary, students heard stories of their journeys and asked questions of these future priests.

“Campus Ministry's invitation to expose the sophomores to their local seminarians was a fantastic opportunity and hopefully one they will treasure,” said Noll theology teacher Mr. Johan Castaneda. “I personally consider it a relevant and essential component of learning for educators in the faith to point out younger and ideally relatable role models. It is easier to appreciate and embrace our Christian values and set of morals when one is able to properly identify individuals who exhibited them and act as beacons of hope for everybody else.”

Seminarians Jeff Burton, of Valparaiso; Deacon Nate Edquist, of LaPorte; Declan McNicholas, of Chesterton; and Jacob McDaniel, of Michigan City; visited Noll the week before Christmas break.

The four men study at Mundelein Seminary, where Father John Kartje ’83 serves as rector/president. They talked to students about their personal journeys to the priesthood and the discernment process, which is when men or women in the Catholic Church recognize their vocation: married life, single life, religious life or ordained life.

“We're really wanting to help young men in our diocese see priesthood as a joyful life, just as marriage, single life or religious life might be what God has in store for them,” Burton said.

Campus ministry

“Joy, with peace, is the sister of charity. Serve the Lord with laughter.”—Padre Pio Walking into Bishop Noll for the first time two months ago, it was easy to see joy within these walls. Students and staff radiated with it as I got to meet them all. Although I have Nina Hartman volunteers not been here long, I am impressed to see for Bishop Noll’s Campus a sincere eagerness in the students as they Ministry team. The 2015 yearn to discover God’s love for them and Andrean grad is currently a college sophomore to grow deeper in their relationship with applying to enter the Him. In today’s world, this precious jewel convent to become a Dominican Sister at Ann is becoming more and more rare so we must Arbor, Mich. treasure it and thank God for it!

For those who may not know me, I am an Andrean graduate who recently returned from my studies at a university in France.

Currently, I am applying to enter the convent this August to become a Dominican Sister in Ann Arbor, Mich., and am spending this semester helping Miss Bolakowski in the Campus Ministry department here at Bishop Noll.

Adjusting to Warrior life has been a breeze and delight for me, thanks to the staff and students. Bishop Noll has been a safe place to continue living out my faith because of the strong presence of Christ throughout the school that is not just limited to the confines of the chapel or amongst the chaotic, yet, somehow prayerful business of the Campus Ministry room.

At Bishop Noll, I feel the same presence of Christ that I felt on mission trips, Kairos retreats, my first World Youth Day pilgrimage to Krakòw, Poland, or when I took comfort in His loving face after Mass in a French convent with a community of Franciscan Sisters when feeling lonely and homesick. It is the same Christ I felt when I accepted His invitation to discern a religious vocation during an all-night adoration retreat held at a convent where I am now applying to. That same presence of Christ I have felt during all of these grand moments in my life and all of the times in between, has made me confident that I know He is with me on my adventure here at Bishop Noll.

So far, I have felt so much joy from the work that He has planned for me here! He has led me to humbly grow in my service for others and to help students here do the same. Not only must we grow in service, but in doing so, we must grow in our love and understanding for God. If our actions, no matter how small, are done out of true love for God, the latter will follow without a doubt.

The Lord has been very active in Campus Ministry and I have enjoyed seeing Him amidst students participating in class retreats, writing letters of affirmation to their teachers during Catholic Schools Week, visiting Albertine Home residents, celebrating Mass, and much more.

I have found there is a sincere willingness and enthusiasm in the students to share their talents and graces—whether it be by participating in reading or altar serving at Mass, helping Miss B and I out in the CM room, or anything else that may come up.

Even though they may not realize it or believe it yet, by using their gifts to serve and glorify God, He is turning them into saints and they are on a wonderful path to leading a holy life—which is something that God calls each of us to do. There are no exceptions or excuses due to backgrounds, circumstances, or past that excludes us from this call. Although this may seem like a difficult and hefty task to take on, fortunately, our loving and merciful Father works wonders with our baby steps. If we give Him our weakness, He will give us His strength and so much more. By His grace, we are then able to use it to never tire of being kind and helpful towards others. This way of life is much happier and fulfilling than living selfishly for ourselves.

Bishop Noll is blessed to have so many beautiful students that provide the school with an atmosphere of joy and kindness.

Anyone who takes the time to see where this light is radiating from will leave with a desire to do and give more. The Warrior family is a compassionate and God-loving one that will remain in my prayers and heart. Truly, the Lord delights in us and our mission. It’s a blessing to be a part of!

God. He told them, “We are grateful for all of you because we see in you the image of God. We see in you young people who the Lord has created and who the Lord loves.

Each one of you has a future that is amazing. God has a plan for your life and he has given you the gifts you need to make that plan happen and he has put you exactly where he wants you to be. Let us give praise and thanks to the glory of God for everything.”

Before the end of Mass, Bishop Noll students presented Bishop Hying with donations they raised throughout the semester. The money will be donated to Nazareth Home in East Chicago, he said.

Once a month, Bishop Noll’s fieldhouse becomes a place of worship when students, faculty, staff and visitors celebrate Mass together.

Respect for life prayer service

This February, BNI juniors attended the 3 ½-day Kairos retreat at LaSalle Manor in Plano, Ill. Students surrendered their cellphones and kicked off their shoes to escape to God’s time with fellow students, senior peer leaders and BNI staff members. Noll began sending juniors on Kairos retreats in Fall 2013 and students continue to look forward to this special opportunity to connect to their spirituality and each other.

Bishop Noll students learn about respecting all life as part their Catholic education and an all-school prayer service in October gave them even more insight into what mercy and compassion for others truly means. The Campus Ministry Team organized the event in honor of Respect Life Month. Students listened to readings and reflections of mercy from classmates and guest speaker, Nicole Varela.

Varela (whose grandmother is Triny Varela ’54) spoke about challenges she faced overcoming a learning disability to succeed in school. She encouraged Noll students to be somebody because they will find mercy within themselves.

IHSAA Class 2A Regional Champions Girls’ Volleyball

Anthony Repay ’13 was recognized in January at Wabash College’s senior night for a stellar swim career. The chemistry major and biology minor plans to become a pediatric dentist after graduation.

Senior Brittany Anderson signed her letter of intent to play Division 1 softball and volleyball at Valparaiso University.

“It’s rare for athletes to get to play two sports in college. She's an inspiration for all of us because of her perseverance and dedication,” said athletic director Brandi Krolak.

Sophomore Ameer Lawrence bowled two 300 games this season, vs. Lake Central High School and vs. Clark High School. Lawrence also finished 1st in the Greater Lake County All-Conference with a 239 average, third in sectionals and fifth in regionals.

In March, Ameer was invited to the annual Bob Rohrman All-State Scholarship Tournament in Kokomo, Ind. Congratulations and Good Luck, Ameer!

Marcos Keefe ’16 received the 26th annual Anderson-Peterson Family Distinguished Athlete Award during the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner in March.

The Anderson-Peterson award is given for upholding the standards of the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame: dedication, contribution, ability, service and citizenship.

Keefe collected nine varsity letters in soccer, cross country and track and field. He gained academic honors and participated in band, Tri-Music Society and Spanish National Honor Society, while being active in his church. He attends Marian University.

The Bishop Noll Hockey Team hosted a family skate and alumni game Dec. 26 at Homewood-Floosmoor Ice Arena. Following some free family skate time on the ice, two teams of alums and a few current players took to the rink to battle for glory and bragging rights.

Leaving their own legacy: BNI’s freshman boys’ basketball team won the Clark holiday tournament in Hammond. The freshman Warriors defeated Clark 37-26 in a semifinal game before coming from behind to post an exciting 43-41 victory over Morton in the championship game. The boys are coached by Quinn Cloghessy, Class of 2010, and include the following sons of BNI alums: Isaac Fehr, son of Dawn (Rushin) Fehr ’85; Jordan Kammer, son of Jim ’87 and Dessie (Huneycutt) Kammer ’91; and Hunter Laurincik, son of Jennifer (Zbinden) Laurincik ’90.

Roman Penn ’16 has continued his basketball career by joining the Saints at Siena College near Albany, N.Y. Roman left Don Bosco Prep and is headed to Siena this semester because he “was fully NCAA qualified coming out of Bishop Noll Institute ... which allowed him to start college now.” Siena, a Division I school, has appeared in the NCAA Tournament six times in recent history.

Bishop Noll students have celebrated Homecoming for decades and always find a way to leave their own mark on the festivities. This year, with a theme of “Under the Sea,” they transformed the BNI hallways with bubbles, waves and sea creatures. The week culminated in the fieldhouse with a spirited pep rally.

The Dance Team, Cheer Team and band fired up students as the football team received prayers and cheers for the upcoming game. Juniors won the Knockerball (winning against the faculty team in the final round) and Penny Wars competitions.

At the game Friday night, Calumet may have defeated Bishop Noll on the field, but a packed stadium of fans, Homecoming court presentation and great half-time performances kept school spirit soaring.

Bishop Noll welcomed 550 alumni and friends home on Sept. 16 for the annual Tailgate Party. For classes of 1956, ’66, ’76, ’86 and ’96, the Tailgate was the first stop on a weekend of reunion activities.

“Several alums had not been back to the Region in many years and walking into the halls of Bishop Noll brought back fond memories of their high school days,” said Mary Ellen O’Neill, director of advancement.

For decades of dedication and service to Bishop Noll and the Northwest Indiana community, Bishop Noll selected Paul L. and Bette Doherty to join its Hall of Honor for 2016.

During the annual donor reception and Hall of Honor induction, they were honored in the Outstanding Catholic Family category. Paul and Bette, who was honored posthumously, sent six children to Noll and continued to serve after they all graduated.

Son Paul Doherty ’68, introduced his father, saying their family was excited and proud of their parents. His siblings include Peter ’71, Philip ’74, Mary Beth ’75, Jeannie ’82 and John ’84. In addition, two of the Dohertys’ 11 grandchildren attended Noll – Peter ’99 and Colleen ’02.

He noted his father’s involvement within the Noll community and Northwest Indiana community as a whole, in addition to his work with the Diocese of Gary Catholic Charities and the Town of Highland.

“The other person I think is really important to talk about is our mother,” Paul said. “She was very influential in our development and the decision to send us all to Catholic schools.”

After his son’s introduction, Paul L. took the podium to share words of thanks and memories of his “six beautiful

children and the most gorgeous and wonderful wife who ever lived.”

Paul L. went on to thank those in attendance including his special guests Bishop Emeritus Dale Melczek, Monsignor Joseph Semancik, and Father Edward Moszur, Doherty’s pastor at Our Lady of Grace.

Reunited with alma mater, Noll alumna shows devotion to where it all began Story by Marlene A. Zloza ’71 for Northwest Indiana Catholic

Wallene Swentko didn’t just get reacquainted with her Bishop Noll Institute classmates at her 50-year reunion in 2013, she renewed her relationship with her alma mater, too, and the results have been rewarding to both.

“The way I was treated, I felt like I was coming home,” said Swentko about her homecoming. She joined the Class of 1963 Reunion Planning Committee upon the invitation of classmates Dr. Jeffrey Kristoff, of Hilton Head, SC and Dr. Rich Schreiner, of Indianapolis, after the men met by chance in Hilton Head.

“A group of 18 got together at a fish fry at St. Maria Goretti in Dyer, where another classmate, Father Charles Niblick, is pastor. We were extremely inspired and made personal contact with everyone in our class that we could find,” recalled Swentko. “We found we still had so much in common, and the thread was Bishop Noll.”

The reunion drew classmates from throughout the country for a tour, golf, a casual social, a formal dinner and a Sunday morning breakfast and Mass, and brought the alumni closer than ever.

“It was the first time in 50 years that we prayed together as a class, and I truly believe the Holy Spirit was there,” Swentko said. “(Classmate) Tim Mertz came up with the idea of a class gift and our goal was $10,000, but we raised $25,000,” said Swentko, who spearheaded efforts to collect class rings that were no longer worn and sell them for the gold.

After the reunion, “Jeff (Kristoff) and I put together an annual newsletter and we entered a float in Whiting’s 2014 Pierogi Fest Parade. A group of us meet twice a year, and we come back to BNI

for plays, talent night and other events,” Swentko explained. “We encourage others to join us, we send Christmas cards to all classmates, and we’ll pick up the phone and call someone. The more we can keep in touch, the closer we can be to BNI.” Swentko, a Hammond native who attended St. John Bosco School, worked with her lifelong best friend and classmate, Kathy Benko, to make their reunion memorable, and were soon invited by Mary Ellen O’Neill, director of advancement, to get involved in BNI’s Big Event fundraiser.

“We came to a meeting and had a ball,” Swentko said. “We helped set up the decorations and picked up raffle items, and have been helping every year since. I try to pop up and help with other events, too.”

O’Neill couldn’t be happier. “Wallene is the best volunteer, she has endless energy,” Noll’s fundraising planner said.

Swentko is a true believer in Catholic education. She earned a history degree from St. Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1967 and went on to work as a teacher and assistant principal at Catholic schools throughout the south suburbs.

O’Neill calls Swentko “a good ambassador for the school. She is always talking up Noll, and as an educator, she’s perfect for the board. I talk to her weekly, and she came up with ideas to increase ‘sales’ of our auditorium seats.”

Swentko said she concentrates her volunteer efforts at Noll because “this is where I felt I could do the most good. I tell my classmates, ‘We left as seniors, and now we’re coming back as seniors.’”

Jack and Helene Doyle Wellman asked, “how did 1939 freshmen get so old?” Jack celebrated 92 years in mid-November and Helen celebrated her 92nd birthday in February. “We cherish our memories of four years at Catholic Central High School. Our wartime class has scattered to the four winds, however our impact on the world is everlasting,” they wrote.

Jeanette Bell Klisiak still lives in the area and has a happy family with six children, 15 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Charles Coddington and his wife recently moved to the Fort Wayne, Ind., area to be closer to their daughter.

Gene Pasztor said he has been blessed many times over. After high school, he spent four years in the air force, married Ramona and graduated from college with her and their three children. They had two more children and he earned a master’s degree. After 23 years of marriage with Ramona, who is now deceased, he was blessed again with now 36 years of marriage to Rita. “Angels keep coming to me, rest in peace all my deceased classmates and God bless and keep the rest of us as He plans our future.”

Sharon Magurany Mannion and her husband, Mike, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Aug. 18. They had a beautiful personal Mass with Father Dennis Blaney at Sharing Meadows. “He honored us with breakfast by his own hands and then a gathering with all his special angels at the facility. How blessed we are.”

They also attended a special group Mass at St. Mary Cathedral in Lafayette, Ind. It was followed by a get together. They were the second longest married couple in years, she writes. They are looking forward to the next 60 years.

Rita Cipowski Ritchie enjoyed seeing the Bishop Noll Choir concert performance this winter at Hartsfield Village, where she lives. Rita was the 1952 Marquette

yearbook editor and gave some tips to current yearbook editor senior Mayra Pena, left. She noted that she and her five siblings all attended Noll. Following graduation, she worked as a bookkeeper in the medical field and raised two children with her husband, Bill, who is now deceased.

Leroy F. Cataldi P.D. retired as a doctor of pharmacy. Leroy had pharmacies in Indiana and Illinois and now lives in Florida.

Stephen Perry is living in Mercer Island, Wash. He writes that he continues to be thankful for the excellent education that BNI afforded him, especially in his Catholicism. “In today’s world, a strong belief in a future life and a merciful God is great comfort and provides outstanding guidance in making important decisions.”

Since 2007, Bob Hirsh and his wife, Marilyn, have been doing Holy Communion service weekly for Catholics residing at Tacoma Lutheran Retirement Center in Washington. They are also active volunteers to St. Charles Borromeo School where they are parishioners and their youngest granddaughter is a student.

1960

Kathleen Carol is retired and enjoying her family, grandchildren and many church ministries.

Kathleen successfully completed a spiritual direction program through the Cenacle of Our Lady of Divine Province School of Spirituality in association with the Franciscan University of Steubenville.

Willie Kingsley fondly remembers his days at Noll and praises the teachers, administrators and coaches who had a profound impact on his life. Fathers Zimmerman and Casey and Sister Cecil Marie greatly prepared his generation, he writes. “Few days pass that I don’t reflect on their wise and profound wisdom that was passed on.”

Sister Angeline Benz had a great time at the Class of 1966 reunion this fall “thanks to the generosity and kindness of some of the students.” That was her last year teaching math at Noll, she writes, and said it was a great class.

Raúl Curiel reports that he recently retired.

Tom Pancheri visited BNI in January to serve as a judge in the first high school speech competition held at Noll in many years. He said he was thrilled to come home and give back to the place that played such a significant role in his own personal development, and also to learn from such accomplished students who participate in speech. Tom also took a memorable walk across the same theater stage on which he performed while at Noll.

Kenneth Wilk is a senior attorney with the law firm of Rubino, Ruman, Crosmer & Polen in Dyer.

He currently serves on the boards of the Advisory Board of Catholic Charities, Humane Society Calumet Area, Lakeshore Public Media, Legacy Foundation and Lakeshore Chapter of IU Alumni Association. He was named 2016 Dyer Business Person of the Year.

Tony Kolodzicj graduated with a M.S. in geochemistry in 1974 and worked as a geologist for 42 years.

Dr. Marsha Hajduch King was recognized in September as the Northwest Indiana education community’s Influential Woman of the Year, one of 22 women in various industries honored for making a significant impact.

A leader in the local nursing education arena, Dr. King is the dean of the Crown Point campus of the University of St. Francis.

Kathy (Mary Kathleen) Mahoney Gortat retired in January 2015 from Doctors Pharmacy, having worked there for 41 years. She owned the business with her husband, David, for 25 of those years. They have two children: Jonathan and Heather, who are both Purdue University graduates.

U.S. district court Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel spoke to Bishop Noll students during our Thanksgiving Mass and shared his pride for the Bishop Noll and East Chicago communities. Curiel has agreed to give the commencement address for the Class of 2017.

1973

Anita Kozlowski was recognized in September as the Northwest Indiana business community’s Influential Woman of the Year, one of 22 women in various industries honored for making a significant impact. Anita is vice-president of sales for the Hammond-based Screw Conveyor Corporation.

Alums in the classroom

Terry Murphy ’75 spoke about the world of energy and energy storage to Noll's AP Environmental Science class. Terry is president and CEO of the Hammond Group (hmndgroup. com), a specialty manufacturer that uses lead-acid battery technology for advanced energy storage applications.

Prior to joining the Hammond group, Terry worked for Rocketdyne, where he helped develop the space shuttle’s main engine, as well as introducing a feasible, cost-effective solar concentration power plant to the energy industry.

Dave Dolak ’76 visited science classes at Bishop Noll in October.

Dave spoke to the students about the geology of the Calumet Region, including the continental divide that used to run through Cedar Lake. He also demonstrated how we can see AND hear sound waves and let the students play some of his handmade musical instruments.

“Every year I enjoy coming to Noll to give back to the place that gave me so much; a great education, great friends, and a solid preparation for life and work. The students are always great to work with and, as when I was here, the teachers show a special dedication to the important calling of teaching to create an atmosphere of respect and spiritual community.”

Dave is a senior lecturer in the Department of Science and Mathematics at Columbia College Chicago. He teaches Historical Geology, Environmental Science and Physics of Musical Instruments.

1976

Barbara Jackowski Opperman enjoyed her four years at Noll and recently had fun reuniting and celebrating with her classmates during their 40th reunion in September.

Pat Ader and Mary Kay Simmons Ader had a great time this September at the BNI Class of 1976 40th reunion. They said it was nice to catch up with old friends and make a few new ones.

They have seven children together and just welcomed their seventh grandchild on Thanksgiving morning. “We are truly blessed,” they wrote.

1979

Argusta Gilmore Bennett wrote to let us know she lost her favorite sister, Debra A. Gilmore ’73. “She was the reason I went to Noll,” Argusta wrote. “She always spoke highly of Noll and I too have fond memories of going there.”

1981

Karyn Pyrzynski Moreland has worked with Fairfax County, Va., as a civil engineer for nearly 27 years. She is blessed to work alongside her husband, Ken, who is also a civil engineer with the

county for the past 30 years. They have two wonderful children who are both special education teachers and three granddaughters. They are expecting grandchild No. 4 in summer 2017.

Mark Skertic is a Chicago-based director and lead investigator for Berkeley Research Group's strategic intelligence practice. A former newspaper reporter and editor, Mark and his wife, Alison, live in Munster and have two daughters.

1987

David O’Connor celebrated 25 years in business of O’Connor Casting Company. He has been married to Kelsey and they have two amazing kids – Dahlia and Jude. They live in Chicago.

Doreen Olguin Flores received a B.S. in management from Calumet College of St. Joseph in 2000. She went on to receive her master of arts and liberal studies in 2013 from Valparaiso University. She works as an executive assistant in Campus Ministries and Church Vocations at VU since 2007.

Doreen is married to Arturo Flores and they have three children: Gabriela, 20; Jacob, 11; and Ava, 5.

1994

Jaime Cavazos teaches dual credit US History, Government, AP Government and US History at his alma mater, Bishop Noll. He is also a speech team coach and tech director for theater.

He previously worked in human resources consulting but said teaching was always what he wanted to do and he teaches at Noll, “To give back to the institution that helped lay the foundation for successful educational and professional careers.”

As a high school student, Mr. Cavazos said he was shy, quiet and focused on academics. His favorite teachers were social studies teachers John Trafny and Larry Bentley.

He said that what makes Noll special in 2017 is the diversity of the student body and “the dedication and passion of my colleagues, not just in my department, but in the school as a whole.”

1998, 1999

Julie Kmak ’99 and G. William Szany ’98 are proud to announce the birth of their baby girl Abigail Laura Szany on Dec. 17, 2016. Her older sisters Hailey, 10, and Emiley, 8, were excited to greet her as well.

2000

Michael Cierski married Rossi this fall at St. Victor Church in Calumet City. Their reception took place at the Halls of Justice in Crown Point. The couple met six years ago on Christmas Eve in the choir at St. Victor. They enjoy road trips together including Route 66, Iron Mountain Road in South Dakota and Tennessee country. They also share a love of motorcycles, hiking and adventure.

“We love family and friends that keep us going. We got engaged in South Dakota, during our trip in the Black Hills, near Mt. Rushmore,” Mike wrote.

Malory Rokosz Cap and her husband, Jon, welcomed Jaxon Emmett on June 3.

Olivia Rokosz Marcket and her husband, Aaron, welcomed Gianna Rose on Sept. 9.

2012

Stephanie Rarick showed the Bishop Noll spirit of giving when she received a $5,000 tip during the Cubs winning season and shared it with her co-workers! Rarick is a manager at DraftKings club, a patio bar attached to Wrigley Field. The story of the tip made it all the way to the Chicago Sun-Times.

2013

Traci Anderson plans to help others by pursuing a career in nursing and is currently working on obtaining her BSN at Indiana Wesleyan University. She has known she wanted to make a difference since she was a student at Bishop Noll. Traci hopes to stay at Indiana Wesleyan to complete her master of science degree in nursing.

Our Advancement Team has hit the road this year to meet with Bishop Noll alumni around the country.

Stops have included the Western suburbs of Chicago, Indianapolis and most recently, California and Florida. We hope to make it to a city near you soon.

Bishop Noll Class of 1967 will celebrate its 50th reunion the weekend of June 23, 24 and 25, 2017. On June 23, there will be an informal get together at House of Pizza. Classmates attended the BNI Tailgate Friday night, followed by dinner at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts on Saturday.

Bishop Noll Class of 1986 held a reunion weekend in conjunction with Homecoming. Classmates met at the Tailgate party Friday night and had a formal reunion Saturday night at Willis Tower in downtown Chicago.

Bishop Noll Institute’s Environmental Science students enjoyed a canoe adventure around Wolf Lake during a special field trip in September.

The Canoe Mobile came as part of Wilderness Inquiry, a nonprofit organization that connects people to the natural world through shared outdoor experiences. Students learned canoe safety and paddling techniques before taking off. They also met with National Park Service rangers for a discussion about the natural surroundings and job opportunities with the service.

“I hope the students look back on the experience with fondness and continue to enjoy the outdoors,” said Noll’s AP Environmental Science teacher, Rosalie Schmidt ’70.
