Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God, Teach me true generosity. Teach me to serve you as you deserve. To give without counting the cost, To fight heedless of wounds, To labor without seeking rest, To sacrifice myself without thought of any reward Save the knowledge that I have done your will. Amen. Report 2015-2016 School Year

president’s letter Dear BNI Family,

OUR MISSION

Bishop Noll Institute, a diverse, Catholic college preparatory school, partners with local faith communities to empower young adults to live their faith in Christ through ministry, scholarship and leadership. STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Almighty and ever-faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other. Filled with desire, we respond to Your call for discipleship by shaping our lives in imitation of Christ. We profess that the call requires us to be stewards of Your gifts. As stewards, we receive Your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner, share them in practice and love with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. We pledge to our ongoing formation as stewards and our responsibility to call others to that same endeavor. Almighty and ever-faithful God, it is our fervent hope and prayer that You who have begun this good work in us will bring it to fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen

In recent months, I’ve had a close-up view as we removed the long-unused, 70-year-old “A” Building to make room for future campus upgrades as we prepare for tomorrow’s Bishop Noll Institute. I, too, have fond memories of my days as a student in that grand structure, and I still maintain contact with a couple of the great teachers I was blessed with in that building. Observing the demolition, though sentimental in some regards, served to remind me of my schoolboy days and reinforced my appreciation of the great foundation I was blessed to receive here at Bishop Noll. As I watched the old bricks and mortar from the “A” Building crumble, I retained great satisfaction in knowing the real rock-solid construction at Noll, the true foundation of our school, is what takes place day-in, day-out in our classrooms, chapel, hallways, labs, cafeteria, gyms, on our playing fields and on retreat. Just as it was when that building was erected in 1946 (and when six classrooms were added in 1954), we remain deeply committed to providing a Christ-centered college prep education that empowers our young adults to live their faith in Jesus through ministry, scholarship, and leadership. We remain committed to ensuring that affordable, Catholic education remains a staple in this region and that BNI remains a bedrock in making a difference in shaping the lives of young men and women. That is our mission. And it remains strong. In fact, many of the highlights from 2015-16, our 95th school year, would signify that BNI is growing stronger each year: • a 14-year enrollment high; • state recognition of BNI as an A-rated, Four-Star school; • year No.2 of the only high school STEM program in northern Indiana under the guidance of STEM education experts from Purdue University; • college scholarship awards totaling $7.88 million to graduating seniors; • the sixth straight growth year in Annual Fund and total giving by our generous benefactors. I could continue, but I think you get the picture that today’s Bishop Noll is strong, vibrant and difference-making. Every year, more of our alumni make a difference in their communities, their parishes, their workplaces, their world, extending the BNI influence locally and beyond. What a bright future we have with more students from Bishop Noll poised to lead the way. I thank all of you—generous alumni, other benefactors, partners in the Diocese of Gary, and our amazing faculty and staff—who continue to make what we do possible for the young men and women who are our future. We are greatly indebted to all of you listed in this Annual Report. We have 95 years in the books, and much reason to be optimistic about BNI’s future. Mark your calendars for Sept. 16, 2021, the 100th anniversary of the opening of our school as Catholic Central. On that Thursday night five years from now, we will have much to celebrate, and we will do so in grand fashion. With your prayers and generosity, we will continue to seek bold outcomes and be a beacon for local families. And when looking back on our past, we’ll appreciate that sentimental moments such as building demolitions truly were signs of progress. God bless,

Paul B. Mullaney ’77 President

highlights of 2015-2016 Bishop Noll Institute completed its 95th year as Northwest Indiana’s premier Catholic high school. With the addition of 163 freshmen in the Class of 2019, our enrollment remains strong. The Class of 2016 included 119 graduates, 12 of whom were named Graduates with Distinction, seniors who earn a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher through the first semester of senior year. BNI, which received an “A” rating from the Indiana Department of Education, continues to make strides in academic excellence through its college prep curriculum. For the second time in three years, Bishop Noll Institute was named a Four Star School by the Indiana Dept. of Education. The designation, announced May 24, 2016, is for the 2014-15 school year. It means Bishop Noll ranked in the upper 25 percent of schools in the state in two categories of the ISTEP tests and in the state’s school accountability system, which measures student academic performance.

Bishop Noll welcomed new faculty and staff members and said good-bye to long-serving teacher John Trafny who retired at the end of the school year after 32 years at BNI. Students got involved in the National Geographic Geno 2.0 Project with the help of science teachers Becky Dostatni ’00 and Rosalie Schmidt ’70. Students from their classes were randomly selected to have their DNA sequenced as a way to learn about genetics and evolution. In February, the selected students used a swab to collect cheek cells from the inside of their mouths. Results were used for students to see a connection between DNA and ancestry. Freshmen theology students learned the Stations of the Cross in a new way as they created artistic collages depicting each station. These were displayed around the building and freshmen visited each one, praying and studying the journey.

Mass Media and Journalism students, taught by Marisa Renwald, continued to bring the news to students through media announcements and newspaper. They wrote, filed and edited newscasts and newspapers for their classmates, learning what it’s like to be in the media in the 21st century. Students could stay in touch with school, local and world news and see the world through different filters and fellow students’ voices. Inside the building, a renovation of the boys’ locker room was completed thanks to dozens of alums and donors who provided funding over the course of three years. The 53-year-old lockers were replaced and the room received new paint, lighting, flooring and ductwork. Bishop Noll students continue to shine in extracurricular activities in addition to their success in the classroom. On March 12, 2016, the boys’ basketball team played in regionals, the dance team competed at state, and the speech team competed at state. For many students, this is a typical weekend: academics, athletics and the arts. The BNI band, under the direction of Rocco Carioto, performed at football and basketball games as well as school Masses. They also attended competitions, parades and a veterans’ memorial dedication. In February, 12 BNI band students competed at the annual ISSMA state solo and ensemble competition and all 12 received gold or silver medals for their performances. Our BNI choir, under the direction of David Herr, had a busy year. In addition to beautiful music performed at many school liturgies, they also shared their gifts at several locations throughout the community. In September, members led the music at Sunday Mass at St. Mary of the Lake in Gary, where Bishop Melczek is currently pastor. In addition, they performed at Hartsfield Village in Munster, Hegewisch Senior Living in Chicago, St. Michael’s School in Schererville, St. Mary’s School in Griffith and St. Thomas More school in Munster. A Christmas concert and spring concert rounded out their year. In addition, Noll’s Drama Department presented two successful productions, “Antigone” and “High School Musical.”

Bishop Noll students displayed their strong Catholic faith with many service projects throughout the year. National Honor Society partnered with Heartland Blood Center to host four blood drives and the Multicultural Club posted inspirational quotes around the building on Nov. 13—World Kindness Day. The annual Thanksgiving Food Drive generated more than 4,400 food items donated by students, faculty and staff. Those items filled two Warrior Wagon buses and were delivered by our students to the St. Joseph’s Soup Kitchen in downtown Hammond, in time to help feed those who were in need at Thanksgiving. Students also supported the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana by collecting more than 1,950 jars of peanut butter during the annual Peanut Butter Drive. On March 14, also known as Pi(e) Day, the Math Club sold pies and donated the proceeds to Noll House. For Noll House, Bishop Noll’s Lenten charity, students collected funds to build a house in a developing country for the cost of $3,500. This year, the house was dedicated to the late Mr. Larry Bentley. Many exciting events happened in athletics this year. The following teams were named IHSAA Class 2A sectional champions: girls’ volleyball, girls’ basketball, boys’ tennis, boys’ soccer, boys’ basketball and baseball. The girls’ volleyball team was the regional champion. Ameer Lawrence was a semi-state qualifier in bowling and Shana Cooper was a state qualifier in track and field. During track finals, she placed 7th in the 100-meter dash and 8th in the 200-meter dash On Saturday, Dec. 5, former Bishop Noll football standout Mike McGill was on hand at BNI to present the school with a commemorative golden football from the NFL as the league celebrated the 50th Super Bowl. McGill, a 1964 graduate of Noll, played for the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. Due to his Super Bowl participation, Bishop Noll was inducted into the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll.

“Just Dance!” was the theme of homecoming, sponsored by Student Council. The highlights of the week were the Friday night football game, annual tailgate and homecoming dance. Spirit week led up to the Friday night football game and was marked by various dress up days such as class color day and the creative Superhero/Disney princess day. The classes engaged in the annual “Penny War” for charity. More than 600 alumni and friends attended the BNI Homecoming Tailgate party—one of the most anticipated alumni events of the year! Friends enjoyed a buffet dinner, a beer garden and a great DJ playing oldies from the ’60s to the current hits. Most importantly, the evening was an opportunity to reconnect with old friends. Many reunion classes kicked off their reunion weekend at the tailgate party. Alums arrived early to decorate their tables with balloons, glitter and old photos! The Big Event, now in its second year, took place April 29 in the BNI fieldhouse. The largest single-day fundraiser, which replaced the Emporium, raises money to support student scholarships. Many alumni and friends came out for a night of food, drinks, dancing, raffles, live auctions and contests as well as a photo booth with vintage and current Noll gear. More than $53,000 was raised.

The Mary Whelan Golf Invitational took place in June at Briar Ridge Country Club and raised funds for BNI building projects. Chaired by Lori ’85 and Mike ’85 Whelan, this outing started as an idea in 2012 to raise enough money to remodel the auditorium that needed a redo after 50-plus years of use. In July, the Bishop Noll Annual Golf Invitational at Innsbrook Country Club brought together about 100 alumni and friends for a day of fun and camaraderie. Together, sponsors, donors and golfers assisted in contributing more than $13,000 for the BNI Scholarship Fund and began a scholarship in memorial of golf coach Dennis Koliboski who passed away suddenly in February 2016.

Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share. —Timothy 6:18

For it is in giving that we receive. —Saint Francis of Assisi

Bishop Noll provides life-changing opportunities for students as they walk through life’s journey. Kairos, an intensive four-day retreat for juniors, incorporates personal talks from peer and adult leaders, small and large group discussions and periods of silence and reflection. In addition, various integrated prayer experiences and the Sacraments invite teens to more seriously discover God in all things. Kairos takes place three times a year at LaSalle Manor, a retreat center in Plano, Ill. Mary Ellen O’Neill Director of Advancement moneill@bishopnoll.org 219.932.9058 ext.1002
