a letter from the principal Dear BNI Alumni and Supporters, The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time and this year is no different. The anticipation and preparation to plan and execute opening our doors to more than 600 students is always exciting! We held a groundbreaking ceremony for our future outdoor facilities, and we are putting the finishing touches on a fully renovated band room and an outdoor café. As grand as all this exciting news is to share, as a principal I also work to stay grounded in what we do!

When BNI opened more than a century ago, its mission was to spread the Gospel and Word of Jesus Christ and to fill His kingdom. Today, as we open the doors, we greet every single one of our students with that same mentality.

Our mission today reads…

Bishop Noll Institute, a Catholic high school, forms disciples as we set the standard for academic excellence in college preparatory education, embracing students of all faiths and cultures in a safe and welcoming environment.

As a supporter of BNI, you are part of this mission. Every student I greet on the first day is part of this mission. These young adults continue this mission as they strive to be young disciples. When that bell rings, my teachers are ready to engage and challenge them academically. My student service staff works hard to prepare opportunities outside of the classroom, securing college visits, setting up internships and helping students see a future career for adulthood. We as a BNI staff do all of this while maintaining a nurturing and safe environment. Yes, education has evolved in the last century but today, as we open the doors to the Class of 2027, we are doing it with the intention to spread the Gospel and to fill His Kingdom.

As a BNI supporter, thank you for supporting us in continuing this mission to serve young adults in Northwest Indiana. Please continue to keep Bishop Noll in your prayers and thoughts as we kick off our new school year. Pray for our students that they might listen to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Pray for our teachers that they might model Our Lord's teachings in words and actions. And if you wouldn’t mind, pray for me and my leadership team as we strive to improve everything we do to best serve our students and, most importantly, Our Lord.

Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick ’01 said top-notch athletic facilities are important to the families of today.

“They want to see a beautiful space where their kids can grow outside of the classroom,” Pastrick said.

“The reality is sports play is an integral part of the growth and development of students, an important part in growing leaders and young disciples.”

Turning dreams into reality

Bishop Noll leaders, joined by the Most Rev. Robert J. McClory, bishop of the Diocese of Gary, broke ground June 20 on the first major renovation of the school’s outdoor athletic facilities in 60 years.

The initial phase of the renovation—carrying a price tag of $4.5 million and scheduled to be completed by summer 2024— calls for a new turf field for football and soccer, the addition of a regulation eight-lane track, plus bleacher seating and lighting.

“It has been a goal of the Bishop Noll administration and school board to renovate our outdoor athletic fields, most components of which are no longer competitive with the standards of high schools today,” BNI President Paul Mullaney ’77 said.

“For the past 12 years, we have made numerous and strategic improvements inside our school building to provide our students with the best possible tools and facilities to excel in the classroom,” he said. “Now it’s time to turn our attention outside to the facilities that serve as an extension of the classroom. Funding the future

Funding for the first phase of the athletic fields project has been secured, thanks to a $500,000 gift from the Diocese of Gary, revenues from the recent Ignite & Inspire capital campaign, the annual Mary Whelan Memorial Golf Outing, and other donations and funding streams.

The project’s subsequent phases—to include multiple buildings for restrooms, concessions, locker rooms and storage, plus a new softball field and other amenities—also is likely to cost $4.5 million, funding for which a capital campaign called Fielding Our Future has begun.

Your gift will double thanks to $500,000 matching grant, launch of BNI 300 Club With generous support from a committed Bishop Noll donor, gifts to the Fielding Our Future campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $500,000. This benevolent gesture will help us launch the 300 Club of donors as the primary funding source for the remainder of the project.

We are seeking at least 300 donors to make gifts of $10,000 or more (payable over 1, 2 or 3 years) to the Fielding Our Future campaign.

Donors in this 300 Club will, upon completion of payment, receive a lifetime pass to BNI regular-season athletic events and permanent recognition on the new facility’s concession stand structure.

Damien Harmon ’96 tells graduates: Believe in yourself and enjoy the ride 2

For its 100th graduation ceremony, BNI welcomed home a commencement speaker who lives as a Warrior in mind, body and soul.

Damien Harmon ’96 serves as senior executive vice president of customer, channel experiences and enterprise services for Best Buy Co. Inc., the leading consumer electronics retailer in North America. Harmon, a star athlete at Noll who later played professional football in

the NFL Europe League, credits Noll with helping him find his spiritual path during his high school years. He has continued to follow that path through his professional and philanthropic work.

President Paul Mullaney ’77 introduced Harmon by saying, “In the fall of 1992, a young boy from the Glen Park neighborhood in Gary entered the doors here at 1519 Hoffman Street as a freshman.

Even though he made his mark here at Bishop Noll in many ways, most notably as a standout on the football field, nobody could predict how he would rise through the ranks of the corporate world.

“At Augustana University in South Dakota and even for a brief while playing professional football in the NFL Europe league, he made a name for himself as a running back. But the way he has continued to move the chains after his football career has been equally if not more impressive.”

In addition to playing a lead role on the Best Buy team, Harmon has held executive positions at companies like Sprint PCS and Bridgestone Tires. He has worked in the United States, Europe and Asia. In recent years, Harmon and his wife, Katy, invested in his boyhood home of Gary by supporting the Best Buy Teen Tech Center—at the John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Club—through their Damien and Katy Harmon Foundation.

A father of six who now lives near Nashville, Harmon said the spiritual journey at Noll and the connections to people that he made at BNI was what most affected him in high school.

Dr. Joe Majchrowicz ’73 received a special farewell at commencement as he retired this summer as superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Gary.

Daniela Giron came to the U.S. from Guatemala. Along with several BNI classmates, she will attend Holy Cross College on a full tuition scholarship to study biology. She hopes to become a doctor.

“Being able to find myself was a great connection to the rest of my life,” he said.

Harmon encouraged students to learn how to leverage and maximize their power, saying that Bishop Noll is the first step in that journey.

“The reality is I have a dream job,” said Harmon, adding that as a youth, he did not have high expectations.

“I was told on my life journey that I wasn’t college material. I was also told I wouldn’t amount to much. Not only did I prove them wrong, but my family and I opened that Teen Tech Center in Gary, Indiana and here’s the great thing about it: That was a six-figure personal commitment from a guy who they said wouldn’t amount to much and wasn’t college material. I never reduced my dreams to the level of my experiences, never, and I would challenge you to do the same…. Many people do not reach their full potential because they quit at the point of discomfort.”

Harmon ended by telling the Class of 2023, “Enjoy the ride, have fun and I’m always here to support you.

Congratulations.”

Jacob Cardenas, who will attend Indiana University Bloomington, read a thank you from the Class of 2023 to their families.

Salutatorian Hannah Evenson will continue her volleyball career at Aurora University on an athletic scholarship while studying actuarial science and finance.

In her commencement speech, she spoke about the Class of 2023’s four years of high school. “We have already accomplished so much and us being here today is our final achievement in this chapter and signifies us flipping the page to the next.”

Hannah is the daughter of Chuck ’83 and Mary Evenson.

Jackson Montgomery sings “It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.” He will attend Coppin State University on an athletic scholarship and continue his baseball career.

Luke Buksa, son of Dan ’84 and Julie Buksa, has joined the U.S. Army.

Sarah Acuahuitl will attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Ayanna Wash, Bishop Noll’s first Black valedictorian, will attend Marian University in Indianapolis to study biology.

“Noll is a beautiful opportunity, and we’re also a family,” she said in her commencement address.

“There are so many wonderful people you come in contact with and learn from.”

Wash described the past four years to her classmates as a “wild ride, but we did it all together.”

Thank you to all the Bishop Noll parents, grandparents and loved ones who guided their students through their high school journeys. The dedication of the BNI Warriors and their families carries on a rich tradition that has sustained the school for more than 100 years.

The baccalaureate Mass took place June 1 at Holy Angels Cathedral with Bishop Robert J. McClory presiding. Assisting him were Deacon Martin Brown ’79, Deacon Michael Halas ’83 and Father Jeff Burton, BNI chaplain.

Q&A with Forever Noll author Terry McMahon Putz ’66 Q) What do you hope the book teaches current BNI students?

A) I hope the current BNI students read this and realize that

Noll was not the product of just one or two or even a handful of people. It was a collaborative effort of many people—some known and many unknown—who have contributed over the years, and it will be interesting to see how today’s students will contribute to the history and image of Noll today with their talents, hard work and dreams. This history book will show them whose shoulders they are standing on.

Q) What will alumni love about the history book?

A) I think alumni will love reading about the founding of Noll and

all that it involved and about all the obstacles that Catholic Central/ Noll had to overcome during its 100 years of existence. A look back at history always reveals little-known facts that tell so much about what made up the stories over the years.

The book features detailed coverage of every school year in Catholic Central and Bishop Noll history through 2021.

Q) What did you find most surprising while researching the book?

A) What I was most IMPRESSED by was the perseverance,

courage and determination of the founders of our school. The Mothers’ Club played such an amazing role in keeping the school running smoothly. Whatever was needed, they were there helping out, raising money, obtaining whatever items the school needed.

When the students and teachers ice skated in the winter, they were there to make lunch!

Q) If you could go back in history and interview any person featured in the book who is no longer alive, who would you meet and why?

A) I would love to interview (school founders) Sister Gonzaga and Father Schmid to hear first hand their stories about the beginning of Catholic Central. I have so many questions for them.

176 freshmen from 20 different zip codes in Indiana and Illinois officially became Warriors this August. BNI welcomed 131 Catholic freshmen and 22 legacy students in the class.

Mass Media students stayed busy this spring by creating professional video projects. (Pictured) Seniors Maria Emilia Quiroga and Lauren Drexler recorded interviews and put together a 3-minute video for the Catholic Foundation.

The regular Mass Media class completed two videos for the Indiana Non-Public Education Association that became imperative for the passing of the School Choice expansion bill. The first was a testimonial video of students that Principal Pastrick used in a meeting with INPEA. Junior Soriyah Casiano and sophomores Maximus Kubon and Kaylie Dowd were then invited to INPEA’s conference at Wicker Park in April to record educators and parents.

This footage was used by John Elcessor of INPEA, who sent it to senators after the bill was initially waived in hopes to get it passed— and it passed!

History lessons

New look

Thanks to a grant from the Hammond Community Corporation, students now have a comfortable and welcoming space when visiting with the Student Services department. Michael Roggenkamp, director of Student Services, applied for the grant to purchase games, paint and markers to create a large whiteboard, new seating, books and rugs for the office area. Now, this relaxing spot will allow students to decompress, reflect or just be mindful as they deal with the daily stresses.

Students in Annjannette Ortega's World History classes spent several weeks learning about genocide around the world. As part of the lesson, the class hung “bricks” (pieces of paper) with quotes of positivity. Why ‘bricks’? Because the Jewish ghettos were surrounded by tall brick walls to keep the Jewish people in and they were not allowed to interact with non-Jewish people. The BNI student bricks celebrated inclusion, acceptance, encouragement, freedom and tolerance.

“The class will have this wall in view throughout our remaining coverage of the Holocaust to keep positivity strong when we are learning about such a tragic historical event. It is important that young people know of such historical events and learn from them,” Ortega said.

The Drama Department staged “Little Shop of Horrors” in April with valedictorian Ayanna Wash in the lead role of Seymour and sophomore Maisie Wragg in the role of Audrey.

Two decades

Spanish language teacher Patricia AguilaCastellanos celebrated her 20th year at Bishop Noll at a recognition luncheon with Bishop Robert J. McClory and Superintendent of Schools Joe Machrowicz ’73. Mrs Aguila’s commitment established the Spanish Multicultural Club and the travel abroad program. For nine years, she served as the Senior Sponsor, on the Prom Committee, directed the food drive and was the graduation coordinator. Several years, she has traveled with student groups to Europe. She currently co-sponsors the Spanish National Honor Society and has been the World Language Department Chair for more than 15 years.

Q&A with business and finance teacher Mr. Pillar, the new state president of the Indiana Elks

Brian Pillar was named the state president of the Indiana Elks for the 2023–24 fraternal year.

He and his wife, Kathy, will travel the state this year to visit lodges and see the great things the Indiana Elks do in their communities. Pillar joined Hobart Lodge #1152 in February 1984, sponsored by his father, George.

Q) What do you enjoy about the Elks?

A) I enjoy the friendships that I’ve made since becoming an Elk,

Bishop Noll celebrated DNA Day in April with a chromosome hunt, DNA Day cookies, trivia and a raffle. DNA Day allows students, teachers and the public to learn more about genetics and genomics.

but what I really enjoy is being part of an organization that gives so much back to the community. In the last fiscal year, the Indiana Elks Association made charitable contributions in excess of $3.3 million. We sponsor youth sports activities, support local food pantries, create necessity bags for children entering foster care, support our Veterans and donate $260,000 to Indiana and Purdue Universities for Cancer Research. Those are just a fraction of the organizations that the 55 active Lodges in Indiana contribute to.

Q) Is there anything you’d like the Noll community to know about the Elks in general or your new role?

A) The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is second only to the federal government in granting scholarships to high school seniors. The Most Valuable Students Scholarship Fund is accepting applications now through November 13. More information can be found at elks.org/scholars.

Q) What are your goals as president?

A) My goal as State President is to unify our Lodges as a state

association. There needs to be more communication throughout our organization. I would also like to see our local lodges do a better job of informing the community of what we do. We need more publicity to help our organization grow. The more we grow, the more we can do for the community.

Profile of a Warrior: Ceramics student creates award-winning pieces of artwork

Isabelle Taillon has a talent for ceramics, and her pieces have been displayed throughout the Region. At the South Suburban College Regional High School Art Exhibit this winter, Isabelle’s ceramic teapot set won two awards.

“It made me very very happy to see my items on display and out there for people to see,” Taillon said.

Ceramics is a popular course at BNI. Students have put the new kiln in the STREAM Lab to good use by creating pinch bowls, coil pots, slab boxes and more. Students then apply all of the techniques they learn throughout the course with a final project of their choice.

sports Ringing endorsement

The 3A state championship hockey team players received their championship rings this summer.

Great start

A boys’ volleyball team, coached by longtime girls’ volleyball coach David Rodriguez, formed this year and went on to win Sectionals.

Although boys’ volleyball is not an official IHSAA sport, it is considered an emerging sport.

In June, student athletes, along with 900 students from across the state, participated in the IHSAA Student Leadership Conference at Plainfield High School. Not only did the Warriors get the chance to make connections and workshop with other athletic leaders, but they also had the opportunity to meet and learn from renowned guest speakers such as Harvey Alston (pictured) and Missy West.

Meet the coach—Brian Kim

Brian Kim has started his first year at BNI, coaching cross country and track & field. In addition, he is now teaching world history.

“There is a strong sense of family here,” he said. “I love the strong alumni base that is heavily involved with the school.”

An avid runner himself, Kim has run five marathons: Indianapolis, Chicago twice, Eugene, and Boston. He has a bachelor’s degree in economics from IUPUI and a teaching license from IUN. What do you see as the potential for BNI’s program?

There is a lot of potential for our cross country/track and field programs here at Bishop Noll. There is a lot of excitement among our current cross country athletes. The kids have worked hard all summer and expect to be competitive at the conference, sectional, and regional level. We are always looking to add more people to our roster.

Such a large percentage of our student population is involved in other sports. Track and field is an opportunity for them to get faster and stronger for their other sports.

Track and field can also provide extra exposure in terms of college recruiting. I see a lot of fantastic athletes in our building. The sky’s the limit for the program.

What are your goals for the teams?

Our main goal is to develop driven, dedicated, and hard working individuals who can excel on the cross country course/track and in the classroom. We have several standout athletes who have the ability to earn all conference status, finish high at sectionals, and compete at regionals for a chance at the state meet.

What impresses you about the athletes so far?

What impresses me the most is the character of our athletes.

The athletes are very respectful, driven, and hard working. They balance academics, extracurriculars, and home life. They definitely have a full plate and this will prepare them well for life after high school.

Track & Field Warrior Congratulations to Precious Knight ’23, who was a state qualifier in high jump and competed June 3 at the State Finals in Bloomington.

Fall seasons start strong

The football team snapped a 17-game losing streak on Aug. 18, defeating South Bend Clay 30–18. The Warriors were led by sophomore running back Elijah Boone, who rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Jaydin Rivers threw for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and senior wide receiver Angel Alvarez caught three passes for 90 yards.

The girls’ volleyball team started the fall 2023 season with high expectations. In their first game of the season on August 16, they beat Valparaiso for the first time in coach Dave Rodriguez’s tenure.

Getting to know the BNI Advancement Department and its new director A Message From Ryan Julian, Director of Advancement Bishop Noll has been serving Hammond and the surrounding community for more than 102 years!

We have played a large role in positively influencing and uplifting more than 22,000 individuals of "the Region" and Southeast Chicagoland since 1921. The purpose of the BNI Advancement Department is to support the current and former Warriors who grace or have graced the halls of 1519 Hoffman St. We have a deep alumni and family base that supports our students with their treasure, their time and talents.

The Advancement Department is the conduit that connects current Warriors with Warriors of the past. Our team centers our focus around positively growing BNI through marketing, annual giving, scholarship funding, reunions, alumni, student events and fundraising.

Thanks to all of the Warriors who took part in the inaugural Central Indiana BNI Alumni event Aug. 5 at Conner Prairie in Fishers. Special thanks to Jay Viater ’82 for organizing the event, which had about 25 attendees total.

Warriors first enjoyed a visit to Top Golf and then enjoyed the music of TUSK, the ultimate Fleetwood Mac tribute band, at Conner Prairie. The group was recognized from the stage before the start of the concert!

Queen of Hearts game

Queen of Hearts debuted at BNI this winter as a fun way to help raise funds for the “Fielding Our Future” athletics facility fund.

The Queen of Hearts is a 50/50 progressive raffle where one winner is selected each week. That winner’s “slot number” is then revealed on the game board. If the card is the queen of hearts, the winner collects half of the total jackpot, splitting it with BNI. If the queen is not revealed, the winner takes home $250 (or $500 for a joker) and the game continues. As of press time, BNI is on its third board, after parent Renee Whelan’s number revealed the queen of hearts on the first board and Dave Surufka ’71 won $14,825 on the second board.

The Bishop Noll Alumni Association

As alumni have begun to reunite in several new ways, including geographical and social media groups forming, a new name was needed to show that alumni connections run deeper than just their class years. With that idea in mind, the Bishop Noll Alumni Association was born.

Jim and Lois Carlin Martin celebrated their 70th anniversary on June 27. The couple has four children: Jim, Sister Mary Beth, Linda and Mike.

“Finally we said, let’s go back and look at Congressional records. We started looking at bills presented by North and South.

They couldn’t even tell what day it was. That’s the part that’s relevant today. Neither side can agree… the ability to compromise has been one of the greatest things this country has ever had and they lost that.”

Mike Puskar and his wife have called Naples, Florida, home for the past 15 years. “The wife and I are very fortunate to be blessed with good health,” he writes.

1960

Robert Horn has written a book titled “The Miracle of War,” which focuses on the soldiers’ perspectives during the Civil War. After Noll, Horn worked as a banker for 35 years. As a retiree, he found a passion for history and began researching the book with his co-author, also a retired banker.

The pair wanted to find out the cause of the Civil War and spent months researching at the Library of Congress.

The book is available as a paperback or e-book through Amazon, Barnes and Nobles and at all major bookstores.

“It has some comedy in it. It’s a fictional novel but there are also things that actually happened,” Horn said. “I think it’s a good read.… We did one thing nobody has done in a Civil War book, we rated the generals solely based on their performance.”

Pamela Ann Greski Rose has retired as a registered nurse and is married to Gregory Rose.

Dave Dolak (below) visited BNI this spring to talk to students taking AP Environmental Science and anatomy. Dolak is a senior lecturer in the Department of Science and Mathematics at Columbia College Chicago.

He teaches Historical Geology, Environmental Science and Physics of Musical Instruments.

Congratulations to Carol Mullaney, who in April received the prestigious James E. Armstrong Award from the University of Notre Dame Alumni Association.

Pierogi Fest is advertised as a wacky, zany festival held the last full weekend of July in Downtown Whiting. East Chicago native Panek graduated from Purdue University Northwest with a degree in communications and works at WJOB/JEDtv in Hammond.

Panek took over the role from Matt Valuckis, a 1994 BNI grad, who hung up his pierogi suit to enjoy the fest with his kids.

2016

The award is conferred on an ND alum who has rendered distinguished service to the University while under its employ.

Currently a senior director in ND’s Office of the President, Carol was hired by the University in 2010 as Director of Continuous Improvement. Seven years later, she assumed the role of Senior Director of Sustainability and Logistics, which she held until joining the President’s Office in 2021. Carol also has served as an instructor in ND’s Mendoza College of Business MBA program and for the Moreau First Year Experience.

During the 2020–21 academic year, she provided leadership to several initiatives associated with the University’s response to COVID-19, ultimately becoming director of ND’s COVID Response Unit with oversight of the pandemic hotline, testing center, student compact compliance, contract tracing and housing teams.

A number of BNI classmates and friends attended Mass on Aug. 15 in Chesterton to support seminarian Nicholas Emsing at

the top girls basketball scorer in the state of Indiana her senior year. Courtney is majoring in accounting.

Special visitor

It’s not every day that a great-grandnephew of Archbishop John Francis Noll pops into Bishop Noll Institute to check out the high school named after his famous relative. It happened Aug. 9 when Kevin Noll of Fort Wayne made a surprise visit to BNI to say hello and see the high school for the first time. BNI President Paul Mullaney and Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick were thrilled to hear some of the Noll family stories from Kevin, and they shared some of the anecdotes of Archbishop Noll’s major impact on the school that was founded in 1921 as Catholic Central and today bears his name. The photo was taken in front of the Archbishop Noll portrait that hangs in the school’s main office.

Doctor visit his Rite of Candidacy for Holy Orders, as he formally declared his commitment before the Church and Bishop Robert McClory to deepen his study and preparation for the priesthood. After spending the summer in Mexico studying the Spanish language, Nick this fall has continued his formation with theology classes at St. Francis de Sales Seminary near Milwaukee.

He earned his undergraduate philosophy degree at Simon Brute Seminary in Indianapolis. Nick is the son of Therese (Trojnar) ’71 and Alan Emsing ’69.

After graduating in May from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, Alexis Fortuna is now working as a manufacturing engineer in new product introduction at Cook Medical in Bloomington, Ind.

Courtney Blakely, after two seasons playing basketball at Middle Tennessee State, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023, transferred to the University of Arizona in Tucson to continue her basketball career. Courtney, BNI’s all-time scoring leader—boys or girls, was

On Aug. 26 in Indianapolis, a medical legend and a doctor-in-the-making— Bishop Noll graduates separated by 55 years—met one another and shared stories, insights, questions and answers related to the medical profession and pediatrics in particular.

Megan Sullivan, BNI’s 2018 valedictorian, is in her second year in Indiana University’s medical school. She was able to engage with Dr. Richard Schreiner, Class of 1963, about his many years as a neonatologist, including 22 years as physician-inchief at nationally renowned Riley Children’s Hospital, part of the IU Health system. The two were introduced by BNI President Paul Mullaney at the lifesize bronze statue of Dr. Schreiner, located near the Riley entrance, that honors his service to the medical profession in general and Riley Hospital in particular.

For two hours, Megan and Rich shared insights from the past, glimpses into the future, thoughts on the progress of medicine and sentimental stories about the beauty, rewards and heartaches of caring for such vulnerable child patients.

Sophomore theology work

As part of their education on the life, mission, and work of the Catholic Church, more than 130 BNI sophomores spent a day this spring interacting with the Most Rev. Robert McClory, bishop of the Diocese of Gary. Together, they explored ways to become better missionary disciples.

Junior theology teacher Johan Castañeda’s journey from Colombia to Diocese of Gary

All Noll juniors have something in common. They have Mr. Johan Castañeda as their theology teacher. Castañeda was born and raised in a small town in Colombia and is a native Spanish speaker. He completed his high school education in a minor seminary, and then proceeded to pursue religious life. However, he later discerned out of religious life and decided for diocesan life instead.

About halfway through his studies, he was invited to join a North American Diocese by a Colombian-American priest who himself was from Castañeda’s hometown.

“His diocese had been recruiting Spanish-speaking seminarians to assist with their growing Spanish-speaking parishioners,” Castañeda said. “In late August of 2008, I moved to the East Coast to engage in diocesan formation as I resumed my studies. First, I studied ESL, and then, I continued my undergraduate studies of philosophy and religion. I graduated in New Haven, Connecticut, in 2012.”

During this time, he began to wrestle for the first time with whether he felt called to a priestly ministry or to be an educator.

After four years of diocesan life in the East Coast, he moved to Chicago to continue discerning at Catholic Theological Union, a religious/lay graduate school of theology.

“Halfway through my self-funded MDiv program, I finally discerned out of the priesthood and decided for academia instead.

My interest in academia was always there,” he said. He graduated with his MDiv in the spring of 2015.

It was Castaneda’s CTU classmate, Father Kevin Scalf, C.PP.S, BNI’s chaplain at the time, who encouraged him to apply for a teaching position at Bishop Noll.

Junior Theology Lessons

“High School education was not originally my primary aim, yet it has become a true passion of mine.… St. Anselm of Canterbury is alleged to have said: ‘Faith seeks understanding.’ Contemporary young Catholics, unlike some older Catholics, seek to understand their faith, they wish to make sense of it. This challenges me every day to best equip students to understand and contextualize the Church teachings so as to better help them discern and apply the faith.”

Castañeda said Bishop Noll students, while similar to high school students everywhere, can excel in several areas and that the small school atmosphere helps them achieve great things.

“Every year, I meet outstanding young women and young men who are interesting and interested,” he said.

BNI’s junior theology students are introduced to the subjects of Christian morality and to the Sacraments.

In the fall semester, they gain a broad understanding of the roots and sources of Christian morality. They then apply the core unit ideas to case studies and stories by using concrete methods. Constant social issues, as in, immigration, the ongoing Ukrainian war, global political instability should challenge the ways Christian morality is perceived as well as how far it extends.

In the spring semester, the student learns to apply what they learned about Christian morality to each of the 10 Commandments. They then proceed to step into the Sacraments.

The junior theology curriculum is rich and truly exciting to teach as it allows the student and instructor to think critically, to think outside the box so as to meet unit and semester objectives.

Video prayer

A new morning tradition has started at BNI. Campus Minister Matt Pysh and his team wanted to do more to bring Scripture to Noll students on a daily basis, but they wanted to do it in a way that did not disrupt the school day. This is how “Good Morning Bishop Noll” was born. Teachers are asked to show a short YouTube video each morning that features a staff member or student reading the daily Gospel and sharing a short reflection.

“I hope it will be a great way for the school to begin each day focused on Jesus and His Word,” Pysh said.

Retreats offer Bishop Noll students the time, space, and context to reflect on their lives and grow as children of God. The busy pace of their lives and schedules often leave little to no time for prayer or self-reflection. Retreats allow them a few days to step away from the routine and examine it all. Students are required to take a retreat each year. The freshman class attended its first high school retreat Aug. 20 at Bishop Noll.

Sister Diane Marie Collins, a 1968 Bishop Noll graduate who later— from 1999 to 2002—served as BNI principal, was born into eternal life in August.

May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

WARRIORS TAKE IT TO NEXT LEVEL

The 2023 Bishop Noll football team— truly the Road Warriors this fall—made their way to Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts, for an August 26 game against Osceola Grace. The Warriors are playing a complete away-from-home schedule this fall because Noll’s outdoor athletic complex is being renovated.
