We regularly refer to all of our Bishop Noll Institute students, parents, alumni, faculty and staff—whether they’re in those roles currently, yesteryear or decades ago—as our BNI Family. It’s who we are, who we strive to be. Strong families, after all, show an appreciation and respect for each other. They are committed to the happiness, spiritual well-being and success of each other, and are prepared to make sacrifices to achieve those goals. And they do what they can to pave the way for the success of their next of kin, their dependents. It is their legacy, which they want to live on. And so it is with our Bishop Noll Family, celebrating our 100th school year in 2020-21. And what a legacy! I have learned much more about the early years of our school, founded as Catholic Central High School in 1921 by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ. Our Centennial History Committee, spearheaded by former English teacher Terry McMahon Putz ’66, has done tremendous ancestral research in tracing the genealogy of the Bishop Noll Family. The sacrifices made by the Sisters were many. And the blood, sweat and tears of many individual families helped create and grow a CCHS Family—our predecessors—that was determined to succeed and endure. Those efforts to deliver a Christ-centered, Catholic educational foundation as a bedrock for the Region’s youth, have withstood times of war, depression, recession, social strife, labor strife, terrorism, epidemic and, now, pandemic. During these 100 years, so many families have joined our BNI Family to make the same commitment as our predecessors. I hesitate to single any out, but I will mention two such families, because our committee’s work confirms these individuals have believed in and been engaged in our school’s mission for 100 years. Yes, from Year One through today. First is the Hoess Family. You’ll learn more about them when our committee’s work is published next summer, but a Hammond cobbler named Joseph Hoess, and his four adult sons, played a pivotal early role. They helped ensure classrooms were erected on the property BNI now occupies, so CCHS could move from St. Mary’s in East Chicago in Year One to the current property in Year Two. Those Hoess sons also sent their children to Catholic Central, and Joseph Hoess served as the school’s first business manager. Numerous children from the Hoess lineage attended CCHS/Bishop Noll, all the way to Katherine Jerge, our salutatorian in 2015, just five years ago. And to this day, members of the Hoess lineage remain invested in our students and our mission with their loyal support. The same has been shown by members of the Schreiner Family. When Catholic Central first opened its doors on Sept. 16, 1921, John L. and Henrietta Schreiner of Hammond had enrolled their oldest son, George, as one of 32 first-day freshmen (there also were eight sophomores). George was the first of 11 siblings who attended CCHS/Bishop Noll, and the first of dozens in the Schreiner lineage to attend. Still today, members of that Schreiner lineage remain loyal to BNI, sharing their treasure to invest in our BNI students and our mission. From Day One through today. Thank you to all of our BNI Family who have shared that same commitment for what being family calls us to do. Your support has enabled us to carry on the legacy at an A-rated school whose graduates—just as you did—go out in the world to do great things. Our family continues to grow as we pass the torch to our newest members. In August, we seated 147 freshmen—our largest incoming class in five years. I hope you agree that our freshmen, our next of kin, deserve the same BNI Family support we all received. I hope you’ll prayerfully consider investing in them by supporting BNI in our various initiatives. And I hope you’ll join us next Sept. 16 for our big Family Reunion, our birthday party for the ages. Happy birthday and God bless,
Paul B. Mullaney ’77 President Bishop Noll’s rich history is tied to members of the BNI Family. 1) The Bishop Noll Institute Class of 2020 2) The Catholic Central Class of 1928 3) John L. and Henrietta Schreiner (center) shown with their children and several of their grandchildren 4) The Hoess Brothers 5) Katherine Jerge, salutatorian from the Class of 2015, is the most recent graduate in a long line of Hoess family lineage.
highlights of 2019–2020 Bishop Noll Institute’s 99th school year included many traditional moments such as Homecoming, dances, all school Masses and student performances. It also included new innovations such as the opening of the new STREAM Lab and adapting to e-learning at home as the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic. Through it all, Warriors proved they have strength in mind, body and soul.
The Class of 2020 included 94 graduates, 13 of whom were named Graduates with Distinction, seniors who earn a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher. The class earned $8.7 million in college scholarships. To honor the Class of 2020’s accomplishments amid a pandemic, Bishop Noll held what could be considered the most unique graduation in BNI history on June 4. Rated an “A” School by the Department of Education, Bishop Noll boasts an advanced curriculum that includes 10 AP/DC classes and more than a dozen honors courses. Bishop Noll worked toward its commitment to be the first elite STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Math) high school in Northwest Indiana by unveiling the $1.45 million STREAM Lab in November. In January, the lab officially opened for classes, which included STEM for 8th graders and freshmen engineering classes. Other classes and clubs were also welcome to use the facility.
Students had more than 15 extracurriculars to choose from with academic teams such as Speech & Debate and Spell Bowl and clubs like Art Club, Biology Club and Yearbook. In addition to traditional groups like Drama Club, Color Guard and National Honor Society, new clubs emerged including the Women’s Empowerment Club, Ski Club and Ballet Folklorico. Bishop Noll Principal Mrs. Pastrick and Speech & Debate Coach Mr. Burgun were named National Speech and Debate Association Northwest Indiana District Administrator of the Year and Coach of the Year.
The Fine Arts Department continued to grow and develop the whole student. The Bishop Noll Band marched in several parades throughout Northwest Indiana and in downtown Chicago. In addition, the musicians presented a Christmas concert and performed at Masses, football and basketball games, and at pep rallies. The spread of the COVID-19 virus may have prevented large school events, like the spring concert and musical, from taking place in their traditional form this spring; but the Fine Arts Department pivoted to host virtual classes and rehearsals, with members signing on Zoom from home to take part in multiple practices every week. Noll’s Drama Department, under the direction of theater teacher Kayla Jones Konkle, showcased student talents on stage and behind the scenes with a production of the fall play “Fools.” While in the blocking phase of the spring musical, “Once Upon a Mattress,” school was closed. Although they tried to reschedule the musical, it was eventually canceled. Student talents were able to be showcased through online showings of the rehearsals of the production. In late spring, the Fine Arts Department hosted its first Virtual Fine Arts Weekend, which showcased instead, student talents in art, music and theater via Zoom and live streaming.
The largest extracurricular group at Bishop Noll continues to be Campus Ministry, which facilitates spiritual retreats and all-school Masses. Students build upon their Catholic faith through daily prayer, monthly Masses and theology classes. The annual Catholic Schools Week took place at the end of January and included spirit days and Catholic Schools Week Mass, where several hundred elementary students came to the BNI fieldhouse to celebrate Mass together. On March 11, the new Roman Catholic Diocese of Gary Bishop Robert McClory celebrated Mass with the Bishop Noll family. During the Mass, McClory addressed how grateful he is to be the new bishop of the “awesome” Diocese of Gary. Continued on next page
Highlights of 2019–20 continued
Students are required to participate in one retreat per year as a requirement for graduation. Juniors attend Kairos, a Greek word that means, “God’s time.” Kairos uses personal talks from peer and adult leaders, small- and large-group discussions, periods of silence and reflection, various integrated prayer experiences, and the Sacraments to invite teens to more seriously discover God in all things. The real value of Kairos occurs in living out the values of the retreat in one’s everyday life, so follow-up “Fourth Day Meetings” occur at school to sustain the impact of the retreat for all Kairos alumni. Kairos is held at LaSalle Manor, a retreat center in Plano, IL. Living their lives as true Disciples of Christ, the students also completed many service projects throughout the year. This year’s annual Bishop Noll Institute Thanksgiving food drive was the best it has been. Within a few short weeks, Bishop Noll students, teachers, and staff collected more than 10,000 canned goods, which was double the amount of cans donated last year. The cans were then donated to Saint Joseph Soup Kitchen in Hammond. To help replenish the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana with a staple item, Bishop Noll students collected more than 1,300 jars of peanut butter, greatly exceeding the goal of collecting 800 jars. In addition, Noll’s National Honor Society hosted and organized multiple blood drives during the year and Campus Ministry students visited senior citizens at the neighboring Albertine Home. The Bishop Noll Cheer Team volunteered at the Sparkle Station during Girls on the Run Northwest Indiana. The girls painted faces and helped runners go glam during the celebratory 5K run near Hammond’s Wolf Lake.
The BNI Athletic Department welcomed a new athletic director as Eric Roldan ’12 took the helm. In fall sports, the football team returned to a partial varsity schedule with plans to expand the varsity games into the 2020 season.
In winter sports, senior bowler Alexis Gonzalez qualified for regionals and semi-state. She also advanced to regionals for the third time in her high school career. In February, the boys basketball team won the Catholic Cup, defeating the Andrean 59ers. The Bishop Noll Hockey Team, a club sport that practices and plays at the KUBE Ice Arena, won the hockey state championship, the third in the program’s history. The Warriors defeated Valparaiso 2-1 at the Indiana State High School Hockey Association State 2A finals at Midwest Training and Ice Center in St. John. The Warriors won the state championship in hockey in 1988 under Coach Ed Hreha, retired Bishop Noll director of facilities, and in 2017 under Coach Sobilo. Spring sports had barely begun to practice when the season was brought to a halt and ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks to the help of generous alumni and friends, Bishop Noll fundraisers helped raise vital dollars for the Annual Fund. In July 2019, the Bishop Noll Annual Golf Invitational at Innsbrook Country Club brought together more than 80 alumni and friends for a day of fun and camaraderie. In September, students and alumni enjoyed Homecoming, which had the theme of “Fall” but felt more like winter as fans, players and the Homecoming court froze on the football field. Alumni headed to the warmth of the fieldhouse for the annual Tailgate Party – one of the most anticipated alumni events of the year! Friends enjoyed dinner, a beer garden and dancing. In April, The Big Event, the biggest fundraiser of the year had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 virus. The event pivoted into a virtual event, taking place in May and raising more than $70,000. With the generosity of alumni and friends sponsoring and bidding, the proceeds exceeded the event goal by more than $10,000.
The last few months of the 2019-20 school year showed exactly what Warriors were made of as they worked to overcome a year of unimaginable obstacles. In the end, they came together to continue learning, praying and supporting each other and their communities.

Ignite & Inspire honor roll As Bishop Noll’s Ignite & Inspire capital campaign draws to a close this year, we want to express our heartfelt appreciation to all of our BNI stakeholders who have helped us surpass the $2.3 million mark. The Ignite & Inspire campaign benefits BNI in three ways: funding our state-of-the-art STREAM Lab, providing upgrades to our outdoor athletic facilities, and establishing an endowment to assist our faculty in further educational pursuits. The Honor Roll lists all Ignite & Inspire donors for gifts received through June 30, 2020, the end of last fiscal year. It does not include amounts donors have pledged in total if the pledge includes gifts that extend beyond June 30, 2020. In 2021, we will publish a complete honor roll with the full value of pledged gifts. For more on Ignite & Inspire, contact our Advancement team at advancement@bishopnoll.org. We thank these donors for their belief in Bishop Noll and their generosity in helping secure the future of our school entering our second century.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER Almighty and ever-faithful Lord, gratefully acknowledging Your mercy and humbly admitting our need, we pledge our trust in You and each other. Filled with desire, we respond to Your call for discipleship by shaping our lives in imitation of Christ. We profess that the call requires us to be stewards of Your gifts. As stewards, we receive Your gifts gratefully, cherish and tend them in a responsible manner, share them in practice and love with others, and return them with increase to the Lord. We pledge to our ongoing formation as stewards and our responsibility to call others to that same endeavor. Almighty and ever-faithful God, it is our fervent hope and prayer that You who have begun this good work in us will bring it to fulfillment in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen
