highlights of 2017–2018

Dear BNI family members, None of us knows the level of excitement that existed when the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ opened the doors to Catholic Central High School on Sept. 16, 1921. Nor can we imagine if Blanche Burke, when she received her diploma as the school’s first graduate in 1924, had any idea that tens of thousands of young men and women would follow in her footsteps for the duration of a century.

But less than two years from now, we will give thanks for that genesis of today’s Bishop Noll Institute as we celebrate our centennial. For an entire school year beginning in August 2020, we will laud those who came before us and extol their accomplishments. The celebration will culminate with a grand party in September 2021.

Certainly, we will look back and give thanks. But we will do more than honor the vision of the Poor Handmaids, and the dedicated successes of so many more wonderful women and men responsible for a century of excellence.

We will look forward to a new century of BNI’s service to this region as a beacon for the families of northwest Indiana and southeast Chicagoland who desire to have their children formed in preparation for college and preparation for discipleship.

We will celebrate a legitimate renaissance of BNI. Why such optimism? Because plans for the future are taking shape in our building, and I know what inspiring changes are coming.

Much of the excitement and optimism stems from the Ignite & Inspire capital campaign, which will provide funding for three major initiatives: our state-ofthe-art STREAM Lab that will serve students in a facility unlike any other in the region; and endowed investment in our faculty for secondary degree assistance; and renovation of our outdoor athletic fields, including the addition of a regulation track.

In late August, our BNI School Board gave its blessing to move forward with the renovation of the STREAM Lab, with a goal of opening in fall 2019 for next school year. And our hope is to dedicate our new soccer and football stadium in August 2020, the start of our 100th school year. By then we also should see use of the first fruits of our teacher endowment fund to enhance instructional excellence.

You can help make this all happen! With 15 months to go in our Ignite & Inspire campaign, we have passed the halfway mark to our $3.5 million goal and hope soon to pass $2 million.

We are so grateful to the hundreds of alumni and Noll stakeholders who have helped us cross the halfway mark, but we need to finish strong in the second half of the campaign.

I ask you to prayerfully consider making a generous gift to our Ignite & Inspire campaign, above and beyond what you do for our school’s Annual Fund. Please consider paying it forward, in gratitude for the education, formation and lifeimpacting experience you received at Bishop Noll.

Know that you can share in the vision for our school’s second century, and you can help ignite and inspire a generation of learners and leaders who will contribute greatly to our Church, our communities, our world as our alumni continue to circle the globe.

OUR MISSION

Bishop Noll Institute, a diverse, Catholic college preparatory school, partners with local faith communities to empower young adults to live their faith in Christ through ministry, scholarship and leadership.

In its 97th year as Northwest Indiana’s premier Catholic high school, Bishop Noll continues to educate students in mind, body and soul with impressive results.

According to statistics released this year by the Indiana Dept. of Education, Bishop Noll not only had the highest 2017 graduation rate (99.2%) of any high school in Lake County, but it boasted the highest cumulative graduation rate (99%) of any county high school over the past four-year period.

In June, the Class of 2018 included 107 graduates, 16 of whom were named Graduates with Distinction, seniors who earn a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher after the first semester of senior year. Our enrollment for the 2017-18 school year included 484 students from 64 different Illinois and Indiana zip codes.

Continuing to prepare students for a technology driven future, BNI added a required STEM course for all freshmen. They discovered the design process, developed an understanding of the influence of creativity and innovation in their lives and were challenged to apply what they learned to complete course activities.

As Noll continued to move forward as a STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) integrated school, it also continued long-standing traditions of inspiring students to pursue the fine arts and excel in athletics.

Choir was one of the school’s largest organizations.

Choir students learned to read music and sing together as a vocal ensemble. They led the music liturgy at all school Masses and performed two concerts alongside BNI’s concert band in the 512-seat theater. In addition, they performed multiple concerts outside of Bishop Noll.

The award-winning Bishop Noll Band program featured marching and concert bands that competed and performed locally and beyond, plus additional groups that included jazz band; string, brass, woodwind and mariachi ensembles; and pit orchestra. Band students were encouraged to explore various musical avenues and, in the process, caught a glimpse of a college-level program. BNI’s Marching Band also played in many local and Chicago parades.

Noll’s Drama Department showcased student talents on stage and behind the scenes with productions of “Twelfth Night” and “West Side Story.”

In the spring, the Fine Arts Department hosted its third annual Fine Arts Weekend, which showcased student talents in art, music and theater.

Throughout the year students enjoyed and learned from a variety of guest speakers ranging from Bishop Noll alumni to speakers who travel around the world giving their talks. Dave Dolak ’76 paid his annual visit to BNI science classes and entertained students with an interactive talk about the geology of the Region and physics of musical instruments. Terry Murphy ‘75 gave a talk about the world of energy and energy storage to Noll’s AP Environmental Science class. Rosa OsegueraLohr from NASA’s Langley Research Center spoke to physics students about pursuing engineering and research careers and degrees. Talent scout Peter Sklar shared tips for success in the professional acting world with a valuable message about self image, health, relationships, and attitudes. These world class guest speakers helped Noll students see how to apply their Noll educations in the real world.

Seven new teachers joined the ranks of our award winning staff and others transitioned to new roles like Mary Albrecht who went from teaching theology to teaching STEM. In winter, veteran theology teacher Lydia Skurka ’74 was honored as a 2019 Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce Teacher of the Year and in spring, we said goodbye to beloved speech and theater teacher Fredi Conley who retired after teaching 48 years.

Bishop Noll students displayed their strong Catholic faith through daily prayer, all-school Masses and spiritual retreats.

Living their lives as true Disciples of Christ, the students also completed many service projects throughout the year. National Honor Society partnered with Heartland Blood Center to host four blood drives.

Students supported the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana by collecting more than 800 jars of peanut butter during the annual Peanut Butter Drive. During the Christmas season, Warriors participated in the Diocese of Gary’s Adopt-a-Friend program.

In their spare time, students explored extracurriculars with academic teams such as Speech & Debate and Spell Bowl and clubs like Art Club, Chinese Club and Yearbook. French Club members decorated a Christmas tree at the Museum of Science and Industry. Biology Club members took a field trip to University of Chicago where they toured various labs in the Department of Human Genetics and the yearbook staff learned about design, writing and photography at a workshop at the Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso.

Many exciting events happened in athletics this year. The Athletic Department started the Warrior Athletic Council to lead the community of BNI with strong, moral studentathletes. The group helped coordinate a winter pep rally and participated in community service projects.

The boys soccer program made school history with a great run, advancing to the final four during postseason, a feat that hadn’t been done since 1998. The team shocked the Region when they won the 2A Class Sectionals and Regionals. Bishop Noll’s standout bowler Ameer Lawrence ’19 placed 7th in the state finals. Four cross country runners qualified for Regionals and two track stars competed at state and placed 9th.

Girls basketball won Sectionals for the fifth year in a row, and the Lady Warriors volleyball team had four members named to the All-State team, making 10 volleyball all-state selections in the last five seasons.

A year of fun festivities began last September with Homecoming, which had the theme of “As the Leaves Turn.” The week included the Friday night football game and annual Tailgate Party – one of the most anticipated alumni events of the year! Friends enjoyed dinner, a beer garden and dancing. Most importantly, the evening was an opportunity to reconnect and many reunion classes kicked off their reunion weekend.

Thanks to the help of generous alumni and friends, BNI fundraisers helped raise vital dollars for the Annual Fund.

In July, the Bishop Noll Annual Golf Invitational at Innsbrook Country Club brought together about 100 alumni and friends for a day of fun and camaraderie.

Together, sponsors, donors and golfers assisted in contributing more than $12,500 to the BNI Scholarship Fund.

The Big Event, BNI’s largest single-day fundraiser, took place in April in the fieldhouse. Many alumni and friends came out and raised more than $60,000 to support student scholarships.

This year BNI also hosted its inaugural Warrior Day, a fun-filled day of fundraising that coincided with graduation. Donations totaled almost $10,000 and viewers loved special online content and live streaming of the day’s graduation events.

Finishing up the fiscal year, the Mary Whelan Golf Invitational took place in June at Briar Ridge Country Club and raised funds for BNI building projects. Over the past three years, the golf outing has supported BNI’s Ignite & Inspire Campaign to upgrade outdoor athletic facilities.

Ignite & Inspire honor roll Ignite & Inspire is a $3.5 million campaign underway to benefit Bishop Noll Institute in three important areas.
