The Ignite & Inspire capital campaign for Bishop Noll has passed

greetings from our principal Dear BNI Alumni and Supporters, It is with gratitude in my heart that I inform you that thanks to the dedicated energy and time spent throughout last school year and this summer, BNI was able to successfully roll out more than 500 technology upgrades in our building with minimal issues. The first two days of school, students spent time learning how to properly use their new iPads and we discussed the importance of digital citizenship. (Read more about our 1:1 iPad launch on P. 6) This year we are focusing on the importance of using technology as a tool to spread the Good News and do God’s work.

I have more exciting news to share. In January 2019 we will begin renovating the former pool area (Whelan Activities Center) into a brand new STREAM Lab and Innovation Center. As you can see from the cover rendering of this issue of Noll Today, this is an impressive space. The center was designed with BNI staff and student input and will allow us to enhance our current academic programs and add to our growing STREAM program.

The center will be equipped with the following spaces: LEARNING STUDIO/DESIGN LAB This space will allow us to provide 21st century instruction, which includes flexible seating space for students to move around, working independently or in groups to design projects. Our current classrooms do not have the flexibility to support collaborative and independent work. In addition the space will be equipped with STREAM strength technology on computers and also allow students to work independently or collaboratively.

MAKERSPACE This unique space is a highlight of our Innovation Center. Its bench-like seating will allow students to have a more hands-on experience. In this space they will be able to make small models using hand tools. This collaborative space encourages students to create prototypes and test results based off their original designs.

PROTOTYPE STUDIO In this space, students will be able to build models and use larger equipment. It will go beyond drills and saws and provide a variety of equipment to help students build their final products for display.

This Innovation Center has the potential to enhance our BNI curriculum and our STREAM vision. The faculty and students are excited for these opportunities and we all wish to thank the Ignite & Inspire capital campaign and supporters like you for these funds to invest in BNI and STREAM into the next 100 years. As principal of Bishop Noll, it is my goal to make BNI the first elite STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) school in Indiana. I am confident that your support of this project will boost Bishop Noll into a new century of learning and another century of service to Northwest Indiana.

BNI President Paul Mullaney said the campaign passed the $1.84 million mark in pledges by the end of August, and more than $1.46 million had been collected.

“We are grateful to our alumni and stakeholders for their belief in Bishop Noll and for their understanding of the importance of having a thriving BNI in this region for generations yet to come,” Mullaney said.

“We are working to successfully finish our campaign by the end of 2019, and have the fruits of the campaign in place before we celebrate our centennial in the

2020-21 school year. We ask those alumni who have yet to pledge to prayerfully consider investing in our school’s future.”

The campaign will benefit Bishop Noll in three areas: • $1 million for BNI’s STREAM initiative, specifically the renovation of the Whelan Activities Center into a STREAM Lab and Innovation Center.

• $1 million in endowed funds for Instructional Excellence, intended to perpetually benefit BNI teachers with tuition support for advanced degrees.

• $1.5 million for outdoor facilities, intended to update BNI’s football/ soccer field to also include an eightlane track and other accommodations.

In August, BNI’s School Board approved to move forward with the design phase for the STREAM Lab with a goal of opening the center in Fall 2019 for the start of Noll’s 99th school year.

Among the efforts aiding the campaign is the Warrior Challenge, in which members of the various graduating classes are teaming

up, trying to reach a goal of $50,000 or more for their class.

Mullaney said alumni and stakeholders need to know that Ignite & Inspire is a special campaign intended to go above and beyond the fundraising efforts of the traditional BNI Annual Fund.

“The Annual Fund remains critical to our operations at Noll to keep tuition as affordable as possible for our families yearin, year-out,” he said. “We are asking our stakeholders to remain committed to the Annual Fund, using the envelope in this magazine to donate to that effort, but also consider investing with a gift to our Ignite & Inspire campaign.”

He said donors can make a gift to the capital campaign at bishopnoll.org by going to the “Support BNI” tab and choosing Donate—Ignite & Inspire.

Starring alongside the Dancing Buscias, Pieroguttes, Mr. Pierogi and Polkahontas, Bishop Noll proudly showcased its past, present and future in the Pierogi Parade this July. Alumni and current students rode on the Pierogi Belle float and threw BNI gear to adoring fans.

Before and after the parade, alumni met at Center Lounge where they had a chance to cool off, reconnect and learn more about Noll’s Ignite & Inspire Campaign.

On graduation day, Bishop Noll students heard life lessons from an alumnus who overcame his own obstacles to find success as a renowned neurosurgeon, professor and adviser to the pope.

Dr. Robert J. Buchanan ’82 encouraged graduates to learn from lessons their families, friends and Bishop Noll have taught them.

Speaking about his own high school days, Buchanan noted that while he was an all-state and all-American tennis player, he at times struggled with academics and discipline.

“I did not have a clear pathway to finding my way to where I stand addressing you here today. I was often ‘off-script’ during my life journey.”

Buchanan, a devout Catholic who serves on the board of directors for the National Catholic Bioethics Center and as a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life, said, “So, how in the world did a guy like me get appointed by two Popes to be their adviser, be a chief of a neurosurgery department, get knighted into an ancient religious order, and find a wife? It’s because I never lost sight of the fact that I wanted to make a contribution to the world in some way. I learned how to be tenacious and steadfast once I put my mind to something. We in this room come from a tough stock of people; very little has been handed to people from our community. Our grandparents and parents are fighters and have fought very hard and tirelessly to get you and I to where we now stand … I wasn’t going to be negatively defined by my past; but instead, my resolve to start off on a good foot was accelerated.”

Buchanan told the students that their Catholic faith will give them everything they need to live a full and meaningful life:

“…it was Christ who set the world on fire with an unconditional love, forgiveness, and service to others….We are acting as Christ’s representatives here on earth. And we need to see Him in those we interact with every day, in those we serve.”

In closing, Buchanan asked the graduates to look around at their classmates and wonder who may one day be speaking at future BNI graduation ceremonies, who may be tapped on the shoulder by a president or a pope and be asked to serve.

“I was sitting there, where you are, 36 years ago, a guy from the Southeast Side of Chicago, and it happened to me. And it can happen to you as well, Class of 2018, because you are prepared to serve.”

Graduate grateful for Catholic education

Payton Hewlett is enjoying his first semester at Indiana University in Bloomington.

The athlete who played varsity football, basketball and track was also vice president of BNI’s National Honor Society chapter and a member of the Spell Bowl Team. In addition, he was one of Noll’s Graduates with Distinction, those who earn a 4.0 or above cumulative GPA. Hewlett said when he came to Bishop Noll as a freshman, he knew only one other student, as he was one of a small percentage of students who came from public school. However, it wasn’t long before he made friends and started reaching for success.

“I think attending BNI after going to public school enabled me to be more successful in high school because there are less distractions and most of my classmates are high achievers, which pushed me to always be at my best,” he said. “Going to a Catholic school also made me more spiritual and closer to God, which is something I value greatly, and hope to continue to build on.”

BNI faces in the news 4 things to know about BNI’s new director of admissions, Jeff Stur

Jeff Stur ’98 returns to his alma mater as BNI’s director of admissions. He succeeds Nancy Repay ’85, who was named principal at St. John Bosco School in Hammond.

1 He joins the Noll administrative team after two years as director of communications and development for Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Gary.

2 Both of his parents, his two sisters and numerous extended family members are Bishop Noll graduates.

3 A graduate of Marquette University with a B.A. in public relations and a minor in marketing, he spent 10 years in the professional sports industry, formulating and executing successful P.R. and marketing campaigns. He worked as director of communications for Chicagoland Speedway and also at Edelman, a leading global communications marketing firm for which he served as the liaison between NASCAR Cup champion Tony Stewart and Stewart’s primary sponsor, Office Depot.

In high school, he played four years of basketball and baseball for Bishop Noll. In baseball, he was part of two teams that advanced to the regional championship. He also serves as an assistant baseball coach for the Warriors, who won sectionals in 2017 and 2018.

Kevin Farrell, art and English; Kayla Jones, theater and speech; Wayne Racine, health and P.E.; and Jeff Stur, director of admissions, join the Bishop Noll family this school year.

Jones comes to Noll from Ball State University with a degree in theater education. She teaches theater and speech and is running the after-school theater program.

Farrell comes to Noll after a stint at Gavit High School and many years teaching. He teaches sophomore English and art.

Racine joins the faculty teaching P.E. and health. He is no stranger to students, however, from his role as head football coach.

After teaching 48 years, Mrs. Conley retires

Bishop Noll Institute veteran teacher Elizabeth “Fredi” Conley has retired after a total of 48 years in education. Conley, who served as a speech, theater, debate and physical education teacher, taught at BNI for 28 years. She also served as head of the theater department and as director of countless productions.

Conley plans on traveling with her husband and teaching theater part-time at Calumet College of St. Joseph. She also plans on subbing at Noll.

Congratulations to veteran BNI teacher Lydia Skurka ’74 for being recognized as Teacher of the Year by the Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce.

BNI molding future young journalists

Mary Buksa ’21 attended a summer yearbook workshop at St. Paul’s School in Valparaiso. The day was packed with training in theme, design, trends and included the chance to work with a professional graphic designer on the 2018–19 yearbook cover.

“Attending this workshop really sparked an interest in graphic designing for me. I enjoyed getting to learn more about certain tools to use for editing to make this coming yearbook the best one yet,” Mary said.

Freshman year reveals love of science

Olivia Baczkowski ’21 recently began her second year at Noll.

“My first year at Bishop Noll was quite the eye-opener. It showed me many things, like the power of family, but of family that you choose. It showed me the importance of education and how many doors it can open for you, if only you seek the key and take advantage of your opportunities. Some of my greatest memories here have been through science class. I feel that through science, you discover the world in a completely different way and it changes how you see things.”

Fine Arts Weekend highlights talents Jalynn Edwards ’19 performed during BNI’s third annual Fine Arts Weekend this spring.

The weekend consisted of talent shows, an art gallery, one-acts, band and choir concerts. “My favorite part of Fine Arts Weekend was seeing all of the amazing talent showcased throughout the three days, and how passionate everyone was about their talents,” Jalynn said.

She had no idea and neither did they that she would be on the prom court and be named prom queen, she said.

“Prom night was just wonderful,” Cristina said. “It was so much fun and it would have not been possible without everyone who helped me to raise money so I could go. I am really thankful for all those teachers and all those classmates that made all of it possible.”

Graduation rate continues to soar

Based on the most recent data from the Indiana Dept. of Education, Bishop Noll Institute recorded the highest graduation rate among all Lake County high schools in 2017 and cumulatively over the past four years.

Bishop Noll achieved a 99.2% graduation rate in 2017 and a 99% rate overall from 2014 to 2017, according to IDOE records.

Alumni reunite at spring musical

It was great to see many alumni—especially from the late ’60s— at this spring’s musical “West Side Story.” In fact, a couple cast members from BNI’s first production the show in 1968 were recognized during intermission of one show and paired up with the current student in the same role.

Newly launched 1:1 iPad program aims to create digital citizens through Christ

The 1:1 iPad initiative for students began this fall. This program provides students with the technology necessary to be successful in this digital age and allows them to expand their learning possibilities.

The decision to adopt iPads as the 1:1 device was simple: They’re cost-effective for the school, they’re mobile, they’re representative of this generation’s technology, and they allow students to express their creativity through technology. As always, Jesus Christ is the driving force behind this initiative, and as we strive to cultivate future change makers of the world, our primary goal with this program is for our students to become digital citizens through Christ.

BNI Writing Center teaches through revision

To improve the writing ability of BNI students, the Bishop Noll Writing Center opened last school year. Modeled after college writing centers, where peer tutors help others revise their work, Bishop Noll boasts the only writing center registered at the high school level in the state of Indiana, according to the International Writing Centers Association.

The BNI Writing Center is run through trained student tutors who offer consultation and feedback to any student who schedules a time to come in for help.

Speech team builds on strengths

Bishop Noll Institute’s speech team, which was resurrected in 2015, has found success by building upon its strengths. The team has earned 12 total tournament trophies out of 15 tournaments the past two seasons, including a fifth place Class A at State this past school year. During the speech season, 42 students competed in at least one tournament. Noll brought 16 students in 20 events to the sectional tournament. In the sectional, Noll qualified two students to state, who ended up earning fifth place.

By Stacia Bolakowski Campus Minister Student retreats are the backbone of the BNI Campus Ministry program. Getting away from the activities of everyday life once a school year gives our teens the opportunity to listen to the voice of God stirring in their souls. Retreat activities are also designed to give our students the hearts of disciples that will serve our world mind, body, and soul.

Our comprehensive, four-year retreat program is in its sixth full year of existence. Each retreat builds upon the one that precedes it, giving students a comprehensive, balanced experience.

Freshman Retreat—To welcome freshmen to Bishop Noll and get them started on their high-school faith journeys, the Freshmen Retreat occurs on campus and is led by 65+ Bishop Noll upperclassmen and sophomore assistants known as the “Pink Bandanas.” The retreat helps freshmen become more comfortable with the Noll family by building community, confronting and discussing the challenges of high school, and becoming part of our faith community. Sophomore Retreat—El Camino: El Camino is a famous, traditional pilgrimage trail in northern Spain. For more than 1,000 years, people have walked this 500-mile journey following only a set of yellow arrows painted on rocks, trees, trails, and signs. Without a map, pilgrims reach the great cathedral in Santiago, built on the tomb of St. James, one of the 12 apostles.

Sophomores at BNI are shown “the way” on this special overnight retreat created for BNI students by BNI students: a simple progression that calls retreatants to reflect on self, others, and God. This helps us gain self-knowledge, strengthen our relationships with others, and grow closer to God.

Kairos uses personal talks from peer and adult leaders, small- and large-group discussions, periods of silence and reflection, various integrated prayer experiences, and the Sacraments to invite teens to more seriously discover God in all things.

Junior Retreat—Kairos: Kairos, a Greek word that means “God’s time,” calls juniors to embrace timelessness in this intensive four-day Catholic retreat. Kairos uses personal talks from peer and adult leaders, small- and large-group discussions, periods of silence and reflection, various integrated prayer experiences, and the Sacraments to invite teens to more seriously discover God in all things. sports news Football program adjusts status for 2 years, eyes rebuild with safe, strategic plan

As part of a rebuilding effort to return the football program to its rich history of success, Bishop Noll is playing a junior varsity schedule the next two seasons.

Though this was a difficult decision, Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick ’01 said it is a way to ensure the safety of Noll’s student-athletes, as the majority of current players are freshmen.

It also allows BNI to hit the restart button on a program that has struggled on the field due to a low number of participating students in recent years.

“Unfortunately, due to low numbers of upperclassmen, we could not fully commit to competing at the varsity level. It is our hope and sincere goal to take this season and next season to rebuild our program from the bottom up in hopes to reignite our football program and bring it back to its past competitive level. We feel it would not be prudent or responsible to subject our young and inexperienced players to the rigors of varsity football at this time.

“We look to rebuild our program through growth of our younger players’ skills and confidence, and we look for our school to rally around our football team as we have done for more than 90 years.”

competed at the regional and state levels. For seven straight years he coached athletes to the girls state track finals. In addition, he completed many exterior improvement projects around BNI, including resurfacing the fieldhouse track and boys locker room and remodeling the training room.

Having learned from the best, Sal Cordova ’14 has been named the new coach for cross country.

“Coach Repay was a fantastic coach. He always made sure the team was ready for any challenge we might have faced and he always knew what to say. As the next Bishop Noll Institute head cross country coach, I can only attempt to fill the giant shoes he left for me. I’m incredibly excited to rejoin the BNI family and lead the cross country team as a coach rather than an athlete and I can’t wait to see where the program will go next,” Sal said.

Other athletes also paid tribute to Repay.

“Mr. Repay was so much more than just a great coach to me.

He inspired the passion for running I have today, and taught me how to have confidence not only in running but in all aspects of life. He is the one who truly taught me that giving up is never an option,” said Megan Sullivan ’18.

“Coach Repay has been my coach for four years. We definitely had our disagreements, but he cared about the team and wanted us to succeed, even if it wasn’t in track. Whatever we did he wanted us to be great at it!” said Faith Jackson ’18, who competed at the state level this year.

“When describing Coach Repay, ‘dedication’ is a word that comes to mind. Even after his sons graduated and were no longer on the team, Coach Repay poured his heart and soul into every practice and every meet. He truly cared about not only our improvement in the sport, but in our improvement as young men and women. He was an unbelievable motivator and he is leaving big shoes to fill at Bishop Noll,” said Sam Sapyta ’15.

Basketball

Bishop Noll boys' basketball team had an intense season that ended with the team winning the conference ball traveling trophy and sharing the GSSC championship.

Softball

The early weeks of the 2018 softball season were riddled with terrible weather conditions, which led to numerous cancellations and made it hard to build any momentum. However, under the leadership of seven seniors, the team was able to move through conference play and into the post-season. The Lady Warriors finished 10-4 in conference and 12-10 overall.

Triple Threat Club

There was a new honor started this year: The Triple Threat Club, which honored student-athletes who were part of three sports in an academic year.

Track at State

Baseball

The team had an outstanding season, winning its third straight sectional title (No. 27 in school history) under Coach Anthony Hoolehan.

With several underclassmen having to step up to the plate, the team was able to pull through.

Track and Field

The track and field team had another successful season. They ended their indoor season on a high note by winning the Hammond City Meet for both the boys and girls. The team survived a brutal outdoor season because of the unpredictable weather. Girls and Boys track and field both took home 3rd at conference with several girls and boys in the top 8.

On Aug. 1, 250 Warriors and friends arrived at Guaranteed Rate Field for a night not to be forgotten. During the inaugural Bishop Noll White Sox Night, the BNI Choir garnered praise from the audience and White Sox staff for its beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. They were even asked to sing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the seventh inning stretch. Thanks to everyone for making this inaugural outing such a success. We can’t wait until next year! alumni gifts make first Warrior Day a success Bishop Noll Institute’s Warrior Day was a fun-filled fundraising day that coincided with Graduation Day. Viewers watched as the class of 2018 become the newest BNI alumni during live broadcasts of the Baccalaureate Mass and graduation ceremony.

In addition, they enjoyed a variety of special videos and interviews that aired throughout the day.

What inspired you to start the scholarship?

“Everyone in our family went to Noll: my sister Kathy graduated in ’67, brother Peter in ’68, brother John in ’70, and myself in ’75. We all ended up moving away and living in different parts of the country to pursue careers outside of Hammond, but Pete and I had the opportunity to reconnect when we returned home a few years ago to help manage the Hammond Group, a specialty chemical company focused on energy storage. That was a great time for us; we worked side by side for four years, expressing different viewpoints as siblings are known to do. During this period, we also had the opportunity to re-engage with Noll. Unfortunately, Pete contracted a very aggressive cancer last year and passed away within a few months of his diagnosis. Before he died, we often chatted about how lucky we were to be back here at the company where our father had worked for so many years and how much BNI had influenced our lives.

We even presented a few guest lectures at Noll; Peter’s in economics and mine in engineering, so I thought it was only fitting to establish a scholarship in his memory, reflecting our philosophy on life and learning experiences.”

How did you come up with the scholarship criteria?

“Although we had different career paths, Pete and I believed that there were many instances in our life where we learned more from overcoming adversity than we did from success. We understood that it was how you responded to adversity that really did more to define you than anything else. I’d also say that many of our greatest leaders overcame adversity.

So much so, that it might even be the defining characteristic of a great leader. The Warrior Spirit Scholarship is formulated to recognize students who have overcome adversity and who are striving to do better. The students selected for this scholarship will be those who, in the estimation of the faculty, have shown the most improvement. By taking responsibility for their schoolwork, these students overcame challenges and improved their academic performance.”

How did the scholarship affect its recipients?

“The inaugural recipients are Natalie Casares, Philip Reyes-Brown and Chris Juarez. I think the faculty did a great job selecting these winners. I received heartfelt letters from each one of them and I can tell you that all three have overcome difficult obstacles. I want to offer them encouragement for their continued success and trust that they will be an example to their classmates. I know Pete would be happy with their progress.”

Dr. Richard Schreiner ’63 dedicated to saving lives of newborns

Andrea Hernandez ’18 inspired by volunteer role at children's hospital

Inspired by her volunteer work, Andrea Hernandez ’18 plans to study neuroscience at Loyola University with the intent of becoming a pediatric neurologist Andrea is a Tender Loving Care volunteer at La Rabida Children’s Hospital, where her main job is to bond with patients as well as comfort those who do not get to see their families often.

She explained that although her volunteer work has its challenges because of other responsibilities, the experience is rewarding.

“Walking through those doors on my first day I thought, ‘Wow I’m really going to have the chance to brighten their day,’ and little did I know they were going to reciprocate that and brighten mine. So many teeny, tiny hands have touched my heart in a way that has left a mark on me forever,” Andrea said.

Mauricio participated in BNI’s Kairos retreat and has been an altar server for 10 years. To build a strong faith which he can share, he said he is committed to daily prayer.

“Over time, I have changed and I think family and faith are the most important parts of my life,” Mauricio said. “These are the things that are always with me.”

This year, Mauricio hopes to expand his extracurricular activities from soccer to participating in swimming and wrestling.

Despite his busy schedule, he said he has recently enjoyed spending more time with his parents and two sisters, as well as extended family.

Cheer team car wash raises money to benefit local cancer patients

The Bishop Noll Cheer Team continues to make us proud with its community service efforts throughout the Region. Most recently, the team and Coach Juli Sandoval ’82 participated in a carwash benefiting the Cancer Resource Centre—Unite & Fight Cancer Walk & Fun Run. The team raised $576 in their fifth year helping at the car wash. They are always willing to help a worthy cause!

Family, faith inspire Bishop Noll senior

Saving the lives of newborns is all in a day’s work for Dr. Richard Schreiner ’63, a neonatologist with Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health. He was recently honored for his decades of service in a feature article published by the hospital.

It detailed how in the 1970s, neonatology was a new field and Dr. Schreiner was a young physician with elite training in tiny newborns. He worked on a special “mobile newborn intensive care unit” known as the Gresham Mobile dashing around Indiana to save hundreds of newborns.

“It was a very novel idea, a novel thing,” Dr. Schreiner said in the article.

“And it truly made a difference. It really did.”

Had an amazing experience at Bishop Noll! Met a lot of good people from all over the Region, many of whom I am still in touch with today. The Noll community was mostly made up of diverse, tolerant, respectful, conscience and caring individuals. We are grounded in the fact that we were a close knit family that valued faith and learning in order to become moralistic positive contributing members of society. This is what has influenced me in both my professional as well as personal life.

Larry Zaborowski attended Noll from 1955-56 and earned a four-year football scholarship to Arkansas State in Jonesboro, Ark. In 1959, he was named to Academic All-American Football Team. He was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army for three years and returned to California as a teacher and coach from 1974-2003. He served as commandant of St. Catherine’s Military School in Anaheim, Calif., before retiring in 2003. He currently lives in Palm Desert, Calif., and has four children, 10 grandchildren and one great grandson.

The Rev. Charles A. Mosley ’76 has been appointed Dean of the Gary/North Deanery by Bishop Donald Hying.

A pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish and administrator at St. Catherine of Siena, both in Hessville, Father Mosley taught theology at BNI for 20 years and coached wrestling for 17 years. He was also the BNI campus minister for 10 years.

Mary Mosser has been an associate of the Franciscan Sisters of Chicago in Lemont, Ill., since 2011. Associates are non-vowed Christian women and men called to share in prayer, life, mission and ministry of the Sisters. Associates meet to learn, reflect, pray, catch up, laugh and share meals with each other and the Sisters. Since the end of 2015, Mary has been writing for the Sisters’ website about the associate group day presentations. She is happy to be part of this amazing group and to have been given the chance to

Nancy Repay began a new role in the Diocese of Gary this school year after being named principal at St. John Bosco School in Hammond. Nancy taught at Bosco, which is her home parish, before working as Bishop Noll’s director of admissions. Two years ago, under Nancy's watch, Bishop Noll reached a 14-year enrollment high.

Her husband, Karl ’85, retired as the head cross country and track coach at BNI. Read more about that on P. 8. We wish Nancy and Karl the best of luck in their new endeavors.

Dr. Samantha HofferthFrancis was named St. Thomas More School principal this school year.

Samantha brings many gifts and talents to the school community in Munster and looks to incorporate her science background to further the integration of STREAM into all aspects of the curriculum.

In addition to her nine years in education, she holds a doctorate of chiropractic from the Palmer College of Chiropractic and has recently been accepted into the prestigious Mary Ann Remick Leadership Program at the University of Notre Dame for Educational Leadership.

Prior to being named principal, she taught seventh and eighth grade science and was the coach at St. Tom’s.

Thomas Clements earned his Ph.D. from the Biochemistry & Cell Biology Program at Rice University in Houston. He and his wife, Katie (Ph.D. in chemistry), now live in Nashville, Tenn., where Thomas is a member of the biology teaching faculty at Vanderbilt University.

Julie Fornaciari, BNI’s valedictorian in 2012, earned her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh and now is a Ph.D. student in chemical engineering at the University of California, Bekeley. Under the advising of Prof. Alex Bell and Dr. Adam Weber, Julie is studying electrocatalysis and renewable fuel technology in fuel cell-like systems.

Sienna Gonzalez, Bishop Noll class of 2014, graduated from Indiana University Bloomington.

Out of 9,844 degrees given at the Bloomington commencement ceremony, Gonzalez was one of 41 graduates who earned a triple major and was the first triple major in all three departments: animal behavior, east Asian languages and cultures with a specialization in Chinese and biology.

She is currently interning at Lincoln Park Zoo as a behavioral enrichment intern in the primate house. Following her internship, she has been offered a position at the Shedd Aquarium in the marine mammal department.

“My education at Noll impacted my ability to triple major. I began dual credit, ACP, and AP courses as a sophomore in high school and completed more than half a year in college credits, which allowed me to take more classes in my four years at IU. My college career began a week after graduating from Bishop Noll and every summer for the last four years I took courses that would allow me to complete three degrees."

1994

Lena Gonzales and Marcus Smith met freshman year in Spanish class and were married Sept. 23, 2006. The couple has three children.

“He made me laugh then and still does,” Lena wrote. “We were really good friends throughout high school... with our most common interest being sports. We finally started dating shortly after graduation.” Following high

school, Marcus headed to Florida on a baseball scholarship and the couple decided it was best to remain friends.

Ten years later, Lena was on the reunion committee and asked Marcus if he would attend the reunion. “He did...low and behold for me in hopes to have another chance of being together. We kept in touch and I visited him in Florida in December 2004. It was an instant reconnection and became the beginning of our ‘forever’ story.”

1999, 2000

Lauren Lascola and Timothy Lesczynski met in math class and started dating after hanging out a few weeks.

“It came about because I gave him a ride to a football game. We started dating when I was a

junior, dated until I graduated and we were on and off throughout college,” Lauren wrote. The couple had a big Vegas wedding Sept. 24, 2009, and currently live in St. John. They enjoy traveling, attending Hawks and Sox games and hanging out with their high school classmates.

1999, 2000

Toni Moren and Gary Ranos met February of their sophomore and junior years.

“We didn’t really run in the same circles until that spring when my BFF Matt Zipko (’00) convinced me to try out for the spring musical,” Toni wrote.

The couple briefly dated and then broke up. They later reconnected at a party, eventually becoming best friends.

“We continued that way until the following spring

when Gary returned from spring break college visits and realized he couldn’t just be my friend anymore (I had just been waiting patiently while feeling the same way) and we became each other’s last boyfriend and girlfriend.”

There were married Nov. 12, 2005, and have four children.

Their family currently lives in Houston, Texas.

“Today our oldest carries on dad's tradition of playing ice hockey and perhaps we'll have a dancer in the mix as well. Drama definitely has carried on in our house, so they’d all rock at theater!”

Class of 1969 The Bishop Noll Class of 1969 will celebrate its 50th reunion June 29, 2019, at Centennial Park in Munster. Plans are still being finalized but the cost is expected to be about $75 per person. Other activities may include a Mass,

Class of 1974 The Class of 1974 is in the process of planning its 45th reunion. The reunion will be held in the summer/fall of 2019.

A committee has been formed; however, they are looking to add a few more classmates to the committee. Class of 1983 Bishop Noll’s Class of 1983 celebrated its 35th reunion in August. A casual gathering took place at Set ’Em Up in Griffith and a reunion dinner took place in the BNI Cafeteria.

“The best part of our 35th class reunion was seeing everyone and reconnecting! So many came from far away for only a weekend, and they had a great time. Holding hands with my classmates in a circle as Deacon Mike Halas (’83) began our evening with

Grew up: Highland, Ind. Current hometown: Indianapolis, Ind. How did you get started in the world of racing?

“I've had a passion for racing, since the first time my Uncle took me to a race at Illiana Speedway. While in grad school at Purdue Northwest, I worked in radio at WJOB in Hammond, hosting a racing show and doing

general sports, which really got me interested in the media relations side of racing.”

At the same time, I was sending out resumes and out of the blue, the World of Outlaws called and asked if I would be interested in going on the road and doing their PR. I did that for the next four and a half seasons. They race about 80 times a year and I was on the road for about 200 days a year.

What are some highlights of working in the auto racing/marketing industry?

The people from coast to coast whom I have met over the years. I try to keep in touch with quite a few of them. Another highlight is getting to know so many drivers and their families, who in turn become like family. I have made friends I will have my entire life thanks to racing.

What are some of your best memories from Bishop Noll?

I have so many great memories of Bishop Noll. I had so many great teachers and am so thankful for that. I enjoyed and learned from every single teacher I had. I was fortunate enough to play baseball for three years and had great coaches in Coach Ferry Sr. and Jr. and Coach Pavlina, who not only taught us to play the game the right way, but also life lessons.

Did you have an inspiring/influential teacher at Bishop Noll?

One of the most inspiring teachers I had was Mr. Jackowski for German. Mr. J had these items that we had to memorize and recite (in English) of proper ways to learn, live and conduct yourself and such.

How do you think Bishop Noll helped you in your adult life?

By reflecting on what it means to live a Catholic life each and every day. Having theology class every day was wonderful and I was blessed to have four different and very inspiring theology teachers at Bishop Noll. Mrs. Neinhaus taught us a couple of prayer mantras freshman year that I still recite to this day in my daily prayers.
