PRESIDENT’S PEN Dr. John Barnhardt President/CEO Dear McNamara Team & Family, Welcome to the 23-24 school year, and the latest edition of our Mustang Messenger! It is with immense joy and gratitude that I write to you to share some exciting news about the future of our beloved school.

First, I am thrilled to share that I recently accepted the Board of Directors’ invitation to lead our community for the next seven years. Nowhere else feels more like home for my family and me, and I am wholeheartedly committed to furthering the mission and vision of Bishop McNamara. This journey has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Every day, I am inspired by the remarkable students, dedicated faculty, and passionate staff members who make Bishop McNamara the special place that it is. Together, we have achieved significant milestones, and I am eager to keep building upon this strong foundation.

Already this school year, it is clear that we are blessed with a world-class faculty and staff team. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to our students is truly commendable. I am also grateful to the individuals, families, and organizations who have financially supported Bishop McNamara over the past year, as evidenced by the remarkable success in our Annual Report! Their generosity and belief in our mission have a profound impact on the lives of our students.

We have immersed ourselves in the work of strategic planning this year. Our Board of Directors recently wrapped up a two-month strategic planning session and I look forward to sharing it in the Summer 2024 Mustang Messenger.

We are also kicking off planning for our next Campus Master Plan, revisiting our Strategic Mission Assessment, and launching a feasibility study for the renovation of our 100/200 classroom wing. All of this work includes the voices and ideas of students, families, employees, alumni, and our Board of Directors.

To our new Class of 2027 and prospective Class of 2028 families, welcome! We are so happy to have you as a part of our BMHS Family. If you are a BMHS or La Reine alumni, please connect with us, and come for a visit. Our beloved McNamara will not disappoint.

The path ahead is filled with opportunities and challenges, but I am confident that, together, we can continue to inspire excellence, foster character, and empower the next generation of leaders. I am honored to have the privilege of serving this incredible community for the next seven years, and I look forward to our collective efforts in making Bishop McNamara High School an even more exceptional place of learning, growth, faith, service, and innovation.

CHAIRMAN’S LETTER Robert N. Summers ’86 Chair, BMHS Board of Directors Greetings to all members of the Bishop McNamara Family, I hope this finds you in good health and high spirits. As the Chair of the Bishop McNamara Board of Directors, I have been truly honored to serve in this capacity for the past five years.

With my term coming to a close at the end of this academic year, I find myself reflecting on the fantastic journey we've undertaken together, and I wanted to take a moment to express my deep appreciation for your ongoing support.

The Bishop McNamara community is strong. Our school’s legacy and success is a testament to the dedication, talent, and love of countless individuals who have passed through its doors - our students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners. For our alumni, you are an integral part of this legacy, and we would like to extend a heartfelt invitation to you to come and visit your alma mater, whether that is just to see campus, to cheer on our Mustangs at a game, or to marvel at our Fine Arts performances throughout the year.

McNamara has undergone remarkable transformations over the years, and we believe you would be proud of the innovations and advancements we have made.

Our classrooms, facilities, and extracurricular programs have all flourished, providing an even more enriching and diverse educational experience for our students. We would love to have you rediscover the school, walk down memory lane, and see firsthand how we've evolved while staying true to our mission to educate hearts and minds in a dynamic, inclusive Catholic school community rooted in the Holy Cross tradition.

I am also thrilled that our President/CEO, Dr. John Barnhardt, will continue to serve for the next seven years here at McNamara. John has shown incredible leadership through his first three years here, and McNamara will continue to grow with his drive, vision, and determination to help the school grow.

Your continued involvement with Bishop McNamara is vital to our mission, and your presence and time continue to mean so much to us. We look forward to celebrating the successes of our Mustangs, faculty, staff, and alumni throughout this year.

It is with great joy that I, as the Parents' Club President, a proud La Reine alum (Class of 1991!), and a current parent, share my all-in enthusiasm for our beloved school and community.

Honoring our Teachers of the Year We are proud to share our 2023 Teachers of the Year! This year’s Veteran Teacher of the Year is Bishop McNamara alum Kimberly Weaver ‘14, a teacher in our English department. This year’s Novice Teacher of the Year is Mr. Matthew Budzik, a teacher in our Math department.

The Archdiocese of Washington Catholic Schools Office & the High School Principals’ Association present these awards each year.

These outstanding faculty members were recognized in an article in the Catholic Standard, and were presented with their awards at the High School Principals’ Association Professional Development Day in October. n

Peer Ministry Retreat The retreat for the senior Peer Ministers took place this past August at the Washington Retreat House in Northeast DC. Tasked with serving our school throughout the year in a variety of roles, the retreat is an opportunity for the Peer Ministers to take a step back, get to know themselves and their fellow peer ministers, and ground themselves in faith and God for the year ahead. The retreat concluded with a prayer service in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception just steps away from where the seniors will graduate in just 10 short months. n

Freshman Orientation Our BMHS Family had a blast welcoming the Class of 2027! Freshman Orientation featured a scavenger hunt, team building activities, practicing daily routines and class locations. We also held our first-ever Parent University for Class of 2027 parents, a full-day overview of the school which concluded with our 2nd Annual Freshman Family Cookout. Everyone had a wonderful time, and we pray that the Class of 2027 has a strong start as they continue their Mustang experience. n

30th First Day of School August 28th marked the 30th First Day of School together for two of our longtime faculty members, Theology & Social Studies Teacher and Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Mr. Adam Greer and CITE Lab Director Mr. Patrick Skerpon!

Mr. Greer and Mr. Skerpon each attended St. Pius X Regional School from 1st-8th Grade, high school at DeMatha Catholic High School, and they have each been here at Bishop McNamara High School for 18 years. Congratulations to Mr. Greer and Mr. Skerpon on this BMHS Family milestone! n

First FADE Colloquium The Bishop McNamara Fine Arts Department welcomed the incredible Soul in Motion as their September FADE Colloquium Guest Artist. For almost 4 decades, Soul In Motion has presented the beauty and richness of the African-American culture with diverse audiences. n

Congratulations to Mr. Michael Barry, a teacher in our Social Studies department, whose documentary, “Even the Women Must Fight” recently won Best Short Film at the Prince George's Film Festival in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Mr. Barry served as a producer on the documentary. You can learn more about the documentary at www.eventhewomenmustfight.com. n

Mustangs Go Pink It was another amazing “Mustangs Go Pink” on Friday, October 6th! Students, faculty, and staff had fun dressing up in pink to support breast cancer research. Thanks to our community’s support, we are able to donate $4,725.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. n

Liturgical Celebrations Back to School Liturgy To kick off the beginning of a new school year, Monsignor Ray East of St. Teresa of Avila Church in Southeast DC visited our school and celebrated our first All School Mass of the year on September 12th alongside Father Alberto Biondi of Mount Calvary Catholic Church. Filled with the zeal that only Msgr. East can bring, our community was encouraged to consider the Holy Cross of Jesus that allows our trials and tribulations to have "an expiration date" because of the promise of new life in Christ. As always, our choir led by Ms. Rhoda Sutton and Wind Ensemble led by Mrs. Francine Amos-Hardy performed and inspired our students with their gifts. It was a wonderful celebration and perfect way for our school to start the year. n October Liturgy For our all school liturgy in October, Father Pawel Sass of Nativity Church in Northwest DC joined our community (as he has been doing for over 14 years!) to celebrate our Mass. Calling us to consider how the Holy Spirit might be working in our lives, Fr. Sass implored that we do not hesitate to call upon the name of the Lord for our needs. He reminded us that Jesus said that the door is always answered for the one who knocks fervently. The choir performed many wonderful pieces including “Eres Mi Respirar” (“This is the Air I Breathe”) to honor both the Holy Spirit, as the Breath of Life, and to celebrate the conclusion of Hispanic Heritage Month. Truly, the Holy Spirit is welcome and present at our school! n

Our newest campus addition!

This summer, we bid farewell to the beloved “Snack Shack” near our football field and made a beautiful new addition for students, faculty, staff, and Mustang sports fans to enjoy! The new pergola has already become a wonderful alumni gathering spot during fall sports, and students, faculty, and staff have loved spending time outside in our newest space. Check it out on your next visit to campus! If you are interested in naming the new pergola, please email advancement@bmhs.org

STEM at Bishop McNamara: Learning and Teaching in the new La Reine Science & Innovation Center The 2023-2024 school year marks our first full year of classes in the La Reine Science & Innovation Center (LRSIC)!

We’ve had an overwhelming response of excitement and curiosity about our new building and we continue to welcome alumni and guests to visit since our Grand Opening Celebration. In this section, we’ll share the courses taught in the LRSIC and perspectives from our incredible Science, Technology, and Engineering faculty.

“First of all, I think the LRSIC is a beautiful space, light, airy, and expansive in feel. It really makes you feel excited to be here and learn something new.

Second, I love the prep spaces. Having that dedicated area for preparation makes a huge difference and makes my use of time more efficient. Third, the plant wall and the back foyer area are really special. I find that space peaceful and I sometimes sit on the beautiful handmade benches there, just to have a moment to think.” - Jan Steeger, Science Faculty

"I have really enjoyed watching my AP Biology students build their lab skills this year. In our Cellular Energy unit, we did a photosynthesis and cellular respiration lab.

The students then discovered their own questions they wanted to answer. They then designed their own experiments to test their hypotheses and conducted the investigation. The questions students came up with were phenomenal. I had one team investigating the effect of plastics in the water on the rate of photosynthesis and another team investigating the effect of heat on the proteins used in photosynthesis. It is really beautiful to see curiosity in the students, and be able to give them the space to investigate.

"It is my goal to instill curiosity in my students. I want them to discover, explore, and study the life that surrounds us through inquiry and cooperation with each other. That way, students can apply the science to our faiths, daily lives, and contemporary issues. LRSIC really allows us to utilize lab activities to work on important skills of data interpretation, analysis, critical thinking, and collaboration so that we are becoming better-informed citizens of our world."

“Earth & Space Science looks at Earth and out into space through a lens of living in a world affected by climate change. We also discuss how having knowledge about how Earth works at various levels can be helpful to all job opportunities and experiences that our students will have in the future from working in the medical field, business, and technology to things to think about before purchasing items such as an electric vehicle or even buying a house.

Our upcoming performance assessment for our current unit will be to create a "podcast" featuring disaster stories from a selected Meteorology natural disaster (tornado, hurricane, etc) to display knowledge of general meteorology, specifics such as damage/destruction/aftermath/recovery of their chosen disaster, and generalized preventative measures people can take to stay safe.” - Katherine Ray, Science Faculty

“I hope that my classes will impart the knowledge base for anyone considering Computer Science as a discipline, but also that my classes make the information digestible and simple enough to go out in use in today’s world. The LRSIC supports that goal by being the very functional but still exciting setting for all of that to take place.

The number of clubs and activities that meet in this space is a pleasure to watch. While I know that the Main Building has always been a place for extra-curricular activities, students have really embraced the changes and adopted the LRSIC as their own as well.

Whether students are in Lab 3 gaming or they are producing something 3D-printed in Lab 4 or simply even hanging out in the atrium, I get the feeling that students are creating an identity for this space that’s inviting and creative!” - Armani Mason-Callaway ‘09, Technology and Engineering Faculty

“I hope my classes teach kids to love science and to critically think about the body and to see the process of crime investigation. I think the building inspires students to be comfortable in class so that it makes their learning process easier. Anything new and impressive looking gives the students a supportive environment to learn.”

“The goal for all of my classes is to show each student that they are capable of being a programmer. I always try to get as hands on as soon as possible and each class to show them how easy it really is to code and make simple programs. In Web Design, the first week of class is a lot of introduction to the HTML coding language, which can seem like a foreign language to students. I make sure that within the first week we’re creating very simple web pages where they have headings and include their own images. This helps give them confidence early in the semester as well as let them start exploring their creative side sooner than later - which will benefit them greatly as we progress throughout the year and start working on their final project.

In the AP Computer Science A course, we are going to be working on our first lab soon. This particular lab is called the Magpie Chatbot Lab it’s named after the Magpie bird that is considered to be one of the more intelligent creatures on the planet. The program’s purpose is to create a chatbot that allows a user to have a conversation with the computer.

It’s an amazing space to work in - Lab 3 specifically has so much more room and each student has an amazing PC setup. The dual monitors allow students to complete assignments in a more efficient manner by allowing them to have directions or examples on one screen and then have their current projects on the other screen.” - Matt Walther ‘01

strives to carry out the vision of the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Blessed Father Basil Moreau, C.S.C. “to make God known, loved, and served." Through school-wide liturgies and other forms of prayer, we invite students to share in celebration with one another, loving God through praise and worship, and receiving God’s love through Scripture and Communion. Amanda Saunders MacMillan Director of Campus Ministry Where did you go to college/graduate school? What made you choose those colleges/ universities?

I went to Neumann University, in Aston, PA. I chose Neumann because I had been in Catholic school my whole life where each student was seen, valued, and heard. I knew that I wanted to go to a college that had those same values and where I would not get lost in the crowd.

What's your favorite thing about Campus Ministry at McNamara?

My favorite thing about campus ministry at McNamara is that we have an opportunity

responsible for helping our students to know God, to know each other, and to know themselves. Our Peer Ministry program allows a small group of 12th graders to take a special class senior year on faith, justice, communication, and leadership, focusing on their personal development. These students also serve as student leaders in several ministry capacities throughout the year. Each student participates in community service hours throughout the year as part of our Holy Cross Service Program.

We checked in with the Campus Ministry team to learn more about their work, and what they are looking forward to this year.

That is not the case in most schools and I am so grateful our students get the chance to be in community with one another and learn more about themselves!

What about the Holy Cross charism most influences your spirituality or ministry?

The emphasis on being present in our community. We see this in the example of Br. Andre who held the door for many; welcoming them and praying with them. He met each person where they were and never turned anyone away. We hear this in the words of Fr. Moreau when he said that the mind cannot be educated at the expense of the heart. We are encouraged by our values: being family, building respect, educating hearts and minds, and bringing hope to weave our Holy Cross charism into our work every single day.

We are called to be present to our students and our colleagues not because we have to, but

because we want to, because it is who we are.

What are you excited about this school year?

I am excited for everything, but I think there is always something special about our senior events where we get to celebrate our graduates. Another thing I am excited for is our employee retreat that happens once every year. Being able to build community by serving, reflecting, and praying together is a highlight of the year for me!

Sam Hardwick Assistant Director of Campus Ministry Where did you go to college/graduate school? What made you choose those colleges/ universities?

I received my Bachelor's Degree from Providence College in Rhode Island. I chose Providence College for some reasons that I was unaware of and others that were only known to the Holy Spirit! The main reason for me at the time was I went to high school in Massachusetts and, once my parents moved to Maryland after I graduated from high school, I wanted to be close to where my friends were in high school.

Unknown to me then, but clear to me now, is that Providence College was the right place for me because it would allow me the space to grow in my faith when I turned to it more as I went through my college experience.

What's your favorite thing about Campus Ministry at McNamara?

This is a tough one! I love the opportunity I get throughout the year to witness students embrace their spirituality and faith during retreats and to be moved by idea that God loves them as they are.

What about the Holy Cross charism most influences your spirituality or ministry?

Brynna Sherony Campus Minister Service Coordinator Where did you go to college/graduate school? What made you choose those colleges/ universities?

I completed my undergraduate studies at PennWest California (formerly the California University of Pennsylvania). I chose this school because it had a marching band with a color guard, a campus ministry program (but wasn’t interested in a Catholic college), and it had multiple majors that I was interested in, just in case I was going to switch what I was studying.

I put a little bit more thought and prayer into my Master’s of Arts that I received from Villanova University. I chose Villanova specifically for its program in Ministry and Theology and the opportunity to earn my practicum credits through a graduate assistantship in their campus ministry.

The assistantship fully funded my degree and was a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of ministry at a college level. In the end though it’s a small miracle that I found this program and applied on time.

One of the most unique things that I have found in the Holy Cross Charism, in relation to other charisms that I have learned and been a part of (Xavierian, Dominican, Franciscan), is its emphasis on hospitality. For me, this has been the ground for all that I do in Campus Ministry at a Holy Cross school. Being hospitable for me means meeting students where they are, intentionally creating space for students to feel comfortable to be themselves with me and others, and creating programming where others can do the same.

What has been a favorite moment/story so far within your work?

There was a moment this year that was very small in the grand scheme of my work but has stuck with me for weeks now. One of the privileges that I get as a Campus Minister is to be part of a small group on our Junior 3-Day Kairos Retreat four times throughout the year. These small groups are with 7-8 juniors and we meet throughout the three days to talk and share experiences while also listening and being present to others.

One of the things I love to do once we return from Kairos is being able to say hello in the hallways to the members that I have got to know. Halfway through September this year, I came out of my office and came upon a student I had not seen since our Kairos back in March. When I saw them, they lit up and said "Hi Mr. Hardwick, I haven't seen you in so long!" We chatted for a bit about our summers and what's been going on since Kairos. Then, as we went to go our separate ways, the student asked, "Can I give you a hug?"

What's your favorite thing about Campus Ministry at McNamara?

My favorite thing about Campus Ministry at McNamara is that we get to engage students of all faith backgrounds. Every student has a different story to tell and a unique experience of spirituality and faith. I feel so lucky that BMHS, and Campus Ministry in particular, are spaces where all of these thoughts and perspectives are not only welcomed, but encouraged.

What about the Holy Cross charism most influences your spirituality or ministry?

I love that we talk about educating the whole person through head and heart at McNamara.

It is also part of the Augustinian charism, so coming from Villanova, an Augustinian school, I’ve thought about head and heart a lot. Head and heart remind me that students are always more than they appear and in order to accompany students through high school and exploring their faith I have to be attentive to both.

What has been a favorite moment/story so far within your work?

There have been a couple of service trips that I’ve taken students on where my timing has been just a little off. I either didn’t budget enough time for traffic, or students were running late to meet me, or one last bathroom opportunity ran a little long which make me feel a little frazzled when

To which I replied, "of course!" This small act was so heartwarming because it was a concrete example for me that our students are impacted by Kairos and feel loved through our work.

What are you excited about this school year?

I am really excited about our All School Liturgies this year. Each month we get together as a school at Mount Calvary Church, next to our school, to celebrate the Mass and to pray for each other and our communities. One of the awesome things I get to do is contact priests in our local area to come to our school and celebrate the Mass and share the Gospel message with our students. These priests are always so excited to come and be with our students and often tell me how impressed they are with their attentiveness and reverence during the Mass. This year we have already had the wonderful Monsignor Ray East from St. Teresa of Avila in Southeast DC, and Fr. Pawel Sass from Nativity Church in NW. I am looking forward to having both Cardinal Gregory for our January Liturgy and Auxiliary Bishop Menjivar-Ayala from the Archdiocese of Washington for the March Liturgy. Along with Fr. Brian Stacy, OFM Cap. and Board Member, Fr. Robert Boxie, III, we are really blessed by the priests who come to celebrate the Mass with us each year. I am always excited to hear their message to our students and of course, to hear our amazing choir led by Ms. Rhoda Sutton and instrumentalists led by Mrs. Dana Shieh and Mrs. Francine Amos-Hardy.

Three adjectives to describe our Mustangs: Involved, Driven, Loving we arrive to a service site late. On this particular day I was a frazzled because we were late but the students were just excited about volunteering at the retirement community that we were going to. When we arrived they couldn’t wait for the senior residents to arrive so that they could play board games and card games with them. It was grounding to see their joy and enthusiasm and reassured me that there was absolutely no reason for me to stress. The seniors who joined us were appreciative of the students’ presence and were excited for us to schedule another visit.

What are you excited about this school year?

As a new employee who is still learning the Holy Cross Service Program I have really enjoyed seeing students engage with such a wide variety of service to the community. The students that have signed up for after school service opportunities with me have all been so generous with their time and have really dug in and embraced whatever activity we were doing whether it was park clean up, playing games at retirement communities, or helping with a food distribution. I’ve enjoyed it all. It has also brought me a lot of joy to see students sharing pictures of their service projects when they submit their service hours!

Hello from the Bishop McNamara Counseling Department!

Here are the latest happenings this year with our amazing Mustangs.

On September 7th, the Counseling Department hosted a fireside chat featuring the authors of "The Black Family's Guide to Admission", Timothy Fields and Shereerm Herndon-Brown.

Fields, a veteran admissions Dean from Emory University, and Herndon-Brown, a longtime college admissions consultant, are both parents who co-authored their book to assist families in redefining "success" in the college application process. This informative event was open to parents of students across all grade levels.

The discussion delved into several pivotal topics, including PWIs (Predominantly White Institutions) and HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), early preparation strategies, the journey of scholar-athletes, the implications of the Supreme Court's decision on Affirmative Action, and the debunking of common myths in the college application process. Parents actively engaged with the authors, posing a variety of insightful questions, and even had the opportunity to have their books signed.

During the academic year, the counseling department regularly organizes dozens of college admissions meetings, providing our students with valuable opportunities to engage directly with the college representatives who evaluate their applications. To attend these sessions, our students register through the college document platform SCOIR, and they receive passes granting them access to these events.

Among the notable college visits that have already taken place are: Catholic University, the University of Michigan, Howard University, the University of Maryland, Emory University, Syracuse University, the University of Delaware, and Elon University.

As we look ahead, we're excited about upcoming visits from the University of California at Berkeley, Bowie State University, St. Edwards University, and Hampton University. n

JEREMIE DAVIS ‘14 INTERVIEW BY LONDON BECKFORD ‘24

London Bedford ‘24, aspires to go into the film media industry. This past September she interviewed Bishop McNamara alumna Jeremie Davis ‘14, who is a local producer at a digital advertising agency.

Jeremie also recently completed her first short film, entitled “RSVP”. (This interview has been edited and restructured for the purposes of this article from the original interview transcript.)

London: What's new here at McNamara from when you were a student?

London: Is there anywhere that the people could watch?

Jeremie: What's new? This building that we're in for one. When I was here, I think they were just starting to talk about it and now they have 3D printers and students' 3D work placed in the classroom. It's very interesting.

Jeremie: It's currently going to be screening at the Prince George's County Film Festival this weekend (Sept. ‘23), but we're going to be dropping a trailer soon. So I would say before the end of the year, people should be able to watch it on Vimeo. They can also follow the Instagram account, the RSVP film on Instagram. They can also check out our Seed and Spark page. This short film is for mature audiences (MA). It is at a similar maturity level to Issa Rae’s Insecure.

Jeremie: When I pulled up today, it just felt very fresh and new. When I walked in, I saw someone in a Spiderman outfit. I was like, “Oh, it must be Homecoming. So that's exciting. Do they still decorate the hallways?

London: Yes, the Seniors decoration theme was Monsters Inc. ( Jeremie) I love that. (London) And the Junior class was Spiderman.

Jeremie: Okay, so yeah, I'm so glad that traditions have remained over the years.

London: Can you tell me about what you do?

Jeremie: By day, I'm a producer at a digital advertising agency. I work with companies like Google, Amazon, and MailChimp. On the weekends, in my spare time, I am a writer and director of my own projects. I got my foundation in media when I was here and now I’ve built upon that. So that's been cool.

London: Can you give me a little overview of this short film that you recently produced?

Jeremie: The short film that I recently produced is called “RSVP”, and I wrote it at the top of the pandemic. Because everyone was stuck in the house, I found free classes online for screenwriting. I have always been interested in film, so I decided to take a course to see if I liked it. The first course I took was free, and then I ended up taking some classes at NYU, which is really cool! I just kind of liked learning about the structure of screenwriting and how to build upon a story, like when I wrote for the newspaper here at McNamara. When I wrote here I was really able to be creative.

The film classes were kind of like tapping back into that part of myself from high school and then building upon that with my actual scripts. At the time I was going through a little friendship break up, which I feel like we all go through in our adulthood. I was just reminiscing on the good times and then literally thinking about the last brunch that we had before the pandemic shut everything down, and how chaotic that was. I just found the story in it and started explaining the complexities of friendships.

We were able to complete the shoot in two days. I crowdfunded $11,000 for it and I honestly could not have done it without the people that I've met along the way. So I’ve always looked at it as a community film. If I didn't have the people who helped me do it, I would have not been able to do it myself.

In fact, I have just been accepted into Issa Rae’s Color Creative Find your People Program, (which is a training curriculum that provides specialized resources, mentorship and guidance for the seven essential disciplines in the filmmaking process). Even being here is nostalgic because it was in the cafeteria where my friend was watching her (Issa Rae’s) series, “The Mis-Adventures of an Awkward Black Girl”.

And I was like, what are you watching? And now to see how far Issa has come and to be a part of her program is crazy. We’re filming in LA, which will be fun! I’ve never filmed in LA before. We started in May. It’s been a lot of hard work, but worth it.

The film that I’m working on in this program is more serious. It’s about a mother-daughter relationship. Again, it’s a little mature but it takes the angle of a comedic love letter to mothers and daughters. We will be shooting in November and showcasing in March. So again this is a full circle moment.

Here (at McNamara) there are an abundance of possibilities that could take you down many career paths.Teachers like Ms. Keller, who I saw earlier today, gave me a platform. This school also taught me that we ought to care about others.

There are so many alumni that have gone on to do something great. I think being connected to such a powerful community like that has really allowed me to progress in my career.

London: Do you have any advice that you would give the students here so they can get the full experience out of Mac? Jeremie: Getting involved and taking in the experiences available to you are important. You are lucky to be here! Get your money's worth. Just being a part of clubs and just exploring is valuable. Figuring out who you are is like poetry. Know it's okay to fail. I feel like sometimes there's so much pressure on ourselves. It's okay if you didn't get it right this time, but you can still continue to evolve.

Benefactor: Dr. Alycia Marshall, Former faculty and alumni parent Dr. Marshall on why she continues to support Bishop McNamara: “I continue to support Bishop McNamara High School because it truly impacted my life and the life of my beloved son, Aaron Gene Marshall ‘14, otherwise known as ‘AG’. I began my professional career at Bishop McNamara High School as a young mathematics teacher, teaching Algebra. I often credit the opportunity that I had to learn and grow there early in my career through the support of amazing faculty and the leadership of Dr. Marco Clark ‘85 and Matthew Goyette who were my first principals.

I interviewed for the position with Mr. Goyette when I was pregnant with my dear Aaron so it was always meant for McNamara to be a special place for the both of us. When Aaron was ready for high school, there was no question. I knew that at McNamara, he would receive not only a firstclass education but he would be welcomed into a family where he developed strong Christian values and built the foundation to becoming a great young man. Although his first love was truly performing as an amazing hiphop artist, Aaron studied drama at McNamara, where he performed in Les Miserables, honed his stage presence skills, and was the first freshman to perform the closing act for the talent show!

Bishop McNamara High School will always have a special place in the hearts of Aaron’s family and friends as we honor his life and legacy through the AG Memorial Scholarship for students in the arts who come from single-parent homes.”

5K FOR THE ARTS — The Bishop McNamara Fine Arts

Department continued its annual tradition with this year’s 5K for the Arts, held once again at Watkins Regional Park!

Students, families, faculty, staff, and friends gathered together for the race and warmed up with the help of Justice McDaniel ‘26, and her mother, Mrs. Felicia McDaniel.

This year’s race involved a special challenge from President/ CEO Dr. John Barnhardt: any student who beat his time would get a dress down day! Congratulations to Xavier Timmons ‘26, who crossed the finish line before Dr. Barnhardt and happily earned his prize.

At the conclusion of the race, Dr. Barnhardt surprised the top 20 student finishers with dress down day passes as well, and Director of Fine Arts Mrs. Dana Shieh gave a special prize to the 100th finisher.

In total, the event raised over $16,000 for our Fine Arts programs! Congratulations to our top place runners and fundraisers, and thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, and/or donated. We’ll see you at next year’s 5K! n

Coaches’ Reports INTRODUCING

COACH RON JAMES! Mr. Ronald “Ron” James recently joined Bishop McNamara High School as the new Head Girls’ Basketball Coach. Mr. James currently serves as the Director of Team Takeover Girls Basketball, having developed and grown the program since 2012. He has achieved over 650 wins in the past eleven years as the Head Coach of the Team Takeover 17u Nike EYBL and Team Takeover 8th grade Nike Jr. EYBL teams. Mr. James is also a proud Bishop McNamara parent of Kennedy James ‘24 and a regular presence on campus.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in the upcoming girls’ basketball season?

A: I’m really looking forward to the competitions on a national and regional level. I’m looking forward to seeing the young ladies grow in this game of basketball through their play. I’m looking forward to showcasing a talented and exciting group of young ladies on the basketball court. AND I’m really looking forward to having the backing of the fan support within the Bishop McNamara community! I’m also looking forward to the challenge of winning the WCAC Championship and a national championship!

Here’s a quick Q&A with our newest coach!

Q: Why did you choose to bring your talents to McNamara?

A: I’ve always been an active, silent partner with the BMHS girls’ basketball program. Some of the ladies play on my club teams during the summer months, and I thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to join forces with the school as a whole to build on its rich tradition and success. It’s an honor to be a part of the BMHS coaching community and to explore that side of the Bishop McNamara Athletics program.

As a parent, I’ve been very pleased at my daughter Kennedy’s growth within the community and within the school as a whole. I have gained an understanding of the school’s values for students and for studentathletes. As a parent, I’ve always had a boatload of gratitude that my daughter has been able to have the experience of being a Mustang.

Now as a coach AND a parent, I think it gives me added value of experience that I can bring to the program.

Q: What can the fans look forward to? What should they get excited about?

A: The fans can look forward to the young ladies playing basketball at a very, very high level - it’s fast-paced, highly skilled athletes playing together with a common goal of nothing less than success for all. If they like fast-paced, up and down, in your face, electrifying basketball, then we will definitely have games you don’t want to miss!

Q: What are your hopes for the girls on the team this year?

My hope is that they find the value of being a member of a team – that they are able to find and utilize their individual strengths to build the team’s strength, and to work towards both team and individual goals.

Congratulations to Kiylah Presley ‘24, who received her commemorative 2024 Under Armour Next All-America Volleyball Game jersey on Tuesday, October 24th, recognizing her selection to high school volleyball’s premier all-star showcase event.

The Under Armour Next All-America Volleyball Game annually welcomes the country’s top high school volleyball players for an immersive experience designed to celebrate their achievements and prepare them for the next steps of their athletic careers. In total, 24 players converge in Orlando to learn, train and compete against their peers in the only national showcase of its kind in the country. Beginning in 2020, the Under Armour Next All-America Volleyball Game was held in conjunction with the All-America Football Game and, starting with the 2022 contest, the game has been televised nationally by ESPN. This year’s game will be held on January 2nd, 2024 at 4:30 ET!

On Saturday, September 30, 2023, the Bishop McNamara Family came together for the 26th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held in the Andy Mona ‘82 Center.

Since 1997, Bishop McNamara has formally recognized the personal and professional accomplishments, community service and leadership of former Bishop McNamara and La Reine High School scholarathletes. Members of Bishop McNamara‘s Hall of Fame exemplify the lessons they learned in athletics – teamwork, integrity, the dignity of labor, discipline and determination – in their work and community. This

year’s class of inductees was no exception.

During the ceremony we took a special moment to recognize the 1973 BMHS championship football team, who were the honorary captains at our Homecoming game following the ceremony. Team members loved getting together to reminisce and honor the 50th anniversary of their big win.

The teammates and loved ones of James Belk ‘99 also gathered, in his memory, to honor his legacy. Other individual honorees included Chauntise Wright ‘04, Monica (Mason) Townsend ‘09 and Talib Zanna ‘09.

The 2008 Girls’ Basketball Championship Team has a long list of amazing women who are doing phenomenal things. Their current occupations speak for themselves: homicide detective, neuroscientist, nurse practitioner, COO, CEOs and more. The Bishop McNamara Hall of Fame continues to be an annual testament not only to our incredible student-athletes, but also to the things they go on to accomplish as Bishop McNamara and La Reine alumni.

The Tony Johnson Unsung Hero Award is presented annually to a member of the Bishop McNamara High School community who most exemplifies all those characteristics demonstrated by Tony Johnson - a servant heart, hard work, dedication, loyalty, mentorship, faith, academic excellence, stewardship, and a commitment to the growth and development of our studentathletes.

This year’s Tony Johnson Award recipient is Ms. Rosie Henderson! Rosie is an individual who usually stays under the radar. She has helped to serve our football & baseball programs over the years. Her generosity of time, energy, food, or whatever is needed can always be counted on by the young men in the programs. Rosie is always a constant prior to team departures, at games, after games, or whatever else has been needed. She always brings a positive attitude!

Faith Harrison ‘23 traveled to Mobile, Alabama this summer to participate in the 66th Distinguished Young Women National Finals. Faith was one of fifty representatives competing for scholarships and the chance to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2023. During the finals, she participated in community service projects, teambuilding activities, and rehearsals for the three-night scholarship competition. n Jim Dean ‘74, president of the University of New Hampshire and interim chancellor of the University System of New Hampshire, gave a TEDx presentation this summer entitled, “Why College Students Need Shakespeare Now More Than Ever”. During his presentation, he paid a special tribute to Brother Peter Vukmanic, C.S.C., former BMHS Science Department Chair and Science Club Moderator. Congratulations to Tiffany Norwood LR ‘85 for recently being named one of the 23 Most Influential Women of 2023 according to Startups Magazine! n Congratulations to Colleen Cribbs ‘06! Colleen is a wing and flanker on the Colorado Gray Wolves, a women’s rugby club, and they recently successfully defended their Women’s Premiere League title! The Women’s Premiere League is currently the top league for women’s rugby with seven clubs. This is Colleen’s third championship with the team. n

Thank you to Pittsburgh Steelers offensive lineman Spencer Anderson ‘18! Spencer recently visited our campus to say hello, play chess with the Chess Club, and share his experiences and wisdom with the football team. We’ll be cheering him on as the NFL season continues! n

Terry O’Connor Scholarship Tournament The O’Connor and Desmarais (Carl Desmarais ‘74) families held a pickleball tournament in October to benefit the Terry O’Connor ‘74 Memorial Endowed Scholarship. It was a wonderful afternoon to come together and play pickleball for a great cause! You can donate to the scholarship online through the BMHS website.

This summer, the BMHS Advancement Team went on a small countrywide tour, carrying the BMHS loving spirit with us to Atlanta, New York City, Myrtle Beach, and Sacramento. Each city brought out amazing alumni spanning from the Class of 1973 2015. There were artists, entrepreneurs, doctors, financial advisors, non-profit emerging leaders, and more.

It has been great to see our alumni networking with each other and meeting fellow BMHS Family members they didn’t even know lived in their city. Our alumni are doing so many amazing things worldwide.
