Dear Bishop Manogue Community,
It is with deep humility and great enthusiasm that I write to you as the newly appointed President of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. I am honored to join this exceptional community—one rooted in faith, grounded in tradition, and dedicated to the formation of young men and women who strive to match the mountains that surround us–Homines Sicut Montes.
As I begin this new chapter, I find myself reflecting on a question posed by Jesus in the Gospel of Mark: “Who do you say that I am?” It is a question of identity and purpose, and one that has guided much of my religious life and work in Catholic education. Over the course of my 35 years as a Christian Brother and 30 years in educational leadership, I have served in a variety of roles — from classroom teacher to district administrator in eleven schools across the country. The mission has always remained the same: to serve young people with compassion, conviction, and Christ-centered purpose.
At Bishop Manogue, I hope to build upon the incredible legacy of leaders who have come before me, whose contributions have shaped the heart of this school. I do not come to change the world, but rather to add to the good news that continues to unfold at Bishop Manogue every day.
In my new role, my focus is on three key areas that reflect the heart of Catholic education:
• Hospitality: Ensuring every member of our community, from students, families, and alumni to visitors and new friends, feels genuinely welcomed and valued.
• Service: Reinforcing the importance of faith in action and encouraging students to live out their values.
• Partnerships: Building meaningful collaborations with partnering institutions and philanthropic supporters to enhance academic and career pathways for our students.
As for who I am? That will reveal itself over time. But I am consistent, committed, and grounded in a lifelong mission to serve.
In the early years of my religious life, we received our assignments slipped under our doors on the Feast of the Annunciation. A er reading it, we were instructed to return to the vow formula hanging in our rooms and read the final line: “I promise and pray that, with God’s help, I shall complete this assignment faithfully.” On January 29 of this year, I made that promise once again…and I meant every word.
Please keep me in your prayers as I begin this work, and know that I am keeping each of you in mine.
With gratitude and faith,
Brother Christopher D. Hall, C.F.C President Bishop Manogue Catholic High School
June 6, 2025 – What a great day to be a Miner!
For twenty years, I have watched our students enter into our football stadium with cheers from family and friends, walk across a beautiful stage, to graduate and o icially become Miner Alumni. I have watched them smile, cry, laugh through excellent teacher and student speeches, stand excitedly as that first diploma line is called, and fill with energy as they rise for the last time as a class to be announced as graduates. The tradition, the legacy, and the love that fill our graduation make each one special. But this year, hit just a little harder.
As much as I am a part of Bishop Manogue, I am not an alumna. My Alma Mater is Marist Catholic High School in Eugene, Oregon. I love where I went to school…and yet there is a part of me that has felt I am missing out on a special piece of Bishop Manogue because I am not a Miner Alum. (This is saying something…there is not much I am not a part of at Manogue, and I am not a person who su ers from FOMO.) However, this year, a big piece of me joins the Miner Alumni, and I could not be more proud or excited.
On June 6, 2025, Jacob Christopher Thoreson graduated from Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. For all of you 2006 and 2007 graduates, yes, that is the baby boy I had when you were finishing high school. Get ready, your twenty-year reunion is approaching. You’re welcome.
It is an honor to have one of the best parts of Marc and me join your alumni community…I finally feel like we have a secret “in.” We are beyond thankful for the teachers, administrators, parents, coaches, and especially alumni who have supported him and helped shape him on his way. You have all made his journey incredible. What is even more special is that I know you do this for many students. Your presence, dedication, and commitment to the Miner family truly have an impact. You show them what family means, and that is invaluable. Keep showing them, it is what makes us special.
Many blessings to all of you, and I look forward to seeing you at our alumni events this year with my new “in.” .
Bri Thoreson Principal Bishop Manogue Catholic High School
Hi Miners!
As a proud member of the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School Class of 2010, I’m honored to introduce myself as your new Development Associate-Alumni Engagement.
Bishop Manogue has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a student, I was deeply involved in academics, campus life, and athletics, particularly the volleyball program, which played a major role in shaping my high school experience. My connection to this community runs deep: Coming from a legacy family of Miner graduates, including my parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Both my grandparents and parents are members of the Bishop Manogue Hall of Fame and have been lifelong supporters of Catholic education. Through their example, I developed a strong commitment to faith, community, and service.
As the head coach of the varsity volleyball team and former Bishop Manogue teacher, I’m reminded each day of how much this school has given me, and I am grateful for the opportunity to preserve the rich traditions that define our Miner community.
Now, in my new Alumni Engagement role, I’m excited to reconnect with our incredible alumni network. Whether you graduated five years ago or fi y, you are an important part of the story of Bishop Manogue. I look forward to creating more opportunities for you to engage with the school, reconnect with classmates, and celebrate the legacy we all share.
Thank you for the warm welcome I’ve already received. More to come soon!
With Miner Pride,

GRANDPARENTS AND GODPARENTS DAY 2025: A CELEBRATION OF LOVE AND LEGACY
On Friday, March 7, 2025, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School was filled with joy, laughter, and heartfelt moments as we celebrated Grandparents’ and Godparents’ Day, a cherished tradition that continues to grow each year. The Chapel overflowed with the warm presence of grandparents, godparents, and their beloved students.
The celebration began with a beautiful Mass, honoring the deep bond between generations. A erward, students proudly escorted their guests to the Student Community Center, where they enjoyed light refreshments, mingling, and a photo booth.
Grandparents and Godparents Day is always one of the most anticipated events of the year. It’s an opportunity for students to share their campus, classrooms, and Miner pride with those who’ve supported and guided them through life.
On Thursday, April 10, 2025, Bishop Manogue’s Campus Ministry hosted an inspiring Service Fair that brought together 18 local organizations showcasing and highlighting their mission and service opportunities.
Students had the opportunity to explore a wide range of community service programs, connect directly with representatives, and “shop” for volunteer opportunities that aligned with their passions and interests. The fair created a meaningful space for students to engage with causes they care about while learning how they can make a positive impact beyond the classroom.
It was a wonderful a ernoon filled with purpose, connection, and the true

2025 NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS
We are proud to recognize three of our outstanding students and recent graduates: Giana Brunetti, National Merit Scholar,
Sophia Rauenhorst, National Merit Finalist. These three students are recognized as part of the prestigious 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Giana is among approximately 7,000 students nationwide who have been recognized as National Merit Scholarship winners, earning scholarship awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, partnering colleges, or corporate sponsors. She has been awarded a National Merit University of Nevada, Reno Scholarship. Additionally, Lucas and Sophia were named National Merit Finalists, among approximately 15,000 other Finalists nationwide.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is one of the most esteemed academic competitions in the nation, recognizing top-performing high school students for their exceptional academic achievement, PSAT/NMSQT scores, leadership, and extracurricular involvement. Each year, approximately 1.3 million students enter the program. Students enter the program by taking the PSAT/NMSQT in their junior year. Top scorers are named Semifinalists based on state cuto s. From there, students must submit a detailed application to advance to Finalist status, which includes academic records, a recommendation, and a personal essay.
We are incredibly proud of these exceptional students for their dedication, hard work, and Miner spirit.

AS STRONG AS THE MOUNTAINS: FAITH
’
Father Charles Durante ‘77, known to many as “Father Chuck,” is a profoundly influential and deeply cherished figure in the Bishop Manogue community. A recent inductee to the 2024 Bishop Manogue Hall of Fame, his journey with the school began as a student and has since evolved into a legacy of leadership, advocacy, and compassion for his fellow Bishop Manogue Miners. From the early days performing in school-wide choral productions as a student, to his pivotal roles as the school Chaplain, founder and director of the Campus Ministry program, and interim President, Fr. Chuck has woven his spirit and dedication into the fabric of Bishop Manogue. As one of the first Alumni clergy and a founding force behind Bishop Manogue’s immensely successful Campus Ministry program, he has transformed the lives of thousands of students through his calling.
In an interview with Father Chuck, he shares how Bishop Manogue’s school motto, “Homines Sicut Montes,” impacted and shaped his path as a student, mentor, and leader.
FAITH, Continued from p. 17
Origin & Meaning
Miner Messenger: Do you know the story of how Homines Sicut Montes became Bishop Manogue’s motto?
Fr. Chuck: I don’t know exactly how this motto got chosen for our school, but my educated guess is that Bishop Thomas Gorman, then Bishop for the Diocese of Reno, chose this motto due to the beautiful Sierra Nevadas that were a backdrop for the first location of the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School and remain this backdrop to this day, even in the high school’s third location. It must be made clear that “men” here refers to both men and women.
Miner Messenger: What does Homines Sicut Montes “Give us men and women to match our mountains” mean to you personally and spiritually?
Fr. Chuck: I think it calls for our Bishop Manogue youth to match the beauty and majesty of the mountains they gaze upon every day. It was a wonderful reminder and challenge for me during my days at the school “on the hill,” both as a student and many years later as chaplain. The motto followed me to the current campus location as well.
Spiritual & Symbolic Connections
Miner Messenger: How does this motto connect to our Catholic faith and the school’s mission?
Fr. Chuck: To match the beauty and majesty of those mountains means to be full of integrity, strength, and faith. It means we live out the teachings and values of Catholic Christianity outside the walls of the school–as students, as student families, and as alumni.
Miner Messenger: Are there scriptural or theological ideas that align with the idea of “matching the mountains” in strength, faith, or purpose?
Fr. Chuck: The first one that comes to mind is Psalm 121: “I li my eyes to the mountains, from where shall come my help.” The other is the many stories in the gospel that tell of Jesus going up to the mountains to pray–He gathered strength and wisdom there. Each time He descended, He took an important and decisive action.
Ties to School History & Legacy
Miner Messenger: With your vast involvement with the school from student to alumnus, then school chaplain to interim president, how do you think the motto has
Fr. Chuck, Class of 77
influenced school-wide decisions, programs, traditions, or spiritual formation?
Fr. Chuck: I suppose, like many mottos or even mission statements, these words, too, got lost or placed in the background o en enough. However, I think it remained a driving force, even if slightly behind the scenes. One of my mentors and the longest priestly presence ever at Bishop Manogue was Fr. Benedict Williams, in his later years, a monsignor. He taught religion, music, chorus, and Latin, and was the sophomore moderator most of his 25+ years there. Fr. Benedict Williams o en referred to this motto and challenged us to live up to it. The motto is a sort of backbone to the school with its foundation in faith.
Design & Physical Space
Miner Messenger: You were closely involved in the design of the school’s chapel—how does Homines Sicut Montes influence or appear in the design?
Fr. Chuck: The first thing that one notices in the chapel is the towering stained glass windows that pull your eyes upward, like the mountains. The saints who are depicted in those windows all lived up to the motto, long before the school or motto existed. The high ceilings, reminiscent of the original chapel
“on the hill” continue the sense of ascending. The beautiful hardwood of the ambo and altar, created by men (Norm Dianda and others) who were also models of commitment to the school and to our faith.
At the core of our faith lies the Eucharist; thus, the altar extends outward toward the community, as in like manner the Sierras extend arms embracing all of us in
the valley. What a wonderful image of God’s love embracing us and li ing us all toward the magnificent mountains God created!
Legacy & Hope for the Future
Miner Messenger: What do you hope future generations of students take away from Homines Sicut Montes?
Fr. Chuck: The mountains were here long before any of us – a powerful reminder of our call to humility in their shadow and a powerful challenge for us to continue to look up, to look beyond our own noses and immediate wants and concerns to the vastness God has given us to nurture, now and always.

BISHOP MANOGUE ALUMNI + SUPPORTERS
This feature highlights Bishop Manogue graduates who have made a lasting impact through advocacy, leadership, service, creativity, and more. Some we remember and honor posthumously, while others continue to distinguish themselves in their fields. Each reflects the strength and character of our alumni community.
Katie Histing '19
May 1, 2001-November 25, 2024
A LEGACY OF HOPE AND LIGHT
Katie Histing '19 was only 17 when she was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. Over the course of six years, she endured 17 surgeries, 94 blood transfusions, a stem cell transplant, and countless rounds of chemotherapy. Through it all, Katie never lost her smile…or her spirit.
A proud 2019 Bishop Manogue graduate, Katie transformed her battle into a mission. She became a passionate childhood cancer advocate, using her voice and her art to inspire hope in others. She combined her love of nature, creativity, and service to launch Katie's Collective, a small business that sold her artwork and donated proceeds to organizations that had supported her journey.
Katie was a featured speaker and co-host at "Curefest" in Washington, D.C., in September 2024, a longtime goal she finally achieved. Just two months later, Katie passed away at the age of 23,
surrounded by love, family, and the countless lives she had touched. Her impact lives on through her story, her artwork, and her family's continued advocacy in her honor.
Alongside her father, Rob, who is also a cancer survivor, Katie and her dad were the first father-daughter pair in the Evoke Warriors program, which empowers cancer fighters through strength and mindset training. Katie received the group's "Most Inspiring Warrior" award, a title well-earned by her grace, grit, and generosity.
Katie's legacy continues to shine. She was posthumously honored as one of Reno Tahoe Young Professionals Network's "20 under 40" and received the 2025 "Courage Award" from My Hometown Heroes. Her parents, Lynn and Rob, now carry her mission forward, sharing her story at cra fairs and concerts across the country and encouraging blood donations through the "Make May Matter" campaign, a tribute to the 90+ transfusions that gave Katie energy to live fully, even while in treatment.
Katie's Collective has expanded far beyond Northern Nevada. With the support of the band Beach Bunny, whose lead singer became a friend, Katie's art and message have toured the country, bringing her story to cities like New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. To explore her artwork and carry her message of courage forward, visit Katie's Collective on Etsy, shop name: KatiesCollectiveUS. Supporting the shop is a tribute to Katie's spirit and a way to keep her hopefilled mission alive.
"Katie lived with joy, even in the midst of unthinkable pain," said her mom, Lynn Histing. "She never stopped fighting, and she never stopped living."
Michael Quilici ’76
A MINER WHO MADE IT HAPPEN
For more than two decades, Michael Quilici '76 dedicated his professional life to advancing the mission of the Catholic Church in Northern Nevada. As the Chief Development O icer for the Diocese of Reno, Mike played a pivotal role in shaping the future of Catholic education, stewardship, and expansion across the region.
Among his most notable contributions was his leadership in the development of Bishop Manogue's current campus, which opened in 2004. From the earliest planning stages to fundraising, construction, and ongoing support, Mike was instrumental in turning a long-held dream into a reality. His vision and dedication helped create the premier campus that serves our students today.
In celebration of Mike's retirement and in honor of his service, the Diocese of Reno established the Michael Quilici Scholarship to support students from Little Flower School who wish to attend Bishop Manogue. If you want to contribute to this scholarship, please contact the Bishop Manogue Development O ice (Jill.Johnson@BishopManogue.org).
A proud Bishop Manogue alum, Mike has never strayed far from the community that helped shape him. As he steps into retirement, we honor his legacy of service, generosity, and unwavering faith, and we wish him all the best on the road ahead!
Brother Matthew Cunningham, F.S.R.
August 8, 1939-June 24, 2024
HONORING A LIFE DEVOTED TO CATHOLIC EDUCATION
For more than five decades, Brother Matthew Cunningham, F.S.R., served as a pillar of Catholic education in Northern Nevada. His gentle presence, intellectual rigor, and unwavering faith le an indelible mark on thousands of students, families, and educators, especially within the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School community.
Brother Matthew first arrived at Bishop Manogue in 1970 to teach religion, later returning in 1982 to serve as principal for six years. He also held the role of school president from 1993 to 1996. Whether in the classroom or leadership roles, Brother Matthew was known for cultivating a culture of academic excellence, spiritual depth, and compassionate mentorship.
His influence extended far beyond Bishop Manogue. As Superintendent of Catholic Schools from 1990 to 2000 and later as Chancellor of the Diocese of Reno, Brother Matthew helped shape Catholic education
across the region. He was also instrumental in supporting rural mission parishes through his work with Frontier of the Faith and served as Novice Master for his religious community, the Brothers of the Holy Rosary.
Those who knew Brother Matthew describe him as deeply faithful and remarkably humble. His commitment to evangelical counsel and quiet, steadfast leadership made him both a spiritual guide and a trusted educator. He was happiest in the classroom, teaching not just facts but by example, embodying the Gospel values he encouraged in his students.
Brother Matthew o icially retired in 2014, reflecting then: "My life here in Nevada has been very di erent than what I had envisioned when I came here. I have greatly enjoyed all the forms of ministry that I was involved in… Reno has become my home, and coming here was the right choice for me."
We are grateful for Brother Matthew's life and legacy, including his years of dedication to Catholic education, his steady hand during times of transition, and his lifelong devotion to teaching children well.
Portions of this tribute are adapted from Brother Matthew Cunningham's obituary, originally published on the Walton's Funeral Home website.
Tony Benna '98
A SUNDANCE STANDOUT WITH RENO ROOTS
This year, Bishop Manogue alum Tony Benna '98 captured the attention of the international film community at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where his feature documentary André is an Idiot won both the Audience Award and the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award in the U.S. Documentary category.
The film, described by the Sundance Institute as "filled with heart and humor," follows the final years of André Ricciardi, a friend and fellow creative diagnosed with terminal cancer. Ricciardi requested that Benna tell his story, not as a somber account but as a comedy. The result is a profoundly human, rule-
breaking documentary that blends live-action, stopmotion animation, and irreverent humor to explore life, death, and everything in between.
Benna, who grew up in Reno, began experimenting with film as a teen, shooting skateboarding videos and stop-motion shorts. "That's where my love of filmmaking really started," he told the Reno Gazette Journal.
A er graduating from Bishop Manogue, he studied film and animation in San Francisco, where his a inity for storytelling through animation took hold.
The road to André is an Idiot took four years, three in production and one in post. In the words of the Sundance Institute's Lucy Spicer, the film "stays true to its wacky, creative subject," and "bends genres and breaks molds to create something original," a goal Benna wholeheartedly embraces.
For Tony Benna, storytelling is both a cra and a calling. "We need filmmakers because films give us unique and diverse perspectives," he said in the Sundance Institute interview. "With that, we gain a better understanding of one another."
From skate videos in Reno to standing ovations in Park City, Benna's journey is a
testament to the power of creativity, humor, and heart…and a reminder to all Miners to follow their passion wherever it may lead.

Makenzie Caufield ‘15
2025 NATIONAL TEACHER OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to Bishop Manogue alumna Makenzie Caufield, who has been named the 2025 National Teacher of the Year!
Nominated by field supervisors and selected through thousands of votes nationwide, Makenzie—now a 3rd grade teacher—is recognized for the deep compassion, commitment, and impact she brings to her classroom every day.
Before entering education, Makenzie worked in child advocacy and domestic violence prevention, experiences that continue to shape her trauma-informed, student-centered approach to teaching. She creates a classroom where every child feels seen, safe, and supported—emotionally, socially, and academically.
“Teaching is not just a job for me—it’s my identity,” she says. “I want my students to feel heard and valued.”
Makenzie will receive a $5,000 grand prize, and she plans to continue expanding her impact by mentoring new educators and advocating for student mental health.
We are proud to honor Makenzie—a true Miner making a di erence.

2025 TRADITION AWARD RECIPIENTS
The annual Tradition Awards bring together generations of Miner graduates during the Bishop Manogue Graduation Ceremony. The awards are given to current graduates whose parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are alumni of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. In the 2025 graduating class, 17 families were recognized for their continued legacy as Bishop Manogue Miners!
Manogue’s First Annual Day of Giving – A Major Success for our Miners
Our first annual Day of Giving was an incredible display of Miner spirit, generosity, and unity, thanks in large part to the enthusiasm and engagement of our amazing students and parents!
Each class set up themed donation tables, creating a fun and spirited atmosphere to encourage their classmates to donate and be part of something bigger. From decorations to friendly competition, students took ownership of the day and rallied with their peers to invest in their education.
In addition to their on-campus e orts, students also lent their creativity and voice to the Day of Giving by participating in a series of inspiring video snippets to motivate faculty, sta , families, and the greater Bishop Manogue community to join in. Their words and energy brought our message to life, and it worked!
Thanks to this incredible collective e ort, $44,766 was raised in just 24 hours, which will be immediately invested back into Bishop Manogue Catholic High School! Even more inspiring, nearly $20,000 ($19,752 to be exact) of that total came directly from Bishop Manogue students.
Generous contributions from families, alumni, and friends added more than $15,000 to our total. Bishop Manogue is especially grateful to Keith O’Donnell and Sabrina Belleci for providing the $10,000 matching gi that helped make this day such a success.
We are so proud of our students for their participation and for showing the power of community, commitment, and Miner pride. What an unforgettable kicko to a new tradition of giving!

IN MEMORIAM
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” —Psalm 73:26
Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is more than a school—it’s a legacy of faith, family, and purpose that lives on in every classroom, on every field, and in the hearts of our community.
Since the first graduating class in 1950, thousands of students have walked beneath our iconic arches, each beginning a journey rooted in tradition and driven by a calling to lead, serve, and shine. Our alumni have gone on to become educators, engineers, parents, artists, entrepreneurs, and leaders in every field—each one carrying the Miner spirit into the world.
For more than 75 years, generations of supporters, friends, and families have stood alongside us, helping to build and sustain the mission of Bishop Manogue. Their generosity, faith, and commitment have helped shape our school into what it is today, a place where young people grow into who God created them to be.
We also pause to remember those members of our community who are no longer with us. Though they may be gone, their legacy continues to guide us. We feel their presence in every Mass, every milestone, and every Miner victory. It is through their example that we move forward—united in purpose, proud of our past, and hopeful for the future we continue to build together.
Bishop Manogue family, friends, and alumni, we’ve said goodbye to in the winter and spring of 2025.
