Mission Statement

Educating through faith, leadership, knowledge, and compassion.

Philosophy

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is a faith-based community working together for the education of all students. Catholic values and ideals are the basis for all instruction and interaction. The school community, together with parents, alumni, and benefactors fosters an environment that supports academic achievement, spiritual growth, self-motivation, extra-curricular involvement, and Christian service. We’re decreasing our environmental impact by only sending one magazine per household.

PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Dear Alumni and Friends of Bishop Manogue, 75 years. Can you believe it?! 2023 marks 75 years of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. 75 years of making a difference in the lives of so many young people in our region. 75 years of pushing our students to achieve their best academically. 75 years of training to be fierce competitors but humble in victory and learning to never quit in defeat. 75 years of coming together in love and faith under our Lord and Savior. Since we opened our doors in 1948 we have seen tremendous growth. Growth in students, growth in community service, growth in family, and growth in generosity. Bishop Manogue is more than just a private Catholic school; it is a community, a way of life. It’s a family built around faith, and the word is out. The first class to graduate from Bishop Manogue in 1950 had just 14 graduates. I am proud to share that at the start of the 2023-2024 school year, Bishop Manogue welcomed the largest student body to date with 780 enrolled students. From the original Flick Ranch campus, to the “school on the hill,” and now to the present day where our campus sits on five beautiful acres, we continue to focus on improving and expanding our facilities to ensure our campus meets the needs of our growing Miner family. One of the many attributes that make Bishop Manogue so appealing and special is the quaint atmosphere. Our small class sizes allow for a more targeted and personalized learning experience. In improving our campus, the goal is to maintain that small sense of community while sharing the greatness of our faith-based education with more families and students in our region. There has never been a more crucial time for Catholic education and the students we serve. Our students have never been more important. The truth is, we need them to go out and continue to make this world what it could be and what it should be because this nation needs more Bishop Manouge Miners. Faith. Dedication. Community. Family. That’s who we have been for 75 years, and that’s what it means to be a Miner. I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas season filled with love and joy and a New Year of good health. We look forward to seeing you around campus at one of our many school and alumni events. As always, I appreciate your continued support of Bishop Manogue as we continue on this path of positive growth. We look forward to keeping you abreast of our progress and as always, ask for your prayers. Blessings,

Cheers to you, Bishop Manogue. 75 years strong! Bishop Manogue is a Google school. For those of you who have long history with this school, you know this is a far cry from the paper and pencil records we kept to mark grades and transcripts under Mrs. Marilyn O’Gorman’s watchful eye. All of our teachers are Google Level II Certified and we run an almost paperless campus…to those current and former staff members who fought with our copy machines, we made it. As a Google school, it is only natural that I Googled what the number 75 means when I began to write this note. The first return said that 75 is a message of hope and optimism for future endeavors and that you have to have faith in the divine presence in your life. This definitely is not a Catholic resource or reference (my grandmothers would be scolding me if they were here), but it is an amazing message for us to embrace as we move forward into 75 more years of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. It is through the wisdom, hope, and optimism of our alumni and friends that we have made it to this point. That we have grown from a small-ish school with a big name to a big-ish school with an even bigger name. We have moved from floppy discs to cloud-based technology, and we have an ingenuity space where students can just “create” for the future. And that we have maintained who we are, rooted in our Catholic faith, traditional values, and moral code. We are a proud 75, a beautiful mix of the future and our past; ready for the next challenge. And just so we are clear…I did seek a Catholic reference for 75 too (yes, I am still afraid of my grandmothers). Psalm 75 reminds us that we need to have confidence in God’s judgment and be thankful for His work. Lord, we are thankful for everyone in our Bishop Manogue family and we are ready for wherever you lead us next. Amen.

MINER MOMENTS Highlights from 2023

Throughout the spring, summer, and fall of 2023, Bishop Manogue students and staff have dedicated their time and energy to focusing on academics, athletics, and co-curricular activities. Bishop Manogue is proud to highlight just some of those successes and looks forward to many more as the school year continues. 1

MINERS ON A MISSION 1

In June 2023, Bishop Manogue students closed out the school year and just days later hopped on a plane to Costa Rica for the annual mission trip. The 32 students were split into two groups of 16 and each spent a week in La Fortuna ministering and helping at a local school and orphanage. While at the school, Miner students and chaperones did mostly manual labor helping with painting fences and staining play structures, raking leaves and cutting shrubs. There was even time to play soccer with the school children. Most of their time, however, was spent at the orphanage that housed 17 children. Manogue students created amazing bonds with the kids and were honored and humbled to be able to spend such quality time with the orphans.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for more than 7,000 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring. Congratulations, Madeleine and Ian!

RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL ART SHOW 3

At the esteemed Reno-Tahoe International Art (RTIA) Show, a group of accomplished AP Art students and hand-picked photography students secured an exhibition space. Bishop Manogue proudly had five students named as finalists, with Abigail Kolber earning a notable distinction – a $1500 credit to showcase her work at the 2024 RTIA Show. CELEBRATING 75 YEARS AT B.A.S.H. 2023! stage. As the sun began to set behind the beautifully lit Bishop Manogue Chapel, guests took their seats at tables adorned with green velvet linens and fresh flower centerpieces to begin enjoying their family-style meal crafted by Blend Catering.

O

n the beautiful evening of Saturday, September 23, 2023, Bishop Manogue hosted its most noteworthy annual fundraiser of the year, BASH (Building A Scholastic Heritage). This year’s BASH held a special significance honoring 75 years of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School and its outstanding scholastic and athletic achievements. More than 500 supporters came together on the Bishop Manogue campus to celebrate and support efforts in fundraising for the crucial Tuition Assistance Program. When guests arrived, they were greeted by current Bishop Manogue students who provided a live and interactive trivia game, featuring fun and interesting facts about Bishop Manogue throughout the past 75 years. From there, guests enjoyed delicious passed appetizers and a bar featuring the event’s signature cocktail, the classic French 75. Just inside the doors of the newly renovated Huelsmann Student Commons, supporters found an impressive silent auction display before making their way outside to the cocktail hour in the outdoor courtyard, while the live band Henry Undercover played welcoming music on the event

Student emcees Ben Enos, Ben Scolari, Brycen Bowers, and Lily Haack led the evening’s program that started with a blessing from Most Rev. Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg. As dinner progressed, attendees heard incredibly heartfelt remarks from both Bishop Manogue President Matthew Schambari and Principal Bri Thoreson. Mrs. Thoreson’s speech was capped off beautifully with a champagne toast to commemorate Bishop Manogue’s outstanding 75 years and was accompanied by a student-led sparkler parade lighting up the night sky. The evening’s program finished with a dynamic live auction led by longtime Bishop Manogue friend, Jimmy Minor, and another amazing musical set by Henry Undercover that had guests up and out of their seats dancing. The heart of the school, and all who love and support it, could be felt throughout the entire evening. It was a wonderful opportunity for longtime supporters, and a host of new friends, to come together as a Bishop Manogue family and raise more than $370,000 to support the school’s crucial Tuition Assistance Program. The funds raised support the 1 in 4 students who require financial assistance to attend Bishop Manogue, as well as enhance opportunities for those interested in the highly

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS and pivotal decision to establish a brand new institution, requiring immense support from Northern Nevada’s Catholic community. The school was aptly named after Bishop Patrick Manogue, a former miner-turned-priest who had dedicated twenty years of service in Virginia City before his consecration as a Bishop.

ince its inception, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School has played a pivotal role in the hearts, minds, and lives of Northern Nevada families, nurturing a legion of alumni who have gone on to lead companies, influence policies, contribute to groundbreaking research, and foster compassionate households. Through times of triumph and adversity and in moments of celebration and sorrow, the spirit of the Bishop Manogue family, 75 years in the making, has grown stronger than ever. The Miner community forever holds enduring lessons, cherished memories, and timeless

traditions as the school embarks on the next 75 years with a renewed commitment to its mission of providing a faith-filled education. Here, students are celebrated, challenged, and inspired to lead with grace. The Humble Beginning (1948-1957)

On September 13, 1948, Bishop Manogue Catholic High School opened its doors, welcoming an initial enrollment of around 60 students. Nestled on diocese-owned land at the Flick Ranch in East Sparks, the former ranch house underwent a remarkable transformation. The large bedrooms were converted into classrooms, the basement into a cafeteria, the living space became a study hall, and a

At a time when Reno reigned as Nevada's largest city with just a single Catholic elementary school, Bishop Thomas K. Gorman astutely recognized the urgent and vital need for a Catholic high school. Given the state of the diocese, it was a bold

CELEBRATING 75 YEARS the wisdom to use their God-given talents according to His plan. The "School on the Hill'' era began, marked by Bishop Manogue's growth and increasing importance in the community. It established itself as a respected and vital entity within its family of students, teachers, diocesan partners, and beyond. In the 47-year tenure on the hill, Bishop Manogue not only achieved academic and athletic success but also cultivated deep-rooted traditions, friendships, and relationships, solidifying its position as a cornerstone in the Northern Nevada community.

advancing, the "School on the Hill" required seemingly constant attention and repair. A growing student body strained classroom space, and meeting technology needs became increasingly challenging. It was time to envision a brighter future, one that involved discussions about constructing a new school where students could genuinely thrive. A New Era of Excellence (2004-present)

In 1992, the school transitioned to a principal/president model to meet its growing needs. By the mid-'90s, the administration shifted from primarily clergy to include a majority of dedicated lay individuals from various backgrounds. With the school's demands continuously

Bishop Manogue's growth called for tremendous support and the overcoming of initial fundraising challenges. Bishop Phillip Straling and a generous group of community leaders spearheaded a capital campaign to build the present stateof-the-art campus, which spans nearly 50 acres. Today, this campus has propelled Bishop Manogue to impressive heights, enabling the organization to offer more academic, spiritual,

In 1992, the school switched from a principal-only model to a Principal/President Model, allowing the Principal to oversee all academic affairs and the President to run the school’s financial operations. Since 1948, there have been 16 principals and 12 presidents of Bishop Manogue.

Bishop Manogue held its first Kairos Retreat in 2001. Students from Bishop Gorman led the retreat and thus marked the inception of one of Bishop Manogue’s most treasured traditions. Since then, there have been 70 (and counting) Kairos retreats led and attended by Bishop Manogue students, faculty, and alums.

History has a way of repeating itself, proving true as the school is experiencing its largest-ever enrollment. The demand for a Bishop Manogue education is soaring, inspiring our community to answer the call once again. The next 75 years promise expansion, innovation, and even more remarkable achievements. Collaboratively, Bishop Manogue's Board of Directors and school leaders are crafting a strategic plan that reflects a commitment

FINANCIALS Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is proud to share the 2022-2023 financial statements.

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School is proud to share the 2022-2023 financial statements. The two pie charts below provide a graphical representation of the school’s income and expenditures by category. The 2022-2023 school year brought historic student enrollment; starting the school year with 720 students—an increase of more than 50 students over the previous year. For the first time in school history, there was a waitlist to attend Bishop Manogue—a testament to the academic level and excellence Bishop Manogue offers.

With the increase in student population, Bishop Manogue added additional teaching positions, counselors, academic administrators and support staff. Additionally, work began on security upgrades and improvements with the most notable upgrade at the main entrance gate. In August of 2022, teachers, students, and staff overcame the obstacle of an unforeseen flood that affected the academic wing. However, due to the amazing flexibility and “let’s power through this” attitude, the school was back up and running within

eight weeks and it was back to work as usual. Many thanks to the families and teachers who were patient during the restoration process. In the Fall of 2022, Bishop Manogue took on a large capital project of upgrading a number of the athletic facilities, which included converting three athletic fields from grass to turf and upgrading the existing football field turf. These upgrades not only improve the quality and longevity of the fields as well as the safety of Miner athletes but also provide major long-term cost savings in water and maintenance. A loan for $4 million was taken out to cover the costs of the upgrades.

Donation and fundraising income increased, nearly doubling from the year prior thanks to the large estate gifts and hard work of the Bishop Manogue Development Office. Donations help to provide funding for programs and services that continue to improve the quality of Bishop Manogue. Lastly, Bishop Manogue is blessed to have once again been able to offer financial assistance or discounts to 3 in 5 students who attend Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, totaling more than $1.5 million. It is a top priority set by administrators that Bishop Manogue provides students and families with access to a faith-based, college-preparatory education.

ELIJAH TAYLOR ‘15 & ARNOLD STEINLAGE ‘04 Elijah and Arnold just graduated from the Army Flight Surgeon Course.
