OUR MISSION STATEMENT Faithful to Catholic Tradition and to our Dominican heritage of scholarship and service, Bishop Lynch High School promotes the development of the total person by bringing together a diverse community in a rigorous college preparatory environment where students are taught to strive for excellence, seek truth, and work for justice in the world.

OUR STRATEGIC RESPONSE TO COVID-19 Since the COVID-19 pandemic began affecting the United States in 2020, Bishop Lynch High School has consulted local, state and national guidance and relied on advice from medical authorities. A Bishop Lynch High School Reopening Task Force was appointed to review the expert guidance in relation to the particulars of the BL campus and recommend the safest ways for our school community to reconvene on campus.

In consultation with the Diocese of Dallas Catholic Schools Office and Dr. Bob Hendler, their chief medical consultant, Bishop Lynch High School has developed this plan for the reopening of the BL campus for the spring semester.

The development of this plan was not taken lightly. The health and safety of the entire Bishop Lynch community – students, faculty, staff, and their families – is of utmost importance. However, we also recognize the vast importance of personal connection and socialization to our students’ mental health.

It is with these endeavors and our mission in mind that Bishop Lynch High School plans to implement the following phased approach to the reopening of school:

PHASE 1

eLEARNING GUIDELINES & EXPECTATIONS STUDENTS Based on current research regarding remote instruction it is important that students receive a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning. Some learning will be synchronous (real time learning). Students will need to be present, visible, on-time, and using proper etiquette. Some learning will be asynchronous where the student will work independently at their own pace on teacher designated assessments.

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period.

Students should take responsibility for advocating for themselves.

Communicate with your teacher regularly, especially when a technical problem or concern arises. Ask your teacher to clarify assignments or provide additional tutoring opportunities when necessary. Emails sent to a teacher after 4:00 p.m. should expect a response the next school day.

Check Blackboard daily.

Turn in schoolwork on time and as directed by the teacher.

Complete technology orientation training prior to beginning eLearning.

PARENTS Notify the attendance office if your student is unable to attend remote learning for the day.

Facilitate academic support and encouragement as a learning partner to motivate and guide your student throughout the school year in your role as a learning coach.

Help your student own their learning. Provide support and encouragement and expect your student to take ownership of their success.

Ensure your child is on track with assignments and coursework by monitoring FriarNet and Blackboard. Check your email for teacher and school-wide communication.

Ensure your student is present, visible, and using proper etiquette during synchronous lessons (real time learning).

Ensure your student is working independently at their own pace on teacher designated assessments during asynchronous lessons.

Encourage your student to communicate with their teacher.

Assist in supporting your child’s needs by establishing and managing the daily schedule communicated by the teacher.

Consider creating a designated learning space for your child at home to learn comfortably.

Encourage your student to attend office hours.

Review any parent-oriented technology training materials published by Bishop Lynch.

PHASE 1

ZOOM REQUIREMENTS Whether Bishop Lynch High School students are learning on campus or virtually from their homes, we expect our Friars to uphold the school’s professional educational environment. Due to uncertain times, any student may find themselves participating in virtual learning. We want to make sure everyone is aware of our Zoom requirements.

REMOTE LEARNING ETIQUETTE REMOTE LEARNERS MUST ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING VIRTUAL LEARNING ETIQUETTE: Be on time for class.

Be visible with your Zoom camera on the entire class period to be counted as present. If students are not visible via Zoom, then the teacher will mark the student as absent and remove them from that class.

Wear appropriate attire. BL spirit wear is encouraged but not mandatory.

Be seated at a table (not in bed, on the couch or poolside).

Be in a quiet room (no TV or music on).

Like our on-campus policy, make sure there are no offensive/inappropriate images or political signs in the background view.

Do not share the Zoom link with anyone outside of your class.

PHASE 1

ROLE OF FACULTY SCHEDULE:

Follow the Special eLearning Schedule as noted on page 4.

OFFICE HOURS:

Office hours are from 1:15 – 4:00 PM each eLearning school day, providing individualized enhanced instruction.

A video conference link for students to attend tutoring sessions should be communicated regularly and posted in Blackboard.

Teachers shall dedicate office hour time to providing feedback on assessments, lesson and levels planning, communicating with students and families by answering emails, or conducting recorded one-on-one or group tutoring sessions.

COMMUNICATION:

Maintain regular communication with families (email and phone calls).

If a teacher receives an email after 4:00 p.m., a response is not warranted until the next school day.

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance will be taken daily at the beginning of each class period.

DUE DATES AND HOMEWORK:

Homework and due dates of assignments will remain consistent with the same procedures set up during on-campus instruction for each class. For example, if your policy on campus is “homework is due at the start of the next class period” then continue with the same policy during eLearning.

Consistently use the Blackboard calendar, FriarNet, and syllabus to communicate due dates.

DELIVERY OF CONTENT:

Teachers are required to conduct real-time (synchronous) lessons each class period.

The real-time lesson can occur through a video conferencing platform during designated class time.

The remainder of the time can be dedicated to asynchronous learning or assessment activities.

PHASE 1 When creating asynchronous learning activities, provide an estimated duration for all learning activities (ex. “Watching this video and taking notes should take 25 mins.”). This ensures that if a student takes 2 hours on a 20-minute assignment, they know to reach out for help and the teacher knows to adjust future assignments.

BLACKBOARD ORGANIZATION:

Blackboard is the universal platform for communicating and storing course content.

An eLearning folder on the main resource tab list or in the course content folder is an expectation for keeping all eLearning content organized.

By the start of class, teachers shall post the daily lesson plan or checklist for that day and specific class. The lesson plan or checklist shall include: a video conferencing link, daily learning targets, agendas, activities, and assessments.

Department chairs will continue checking lesson plans in Blackboard and provide feedback when necessary.

BLACKBOARD CALENDAR AND SYLLABUS:

Update or modify the class syllabus and Blackboard calendar weekly so students continue to have a clear and transparent overview of your class expectations and due dates.

Post a two-week eLearning syllabus (if it varies from your original or in-person syllabus) and put due dates on the Blackboard calendar.

PHASE 2 Dependent Upon Conditions Families will have the option as to which learning model they feel is the best for their student. Families that commit to the remote synchronous option (at home) must provide two school days' notice if the student wants to return to on-campus learning. Families that commit to in-person instruction may change their commitment to remote synchronous learning at any point until the end of that current 9-week grading period, or if two school days' notice is provided for return.

OPTION 1:

ON CAMPUS LEARNING MODEL In this model, students physically attend school on campus when allowed to do so by the Catholic Schools Office.

Student expectations for on campus learning: Teachers will take attendance daily at the beginning of the designated schedule by course and absences will be documented Students will commit to physically attending all classes as outlined in their schedule and actively participate in learning activities Grading and GPA policies will be in effect All students are expected to adhere to the Student Handbook

Onsite health and safety protocols: Increased cleaning and sanitation practices, as well as frequent reminders of hand hygiene and social distancing will be in place There will be no sharing of school supplies, food, masks, water bottles, or learning materials All students must wear a face covering while on school transportation, in classrooms, in hallways during passing periods, and anywhere inside the building Sage Dinning will continue to provide food service with heightened health and safety protocols

PHASE 2 OPTION 2:

AT HOME INSTRUCTION MODEL In this model, students attend classes remotely as outlined on their A and B-Day schedule (synchronous).

Student expectations for remote learning: Synchronous learning will occur; live interactive classes with students and teachers participating in real-time Teachers will take attendance daily on a designated schedule by course and absences will be documented Students will commit to attending remotely class (both A and B-Day) at a designated schedule and actively participate in learning activities as if they were attending class in-person Student are required to adhere to the Student Handbook just as they would during in-person attendance In-person grading, and GPA policies will be in effect Please see pg. 6 for Zoom requirements

Athletics: Students who elect remote learning may participate in athletics.

Students may not leave class period early to travel to sports practice and/or events.

Students must attend at least a half day either virtually or in person (two periods not including athletics) to compete in that day's athletic event.

All students who participate in athletics will be required to meet TAPPS requirements, be enrolled and attend the athletic class and after school practices in person. Remote students will need to furnish their own transportation to and from athletic class and after school practices.

Visual and Performing Arts: Students who elect remote learning may participate in visual and performing arts.

Students may not leave class period early to travel to sports practice and/or events.

Virtual learning for visual and performing arts courses may be synchronous. Students who attend blended synchronous learning may participate in extracurricular activities (before and/or after school rehearsals, practices, performances, and competitions) if they meet all TAPPS requirements, are enrolled in the applicable course section, and are able to attend designated rehearsals, practices, performances, and competitions. Remote students must have their own transportation to and from practices, rehearsals, and performances.

OUR DIGITAL STRATEGY

DIGITAL PLATFORMS BLACKBOARD LEARN Blackboard will continue to be our school’s learning management system, an extension of the four walls of our classroom. Students can access class assignments, assessments, videos, announcements, calendars, and more.

FRIAR NET FriarNet allows students and parents access to class schedule and grades.

ZOOM Zoom is a video conferencing platform that will be used to provide LIVE virtual classes and Blended Synchronous Learning.

GoToMEETING GoToMeeting is a video conferencing platform that will be used to provide LIVE large-group meetings and activities or school events.

MICROSOFT 365 Microsoft365 is our student, faculty, and staff portal, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook, plus additional classroom tools.

PHYSICAL CAMPUS HEALTH & SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

FACILITY UPGRADES Bishop Lynch High School has made significant investments to provide a safer and healthier oncampus environment, including the following facility improvements: New air conditioning systems were installed that feature upgraded filtering systems and increased filtration of contaminates. UVC lights in use in each HVAC unit to disinfect and eliminate germs and contaminates.

Outside air intake systems have been updated to increase the amount of outside (fresh) air being dispersed inside the building.

Seventy-five touchless sanitizing stations have been installed. These gel dispensers are in each academic classroom on the inside wall of the doorway.

Four electrostatic sanitizers are available.

Ozone machines will be used after hours and on weekends.

Drinking fountain stations will be autofill only. The hand bars have been removed since these might result in continuous contact. Students are encouraged to bring filled water bottles from home.

Installed motion detection points for doors leading to the courtyard.

Disposable masks will be made available to essential visitors at common entry points.

All tables fitted with plexiglass barriers, and additional outdoor seating purchased.

SANITATION PROTOCOLS Bishop Lynch High School strives to meet and exceed all CDC recommended daily sanitation protocols and procedures. We are also increasing the frequency of sanitation protocols to combat COVID-19, which may include the following procedures: Restrooms will be professionally cleaned three times each day with surfaces and touch locations receiving primary focus.

Teachers will sanitize classroom surfaces between each class. Teachers will be supplied with a spray-on disinfectant that has a one-minute dwell time. No wiping or contact is required. Teachers will also be responsible for cleaning their personal areas such as their computer monitor and keyboard.

Daily cleaning of each room by maintenance staff to include dusting, wiping down and disinfecting touch points (doorknobs, desktops, light switches, etc.), wiping down flat surfaces like commonly used shelves, cleaning floors, and removing trash and debris.

Nightly disinfecting of hallways and walk areas, including locker areas. Disinfectant fogging of hallways to occur either before school, immediately after school or overnight.

The Bistro and the Atrium will be sanitized immediately after the breakfast service and again after the afternoon lunch service.

The school clinic will be cleaned after the report of an incident/exposure. There will be an isolation area installed within the clinic.

BL maintenance staff have been equipped with electrostatic disinfectant sprayers to increase the efficiency of building sanitation and outbreak control.

A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

DAILY ROUTINE We are living a new normal because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, our daily school routine will be different. These changes will include important daily health self-screenings before students, faculty and staff even come to campus.

PRIOR TO ARRIVAL ON CAMPUS COMPLETE DAILY SCREENING Parents are required to take their student’s temperature and complete a daily COVID-19 screening each morning before school. If you can answer “no” to all screening questions and temperature is below 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit, the student may attend on-campus learning. If you answer “yes” to any question, the student must remain at home.

REMEMBER YOUR MASK Masks must be worn at all times (except while eating) on campus.

Students will provide their own mask that properly covers the mouth and nose. Masks with ventilation valves are not permitted. Face coverings must be in place upon exiting a vehicle on campus.

No masks with ventilation valves, no bandannas, and all cloth face coverings must be a cotton blend, no 100% polyester.

BRING A WATER BOTTLE Drinking fountain stations will be autofill only. Consider using a water bottle with a built-in straw so drinks can be taken from underneath a mask. Masks may not be removed during class.

DURING THE SCHOOL DAY

SOCIAL DISTANCING Students must be diligent about social distancing (six feet apart) whenever possible while on campus.

HAND SANITIZATION Upon entering/exiting each class, use the touchless hand sanitizer inside each classroom.

HYGIENE ETIQUETTE Practice good hand hygiene throughout the day.

SHARING SUPPLIES Do not share school supplies, snacks or other items.

FOOD SERVICE SAGE Dining will provide grab-and-go breakfast and lunch. In order to maintain appropriate social distancing while eating, both expanded indoor and outdoor seating will be available.

AFTER SCHOOL PROCEDURE At the end of your time on campus, please go straight to your vehicle and avoid congregation.

OUR MISSION Bishop Lynch High School’s mission is to develop the whole person, and we know these months of sheltering-inplace and social isolation have taken a toll on many young people. Besides plans to resume on-campus academics, Bishop Lynch has worked tirelessly to prepare for the resumption of extracurricular, spiritual and social opportunities in as safe a manner as possible.

SPIRITUAL Bishop Lynch High School has a campus chaplain and a director of campus ministry to guide our Friar family's spiritual growth.

Until it is safe to gather in large groups, Masses will be offered in a modified format. Additional in-person and virtual opportunities to grow spiritually will be regularly available.

MENTAL HEALTH Bishop Lynch High School has a full suite of guidance counselors at the ready. The BL guidance department is perfectly poised to address a multitude of teen issues, including anxiety, depression and stress. We are confident our Friars are in capable, caring hands. Even when our students are in remote instruction mode, the BL guidance counselors are available for consultation via Zoom, phone call and email.

HOUSE SYSTEM Each student has a house dean and mentor to add to their trusted adult list. This support system is especially helpful during these trying times.

Mentor group time has been built into the schedule twice each week to facilitate mentorship, pastoral care and leadership development.

ATHLETICS Bishop Lynch High School will continue to work with the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) to determine the best course of action for our Friar family. Rest assured that Bishop Lynch will incorporate every guideline and recommendation to keep our student-athletes as safe as possible.

CLUBS/ORGANIZATIONS Students can preview all the possibilities to get involved in a club or organization (or two or three!) that they are passionate about. Clubs and Organizations meet at least once a week on Wednesdays.

NOTIFICATION OF POSITIVE CASES

PARENT AND SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP Bishop Lynch High School can mitigate but cannot eliminate the risk of contracting COVID-19.

Undoubtedly our school community will continue to experience cases of COVID-19. It is essential that we be in partnership with each other as we navigate these uncertain and unusual times.

To help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and to help us promote the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, we expect the following:

PARENTS & STUDENT GUARDIANS ARE EXPECTED TO: Ensure that your student is screened daily (in the morning prior to coming to campus) for COVID-19 symptoms, including temperature checks.

Notify Bishop Lynch High School if your student is exhibiting any symptoms on the COVID-19 Student Screening Form and do not send him/her to school. Email attendance@bishoplynch.org, or contact our Campus Nurse Patty Barton at patty.barton@bishoplynch.org or call 214-324-3607 ext. 4141.

Notify Bishop Lynch High School if your student or any immediate family member living in the same household tests positive for COVID-19.

Notify Bishop Lynch High School if your student has direct or close contact with anyone who has tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 14 days. Close contact is defined as being within six feet for a cumulative duration of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period without a mask.

Work with our Campus Nurse and Certified Contact Tracer Patty Barton RN, as well as the local health department by providing a list of close contacts with contact information to ensure timely and efficient contact tracing which is necessary to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Notify your student's guidance counselor if there are concerns related to their mental or emotional well-being so that appropriate resources and support can be provided.

Display responsible off-campus behaviors that include not hosting parties, limiting social gatherings, being mindful of the health needs of the entire community, and using a common sense approach to keep yourself and those around you at minimal risk of exposure.

PARENTS CAN EXPECT BISHOP LYNCH TO: Notify parents, student guardians and employees of Bishop Lynch High School when a student or employee has tested positive for COVID-19.

Where it is known that there has been direct contact, parents, student guardians and employees will be individually notified.

Maintain the privacy of impacted individuals, keeping the names of those who are confirmed positive for COVID-19 confidential, only to be shared with the local health department by our campus nurse as required by law.

Work in collaboration with our campus nurse and the local health department by providing a list of close contacts and contact information to help with timely and efficient contact tracing which is necessary to mitigate the spread of the virus.

Clean and disinfect any areas in the building a COVID+ person may have been.

Continue to support our student-centered Guidance Counseling Department and services that promote your child’s mental health and well-being.

Communicate regularly through Friar Facts and the BLHS website.

INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE CDC

WHEN YOU CAN BE AROUND OTHERS AFTER YOU HAD OR LIKELY HAD COVID-19 If you have, or think you might have COVID-19, it is important to stay home and away from other people. Staying away from others helps stop the spread of COVID-19. If you have an emergency warning sign (including trouble breathing), get emergency medical care immediately.

When you can be around others (end home isolation) depends on different factors for different situations. Find CDC’s recommendations for your situation below.

I THINK OR I KNOW I HAD COVID-19, AND I HAD SYMPTOMS You can be with others after: At least 10 days since symptoms first appeared and At least 24 hours with no fever without fever-reducing medication and Symptoms have improved Depending on your healthcare provider’s advice and availability of testing, you might get tested to see if you still have COVID-19. If you are tested, you can be around others when you have no fever, respiratory symptoms have improved, and you receive two negative test results in a row, at least 24 hours apart.

I TESTED POSITIVE FOR COVID-19 BUT HAD NO SYMPTOMS If you continue to have no symptoms, you can be with others after: 10 days have passed since test was administered Depending on your healthcare provider’s advice and availability of testing, you might get tested to see if you still have COVID-19. If you will be tested, you can be around others after you receive two negative test results in a row, at least 24 hours apart.

If you develop symptoms after testing positive, follow the guidance above for “I think or know I had COVID, and I had symptoms.”

INFORMATION PROVIDED BY THE CDC

I HAVE A WEAKENED IMMUNE SYSTEM (IMMUNOCOMPROMISED) DUE TO A HEALTH CONDITION OR MEDICATION. WHEN CAN I BE AROUND OTHERS?

People with conditions that weaken their immune system might need to stay home longer than 10 days. Talk to your healthcare provider for more information. If testing is available in your community, it may be recommended by your healthcare provider. You can be with others after you receive two negative test results in a row, at least 24 hours apart.

If testing is not available in your area, your doctor should work with an infectious disease expert at your local health department to determine if you are likely to spread COVID-19 to others and need to stay home longer.

FOR ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN AROUND A PERSON WITH COVID-19 It is important to remember that anyone who has close contact with someone with COVID-19 should stay home for 14 days after exposure based on the time it takes to develop illness.

Any family member, student or employee who is in a quarantine state as outlined by the CDC is not permitted on campus or to participate in or attend in-person extracurricular activities.

QUARANTINE IF YOU MIGHT BE SICK! Quarantine is used to keep someone who might have been exposed to COVID-19 away from others. Quarantine helps prevent spread of disease that can occur before a person knows they are sick or if they are infected with the virus without feeling symptoms. People in quarantine should stay home, separate themselves from others, monitor their health, and follow directions from their state or local health department.

On Dec. 10, 2020, the CDC stated that local public health authorities should make final decisions for the length of quarantine for persons exposed to COVID-19, based on local conditions and COVID-19 case counts. The Dallas County Health Department continues to require a 14-day quarantine for students who attend school in Dallas County who have been exposed to COVID-19. Bishop Lynch High School follows all guidance set forth by the Dallas County Health Department in regards to COVID-19.
