1,030 The number of students entrusted to our care for the 2016-2017 school year.

Dear Friar Family, In this Reflections magazine, we hope to provide an opportunity to look back on the conclusion of another successful year at Bishop Lynch High School in 2015-2016, showcase the first half of our fall 2016 semester and to highlight the results of our ever growing impact on the young lives entrusted to our community. There are numerous stories to share and connections to celebrate. Take a look to the right for a snapshot of just some of the amazing things happening in the Bishop Lynch High School community by the numbers. While we are proud to share these recognitions and milestones, our purpose is driven by our focus on that first number – 1,030 – the number of young men and women who, entrusted to our care, are working to hear and answer God’s call in their lives. They are shaped by your influence and impact as an alumni, parent, grandparent or friend to live a life of purpose and mission molded in the Dominican heritage of scholarship and service. Thank you for your generous support of and witness to this mission. Together, we provide a united network, forming Friars to become the best versions of themselves and future leaders in their communities. We look forward to your next visit to our revitalized campus and cherish the stories that you share about your personal, professional and spiritual journeys after walking the halls at Bishop Lynch High School. Our commitment to striving for excellence, seeking truth and working for justice is rooted in your continued support and prayers.

Peace and Blessings, Christopher Rebuck

AUCTION Saturday, March 19, 2016 was a night of firsts. The first Bishop Lynch Scholarship Auction to be held in our beautiful, new Championship Gymnasium housed in the Leyden Arts & Athletic Complex. The first auction with President Chris Rebuck. And, the first with over 400 guests in attendance! Bringing the BL Auction "back" – what an incredible and special evening was had by all. The gym was transformed into the BL Barn, complete with a canopy of twinkling lights and antler chandeliers. Guests feasted on delicious BBQ from Pecan Lodge and boot-scooted to the country sounds of the Nolan Pick Band. But, most importantly,

14

R E F L E C T I O N S | FA L L 2 0 1 6

we raised money to provide scholarships to deserving students. A highlight of the evening was our special guest speaker, distinguished Bishop Lynch alumnus Kevin Bailey ’00. Kevin was a scholarship recipient while attending Bishop Lynch. He went on to graduate from Rice University and The University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Among other accomplishments, Kevin has served at the White House as the Special Assistant to the Chief of Staff – Office of the Vice-President, Senior Policy Advisor at the US Department of Treasury, and is currently the Director of Business Development and Partnership at

CommonBond in New York City. Kudos to our outstanding 2015 Lone Star Auction Chairs, Liesl Kuby and Susan Lacina. The evening’s success would not have been possible without their passionate leadership and the hard work and dedication of the entire Auction Committee! On behalf of all Bishop Lynch students – both present and future – THANK YOU all for your support and generosity! - Beth Arsenault Community Gifts Officer

Bishop Lynch alumnus and current parent Steve Ramos '85 said it best in a lovely thank-you letter sent to the Chairs:

I want to reach out and thank you both for the wonderful event on Saturday night. You turned passion into action, love into an event and commitment into opportunity. There are future students who will derive a direct financial benefit from the funds raised that evening. The point should not be lost that without those funds those students would not be able to attend BL and have the opportunity to glean all of the benefits of a BL education. Those students will one day follow in the footsteps of other BL alums and serve on the Texas Supreme Court, win a Grammy, run a major airline or advise a President. In addition, those students will also create a new legacy that will be limitless and without a ceiling. All of this will be the direct result of those drapes, lights and BBQ from one random night in March 2016. Please know, and fully understand, that you have changed students’ lives forever, and have set in motion the beginnings of great things to come, not only for those students, but for our nation. Thank You!

Monica Rochester attended St. Pius X and graduated from Bishop Lynch in 1983. As a student at BL, she played varsity softball as a senior (where she helped the team win a district title), and was also a member of the Lady Friar basketball state championship team in 1983. Monica graduated from Southern Methodist University with a bachelor of arts degree in Communications and attended Merchant Marine Industry Training with Alabama Shipyard and Atlantic Marine. Since joining the United States Coast Guard, Captain Rochester has served in several capacities. Most notably, she was selected as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Enhanced Conventional Weapons expert, where she coordinated with the White House National Security Staff and developed the Biological Assessment and Threat Response protocol that ensures better communication between agencies in the event of a threat. Captain Rochester also pioneered a National Strike Force deployment aimed at engaging with Iceland’s Coast Guard to introduce international coordination and consequence management strategies for oil spill incidents. She has been involved in a wide-range of response operations around the world, from deploying to Bahrain in the Persian Gulf to re-affirm the Coast Guard’s partnership with the U.S. Navy in the event of an environmental incident in the Middle East, to coordinating recovery and consequence management operations for the uncontrolled re-entry of a satellite carrying hazardous cargo. In all, Monica has served in multiple roles and assignments, with more than 20 years of experience in environmental response and protection operations. She was recently promoted to the rank of Captain and assumed her duties as the Deputy Sector Commander for U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles – Long Beach. Jeff Brown, from the Class of 1988, is a fifth-generation native Dallasite and an alumnus of Good Shepherd School in Garland. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America throughout his Good Shepherd and Bishop Lynch years, earning the rank of Eagle Scout, an achievement reached by only four percent of Boy Scouts nationwide. Judge Brown holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston Law Center. After law school, he served as a law clerk on the Supreme Court of Texas for Justices Jack Hightower and Greg Abbott. Judge Brown practiced law in Houston with the international law firm Baker Botts, trying cases to juries across Southeast Texas. He is boardcertified in civil trial law and is the co-editor of a legal treatise on the Texas Rules of Evidence. After leaving private practice, he served as a judge on the 55th District Court in Harris County and then on the Texas Fourteenth Court of Appeals in Houston. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of Texas in 2013. Along the way, Judge Brown has received many honors. He has been named Judge of the Year three times, was named the Outstanding Young Lawyer in Texas by the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and one of Five Outstanding Young Texans by the Jaycees. Additionally, he was recently named the Alumnus of the Year by the University of Houston Law Center. Today, he is an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America and has received the Outstanding Eagle Scout Award from the National Eagle Scout Association. He serves on the boards of the Texas Historical Foundation and Texas Supreme Court Historical Society and is a Life Member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Jeff and his wife Susannah live in the Austin area. They have three children, two of whom attend the University of Texas at Austin and their youngest son is a sophomore in high school.   Nick Martin, from the Class of 2001, credits the development of his musical talent to his experiences at Bishop Lynch as a member of the band, as the accompanist for the Bishop Lynch choir, and with the Blackfriars Guild. He is a graduate of the University of Southern California film school and earned an MBA in Marketing from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. He is employed as a Product Manager for Smith & Nephew, but that is his day job. Nick is also a composer and musician. He has written musicals that have been performed at Dallas Children’s Theater including “Skippyjon Jones,” “Teen Brain: The Musical” and “Tacky Box: The Adventures of Max and Margo.” He is currently working on a new musical, “Once Upon a Rhyme,” about the adventures of Mother Goose. But perhaps his most well-known composition around Bishop Lynch High School is the “St. Blaze Alumni Musical,” which Nick wrote and produced with fellow alumni John Farrell '00 and Lauren Reeves Wallace '00. Nick, John, and Lauren all participated in the 2013 Blackfriars Alumni Revue, in which any alumni who had been a Blackfriars member while in high school was welcome to take part in an Alumni show. The preparation for the Alumni Revue involved a few months of rehearsal, a lot of practice singing, dance steps for people that hadn’t danced in a long time, and many hours renewing old friendships and creating new ones. St. Blaze was based on that experience. The show was very well-received when it debuted in May of 2015. Nick and his wife Joy were married earlier this year and live in Plano.

with each other. For example, history and science can fit together seamlessly. If you’re teaching an historical time period, you can focus on scientific discoveries and technological advances during that time,” Rebuck continued. “It’s amazing to see the gaps that can be bridged when you empower young minds with the ability to make choices.”

At Bishop Lynch, educators are the new pioneers of education who know that “mixing things up” can help tap further into the students’ learning potential.

Along with the advanced curriculum is the integration of Catholic values through handson learning, technology and collaboration. “As advisors, we have the unique mission to be able to serve students in a ‘home away from home’ and our parents are comforted knowing their children are being supported in all areas of development in a faith-filled environment, fostering growth and building character. Now it’s our job to continue to think ahead and guide this growth into the next 50 years,” continued the president.

Under the passionate care and direction of President Chris Rebuck, the rebuilding of the school’s campus was designed to ignite the imagination, inspire self-confidence, and instill a lifelong love of learning in all students. “We worked to create an immersive and stimulating learning environment, based off of MIT’s ‘Technology Enabled Active Learning’ (TEAL) classroom design where layout plays a role in how students learn, concentrate and behave. Traditional lectures, although excellent for many purposes, do not always convey concepts well because of their passive nature. By allowing for mobile furniture, whiteboard walls and smartboard technology switches up the environments in which the students learn, it not only keeps their minds engaged, but it also allows them to learn in a way that is best for them as individuals. Our teachers know that technology provides development in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communication, innovation and creativity.” Each student’s workspace provides an opportunity for them to break down the curriculum and then build it back up their way, while making teachers and coaches their collaborators. “This also allows us to do more cross-curricular work, so that instead of learning in isolation of each other, the subjects work

CHOIR INVITATION In September 2015, (the now) Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, former bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, celebrated the first all-school Mass of the year. Before concluding the worship, he made a thrilling announcement to the entire community: The Bishop Lynch A Cappella Choir has accepted a special invitation from the Vatican to sing with the Sistine Chapel Choir for the Epiphany Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, on January 6, 2017. And with that announcement, the gymnasium erupted in applause. Celebrating the Feast Day of St. Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church, Bishop Farrell told the community that St. Gregory was the one who promoted Gregorian chant and religious music in the Church. “St. Gregory,” Bishop Farrell said, “is the patron saint of chanting and singing of choirs and musicians. Today, we don’t have St. Gregory, but we do have Mrs. Kathy Leos and she is also, ‘THE GREAT.’” Earlier in the day, Bishop Lynch President Chris Rebuck used the school’s newly instituted “Thankful Thursdays” to call attention to Leos’ dedication to Catholic education. “Thank you to our choir director, Kathy Leos! Her passion and service to Bishop Lynch for over 30 years has impacted countless lives touched by her music and her witness.”

Leos, who has been the choral director at Bishop Lynch High School since 1983, received the esteemed invitation from the Vatican in July 2015, and brought the possibility to the school’s Leadership Team. “Mrs. Leos told me of the invitation with some hesitation, wondering if it was even feasible,” said Bishop Lynch Principal Evelyn Grubbs. “My immediate response, after the goose bumps of excitement, was that we have to make this happen! We could never turn down an honor with such significance as this one; the school is committed to doing whatever is necessary to support the choir in their journey. This invitation speaks to the stellar reputation of Mrs. Leos and the brilliant program she has developed,” Grubbs said. “We are all so excited!” The Bishop Lynch A Cappella Choir has been part of the Bishop Lynch “tradition of excellence” since the school’s founding in 1963. The A Cappella Choir is one of seven choral music ensembles at the school. The choir, numbering 75 students, has participated in a variety of musical experiences throughout the United States, including concerts, music festivals, contests and liturgies, where they consistently earn top honors. Previous international invitations have provided the Bishop Lynch Choir with opportunities to sing in cathedrals, at schools, and in cultural exchanges in Mexico, Ireland and Québec, along with taking

performance-pilgrimages to France in 2015, and twice to Rome - for Holy Week in 2005, and for the 500th anniversary of the Vatican’s Palestrina Choir in 2013. However, nothing compares to this invitation. “The Vatican’s invitation to the choir to sing Epiphany Mass in January 2017, is an unique honor that will illuminate and strengthen our faith journey as individuals, as a choir, and as part of the Bishop Lynch community,” said Leos. Bishop Farrell concluded Mass this morning saying that he considers this recognition of the choir to be one of the greatest honors bestowed upon Bishop Lynch High School, and President Rebuck agrees.

“The Bishop Lynch choir has provided students a wonderful opportunity to study and perform music that inspires and lifts up the soul,” Rebuck said. “The invitation to sing for Pope Francis is a testament not only to Kathy, but also the mission of spiritual growth that Bishop Lynch hopes to inspire through all aspects of the student experience. I am thrilled for our students to be able to undertake such an impactful, spiritual pilgrimage as they lift their voices in prayer and praise in Rome!”

T H E WAY Trophy cases? Banners? Yeah, these are a couple of good ways to show off the success and history of an athletic program. But why be good, when you can be ELITE. Take a stroll down “The Way” at Bishop Lynch High School and you’ll see the new example for showcasing athletic achievement, a project that added the finishing touches in the fall of 2015. The project — lasting 20 months from research and development to final installation — was completed in three phases and now stands as a shining display of 50-plus years of athletic excellence. "Research and development for The Way began in January 2014, with conceptual artwork coming a few months later that May," explained Director of Communications Kristin Mannari ’99. Phase 1 — which includes the Sports Honor Roll display as well as the Friar and Fight Song in the Competition Gym — was finished in October 2014 to coincide with Homecoming during BL’s 50th Anniversary campaign. Phase 2 was revealed in January 2015, and included the two-story trophy display and fulllength action murals on the South Wall. Included in the murals are former BL student-athletes Stephen Howard ’88, Matt Weibring ’98, Ryan Moats ’02, Maryann Baker ’07 and others. Finally, Phase 3 — the sports boards on the North Wall — were finished and installed in August to put a very impressive finishing touch on the

project, which has drawn praise from past, present and future Friars. “I really can’t put into words the feeling of being honored by Bishop Lynch this way,” Howard said. “It was even more special for me as my parents were with me when I saw the wall for the first time. This is without a doubt the most special recognition that I have ever received, and I am humbled every time I see it.” “I think the whole concept is very unique and a great idea,” Weibring said. “It lets students who are in school now and in the future, get a sense of Bishop Lynch's rich athletic tradition. It also allows young athletes to see some people who were in the exact same shoes they are in now and that they were able to have success after BL. Hopefully it gives the kids hope that they can dream big and those dreams are attainable.” Howard also noted how impressed he was with the design, as a number of others were. “It is awe-inspiring. The architecture and design really brings the warmth and community into the building. Students, faculty and alumni will enjoy this facility for years to come,” Howard said. “I think this addition really illustrates the blending of two worlds. It’s a perfect blend of past and future while setting the tone of what Bishop Lynch is all about — which is excellence — while also giving back to the community.” BY CLIFF GIBSON B I S H O P LY N C H H I G H S C H O O L S P O RT S I N F O R M AT I O N D I R E C TO R

JUSTIN WREN '05 Justin Wren ’05 fought his way to fame as a mixed martial artist, making a name for himself as an Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight. He now devotes his passion and compassion to giving some of the world’s most persecuted people a fighting chance. Wren, 28, shared the twists of his journey from competitive sports, through depression and drug abuse, to a pivotal calling from God that led to a rainforest in the heart of Africa when he spoke to a near-capacity crowd at Bishop Lynch’s McGonigle Theatre during the Leyden Lecture Series on Jan. 13. His soft but penetrating voice and video presentation captivated the students, who learned that Wren suffered as the target of extreme bullying during his school days near Crowley, Texas, before he spent his junior and senior years at Bishop Lynch. “I tell my parents that sending me to Bishop Lynch was one of the best, if not the best, decisions they ever made for me,” said Wren, who lives in Arlington with his wife, Emily. “I loved my time at Bishop Lynch. “Bishop Lynch saved my life, changed my life.” Wren, an All-American and national wrestling champion at Bishop Lynch, said that he found a welcome mat at the school, and not just in the wrestling room. But he said that he had begun dealing with depression at 13— the age at which he set his heart on an MMA career.

He started fighting professionally at 19, after training at the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University, suffering a broken elbow during a match, and attending Iowa State for a year. Wren, who is 6-3 and 248 pounds, said that the pain medication he received for the injury helped to dull his depression. “At 23, I was a depressed, drunk drug addict,” he told the assembly. “I was a hurt dude who hurt people.” The message of several Christian missionaries resonated with Wren, who said that faith helped him combat his addictions. “I was 11 months sober and 11 months into being a Christian, and I looked at those pastors and missionaries as real Christians,” said Wren, who left MMA for more than four years before resuming pro sports last August. “I looked up to them the way that maybe the fans of fighting had looked at me.” Kenny Monday, the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games freestyle wrestling champion at 163 pounds and one of Wren’s coaches at Bishop Lynch, said that his pupil was a great team member whose missionary endeavors have made all who knew him proud. “He was always a gentle giant until he got on that mat,” said Monday, the wrestling coach at Team Takedown in Arlington, where Wren now trains. “He didn’t use his size to intimidate people. He’s got a great heart, and I always saw that.

“He had those difficulties and addictions in his life. They were why he became the man he’s become.” A vision during a Colorado prayer meeting led to Wren’s first trip to the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2011, he said. Wren said that he envisioned himself in an unfamiliar forest infused with beautiful music and echoes of the word “forgotten.”

KYLE M AY N AR D

He said that he confided in Christian missionary Caleb Bislow, whose experiences allowed him to identify the people in Wren’s vision as the Mbuti Pygmies of the Ituri Rainforest in the Congo. Wren lived with the Pygmies, where he experienced the challenges of their life, particularly the need for clean water. He said that their struggles and their hope converted him from a fighter who fought for himself to one who fights for others. His “Fight for the Forgotten” initiative provides his Pygmy family with water wells, agricultural expertise and access to land. Wren’s ministry has become an official initiative of Water4, an Oklahomabased non-profit that is devoted to allaying the global water crisis. Wren, who has returned to MMA to help call attention to the forgotten people, said that he plans to spend time in the Congo with his Pygmy family two or three times each year. “People are worth fighting for,” he said. “My first 23 or 24 years, I spent so much time in the church instead of going out and being the church.” B Y C AT H Y H A R A S TA T H E T E X A S C AT H O L I C

Aaron Lara ’14 created a blog for the University of North Texas' The Odyssey titled “15 Signs You Went To Bishop Lynch - We can all relate and it's why

we're all so close.” The following is taken from his blog: Bishop Lynch High School in Dallas, Texas -- everyone in Dallas has a friend or a friend of a friend who goes or went there. It's iconic. With a strong sense of tradition, community and a good mixture of modernization and evolution, Bishop Lynch always came out on top. No, it wasn't all sugar plums and fairies, but it wasn't some crazy strict Catholic high school either. There was church, community service and priests and sisters; however, there was gum-chewing in class, free periods and parties like any other high school. I have to admit, it was a great mixture which kept me focused and motivated, but also let my unique and social sides show off. Everyone's experience at Bishop Lynch was different, but we can all relate to these 15 statements." To read the 15 signs, visit The Odyssey online. Congratulations to Barrett Renner ’14 who received the Great American Conference (GAC) Freshman of the Year Award as Southern Arkansas' quarterback. "While a majority of students begin the program quiet and unfamiliar with their research area, at the conclusion of nine short weeks, they are enthusiastically articulating the practical application of advanced scientific concepts and research methods during the research symposium." Yibo received a full scholarship to UTD upon his graduation from BL in May of 2014.
