From The

Office of the President September 2015 Dear Friar Fans, Families and Visitors: Welcome to Roffino Stadium and thank you for purchasing this copy of the 2015-2016 Bishop Lynch Football Media Guide. We look forward to an enjoyable season of spirited competition and are confident that the sportsmanship of the student-athletes will be mirrored by the behavior of fans, students and families. This year marks a year of change at Bishop Lynch, as our longtime president Ed Leyden, stepped down after more than 30 years of faithful and dedicated service to the BL community. We also started the school year with the unveiling of a new academic wing to our campus. The remainder of the transformation to the west side of campus is scheduled to be complete before the start of the next academic year. In the spirit of competition, I’m reminded of a quote from Rev. Theodore M Hesburgh, C.S.C (1917-2015) former president of the University of Notre Dame: “We can never be sure of total victory, not even of eternal salvation, until we’ve won it. And win it we must, day by day, even minute by minute. Don’t ever stop wanting to be number one, but especially don’t ever stop trying.” As president, I am especially proud of the superior athletic programs at Bishop Lynch and especially our coaches and student-athletes who demonstrate the “pursuit of excellence” on a daily basis. Our challenge as fans is to support all of our teams in a spirit of Christ-like competition and fellowship! Enjoy the game and GO FRIARS! Sincerely,

Christopher L. Rebuck, President

Dallas

EAST DALLAS Bishop Lynch High School is located on 22 acres at the corner of Ferguson Road and Peavy Road in the northern part of East Dallas. Nestled in the heart of the Casa View area, Bishop Lynch is surrounded by historic neighborhoods and distinguished landmarks.

White Rock White Rock Lake, the largest body of water within Dallas city limits, is located only four miles from the Bishop Lynch campus. The picturesque park surrounding the lake is home to jogging and bicycle trails, impressive homes and a variety of wildlife. One of the main draws is the White Rock Spillway on Garland Road. Located on the east side of the lake is Flag Pole Hill, a gathering place for the young and the young-at-heart for several generations. Families picnic, school children play and young lovers stroll the expanse of beautiful lawn surrounding the hill. Just north of the lake is the Dallas Arboretum, home of the DeGolyer Estate. The Arboretum provides a tranquil setting for many of the city’s weddings and those families who are looking for a beautiful backdrop for family portraits.

Casa Linda Casa Linda Shopping Center, one of the oldest centers in the city, is alive and well, offering partons shopping, eating and even exerciase opportunities. The homes along Forest Hills, Casa Linda and Claremont are some of the most attractive real estate in the city for families large and small. Quaint neighborhood shops and historic centers, greenways and parks dot the area.

Lakewood The neighborhoods of historic Dallas are located within a five-mile radius of Bishop Lynch. Swiss Avenue, the original home to some of the wealthiest families in the area, is still the location of beautiful turn-of-the-century mansions with manicured lawns and wide shady drives. Historic Lakewood Shopping Center features night life with dining and entertainment venues, including Matt’s Ranchero Martinez (Matt Martinez ’93). The Lakewood Country Club, The Dallas Athletic Club and Tennyson Park provide entertainment and retreat for many Bishop Lynch families. Nestled somewhere between old-Dallas history and modern day convenience, East Dallas is the perfect mixture of luxury and practicality.

Bishop Lynch

In the early ’60s, on the far eastern side of Dallas, a few enterprising parish pastors and parents founded a high school intended to serve a wide diversity of children-budding scholars, talented athletes and brilliant thespians. All who sought truth and knowledge were welcomed. From this early vision has grown a truly outstanding Catholic educational institution. Twice awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence, Bishop Lynch High School is the standard of Catholic School education in Texas. Serving the youth in Dallas and its surrounding communities, Bishop Lynch continues to lead the way in providing a unparalleled experience to a high school student. The Bishop Lynch main school building consists of four main hallways surrounding an inner courtyard, the gymnasium, The Catholic Foundation Performing Arts Center and the newly opened Sister Cecila Sehr Science Pavilion.

Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex

Perhaps the most exciting addition is the Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex which opened in May 2014. The 45,000 square-foot facility includes a 1,500-seat Competition Gymnasium/Convocation Center, second weight room, new Varsity locker rooms and breath-taking classrooms which are completely dedicated to Band, Dance and Visual Arts.

The Monsignor Weinzapfel Atrium

One of the outstanding features of Bishop Lynch is the atrium area located at the front of the school. A popular gathering spot for students, the space is also used for receptions, dinners and even dances. The St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, is located in the center of the campus, provides seating for up to seventy students and is used for the celebration of Mass, prayer services and other religious gatherings and ceremonies.

Theatre

McGonigle Theatre is home to Bishop Lynch’s exceptional performing arts program. With a seating capacity of 380, the theatre is an intimate, stylish space for all types of presentations. With its production quality audio visual equipment and theater style backstage area, the state-of – the-art facility has been heralded as the premier performance venue in East Dallas.

Science Wing

The Sister Cecilia Sehr, O.P. Science Pavilion, which opened in 2009, is located on the south end of campus and adds 8,680 square feet to the campus. In May 2015, Bishop Lynch High School completed Phase 3 of the Veritas … From Generation to Generation Campaign, moving students and teachers into a two-story wing at the west side of campus. This addition to the Sister Cecilia Sehr O.P. Science Pavilion added 19 new classrooms – seven science and 12 core – to finish the project which launched in the summer of 2014 with the 28 remodeled Inadale and Ferguson Hall classrooms.

Athletics TURF PHOTO Roffino Stadium Roffino Stadium has been the home of Friars for more than 45 years. With a capacity of 2,500, Roffino Stadium has seen many brilliant athletes and witnessed hundreds of memorable games. The athletic complex includes an area for track and field events, is dedicated to the memory of former coach Brent Thorne. Adjacent to the track is McIngvale Field, home of the Friars Baseball team. Construction on the Ferguson Park Softball Field is almost complete and the park will be open next spring for the Lady Friars’ softball season. The project exhibits Bishop Lynch’s commitment to its East Dallas neighborhood, allowing BL to live out its priorities of service to the greater community.

Ed Haggar Complex In January 2006, Bishop Lynch formally opened the first phase of a multi-year endeavor to improve the athletic facilities on campus. The 9,000 square foot Ed Haggar Athletic Complex is featured at the south end of Roffino Stadium and is one of the premier high school athletic facilities in Dallas. The Ed Haggar Athletic Complex is home to Bishop Lynch’s nationally ranked Wrestling program and exhibits the most spectacular weight room in TAPPS. Additionally, the complex houses concession stands and restroom facilities.

The BL Gymnasiums For decades, the Bishop Lynch “Legacy Gymnasium” was the home of hundreds of championships. The Legacy Gym has seen numerous state titles from volleyball, men’s basketball and has been dominated by the rise of the Lady Friar’s women’s basketball team to national prominence with a record 27 Texas state championships. The gym also serves as the venue for school Masses and is the hub of student activities throughout the year. With the completion of the Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex, the largest addition to the Bishop Lynch campus since 1963, the Athletic Department expanded its practice/ performance opportunities! The 45,000 square-foot facility includes a 1,500-seat Competition Gymnasium which can accommodate three volleyball courts and two full basketball courts, an Athletic Lobby with central ticketing, restrooms and trophy display, three new Varsity Locker Rooms, a second weight room and the Athletic Directors’ Office Suite.

Athletic Director September 1, 2015 Dear Friar Friends Welcome to another school year and Friar Athletics season. This year should be an exciting year in all of our sports! The three-‐time defending state champion volleyball team proves to be as strong as ever and will challenge for a fourth straight state championship. Our Lady Friar Soccer team is also coming off of a wonderful state championship last year, defeating Ursuline Academy to end a 24 year run. They too are geared up to be another strong contender during their season. All of our athletic teams qualified for the playoffs last year, some even making deep runs into the playoffs. We encourage you to support our Friar Athletics program by joining our Athletic Booster Club and attending the meetings which are held on the first Monday of each month at 7:00 in the BL Bistro. Athletic Boosters help support Athletic events and facilities through membership, sponsorships and the annual Bishop Lynch Golf and Tennis Classic. We thank you for your dedicated support and wonderful school spirit which makes Bishop Lynch an unparalleled success among other schools in Texas. Catch the spirit! We also welcome our guests from around the state to our ever-‐expanding campus. We expect all games to display good sportsmanship and pray that the athletes may compete free of injury. “Competition with Honor” is the TAPPS motto, and Jesus Christ is the reason for our school! Good luck to all teams and thanks for playing an integral part in the lives of our student athletes and the traditions of Bishop Lynch High School. Sincerely,

Andy Zihlman Athletic Director

The Bishop Lynch High School Sports Honor Roll was established in 1988 with the school’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. The purpose of the Honor Roll is to recognize deserving individuals who have contributed to the Friar athletic program. This group of athletes, coaches and founding families each left a mark on Bishop Lynch during their time on campus and created enduring memories in their lives since. Young or old, you will no doubt remember the contributions to Bishop Lynch that each of these honorees made during their lives as Friars. On October 3, 2014, Tony Roffino (posthumously), Larry Juricek ’82 and Erin Briskie ’02 were the latest added to our already impressive list.

Tony Roffino, Founding Father Born and raised in Dallas, Mr. Tony Roffino built a successful career as a homebuilder and developer in the real estate industry. He was married to Mary Theresa Scanlan and raised ten children - all who attended St. Pius X Catholic School and then Bishop Lynch High School. Tony’s connections to Bishop Lynch began when a core group of dedicated parents from St. Pius X, St. Thomas, St. Patrick, St. Bernard and other area parishes approached Bishop Thomas Gorman about building a high school in east Dallas. They were granted permission, and these area Catholic leaders began a Diocesanwide fundraiser that established two Catholic High Schools: Bishop Dunne High School and Bishop Lynch High School.

Front Pages.indd 12

Tony’s real passion was watching sports. Tony attended most Bishop Lynch football games, men and women’s basketball games, and numerous track events, both home and away. When the Bishop Lynch Administration approached him about building a football stadium, he rallied the cause and found many contributors to its development. He and his brother Charles asked that the stadium be named in honor of their parents—Charles T and Mary Georgia Ventura Roffino, from St. Thomas Parish. Tony went on to become one of the first deacons in St. Pius X Catholic Church. His favorite motto was “Love One Another” and his generous spirit always helped those in need. Even after 50 years, the Roffino family name is still renowned on the Bishop Lynch campus.

Larry Juricek, Class of 1982 While at Bishop Lynch in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Larry Juricek was an accomplished multi-sport athlete. Classmates will remember Larry as a four-year letter winner in baseball and a three-year winner in football. As a football player, Juricek had an amazing set of accomplishments in 1980 and 1981. He was selected to the All-District Football Team and All-State Football Team both years. Larry was also selected to the Dallas Morning News All-Dallas 2nd Team and was chosen as the “Defensive Player of the Year” in both 1980 and 1981.

In baseball, Larry was the “Sophomore of the Year” in 1979 and was selected to the All-District Team at two different positions, 3rd Base as a junior and 1st Base as a senior. He was also chosen as an All-State baseball player in his senior year. After leaving Bishop Lynch, Larry attended the University of Oklahoma, graduating in 1986. He is the proud father of three daughters: Hollynd, Teighlor and Lindsay.

Erin Briskie, Class of 2002 Erin Briskie is a standout Lady Friar swimmer from the Class of 2002. Briskie was a dominant TAPPS performer during her time on campus, leading the Lady Friars to the state meet each of her four years. She still holds the Bishop Lynch records for the 100M Backstroke, 100M Breaststroke and the 200 Individual Medley. Erin continued her swimming career on the collegiate level at Texas A&M University. During her four years in College Station, Erin specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley. She competed in NCAA Championships three years in a row and qualified for the United States Olympic Trials in 2004 and 2008.

Front Pages.indd 13

Since graduating from Texas A&M University, Erin has been teaching private swim lessons, and was a Texas A&M swim camp counselor for four years. Erin attributes her success in the pool to the skills and ethics instilled by her former Bishop Lynch coaches. Erin is in her third year as a Pods Swimming staff instructor and she looks to her previous experiences to help children recognize their own hidden potential, and boost their confidence.

“

Bishop Lynch prepared me for the world that I would face, and taught me to take advantage of every opportunity that is thrown my way.

“

What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? Definitely the work load. BL prepared me for the college schedule and rigorous homework.

Shelby is entering her senior year at the University of Oregon. During her collegiate career, she has won three national championships with the Acrobatics and Tumbling team.

Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had experienced? I wish that I had gotten more involved and joined more clubs.

At Bishop Lynch, Shelby ran track, played volleyball as a freshman and was a cheerleader during her junior year. She was a member of three teams that won Worlds at cheer.

What fond memories do you remember while at BL? The hype during Homecoming week! Name you favorite teacher(s) at BL and why. Coach Paul May. He is a very smart man and had a lot of things to teach us about the world and finances.

Shelby is pursuing a major in General Social Science with a minor in Political Science.

What message do you have for current BL students? Take advantage of all of the opportunities BL has to offercollege credit classes, clubs, volunteer services — do it all! If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play your role on screen? Kerry Washington If you were starring in movie, who would you choose to be your co-star? Amy Poehler What plans do you have after college? I plan to coach Acrobatics and Tumbling!

Striving for academic excellence while playing sports at BL prepared me to succeed in the classroom and on the basketball court at Stanford.

What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? The importance of diversity and working together as a team Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had experienced? Compete in the annual Powder Puff tournament What fond memories do you remember while at BL? Having lunch every day with my friends Name you Favorite teacher(s) at BL and why. I did not have a favorite teacher, but I admired the teachers who were creative, and made learning fun and challenging.

“

Alex is a fifth-year senior at Stanford University and a member of three Pac-12 championship teams. She’s played in the Sweet 16 and Final Four twice. As a Lady Friar, she helped Bishop Lynch win three state championships. Alex is pursuing a double major in Science, Technology and Society, as well as Film and Media Studies.

What message do you have for current BL students? Take the time to enjoy the good moments in your life and don’t worry too much about the future. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play your role on screen? I don’t know. I’d let the casting director decide that one. If you were starring in movie, who would you choose to be your co-star? Neymar What plans do you have after college? Pursue a career in public relations and sports

“Veritas” the foundation of Bishop Lynch’s ethos, latin for truth. Integrating Veritas into your own foundations means being truthful to yourself, holding yourself accountable and maximizing your optimal potential. This was instilled in me at Bishop Lynch and it’s something that I developed over time in my collegiate career; it’s essential to success in the long-run. When you lie to yourself you’re setting yourself up for failure. Be sure to remain truthful to yourself, and you will see strides in your level of success.

What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? I learned to manage a rigorous academic course load, while maintaining optimum athletic performance. Being a collegiate athlete is all about budgeting your time. Bishop Lynch pushed me academically and prepared me for the academic rigors of a top tier University in our country. I’ve seen numerous occasions when student-athletes and even students along struggled to maintain or complete their academic tasks, because of Bishop Lynch I excelled where others struggled. You’re forged through adversity. Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had experienced? I wish I would have gotten involved in some of the mission trips, and study abroad trips that Bishop Lynch students have available to them. It will broaden your horizons, and can be an enlightening experience. It’s something I wish I valued more at the time. What fond memories do you remember while at BL? Study Hall, Taco Tuesdays and the football games are something I will always remember while attending Bishop Lynch. Not to mention, all of my teammates and coaches on Bishop Lynch’s wrestling team. We still all talk and hangout with one another, and I will never forget all of our wrestling trips and the camaraderie that we built over those years. They’re brothers to me, and it was nice to make history with them.

“

students it would be to never take Bishop Lynch for granted. Attending Bishop Lynch is a privilege, and although it may be tough at times, it is preparing you for things you cannot see yet. Not everyone gets the opportunity to attend such a great high school, we’re most fortunate. Remember to never quit under any circumstances, just keep pushing and success is sure to follow. That I can promise you. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play your role on screen? I would like to see either Mark Wahlberg, or Tom Hardy play my role. I feel they’re closest to my personality traits, and they’ve dated most of the hot women in Hollywood. If you were starring in movie, who would you choose to be your co-star? Mark Wahlberg, he is a true bro and his life is loosely portrayed in Entourage. What plans do you have after college? I have currently put together a package to OCS for Naval Special Warfare. Translation: I will be entering the Navy as an officer with the opportunity to be an Officer on a Navy Seal Team.

Name you Favorite teacher(s) at BL and why. All of the teachers that put up with me on a daily basis were my favorite teachers (which is all of them). However, I will go ahead and list some names that come to mind: Mr. Morillo (the chillest), Mr. Melancon, Mrs. Dunkins, Mrs. Butler, Mr. Cogswell, Mr. Rebuck, Mr. Post (RIP), Mr. Norman (I was an Econ Major…go figure), Mrs. Sosa and Mrs. Wagner! What message do you have for current BL students? If there is one thing I would like to convey to current Bishop Lynch

I see Bishop Lynch as a home away from home. I have an unbreakable bond with it unlike anywhere else, because no matter how far away I am, or how long I am away, I can always come back and be received with love and open arms. THAT is the true meaning of family!

What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? One of the things that I have learned at BL that has helped me the most, especially in my field of study, is how to write a college level paper. BL made me more comfortable and confident in my writing, and I know that I am more than capable to write a paper with the guidance that Bishop Lynch gave me. Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had experienced? I wish I had become a part of the Blackfriars Guild earlier on in my high school career.

If you were starring in movie, who would you choose to be your co-star? Liam Neeson What plans do you have after college? My plans after college are to become a sports performance trainer and help mentor and train kids and young adults to reach their full potential in everything they do.

What fond memories do you remember while at BL? One of my favorite memories was when we beat Nolan at their place my senior year to snap their ridiculously long win streak. (They were also ranked #1 in large private schools in Texas by the Dallas Morning News. I also loved being the Emcee at pep rallies my senior year, along side my best bud Nick Chabot. Name you Favorite teacher(s) at BL and why. This is a VERY hard decision because I liked so many teachers at BL, but I’d have to choose Coach May. Coach May was my favorite because he was always brutally honest with us, he was very engaging in class and you never new what Coach May was going to have for us in class that day. Whether it was a rant about inflation or how simple math relates to all life’s questions, I always looked forward to attending his class. Coach May was also an unbelievable mentor and helped me a great amount in planning out my future, for which I am eternally grateful. What message do you have for current BL students? At Bishop Lynch, you are not alone. You are a part of a family that you will be connected with for the rest of your life. We always have your back! If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play your role on screen? Taylor Kitsch. No doubt.

As the second Alumnus to be named to the head coach position, Coach Dasch oversaw the 50th Anniversary campaign and last year’s 8-5 team that featured all-time leading rusher Rawleigh Williams III. The 2014 ground attack led the DFW area in rushing and resulted in Williams III being named as the Texas Built Ford Tough Player of the Year and a finalist for the Tom Landry Award. The 2014 Friars advanced to the TAPPS state playoffs for a 23rd consecutive year. Coach Dasch graduated from Bishop Lynch in 1995 and attended the University of Alabama, where his love for coaching and working with kids found him in 1999 as a volunteer baseball coach at Tuscaloosa Academy under Alabama coaching legend Mike Notaro. He began coaching football in the fall of 1999 and quickly moved up the ranks at the Academy, becoming Defensive Coordinator in 2001 and Head Football Coach in October of 2001. After three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Coach Dasch left Alabama and returned to Texas, accepting a position at Bishop Lynch as the Special Teams Coordinator and Head Strength Coach. Over the next 11 years, Coach Dasch served in many roles as a Friar including Defensive Coordinator, but he has never strayed too far from his beloved set of defensive backs, which he has coached for all of his 16 years in coaching. Coach Dasch also serves as the Assistant Athletic Director, dealing with Athletic Operations and other sports on a daily basis.
