fall 2014

letter from the president Our 50th Anniversary celebrations concluded with the dedication of the Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex and renovated classrooms on August 17, 2014. Just as he celebrated Mass for the start of our Golden Anniversary in September 2013, we were honored that Bishop Kevin Farrell presided at the year’s concluding events. It was a great year full of commemorations, events and significant facility expansions and renovations. I thank everyone who participated: students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents, as your school enjoyed celebrating the foundations of our Dominican founders and the accomplishments of those who have succeeded them. The community has been deeply saddened by the death of David Post, faculty member, Mock Trial moderator and Men’s Golf coach for over twenty years. Although he passed away in July, even now in late November we receive heartfelt expressions of sadness and appreciation for the wonderful dedication David gave to so many aspects of school life: social studies classes, the golf program and especially Mock Trial—where his teams received state and national recognition over many years. Rest in the Lord’s Peace, David!

“These have been blessed years for me and my family, and we deeply appreciate the kindnesses and support we have received since July 1, 1982.”

The official announcement of my retirement as President of Bishop Lynch was made in March 2014, effective June 30, 2015. This date will conclude my 50th year as a Catholic high school educator and 33rd year as head of our school. These have been blessed years for me and my family, and we deeply appreciate the kindnesses and support we have received since July 1, 1982. The school is well-positioned to embark on new levels of fulfilling its sacred mission to form young men and women who “strive for excellence, seek truth and work for justice in the world.” My humble thanks to everyone who—for 51 years—has made Bishop Lynch a school of greatness. Blessings to all for advancing our school to new levels of excellence over the next half-century, and beyond. Sincerely,

Edward E. Leyden President

david post tribute

On July 2, 2014, the Bishop Lynch community was deeply saddened and forever changed by the passing of Social Studies teacher, Mr. David Post after an 18 month battle with cancer. Mr. Post was a master teacher, colleague, mentor and friend who, for 20 years, served BL and hundreds of our students teaching Government, United States History, Men’s Golf and, his real passion, Mock Trial. Mr. Post began the Mock Trial program over 15 years ago. In their first year of competition, the team came out of nowhere to make it to the finals of regional competition, an almost unheard of feat. Since then, the Mock Trial team has advanced to the state tournament four times and the regional finals nine times. In 2007, the team came in second place in the prestigious New York Empire City Tournament in a field of 26 of the top teams in the nation. That same year, the Mock Trial team competed in Harvard Law School’s Seminar. Only the top programs in the nation were invited to participate. The team won all three trials in its field, impressing judges from some of the best collegiate Mock Trial programs in the nation. Mr. Post’s name and impact in the Mock Trial world will forever live on. On October 24, 2014, Empire Mock Trial, a nonprofit organization which promotes legal education – posthumously awarded Mr. Post the William Hennessy Outstanding Educator Award, an annual recognition given to one exceptional educator.

06

Empire Mock Trial also renamed its Spirit of Empire award in Mr. Post’s honor. This annual recognition is bestowed upon the school which best exhibits the values of civility and professionalism during Empire’s New York program, qualities that Mr. Post held in the highest regard. Mr. Post and the BL Mock Trial team were charter members of the Empire Mock Trial organization and competitions. The BL Mock Trial teams have competed in this tournament since its inception. “The David Post Spirit of Empire award will forever honor Mr. Post’s legacy and impact,” said Empire President Justin Matarrese. “He will always be with us.” Among his many roles, Post served as chair of the Social Studies Department from 1996-2001. David founded and coordinated the Teacher Mentoring Program. He served as the Men’s Golf head coach and as the moderator of the Bi-Partisan Club. The “Postman,” one of his loving monikers, was a self-proclaimed “ardent advocate of the value of copious divergent cultural awareness.” Therefore, he organized an annual Spring Break trip to a foreign land. He was extremely well traveled, having been to Europe more than 25 times, to Asia, and all over the Northern Hemisphere and Caribbean - from the Cayman Islands to Alaska with his students and family. Mr. Post had an incredible demand of his classroom. Students were challenged and pushed to the farthest

limits of their intelligence, learning that their voice was important and would make a difference as they ventured off to their higher education. Mr. Post was a loving family man, truly devoted to his wife Susan and daughters Sarah ’04 and Hannah ’14. According to his personal biography, he had “a voracious appetite for reading, enjoying anything from Stephen King to Gore Vidal to Plato.” He was a lover of both high and popular culture, so you would have found him “at a Vivaldi concerto at the Myerson, a U2 concert at American Airlines Arena or a modernist Avant Garde Strindberg play in Deep Ellum.” If you were to ask, student after student would tell you that their time with Mr. Post changed their lives. When BL graduates return to visit their alma mater, Mr. Post’s room was undoubtedly one of the first and most visited by all alumni he taught. American historian Henry Brooks Adams once said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” This is extremely true of Mr. Post. It is impossible to measure the lives he affected. Thank you, Mr. Post. You will live on forever in students, colleagues, friends and family. by Michele Longoria Student Communications Adviser

As a member of the BL community for more than 30 years as an alumna, parent of alumni and parent of two current students, Sandy Sellers Stansbury ’82 has dedicated many hours to countless initiatives and making a significant difference in our community. Whether it is spear-heading the Friar Friends group or volunteering with the Alumni Association, she has been most passionate and energized in her work. Her ideas are innovative and contagious, and her attention to detail and organizational skills are appreciated by all. friars vs. friars rematch During Bishop Lynch High School’s 50th Anniversary year, the Friars welcomed Fenwick High School from Oak Park, IL, to play in a dynamic football game under the Texas renowned “Friday Night Lights.” Sharing school colors, a mascot, a fight song, a school motto and a Dominican Heritage, Bishop Lynch and Fenwick honored the opening of BLHS in 1963 by playing in Roffino Stadium during our 2013 Founders Week. The Friars from Fenwick won the game 32-14 on the strength of a great ground game and a stout defense, but this year, the Lynch Friars were eager to even up the score. And, that they did!

Members from Friar Football, Cheer, Brigade, Athletic Trainers, coaches, administrators and staff (totaling 150) from Bishop Lynch High School traveled to Chicago for a rematch game on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Concordia Stadium. In what many were calling one of the best high school football games they had ever seen, the Friars from Bishop Lynch wrote a different end to the story this year and defeated the Friars from Fenwick in dramatic fashion with a score of 35-32! The Chicago trip officially concluded Bishop Lynch High School’s year-long 50th Anniversary celebrations – and what a way to end this historic year!

The Bishop Lynch Brigade and Cheerleaders create a spirit tunnel prior to the Friars vs. Friars rematch.

Lynch linebackers Gabe Brace (junior #42) and Jake Sikorski (senior #52) sack Fenwick’s quarterback on their final possession to win the game.

The Bishop Lynch side of the bleachers erupted as the Friars of Bishop Lynch defeat the Fenwick Friars 35-32.

FATHER GAMBRO scholarship

Father John M. Gambro, O.P., was among nine Dominican friars from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL who helped establish Bishop Lynch High School in 1963. He impacted the lives of many BL students as a leader and a teacher through 1978. Father Gambro returned to Fenwick High School before retiring in 2002, and today lives in Chicago. We are pleased to announce that the Father Gambro Endowed Scholarship has been established with almost $100,000 invested into the fund! With an initial goal of $25,000, we were humbled and amazed as many alumni and friends stepped up with gifts which helped meet an additional $50,000 Matching Challenge from an anonymous alumni donor. The outpouring of support for Father Gambro will continue to impact the BL Community and generations of future Friars. Father Gambro celebrated with many of his friends on September 5, 2014, at a special reception in Chicago the weekend of the Friars vs. Friars football showoff.
