2014 - 2015

From The

Office of the President September 2014

Dear Spirited Friar Fans and our Guests: The 2014-2015 season celebrates a very important milestone for Bishop Lynch athletics and arts. With the completion of the Leyden Athletics & Arts Complex, our facilities finally match the quality of our programs. This new 45,000 square-foot facility includes a 1,500 seat performance gym, large and acoustically perfect band hall, weight room, three art studios, two classrooms, dance studio and office suites for athletics, business and advancement operations. We are very pleased with the facility and hope our fans are as proud of these improvements as we are. Most important, this construction will serve our students for many years to come. If you are able to look the west side of campus, the site of the former Queen of Peace Convent/St. Dominic Hall, you will see 30,000 square feet of new construction. Opening in May 2015, this addition will house 12 classrooms and seven combination classrooms/science labs. Your school is growing in every way! Athletically, 2014-2015 is a uniquely exciting year as we conclude the 50th anniversary celebrations. Last year we hosted our founding school—Fenwick in Chicago—for a “Friars vs. Friars” football game. While the outcome of this friendly competition was not what we hoped for, the football team traveled to Chicago in early September to again play our founding “Friars,” winning one of the school’s most exciting games ever, 35-32. Please join me in being made proud by the superior Bishop Lynch athletic programs, our coaches and student athletes, who demonstrate the “pursuit of excellence” in daily practice and games—whether at home or away. Our challenge as parents and fans: support all our teams in a spirit of Christ-like competition and fellowship— hallmarks of the tradition handed down to us over the past 50+ years! I look forward to seeing you at the games! GO FRIARS! Sincerely,

Edward E. Leyden

EAST DALLAS Bishop Lynch High School is located on 22 acres at the corner of Ferguson Road and Peavy Road in the northern part of East Dallas. Nestled in the heart of the Casa View area, Bishop Lynch is surrounded by historic neighborhoods and distinguished landmarks.

White Rock White Rock Lake, the largest body of water within Dallas city limits, is located only four miles from the Bishop Lynch campus. The picturesque park surrounding the lake is home to jogging and bicycle trails, impressive homes and a variety of wildlife. One of the main draws is the White Rock Spillway on Garland Road. Located on the east side of the lake is Flag Pole Hill, a gathering place for the young and the young-at-heart for several generations. Families picnic, school children play and young lovers stroll the expanse of beautiful lawn surrounding the hill. Just north of the lake is the Dallas Arboretum, home of the DeGolyer Estate. The Arboretum provides a tranquil setting for many of the city’s weddings and those families who are looking for a beautiful backdrop for family portraits.

Quaint neighborhood shops and historic centers, greenways and parks dot the area.

Lakewood The neighborhoods of historic Dallas are located within a five-mile radius of Bishop Lynch. Swiss Avenue, the original home to some of the wealthiest families in the area, is still the location of beautiful turn-of-the-century mansions with manicured lawns and wide shady drives. Historic Lakewood Shopping Center features night life with dining and entertainment venues, including Matt’s Ranchero Martinez (Matt Martinez ’93). The Lakewood Country Club, The Dallas Athletic Club and Tennyson Park provide entertainment and retreat for many Bishop Lynch families. Bishop Lynch

In the early ‘60s, on the far eastern side of Dallas, a few enterprising parish pastors and parents founded a high school intended to serve a wide diversity of children-budding scholars, talented athletes and brilliant thespians. All who sought truth and knowledge were welcomed. From this early vision has grown a truly outstanding Catholic educational institution. Twice awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence, Bishop Lynch High School is the standard of Catholic School education in Texas. Serving the youth in Dallas and its surrounding communities, Bishop Lynch continues to lead the way in providing a unparalleled experience to a high school student. The Bishop Lynch main school building consists of four main hallways surrounding an inner courtyard, the gymnasium, The Catholic Foundation Performing Arts Center and the newly opened Sister Cecila Sehr Science Pavilion. Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex Perhaps the most exciting addition is the Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex which opened in May 2014. The 45,000 square-foot facility includes a 1,500-seat Competition Gymnasium/Convocation Center, second weight room, new Varsity locker rooms and breath-taking classrooms which are completely dedicated to Band, Dance and Visual Arts. Chapel/Atrium One of the outstanding features of Bishop Lynch is the atrium area located at the front of the school. A popular gathering spot for students, the space is also used for receptions, dinners and even dances. The St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, is located in the center of the campus, provides seating for up to seventy students and is used for the celebration of Mass, prayer services and other religious gatherings and ceremonies.

2014 - 2015

Theatre McGonigle Theatre is home to Bishop Lynch’s exceptional performing arts program. With a seating capacity of 380, the theatre is an intimate, stylish space for all types of presentations. With its production quality audio visual equipment and theater style backstage area, the state-of – the-art facility has been heralded as the premier performance venue in East Dallas.

Science Wing The Sister Cecilia Sehr, O.P. Science Pavilion is located on the south end of campus and adds 8,680 square feet to the campus. The building includes three science classrooms with separate lab and lecture space, meeting and workroom areas for faculty, and additional storage. The Sister Cecilia Sehr, O.P. Science Pavilion also contains offices for the campus ministry and school chaplain, connecting our most modern facility to the fabric of our mission since Bishop Lynch opened in 1963.

Athletics TURF PHOTO Roffino Stadium Roffino Stadium has been the home of Friars for more than 45 years. With a capacity of 2,500, Roffino Stadium has seen many brilliant athletes and witnessed hundreds of memorable games. The athletic complex includes an area for track and field events, is dedicated to the memory of former coach Brent Thorne. Adjacent to the track is McIngvale Field, home of the Friars Baseball team. The Lady Friars Softball team plays their home games on the softball field at the opposite end of campus.

Ed Haggar Complex In January 2006, Bishop Lynch formally opened the first phase of a multi-year endeavor to improve the athletic facilities on campus. The 9,000 square foot Ed Haggar Athletic Complex is featured at the south end of Roffino Stadium and is one of the premier high school athletic facilities in Dallas. The Ed Haggar Athletic Complex is home to Bishop Lynch’s nationally ranked Wrestling program and exhibits the most spectacular weight room in TAPPS. Additionally, the complex houses concession stands and restroom facilities.

2014 - 2015

The BL Gymnasiums For decades, the Bishop Lynch “Legacy Gymnasium” has been the home of championships. The Legacy gym has seen numerous state titles from volleyball, men’s basketball and has been dominated by the rise of the Lady Friar’s women’s basketball team to national prominence with a record 27 Texas state championships. The gym also serves as the venue for school Masses and is the hub of student activities throughout the year. With the completion of the Leyden Arts & Athletics Complex, the largest addition to the Bishop Lynch campus since 1963, the Athletic Department expanded its practice/ performance opportunities! The 45,000 square-foot facility includes a 1,500-seat Competition Gymnasium which can accommodate three volleyball courts and two full basketball courts, an Athletic Lobby with central ticketing, restrooms and trophy display, three new Varsity Locker Rooms, a second weight room and the Athletic Directors’ Office Suite.

Bri Aguilar BL Class of 2011 College: Western Texas College Football

Bishop Lynch gave me a forever family. I’ve met friends, teachers, and coaches that have turned into family and I know that whenever I return to Lynch, I’m home.

Tell us how you got to be a part of the Texas Rangers organization? Getting the invitation in 2012 to try out to be a Texas Rangers ball girl was a big deal in itself. I didn’t know anyone in the Rangers organization, and I thought getting “the call” was next to impossible. I didn’t make the 2012 team, but I re-applied and got the invitation again in 2013 and made it that year! The 2014 season is my second year as a Texas Rangers ball girl. I know I am blessed to have this opportunity and appreciate it every time I put my Rangers uniform on and hit the field. What are some of your most memorable moments from your career with the Texas Rangers so far: Being on the field and, in front of thousands of fans, warming up with the Rangers and visiting teams which have included the Yankees, Red Sox, Oakland A’s and Angels, among others has been something I will never forget. Josh Hamilton became my favorite player after reading his book in high school. So, my first real star-struck moment happened when I got to warm-up with him in 2013. I felt the same nervousness when I warmedup again with him this season. Jose Tabata of the Pittsburgh Pirates showed me how to throw a curve ball in between innings. I actually got to use my new skill on Alex Rios and Shin-Shoo Choo during warm-up one game, so I returned the favor much to their surprise! The 2014 season was the start of my veteran status which meant I was eligible to work Opening Day - it was an electrifying experience. I could feel the energy coming from the thousands of screaming fans – it was incredible (the environment was similar to the 2013 playoff game I worked as well). Being on the field when baseball greats Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter played their last games in our stadium - again, something I will never forget. Getting to talk to the fans, especially with young girls who are or want to be in sports and being sort of a female athlete example is one of the very best parts of my job. I don’t know where this opportunity will take me but it has been and will continue to be a great ride getting there! GO RANGERS!!

What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? The most important thing BL taught me was discipline. Discipline was demanded both in the classroom and on the field at Lynch. Likewise, in college I continue to succeed in the classroom because I am disciplined enough to focus on what is important in the long run. Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had? I wish I would have participated in more clubs or contributed just a little more of my time outside of the classroom and sports so I could have become that much more valuable to the BL community. What fond memories do you remember while at BL? A couple of fond memories I have from BL were of Homecoming and Friday night football games. In my opinion, Lynch has the biggest and best Homecoming traditions in the state. And, of course, who doesn’t love Friday night football?! Who was your favorite teacher at BL and why? My favorite teacher and coach was Amy Wheeler (a.k.a. Johnson) because she was the nicest, yet hardest coach I’ve ever had. She demands two of the most important things out you: hard work and cooperation. As long as you work your hardest every single day and cooperate with her rules and standards, you don’t have to worry about where you stand with her. What message do you have for current BL students? No dream is ever too big. Although you may have to sacrifice what you want for what you need, nothing is more satisfying than knowing your hard work has paid off. Stay focused and never settle. Once you’ve done all you can do, push yourself to do more and be more.

Bishop Lynch molded me into the man I am today.

Tell us about your college career highlights: Our football team is backto-back conference champions, we have not lost a regular season game in two and a half years. I’m lucky to be part of the number one offense in the nation! What were some of your high school highlights: I was honored by being named 1st Team All-District and 1st Team All-State my junior and senior year. As a Friar I had 62 touchdowns in my high school career, approximately 3000 rushing yards and I threw for over 2000 yards, playing QB, WR, RB, PR, KR and DB. What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? I learned how to treat people with respect, how to work hard in the classroom and time management. Those are very key things when you become a college student, especially a college athlete. Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had experienced? I wish I had the chance to experience a state championship in football. We were able to make it to the state game my sophomore year, but fell just short. What fond memories do you remember while at BL? My best memories were all of the great friends and teachers I met at Bishop Lynch. I still keep in touch with many of my friends I graduated with in 2011. I will also always remember all of the good times I had while playing football and golf. Who was your favorite teacher at BL and why? I liked a lot of my teachers while attending Bishop Lynch, but my favorite was Mr. Kirsch. He always made class very interesting and I learned something new every single day. What message do you have for current BL students? Always follow your dreams. Do not let anyone tell you that you are not good enough or you can’t do something. Let that fuel your fire and help you achieve your personal goals.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you like to see play your role on screen? Hands down Adam Sandler. He has been my favorite actor ever since I could remember. He is the funniest guy alive. If you were starring in movie, who would you choose to be your co-star? I would probably want Chris Farley by my side. He is another funny guy and I know I would enjoy my time being around him while making the movie. What plans do you have after college? It has always been my dream to play professional football. Since the chance of making it to the NFL is so slim, I would also love to be a sports agent or something else sports related in business.

David Garcia BL Class of 2011 College: The University of North Texas Bishop Lynch Football and Powerlifting Coach

What is something you learned at BL that has helped you in college? Hard work pays off every time! Name one thing you didn’t do at BL but wish you had experienced? I regret not being a power lifter. I would have been a good asset to the powerlifting team, especially because of my mindset towards lifting weights. I trained with the powerlifting team every morning for four years, but I never actually competed in powerlifting meets. Ironically, now I coach the Men’s and Women’s Powerlifting teams at BL. What fond memories do you remember while at BL? A few come to mind: Winning the second round playoff game against Houston St. Pius X at their home field as time expired with a 30+ yard field goal. Final Score 21-22 ...... Experiencing the brand new synthetic field turf and track my senior year ..... Being the first and only Freshman Football team to go undefeated! (11-0 season) ...... Having the best four years of my short life. Who was your favorite teacher at BL and why? I was beyond blessed to have amazing teachers all 4 years so naming one teacher would not be justifiable. -Mrs. Persinger & Mrs. Dunkins for being the best English teachers I’ve ever had, both were extremely knowledgeable. -Mr. Kirsch & Mr. Melancon for teaching me life lessons throughout historical events. -Coach Roos & the Ms. Mannaris (both sisters) for…well, being AWESOME. Enough said. -Coach Taylor for trusting me to dissect dead animals. -Mrs. Sosa Rodriguez & Mrs. Wofford for not letting me forget my native language of Spanish, because my mother would have killed me! What message do you have for current BL students? To make sure you thank your parents for everything that they do and sacrifice for you to have a great education in a great environment.

Coach Garcia’s Fenwick travel attire ... TOO GOOD not to include!

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play your role? FEZ - from “That ’70s Show” - Wilmer Valderrama If you were starring in a movie, who would you choose to be your co-star? Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson What plans do you have after college? To continue what I love doing … coaching Texas high school football!

My senior year, the football team traveled to Houston to play St. Pius X. I kicked the game winning 38 yard field goal out of the stadium as time expired to beat St. Pius 22-21.

Enjoy the little things, your friends, and your experiences at Bishop Lynch. When you go off to college, that Bishop Lynch pride will come out and you’ll be proud to talk about your alma mater and why Bishop Lynch is the greatest place to learn and grow. 2014 - 2015 Football Media Guide September 2014

Thank you for purchasing this copy of the 2014-2015 Bishop Lynch Football Media Guide! This sixth edition of the Bishop Lynch Media Guide is the continuation of our multi-year endeavor to provide you with a thorough source of information for your fall football season! As always, we continue to profile our seniors in their respective sports and will give you an inside look into Bishop Lynch Athletics like you have never seen before! Seven years ago, we began a quest to rediscover the missing pieces of our athletic history in the hopes of capturing an in-depth, comprehensive story of Bishop Lynch Athletics. With such a rich athletic history, Bishop Lynch was in need of a central source for sports information—an almanac to catalogue all of the accomplishments of our student-athletes, the records they set, state championships teams and national record holders. This year, you’ll notice we have not included the “statistics” section in the guide. During the extensive process of gathering historical data to include in “The Way” – our on-going master design with a common path connecting our campus – we did a complete audit of our 50 year athletic history and we will be ready to include it in the 20152016 Football Media Guide! As you thumb through this book please pay special attention to the sports action photos, many of which were provided by BL Football grandfather Larry Nance, Media Guide Chair/Football and Cheer mom Heather Smith, Wes Duke with Impressionist, as well as Bishop Lynch past-parents Andy and Parris Reine. Our hope is to provide Bishop Lynch with a thorough historical record of one of the proudest, most successful athletic programs in the state of Texas. We hope you enjoy this edition and each one thereafter. As always, thank you for your support of Bishop Lynch Athletics! GO FRIARS!
