CELEBRATING OUR 50 th ANNIVERSARY

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

50 YEARS IN THE MAKING

T H E A N T I C I PA T E D M O M E N T I S H E R E ! As we kick-off the 2013-2014 school-year and celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our school with an exciting slate of events, we must take a moment to reflect on our many successes this past year. Spring 2013 was also filled with many exciting moments for our community. The Joseph P. Lynch Scholarship Auction event sold out. We launched a new and improved look in our materials. The A Cappella Choir had a transformative experience in Rome, and were in St. Peter’s Square for Pope Francis’ first public blessing. Back at home, our Powerlifting team and Women’s Track both celebrated State Championships. And, the Class of 2013 was offered more than $20.4 million in college scholarships as they moved beyond our campus. The Saturday after school ended, Bishop Kevin Farrell joined us to for a unique Demolition Celebration event to kick-off construction on the largest project our campus has seen to date. As we bid farewell to the VPA/Priory Building we also recalled our founders, the Dominicans who helped build the school, lived on the campus for many years, and established the priorities for scholarship and service that we continue today. New construction is proof that we continue to grow and encourage those values for students that will benefit from a BL education today and for many years in the future.

THE NEW LOOK

O F B I S H O P LY N C H H I G H S C H O O L We are excited to officially unveil Bishop Lynch High School’s new marketing and communications campaign, timed to coincide with our school’s 50th anniversary. Look around campus and you’ll notice a refreshed BL shield, a new Friar mascot, and a new advertising campaign featuring our students in the starring role. This warm, inviting, real campaign celebrates our students’ successes, in the classroom, on the field, and in their daily lives. It shows students having fun. It shows them as individuals, and that Bishop Lynch is a place where they can grow to their potential. Our goal with this campaign was to put students first, with their images and their voices. We feel that they are the best examples of what Bishop Lynch High School can do. And we think the tagline sums it up best:

At Bishop Lynch, You Will.

We have come so far, and we have a great legacy to build upon as we prepare for the future of Bishop Lynch together. This is a special time to be at Bishop Lynch and we can’t wait to see you at our golden anniversary celebrations.

Sincerely,

Edward E. Leyden PRESIDENT

competed for their spots to represent Bishop Lynch at this year’s State Championship Tournament. Joey Molina ’13 was among the elite athletes, as he demonstrated a remarkable performance earning the title of State Runner-Up in the TAPPS Men’s 5A Singles.

Following his visit to our campus in early May, Bishop Kevin Farrell shared his thoughts on BL’s Dual Enrollment program on his blog:

7

“Bishop Lynch High School graduates are entering colleges and universities as sophomores and juniors in their first year thanks to the school’s Dual Enrollment Program which offers college credit for certain high school courses. Lynch, the largest private high school in the State of Texas, hosts the largest Dual Enrollment Program in the state, offering more than 50 courses a year in English, math, history, science and the arts. In the 2012-2013 academic year 360 students (grades 9-12) participated. This is the kind of initiative by our Catholic schools that makes them stand out among educational institutions and assures parents that their children are receiving not only a Christian values centered education but outstanding academic formation. Bishop Lynch will observe its 50th anniversary in September. I congratulate the administration and faculty of Bishop Lynch High School for achieving and maintaining the highest level of academic excellence for five decades.”

This is the ladies’ first domination since 2006. The Men’s Track Team also showed an impressive performance by securing fifth in State. Congratulations to Coach Billy Clark, his staff and his athletes for an outstanding job!

In April, the club

ART FOR CHANGE volunteered at the Special

Olympic Regional Horse Show where they shared their art and talents at the Face Painting and Craft tables. Though this club is new on campus, they have already started planning ways to reach out to the Bishop Lynch and surrounding communities.

The men and women of

THE BL SOCCER PROGRAM fought with nothing short of their best, earning much deserved success in their seasons.

The Men’s Soccer Team, coached by Mark Melancon ’83, ended their season at the State Tournament, taking 2nd in the State. Coach Darrin Hedges led his Lady Friars toward the State Title, where they finished their season as Semi-Finalists in the Final Four.

THE TAPPS

Exciting changes are happening for the Bishop Lynch Athletic Program as we enter into our 50th Anniversary Year.

11

Coach Ben Dasch ’95 was named the new Head Coach of the Friar Football Team and has the distinction of being only the second Alumnus to be named as Head Football Coach at Bishop Lynch. Coach Dasch’s extensive coaching background includes several other coaching and head coaching positions, but, ultimately, his love for the Friars drew him “home” in 2004. Knowing of Coach Dasch’s intense passion for the Friar Football program and his athletes, the theater erupted as the football team was notified of the exciting news! Changes in the Men’s Basketball program are occurring as well as Kyle May ’03 accepted the position as Head Coach. May’s background in basketball stretches back to earlier days at Bishop Lynch when he was a star on the 2002 TAPPS State Championship Basketball Team. Kyle continued as a guard at Austin College, where he represented the Friars with a reputation for tough play, high effort and a passion for competition. Kyle, Lynch’s first Men’s Basketball Alumnus Head Coach, returned to BL as an Assistant Coach and has coached for five years, serving as a Varsity Assistant and the Friars' Head Freshman Coach. Coach May will replace former Basketball Head Coach Barry Knott, who has been named Men’s Golf Head Coach at Bishop Lynch. In Knott’s nine seasons as Men’s Basketball Coach, the Friars were consistently in the hunt for the District Championship, winning an outright title in 2008-2009. Barry was named the TAPPS 1-5A District Coach of the Year in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 and also honored for his 2009 30-win season when he was named TAPPS 5A Basketball Coach of the Year. Coach Knott is looking forward to transitioning his efforts out on the links helping to develop the Men and Women’s Golf Programs and eventually guiding the Friars to a state championship.

We hope you will join us for what’s sure to be an exciting 50th Anniversary year!

13 14

The Blackfriars competed in the Dallas Summer High School Musical Awards for their spring production of Grease.

Kim Yoxall ’13 was awarded a scholarship from Dallas Summer Musicals, for her work as Rizzo in this year’s production. Kim will put her scholarship to good use at The University of Texas at Austin, where she plans to study Acting.

In March, students, faculty and staff rolled up their sleeves giving the gift of life in the annual

clinched the Academic District Championship in February and was named State-Runner Up at the TAPPS State Competition in April. Placing first in their divisions were Emily Archer ’13 in Spelling, Sasha Castro ’14 in Applied Design and Matthew Whitby ’16 in Sculpture.

15

At the invitation of the Vatican,

The Bishop Lynch A Cappella Choir traveled to Rome this past March to participate in the 500th Anniversary of the Vatican's Palestrina Choir. They were one of only 100 choirs worldwide to have received this invitation. The students, faculty and chaperones in attendance all shared growth in character and faith through the wonderful opportunity. Singing at The Vatican was an unforgettable experience, made even more miraculous on the eve of their departure, when the historical announcement of our new Pope was made. The A Cappella Choir made the most of the honor, and represented the Bishop Lynch Community beautifully.

SERVICE

AUCTION

BISHOP LYNCH OUTREACH

Beyond Our Walls: A Community Engaged in Christ >> BY DEACON BILL FOBES, CAMPUS MINISTER Some think that teenagers are lazy, self-centered, and have as their mantra, “What’s in it for me?” While this certainly may be true in some cases, the vast majority of high school students do not fit in this category. Teenagers may be over committed in terms of activities, chronically sleep deprived, have varied interests that challenge classroom teachers to creatively engage the student in ways that resonate and seem to be able to text when they are not supposed to by mental telepathy as they do not move a muscle or look at a keyboard . . . but “lazy and self-centered” they are not. If you live with a teenager in your house you may see some less than admirable qualities on display from time to time. However much to your surprise, the teenager at home is not necessarily the same maturing young woman or man they present to the rest of the world. Recall a conversation with a teacher who applauds your child and think if you have ever wondered, “Are we talking about my child?” Bishop Lynch High School is faithful to Catholic Tradition and to the Dominican heritage of scholarship and service. While, as an academic institution, we closely track the scholarship aspect of our foundation through national testing results, grades, and the over $20.4 million in scholarship offers to our most recent graduating senior class, often we take the service component of our formation for granted and fail to recognize its value or magnitude. The foundation of service is evident in the social outreach of the community. While all Bishop Lynch students have a service learning component of their Theology classes, these approximately 34,000 service hours represent only a portion of the social outreach experience. The role of service and outreach is to enhance the development of our social conscience, and to help focus our gaze on the needs in our community beyond the walls of Bishop Lynch. As such, through social outreach we: • Move Catholic Social Teaching from the classroom to the real world; • Shape individuals from head to heart, moving from thought to action; and • Further develop the reality of our shared God-given human dignity Service is not just the purview of Theology classes, it needs to become a way of life and many of our classes, clubs and teams have integrated service to others as a component of their program as well. A brief listing will show the breadth and depth of the impact of an active social conscience on the life of the community: • • • • •

BL Baseball volunteered at the Salvation Army to sort/arrange bags for Christmas The French Club/Honor Society raised funds for “Hope for Haiti” Men’s Basketball worked in the warehouse at the North Texas Food Bank The Science Department donated equipment to an orphanage in India The TAPPS Fine Art Club created works of art to be auctioned for Art Conspiracy benefiting Girls Rock Dallas and the W.T. White Academy of Visual and Performing Arts • The Student Council participated in the Love4Kids Christmas party, collected funds for West, TX and Moore, OK storm relief, and wrote post cards and raised funds for the Make a Wish Foundation • The Habitat for Humanity Club raised $3,000 for the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity and helped refurbish the new Veteran’s Center, and participated in over ten house builds for first time homeowners

THE 2013 JOSEPH P. LYNCH SCHOLARSHIP AUCTION

was another record breaking year, raising over $215,000 and entertaining a sold out crowd! Thank you to all of our sponsors, attendees and volunteers for your commitment to furthering the mission of Bishop Lynch High School.

Please visit www.bishoplynch.org for a complete listing of our 2012-2013 volunteer outreach. Beyond these walls of ours many needs abound. Luke 12:48 reminds us that, “much will be required of the person entrusted with much.” We are stewards of the many graces and blessings and talents given us by God and are to acknowledge that our gifts are from our loving God, to be cultivated and nurtured by our use of these gifts for the good of our community, and these gifts of ours are to be returned to God with increase. CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP IS LIFELONG LEARNING AND THESE TEENAGERS OF OURS ARE OFF TO A GREAT START.

The Class of 2013 participated in our very first “5 for 5 Senior Giving Program”. We asked every senior to consider pledging just $5 annually for 5 years and 2013 really stepped up to the plate! 80% of the class committed to giving over $6,000 in the next 5 years. Furthermore, in memory of their classmate Ally Alexandrou, all funds raised by the Class of 2013 will be going to a scholarship in Ally’s name. A five year commitment to the Senior Giving Campaign is an opportunity for our most recent alumni to keep BL traditions alive and allows future students to begin new traditions of their own.

FIFTY EXPERIENCES for FIFTY YEARS

1) DOMINICAN HERITAGE

4) TRANSPORTATION

Bishop Lynch High School was founded by priests and nuns of the Dominican Order - the Order of Preachers. The Four Pillars of Dominican Life are Prayer, Community, Study and Service. At Bishop Lynch, scholarship and academics are a priority, while service to the community is an important part of everyday life. This is how BL continues to focus its mission on the “Dominican Heritage of Scholarship and Service.”

What began in the early 1980s with only one bus, the Bishop Lynch transportation system has grown to a fleet of 13 buses traveling 11 routes throughout the Dallas area. The Bishop Lynch buses cruising around Dallas make it possible for over 250 students to call themselves Friars. Late buses are also offered during the school year to make it possible for these students to participate in activities, sports and organizations that meet after school.

5) FOUNDING FAMILIES

2) BISHOP JOSEPH PATRICK LYNCH The third Bishop of Dallas, Joseph Patrick Lynch served for 43 years – from 1911 to 1954, the longest term of any U.S. bishop. The Michigan native was ordained a priest in 1900 for the Dallas Diocese and was vicar general at the time of his predecessor’s death. Bishop Lynch’s reputation as a great orator was widespread, both in church and lay circles. Often called the “Lion of Texas,” he was much sought after as a speaker. Bishop Lynch was a progressive and dynamic force in Texas. During his lifetime, he helped to establish more than 150 churches and more than 200 religious and charitable institutions. Within a 40 year period, Bishop Lynch ordained more than 100 men to the priesthood. Bishop Joseph Lynch died on August 19, 1954 and is buried at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas.

In the late 1950s, a group of parents gathered to discuss the possibility of building a Catholic High School in East Dallas to serve the needs of students in parishes east of Central Expressway. Their discussions led them to the Diocese, where Bishop Thomas K. Gorman approved the building of Bishop Lynch High School. These “pioneering” families involved in the entire process – helping to secure financing, providing manual labor and even serving as staff members. These were large families, some with as many as ten children, all of whom would eventually attend BL. Those same families are still in many ways represented at BL today – through their children and grandchildren.

6) MSGR. THOMAS WEINZAPFEL Msgr. Weinzapfel played an integral role in the founding of Bishop Lynch High School; he was instrumental in inviting the priests from the Dominican order in Chicago to administer and teach in the boys division. His interest never waned as he served on the School Board up to the time of his retirement as pastor of St. Pius X Parish in 1996. It was he who initiated financial support for entering freshmen from the parish in 1990 – valuable assistance that continues to this day.

3) EAST DALLAS LOCATION Bishop Lynch High School is located on 22 acres at the corner of Ferguson Road and Peavy Road in the northern part of East Dallas. Nestled in the heart of the Casa View area, Bishop Lynch is surrounded by historic neighborhoods and distinguished landmarks. White Rock Lake, the Dallas Arboretum, and Flag Pole Hill are all well-known gathering spots for Dallas families. Swiss Avenue - the former home of Bishop Joseph P. Lynch and some of the wealthiest families in Dallas - is still the location of beautiful turn-of-the-century mansions with manicured lawns and wide shady drives. The homes along Forest Hills, Casa Linda and Claremont are some of the most sought-after real estate in the city. Country clubs and golf courses, like Lakewood, the Dallas Athletic Club and Tenison Park provide entertainment and retreat for families. Quaint neighborhood shops and historic centers, greenways and parks dot the area. Casa Linda Shopping Center – one of the oldest centers in the city – offers patrons shopping, eating and even exercise opportunities. The historic Lakewood Shopping Center features an active nightlife with outstanding dining and entertainment venues.

7) BOYS/GIRLS DIVISION Bishop Lynch High School was designed to be co-institutional with the girls’ division on Inadale Hall and the boys’ division on Ferguson Hall. The two divisions were connected by the science hallway and the administration hallway. Boys and girls used to meet secretly between classes in the science hallway (until the priests chased the girls away). This is why all of the men’s restrooms are located on one side of the building and all of the ladies’ restrooms on the other. In the fall of 1974, the school became co-educational with the boys and girls sharing classroom space. Even though the separation lasted only 11 years, the vast majority of alumni (and even many current students) still know the hallways as the “Boys Division” and the “Girls Division.”

FIFTY EXPERIENCES for FIFTY YEARS

8) FRESHMAN/SENIOR WEEK Instituted in the 1960s, Freshman/Senior Week served as a fun, light-hearted initiation into high school life. Each senior “adopted” a freshman and provided a week of lunches, treats and even costumes for their “little brothers and sisters.” The tradition continued for over 35 years until the mid-2000s, when the office of Student Life re-defined new programs for welcoming freshman and transfer students.

11) PARENT GROUPS From the very early days of the Mothers’ Club and Fathers’ Club, to the current Parents’ Association, Auction Committee, Dads’ Club, Friar Friends, Athletic and Choir Boosters, Bishop Lynch parents have always stepped up and joined. There are now parent organizations in place that support virtually every aspect of the school, giving truth to the claim that Bishop Lynch is truly a community of volunteers!

12) THE BISHOP LYNCH ANNUAL AUCTION 9) UNIFORMS One of the hallmarks of Catholic schools is the ever-present uniform. The initial uniform for the girls was designed by the Dominican Sisters, who had come from Wisconsin and were unfamiliar with the hot Texas sun. They decided on a wool plaid skirt with a wool jacket, to be worn with a white dress shirt. In the mid-70s styles changed, and the uniform changed with it. In the 80s another uniform change was made and the current skirt style was adopted. The boys’ original uniform was more relaxed – any solid color dress pants with a white shirt and tie. In the late 70s the look became even more relaxed and the boys began sporting wild print ties and slacks with shirts in a variety of colors. There was a uniform “crack-down” in the late 80s, and the boys’ uniform became what it is today – gray dress slacks with a white dress shirt and a BL tie. For a peek at the styles through the years, be sure to check out the class pictures hanging in the Sr. Dorice (Administration) Hallway. Although the students may complain, secretly they appreciate knowing what to wear every day!

It all started as a Carnival in the mid-70s. The Parents’ Association sponsored-event included dunk tanks, games and even a pancake breakfast! The highlight of the weekend was usually a raffle, with the winner receiving airline tickets and/or a hotel package. After several years, the Parents’ Association moved to a more comprehensive event – The Bishop Lynch Annual Auction. Since 1985, the Auction has been Bishop Lynch’s largest fundraising event and a unique separate committee has taken over the planning and implementation. Thanks to the exhaustive efforts of these very dedicated parent and alumni volunteers, BL supporters are invited to attend an enchanting evening of entertainment, delicious dining, and fabulous live and silent bidding. The Bishop Lynch Annual Auction is a major source of both fun and fundraising for our school. Proceeds from this remarkable event are used to provide scholarships to BL students via the Joseph P. Lynch Scholarship Fund.

13) GRANDPARENTS DAY What’s not to love about grandparents!? They are kind and caring. They are a wealth of information about our families and the world in general. They’ve often served in the military and fought for the freedoms we experience every day; they tend to spoil their grandchildren rotten. So of course they should be honored! Bishop Lynch High School’s first Grandparents Day was held on October 12, 2006, and has become a tradition that continues to grow each year. Currently held around Thanksgiving, Grandparents Day 2012 ushered in over 300 grandparents. They were on campus to celebrate Mass with the BL community and enjoy a nice lunch with their grandchildren. What a great way to involve them in the everyday-happenings of their grandkids!

10) BL VS JESUIT The storied Lynch-Jesuit rivalry has become the stuff of legends. Teams from the two largest Catholic schools in Dallas have been fighting it out on the gridiron since the late 1960s. The honor of being named No. 1 was passed back and forth over two decades. However, the Friars and Rangers did not face off after 1987 when heated emotions and district reassignments left the competition in a stand-still. On September 3, 2004 the historic Lynch-Jesuit rivalry was re-ignited at Roffino Stadium for the first time in 17 years. The battle continued for several more years until Jesuit was accepted into the UIL and the competition between the Friars and the Rangers came to an end in 2009.

14) ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Formed in 1978, the BL Alumni Association consists of over 9,000 members - anyone who has attended BL can be a member. Our alumni are a vital part of the Bishop Lynch community, participating annually in Career Day, Homecoming, Reunions, Happy Hours and sporting events. The organization is headed by a President and Advisory Board and meets several times each year to plan activities and to conduct fundraising efforts that benefit the BL community.

15) ALUMNI FACULTY AND STAFF Bishop Lynch is a family of people who care enough to come back to keep their family ties. From the first alumnus, Rick Boeglin ’66, who returned only three years after graduating to teach sophomore religion, to a total of 41 alumni faculty, coaches and staff members today, graduates have always been welcomed with open arms. FIFTY EXPERIENCES for FIFTY YEARS 16) ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR The Bishop Lynch Alumni Association recognized its first Alumnus of the Year in 1990 - David Roffino ’70. Since that first year, twenty-two alumni have been recognized for service to Bishop Lynch High School, service to the community, and success in his or her chosen field. These amazing individuals help make our school what it is today and demonstrate an outstanding example of BL graduates beyond the halls of their alma mater.

19) THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE Traditionally the Junior Student Council is responsible for running the Thanksgiving Food Drive, which is held the two weeks before Thanksgiving break. The success of the drive is dependent on the participation of the entire BL Community. In recent years, several truckloads of canned and boxed food items have filled the atrium. After the food drive ends, the food is taken to the Brady Center where it is distributed to families in need.

BE SURE TO JOIN US AT HOMECOMING THIS YEAR WHEN WE WILL HONOR OUR 2013 ALUMNI OF THE YEAR:

Wally Stock ’66, Andy Zihlman ’72 and Peggy Hoffman ’86

20) INVISIBLE CHILDREN 17) SERVICE One need only read the Mission Statement of Bishop Lynch High School to understand the importance of a strong sense of service. The priests and nuns who first taught at BL brought with them the “Dominican heritage of scholarship and service,” and that foundation of service is evident in the social outreach of the Bishop Lynch Community. While all students have a service component as part of their Theology classes, these hours represent only a portion of the social outreach conducted by the student body. During the 2012-2013 school year alone, nearly 34,000 service hours were documented and thousands of dollars raised to benefit a wide assortment of agencies and needs, including Habitat for Humanity, the North Texas Food Bank, Truett Elementary School, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society.

Many students feel passionately about the genocide going on in Africa; their passion led to the addition of the Invisible Children club in 2007. Invisible Children is a movement seeking to end the conflict in Uganda and stop the abduction of children for use as child soldiers. Through an organization known as the Schools for Schools Program, students are encouraged to creatively raise money for the schools of Northern Uganda. Bishop Lynch is a part of a cluster of schools raising funds for Pabbo Secondary School, and has in the past five years, raised nearly $50,000 for our sister school.

21) ALUMNI MASS OF REMEMBRANCE Homecoming weekend 2007 concluded with the first Sunday morning Mass of Remembrance, honoring all alumni who had passed away. This newest tradition continues to grow, with more family members and classmates participating each year. In an emotion-filled conclusion to the service, alumni representing various graduation years reverently honor those classmates who have passed away by reading their names aloud. As each name is read, a photo of the deceased is projected above the altar. An added component to the service is the placing of stones – each with the initials of a deceased alumnus – around the monument in the center courtyard of the school.

18) AMIGOS DE LA FINCA Since 2007, students and faculty from Bishop Lynch have joined with representatives from other area Catholic high schools to travel to Trujillo, Honduras, providing manual labor for construction and repair projects. In addition, the group provides educational and spiritual care for the community. Due to the unrest in Honduras in 2013, the mission group was sent to Nicaragua. The program, which is sponsored by the Diocese of Dallas, has become so popular that interested students must now apply for placement, as space is limited. However, support for the people of Trujillo continues throughout the year under the guidance of the club Amigos de la Finca, which raises funds for the Finca del Nino orphanage in Trujillo.

22) VETERANS DAY BREAKFAST Nearly twenty years ago, the Student Council began honoring our American heroes – those who have served as members of the armed forces. The Veterans Day Breakfast has now grown to include men and women currently serving, and “first responders” – police officers, fire fighters and EMTs. Besides offering our guests a delicious meal, the event includes patriotic performances by the Bishop Lynch Band and Choir, and a presentation by a guest speaker. The highlight of the event is always the playing of the military service hymns, when members of each branch of the service stand and salute.

FIFTY EXPERIENCES for FIFTY YEARS 23) THE MEMORIAL MONUMENT In 1996, the National Honor Society donated a monument to honor students, faculty and staff members who lost their lives during their time at BL. The monument was permanently installed in the inner courtyard and was dedicated during Homecoming 1996. The Memorial has become part of the Alumni Mass of Remembrance ceremony during Homecoming, when stones bearing the initials of deceased alumni are laid near the monument.

26) MOCK TRIAL

27) SPORTS HONOR ROLL

For nearly twenty years, the renowned Bishop Lynch Mock Trial Team has brought honor, prestige, and awards to Bishop Lynch. Founded in 1994 by Mr. David Post, the team advanced to the State level in its first year of existence, and has never looked back. In recent years, the team has traveled to New York by special invitation to participate in the Empire City National Mock Trial Tournament.

The Bishop Lynch Sports Honor Roll was established in 1988 in conjunction with the 25th Anniversary Celebration. The purpose of the Honor Roll is to recognize deserving individuals who have contributed to the athletic program at BL, and to stimulate continued interest in sports participation and activities. Nominations are accepted each year by the Athletic Department, which conducts voting among the current members of the Honor Roll. Announcement of the new inductees is made at Homecoming each year.

24) BLACKFRIARS On Tuesday, November 19, 1963, the first meeting of the Blackfriars Guild was held in the cafeteria. Father J.D. Reynolds, O.P. began the organization with a small group made up of seven students. Within a few years, the Blackfriars Guild (then under the direction of Fr. Shanahan) was producing two musicals each year. Nearly fifty years later, the organization has the distinction of being the oldest organization on campus. Only six people held the musical directing reins, including Brother Roger Shondel, Mrs. Maria Longoria Farrell ’76, Mr. Joe Heffernan and Mrs. Kit Hoolan Sawyer ’77. With the addition of the Catholic Foundation Performing Arts Center in 2003, the Blackfriars expanded their offering to include two stage plays each year under the direction of Mr. John Athas ’81.

28) CHOIR Since its humble beginnings as a Glee Club in the 1960s, the Bishop Lynch Choir has continually trained students to harness their vocal potential through song. Choir Director Kathy Leos has led the program for nearly thirty years, offering students opportunities in several choirs and ensembles as well as voice, piano and conductor studies. The choir sings at a variety of concerts, festivals, contests and liturgies throughout the school year. Their fame has grown in the past several years resulting in invitations to Diocesan events, grand openings and even trips overseas. They have traveled to New York City, Montreal, Ireland and twice to Rome! In 2013, the group was privileged to be in the Holy City when the announcement of the new Pope Francis was made.

The Blackfriars will soon launch its 100th production, the play The Mouse Trap in the Blackbox Theatre.

25) BRIGADE In 1965, Carolyn Teel assisted a few BL students in founding the Bishop Lynch Brigade. Since then, the Bishop Lynch Brigade has been a staple on Friday nights and throughout the year. With only three directors in its history (Carolyn Teel 1965-1992, Bunny Folsom Ridenour ’70 1992-1999 and Cari Schnurr 1999-present), the Brigade didn’t even change its uniform until 1996! Rich in both history and tradition, the award-winning Brigade continues to dazzle audiences in the Fall and Spring.

29) LADY FRIARS BASKETBALL What began as an intramural sport has blossomed into one of the winning-est programs in high school sports history. Under the direction of Coach Andy Zihlman ’72, the Lady Friars have amassed a staggering array of state and national titles. During the past 33 years Zihlman has celebrated his 800th career victory (2010), 12 consecutive State Championships and 21 championships in 25 years – a National Record.

34) SENIOR DINNER

Beginning in 1979, BL seniors have voted for classmates with the Best Personality, Best Hair, Typical Teen, Mr. & Mrs. BLHS and those Most Likely to Succeed. From funny to serious, from flattering to sarcastic, Senior Favorite awards are an honor bestowed on Seniors at the Senior Dinner held in May each year. These awards live on in perpetuity in the yearbook.

31) TALENT SHOWS For over thirty years the talents of BL students were showcased in an annual event sponsored by the Student Council. Singers, dancers, pianists and comedians would share their talents with the Bishop Lynch community. In 2000, the senior class decided to add a Battle of the Bands to the calendar. Area private high schools were invited to submit entries, and a local radio station supplied the judges. A few years later, the enterprising senior class created a new competition – the Mr. BLHS Pageant. This event serves to uncover the many unusual, yet endearing talents of the entrants. Though the years, students have also held Coffee Houses (venues for performing in front of smaller crowds in a more intimate setting), Karaoke Nights and even piano recitals – all in an effort to showcase the many talents of BL students.

33) SENIOR RETREAT While each class retreat is unique in its own way, the senior retreat is a true rite of passage. In the two-day camp, seniors listen to their peers and teachers speak about different subjects on their life’s journey. This new insight brings perhaps a new appreciation as well. The annual retreat serves the important purpose of not only bringing together the class, but also finding some adult introspection about the changes in the near future in the lives of the seniors.

As the senior students say goodbye to their second home for the past four years, the Bishop Lynch Parents’ Association provides an opportunity for them to gather one last time and share a meal. The atmosphere is different for the seniors, as they experience a sense of relief and joy. Following the dinner, members of the faculty/staff provide entertainment. What goes on onstage cannot be explained – only experienced.

35) TACO TUESDAY No one can pinpoint just when Taco Tuesday became Taco Tuesday, but it’s amazing! Tacos. On Tuesday! It’s a Bishop Lynch tradition that just can’t be beat. It’s also a tradition carried on after graduation. Each year in January when students are traditionally still home for Christmas break, young alumni are invited back to visit campus and re-live one of the most popular cafeteria days and catch up with old friends, faculty and staff!

32) BL AMBASSADORS The BL Ambassadors promote unity, caring, school heritage and a sense of belonging for all members of the Bishop Lynch community. This group of students represents the school and assists prospective students and their families who are thinking of becoming a part of the Bishop Lynch community. Each year the BL Ambassadors kick the year off with the Freshman Camp. This is a day that gives all the incoming freshmen students a taste of what life at BL is like. Each year this club is active in many events around the school including the freshman camp, eighth grade testing, the Special Olympics, and BL’s first ever Jingle Bell Rock Concert.

36) STUDENT COMMUNICATIONS It all started with The Byline’s first edition in November 1965. Although the publication has changed names a few times - The Byline, Friar Crier, The Perspective, The Ledger - it has always been student-written and distributed. Shortly after the beginning of the new millennium, several students approached the administration with the possibility of starting a daily televised news program. “BL LIVE,” under the guidance of Ms. Michele Longoria ’83, has been going strong ever since. The program features campus news and announcements, interviews on current events and even announces the daily lunch menu!

37) FRIAR WEEK Instituted by the Student Council, Friar Week is used to get the student-body pumped up for the football season. Each day is assigned a specific theme: Mighty Monday, Trendy Tuesday, Wacky Wednesday, for example. The week features various costumes, events and a pep rally. While originally intended as a prelude to the Jesuit game, Friar Week now serves to garner excitement and support for the BL Friars as they begin their season.

38) MAGAZINE DRIVE For nearly thirty years, as the new school year opened, students and faculty began anticipating the annual Magazine Drive, one of Bishop Lynch’s most profitable fundraisers. Founded by Ms. Jenny Carroll, the drive originally benefited the library; eventually the purpose changed and the money was redirected to fund clubs and organizations. Students showed off their creative side by decorating their homeroom doors. Those who sold magazines were rewarded with trinkets, dress-down passes, candy and even cash! These incentives really got the students pumped up to sell.

39) JUNIOR RING CEREMONY As the school year comes to an end, the juniors are getting ready to embark on their final year of high school. They have been anticipating this moment for a long time. The Junior Ring Ceremony is a time honored tradition at Bishop Lynch. Simply put, it is a blessing of class rings before they are presented to the juniors. It’s the symbolism behind the ring and ceremony that makes this day so highly anticipated. The ceremony brings the junior class together before family and the BL community to celebrate their transition into their senior year. Here, the juniors are officially recognized as the new leaders of the student body and charged with being positive influences on the underclassmen.

FIFTY EXPERIENCES for FIFTY YEARS

40) MULTI-CULTURAL WEEK There is no doubt that an immense amount of diversity exists at Bishop Lynch, among races, cultures and even religions. No matter the differences, students and faculty alike embrace the variety and have dedicated a specific week to celebrating it. Originated in the late 1980s, Multicultural Week includes various menu options and entertainment representing cultures from all across the globe.

41) CAMPUS EXPANSION & IMPROVEMENT The current construction of the new Student Complex for Arts & Athletics and future projects of the Veritas... from Generation to Generation Campaign are reminders that improvement of the BL campus has been a priority to each generation. The 1966 campus consisted of a square of classrooms and offices around a central courtyard, a gym with a combination stage/cafeteria “Cafetorium” and residences for the founding Dominican faculty members. Since that original design, the campus has been through many transformations including: the George McIngvale Sr. Baseball Field, Roffino Stadium and several Fieldhouse incarnations; the Atrium/front entrance and the Catholic Foundation Center for Performing Arts; Heritage Hall classrooms, Memorial Courtyard landscaping, and BL Bistro cafeteria redesign; the Ed Haggar Athletic Complex and Turf & Track resurfacing; and the Sister Cecelia Sehr Science Pavilion. Through the outstanding support of the BL community, these upgraded/student-centered spaces allow generations to gather, learn and grow together.

43) ROFFINO STADIUM Roffino Stadium has been the home of the Friars for more than 45 years. With a capacity of 2,500, Roffino Stadium has seen many brilliant athletes and witnessed hundreds of memorable games. Built by eager and handy parents, Roffino Stadium officially opened in 1968, and included a field house and track. In 1994, the track was resurfaced and dedicated to the memory of former coach Brent Thorne. In 1998, a new field house was added, providing locker room space for Varsity and JV football as well as girls sports. In January 2006, Bishop Lynch formally opened the 9,000 square foot Ed Haggar Athletic Complex on the footprint of the original field house. The Haggar Complex is home to BL’s nationally ranked Wrestling program and houses a spectacular weight room. Finally, in the spring of 2010, a new synthetic turf competition surface and a new track replaced the original grass field, bringing Roffino Stadium up to that “next level.”

44) DUAL ENROLLMENT The Dual Enrollment Program, which began in the early 1990s, is the largest in the state, offering more than 50 courses a year including English, math, history, science and the arts. The classes are taught by more than 20 Bishop Lynch faculty members who have met the requirements for employment as adjunct professors set by Eastfield College. Eligibility for admission into the program starts as early as freshman year to students who pass the Dallas County Community College entrance exam or are exempt by their SAT/ACT scores. Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA to be enrolled in the program. All Dual Enrollment college credit is free to all BL Friars.

45) BL LOGO

42) OPERATION ODDBALL This Halloween tradition has proven to be a vital fundraiser for the senior class. Students and faculty are encouraged to buy a “pass” allowing them to dress in costume for the day. In the spirit of good sportsmanship, the participants are judged at each lunch and the best costume is voted on by applause from the crowd.

One of the ever-present symbols of Bishop Lynch High School is the shield. It not only represents the student-body, but also the heritage of the school and what it stands for. The original Dominican shield is black and white and shaped to be reminiscent of a Friar's robes - a white tunic and scapular with a large black hood and robe. Dominican organizations often customize the basic shield to represent their organization. In the case of Bishop Lynch High School, the letters “BL” are inserted inside the shield. The Bishop Lynch High School logo can be found on clothing, coffee mugs, banners and plaques. It is seen on the back windows of cars all over the Dallas area and beyond.

46) HOMECOMING On November 11, 1966, the BL Friars and the Jesuit Rangers paired off in a football game to celebrate Lynch’s first Homecoming. Fans turned out in record numbers to see the game that promised to be full of excitement. They got their money’s worth! The Friars dominated the game, much to the delight of hundreds of loyal fans. The following evening, the BL alumni were welcomed back by the students for the first Homecoming Dance held in the cafeteria. The highlight was, of course, the crowning of the first Homecoming Queen, Sue Westbrook ’67. Each year since then, students get in the spirit of Homecoming with contests, Black & White days and pep rallies. There have been parades and pyramids, liturgies and lunches. For 46 years, Bishop Lynch has welcomed back alumni to help celebrate Homecoming – although the alumni now have their OWN party! Each year following the game, the Alumni Association sponsors an event just for alumni, including “A Taste of Lynch” food sampling and a live band. The popularity of the party has grown each year and attendance now tops 1,200 and more!

FIFTY EXPERIENCES for FIFTY YEARS

47) REFLECTIONS The year was 1978. A small group of alumni, under the guidance of Sr. Dorice, began the organization we know of today as the BL Alumni Association. One of their initial directives was to create a publication for alumni, about alumni. Thus Reflections was born. As the school grew, so did the publication – from a small piece printed on newsprint, to the magazine format of today. Reflections now includes not only news of alumni, but stories about what is going on at BL today. The magazine is mailed to over 12,000 homes, including alumni, their parents, and current students. It is not only the premier publication of the school, but a valuable resource for those who want to keep up with the growth of their alma mater.

49) ED LEYDEN In 1982 Edward E. Leyden became the first lay principal of Bishop Lynch High School, and in 1998 he was named President. For over 30 years, Mr. Leyden has led the school – through times of economic hardship and decreasing enrollment, and years of prosperity and rising student numbers. A native of California, Leyden graduated cum laude from St. Edward’s University in Austin and earned an MS from Barry University. He is a member of the Board of Consultants for the University of Dallas and St. Edward’s Board of Trustees and is also a Secondary Schools Board Member for the National Catholic Education Association. In 1993, Leyden received the Distinguished Principal Award for the Diocese of Dallas. As a result of Bishop Lynch High School being named a National Recognized School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education in 1991 and again in 1998, Ed Leyden received recognition by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Mr. Leyden and wife Barbara are parents to three BL alumns: Jason ’89, Eamon ’96 and Gregory ’97.

Be sure to add this year’s Homecoming to your calendar - FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2013

50) THE NEXT 50 YEARS 48) THE FRIAR Although there are been any number of incarnations, the Friar has always been, and continues to be, the mascot of Bishop Lynch High School. There have been jovial Friars, serious Friars, paper mache Friars, and superhero Friars. There are several schools in the United States that utilize the Friar as their mascot, including Providence College in Rhode Island, the University of Pennsylvania and our “founding school” Fenwick High School. With the planning of the 50th Anniversary underway, the decision was made to update the look of the BL Friar, giving him a more modern look.

50 YEARS IS A TIME FOR REFLECTION AND CELEBRATION, AN OPPORTUNITY TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF OUR SCHOOL AND PERPETUATE ITS TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE! Bishop Lynch High School has been, and will continue to be a great community, one of unparalleled support and empowerment for the students that course through its halls each day. Bishop Lynch prides itself in our unique ability to develop the whole-student under the guidance of the Dominican heritage of scholarship and service, all on a campus initially bookended by dormitories for nuns and priests amidst the athletic fields and science classrooms. Although the grounds have transformed by the times – a true reflection of progress, we remain forever faithful to the Tradition that binds us all as Friars. Wherever you find new, there is old; wherever you find excellence, truth is not far behind. You will see students on their path to work for justice in the world, following all those graduates who found that being a Friar pales in comparison to the experience of becoming a Friar.

Here’s to the next 50 years! 32

She started her career at Bank of America's New York corporate office in 1979 after obtaining her MBA in finance from the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania. She completed her undergraduate studies at Tulane and Boston Universities. Barbara obtained not only her MBA from Wharton, but also her MME (Madame in French), as she met her husband Pierre the first day of class. After five years, he convinced Barbara that life in France may be better than life in NY and in 1982 she transferred to an affiliate of BofA in Paris. They have two lovely children, Sarah and Jeremy, who are now 28 and 27 years old, both working, one in London and the other in Paris. The above photo of Barbara was taken by her daughter Sarah in a pub in London, where they were celebrating her retirement in February 2013. Her high school years had a huge influence on her life and career choices, especially the study of languages. Her first French teacher, Clarice Peninger, had a special knack for imparting the love of language and literature. Due to Ms. Peninger’s inspiration, Barbara majored in French and joined the Peace Corps where she was sent to Morocco (a French speaking 34

country in North Africa). Another major BL influence was her physics teacher, Father Determan. Because phyics was taught in the Boys’ Division there were only a few girls enrolled in that course. Fourth year Mathematics was not available to the Girls‘ Division. She is happy the segregation of the girl and boy students has now ended and the girls have an equal opportunity in all course offerings! Barbara stays in touch on a regular basis with several of her classmates from the Class of 1968 and attended their 40th reunion in 2008. She hopes to be able to attend her next class reunion to say, once again, “Thank you, Bishop Lynch High School.” After 40 years of teaching middle school English, Karen Hantz Sanders ’68 recently retired. Karen began her teaching career in Port Arthur, TX and taught for the last 36 years in the Irving ISD. Karen and her husband Ronny live in Euless and are members of Holy Family of Nazareth Catholic Church in Irving. They are the parents of Lisa, Stephen and Sarah and have two grandchildren. Congratulations to fabric artist Jill Luigs ’74 who displayed her colorful works from June 1 to July 6 at New York’s Oswego State Downtown in “At Last,” an exhibition with autobiographical meaning. The title of Luigs’ exhibition represents finally uniting with someone; in her case, she met a high school classmate, Dan Leo ’70, 36 years after their graduation!

ALUMNI CLASS NOTES Bill Button ’75 attended Bishop Lynch for two years, 1969-71, as a freshman and sophomore. At that time, he was an Episcopalian. At the Alumni Night at the Blackfriars Show, Laszlo Laky ’77 and his fiance Lynette Turner had an exciting reunion with Mrs. Terri Lorentz, Laszlo’s English teacher. It was delightful to see Mrs. Lorentz, who inspired him to write and do it C O R R E C T L Y and with great description!!! That skill has served Laszlo well over the years in writing investigative reports, crime scene reports and patient reports as a firefighter/paramedic where narration is crucial. Thank you to Mrs. Lorentz for making a difference to thousands of young minds! Daniel Croll ’78 and Judy Svrcek Croll ’78 traveled with their daughter, Katelyn, Class of 2015, a member of the Bishop Lynch A Cappella Choir, to Rome during the 2013 Spring Break.
