2013-2014

From The

Office of the President September 2013 Dear Friar Fans, Welcome to Bishop Lynch High School athletics and the celebration of our 50th Anniversary. During this year the BL Community will take advantage of every opportunity to recognize and celebrate those special people, accomplishments and events that have made our school an outstanding example of Catholic education in East Dallas and beyond. With construction underway on the 48,000+ square foot Student Complex for Arts & Athletics, the school enters its 50th year with confidence and justifiable pride. This project is made possible by the generous contributions of scores of alumni, parents and community members. By Summer 2014 our athletes and fans will enjoy a new 1,500-seat Performance Gym, with centralized ticketing and restrooms, varsity locker rooms, new weight room and additional coaches’ offices. The next generation of BL students will also benefit from state-of-the-art facilities for band, dance and visual arts. On behalf of our talented students, and the gifted faculty and coaches who lead them, I thank everyone who is involved in making this long-needed project a reality. Athletically, 2013-2014 is also a uniquely exciting year as we host the Fenwick Friars from Chicago for a 50th Anniversary football game. Members of the Order of Preachers—Dominican Sisters and Friars—served as our pioneer leaders, and many founding faculty members came directly from Fenwick High School to open BL in 1963. It is an honor for us to offer hospitality and athletic competition to our “fellow Friars,” and our BL football team looks forward to visiting Chicago in 2014 for the return match. I continue to be made proud by the superior BL athletic programs and our coaches and student athletes, who demonstrate the “pursuit of excellence” whether in practice or game time, home or away… Throughout the 2013-2014 year I urge everyone to support our teams in a spirit of friendly competition and Christian fellowship—hallmarks of the tradition handed down to us over the last 50 years. I look forward to seeing you at the games! GO FRIARS! Sincerely,

Edward E. Leyden

Dallas

EAST DALLAS Bishop Lynch High School is located on 22 acres at the corner of Ferguson Road and Peavy Road in the northern part of East Dallas. Nestled in the heart of the Casa View area, Bishop Lynch is surrounded by historic neighborhoods and distinguished landmarks.

White Rock White Rock Lake, the largest body of water within Dallas city limits, is located only four miles from the Bishop Lynch campus. The picturesque park surrounding the lake is home to jogging and bicycle trails, impressive homes and a variety of wildlife. One of the main draws is the White Rock Spillway on Garland Road. Located on the east side of the lake is Flag Pole Hill, a gathering place for the young and the young-at-heart for several generations. Families picnic, school children play and young lovers stroll the expanse of beautiful lawn surrounding the hill. Just north of the lake is the Dallas Arboretum, home of the DeGolyer Estate. The Arboretum provides a tranquil setting for many of the city’s weddings and those families who are looking for a beautiful backdrop for family portraits.

2013-2014

Casa Linda Casa Linda Shopping Center, one of the oldest centers in the city, is alive and well, offering partons shopping, eating and even exerciase opportunities. The homes along Forest Hills, Casa Linda and Claremont are some of the most attractive real estate in the city for families large and small. Quaint neighborhood shops and historic centers, greenways and parks dot the area.

Lakewood The neighborhoods of historic Dallas are located within a five-mile radius of Bishop Lynch. Swiss Avenue, the original home to some of the wealthiest families in the area, is still the location of beautiful turn-of-the-century mansions with manicured lawns and wide shady drives. Historic Lakewood Shopping Center features night life with dining and entertainment venues, including Matt’s Ranchero Martinez (Matt Martinez ’93). The Lakewood Country Club, The Dallas Athletic Club and Tennyson Park provide entertainment and retreat for many Bishop Lynch families. Nestled somewhere between old-Dallas history and modern day convenience, East Dallas is the perfect mixture of luxury and practicality.

Bishop Lynch

In the early ‘60s, on the far eastern side of Dallas, a few enterprising parish pastors and parents founded a high school intended to serve a wide diversity of children-budding scholars, talented athletes and brilliant thespians. All who sought truth and knowledge were welcomed.

The Bishop Lynch main school building consists of four main hallways surrounding an inner courtyard, the gymnasium, The Catholic Foundation Performing Arts Center and the newly opened Sister Cecila Sehr Science Pavilion.

From this early vision has grown a truly outstanding Catholic educational institution. Twice awarded the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon Award of Excellence, Bishop Lynch High School is the standard of Catholic School education in Texas. Serving the youth in Dallas and its surrounding communities, Bishop Lynch continues to lead the way in providing a unparalleled experience to a high school student.

Chapel/Atrium One of the outstanding features of Bishop Lynch is the atrium area located at the front of the school. A popular gathering spot for students, the space is also used for receptions, dinners and even dances. The St. Catherine of Siena Chapel, is located in the center of the campus, provides seating for up to seventy students and is used for the celebration of Mass, prayer services and other religious gatherings and ceremonies.

2013-2014

Theatre McGonigle Theatre is home to Bishop Lynch’s exceptional performing arts program. With a seating capacity of 380, the theatre is an intimate, stylish space for all types of presentations. With its production quality audio visual equipment and theater style backstage area, the state-of – the-art facility has been heralded as the premier performance venue in East Dallas.

Science Wing The Sister Cecilia Sehr, O.P. Science Pavilion is located on the south end of campus and adds 8,680 square feet to the campus. The building includes three science classrooms with separate lab and lecture space, meeting and workroom areas for faculty, and additional storage. The Sister Cecilia Sehr, O.P. Science Pavilion also contains offices for the campus ministry and school chaplain, connecting our most modern facility to the fabric of our mission since Bishop Lynch opened in 1963.

Roffino Stadium Roffino Stadium has been the home of Friars for more than 45 years. With a capacity of 2,500, Roffino Stadium has seen many brilliant athletes and witnessed hundreds of memorable games. The athletic complex includes an area for track and field events, is dedicated to the memory of former coach Brent Thorne. Adjacent to the track is McIngvale Field, home of the Friars Baseball team. The Lady Friars Softball team plays their home games on the softball field at the opposite end of campus.

Ed Haggar Complex In January 2006, Bishop Lynch formally opened the first phase of a multi-year endeavor to improve the athletic facilities on campus. The 9,000 square foot Ed Haggar Athletic Complex is featured at the south end of Roffino Stadium and is one of the premier high school athletic facilities in Dallas. The Ed Haggar Athletic Complex is home to Bishop Lynch’s nationally ranked Wrestling program and exhibits the most spectacular weight room in TAPPS. Additionally, the complex houses concession stands and restroom facilities.

2013-2014

The BL Gymnasium For decades, the Bishop Lynch gymnasium has been the home of championships. The gym has seen numerous state titles from volleyball, men’s basketball and has been dominated by the rise of the Lady Friar’s women’s basketball team to national prominence with a record 27 Texas state championships. The gym also serves as the venue for school Masses and is the hub of student activities throughout the year. In the summer of 2012, the existing gym locker rooms were demolished and renovated to service our growing population of students. This project created new locker rooms for Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball, Men’s Soccer, Freshman Baseball, Physical Education Classes and Brigade. It also added space for two coaches’ offices, additional gym storage, and a training/laundry facility.

2013-2014

Athletic Director Dear Friar Friends, Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year and another exciting athletic season This year promises to be an exciting year as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of this great institution! As Bishop Lynch celebrates its 50th Anniversary, the calendar will be full of events for alumni, current students and families, past supporters and friends of the school. Leading off the year will be Bishop Lynch’s annual golf tournament, held this year at Dallas Athletic Club. On Monday, September 9, 2013, Bishop Lynch will hold a fundraiser unlike any other in its history. While golf will be a large part of our celebration, it will not be the only thing on the agenda for that day! In conjunction with our 50th Anniversary, we are unveiling a new model for fundraising for Athletics. It was very encouraging to see the progress made on our new Student Complex for Arts and Athletics over the summer. The facility, which is expected to be completed by Summer 2014, will include a 1,500 seat full Performance Gymnasium, Gym Lobby with Central Ticketing, Concessions and Restrooms, Band Hall, Dance Studio, Weight Room, Varsity Locker Rooms and more. This year looks to be a great year for our athletic teams. Volleyball and Women’s Track won State Championships last year and are ready to challenge for another. All of our athletes worked hard over the summer and are eager to begin competing. We encourage you to support our athletic program by joining our Athletic Booster Club. Meetings are held on the first Monday of the month at 7:00 pm in the cafeteria. The Bishop Lynch Athletic Booster Club (“ABC”) is dedicated to sponsoring fundraising activities for the financial support of all interscholastic athletic programs which are approved and supported by the administration of Bishop Lynch High School. Membership is open to all parents, guardians, alumni, and individuals interested in the athletic advancement and PRIDE of Bishop Lynch High School. We thank you for your unending support and wonderful school spirit which makes Bishop Lynch an unparalleled success among other schools in Texas. We also welcome our guests from around the state to our campus, especially to the Fenwick Friars from Chicago. We expect that all games display great sportsmanship and we pray that all the athletes may compete free of injury. Good luck to all teams and thanks for playing a part in the lives of our athletes and the traditions of Bishop Lynch High School. Sincerely,

Andy Zihlman ’72 Athletic Director

2013-2014

On Saturday, June 8th, we initiated construction on the new Student Complex for Arts & Athletics with a unique Demolition Celebration event. At the celebration Bishop Kevin Farrell, City Councilman Sheffie Kadane and Campaign Chairs Richard and Adelle Toussaint shared their enthusiasm for the new construction and pride in BL’s outstanding example as a community that continues to step forward in excellence. With more than 250 people in attendance, the event was a fantastic testament to the leadership support and dedication to BL.

You may have seen additional publicity about the school’s innovative partnerships with the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas Contemporary’s Art ink Program, which provided SWAT team training for school safety and developed a graffiti mural project about school pride. We were proud to have the opportunity to use our facilities for service to others and to promote visibility in our local neighborhood.

NEXT GENERATION PRIORITIES The Student Complex is targeted to open before Fall 2014. Our Veritas… from Generation to Generation initiative continues with additional construction phases in the next years – new and renovated classrooms, redesigned library/learning center spaces, consolidated Administrative office space, and BL’s first Alumni Center!

2013-2014

2013 - 2014 Football Media Guide September 2013 Thank you for purchasing this copy of the 2013-2014 Bishop Lynch Football Media Guide! This fifth edition of the Bishop Lynch Media Guide is the continuation of our multi-year endeavor to rediscover the missing pieces of our athletic history in the hopes of having a thorough history of Bishop Lynch Athletics this year - 2013 - in time for our 50th Anniversary. With such a rich athletic history, Bishop Lynch was in need of a central source for sports information—an almanac to catalogue all of the accomplishments of our student-athletes, the records they set, state championships teams and national record holders. As always, we continue to profile our seniors in their respective sports and will give you an inside look into Bishop Lynch Athletics like you have never seen before. We are using this publication as a history of our athletic programs, from the inception of our school in 1963 to the next state champion who has yet to be crowned. As we indicated a few years back, we know that the Media Guide is incomplete and that we are missing some information on your favorite memories from our athletic past. As we began this project almost five years ago, we noticed that there were significant gaps in the history of our school and that many of our proudest moments have been passed down through word of mouth instead of in newspaper articles. For this reason, we ask for your help. If you know of a piece of information that we unintentionally omitted from the Media Guide, we would like to know about it. We will be making regular updates and publishing new editions each year. Further, if you notice that an athlete’s name is misspelled or misrepresented, if we have a date wrong or if we forgot something that is truly significant in the landscape of our great school, please let us know. As you thumb through this book please pay special attention to the sports action photos, many of which were provided by Brandon Wade Photography, Wes Duke with Impressionist, as well as Bishop Lynch past-parents Andy & Parris Reine and Sharon Plugge. Finally, a SPECIAL THANK YOU to, our Media Guide Chair Heather Smith! You came in during a crazy year and did a tremendous job - thank you! Our hope is to provide Bishop Lynch with a thorough historical record of one of the proudest, most successful athletic programs in the state of Texas. We hope you enjoy this edition and each one thereafter. As always, thank you for your support of Bishop Lynch Athletics! GO FRIARS! Ben Dasch ’95 Assistant Athletic Director—Athletic Operations

Years at Bishop Lynch: 18 years High School Attended: Lake Highlands High School College Attended: University of Oklahoma; Sam Houston State Unviersity What’s one word to describe the Bishop Lynch Friar? Loyal What sitcom cast (past or present) would you most want to be a member of? Happy Days – the Fonze was COOL!! Which one of Snow White’s 7 dwarfs describes you best? Doc What was your all-time favorite Halloween costume? Noah’s Ark – with a group of friends What is the first thing you think of when your alarm clock goes off in the morning? Where’s the Snooze button? What is your favorite high school memory? Drill Team of course! What does it mean to you to be a coach during Bishop Lynch’s 50th Anniversary? I’m proud to be a part of this Historical Event in BL’s timeline of great accomplishments. Cari is beginning her 19th year at Bishop Lynch, and her 16th with the Brigade. She is the Blackbaud Systems Specialist, and teaches AP Psychology and is now a member of the iTeam (Instructional Technology). Handsome What sitcom cast (past or present) would you most want to be a member of? Friends!!! Which one of Snow White’s 7 dwarfs describes you best? Performing at Halftime during Football games What does it mean to you to be a coach during Bishop Lynch’s 50th Anniversary? I think it’s amazing to see the great changes the school has made in the last 50 years. Even more so, it’s awesome to be a part of and experience the current and future plans that are in the works. Our school is so great and our sports programs are bursting at the seams that these changes couldn’t have come at a better time. I can’t wait to see the students reactions to all the cool things that are being planned for THEM. Being a coach during all of this is a tremendous honor and as an alum- I’m a little jealous! Allison Elliott has been dancing for 24 years studying ballet, jazz, modern, hip hop, lyrical, contemporary and pointe, while also competing with award winning jazz and pointe companies at Rowlett Dance Academy. Allison was a student at Bishop Lynch and is a proud member of the 2001 graduating class. During her time at BL, she was a line member on the BL Brigade for 2 years and acted as a Lieutenant her senior year. She went on to Kilgore College where she graduated with an Associate of Arts degree majoring in Dance and continued on to the University of North Texas where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies. Ms. Elliott has been the Brigade Assistant Director for 8 years and was the director of the Silver Cadettes for 6 years. Allison is currently in her tenth year at BL teaching dance classes and has been serving as the Head Coach and Choreographer of Brigade for four years. She has choreographed for the Harmony Show Choir, organizes pep rallies and is the club moderator of the Friar Fanatics. Four years ago she was honored with the Athletic Special Assistant Award.
