Lancer Alumni Committee

We are truly grateful to these men who are vital in keeping the Lancer torch lit. The great St. Augustine tradition is alive and well today in the Loughlin students who receive an Augustine scholarship.

Named Scholarship Funds

The most vital connection between St. Augustine High School and Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in 2024 is through scholarship support. We are grateful to those who have established a named fund (listed below).

Of course, all gifts made by Lancers are directed to scholarships through the Ray Brustman Scholarship Fund and the Frank Macchiarola Scholarship Fund. The first fund created was in honor of Ray Brustman and a little background is provided below.

The Ray Brustman Scholarship Fund

The James ‘53 and Mary Ann Dowdall Scholarship Fund

The William J. Horn ‘60 Scholarship Fund

The Frank J. Macchiarola, Ph.D. ‘58 Scholarship Fund

The Anthony & Linda Scotto Scholarship Fund

The Ed Smith Class of 1962 Scholarship Fund

The Thomas ‘70 and Roberta Van Buskirk Scholarship Fund

The James I. Konkel ‘54 Scholarship Fund

Ray Brustman Scholarship

Raymond Brustman's entire teaching career was spent at St. Augustine's—forty-two and a half years, from 1927 to the closing of the school in 1969. He epitomized the spirit of Christian community and humanistic pursuit so thoroughly that his image and that of the school merge inextricably; he was St. Augustine's. While he taught a variety of subjects, Latin was his passion.

Alumni from different decades are quick to concur that Mr. Brustman was the walking exemplar of everything that was warm and wonderful about their high school experience; he was their academic mentor, par excellence, but most importantly, through his personal interest and care, their counselor, their friend, their “Mister Chips.”
