BISHOP LOUGHLIN UNVEILS A BRAND NEW BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE LAB EQUIPPED WITH CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY For several years, Loughlin has boasted one of the best Biomedical Science programs in the area featuring the renowned PLTW (Project Lead The Way) curriculum. Building on this strength, we now have a new Biomedical Science lab (January 2022), equipped with a cutting-edge Anatomage Interactive 3D Anatomy and Physiology Virtual Dissection Table.

The new Anatomage Table 8, the most technologically advanced 3D anatomy visualization and virtual dissection tool, provides students with the chance to perform virtual 3D dissections of the human body by “visualizing anatomy exactly as they would on a cadaver. Anatomy is presented as a fully interactive, life-sized touch screen experience and allows for exploration and learning of­human­anatomy­beyond­what­any­cadaver­could­off­er.”

(Anatomage, Inc.) Beyond dissection, the Anatomage Table supports exploration and learning of human anatomy. With a computerized screen large enough to show a life-size human body, students can 8

visualize, analyze, interact, and even diagnose with simulated living anatomy and physiology on digital bodies kinesiology (body movement) simulation, micro structures of the brain, ocular motor control, and other vital functions of the body (cardiac, blood circulation, etc.) with the table’s vast clinical case library.

The students will engage in a virtual medical lab, as they learn to analyze a patient’s needs and perform the proper scans to make a diagnosis or learn how to perform a virtual cadaver dissection to determine a patient’s cause of death.

The table allows students to do things that would be impossible in a typical lab class. They can start over, save changes, and easily see a body or organ from any angle by manipulating the image.

The Anatomage system will complement and advance the school’s current science curricula in many ways and provide our students with an advanced tool to better understand the science behind the human body.

In October the school announced a new look for Leo the Lion! Created by VIP Branding Powered by Varsity Brands, the logo­is­designed­to­refl­ect­the­school’s­all-around­standard­of­excellence­in­academics,­athletics,­and­all­other­valued­ programs. It will also serve to reinforce the core essence of our school pride, accomplishment, and spirit. We hope you enjoy our new updated look.

In 1947, James Sutton ‘48 won the contest to name a mascot for Loughlin. He called the furious, school-spirited animal Leo the Lion. There were 300 entries in the contest. Sutton’s entry was in memory of Br. Charisus Leo, FSC. Brother Leo, who was the Athletic Director at Loughlin from 1933 to 1947, passed away just before the contest started. Brother Leo was noted for his courage and was described as a lion-hearted man at his funeral.

HONORING JOHN KLEMM ’65 AND CREATING THE JOHN E. KLEMM ‘65 SCHOLARSHIP FUND

We were proud to honor a Loughlin legend, John Klemm ’65, at an event at Giando on the Water in September. The event was both a retirement party and a scholarship fundraiser. We are very pleased to announce a success which raised more than $100,000 to establish the John E. Klemm ’65 Scholarship Fund.

Loughlin Family (in 2000 formed the Lancer Alumni and in 2004 the McDonnell Alumnae Associations), established and directed many alumni reunions and other events, initiated Loughlin’s­fi­rst­capital­campaign­in­2001­raising­more­than­six­ million dollars, and, led Loughlin’s 150th Anniversary Gala.

Mr. Klemm was the founding Director of Development for Loughlin and has left a distinguished legacy at his alma mater.

John­(or­“Jed”­to­many­of­his­friends)­cultivated­the­thousands­ of relationships that help make up our alumni base of support today. He poured his heart and soul into establishing this vital base and without this support from all three schools, it is diffi ­­cult­to­imagine­that­we­would­be­in­the­excellent­position­ we are in today.

Among his many achievements, John raised millions of dollars to support scholarships and aid for Loughlin students, founded the Lion-Lancer Golf Tourney in 1997 (along with Bro. James Bonilla and Kevin Gallagher ‘66), created the Clermont magazine to help keep alumni connected, brought both St. Augustine Lancers and Bishop McDonnell alumnae into the

THE CLASS OF 2021 HIGHLIGHTING AN EXCITING END TO A CHALLENGING YEAR

Our­169th­commencement­took­place­June­5­—­the­second­year­ in a row in the school yard.

Although every one of our 169 graduating classes is unique and special, the Class of 2021 will go down in history as one of the most remarkable. The resiliency they displayed, for the past two academic years, was truly extraordinary. Their senior year started with questions like “how can the school community stay safe when the hospital down the­block­is­overrun­with­very­sick­COVID­ patients? How can my two sisters and I take classes online at the same time with one laptop?”­Other­seniors­asked,­“how­can­ I take my music class online and will they­require­the­SAT­this­year?”­or,­ “how can I make a college decision without­seeing­the­campus?”­ There were many, many other questions and uncertainties.

One at a time, we worked on solutions to these questions together: the PTA/families, students, guidance counselors, deans, faculty, and staff­.­The­way­a­ family would. And, it worked!

A special congratulations to our Valedictorian,­Hanny­ Echeverria-Navarro and Salutatorian, Skylar Grady, who delivered powerful speeches during the graduation ceremony.

A SCHOLARSHIP GROWS IN BROOKLYN

For the third time since 2018, a Loughlin graduate will attend Providence College in Rhode Island on a four-year full scholarship established by Ronald ‘58 and Janet Stride.

The Class of 2021’s recipient of the Stride Family Scholarship Fund is Ronan McGouran ‘21. Ronan was on the varsity basketball team, a member of the National Honor Society, and became a student ambassador during his senior year.

In­2018,­Linda­Ineus­was­the­fi­rst­ recipient of the scholarship. She is studying Biology and preparing for­a­career­in­Veterinary­Science.­ In 2020 Anastasia Hussett, who is studying Political Science with the goal of becoming a lawyer, was also awarded the scholarship.

At the current tuition, room and board, and expenses, each student’s scholarship is valued at $280,000 over four years.

Justin Champagnie ‘19 did not hear his name called during the NBA­draft­a­few­months­ago­—­but­he­was­in­demand,­with­as­ many­as­16­teams­off­ering­a­two-way­contract.­Justin­now­plays­ for the Toronto Raptors.

Justin’s brother Julian ‘19 returned to St. John’s as a junior this year. He has been unanimously voted as a Preseason First Team Selection in the Big East. Several publications predict Julian will be the Big East Player of the Year.

Mike Williams ‘14 recently visited Loughlin to work with studentathletes for the day and speak to them about college and professional basketball. He was also preparing to depart for his new adventure playing in the Jordan Premier League (Euro Basketball League) for Al Ahli in Amman, Jordan.

JUNIOR OLYMPIC CHAMPION

NIA BLACK ‘24 Beyond being a setter on the Loughlin volleyball team, a member of the school’s choir, captain of the Latino Dance Club, and­profi­cient­in­ sign language, Nia Black ‘24 is a Junior Olympic Gold Medalist!

Training three hours a day (well, even longer on nonschool days), six days a week Nia has been on the USA Junior Olympic Weightlifting Team since June.

Currently competing internationally in the 14 - 15 year-olds 59 kg weight category, she looks forward to moving up to the 16 - 17 year-olds category in January. She has already qualifi­ed.

We recently sat down with Nia and asked her all about it.

What led you to competitive weightlifting?

“I­fi­rst­started­doing­Crossfi­t­when­I­was­about­11­years­old.­ I­didn’t­really­like­Crossfi­t­classes,­however,­I­did­excel­lifting­ weights. Not long after that, I decided to focus on Olympic weightlifting.­My­fi­rst­competition­was­in­the­eighth­grade.”­ Tell us more about your recent success.

“So, I got on team USA not too long ago and was sent in October to an international competition in Mexico in the 14 15 year-olds 59 kg weight category. And, I won!

I have been to national competitions in both California and Detroit, as well as many competitions in New York. At the moment I am training for NY states in January, as well as a fi­nal­(which­is­like­a­mini-national­competition)­in­Ohio.”­ Please tell us more about your international competition and Olympic goals.

“I knew prior to going to Mexico that I had potential to place.

While there, my main competition was China (who nearly always wins in international competition) and Columbia.

There were three attempts in the ‘snatch’, and I won silver,

placing behind China. But in ‘clean and jerks’ I set the new world record, winning gold. I won the ‘overall gold medal’ in the­competition.­I­dream­of­going­to­the­Olympics­in­2028.”­ What is your favorite part of weightlifting?

“I love making lifts that look impossible. When you make a lift and­then­go­for­it­—­the­next­level.­And­you­do­it!”­­­ Tell us more about your family, please.

“We are a Loughlin family. My sisters are Kyah Black ‘16 and Aleyana Black ‘20. Kyah is in law school after graduating from Lincoln University in 2020, with a major in Communications.

She was captain of the cheerleading team when she attended Loughlin as well as a member of house dance.

My sister Aleyana was captain of Cheer and volleyball while at Loughlin. She also was in Latino dance. (I take after her, I am the current captain of Latino dance and a part of the volleyball team). She now attends St. Johns University, studying­medicine­—­on­the­track­to­medical­school.”­ We are so proud of you Nia and wish you the best in March in Ohio!

LOUGHLIN TRACK TEAM IN LIFE MAGAZINE MAY 14, 1945

On May 14, 1945, Life Magazine planned to feature Loughlin Track on its prized magazine cover. But “The War Ends in Europe” bumped the story to page 83!

The story in Life magazine: Two weeks ago a quiet, young-looking man named George Eastment virtually clinched his claim to being the best high-school track coach in the U.S. His team, the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School of Brooklyn, has won ten championship outdoor meets in a row against other Catholic high schools.

It has gone on from there to win five of six open meets against all the other high schools in the East. Then last fortnight it went to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays, raced against the best teams from all over the U.S., and came home with four of the five titles. In

the 50-year history of the Penn Relays, the most important relay meet in the U.S., no other school has ever put on such a show.

The Loughlin track team has beaten all comers in spite of the fact that it is a ‘scholarship’ school, in which attendance is determined by competitive entrance examinations, and in spite of the fact that no boy over 18 can compete in athletics. The school had never won a track title before 1928. That was the year George Eastment took over.

George Eastment learned to run at Loughlin’s bitterest rival school, St. Augustine’s, later starred in the relays at Georgetown University. While studying to be a lawyer he took an afternoon off to watch Loughlin practice, made a few useful suggestions and was hired by the school that evening. An intense, modest man of 40, Eastment obtains his results by never letting his boys wear themselves out in practice. He rarely praises them, and never loses his temper. During the weekend of the Penn Relays he was nervous for the first time. Reason: three days later he became a father.

LASALLIAN YOUTH LEAD RACIAL JUSTICE DIALOGUE Bishop Loughlin was extremely proud to lead the conversation with high schools from Florida to Canada.

In February, about 100 Lasallian Youth leaders from high schools throughout DENA (District of Eastern North America) met on Zoom for a listening session on Racial Justice.

Nada went on to say, “This discussion raised various questions. We began by asking “what does racial justice mean to you?”­It­was­heartwarming­to­hear­that­ many individuals of various ethnicities believed that racial justice was seeking

equality and justice for all. We believed that this question was a necessary place to begin, because it gave insight as to what the group knew about the topic.

Helena said “As President of the Lasallian Youth Group, I really enjoy working with people who are willing to­sacrifi­ce­their­time­to­discuss­very­ important topics with the goal of understanding how people feel, and the hope of changing the world in a better way. Bishop Loughlin has always encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone­and­feel­confi­dent­enough­in­myself­ to conduct meetings and lead. In doing so, I have had wonderful opportunities to lead important and necessary meetings such as the Racial Justice session with fellow students­throughout­the­country.”­ She added, “Minutes before the sessions began, I felt myself starting to get nervous.

It was a group of people I had never met and I did not know how engaged they would­be­or­how­the­fl­ow­of­the­session­ would go. However, as the session evolved and people started responding to our questions, it felt wonderful knowing they all cared about the topic and they were respectful towards each other’s comments.

I am grateful to have been a part of such a wonderful­session­and­group­of­people.”

I feel blessed to have the opportunity­to­make­a­diff­erence.­During­ my time at Loughlin, this group has helped me develop my leadership, public speaking, and listening skills. It has taught me to be a better person through various community service opportunities. When Mr. Foley told me about the DENA Leadership Night, I jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Racial justice is a topic that must be made known! It is an issue that many men and women struggle with. It is important to hear­the­views­of­our­generation­­­—­how­ we view racial justice and what it means to us. I was a nervous about hosting this discussion because it is a very controversial topic. I prayed that it would go smoothly and we would complete everything on task.

It was a success!

At­fi­rst,­students­were­­reserved­about­ speaking but then the discussion got “meaty”.­I­loved­meeting­students­from­ other schools, in other states, and of diff­erent­ethnicities.­They­were­respectful­ and kind to each other so there was no judgment passed. I would love to lead another­discussion­sometime­soon.”

We also received responses from various students about their personal experiences with racism in their communities. A student talked about her feelings as an Asian American dealing with being­blamed­for­the­COVID­pandemic.­ A white student spoke about how one side of her family were people of color and therefore she was treated somewhat diff­erently.­A­third­student­shared­that­ students at his school would occasionally make racist statements, and downplay them­as­simply­“jokes”.­Based­on­a­lot­ of students’ experiences, racism is not taken seriously and many people feel comfortable­saying­off­ensive,­hurtful,­racist­ things­and­laugh­it­off­­because­it’s­“a­joke”­ and move on.

After leading this discussion, we learned how important the topic of racial justice is throughout the country and beyond.

We learned the importance of listening sessions, as they are a safe and “judgment free­zone”­to­learn­and­share.­We­are­both­ extremely thankful to the DENA leadership team for bringing together Lasallian high school students to share, listen, and make an action plan as we strive toward achieving­racial­justice.”

AROUND LOUGHLIN CAMPUS MINISTRY

OUR LASALLIAN TWIN — ST. MARY’S IN NYERI, KENYA Established in 1962, St. Mary’s Boys Secondary School is a Catholic, diocesan, Lasallian private boys school open to all regardless of religious denomination.

St. Mary’s serves more than 700 young men through various services: traditional high school, vocational training institute, child rescue center, and university sponsorship.

Like most schools in Kenya, all students board at St. Mary’s since the expense and availability of public transportation prohibits commuting. Boarding is also essential to ensure students get regular and quality instruction, food, medical care, electricity, time to study, and time to interact with boys from various backgrounds and tribes.

Loughlin students have supported St. Mary’s Secondary School in Nyeri, Kenya for 22 years. Several other Lasallian high schools also support St. Mary’s and Loughlin is proud to typically be the largest supporter raising between $10,000 and $16,000 each year. Without this support from Lasallian high schools, St. Mary’s could not continue to survive.

The pandemic almost completely eliminated the Campus Ministry’s ability to raise funds so the school turned to our alumni network­to­help­bridge­the­gap­—­with­our­fi­rst­ever­digital­ appeal for St. Mary’s. Thanks to our alumni, over $13,000 was raised which provided monies for tuition support, uniforms, and supplies for these young men. Thank you alumni!

OUR FOURTH CEREMONY!

When the doors of our school closed on March 15, 2020, we had no idea that it would be almost 18 months later when we would return to a place that many call a second home. These many months have been challenging for so many families, but we are thankful for the rainbow experiences and memorable moments.

As the 2021 school year began, parents were anxious, concerned, and­excited,­all­at­the­same­time.­Buzzing­and­shuffl ­­ing­sounds­ were­back­in­the­building­again­­—­the­sound­of­Loughlin­students,­ faculty,­and­staff­.­How­can­we­social­distance­when­students­want­ to give a big bear hug to their teachers and friends they have not seen in months? It took time for everyone to get reacclimated into a routine of commuting, wearing masks (which is now a part of the school uniform), and daily temperature checks. Never in a million years did we think that this would be our new reality.

Did­you­fi­nd­yourself­saying­“I­can’t­wait­for­everything­to­go­back­ to­normal.”­I­ask­“do­we­really­want­everything­to­go­back­to­the­ way­things­were?”­After­being­in­quarantine­for­so­many­months,­ we­had­the­opportunity­to­refl­ect­and­realize­that­sometimes­ change is necessary.

Loughlin celebrated its fourth annual White Coat Ceremony­in­November­—­honoring­38­‘White­Coat’­ recipients , a record-breaking number! To earn their white lab coats, students had to successfully complete a series of Biomedical Science courses through our PLTW (Project Lead the Way) Program, taught by Ms. Lamarque, Ms. Randall, and Mr. Santiago.

We were also very blessed to have had Dr. Carelle Cherebin ‘05 as our guest speaker for the ceremony.

Dr. Cherebin is currently an attending physician at Stonybrook Medical.

Thank you parents, guardians, and friends for attending our ceremony and giving our Lions great encouragement and support! And, congratulations to all of our White Coat recipients!

Most of our students are now equipped with an Apple iPad. Since remote learning has been implemented, our students do not have to miss school on snow days. Attendance for our PTA monthly meetings has now skyrocketed! It gives our parents an opportunity to connect from anywhere and not worry about missing informative sessions. Another plus, if they are unable to get­a­break­from­work,­or­are­stuck­in­traffi ­­c,­the­meetings­are­ recorded for them to play back at their convenience. Our school traditions such as The White Coat Ceremony, the National Honor Society­Induction­Ceremony,­“Senior­Ring­Day”­and­graduation­ ceremonies will remain. But as the world turns, we must continue to be creative and innovative.

This is my daughter’s senior year at Loughlin. It is surreal because it feels like yesterday when she arrived as a freshman. It has been an amazing journey with a host of learning experiences. I have witnessed how she has matured and developed long-lasting relationships­(which­we­have­both­established).­Since­our­fi­rst­day,­ Loughlin has been our family and we will continue to support and stay connected.

Loughlin is proud of the leadership of the Loughlin Parents Association.

The PTA is supportive and extremely helpful working with the administration. It is safe to say that the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic could not have been successfully navigated without this partnership. We commend PTA President, Ms. Adrienne Loiseau, and her leadership team for all they have done.

National Honor Society inducts 94 students

In October Bishop Loughlin inducted a modern day record number 94 students into its chapter of the National Honor Society. The school welcomed 37new seniors and 46 juniors into the Chapter. Eleven seniors were inducted for a second year.

To qualify for the Loughlin Chapter of the National Honor Society, students are eligible to apply if they demonstrate academic achievement. They must meet several requirements to be inducted: earn an 87% average or higher, receive teacher recommendations, and demonstrate exemplary character, service, and leadership. Congrats inductees! Meeting the new Bishop of Brooklyn Succeeding Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio, Bishop Robert Brennan was installed as the Eighth Bishop of Brooklyn on November 30, 2021.

Fewer than 10% of NYC schools continued their performance programs through the pandemic.

Despite great obstacles, Loughlin students continue to excel in Music and Performing Arts. Eleven students (recently) received (or just received) perfect scores at the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) evaluation festival this year ­— the largest percentage of Loughlin students to receive a perfect score in school history.

Of the 38 solo and small ensembles, 26 received the highest rating and 12 received the secondhighest rating (there are seven ratings in all).

This year’s 12th Annual Loughlin Literary Event, held virtually, began with a collaborative, original performance by Loughlin’s Poets and Writers Club and Drama Club. The writers and performers were led by Poets and Writers Club president, Jocelyn Serrano Atienza ‘23 and vice president, Tai Sheppard ‘23, as well as Poets and Writers Club moderator, Mr. Frank and Drama Club director, Mr. Johnson. A number of the performers are members of both clubs. This year’s writers and performers included short stories, monologues, poems, songs, and even a travelogue.

The winners of the 12th Annual BLoglin Writing Contest’ were (first prize) Emmanuel Benamer ’23 for the short story The Beginning of the End; Marcus Hardy ‘22 (second prize) for the short story yin to my, and Kiana Ketcham ‘24 (third prize) for the poem Ephemera. Kiana also received the 2021 Rising Writer Award — awarded to a freshman who shows exceptional promise in the written word. Finally, the recipient of The 2021 Scribe Award was Rose Walsh ‘21 for her outstanding contributions to the written word while at Loughlin.

At the conclusion of the collaborative clubs performance, the seniors Hanny Echeverria Navarro, Celines Garcia, Jasmine Hooker, and Rose Walsh were recognized for their performances over the last four years.

PAVE THE WAY The pandemic severely affected our capital PAVE THE WAY Campaign to restore, repair, and improve the courtyard area between the track and school building. The stairs will be repaired, a handicap accessible ramp will be installed, and we will create a welcoming courtyard with an attractive brick pathway. Scibelli ’47 writes “My teaching career of 41 years, and 20 more as a substitute, was rooted in my life with The­Christian­Brothers­—­St.­Cecilia’s­ and Bishop Loughlin. Brother Joseph and Brother Adelbert James created an indelible love of literature that lasted a lifetime. Through them I was able to pass­this­love­to­others.”

Henry V. Nietzschmann ’48 is living in a­Dominican­Village­run­by­the­Sisters­ of St. Dominic of Amityville, Long Island.

“We have mass, communion, and rosary regularly. God chooses the moment He calls­us­back.”­ Gerald W. Buetow M.D. ’49 is almost 90 and retired. John S. Polickoski ’52 married Marianne Blaine (a 1953 graduate of BMD) in 1957 in the Catholic chapel at West Point, New York. “Marianne died due to a fall as part of a massive stroke in February, 2021. After almost 64 years of marriage, I­miss­her­very­much.”­ John (Jack) Caravan ’53­fi­nally­retired­ in 2017 after several unsuccessful attempts at retirement. Currently working on a handbook relating­to­stamp­collecting­—­a­hobby.­I­ relocated to Smithtown this summer to be closer to my adult children.

Joseph Anticaglia, M.D. ’57 is a retired M.D. (ENT). “Brother Peter, the librarian, encouraged me to follow my interest in medicine. He furnished me with articles and stories about doctors. I currently write medical articles for Doctor’s column.”

Frank J. Flood ’57 was recently widowed again and moved from Beaver Creek, CO­and­Bluff­ton,­SC­to­CCRC­in­Naples,­ FL. Joan E. Hellmann for Joseph B. Hellman ’57 writes, “The ‘Joseph B. Hellmann Overlook’ of Old Oak Pond, Douglaston, NY is named in honor of Joseph by the NYC Parks Dept. Joseph died on May 28, 2010.”

Marco R. Orlando ’57 writes that his “family­has­managed­to­avoid­COVID-19,­ but we were devastated when my oldest son, Paul, was diagnosed with a late stage cancer. Hopefully he will overcome the prognosis with the help of­prayers­from­the­Loughlin­family.”

Robert Teed ’57 graduated from Pace College and retired in 2004 from the LIRR (Contract Manager).

Thomas F. Walby Ph.D. ’57 retired as the Director of Flight Training at Airbus Americas after a 55-year career in aviation. He piloted everything from a Cessna 172 to a DC3, B-757, and a A-340. He and his wife Lilian celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last April.

James T. Curran ’58 is a Professor Emeritus at John Jay College, The City University of New York.

garden apartment in Eastchester ­—­only­two­blocks­away­from­our­ grandchildren. No more stairs to climb.

We will not travel to our second home in Sarasota, FL. this year because of concerns­related­to­COVID-19.­We­look­ forward to the successful administering of the vaccine and a return to normalcy.

Vincent Vadala ’58 graduated from Manhattan College in 1962, spent two years U.S. Army overseas, and 35 years in insurance management. He retired in 1998 and relocated to FL. Married for over 55 years to Lorraine, they have a daughter and two grandsons. “I have many fond memories of my high school years at Loughlin and the many good friends with whom I shared those days!

I remember my time in the orchestra and jazz band and our musical director, Angelo­Consoli.”

David M. Buro ’60 remembers Brother James’ Latin classes very well. “We never knew if we would be learning conjugation or having a lesson on personal­hygiene.”

Anthony Cosenza, Ph.D. ’60 is a former graduate school associate professor, founder of Covalent Counsel, and currently is a psychologist in private practice.­He­recently­published­his­fi­fth­ spiritually based book.

John Ingram ’60 is a retired Justice NYS Supreme Court (2003-2019) who is currently an arbitrator/mediator with NAM. He was a Captain USNR (19641969) and Rear Admiral (NY Naval Militia (1966-2011).

I spent 30 years in NYC at Metals Companies buying and selling scrap copper and aluminum. Then I moved to FL for another 15 years. I’m so glad I went to BLMHS and thank you! Frank J. Russo ’60 married Elizabeth (Bette Lou) McKnight ‘61 (BMD) after meeting at a dance at Mary Immaculate Hospital in 1961. They have seven children and 35 grandchildren.

George W. Stubbs M.D. ’60 met some of his best friends while attending Bishop Loughlin.

James Tubman ’60 graduated from Fordham College and NYU, was commissioned an Army lieutenant, and posted to Germany where he married the Colonel’s daughter. After a career with AT&T in four states, they retired to western NJ where he teaches at Penn State’s­Lehigh­Valley­campus­—­which­ he still enjoys.

James P. McLoughlin ‘61 says “It’s been 60 years since I walked up the steps and got my diploma at Bishop Loughlin.

My parents were so proud. A lot has happened in my life during that life span but I will always remember the four years at Loughlin. Unfortunately, my Loughlin ring currently resides under the sand at Bayville Beach in Nassau County where I lost it during the Summer­of­1967.”­ Patrick D. Sullivan, Ph.D. ’61 has three grandchildren.

Harry V. Bernstein ’63 retired from Essex County College in 2019 after 50 years before the board (chalk). He continues to volunteer at Oznam Hall and is an active member of Matt Talbot Group 39. His wife of 49 years continues her battle with MS, a stroke, and a fractured­hip­—­but­prayers­have­helped­ her to smile through it all!

Alfred Cavuto ’63 had a 28-year career with the DEA. He has worked for 21 years in security/investigations with American Express. “I am proud to see that Loughlin is still going strong and committed to educating the children of

the community it serves. My brother, alum Michael Cavuto ‘73, passed away in­2012.”

Michael Della Croce ’63 is retired. He writes “my granddaughter received a partial scholarship to Preston, a Catholic all girls High School in the Bronx. Proud granddad!”

Stephen T. DeVincent ’63 writes in that “thanks to having an excellent fi­nancial­advisor­as­well­as­a­generous­ inheritance from my parents I was able to set up endowments with Anna Maria College, Bishop Loughlin, Southeast Asian Coalition, and Urban Missionaries of Worcester, MA. I spend my retirement assisting a large group of refugees from the Worcester area. They are a blessing to­my­life.”

Dr. Frederick C. Matusiak ’63 is retired from teaching and 20 years in the Air Force. He is “battling some health issues including cancer. Please keep me in your prayers.”

Al Schebera ’63 is retired after 16 years in child welfare (child protection, foster care, adoptions) in Illinois, Wyoming, and Missouri. He previously was a social worker in a Catholic hospital in St. Louis, MO for 28 years. “I hope I did some good in my life in some small way following the example of St. John Baptist de la Salle. I love the quiet life now away from the madness and stress of child welfare and hospital social work. I mourn the passing of former classmates whom­I­knew­and­had­aff­ection­for.”

As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I was fortunate to work with many families and come to understand with them the challenges, sorrows, and victories of parenting a child with mental illness. Retirement is very busy as I shift to advocacy for mental health and focus on growing old with­my­grandchildren.”

William P. Kiley ’66 published his fi­rst­children’s­picture­book,­Hope and Freckles: Fleeing to a Better Forest.

Joan Porto —wife of deceased alum Michael Porto ’66 writes “Mike loved his years at Loughlin. He always recalled when the school went to early session to allow another school to use the building later in the day. He had just moved to Queens that summer from Brooklyn.

The trip was extra-long and extra-early but­very­worthwhile!”

Vincent S. Viglione ’66 writes “Bishop Loughlin instilled in me the concepts of attention to detail and the pursuit of excellence. It took a few years to seep into my consciousness but when it did, it made­all­the­diff­erence­in­who­I­became­ and­who­I­am­today.”

Joseph J. Fennessy ’67 is retired from Deloitte & Touche and currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital. He was recently elected to the Board of Molloy College.­He­enjoys­watching­his­fi­ve­ grandchildren participate in high school and club sports.

Joseph Cocchiarelli ’68 published a novel, Ghost Song 2019, which tells

how the Beowulf poet came to write the OE epic. The revised edition of his fi­lmography­and­essays­on­crime­fi­lm,­ Screen Sleuths 2020, has been reissued with­entries­which­include­fi­lms­and­ television series in the detective genre up until 2005. Both are available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. He is currently working on Still Life With Cats: A Cancer Journal and Cultural Commentary in the Time of COVID, which describes the year he spent traversing major surgeries and chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The book will be available soon.

Richard Norowski ’68 has fond memories of Economics teacher Mr. Bowes.

Thomas G. McCormick ’69 loved meeting up with classmates Carlo Esposito and Eddie Wallace. After six years­as­a­widower­—­and­at­age­70­ —­­he­met­and­married­a­girl­from­St.­ Michaels High School. He writes, “thank God she never took the A train. An Irishman marries an Italian (great cook).

Don’t think I can run cross country after her meals. Also, it was a great gathering for our 50th. I am proud to be a­Brothers’­boy.”

Kenneth Marco ’71 is happily retired after working 42 years at the New York Daily News. He is doing some consulting work with other advertising media companies.

My daughter, LaShaunta Johnson ‘06, passed­away­last­year­from­COVID-19­ complications one month after giving birth to my grandson. He was born on 3/24/20 and she passed away on 4/23/20. It’s still hard to believe and so hard to wrap my mind around it, but I have to be strong for Amari. I miss her so much. ST. AUGUSTINE HIGH SCHOOL

Charles Campbell ’50 tells us that “after graduating from St. Augustine, I went to CCNY Business School and majored in accounting. I spent two years in the Army and a few weeks after discharge, joined the Colgate Palmolive Co. for 33­years­working­in­various­fi­nancial­ departments and in systems. I was part of­the­team­working­on­the­fi­rst­IBM­ 1401 installation. I have been retired for 32­years.”

Alan J. Leahy, CPA (Ret) ’50 graduated from Fordham University in 1954 with a degree in accounting. After two years in Army (18 months with Army Audit in Los Angeles), he received an honorable discharge in 1956 and married Shirley in 1957. They have three children and four grandsons. A CPA, he retired in 1980 and has lived in Sierra Madre, CA for 50 years.

James R. Cullen ’54 has two children and four grandchildren.

William Elberfeld ’55 asks for prayers for the repose of the soul of his wife Nancy, The Holy Father, the end of abortion, persecuted Christians, religious vocations, and family health.

Robert E. Donohue ’57 graduated from St. John’s University (1960) and NYU School of Medicine (1964). He writes “I became a urologist and moved to the University of Colorado in 1972. I became Chief of Urology at the Denver CAMC in 1977 and then was appointed Professor.

I retired in 2009 and live in Denver with my­wife,­Julia.”

Joseph Carpenter ’58 retired in 2016 as Principal of St. Thomas the Apostle in­Woodhaven­—­after­51­years­in­ education.

John Mariner ’59 has been married to a wonderful woman for over 40 years. “I fondly remember being school President in 1959, captain of the track team, and getting in trouble for the

teams ‘unauthorized’ trips to the Penn Relay (we stunk!). St. Augustine was important­in­keeping­me­off­­the­streets!­ Thank­you!”

John M. Russo ’60 and his wife Linda of almost 49 years are living in Centennial, CO. He tells us “Our son, Justin, is married and has two children. I am retired after working in various jobs in the­computer­fi­eld.­My­wife­is­a­retired­ teacher.”

Frank Clarke ’61 was delighted to see his cousin’s picture in the last issue of Clermont. “John Clarke (St. A ‘62) was just a year behind me, and we were both there when the airplane crashed onto Sterling Place, December 16, 1960. In my retirement, I have taken up writing for pleasure (it certainly can’t­be­for­profi­t)­and­have­published­ several books: Tipping Point and The Farside Chronicles which can be found on Amazon. I just recently reconnected with Courtenay Ettricks ‘61, who has a presence on Facebook. I am mostly retired, although my phone occasionally rings with someone needing mainframe meta-programming expertise. I am waiting­for­COVID­madness­to­abate­so­ that­we­can­get­busy­traveling­again.”

Anthony M. Riccio Jr. ’61 has served as­an­Intelligence­Offi ­­cer­(19681972), a NYC Commissioner of Ports International Trade and Commerce (1988), Private Developer NYC (1990-2016), and a Private Economic Consultant since 2017.

John P. Finn ’62 retired in 2015 and is currently recovering from three back surgeries­“due­to­getting­old!”

Thomas J. Fiskaa ’62 is awaiting the arrival­of­a­13th­grandchild­—­so­far­ he has nine grandsons and three granddaughters.

Edward F. Smith ’62­writes­“I­was­fi­nally­ promoted to grandfather in 2021 with the arrival of two granddaughters.

Happy to report, that Grandma and Grandpa­are­doing­well.”

John J. Ross ’64 is missing school. “Oh, to be back with my school mates, the Brothers, Mr. Brustman, the Faculty… it did take about ten years following graduation to appreciate it, though a month­of­COVID­is­unimaginable.”

Andrew J. MacDonald ’64 is still going strong­—­married­for­48­years­with­ four children and six grandchildren. He works in real estate in NY. Alexander M. Brezsnyak ’65 writes “As a­ITA­and­USTA­certifi­ed­referee,­I­will­ be working the United States Tennis Association Boys 16/18 National Clay Court Championships in Delray Beach, FL.­Go­Lancers.”

Walter P. Kelly ’66 writes “As I look back at my days at St. Augustine HS (and grammar school too), it reminds me of all the people (teachers, coaches, classmates,­and­other­staff­ )­who­ wanted us to learn, grow, be successful, and enjoy life. Sure there were lots of challenges, some disappointments and just bad days, but St. Augustine was always there and had my back. Glad to know that the current team is still on the ever necessary job of nurturing HOPE!” Jerome F. Hoffman ’69 now has two grandsons and a granddaughter.

Edward T. Stack ’69 and his wife Mary recently sold their part-time home near Hilton Head, SC and their primary residence in Langhorne, PA (to be closer to their daughter). They purchased a new home 2.4 miles away in a maintenance-free over 55 community in the Residence at Yardley. “We are so happy to be rid of the pool and lawn maintenance, etc. but so close to our family and friends. My best to the St. Augustine­and­Bishop­Loughlin­alumni.”

ST. AUGUSTINE CLASS OF 1969 MEMORIAL TREE PLANTING CEREMONY

The Prospect Park Alliance Association sent out an early fall email mentioning that there were going to be two tree planting events — one in the spring for Arbor Day, the other to take place in the fall — both would take place in Prospect Park.

One of the original 1969 50th reunion committee members polled the class to see if they would be interested in having a tree planted in memory of their deceased class members and faculty. The response was “let’s do it!”

A GoFundMe account was created and the rest is history. In two months the goal of $2,000 was met — many alumni contributed.

MAY THIS TREE BEAR WITNESS TO THE EVERLASTING FRIENDSHIP BORNE IN THE HEARTS OF ALL THEIR CLASSMATES Then, on November 3, 2021, a tree was planted in Prospect Park, at the Ocean and Parkside Avenue entrance (approximately 50 yards in from the entrance standing on a hill). Twenty alumni attended the Memorial Tree Dedication Ceremony including Kathleen Evanac, wife of Francis

Evanac ‘69 and Jacqueline DeMeo, wife of Peter DeMeo ‘69. Both participated in the ceremony by shoveling dirt into where the tree is planted. A custom designed “Lancer” shovel was used and each spouse received one. A third was donated to Bishop Loughlin to put on display in the Saint Augustine Hall of Fame wing at the school.

The alumni met after the Memorial at Gino’s Italian Restaurant located on 5th Avenue between 74th & 75th Streets.

In keeping with the spirit of the day we ordered “FAMILY” style — sharing the meal just like most had done when we were young — passing plates around, laughing and reminiscing. It was a good time for all.

REUNIONS 2021 THREE REUNIONS! On October 2, along with the Class of 1945, 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965, and 1975, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1970 (since we could not last year).

On October 16 we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1971 with the Classes of 1946, 1951, 1956, 1961, 1966, and 1976.

And, we met on November 6 virtually with the Classes of 1980, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2015, and 2016.

Whether in person or virtual, it was wonderful to see so many alumni. We’re glad you were able to reconnect with your classmates and meet some new friends. Let’s not wait too long before we do it again!!!
