Dear Friend of Loughlin, The school year began well and we are into a new semester.

Time is fleet of foot. There is much work going on — in and out of the classrooms. All of the activity seems to accelerate the pace of school life. The Admissions team will see the result of their recruitment efforts. They hosted a special day for scholarship recipients and registration takes place in March. You may be surprised to know that there are only 30 Catholic Elementary schools in Brooklyn. There is some consolation in the fact that there are more in Queens, 53. None the less, you can appreciate that our recruitment team casts a wide net encompassing public, charter, and Christian schools. The landscape Loughlin negotiates is rich, varied, and challenging.

In the classroom, our STEM program continues to gain momentum. Over 190 students are registered in these hands-on lab courses. Next year we are adding courses to engage students in more focused, higher level study. Learning was enhanced in History classes by a visit from a Civil War re-enactor and the STEM Biomedical Science classes by a visit from NYPD CSI Division. Art students visited the Morgan Library. Later this Spring a group of

students from several classes will be participants in a program at the Holocaust Memorial.

As you open the pages of this edition of Clermont you will be able to catch-up on some wonderful events that have taken place since the previous issue — reunions, Hall of Fame inductions, the golf outing. You will also read some first hand comments from students about our STEM program. You’ll see some information which underscores our strength as a college prep program. And you may want to note a small anouncement of Br. Peter’s 90th birthday. We celebrated at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in late January.

Brother has served Loughlin students in three incarnations for a total 46 years.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Course curriculums in STEM areas integrate real-life situations, solutions, and project-based learning. STEM is one of the fastest-growing areas of our economy and based on numerous studies, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math are an important part of learning in an increasingly competitive and global marketplace. Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the largest nationally recognized STEM education nonprofit organization. PLTW partners with K-12 schools and educators and “through an engaging, hands-on curriculum, encourages the development of problem-solving skills, critical thinking, creative and innovative reasoning, and a love of learning.” Source: PLTW

L

oughlin recognizes that a successful college prep high school offers state-of-the-art technology, multiple AP course options, and new and exciting programs. Adopted into its curriculum in 2016, Project Lead The Way (PLTW), has already made a marked impact on student learning.

Studies show that STEM careers are growing faster than any other. Our goal is to prepare our students for these exciting and well-paying choices. Due to a rising demand and increasingly available opportunities in these fields, STEM jobs are set to increase 17 percent between now and 2024.

Launching the school’s own PLTW program required comprehensive renovations to classrooms on three floors of our building, training all PLTW faculty at the Rochester Institute of Technology and the University of Texas at Tyler, and purchasing new lab equipment, laptops, 3D printers, and many other necessary essentials.

In the future — unlike most other high school STEM programs that enroll only top tier students — Loughlin’s goal is to offer opportunities in PLTW courses to any student who works hard to be successful.

T

his past Fall, Art Ryan ’59 visited his alma mater to tour the new Biomedical Science and Engineering Labs. He spent several hours with students and faculty observing and participating in the exciting and growing STEM (PLTW@Loughlin) program at Loughlin — over 190 students are enrolled in the program this year. Mr. Ryan walked away impressed with the student enthusiasm and the labs that he and his wife Pat made possible through a one million dollar donation in 2015 to The Three Schools, One Foundation Campaign.

The Ryans are long supporters of Loughlin — the Ryan Technology Room was the result in a significant investment made nearly a decade ago. This investment enabled Loughlin to wire the school and put SmartBoard technology throughout the building. Along with new computers, a new computer lab was constructed and new technology was incorporated into the Library and Media-Technology Center.

Through the Three Schools, One Foundation Campaign, Mr. Ryan and our President Br. Dennis collaborated and put the foundational structures in place for PLTW@Loughlin to take off.

Loughlin has five courses (and growing) in the curriculum with ten sections this year. Our goal is to expose as many students as possible to STEM courses. In addition to Engineering and Biomedical Science, Loughlin will introduce a Computer Science track soon.

Other alumni have embraced and made significant investments in our PLTW program success including Ed Toseland ’58 and Jim Orenga ’58 and his wife Toni. Paul Migliore ’63, an aerospace engineer — and his wife Lissette, are the first to establish an endowed scholarship, The Migliore Family Scholarship Fund, to support our future engineers.

Loughlin is proud of this new venture and recognizes that the success of the PLTW program requires ongoing support from alumni and friends.

@LOUGHLIN CONCERT SPECTACULAR ’17 LOUGHLIN’S ALL-DAY OPEN HOUSE

T

he all-day Open House — better known as the Concert Spectacular — held in October, gave guest students from the 14 invited schools an inside look at Loughlin. It was a huge success.

Tours following the school’s daily class schedule allowed visiting students the opportunity to experience a daily routine they may possibly experience for the next four years.

One of the things that made the Concert Spectacular special was the interaction and activities between potential students and the current Loughlin Lions. Beyond visiting classrooms, our eighth grade guests were able to engage and hang outside on our brand new track with Loughlin athletes and watch a performance by our cheerleaders. It was a wonderful day, and a step in the right direction for future Loughlinites.

COLLEGE Georgetown University, Fall 2018 ASPIRATIONS Win Big East Championships, make it to the NCAA finals, earn a degree in Business, be an Olympian, and run track professionally.

YEARS IN CURRENT SPORT “I’ve been running track since about the age of three. However, I didn’t get serious about it until eighth grade when I ran at club nationals for the first time; I was humiliated and cried my eyes out. I hated to lose so I just started taking everything more seriously and was able to get to a competitive level.”

WHY TRACK? “To me, track is not just a sport, it’s my golden ticket — my way out of my struggles. It motivates me to get up every morning to go to school and do the work.”

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT “My greatest accomplishment was placing second at Hershey Nationals and also qualifying for every finals event of my junior year — that was when the pressure started to come in.”

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ULTIMATE ACHIEVEMENT? “My ultimate achievement would be going U.S. #1 for the 400 meter and for the 200 meter my senior year of high school.”

HOW DO YOU SET YOUR GOALS AND WHAT ARE YOUR CHALLENGES? “I set my goals based on what my competition is doing, my goal is always to just surpass my competition and try to be the best that I know I can be.

My biggest challenge is trying to calm down when I’m under pressure. For example, coming in second place at Hershey Nationals in the 400-meter dash had my head all over the place and it threw me off for all my other events.

Now my best way of managing this problem is speaking with either my high school coach (Greg Armstrong) or my club coaches (Rhonda Hopkins and Jimmy Wilkerson) who all tell me the same thing — relax.”

@LOUGHLIN Loughlin ENGLISH Department An INTERVIEW with ENGLISH DEPARTMENT CHAIR REGINA BRATICHAK Education BA, Brooklyn College; MS, Fordham University; Post graduate work, Fordham University, La Salle University, and Long Island University Career Began teaching in 1980 and has been at Bishop Loughlin since 2004

How has the department changed in the last ten years?

The department has introduced a new program called Achieve 3000 to assess a student’s reading level and tailor work in accordance to their level. One of the Middle State goals for the English department during the midterm assessment was to improve students Lexile scores (readability levels). We’re close to target with our sophomores and we have exceeded our goal for juniors and seniors. The data gathered from this program is used as one of the criterion when placing students in Honor classes.

Another change we’ve made in the English department is the type of courses we offer to seniors. Students are mandated to take the English Regents after the 11th grade. Seniors are given the opportunity to choose two half-credit English classes (students are required to take at least two English electives to receive credit for 12th grade English). We used to just have 12th grade English, but I proposed offering electives in its place. As a college prep school, offering students semester-long courses helps them budget time and make choices — much like in college. This year we offer seven different electives: Public Speaking, Creative Writing, Poetry, Mystery and Horror, Non-fiction Writing (Journalism), Classics in Literature (connects literature and film), and Modern American Literature. In addition to these electives, AP Literature and Composition is offered.

How does the Achieve 3000 program help with developing student’s reading skills?

We assess reading for all students using a measure called Lexile through the Achieve 3000 program. The program automatically uses the reading levels to match students with articles (reading resources) at their reading Lexile. Statistics show that if students complete forty of these articles, their grade level improves the equivalent of one year. Some of our students have gained as much as two years of readability in one year of school. This improvement in readability carries over to other subject areas as all the content assigned through Achieve 3000 is nonfiction.

Describe the English curriculum at Loughlin and how does it incorporate Lasallian principles?

Academically, Loughlin follows and meets the standards set forth by The New York State Department of Education. As a department, each of our academic expectations exceeds what the state has set through the Board of Regents. For example, when we graded the Regents recently, the teachers reviewed state’s directions and standards as what is acceptable, good, and very good. That day, we all had to take a step down from our standards to be fair to the students and measure them according to New York State standards. Because we have a much higher expectation for our students, all 40 of our honor students passed. In one class, 21 out of 22 students achieved the Mastery level (grade of 85 and higher), and in another class, 11 out of 18 students achieved the Mastery level. In total, 80% of the students who took the Regents achieved Mastery level. The current class average on the January Regents for the Honors juniors is 87.5.

We incorporate the Lasallian core principle of quality education with high expectations for students. For the other four Lasallian core principles, there is a natural concern for the poor — we remember every day that we are in the Holy presence of God. We have respect for every human being in the classroom, and lastly, as a department, we strive for an inclusive community. Our assignments meet different modalities — so it’s not always just write an essay, or make a speech, or take a test. Students are encouraged to produce work in many ways. Certainly all students have to take tests and write essays, but we provide opportunities for students to dress up like a character, create Powerpoint presentations and posters, debate, or participate in group projects.

What English courses are offered and how is technology used in the curriculum?

Freshmen are placed in either regular or Honors English. We also have the Reading Workshop — assigned in addition to a regular English class for students whose middle/grammar school records indicate a lower level literacy performance. Sophomores and juniors also have regular and honors courses available, and for seniors, we offer electives and AP Literature and Composition (this year 45 students are enrolled in our AP course and will take the exam in May). The school’s philosophy is that if students are interested in a class and are up to the challenge, they are encouraged to take it.

As for technology, the Achieve 3000 program is tech based, as the software measures a Lexile score through a Level Set Assessment designed by MetaMetrics. Teachers use this software to assign articles with tailored text to fit a student’s reading level. In addition to the readings, students have to complete labs to measure ongoing assessment; the data from this program helps teachers identify a student’s strengths and weaknesses. Computers are used by all grade levels for research and composition purposes. We use several of the databases on the school’s website on a regular basis in classrooms. Some teachers use Kahoot, a game-based platform that creates an emotional, playful, engaging, and social learning environment, for in-class reviews. The program helps students interactively learn and connect with one another. Lastly, students have some options to utilize technology when presenting. For

What resources does Loughlin offer to juniors and seniors to help with the college application process?

Essays are a part of every class — for all four years. This helps prepare students for the college application process. Every teacher in our department offers before and/or after school help to provide students with assistance and feedback. Some of the senior teachers do have specific college essays or personal essays as assignments.

How are the English classes offered at Loughlin different from other high schools?

Again, I think what sets us apart are our very high standards. We try hard to make connections between major sources of literature and shorter readings that supplement them. For example, the book Lord of the Flies is commonly used in high schools. When teaching this book, I incorporate the theme of “what’s worth fighting for” across other pieces of literature as well. In addition to the novel, I will introduce nonfiction literature that focuses on what people really need for survival. I use three short stories, two poems, and a play (nonfiction as well) such as the Freedom Writers to incorporate the theme being used. The fact that we do things so thematically helps students with building connections. Furthermore, we assign a meaningful amount of writing. What we give to students is certainly manageable, however, we do have a high expectations for writing. We grade higher than the New York State standards, and we consistently encourage students to edit, revise, and resubmit their work. Additionally at Loughlin, every grade level (honors and regular English classes) requires students to use MLA (Modern Language Association) style research.

It is a formatting style used for research papers, in-text citations, and works cited pages that can be applied to different types of writing.

How do you guide students to apply what is taught in class to real world situations?

Assigning nonfiction literature to students helps build connections so they can apply what is taught in the classroom to real world situations.

Each teacher individually incorporates assignments that will help students further apply what is taught in class to their personal lives.

Chelsea Medina, a graduate of St. Joseph’s College — Brooklyn, student-taught at Loughlin and now is a member of the English Department.

H

ow could I not be excited to be back at Bishop Loughlin? This time, however, I find myself educating a classroom for an entire day and not just every other period. I’m no longer in the back taking notes. This past Fall I taught five junior classes.

The only way I can describe it would be to do it in the fashion of a true English teacher: citation and interpretation.

In a favorite play of mine, Shakespeare’s melancholy Jaques says that “All the world’s a stage/ and all the men and women merely players” (As You Like It, Act II, Scene VII). Why, then, do I find myself being the stage crew?

My students are actors in the roles of “schoolboy”, “lover”, and “soldier” as the monologue suggests. They play the “whining schoolboy” particularly well.

However, I do not wish to strut the stage as I once had in college. I do not wish to even be a director anymore.

Though my students may disagree, I do not particularly like the way my voice sounds when it is raised. I’d rather watch from the wings. Sweep the stage of mishaps. Hoist them up onto cables.

I’d rather be the eyes and ears of their performance (and yes, I hear even the lines not delivered into a microphone).

Anyone in the Performing Arts Center would agree that being a stagehand is not a glorious job. It’s hard sometimes to tell the difference between being crew and being a teacher — when you want to crash after the long hours but can’t because ‘the show must go on!’ Somedays, it feels like my own personal tech week (or what we theatre people like to call “Hell Week”). Those days are the worst AND the best. While it is very exhausting and emotional, there is a sense of accomplishment for everyone involved. That is also the week where stage crew is needed most.

In my years of performance, I have never been so satisfied to be ‘backstage’. I know I’m new to this teacher ‘thing’, but I can’t hide my excitement for my growth as an educator. My actors/ students have no idea what joy they bring me. One small accomplishment for them is an incredible success for me as teacher.

I vow to be there for my beautiful, talented actors even after their ‘broken legs’ and ‘final bows’.

@LOUGHLIN STUDENT ESSAYS ı FINDING MYSELF MY LIFE IN INK

“Writing is an exploration. You start from nothing and learn as you go.”

This quote from American author E. L. Doctorow perfectly describes my upbringing as a writer. As a student, I can honestly say that my passion for writing was birthed through my experiences in my English classes. I quickly learned that the best way to express myself was with pen and pad. I never completely appreciated writing and literature until I took part in the multitude of creative aspects that make up my school’s English program. My interest in free thinking developed as a result of my journey through high school here at Bishop Loughlin.

Believe it or not, there was once a time in my life where I actually dreaded reading and writing. Prior to high school, my fondest memories of reading came when I was coerced by teachers. In particular, many of us have had experiences with assigned readings on novels we never knew existed, followed by a lengthy book report. We didn’t like it, but we needed to

get the job done. We would do anything to finish the task at hand, whether we skipped pages or simply viewed the screenplay version instead.

This was once my perception of literature — a burden that I just had to get through.

Fast forward to my freshman year at Bishop Loughlin, and suddenly — an epiphany. I became more inclined to learn about the English language and apply it to my own writing and hastily grew enthusiastic about expressing myself, particularly through poetry.

My freshman, sophomore, and junior years have witnessed a flourishing metamorphosis in regards to poetic self-expression. My newly acquired interest in writing and reading became an outlet of success for me. I applied the skills that I learned and participated in several poetry contests and other literary events. Ultimately, my passion granted me success and graced me with awards and even a publication of my work. To this day, as a senior, my endeavors in writing have not ceased, but expanded on other fronts.

With a pen and paper, I learned that I have the potential to conquer the world, one stroke at a time. Each and every day, my skills are becoming better and better, courtesy of my high school English teachers.

FINDING MY PRIDE

The me who entered Bishop Loughlin was an eccentric, yet shy 13-year-old girl — eager to please and excited to take on the world. A long road of trials and tribulations awaited me.

Now, looking back as an almost 17-year-old high school senior, I wouldn’t have smoothed out any of the bumps in the road, for any reason.

No, I wouldn’t go back and tell myself things I should have done better. Instead, I would give my younger self this advice — take it easy on yourself.

I was born into a very impossible-to-please family. They were, and still are, well meaning, but abrasive. Naturally, I grew a thick skin, something that continues to serve as armor in the rough world around me. I wanted more than anything to please everyone — family, friends, teachers, classmates, etc. The one person I never made a priority was myself. I was living a lie, constantly forcing myself into a shapeshifter type;

the true version of myself became muddled between fake after fake version. It’s hard enough going through the process of selfidentity as a teenager; for me, it was harder because I was constantly turning into someone I was not.

It wasn’t until my junior year of high school that I shied away from this habit. I started to hone in on my potential and who I thought I was. My new goal, instead of being the infamous people pleaser, was to become comfortable in my skin. It was a full metamorphosis — physical, emotional, and mental. I can definitely say I am not the same person I was those few years ago; I am much more proud to say the current me is who I’m meant to be. I’ve transformed into someone my family can be proud of. As my final year of high school comes to a close, I would like to thank Loughlin for being a life-changing experience for me. Without it, I would not have found the courage to be myself.

T

his past summer, Zora James ’18, Azizat Osinaike ’18, and Gia Walcott ’19 were chosen to participate in the summer three-week program, The Scales of Justice Academy at Fordham University. The purpose of this program is to provide girls from NYC an opportunity to experience law programs and lectures from judges, lawyers, and law school professors, and, to impart necessary life skills as they prepare for college and the professional world.

Gia Wolcott explains among the first lessons was an exercise in punctuality.

One of the many challenges of the Scales of Justice Academy was its insistence that girls be present every day of the threeweek program — and arrive on time.

The girls, determined to make a positive impression, did not disappoint. “As in the professional world, it is important to be on time and to stick to commitments,” the girls pointed out, and for senior Zora James, this even meant shuffling around a family vacation.

Back at Fordham University in New York, the students sat in on lectures delivered by practicing New York City attorneys.

They were most surprised at all of the various types of law programs that are available to them after graduation.

The liaison between Loughlin and The Scales of Justice program was facilitated

by Pamela Sloan ’73, a Bishop McDonnell graduate. Ms. Sloan recognizes that Loughlin girls today are no different from the Bishop McDonnell girls from the past.

Not only is Ms. Sloan on the Loughlin Board of Governors, and in support of The Scales program, but she has also helped to fully fund The Bishop McDonnell Scholarship Fund to support Loughlin girls.

o honor Br. Peter’s 90th birthday and his dedication to Lasallian education for 46 years (and counting) at Bishop Loughlin, the school and Gregory Burtles ’61 have established a Brother Baldwin Peter Bonventre, FSC Scholarship Fund. For the past 46 years, Br. Peter has dedicated his life mentoring students and providing pathways for young women and men to achieve their potential.

Those who were at Loughlin between 1954 and 1961 knew him as their English teacher or Vice-Principal. Between 1966 and 1971, Br. Peter was the Principal, and since 1985, a Guidance Counselor. He continues to touch hearts and positively impact the lives of many young men and women. Thomas J. Craig, MD, MPH ’55 remembers his own personal connection with Br. Peter during his early years at Loughlin when he was the editor of the Jamesonian — Br. Peter was the paper’s moderator.

“I fondly remember the gracious and elegant leadership he imparted to us.”

Br. Peter carries forward a faith and spirit that is able to touch the hearts of students and inspires them.

volunteered at countless alumni events doing whatever possible to ensure its success.

Bostinto ’72 has been there for his

alma mater time and time again. Loughlin has never left his head or his heart.

Drew is one of the youngest and first members of the Justinian Society — our Loughlin planned giving society. He explains why — “Loughlin has always been important to me. My close involvement probably explains why I signed up (Justinian Society) a long time ago.”

Drew is a small business owner and teaches part time at two area colleges.

“I always feel like I am back home at Loughlin.” Drew shares that his favorite moments are speaking with the students and learning more about them. “I always like when I hear Br. We all have a common bond that is Loughlin.” Drew has also assisted the Alumni Office on archival projects and continues to volunteer to this day. Alum like Drew have not forgotten the role Loughlin played in their lives — and for that, Loughlin is so grateful!

he 2017 Loughlin Council Luncheon, held in December, began with a Mass and followed by a luncheon in the Bishop Loughlin Library. Alumni reconnected with old friends and met Bishop Loughlin students who are involved in many extracurricular activities. Student speaker, Rose MolinaGonzalez ’18, spoke about her experiences at Loughlin and the student she is today — preparing to graduate and go to college.

At the luncheon current Board of Governors Chair and St. Augustine graduate Thomas Van Buskirk ’70 received the Lion Heart Award. “The Lionheart Award is presented to an alumnus or friend of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in recognition of their support of Lasallian education at Bishop Loughlin and whose civic contributions have made a positive difference in so many lives.” Congratulations Tom!

n May, the annual Athletic Hall of Fame was held honoring eight graduates for their contributions to the Bishop Loughlin athletic program. The school honored the following:

Shantile Blackburn ’05 Shantile, from East Flatbush, was one of the greatest female runners in school history and her records speak for themselves: five-time CHSAA City Champion, two-time Millrose Games 1600m Relay Champion, CHSAA Outstanding Track Athlete in the 2003 CHSAA Intersectionals for her performance in the 1500m and the 3200m relays, and a member of the record breaking 3200m Champions in the Hartford Invitational Track Meet. At the Hartford Invitational she was a champion in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 — she fondly remembers giving her mother the championship watch every year. Shantile accepted a full Track & Field scholarship to the University of Central Florida.

Olinka Crusoe ’05 Olinka, from Harlem, came to Loughlin from Cardinal Spellman High in the Bronx as a junior. On the track team she was the 2004 Indoor 55m Champion, a seven-time CHSAA Intersectional Champion, and a two-time (2004, 2005) Millrose Games CHSAA 1600m Relay Champion — retiring the permanent trophy. Amazingly in her career at Loughlin, she won 15 of 16 races on the Diocesan and CHSAA Intersectional Championship levels. Olinka received an athletic scholarship to the University of Central Florida where she continued to compete in Track and Field while studying education.

William Harris ’64 Bill came to Bishop Loughlin from Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Brooklyn.

He competed for the Lions water polo and swimming teams and was voted to the AllScholastic, All-American Water Polo Team in 1963 and 1964. He was a member of the Loughlin team that won the 1964 AAU Jr. National Championship. The team was coached by the legendary Harry Benvenuto and defeated several teams including West Point and a New York Athletic Club Team.

Terrance Watkins ’00 From Far Rockaway, Queens, Terrance was a three-year Varsity Basketball player (1997 to 2000). A 1,000 point career scorer, he was listed in the USA Today “New York State Top Players” his senior year. As a junior, he made the Long Island Newsday 1st Team All-Brooklyn Team. He was a NY Daily News All City Selection, a CHSAA Coaches All Diocesan 1st Team selection in 1999 and 2000, and a New York Post All-City Selection in 2000.

Lance Smith ’87 From New Bedford Catholic Junior High School in Brooklyn, Lance immediately starred on the Track & Field team with a Frosh CHSAA Individual City Championship in the 800m. As a senior at the National Indoor meet at Yale University, he was a member of the 3200m relay team and the Distance Medley Relay that won gold and the honor of being Number One in the nation. Lance was an Outdoor CHSAA City Champion in the triple jump and a part of the 3200m Relay Championship team in the Millrose Games which allowed the Lions to retire the prestigious George T. Eastment Trophy.

Martin Mealey ’47 Martin, from Elmhurst, Queens, ran Track and Cross Country during Loughlin’s glory years during the 1940s under legendary coach George Eastment. In an article of the May 14, 1945 issue of Life magazine Bishop

Loughlin was referred to as “the Notre Dame of High School Track”.

Marty was a prolific and consistent scorer over his entire career at Loughlin garnering over 75 medals and trophies. He was the co-captain of the undefeated 1946 Cross Country championship team and on the 1944 and 1945 CHSAA championship teams along with the Private High School Championships and the Eastern States Championships. He scored for the Cross Country team every meet in 1944 and 1945 before injury hampered his senior year season. Marty’s indoor and outdoor careers were equally impressive. A member of the winning two-mile relay teams that won both the 1945 CHSAA Indoor and Outdoor CHSAA Championships and the National Championships, Marty also ran the 880m and the 1000m as an individual.

In 1947, Marty won the 1000m in the NYAC Championships, setting the meet and Loughlin record.

Jeanette Toney ’05 From Brownsville, Brooklyn, Jeanette competed in four Varsity sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Softball, and Track & Field.

She is one of the best all-around female scholar-athletes in Loughlin’s history. As a junior she won the Br. James Bonilla Scholar-Athlete Award and as a senior, the Nugent Brothers Award for athletics, scholarship, and character. She was the 2005 Salutatorian.

James Dorney James was born in Brooklyn and educated at St. Ephrem’s Parish in Bay Ridge Brooklyn (still living there), attended Brooklyn Prep, received his undergraduate degree from St. Francis of Brooklyn, and worked for 41 years at Bishop Loughlin (yes, Brooklyn). The Brooklyn Dodgers

“dem bums” may have left Brooklyn but Jim Dorney is steadfast.

Jim served at Bishop Loughlin from 1973 till 2014 as a teacher, dean, coach, Athletic Director, and especially as an ardent and loyal supporter of all of the athletic teams during his 41 years of faithful service.

Jim was the freshman basketball coach for four seasons, the girls Varsity basketball coach for one season, the Varsity baseball coach for four seasons, and the Athletic Director (of both boys and girls) for three years — even filling in here or there as a coach when needed.

Jim is especially proud of his long tenure rooting on the Loughlin Lions and attending various events.

His attendance record: 33 years of Loughlin Alumni games, 38 years of Manhattan College XC Meets, 38 years of Loughlin Games (Track), 161 meets of Intersectional XC, Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships, five Penn Relays, 21 Hall of Fame Dinners, nine years on the on Hall of Fame committee, 16 years as the chair of the Faculty Committee for Bonilla and Nugent Bros Awards, and 40 years at the Varsity All Sports Award Banquet.

Jim has run in the 1980 and 1990 NYC Marathon and Half-Marathons in all five Boroughs. In 2000, he was the recipient of the 88th Precinct Dedication to Community Award and in 2014 he received the prestigious Loughlin’s Lionheart Award. Of all his supporting and coaching and attending, Jim might be proudest of beating Molloy, a perennial soccer power, for Loughlin’s only soccer playoff win.

Coach Dorney was filling in for the absent Loughlin coach and pulled off one of the biggest upsets in CHSAA soccer.

D

uring the past two decades Ed Bowes ’60 has been a recipient of numerous awards that celebrated his achievements as an athlete and/or coach of Track and Field. This year’s Lionheart Award was his most emotional though.

As a student, Ed was well known for his athletic abilities. He was involved in intramurals and was an outstanding cross country and track athlete. Under the leadership of Bill Miles, the Loughlin track team earned the CHSAA Championships in 1959 in both indoor and outdoor track, and an indoor championship in 1960.

Bowes continued to run track at Manhattan College. After graduation Bill Miles recruited Ed in 1964 to work in the Business department at Bishop Loughlin and to be an assistant track coach; he later became the third head track coach in the school’s history.

Over 39 years, Bowes won multiple CHSAA Championships as a coach and more than 31 athletes he coached were inducted into the Loughlin Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ed Bowes has spent more than 40 years educating students and helping them develop into successful athletes and students.

At the numerous Hall of Fame inductions Ed’s remarks were, for the most part, humorous and entertaining. Consequently, over the years the audience had come to expect to be entertained. At this year’s Lionheart Award ceremony the audience including family, friends, colleagues, BLMHS staff, and former Track and Field athletes expected the same. What they witnessed instead were remarks filled with emotion — this award was an acknowledgement of who he is as a person and what he most values — loyalty, comradery, friendship, generosity, and fearless individualism.

Ed’s remarks reflected his appreciation for having been able and allowed to promote his pride for Bishop Loughlin — his alma mater, his TRACK & FIELD home where he keeps alive the memories of those who influenced his life and career choices — particularly his loyal friend Tyrone Pannell and legendary track and field coaches George Eastment and Bill Miles.

In October Bishop Loughlin celebrated its annual alumni reunion. Elizabeth Inalegwu ’19 was asked to speak about her own personal experiences at Loughlin and her love and appreciation for the school. She also explained to the alumni how their contributions create a wide variety of opportunities for the students in the school — including her.

Jonathan Rodriguez ’18 (pictured here, far left) was the student speaker at the 2017 St. Augustine reunion. He says, “It was a wonderful experience and a great honor. I met many people, learned about their successes, and made some great connections. Three of the St. Augustine alumni were also alumni of one of the colleges that I want to attend, Marist College. I was able to exchange emails and contact them after the reunion about applying.

I also met many other people with fascinating background stories. Many of the alumni are role models for me because I saw what they have done with their lives. I want to work hard in life to achieve those same successes. I was told that one of the most important things you can do in life is make connections. I agree. Attending the reunion also gave me a chance to say thank you to some of the people that funded many scholarships for students like me. I was also able to show them that their money was not going to waste — I plan on making the most out of my Loughlin education and one day help another Loughlinite!”

ane and I were interested in making an estate gift to Loughlin for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, it is a long time interest of ours to help financially disadvantaged children receive a quality education. We were blessed that our parents were able to send us to Bishop McDonnell and Bishop Loughlin — at a time when they were struggling to send three children to parochial schools. It was a lesson in sacrifice we have never forgotten.

Third, Loughlin embodies a quality high school offering — not only a college preparatory education, but an environment that nourishes the student in a wholistic manner.

Second, our own experiences at these two wonderful schools created a natural opportunity to realize our interest in supporting the ambitions and dreams of young women and men.

Attending a Loughlin graduation ceremony cemented our desire to establish a legacy gift. The extraordinary scholastic achievement confirmed our anecdotal

TAKE ADVANTAGE of TAX SAVINGS with YOUR IRA As far as tax savers go, this one is simple. Use Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) to maximize the new higher standard deduction.

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity like Loughlin. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met.

In addition to the benefits of giving to charity, a QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact to certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare.

THE NEW STANDARD DEDUCTION I The new law doubles the standard deduction to $12,000 per person and $24,000 per couple. The QCD provision allowing direct rollovers from an IRA to a charity has been a permanent provision in the tax law since 2015. The QCD can effectively expand the increased standard deduction amounts and result in big tax savings.

QCDs were not changed under the new law but their impact has changed.

QCDs have been made more valuable than ever and everyone who qualifies should be making their donations using them.

Many alum may not have enough charitable, medical, or other remaining deductions to itemize, and will likely use the standard deduction. But that amount can be increased. The QCD can actually add to the standard deduction resulting, in effect, in getting the standard deduction plus the charitable deduction.

Countless students have expanded their horizons, realized their potential, and achieved dreams as a result of the scholarship support provided to them by our generous benefactors. De La Salle providing an education that is affordable to the students entrusted to us. Growing our Endowed and Named Scholarship Program is critical to continue our mission. Our scholarship supporters build a bridge between big dreams and real-life opportunities enabling the school to provide merit-based scholarship and financial aid of 1.3 million dollars annually to students who would not be able to afford a Loughlin education.

a gift to our existing endowed scholarship funds, invest in the general scholarship pool, or create a new endowment or named scholarship. Bishop Loughlin considers our benefactors to be a major investor and an integral part of our family, supporting and nurturing scholarship recipients. ANNUAL REPORTING

With all endowed and named scholarships, donors are able to set awarding criteria preference for their scholarship recipients, which may be based on merit, financial need, and grade point average (etc).

Our scholarship benefactors will receive annual reports with information on their scholarship recipients and a financial performance report.

CONNECTING WITH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Throughout the year, donors have the opportunity to interact with recipients at various events and also receive personal correspondence from their students.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE I The QCD only applies to IRA owners and beneficiaries who are 70 ½ or older. The donation must be directly transferred from the IRA to the charity and nothing can be received in return for the donation. Gifts to Donor Advised Funds or private foundations do not qualify.

A tax deduction for the contribution cannot be taken, but the amount transferred from the IRA is excluded from income and it counts toward the RMD (required minimum distribution).

Excluding that amount from income is a better tax benefit than receiving a tax deduction, because it keeps income lower. This allows for more tax benefits, resulting in a lower tax.

A GENEROUS LOUGHLIN ALUM RECENTLY PROVIDED THE FOLLOWING ANECDOTE I My Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) last year was approximately $100,000. I elected to take $25,000 as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). I filled out a separate form for a distribution of $25,000 and used the option

of a check made payable to Bishop Loughlin Memorial HS. The check was mailed to my home address and I then sent it to Loughlin. I subsequently filled out a second form for $75K, had taxes withheld, and deposited the net to my brokerage account.

In doing my taxes, the $100K was recorded as a 1099R distribution. In doing my Turbo Tax return, I was asked if any of the distribution was transferred to a qualified charitable organization. The response was “yes.” My Federal 1040 shows the total distribution of $100,000 on line 15a and a taxable amount of $75,000 on line 15b with “QCD” typed in on line 15b.

The effect was that my AGI was less by $25K, my taxes went down by $7,120, and I did not move into the next level of AGI for Medicare Premium determination.

That savings was another $2,400 in 2018 premium. Total savings of $9,520 because of my $25,000 gift to Loughlin.
