We are pleased to bring you this edition of “The Clermont.” Loughlin continues to challenge and nurture students intellectually, spiritually and physically.

I hope you have been able to review some of the updates we send throughout the year.

If so, you have seen postings on our strong STEM program; particularly in Biomedical Science. The Engineering section is up and running and the plan is to grow those offerings over the next two years. We added a Computer Applications course (with a focus on coding/programming) which will lead to additional Advanced Placement courses in this area.

Our Fall sports teams made the playoffs, setting us up for an exciting Winter season.

By the time you read this, we will have sponsored the 66th Loughlin Games, now hosted at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island. Many will fondly remember our years at the Armory on 168th Street (a wooden track for some!).

As you look through “The Clermont,” please note an article on our revitalized Campus Ministry program. Together with the Lasallian Youth group, these students animate our community to be alive in Christ. They learn the value of retreats in fostering a relationship with God, service as a work of mercy, and leadership as service to others, rather than self-aggrandizement.

Loughlin is blessed by the presence of a Lasallian volunteer who gives witness to these values.

STEM education has been strongly promoted at Loughlin and enthusiastically embraced by students. You will read how the department is building a bridge program with St. John’s University that will allow students to work in the university setting.

Read about our energetic and creative Social Studies Department, which works hard to engage students in the study of history.

Members of this department also work to flame student interest in civics. Partnering with Jewish and other Lasallian schools, our students experience the importance of participating in civic life for the good of the entire community.

I hope you enjoy reading about our student athletes, our recent graduates and our not so recent graduates. All together, they are an impressive crew - much like you! At the Golf Outing, the St. Augustine and Loughlin Reunions (the Bishops’ alumnae are covered in the “Memorial”) and the John Loughlin Council Luncheon, we gather folks who give a powerful testimony to the enduring impact of Catholic education. We are grateful for their commitment to sustain that choice for a values-rich educational experience.

What does it mean to live the Lasallian Mission?

What does it mean to live the LaSallian Mission, celebrating with zeal? Hundreds of men and women gathered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 21st to the 23rd, to reflect upon what this means and how this applies to their own spiritual lives and the lives they share in common in Community and in Association.

I had the opportunity to participate in this conference, along with four other Bishop Loughlin Faculty; three of whom are still working in Ministry there: Angela Proce, Michael Foley and Barbara Foley. Two of us have retired from the Ministry and are continuing with the Mission as Legacy Lasallians; Marianne Sheehan and myself, Anna Tufano.

Each of these gifted speakers generated discussions among the participants, both in large and small groups. Questions and answers were lively and inspiring.

This year’s conference began with a special opening celebration, featuring music and dance performances by students from local Lasallian schools. Other attendees of the conference were members of the Seventh World Congress of the Association of Lasallian Alumni (UMAEL) creating a larger sense of Lasallian Community.

This year celebrates the 300th Anniversary of St. LaSallle’s death. Also celebrated was the 30th Anniversary of Lasallian Volunteers (LV), a program from which Bishop Loughlin MHS has had the benefit of the services of young men and women who have committed to the Lasallian Mission and the 10th Anniversary of DENA (District of North America).

It encourages me to continue with the LaSallian Mission beyond the classroom and walls of Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, a truly LaSallian institution, in my reaching out to others in service.

In coming back from the years since I’ve retired from Loughlin, I am reminded by the words, “ENTER TO LEARN, LEAVE TO SERVE”. In my legacy, I will continue to serve as a give back for all that I’ve been given!

Loughlin Civic Spirit

My name is Hanny Lizbeth Echeverria and I am a student at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. I am a part of the Civic Spirit Student Delegates program. This program is a unique year-long fellowship with a group of student ambassadors from across the Civic Spirit network. Civic Spirit is a cross-partisan, national nonprofit organization launched in 2017, to equip young people to understand their rights, roles, and responsibilities and strengthen their ability to engage with people from different backgrounds, appreciate multiple perspectives, and foster civic discourse. With 15+ chapters across the country, this organization is building a movement of young people committed to building bridges through deliberative dialogue across various divides.

I first learned about Civic Spirit club during my sophomore year at Bishop Loughlin. It was a club I was immediately attracted to when I first heard about it through my AP Global teacher. After our first meeting, I was completely committed and knew it was something I wanted to pursue.

We would talk about projects that we would conduct, aimed to bring unity and help everyone understand their roles and civic rights. Civic Spirit is a club that I strongly recommend to any student in Loughlin. It opens great opportunities that you least expect it would.

In August of summer 2019, I was given the opportunity to go to the Mayor’s office, in front of City Hall, and give a brief presentation on what Civic Spirit represents. We displayed a community service program that we all designed.

It was based on 5 weeks of substantive research, brainstorming, team building, collaboration, and careful preparation by the students I was working with. The NYC Service government staff was amazed by our presentation. They were inspired by the mission of Civic Spirit and frequently stated that they learned insights from our presentation that they would implement right away. They were even eager to continue partnering with Civic Spirit on service-oriented work. We ended our visit with a historic tour of NYC’s City Hall. We absolutely enjoyed it and everything we learned from the monumental building from the early 1800’s.

Council Luncheon

Biomed Bridge Program

On Wednesday, December 11th, Ms. Randall and a group of HBS Biomed students, accompanied by Ms. Lamarque and Mr. Santiago, traveled to St. John’s University as part of our new Biomed Bridge Program. Having completed a module on the human eye at Loughlin, the students participated in a set of college-level extension activities at St. John’s. Led by Dr. Gregory Fernandez and her colleague, Dr. Beysolow, the students learned how to perform a variety of eye exams, including how to view the inner eye using an ophthalmoscope. Two St. John’s PA students provided support and shared insight into their experiences with the Physician’s Assistant Program. Our students also learned how to assess for various eye disorders, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. Lastly, the visit included a tour of advanced medical simulation lab equipment, which will be used for upcoming activities. It was a great start to our new Biomed partnership with St. John’s!

Campus Ministry and Lasallian Youth The essence of student spirituality at Bishop Loughlin is clearly discovered when one looks at the school’s Campus Ministry program and Lasallian Youth group. Following in the footsteps of the founder of the Institute, St. John Baptist de La Salle, students aspire to improve their understanding of Faith, Community, and Service every day at Loughlin. Campus Ministry offers many opportunities for this to happen.

Faith and Spirituality are enriched through school-wide Masses, celebrated throughout the year, at Queen of All Saints Roman Catholic Church. Prayer services also take place on many occasions between September and June. Campus Ministry and the Language Arts, other than English, work together for the Dia de los Muertos/All Souls prayer service in early November. Students create artwork and written pieces commemorating those they have lost. During the season of Advent, horns can be heard in the first floor corridor playing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” as students gather to pray in preparation for the birth of our Savior. Our beautiful chapel is used for prayer services, often created entirely by our Lasallian Youth Group, before and after school several times each year. These prayer services allow both faculty and students to share their prayer life together.

The Community Service program is alive and well at Bishop Loughlin. Students are given the opportunity to serve within the school, in the nearby neighborhood, and throughout the world. The Homework Center, located in the library after school, is a place where students can help other students who are struggling academically.

Mike Foley, Campus Minister

Outside of Loughlin, students can help in a variety of ways. Raking leaves and planting trees at Fort Greene Park teaches students the importance of taking care of our environment. At the Food Bank of New Jersey, our students help to pack thousands of meals for low-income families, who would not survive without them. The Loughlin Lasallian Youth Group is always ready to serve others during the holidays. We volunteer at the Prospect Park Halloween Fair by helping children with costumes, face-painting, and dressing as ghosts and ghouls for the Scary Halloween Walk through the Woods. We show our deep appreciation for all that we have in our lives by helping community members who struggle to feed their families during Thanksgiving season. Loughlin students can be found working at Columbia University with “Street Gourmet,” an organization that serves the hungry and homeless in Harlem. We begin preparing meals on Wednesday and work through the night to feed hundreds of people on Thanksgiving Day. Although exhausted, the students are deeply enriched by this special opportunity to serve as Jesus did.

A favorite service project of the students is our trip to Manhattan for “Random Acts of Kindness.” We begin the service by making sandwiches for the homeless. Students fill each lunch bag with a sandwich, a water bottle, and a piece of fruit. They also take the time to decorate each bag with colorful pictures and inspirational messages. Upon arrival in the city, we begin to look for opportunities to help whomever we can. Loughlin students can be seen holding doors, helping to carry strollers up subway

stairs, and offering food to the hungry. At the conclusion of the service project, we come together to share our feelings about the event and to pray for the less fortunate. Our students truly shine at the annual Brooklyn Hospital Holiday Party for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit. Many of these young patients have spent their entire lives in and out of the hospital dealing with serious health issues. The holiday party offers an opportunity to spend time together celebrating the gift of family and friends. The pediatric patients and the Loughlin students’ hearts are enriched as they celebrate the holiday with food, games, and of course; a visit from Santa. Throughout the year, Loughlin student volunteers can also be found at nursing homes, elementary schools, and soup kitchens, making a difference in the lives of community members.

Summertime provides the opportunity to serve outside of our home in Brooklyn. For the past 22 years, Loughlin has sent student representatives to the annual Lasallian Youth Summer Assembly, a gathering of students from Lasallian schools located throughout the east coast. The LYSA has taken place in Philadelphia, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Albany, and many other places. Our teenage Lasallians love these trips because they are given the chance to serve with students from many different places, all of whom share the same Lasallian values. Bishop Loughlin also offers the opportunity for “special service trips.” This past summer, Loughlinites traveled to Puerto Rico to assist the community after the devastating hurricanes of the previous year. Current Spanish teacher, Jennifer Baduy; Loughlin alum, Jeannie Guzman (class of 2006); and Campus Minister, Mike Foley, joined a group of Loughlin juniors to work with “World Central Kitchen” to cook and deliver food to families who lost their homes during the hurricanes. Our students truly live up to the Loughlin motto, “Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve.”

The Twinning Program of the Lasallian Schools pairs schools in the U.S.A. with schools in Africa. For the past twenty years, Bishop Loughlin has been twinned with St. Mary’s Boys Secondary School in Nyeri, Kenya. The students who attend St. Mary’s come from extremely low-income families. Loughlin students and faculty generously donate money to St. Mary’s which helps with tuition, food, and school supplies. Loughlin leads all schools in twinning donations, contributing between $15,000 and $20,000 annually.

Some examples of fund-raisers for St. Mary’s are “Out of Uniform” Days, basketball shooting competitions, bake sales, and the “Lenten Penny Wars.” Many Loughlin students do not have great financial resources, yet they are willing to generously donate to help others.

This spirit of selfless giving is what Loughlin is truly all about.

Graduates of Bishop Loughlin frequently return to visit their old school. When asked what they remember about their time at Loughlin, the comment most often heard is “it was like family here”. Building a caring, faith-filled, and loving community is critical to the mission of Campus Ministry. This happens in many different ways. The Campus Ministry office, located in the back of the student cafeteria, is open all day long as a place where students can come to enjoy social time with friends, study for upcoming tests, or simply have some quiet time. Every Tuesday, we have “Talk It Out Tuesday,” where students sit in a circle and discuss a topic of interest. This serves as a great way for students to build bonds with each other as they share and listen. On Thursdays, we dim the lights for “Theatre Thursday.” Movies and short films are shown during the lunch periods, while theatre-style hot, buttered popcorn is served.

We celebrate the newest members of our community every Friday with “Freshman Friday.” During freshman lunch, only freshmen are permitted to enter the Campus Ministry office, where they find snacks and games awaiting them. Every Thursday morning, our Lasallian Youth Group meets to build community through icebreakers and discussions. They also organize roller-skating trips, movie trips, and game days. All of this helps to create the “feeling of family” that we love at Loughlin.

If you say the word “Goshen” to most any Loughlin alum, a smile will emerge quickly. Some of our students’ best memories take place at “The Empowerment Center” in Goshen, New York, the site of the powerfully spiritual Loughlin weekend retreats. The retreat house is surrounded by green fields, a beautiful pond, and a babbling brook.

But the real beauty takes place inside the Center. Upon entering the house, one immediately feels the warmth of home. Students are given the opportunity to understand who they are, to reflect upon where they have come from, and to discover how they are being called by God. Through ice-breakers, team-building exercises, witness talks, and small group discussions, students form deep bonds with one another, while exploring their relationship with God. The retreat experience is intense, meaningful, and unforgettable. Once again, the word “family” comes to mind when Loughlin students and alums think of our amazing retreat program.

Faith, Service, and Community - these are more than just words at Bishop Loughlin. They are the building blocks to creating true Christian leaders; leaders who, like Christ, are willing to put others before themselves in the hope of creating a better world. The goal of Campus Ministry and Lasallian Youth at Bishop Loughlin is to educate and nurture our young leaders so that every one of them will truly “Enter to Learn, and Leave to Serve.”

My name is Aldontae Guess and I am a first year Lasallian Volunteer serving at Bishop Loughlin this year. In the office of Campus Ministry these days there is so much happening. Ever since I started, there has been a great deal of different activities, service opportunities, and retreats that have been occurring. Just recently, Bishop Loughlin had its Kairos retreat for the first time in a while for juniors and seniors. It was a great deal of hard work and dedication for students and adults.

However, seeing it come together especially since I had the Kairos experience myself in high school, was a such a joy.

Also happening in Campus Ministry are many service events.

One such event took place on Saturday November 23rd, when a group of seven students, of all the grade levels, had the chance to assist in the family volunteer day associated with Catholic Charities.

Our students made some holiday cards and helped make kits for men, women, and children in need. Around the Christmas/New Year Season, Campus Ministry also decorated the office and the surrounding area to make our second annual Christmas village.

In addition, we continue to have our weekly events such as Theater Thursdays when we put a movie on for the students and distributed popcorn for them during their lunch periods. On Talk it Out Tuesdays, we get the chance to know our students better, and have some great conversation.

The Campus Ministry Office is so full of events and other things for our students. The school year is halfway over with much more to come!

Lasallian Volunteer Lasallian Volunteers is a Long – Term Volunteer Program rooted in the Lasallian Catholic Tradition. Being a Lasallian Volunteer means working at a ministry in connection and/or connected with the Lasallian mission. Volunteers serve in different capacities such as but not limited to, teaching, after school program support, campus ministry and student life, tutoring, etc. Lasallian Volunteers also live in community with a group of the De LaSalle Brothers and some volunteers who may be at the same site or sites in the vicinity and are part of the community exercises (e.g. prayer, community meals, community responsibilities, community outings etc.) Volunteers also have formation and professional development with the staff of Lasallian Volunteers program throughout their service year(s) as well. Q&A with the Social Studies Department How has your department changed / evolved over the years?

What guest speakers have you had come and speak to the students?

As a department, we are much more active in terms of participating in after school activities and servicing the Loughlin community with educational events. We are involved in Civic Spirit, Holocaust Podcast, Black History Month Assembly, Hispanic culture Month, softball, weight training, Anime, Civil War Re-enactment, Choices and Consequences (DA presentation on consequences of drunk driving), Cops & Teens Assembly for Freshmen, homework help, and summer school and Head Start.

Guest teachers, Holocaust speakers, and the variety of hosts for our assemblies and events.

Describe the Social Studies curriculum at Loughlin and how it incorporates Lasallian principles?

Does your department offer any resources to juniors and seniors in the college application process?

Yes, we contribute to the uplift of seniors by writing recommendations and several of the assemblies help seniors avoid the pitfalls of young adulthood which can derail their college careers (ex. Choices & Consequences, Cops and Teens).

How do you guide students to apply what is taught in The curriculum itself does not incorporate the Lasallian principles class to real world situations? as much as the teachers incorporate Lasallian traditions in their classroom. Senior teachers promote the idea of servicing your community. For example, the African-American class promotes leadership skills such as service, personal growth and sacrificing for your community. Many of us also pray before class, and we service our students with patience and love. We are an experienced group that exchange ideas to maintain excellent standards, and our door is open to any student requiring extra help.

Freshmen: Global I & AP World I Sophomores: Global II & AP World II Juniors: U.S. History & A.P. U.S. History Seniors: African-American studies, Holocaust, Participation in Government, Law & Economics

a. Civic Spirit: Helps students understand how to work with others and navigate the bureaucracy of local government in order to achieve a particular goal b. Cops & Teens Assembly: teaches students about teen pitfalls and how to avoid them (ex. Gangs drugs etc.) c. Senior classes: Participation in government, law and economics helps students understand the basics in the three mentioned areas and how to navigate real world situations.

For example, Law is taught as “street law,” in order to give students a practical understanding of the positives and negatives of our justice system and how it affects us on a daily basis. Moreover, Participation in Government helps students understand the pro-active aspects of Democracy and the meaning of “we the people”.

On Saturday December 7th, at The Staten Island Relays, which was held at The Ocean Breeze Sports Complex our Lions ran some impressive times and came home with three meet records, twenty seven medals, sixteen gold, five sliver & six bronze

On Saturday December 21st and on Sunday December 22nd, at The 66th Annual Bishop Loughlin Games, the Track & Field Lions came home with a 2nd Place Girls Team Trophy, two team plaques, two meet records, 35 medals: 15 gold, 5 sliver and 15 bronze

The Varsity Girls Distance Medley Relay set a new meet record with a time of 13:15.9

Freshmen Anissa Moore came in 1st place in the 300 meters.

The team consist of Senior Adia Palmer, Senior Jemera Pantoon-Whitehead, Junior Jourdan Garnett and Junior Madison McDonald.

The Varsity Girls Sprint Medley Relay came in 1st place and set a new meet record with a time of 4:17.9. The team consist of Freshmen Anissa Moore, Senior Brianna White, Junior Alanni Cannon and Senior Adia Palmer.

Sophomore Brinesha Derrick-Bain came in 1st place in the 55 meter hurdles The Varsity Girls 4x4 defended their title and were award the Ed Bowles 4x4 meter plaque for the second consecutive year.

The team consists of freshmen Anissa Moore, senior Brianna White, sophomore Brinesha Derrick-Bain and senior Adia Palmer.

The Freshmen Boys Distance Medley Relay set a new meet record with a time of 8:25. The team consists of N’Namdi Porter, Maasai Samuel, Wesley Noble Jr and Jelani Johnson.

The Freshmen Boys Sprint Medley Relay came in 1st place and set a new meet record with a time of 3:47.1. The team consists of N’Namdi Porter, Wesley Noble Jr, Aaron Brown and Jelani Johnson.

Cross Country

Junior Nyerere Hill came cross the finish line first in The Varsity Boys Championship B race with a time of 14:40. He also ran a personal best time of 14:33 in the 2.5 and 17:20 in the 5K Senior Malique Williams ran a personal best time of 15:01 in the 2.5 and 17:20 in the 5K Varsity Girls Three of our Lady Lions received The 2019 CHSAA All League Cross Country Award Senior Adia Palmer, Junior Jourdan Garnett and Junior Madison McDonald The varsity girls team came in 3rd place in the Brooklyn/ Queens Championship Freshmen Boys The freshmen boys came in 1st place at The NYC Cross Country Mayor’s Cup Meet. The team is Jelani Johnson, N’Namdi Porter, Aaron Brown, Wesley Noble Jr, Massai Samuel, Tyler Henry and Ryan Williams.

Freshmen Boys On Sunday December 22, the freshmen 4x4 came in 1st place and set a new meet record. The team consists of N’Nandi Porter, Jelani Johnson, Aaron Brown and Wesley Noble Jr. Wesley Noble Jr came in 1st place in the Freshmen 300 meters and set a new meet record.

Aaron Brown came in 1st place in the freshmen 55 meter hurdles Jelani Johnson came in 1st place in the freshmen 1000 meter race N’Namdi came in 1st place in the freshmen 600 meters.

Jason Lukito came in 1st place in the high jump.

Freshmen Tyler Henry came in 2nd place in the long jump.

Varsity Boys Varsity Boys 4x8 came in 3rd place. The team consists of freshmen Jelani Johnson, senior Malique Williams, junior Nyerere Hill and senior Joshua Jennings.

The varsity boys 4x4 came in 4th place. The team consists of Freshmen N’Nandi Porter, Senior Malique Williams and Senior Joshua Jennings The varsity girls and boys 4x2 and 4x8 teams both qualified at The CHSAA George T Eastment Trials.

Meet Adia, Malique, and Joshua Adia Palmer ’20

In the beginning of the outdoor season, my junior year, I was entirely overwhelmed because I felt that I was not where I needed to be performance wise, so that in the fall of 2019, I could be recruited by college coaches.

The stress and anxiety that I was feeling took a toll on my body physically and mentally, to the point where I was not only struggling as an athlete but also as a student. Weeks before my race, I was motivated to perform at my best. I placed second that day and I never forgot the words my uncle told me. He said, “This is only one of many victories if you continue to work hard.”

Since that race I was inspired to see where this sport would take me and it sparked growth in me as an upcoming athlete and as a student.

into me. Coach recommended that I take a few days off to reflect on what further actions I wanted to take in terms of finishing the season. But I did not need to take any time off. I told her, “coach, I’ve come too far to give up now and I am ready to do whatever it takes to be the best I can be.” Moving forward, I was blessed to win the 400m at cities, become a finalist in the hurdles at states, and lead off a victorious 4x4 m relay to become Division 2 champions and Federation finalist.

Going into my senior year, I started a vision board where I made a checklist of all the goals I have for myself for the 20192020 school year and season.

“Beyond Loughlin” Bishop Loughlin has allowed me the opportunity to better myself as a student athlete. All the challenges I’ve faced have only pushed and motivated me to be better.

The Bishop Loughlin Track Team has become a second family to me. Being surrounded by so many student athletes who share the same goals and ambitions as I, inspires me to work harder to reach my goals. The support from my coaches and all the alumni means a lot to me.

Malique Williams ’20

Malique transferred to Bishop Loughlin during his sophomore year of high school.

There, he enrolled in Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York. Boys Hope Girls Hope is a rigorous college-access residential program.

In the program, Malique participated in weekly social justice programs, talking about societal issues like gentrification and redlining, and book club discussions. He was also provided with tutors and had the opportunity to go on excursions to events such as NBA games at the Barclays Center.

“I feel like this program really brought the best out of me, rounding out my overall character.” Malique is also a student prefect, a role of leadership. In this position, he mentors and advocates for his fellow scholars and sets up activities with BHGH staff and other student prefects. “BHGH provided me with a brotherhood that helped me to create lifetime friends. It’s a place filled with good vibes and I could trust everyone here,” he said. BHGH is included with scholars who have over an 85% GPA, having 100% of their scholars graduate on time and enrolling in 4-year institutions. The scholars also live in the residential building from Sunday night until Friday afternoon during the school week.

Through BHGH, Malique was enrolled in an eight week internship known as the Insurance Federation of New York (IFNY).

There, he learned about various financial sectors and insurance companies in the tri-state area. He toured facilities, met a

Joshua Jennings ’20

Born in Jamaica, New York, Joshua began studying music in 7th Grade at Catherine and Count Basie Middle School. While in seventh grade Joshua started studying music with Grammy award nominee Trumpet Player Waldron Ricks. Ricks mentored Joshua through the 7th grade. He helped Joshua to get into the Jazz at Lincoln Center Middle School Program. During this program, Joshua was taught every Wednesday by six time Grammy award winner, Jim Seeley. Joshua has continued into the High School Jazz program at Jazz At Lincoln Center. After finishing the program, Joshua looks forward to continuing to practice and

In his junior year, as a member of the National Honor Society, Malique traveled to different colleges and to participate in different community services.

In addition to being part of Boys Hope Girls Hope, Malique is also part of Bishop Loughlin’s track team. Malique first started running track in middle school with his track club, “V-tesse Track Club”.

While there, he ran and developed his skills, becoming a better athlete and also earning a few Long Island youth records in the process. During his sophomore year, he was CHSAA sophomore

Joshua has played at 4 All-City Festivals, 3 Jazz Festivals, the Savannah Music Festival, the Caramoor Jazz Festival in Caramoor, New York, and the John Coltrane Jazz Festival.

He has also been selected

by NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) to be on the alternate list for the All- State Festival, which ranks him as one of the top high school trumpeters in the state. Now Joshua is studying with 2017 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Solo Competition winner, Tony Glausi.

One of his favorite memories was winning his section at the world-renowned Penn Relays, where he and his teammates received a plaque for winning their section heat. “That was one of my most intense races that year. I was the youngest person on that relay team and the anchor leg.

I had a lot of pressure on me, but managed to do good for the team.” He was also Loughlin’s Track and Field MVP. Malique said, “ I made the most out of my three years at Loughlin, creating both change and lifelong friends along the way. Transferring to Bishop Loughlin was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Boys Hope Girls Hope gave me the support I needed to get through high school and taught me a lot that you don’t usually learn in a regular high school curriculum.

I loved running on the track team, representing our colors, purple and gold. I did my best to make Loughlin great, and I know that after I graduate, both the school and BHGH would become even better.”

In addition to playing music, Joshua also runs Track and Field for the school. He started running track at the age of 4 under the tutelage of the Metro Eagles out of Laurelton, Queens.

Throughout the years he has run many Junior Olympic meets within the United States. Joshua’s main events of focus are the 800 meter run and the 400 meter hurdles. Since coming to Loughlin, Joshua has dropped 17 seconds in the 800 meter run and 15 seconds in the 400 meter hurdles. His current personal bests respectively, are 2:05.25 and 57.97. He plans to go to national relays with the help of his other Metro Eagle teammates and rivals from other clubs. His favorite part about being on the Loughlin track team is how all his rivals, from other club teams that he used to run against, can all come together to meet a common goal as Loughlinites.

Loughlin Lady Lions 2019-2020 are coached by Phinnigan Edwards. This will be year 3 together as a team, and everything is beginning to fall into place. After ending a difficult season last year, 4-7, we’ve started off this year on fire with an 3-0 record. Our team recently got the opportunity to collaborate with women’s Footlocker. We modeled new clothing and sneakers. We also got the opportunity to meet with 3 inspiring women: Taylor Rooks, Cassy Athena and Chevy Marie. It was a wonderful experience, where they shared encouraging advice. This year we are definitely coming strong, “ It’s our season!”

Growing up in Staten Island, my exposure to basketball was different. I was tall for my age as I played AAU at just 9 years old. My passion for basketball has grown significantly since then.

Leaving 8th grade, I knew I wanted to come to Loughlin, in Brooklyn. The transition from Staten Island to Brooklyn was big! I was no longer the tallest player. I was no longer the leading scorer.

However, I didn’t let that break me. I continued to play the game. I accepted my role. Any and every time my number is called, I’m ready to go! I average around 2-5 pts, 9-10 rebounds and 2 assists a game. I am Naheema Walker, honor student, 5’7 senior varsity Basketball player!

BLMHS Baseball Lion’s Best Record Since 1954

The baseball team is one of many Loughlin sports teams that excelled in 2019. Here are some of the highlights the baseball team achieved throughout their season.

Loughlin’s 2018-2019 season record was the best record since 1954. The team’s record this year was fifteen wins and five losses. During the season we had a winning streak of seven games, which was one of many reasons we made it to the city championship.

In the championship game, we went head to head with Christ the King, whose record was twenty wins and no losses. This made them the number one team in the league.

Unfortunately for us, we were defeated in our championship game, where we fought our hardest and put our all into the game. Even though we did not win we still made history at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School being the first team in Sixty five years to make it to the championship.

During the pre-season, we went to Virginia, where we played a total of three games. Two of the three games were against two high school teams and one college team. Out of the three games, we won one and lost two.

Even though we didn’t do as well as we wanted to, the trip was still a good experience.

We got to experience how playing against a college team is and the competition level. During the season we also went to Tampa, Florida, for spring training. We were also able to experience how baseball is out there and the competition level there is. During this trip, we also didn’t do as well as we wanted, but it helped us prepare and showed us what other types of competition there is in the world. Both of these trips helped us throughout the season tremendously because they prepared us for the teams we had to play against during the season.

Emily Jackowicz Bishop Loughlin reunion was held this Fall, on October 19, 2019. The Fall season is many things, but mostly, it just comes as a shock. During the summer, we’re enjoying our warm weather, lack of responsibilities or to-do lists, and an overall enjoyment of the present moment, and then all of a sudden we’re immersed in Fall and not quite sure how we got there!

Fall, in a sense, is like adulthood, life after high school, life after Loughlin. You’re enjoying your youth, the “summer” of your lives, and then we graduate, “Fall” begins and a new chapter, your adulthood, starts. The leaves are falling, trees are bare and ready to let go of the old, but still remember and yearn for your nurturing roots. Especially at Loughlin, you can see how much the alumni cherished their seasons of Lasallian education. It helped shape them, but mostly it helped prepare them for the seasons of life ahead.

As a new staff member, I was both eager and unprepared for this event. I was eager because I wanted to help make the reunion special for all Loughlinites. I was unprepared because I could not have anticipated the pride, excitement, and nostalgia felt by this school community.

The reunion was for all class years ending in 4 or 9 from the graduating classes of 1949 through 2014. The range of classes was heartwarming; I truly enjoyed seeing that the Loughlin pride is something that lives on through history, regardless of how much time has passed.

Some memorable moments were had. The Class of 1969 raised over $127,500 for their class gift: it is the highest class gift since the 1965 class, as well as the 6th largest gift ever. The classes’ gracious gift help students continue to partake in their own Lasallian education.

The Lionheart Award, an award to honor graduates who have gone above and beyond their civic duties, was given at this year’s reunion. The award is presented to someone who contributes to Loughlin’s Lasallian education and mission, and this year, John Rowinski ’69 was the proud recipient.

The day was filled with smiling, picture taking, reminiscing, honoring, and most importantly, appreciating the home that Loughlin will forever be to these alumni. As you bear the seasons of life, your roots are what ground you, but most importantly, they are what started your own special story.

@BLMHS Alumni Alumna Grateful for Elisabeth Inalegwu ’19 Scholarship Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School taught me that family did not have to be bound by blood. At Loughlin I gained a whole new set of family that loved me and always put me in position to come out successful no matter what I wanted to do. The love and care I received while a student at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School I now know I will not find anywhere else.

As a student in high school, I was always involved. I knew almost all of the faculty and students and had individual relationships with everyone. I was a cheerleader, a basketball manager, I helped out in the alumni office, and any where else I was needed. Through all of these opportunities and extracurricular activities, I became a leader and acquired skills that have been helping me ever since.

Every year I spent at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School was filled with beautiful memories and many lessons on life and the world. Loughlin did not just prepare me for college, but prepared me for life. The emphasis the school put on both responsibility and accountability allowed me to understand that I had to make sure I took care of business and fulfilled my obligations. Now that I’m attending

Florida International University in Miami, understanding the meaning of responsibility and accountability has taken me very far.

At FIU I’m beginning to find my place and build new relationships and friendships. I often find my self reflecting back onto my time at Loughlin and making decisions based on the lessons learned in my time there. My goal has been to establish myself as a student that is focused and career driven. I have shown my professors and other faculty around campus the work ethic that I have and my ability to be helpful and useful wherever needed. As a student in a very competitive field, (nursing) I felt it was very important for me to create balance in my life. Academic excellence is my number one priority; however, volunteering and using my skills to be part of things outside of a class room are also equally important to me.

Although college has not been the easiest, I see where the qualities I acquired while a student at Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School have played a major part in making my adjustment so much easier.

Loughlin gave me the resources and skills to flourish, no matter where I go, and to be successful on every level. The Loughlin legacy is and will continue to be great, because of the care, time and knowledge invested into each and every student who passes through the school.

Loughlin will always be a home to me and a family to return to. I can not say thank you enough for all the school has done for me and I plan to help with scholarship aid in the future.

~Annual Fund~ Thank you for your past support to the annual fund. It is vital to continue the programs that we offer our students keeping Loughlin ahead of the education curve.

Alumnus Thankful for a Loughlin Education During my time at Loughlin, I was given a great foundation to start off my college career. The school is filled with so many people who just want to see you become successful, and those people are willing to help you get there. One thing you’re always told is to get involved and that’s what I did. In my senior year, I was Captain of the Latin Dance group, Vice President of Lasallian Youth, and a member of the House System. Having these responsibilities was a lot, but prepared me for what I should expect in my future. It also helped me to become stronger as a leader, and be more confident in myself and in the tough choices I have to make. Before I started my journey at St. Francis College, I kept reminding myself of my senior quote, “Confidence comes naturally with success, but success only comes to those who are confident”, which I still refer to today. This quote has pushed me to be more confident in college and to try new things, because that was the only way I was going to get through it.

So, I did that by forcing myself to talk to new people who I now call my friends.

I also pushed myself to get involved with the school by joining the drama club, which was something completely new to me. Being in the drama club was time consuming, but because of my experience at Loughlin, I was able to manage my time between schoolwork and extra activities at St. Francis. The drama club gave me many new friends but also helped me figure what I wanted to focus on in college. When I started college, I was undecided, but now I’m going to major in Communications, with a concentration on speech and theatre. Now, I have completed one whole semester and it wasn’t easy, but I’m about to begin my second semester, and this time I know my focus, and I’m more prepared. At St. Francis, I’m going to get involved as much as I can and make sure my time here is worth it. I would’ve never come this far if it were as for the supportive people at Loughlin. I’m very grateful for everything Loughlin has done for me and grateful for what St. Francis has already done for me.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Derrick Davis ’08 How did Loughlin prepare you?

Loughlin challenged me to be the best version of myself, whether inside the classroom, on the baseball field, at a talent show, on the handball court or at alumni night.

Through the academic and extracurricular challenges and rigor that came with Loughlin, my confidence in my abilities grew exponentially. Successfully rising to these challenges ultimately led me to one of the best decisions I have ever made—attending college at my other beloved alma mater, Morehouse College.

Countless names come to mind when I think of my experience and faculty at BLMHS: Ms. Sutcliffe, Mr. Fortune, Mr. Altman, Mr. Flack, Mr. Visco, Ms. Mckeever, Ms. Jemmott, Ms. Maxwell-Freeman, Ms. Van Velson, Ms. McNamara, Mr. Bartnikowski, the late and great Coach Kelly Williams and Chuck. On the baseball team, there was Coach Howard and Coach Garrett, and the previous Coach Vasquez.

These teachers and faculty members who actually cared for me, motivated me and showed me that I could be successful. Their challenging me at the same time was inspiring and heart-warming. The guidance department was second to none, and supported me even when I wanted to do crazy things, such as apply to 21 colleges and retake my SAT three times! Ms. Sutcliffe was always someone who I could bounce ideas off, even after I’d chatted the ears off my mother until she could take no more. Between guidance support, the integral teachers named above, of which I’m surely missing others, the baseball team and Coach Williams, as well as my community and friends at BLMHS, my time at BLMHS was truly fulfilling. My favorite classes were always History and English.

Where did you attend college and what do you do for a profession?

I attended Morehouse College where I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Following Morehouse, I attended Harvard Law School where I graduated in 2015 with a Juris Doctorate. After graduation from law school, I worked at a corporate law firm in the financial district in New York City, where I focused on significant corporate transactions. Following three years at the corporate law firm, I combined my passion for sports, law and business, and transitioned to my current position of legal counsel at Major League Soccer (MLS). At MLS, I draft and negotiate various agreements for MLS in the areas of sponsorship, broadcast, licensing and consumer products, and serve as a legal liaison for MLS clubs.

What advice would you offer current students?

Based on my early career decisions and experiences, my biggest piece of advice would be to follow your passion.

Let your desires/interests guide you, and there is no limit to where you may end up as rapper J. Cole once said, “You have to dream like you’ve never seen obstacles.”

Another piece of advice I would offer is the importance of mentorship. Having people who are invested in your success will be invaluable through-out your career and life.

If not for college professors, law school professors and various members of the legal profession investing in me, I would not be where I am today.

St. Augustine Reunion

What a day – 50+ years in the making! It started with breakfast at Juniors. For the first hour we stood engaged in conversation recollecting our high school years from 1965 – 1969 at St. Augustine.

We were soon reminded this was after all breakfast and that we needed to sit and eat. Later a Bishop Loughlin MHS school bus pulled up and whisked us over to our alma mater at 64 Park Place.

We were immediately struck by how bright the auditorium was; it was especially nice to see the stained glass windows again. Then we went down to the cafeteria. It was much larger than many of us recall; the lunch counter and stand up tables were absent. Of course, back in the day we didn’t spend too much time in the cafeteria. We then headed over to the gymnasium (aka “the pit”).

No, they didn’t raise the ceilings, and the pillars are now heavily padded. Today, with the bright lighting, you can see everything on the other side of the gym. Some of us could still hear Cosmo Moro, our gym teacher, telling us we had to climb the rope and touch the ceiling. The classrooms seemed a lot smaller, as they are laid out differently to accommodate today’s special needs kids. This is when the stories of “the Frere”, “Crazy Ray”, and the antics of the student “trouble makers” really began to flow.

Next up was the main event at Bishop Loughlin.

After we climbed the stairs and looked to our left we could see the St. Augustine memorabilia down Lancer Hall and the St. Augustine Chapel with the stained glass windows from the brother’s former residence. The warm embrace of our fellow alumni was especially nice. It was great meeting old

friends, and speaking with other classmates, faculty and guests about what had transpired over the last 50 years. It felt like we were home.

The mass service was inspirational and the vocal range of cantor, Joe Murray, (Pete’s son) was most memorable. Our senior class officers, Tim Sullivan M.D. and Jeff Zaloom Ph.D., were inducted into the Hall of Fame and Jerry Walsh was awarded the Community Leadership Award. Their respective lifes work covered the fields of Ophthalmology, Organic Chemistry and Business Management.

They each spoke of the extraordinary social changes that occurred during the 1960’s, including the Vietnam War, Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King’s assassinations and the lunar landing.

It was a very special period to have been a student at St. Augustine.

After cocktails, we enjoyed a wonderful buffet dinner and the opportunity to further converse with our old and new friends. A PowerPoint presentation helped us remember the classmates and faculty who left too soon, but remain with us in spirit. We are most appreciative of the superb coordinating efforts of the Bishop Loughlin team and their student ambassadors. It was an amazing time, following a long and eventful day. Many alumni didn’t want this time together to end, which wasn’t necessarily how we felt when we graduated back in June, 1969.

What’s different now? Well, many alumni look forward to the next time we can meet, and hope that others unable to join this 50th reunion can make the next gathering. We commit to keep in touch.

We are products of a LaSallian education. We are Lancers!

Bishop Loughlin aims to restart their bridged job program with our talented and successful alumni. We would love our alumni to build meaningful connections with our current students, in hopes that they will learn about their aspired field and gain hands on experience. Loughlin’s juniors and seniors are looking to work with you in various professions across Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. The students are open to paid positions, as well as internship opportunities.
