BISHOP LOUGHLIN MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Loyal Friends of Loughlin,
How do you change the world? That’s a tall order. I think to change the world, you must start small — as small as changing one life for the better. Your support allows our mission to flourish. This annual report shines a light on what you have helped faculty and staff accomplish in the lives of young women and men at Loughlin. Lasallian education claims to transform lives and at Loughlin that happens every day.
For a young person to develop his or her full potential they need opportunity. Given the opportunity, it’s up to the person to make the most of it. Loughlin is all about opportunity. It is worth noting that in NYC’s eight specialized high schools, students of color represent slightly less than 9% of the student population. Access to a high-quality educational experience is limited.
Loughlin enrolls 617 students. Two hundred and forty three (39%) are enrolled in various STEM courses offered in biomedical science, engineering, and coding. Advanced Placement courses attract 160 (26%) students. And much learning takes place outside the classroom. Our performing arts program engages 300 (49%) students in band, chorus, six dance groups, and theater. Athletics develops skills and sportsmanship in 240 (39%) student-athletes. Clubs meet
the needs of 90 (15%) students. Reread this demographic information and be proud of what is being done to give underserved students access to quality educational programs.
In short, Loughlin offers the very finest opportunities to young men and women — and our students take advantage of what we offer. If not us, then who? I do not have a satisfying answer to that question because the options are few or none. However, the most compelling witness to your commitment to make a difference in this world and to transform lives is highlighted in this report. Those of you reading this report are an honor roll of men and women who are providing the opportunity for young people to learn, grow, and mature — emotionally and spiritually; in short, to become men and women of good character.
Know that all of us at Loughlin remain committed to this task and will “fight the good fight.” We can’t lose; you are in our corner. Thank you.
Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever.
Sincerely,
Bro. Dennis Cronin, FSC President

Loughlin’s PROJECT PAVE THE WAY COMPLETED IN 2022
We are proud to report the Pave The Way project was completed in 2022 culminating at the dedication ceremony held in November.
The initial goal was to make needed significant repairs — first and foremost fixing the broken stairs and bleachers, the uneven concrete, chipped railings, and more.
But our vision grew. We wanted to create a safe entry for those who could not use the stairs. Our new ADA-compliant ramp allows for much-improved access to the school building. Further, we created an attractive and inviting outdoor space for students, returning alumni, families, and guests. The Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill neighbors have also appreciated the capital improvements.
Our campaign was successful because of the significant support of our Campaign Sponsors and hundreds of others who purchased personalized bricks — together they transformed our vision into a reality. We are also grateful to our architects, Acheson Doyle Partners.

BEFORE YOU GIVE
FOUR QUESTIONS TO ASK
The act of giving through your estate plan involves reflection and forethought.
HOW WILL MY GIFT BE USED?
1 2 3 4
Your gift might be invested to fund a long-term goal, or go toward covering an immediate need. Your gift could make a broad impact or be used for a specific purpose. This question helps you articulate your goals and allows the organization to share their initiatives.
WHAT IS THE VISION OF THE ORGANIZATION?
A vision statement shares where an organization is headed. Because a legacy gift provides support well into the future, make sure our plan aligns with your values.
WHAT IS YOUR TEN-YEAR PLAN?
Details on strategic plans, rainy-day funds, board bylaws, and fundraising guidelines are clues that an organization will remain viable.
HOW WILL MY GIFT BE RECOGNIZED?
WINTER 2023 McDONNELL SOCIETY BISHOP McDONNELL MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL

You have the right to opt in or out of recognition of your philanthropy. It’s OK to ask to be removed from a list. Whether your gift is celebrated in a public or private way is completely up to you! 21
OUR LOUGHLIN LEGACY
JANE P. COZZI MURRAY ‘65 BMD and MICHAEL W. MURRAY ‘63
Jane and I were interested in an estate gift to Loughlin for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, is a long held interest of ours to help otherwise financially disadvantaged children receive a quality education. We were blessed that our parents were able to send us to Bishop McDonnell and Bishop Loughlin at a time when each struggled to send three children to parochial schools. It was an example and lesson in sacrifice we have never forgotten.
Second, our personal experiences at these two wonderful schools created a natural opportunity to realize our interest in supporting the ambitions and dreams of young women and men.
Third, Loughlin is the embodiment of a quality High School offering not only a quality education but an environment that nourishes the student in a holistic manner.
Fourth, our estate gift will impact the lives of literally hundreds, if not thousands, of young women and men. The multiplying effect of our gift is enormous and continuous.
Attending a Loughlin graduation ceremony cemented our desire to establish a legacy gift. The extraordinary scholastic achievement verified our anecdotal observations and intuition about the great things going on at Loughlin and the quality, high achieving students graduating every year.
There are many factors that influence an Estate Gift . For Jane and me, Loughlin presents an opportunity to give back to a school of unquestioned excellence. A school we know and understand, a school that continues the Loughlin, Saint Augustine, and Bishop McDonnell legacies — and a school that continues to produce the future leaders of our society.

YOUR LEGACY
Attending a Loughlin graduation ceremony cemented our desire to establish a legacy gift.
YOUR PATH OF GIVING
A GIFT OPTION THAT MIGHT BE FOR YOU
PROVIDE FOR THE FUTURE OF BISHOP LOUGHLIN!
Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School gives students the foundation they need to succeed in life. By remembering Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in your overall estate or financial plans, you will make a lasting difference for Catholic education and open new doors to future generations of students. You can plan a gift to benefit us today or after your lifetime, and often there are tax benefits for you.
We Have the Language You Need
Outright Gift of Securities and Mutual Funds
Securities and mutual funds that have increased in value and been held for more than one year are one of the most popular assets to use when making a gift to Bishop Loughlin — the gift offers you the chance to support our work while realizing important benefits for yourself. Securities are most often in the form of an outright gift (you receive the same income tax savings that you would if you wrote us a check, but with the added benefit of eliminating capital gains taxes on the transfer) or a transfer on death (TOD) account * (by
placing a TOD designation on your brokerage or investment account, that account will be paid over to charities after your lifetime).
When you donate, you can reduce or even eliminate federal capital gains taxes on the transfer and you may also be entitled to a federal income tax charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities at the time of the transfer.
Visit blmhs.planmylegacy.org/ appreciated-securities for more information.
If you are under the age of 55 and would like to learn more information about the different options that may work best for you, visit blmhs.org/planmylegacy.
*State laws govern payable on death accounts.
For the simple language to add to your estate plan and to learn more about ways a gift in your estate plan can make an impact, contact Andrew Leary, Vice President, Institutional Advancement at 718-857-2700 x2251 or aleary@blmhs. org.
In as little as ONE SENTENCE, you can complete your gift:
The official bequest language for Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School is:
“I, [name], of [city, state, ZIP], give, devise and bequeath to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

CHANGE THE WORLD
WITHOUT TOUCHING YOUR INCOME — THE REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST
Do you want to support Bishop Loughlin but feel overwhelmed by everyday living costs — the latest home repair, food expenses, escalating gas prices, and more? There’s a solution that doesn’t involve writing a check. You can designate a gift in your estate plan. There are two main benefi ts to this meaningful step— your current income or assets remain the same and you can change your mind at any time. The easiest and most popular way to support
Bishop Loughlin while putting your current financial needs first is to include a gift in your will or revocable living trust. It takes as little as one sentence to complete your gift.
Best of all, you have the option to leave a percentage of your estate or an asset so that no matter how the size of your estate changes, gifts to your family and nonprofi ts remain proportional. Imagine how that single sentence can impact the future.
THREE TRICKS FOR ORGANIZING YOUR FINANCIAL PAPERWORK
It starts — an ATM receipt here, a bill there, a monthly bank statement, and a receipt you need for business expenses. Before long you’ve got a paper pileup. Have you considered the value to yourself and your family of staying organized? Smartly stored financial documents can help you at tax time and help others if they need to find something on your behalf. These TRICKS can minimize the time spent searching for important papers.
STORE PAPERS UPRIGHT
Store your papers upright instead of ‘stacking’. By turning your flat paper piles into vertical rows, you can easily flip through them and find what you’re looking for. The best products for storing papers this way are hanging-file systems, standing storage containers (like magazine file holders) and pocket folders that you store upright.
CREATE A ‘PENDING’ SPOT
Organizing is about efficiency — finding things faster, eliminating clutter… it is also about grouping. Group similar tasks. A ‘pending’ spot allows you to come back to the pieces when you have dedicated time. You’re more likely to sort them or act on them appropriately if you have the right mindset. Place the pending file where you open your mail and check it weekly.
NEVER SAVE A SINGLE SHEET
3
If it’s just a single page to deal with, add it to ‘pending’ or ’immediately act on’ folder. Every sheet needs a buddy. A single brochure, a single financial statement… should all have a home.
The Power of Organized Finances
There are smart ways to support organizations you care about, like Bishop Loughlin, without writing a check. As you organize your paperwork, we’d love to help you take advantage of some tax-smart charitable giving options. For example, you can name Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School as a beneficiary of your retirement plan account . To see how you can make the most of your hard-earned assets, contact us.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
NEW LAWS THAT MAY AFFECT YOUR GIVING DECISIONS
A new year has brought more than just resolutions. It’s brought new laws and other changes that may affect your giving decisions. And with any economic change, you may be looking at your finances and wondering how you will be impacted.
The new laws include retirement changes, known collectively as Secure 2.0, that may affect your saving and your giving. They may even make it easier for you to make a difference at organizations you care about. We can help answer any questions you might have about how the new retirement laws affect your charitable giving.
Some important things Secure 2.0 does that involve charitable giving:
1. Increases the required minimum distribution (RMD) age
Secure 2.0 increases the age retirees must begin taking taxable withdrawals to 73 in 2023 and 75 by 2033, up from the previous 72. It does not, however, increase the age an IRA owner can make a qualified charitable distribution. That age remains at 70½.
How does this affect me?
Simply put, the extension of the RMD age gives you more time to save. You will enjoy additional tax-free growth. It also can be significant if you do not want to begin withdrawing retirement funds during an unsettled economic climate, giving you more time for your stock portfolio to recover.
2. Adjusts for inflation the $100,000 annual limit on direct gifts to qualified charities from your IRA
Are you 70½ or older? If so, you may know about a popular gift option that allows you to make a gift directly from your IRA to a qualified charity without paying income taxes on the distribution. Historically, the amount you could give was capped at $100,000 per year. This figure will now be adjusted annually for inflation beginning in 2024.
How does this affect me?
This allows you to not only increase your giving but also ensure your giving keeps pace with inflation. And you can make an impact — and see that impact — now rather than after your lifetime.
Please remember Bishop Loughlin does not offer professional, legal, or tax advice. Always consult your legal and tax advisors regarding making a planned gift to the school.

We are grateful to the many alumni and friends who have established scholarship funds at Loughlin. The ability to offer scholarship aid is vital in our ability to fulfill our institutional mission.
At Loughlin, we offer both ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS and ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS . Our annual scholarship funds are annual gifts that support one or more students for the current academic year. Endowed funds must meet a minimum threshold before annual distribution to students.
The LOUGHLIN FOUNDATION holds a number of funds and distributes annual grants at their discretion.
We encourage you to consider starting your own named fund. Named annual scholarship funds start at $2,500 and endowed scholarship funds start at $50,000.
If you are interested in learning more about establishing a scholarship fund, please contact Andrew Leary at aleary@blmhs.org ı 718-857-2700
x2251 or Tiff any Perkins P’25 at tperkins@blmhs.org ı 718-857-2700 x2252.
If you do not see your name and you have established a Fund, please contact Vice President for Institutional Advancement Andrew Leary at 718-857-2700.
