BUILDING FOR OUR FUTURE Tom Van Buskirk, St. Augustine ’70
Although our Loughlin school history dates back to 1851, our current building in Ft. Greene was constructed in 1932. Thanks to solid construction, the building has withstood the tests of time well; however, it has slowly been showing signs of its age. It was recognized about a decade ago that significant investment would be needed to repair and restore the exterior of our building complex.
With this in mind, the Loughlin Board of Governors and The Loughlin Foundation embarked on a successful capital campaign in 2014. The majority of funds raised were dedicated for student scholarship and to our STEM program — PLTW@Loughlin. However, in recognition of the need for infrastructure investment, funds were also raised and set aside for capital repairs. The Loughlin Board and The Loughlin Foundation, along with the guidance and encouragement of Br. Dennis Cronin, FSC, moved to a complete restoration of the building’s exterior. Additionally, the school yard and track were obvious areas of need. Separate fundraising efforts were made to complete those projects. A select committee of the board, and Br. Dennis, hired the architectural firm of Acheson Doyle Partners 6
Architects to complete architectural drawings based on a review/survey of the building. Those drawings were then submitted for bids. The committee chose Cercone Exterior Restoration (based on their restoration of St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre and other restorative projects they completed). We never looked back....only forward.
THE WORK During the course of the past two years of the project’s duration, rusted steel beams were removed and replaced, others were waterproofed. Falling building parapets were removed and replaced to match the original design of the building. The gym roof was replaced. Decorative stone that was damaged was removed and replaced to match the original design. Netting, which had been installed as a safety, was removed, and the building brick repaired or replaced.
Additionally, all decorative windows were resealed from the outside. All sides of the building were repointed. The corner garden stone has been totally refurbished. What was done was not just a fix to the outside of the complex, but rather, it was restored to its original state.
NEARLY COMPLETE As of February 2019, the entire project is nearly complete, and should be finished as you read the annual report. This has been a long and loud project to say the least. The Board is grateful for the patience shown by the students, faculty, and staff at Loughlin. The Board of Governors are excited about this restoration and we are grateful to all who contributed to making this happen. Loughlin has been restored to its original glory because of you and, for that, we are indeed grateful!

T
he Ryans are long supporters of Loughlin — the Ryan Technology Room was the result of a significant investment made nearly a decade ago. This investment enabled Loughlin to wire the school and put SmartBoard technology throughout the building. Along with new computers, a new computer lab was constructed and new technology was incorporated into the Library and Media-Technology Center. Through the Three Schools, One Foundation Campaign, Mr. Ryan and our President Br. Dennis collaborated and put the foundational structures in place for PLTW@Loughlin to take off. Loughlin has five courses (and growing) in the curriculum with ten sections this year. Our goal is to expose as many students as possible to STEM courses.

46 YEARS COUNTING THE BROTHER BALDWIN PETER BONVENTRE, FSC SCHOLARSHIP FUND Celebrating his 90th birthday in 2017, Bishop Loughlin was proud to announce a scholarship in his honor in 2018.

wo years ago, Midge and I visited Loughlin, toured the school, and had lunch with Brothers Peter and Dennis. After that visit, we decided to make a longterm commitment to establish a scholarship fund in honor of Br. Peter. Loughlin was one of Br. Peter’s first teaching assignments; subsequently he was Vice Principal, Principal, and Guidance Counselor. He has served at Loughlin for over 40 years. All of you who know Br. Peter know what a dedicated and wonderful person he is.

f you were at Loughlin between 1954 and 1961, you knew him as an English teacher or as the Vice-Principal. If you were here between 1966 and 1971, he was your Principal. Since 1985, Br. Peter has been a college advisor and guidance counselor — he continues still to work with students on college scholarships and applications to this day. Add it up and he has been a part of “the school we love” for 46 years. He has “taught minds, touched hearts, and changed lives” for countless young men and women. What better way to honor a man so dedicated to Loughlin than establishing a scholarship fund in his name? Five students are receiving the scholarship this year, and our goal is to award the scholarship to several students each year. The fund has surpassed $200,000 in gifts and pledges thanks in large part to a 1:1 matching gift opportunity from Gregory Bertles ’61. We expect the fund to grow well into the future!
The fund was officially established just a year ago, and now has more than $200,000 in gifts and pledges (after $25,000 in scholarships were provided this academic year). More than 200 alumni made a contribution last year and it continues to grow. Many of us attended Loughlin when it was a full scholarship Diocesan school. Today the tuition is just over $10,000 per year. Many families find that a significant stretch; scholarship assistance helps them keep their children at Loughlin. Through the generosity of alumni, roughly $1,000,000 is used each year to supplement tuition. Many of us owe a great deal to Loughlin and the Brothers. I for one am extremely grateful for the ability and opportunity to give something back, and to help the continuance of a Lasallian education for young men and women today. Thank you all who have helped to build the Br. Peter Scholarship Fund. We look forward to your continuing support and for additional donors to build this fund.

You are jump-starting the legacy you would like to leave and giving yourself the joy of watching your philanthropy take shape. Moreover, you can fulfill any outstanding pledge you may have made by transferring that amount from your IRA as long as it is $100,000 or less for the year.
Q I’m turning age 70½ in a few months. Can I make this gift now? A No. The legislation requires you to reach age 70½ by the date you make the gift.

Q I have several retirement accounts —some are pensions and some are IRAs. Does it matter which retirement account I use?
A Yes. Direct rollovers to a qualified charity can be made only from an IRA. Under certain circumstances, however, you may be able to roll assets from a pension, profit sharing, 401(k) or 403(b) plan into an IRA and then make the transfer from the IRA directly to Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School. To determine if a rollover to an IRA is available for your plan, speak with your plan administrator.
Q I have two charities I want to support. Can I give $100,000 from my IRA to each?
Q Can my gift be used as my required minimum distribution under the law?
Q My spouse and I would like to give more than $100,000. How can we do that?
A Yes, absolutely. If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution, the IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Contact your IRA custodian to complete the gift.
A If you have a spouse (as defined by the IRS) who is 70½ or older and has an IRA, he or she can also give up to $100,000 from his or her IRA.
Q Do I need to give my entire IRA to be eligible for the tax benefits? A No. You can give any amount under this provision, as long as it is $100,000 or less this year. If your IRA is valued at more than $100,000, you can transfer a portion of it to fund a charitable gift.
A No. Under the law, you can give a maximum of $100,000. For example, you can give each organization $50,000 this year or any other combination that totals $100,000 or less. Any amount of more than $100,000 in one year must be reported as taxable income.
