T
he 100 building, originally called the Girls’ School, turns 61 this year. “The building has served our school well but, after 60+ years of use by thousands of students, it was in need of significant renovation,” said Principal Todd Orlando. Changes in technology and mechanical systems also pointed to the need for a major project on the west side of Kingman Avenue.
Lockers were removed from the 100 building, also known as the Girls’ School, over the Easter break in preparation for summer renovations.
With approved architectural plans in hand, it was determined that the building would be renovated in two phases – during the summers of 2021 and 2022. According to Vice Principal Vincent Saladino who has overseen the project, “There just isn’t enough time over one summer to complete a renovation of this magnitude. We wanted to be confident that we would be ready to open for business as usual in August, so we mapped out a plan to have the building as ready as possible, so that the construction personnel could start their work on the first day of exams in May.” Much of the preliminary groundwork, including the removal of all the lockers and the original boiler, was completed over Easter break. Auld & White Constructors, Inc. completed the job on time and the renovated classrooms were available to returning teachers to prepare for the first day of school on August 11. The following is a short list of the scope of this $2.5 million dollar project.
✓ Phase 1 Renovations to the 100 building: ▪ Replacement of mechanical and electrical systems ▪ Installation of electronic access control on all doors in the renovated areas ▪ Renovation of 16 classrooms equipping all with dedicated wireless access points, dimmable LED lighting and high efficiency HVAC units with fresh-air intakes ▪ Installation of 75” Promethean touchscreen boards in all 16 classrooms eliminating the need for projectors ▪ Installation of custom built-in cabinets for teacher storage and display Removal of the lockers, improved LED lighting, and a signature red and white paint job make the hallways in the 100 building wider and brighter.
▪ New student and teacher classroom desks ▪ Yet to be installed: artwork in main floor hallways While the renovations to the 100 building were the major focus of summer improvements this year, two other significant projects were also completed:
✓ Two modular classrooms were added to campus. They are located behind the John Baldwin Athletic Center. These classrooms will help address a shortage of classroom space because of increased enrollment. The modular classrooms will be used for health and religion classes.
✓ The scoreboard on the field at William H. Johnston Stadium was replaced at a cost of $46,000.
Sixteen completely renovated classrooms in the 100 building were ready for students when they returned to school in August.

Preserving Our History
Commemorating Pedro Pans at BK Bishop Felipe Estévez, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine, blessed and dedicated two identical plaques commemorating Bishop Kenny High School’s participation in Operation Pedro Pan. The blessing took place at Mass on the occasion of the Bishop’s annual campus visit in March. Operation Pedro Pan, a program sponsored by Catholic Relief Services in Miami, assisted over 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children to escape the com- Pedro Pans, including (L-R) Dr. Antonio Gordon ’61, Bishop Felipe Estévez, and Mr. José Ramirez ’63, gathered after Mass in the munist regime of Fidel Castro and seek a Demetree Learning Commons to visit with the other special guests in attendance at the Mass and blessing. new home in the United States. Beginning in 1961, at least 91 Pedro Pans came to Jacksonville where they were housed by the Diocese of St. Augustine at Camp St. John, on the grounds of what is now the Marywood Retreat and Conference Center. These children attended Bishop Kenny High School. The blessing of the plaques took place at Mass in the John Baldwin Athletic Center. Among the special guests in attendance were Dr. Antonio Gordon ‘61 and Mr. José Ramirez ‘63, two of BK’s Pedro Pan alumni who were instrumental in coordinating the event. It is notable that Bishop Estévez also came to the United States as part of Operation Pedro Pan on July 2, 1961. How fitting that he would provide the blessing.
The plaque that was blessed by Bishop Estévez is displayed along with a picture of the Pedro Pans that lived at Camp St. John. It has been installed at the entrance to the Demetree Learning Commons, a high traffic area that will allow students and visitors to learn the story of Operation Pedro Pan and Bishop Kenny’s part in the journey of so many young people who sought refuge in the United States.

Classmates Colleen Lanahan Foy ’65 and Pedro Pan Maria Victorero Otero '65 visited at the reception following Mass.
After Mass, invited guests along with Bishop Estévez, Principal Todd Orlando, and other school staff gathered in the Demetree Learning Commons for a brief reception and an opportunity to catch up. For some Pedro Pans, their time spent at BK was brief, less than one year; for others it was significantly longer. All are part of our Bishop Kenny family. We are so happy that their story is preserved as part of Bishop Kenny’s permanent archive. Bishop Kenny High School has installed its plaque at the entrance to the Demetree Learning Commons and has donated the duplicate plaque to Camp St. John for installation in the dining hall. It is important that we preserve this piece of BK history and this significant time in Cuban and American History.
Three generations of BK Crusaders: Maria Victorero Otero ’65, who came to Florida with Operation Pedro Pan, is joined on the left by her daughter Vicki Otero Miller ’92 and granddaughters Isabella Miller ’22 and Natalie Otero ’22.
Retirements 2021 At the end of the school year Mass and luncheon in June, the BK community celebrated the long and distinguished service of three members of the Bishop Kenny family. Mrs. Mary DeSalvo, Vice Principal of Academics and Student Services, along with faculty members, Mrs. Denise Galloway and Ms. Marjorie MacLean were honored. Together, their combined years of service to BK totals 49 years! Mr. John Taylor, BK’s Director of Technology for 22 years elected to retire last December. John was recognized by the administration, faculty, and staff for his service to our school at a meeting prior to the Christmas break. The entire Bishop Kenny community celebrates the many contributions of these dedicated members of our school family. We send best wishes for a long, healthy, and happy retirement to all. (L-R) Principal Todd Orlando congratulates Ms. Marjorie MacLean, Mrs. Mary DeSalvo, and Mrs. Denise Galloway for their many years of service to the BK community.
Bishop Kenny High School: A Community of Inclusion In an open letter sent to the Bishop Kenny community in June of 2020, Principal Todd Orlando said “Bishop Kenny unequivocally condemns racism. We want our Crusaders of color to know that we see you, we hear you, and we value your lives.” In that letter he announced the establishment of an advisory boardthe Task Force on Diversity. The task force is chaired by Latasha Garrison, a BK alumna from the Class of 1990. Latasha is a graduate of the University of Florida Latasha Garrison,’90, Chairman of the Bishop where she obtained Kenny High School Task Force on Diversity both bachelor’s and law degrees. She is the proud mother of two children and is active in the Jacksonville community. As chair of the Bishop Kenny Task Force on Diversity, Latasha prays, “That God can enlighten and guide our paths, order our steps, and provide the wisdom the task force will need to make a difference in the lives of all of our children.” The 15-member task force composed of faculty, parents, alumni, and students has met quarterly since the summer of 2020. Their first order of business was to implement a stakeholder survey to better understand current sentiments regarding race. The continued work of the group will be to keep the words of the mission statement true, to work on ensuring that all students
can achieve and excel as they prepare for college and for life. In short, to ensure that everyone can say, We Are Bishop Kenny. The Diversity Student Union (DSU), an organization open to all current students and supported by the faculty, was also established in the fall of 2020. Its purpose is to ensure that students are given the opportunity to celebrate the diversity of the BK community. In February the DSU sponsored a DiWinston Peele ’22, president and founding member of the Diversity Student Union versity Celebration Week. The event included lunchtime music representative of our community’s various cultures and cafeteria menu items-of-the-day from different culinary backgrounds. Teachers were encouraged to highlight notable figures in their field who came from diverse cultures, and daily PA and Schoology announcements featured unique facts about each of the cultural backgrounds highlighted during the five-day celebration. Another DSU project was a day of service at White Harvest Farms. The DSU, now in its second year, is up and running and has great interest from the student body. More information about the Task Force on Diversity can be found under the About tab on the Bishop Kenny website www.bishopkenny.org.

300 families in need of financial assistance. This year especially, many families turned to us for assistance due to unexpected job reduction or loss. The 4th annual Day of Giving, an important event in support of The Fund for BKHS, was also a great success. This year our students really got involved! The Student Council coordinated a Day of Giving campaign with the theme “One More Crusader” and they set a goal of $5000. Add a dash of healthy competition between the four grade levels and a challenge match from Carla Harris '80, and the goal was met and exceeded! Our thanks to our enthusiastic Student Government leaders and all the parents, alumni, and friends who made our Day of Giving a success The following is a comprehensive list of

AUCTION REPORT 35th Annual BK Boosters Auction
Lessons Learned During the Pandemic The 36th Annual BK Boosters Auction AN ONLINE EVENT March 24-26, 2022 Sponsors Needed If you are interested in becoming an auction sponsor, please contact Sheila Marovich in the Advancement Office at 398-7545 or by e-mail advancement@bishopkenny.org
The BK Boosters online auction opened at noon on Thursday, May 6 and remained open for 58 hours, ending at 10pm on Saturday, May 8. During those 58 hours participants were able to shop a virtual catalog of items donated by parents, alumni, and area businesses at their convenience. Throughout the duration of the auction, intermittent text messages helped to keep bidders engaged. Messages notified participants when they were outbid, offered links to items with no bids, and even reminded everyone of the time left until the close of business. On Saturday night, with only 10 minutes to go, a final text resulted in a flurry of bids from enthusiastic bidders with a last-minute bidding strategy! When it was over all 450 items, including an impressive array of gift baskets, vacation packages, jewelry, art, household items, electronics, and sports memorabilia, were sold and a net profit of $126,000 was realized. Before the first virtual auction, last year our committee could not have imagined such success with this format. The lesson we have learned is that going virtual has opened the door to bidders who would not otherwise have participated, and many of our former in-person guests report that they enjoy the new extended-time format and convenience of online bidding!
We look forward to the 36th Annual BK Boosters Virtual Auction on March 24-26, 2022.
Volunteers Always Needed There are many ways to get involved including: becoming an auction sponsor, an item or basket donor, item solicitor, basket workshop volunteer etc. For more information call Sheila Marovich in the Advancement Office at 398-7545 or e-mail advancement@bishopkenny.org

The Bishop Kenny Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Collin Clark, performed two selections, May a Rainbow Run Beside You and Fly Away Home. Dr. Maurice Roulhac, a member of the Bishop Kenny Class of 1979, delivered the graduation address. Dr. Roulhac, a prominent vascular surgeon who practices in Fayetteville, NC is a graduate of Jacksonville University. Peace in Christ Award
Principal Todd Orlando presented the annual Peace in Christ Award to Jonathan Lumbag.
The annual Bishop John J. Snyder Peace in Christ Award was established in 2001. It is given to a graduating senior who demonstrates love of God by consistently exhibiting those virtues modeled by Bishop John Snyder. The recipient must be in good academic standing, possess a character reflecting humility, demonstrate a history of serving others with compassion and resolving conflicts, and be an active member of their Church community. Jonathan Lumbag was selected as the award recipient for the Class of 2021. Jonathan’s goal in life is to help the people he encounters and to use his God given talents to the best of his ability. He said, “I always contemplated how I could help people, as I only have two hands; however, along my journey – especially in those little detours in life – God has shown me and given me opportunities to help others without me realizing it. I learned that service and compassion do not have to be grand acts, like donating millions of dollars. It is in my daily life that I have learned to do small things with great love.” Jonathan had a very rigorous academic schedule and was also very involved in extracur-
ricular activities, including Campus Ministry. Jonathan was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and served as a lector for 7:10am daily Mass. He also served the BK community as the voice on the intercom for morning and afternoon announcements. He was President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a member of the Minds, Hearts, and Souls group, and a member of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. Jonathan has been a member of the cross country and track and field teams since his freshman year stating, “I have absolutely no regrets, despite the pain, as I have met many of my closest friends in cross country.” Jonathan will attend the University of Florida to study sociology or accounting. He is also discerning the priesthood with hopes of joining the seminary at some point in his life. Deacon DeLuca reflected on knowing Jonathan, “I am edified that for four years, with rare exception, Jonathan has attended daily Mass at BK and has a great devotion to Mary and a passion for the unborn. He will inspire many along his life journey.”
Members of the Class of 2021 gathered at St. Joseph’s Church before Graduation Mass.

The 10-member inaugural class of Bishop Kenny’s AP Capstone Diploma Program successfully completed the academically rigorous two-year program in May. Capstone is a College Board program comprised of two year-long courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. Capstone students must also complete a minimum of four other AP courses. Mr. Michael Broach, who taught each of the two courses commented, “Throughout the program, students engage in skills often required in the junior and senior years of college – and even in post-graduate work.” As juniors each of the AP Seminar students completed a team project and presentation, as well as an individual research project and virtual presentation. They each submitted their work to the College Board and received passing scores allowing them to move on to AP Research. In the AP Research course, each student completed their own individual research studies, ranging in topics from medicine, public health, the law, politics, psychology, education, and fine arts. Each completed an academic paper nearing 5,000 words followed by a presentation to a panel of experts where they had to defend their research and findings. Their work was submitted for evaluation by the College Board to determine their eligibility to be awarded the Capstone diploma or the Seminar and Research Certificate. AROUND CAMPUS Emma Milton Attends FBI Youth Leadership Program Emma Milton ’23, represented the state of Florida at this summer’s FBI National Academy Youth Leadership Program (YLP), held at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The YLP which took place from June 24 through July 2 is held at no cost to participants. The program is designed to develop an influential community of socially conscious and service-minded leaders, who will positively shape the world. The sixty participants range in age from 14-16 and represent 40 states and four international countries. All were exposed to intensive instruction during the eight-day program. Milton, a member of the junior class, became interested in the YLP as a freshman when one of her teachers assigned students to research potential careers that would fit their interests. Milton went right to the FBI website. She says she had been interested in a career with the FBI for as long as she could remember and, when she saw the summer program, knew it was an opportunity to learn more – not only about leadership, but also, what college degree would be best-suited for a career in the FBI. Milton stated, “I am interested in the FBI because the idea of creating solutions for issues that matter to our nation is exciting to me and I love the aspect of using teamwork to solve problems.” She opened her application essay with these sentiments, “Leadership isn’t just reserved for heroes saving the world, but rather, refers to any person – young or old – who embraces responsibility, challenges, adventure, and duties. Most importantly, the act of leadership is using certain qualities like

teamwork and motivation to aid in achieving a shared goal.” Emma has a very rigorous academic schedule and is actively involved in several school activities. She is a member of the Anchor, Interact, Science, Spanish, Family and Consumer Science clubs, and the Spanish Honor Society. She is very passionate about volleyball and plays year-round on BK’s indoor team and beach teams, as well as a travel team. Milton’s goal is to attend a four-year university and begin a career in the FBI. She would like to become a leader that meets her definition of a true leader and in her words someone who, “Is responsible for creating a team that is motivated and trustworthy. Most importantly, a true leader must hold himself or herself accountable for what happens under their leadership. Within all these aspects of a leader’s ‘job’, come development, integrity, trust, and performance.”
Ilaria Georgi ’21, and Sydney Mohler ’21 delivered a Day of Giving gift to the student collection on behalf of Kenny Angels.

Poetry Contest Winner: Hallie Knight ‘21 To Rebuild
Hallie Knight ’21 received top honors as the winner of the 2021 Inaugural Poem Contest for Students sponsored by the Academy of American Poets. As the first-place winner Hallie received a $1,000 cash award. Her poem, To Rebuild, is posted at Poets.org and will appear in American Poets magazine.
By Hallie Knight ‘21
The house was built, Brick by brick, pane by pane, Initially withstanding winds, The force of a hurricane.
She wrote the poem in AP Literature following the guidelines: “to reflect on the country’s challenges, strengths, and hope for its future.” Knight noted, “I wanted to acknowledge the greatness of the potential for our country at this present moment, and the opportunity we have as citizens to choose what it becomes out of all this chaos.”
But over time, the faults are found As storm after storm Assails, the craftsmanship outdated, In need of reform. The windows break, one by one, Under the weight of wrongs, the structure strains, Until one day fire catches, And only the foundation of good intentions remains. While easiest would be to walk, To abandon, moving on to rebuild, The value is seen by those who have called it Home, desires to be fulfilled. Remembering the mistakes, Maintaining the hope of freedom, Hand in hand, we work, Entering a new season. The work is not complete until The walls protect all who live there, No exceptions. Abandonment of all Unnecessary despair. A job led by all, not by one, We work long days turn long nights. The creation of our hands Proving more than surface level acknowledgment of rights. The past is not buried But underlies What we have transformed Before our eyes.
When asked how it felt to be selected for this special honor, Knight responded, “I feel honored that my poem was selected, especially knowing that the contest was judged by Richard Blanco, such an accomplished poet, whose inaugural poem creates such a beautiful image of our country.” Hallie, an excellent student, was a National Merit Finalist and active in the art, math, and science clubs. She plans to pursue an engineering degree in college but would also like to continue her artistic pursuits which include writing and drawing.
Take a Bow! Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the Bishop Kenny Theater Department was able to present their production of Cinderella in the spring of 2021. Three well-attended, socially-distanced performances were presented, including a matinee. Don’t miss out on The Addams Family coming this October to the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center.

Our Catholic Identity Since its founding 70 years ago Bishop Kenny High School’s Catholic identity has been the defining characteristic that has separated our school from a host of other private college-prep schools. Our Catholic identity is not only fundamental to the mission of our school, it is the lens through which our teachers, staff, and administrators are expected to view their day-to-day work and conduct their encounters with students. It is that same lens that reflects the values and teachings of Jesus who is both the model and the sustenance of our educational ministry. As part of this year’s pre-planning schedule, faculty, staff, and administrators attended a day of retreat and faith formation. The day began with Mass concelebrated by BK Chaplain Fr. Martin Raj and Fr. Clay Ludwig, BK Class of 2011. Fr. Clay joins our Campus Ministry staff this year and will be present on campus each Friday. Director of Campus Ministry and Religion Department Chairman Deacon Robert De Luca assisted at Mass. After Mass everyone participated in faith formation sessions, each of which was centered around one of the three tenants of Mr. Orlando’s theme for this school year: Remember, Renew, and Rejoice. Missy Parkison, D.Min, a member of the religion department, also reviewed and highlighted the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching as a way of providing opportunities for all to discern how they can best bring the joy of the Gospel and the wisdom of the Church to bear on current social justice issues.
Bishop Kenny continues to advance its academic program by offering a wide array of Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which now total 24. These courses give students collegelevel experiences while in high school, as well as the opportunity to earn college credit. In the past five years, the number of AP exams given in a single year has grown by over 100, totaling 786 exams administered in May 2021 alone. As the number of courses and exams have grown, so also has Bishop Kenny’s success rate – with 82% of students earning a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam this past May, a tremendous accomplishment!
After a welcome back luncheon, the retreat ended with a spiritual conference and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament led by Father Clay Ludwig.
Northeast Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair and State Science Fair Despite restrictions caused by COVID-19, eager Bishop Kenny students participated in the 2021 Northeast Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair. The competition, held last February, was the smallest in recent years with a total of only 35 senior projects. BK students received 8 Place Awards and 22 Special Awards during the virtual awards ceremony. Science Department Chairman Mrs. Vicki Schmitt commented, “The students’ attention to detail and enthusiasm for scientific and engineering endeavors made this year’s fair a remarkable event especially given challenging COVID circumstances.” Three students, Izabelle Young, Madeline O’Neill, and Antonio Valentino all continued to the State of Florida Science Fair. Izabelle placed 2nd in Physics and Astronomy and won an Air Force Award with her project, "Developing a Novel System to Combat Space Radiation and Neurodegeneration Using Electromagnetism." Antonio received a recognition award for his project, "Conquering Concrete." Both students won scholarships valued at $120,000 each to attend the Florida Institute of Technology. Two of the students who advanced to the State of Florida Science Fair, Antonio Valentino ’22 and Izabelle Young ’22, are pictured with their awards. Each won a scholarship valued at $120,000 to attend the Florida Institute of Technology.
Toshiba/NSTA ExploraVision Commends Educators Bishop Kenny High School Science teachers, Mrs. Patrycja Puiu and Mrs. Lee Paulus were among a select group of 29 teachers from across the United States and Canada recognized by Toshiba and the National Science Teaching Association, NSTA, for their commitment to science education and nurturing student’s creative and innovative thinking. The recognition was in the spring of this year. Mrs. Puiu and Mrs. Paulus are teacher/coaches who submit student teams to the annual ExploraVision competition, an event sponsored by Toshiba and administered by the NSTA. The annual ExploraVision competition engages K-12 students in real-world problem solving with a strong emphasis on STEM, challenging them to envision a new technology through collaborative brainstorming and research of current science. The two were also among the teachers who submitted the most eligible student entries for the 2020-2021 competition.

Eagle Scouts 2020-21 Bishop Kenny High School Eagle Scouts. (Front Row L-R) Sean Meisler ‘21, Matthew Bailey ’21, Andrew Russell ’21 (Back Row L-R) Aden Dreher ’22, Joey Eichler ’21, Ryan Spinelli ’23, and Adam Shalley ‘23
Seven students, representing six scout troops from throughout the greater Jacksonville area, earned scouting’s highest honor during the 2020-2021 school year. Congratulations to: Matthew Bailey ‘21, Joey Eichler ’21, Sean Meisler ’21, Andrew Russell ’21, Aden Dreher ’22, Adam Shalley ’23, and Ryan Spinelli ’23 for achieving this great accomplishment. One of the main requirements on the road to achieving the rank of Eagle Scout is the planning, development, and completion of a significant service project. It is essential that the scout successfully lead volunteers as they help to execute the successful completion of the project. This year the young men had a wide array of projects encom-
passing local, church, and community needs. Matthew Bailey built an agility course for Canine Services at a German Shephard shelter, and Joey Eichler designed, built, and installed ten bird feeders and five bird houses for Westminster Woods Retirement Center. Sean Meisler continued with the outdoor theme by building an information board with wildlife and park activities for First Christian Church of the Beaches. Adam Shalley remodeled an art classroom at San Juan del Rio middle school turning it into a Religion classroom complete with new bookcases, classroom Bibles, appropriate wall décor, and a prayer room. Ryan Spinelli designed and built a fire pit and four benches for North Florida School of Special Education, and Aden Dreher designed and installed a military memorial paver path outside San Juan del Rio Catholic School. Andrew Russell built and installed a multi-person shooting bench for the Atlantic Beach Police Station. All these Eagle Scout projects benefit the local community and were funded at no cost to the public, with the donated labor from the young men. The Eagle Scout rank was established in 1912 and represents a significant accomplishment that takes many years to achieve.
National Catholic Committee on Scouting Scholarship Congratulations to David Hoyt ’21 who was awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS) through the Emmett J. Doerr Memorial Scout Scholarship Fund. Eight service scholarships were awarded nationwide to recognize scouts for outstanding service and leadership in the areas of Church, Community, School, and Scouting. David achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America while in his sophomore year at Bishop Kenny. It took two years to plan, organize and fundraise $3,000 for the 25’ x 13’ interactive concrete sundial that was built at Christ the King Catholic School. David worked closely with L’Arche Jacksonville, a faith-filled residential community for adults with intellectual disabilities. They created the tiles used for the time of day and the months of the year on the sun dial in their Rainbow Workshop. David dedicated the sun dial to his mother, Erica Hoyt, who passed away when he was very young. David credits his maternal grandparents who adopted him for introducing him to scouting. They took him to an Eagle Court of Honor at the age of five and from that day on he was determined to become an Eagle Scout. “Ever since starting scouts and practicing my faith, volunteering has been at the forefront of everything that I do. I am always glad to volunteer because I love to see someone with a smile on their face, and it puts purpose in my soul,” stated David. He has also earned three of the Religious Emblems offered by NCCS including the Light of Christ, Ad Altare Dei, and Pope Pius XII. David Hoyt ’21 pictured at his completed Eagle Scout project at Christ the King Church.

David actively volunteers at Christ the King parish as an altar server, member of the youth group, and a Vacation Bible School teacher. David currently attends Jacksonville University.

were Cadets Tommy Jackson and Kristina Hoy. Bishop Kenny’s NJROTC program established in 1973 has a nearly 50-year history of helping to form thousands of upstanding citizens. Its graduates have attended the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and many well-known ROTC programs at major universities. The Unit fields competitive teams in Academics, CyberPatriot, Drone, Athletics, Drill, and Marksmanship to name a few.
The BK NJROTC Academic Team won the first-place trophy at the Freshman/Sophomore Brain Brawl Tournament sponsored by Clay High School in April. The tournament challenges the cadets’ knowledge of Naval Science, History, Science, current events, and general trivia.
BK’s NJROTC program has achieved Distinguished Unit With Honors status for the past 12 years and is ranked 2nd out of 63 units in Area-12.
BK NJROTC Hosts CYBERCAMP
BK NJROTC cadets participated in the Beaches Go Green beach clean up from Atlantic Beach to Jacksonville Beach collecting an estimated 30 pounds of trash.
(L-R) Cyber Camp participants Cailey Clancy, Sean Moneyhan, Samantha Whitney, Zachary Sellers, Alberto Diaz, Elizabeth Harden, and Matthan Cabotage.
Bishop Kenny High School’s NJROTC Unit was selected from units from across the United States to participate in the 2021 Air Force Association’s (AFA) CyberCamp program. BK served as a host for both Standard and Advanced CyberCamps. As an AFA CyberCamp host the unit received software and a hands-on curriculum kit designed to teach students cyber safety, cyber ethics, and critical network security skills
and tools. Each AFA CyberCamp culminated in an exciting team-based competition that put the campers in the role of IT Administrators tasked with finding and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated network environments. The local AFA CyberCamp competitions closely mimic AFA’s annual CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which will enter its fourteenth season in October.
More than 30 students attended Bishop Kenny’s AFA CyberCamps during the last two weeks of July and included NJROTC cadets from Oakleaf High School, and Valdosta High School (GA). Because of their past successes, the courses were taught by the Unit’s Cyber Patriot Team Commander Cadet Sapp and Unit’s Executive Officer Cadet August Gould. 33

Volleyball Wins State 4A Title
he BK Crusaders won the school’s third 4A State Championship in girls’ volleyball in November defeating Cardinal Gibbons 29-27, 25-18, 17-25, 25-20. The girls finished their season with a 21-8 record, ranked 16th in the state. This is the third State title in program history and the second for Head Coach Suzanne Winkler. Winkler started the season with a young and inexperienced team saying, “This team is very special, and it was through sheer will in their hearts, their ambition, and their drive that truly made this happen.” Winkler has been the head coach of the team for 18 years. She noted, “There’s been a lot of teams and a lot of girls that have come through the BK volleyball program, and this team had more to overcome than many of the previous teams.” Winkler and her coaching staff worked very hard with the girls to make them competitive and to give them the skills needed to be successful. “We had a lot of things to overcome and when we finally got the chemistry right, it all came together. The girls worked hard every day

and just believed that they could do it playing one game at a time,” stated Winkler. Three of the six starters were seniors. Emma Fraidenburg is the only member of the team to continue her volleyball career in college. She will be playing as a middle blocker for University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Junior Alexis Chin became the starting setter mid-way through the season and had a season high of 853 assists with 206 digs and 39 service aces. Junior Bailey Chin, Alexis’ twin sister, also won a starting position mid-season as an outside hitter with 164 kills and solid back row play. Tina Nika had a huge season with a career high of 497 digs and led the team with 48 service aces. The power behind the offense was sophomore Allison Cavanaugh. She had a season high 295 kills which was a .336 hitting percentage and 57 blocks. Cavanaugh summarized her feelings this way, “This feels great, it doesn’t even seem real that we won State. We went through so much as a team and it was a crazy season due to Covid-19, amazing finish for us!”
Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Volleyball Coach and Player of the Year Bishop Kenny indoor volleyball Coach Suzanne Winkler and star player, Ally Cavanaugh’23 have been named the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach and Player of the Year. These awards cap off an outstanding season that ended with the Crusaders winning the State Championship by defeating Cardinal Gibbons in four sets and finishing the season with a 21-8 record. Cavanaugh ’23, the starting outside hitter for the team, was a key component to the BK offense in the state win. A passionate player, she had a season high 295 kills, a .336 hitting percentage, and 57 blocks. Cavanaugh plays volleyball year around and her dream is to play for a large Division 1 program in college. The Crusader volleyball team is led by Coach Suzanne Winkler who was named 4A Coach of the Year. Winkler has been head coach at BK for 18 years with a winning percentage of .718 and overall record of 394-155. Winkler has led BK to 18 consecutive District Championships, 13 Regional Championships, 13 State Final Four appearances, three State Runners-Up, and two State Championships. She has been the District Coach of the Year five times, Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year twice, and twice for the Double-Goal National Finalist Positive Coach Award. She values her players as individuals, but coaches them to play as a team and work for the greater good of the program. 40

The award was established at Notre Dame in 1883 as an American counterpart of the Golden Rose, a papal honor that antedates the 11th century. The medal has been awarded annually at Notre Dame to a Catholic “whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the Church and enriched the heritage of humanity.”

A
lumnus Mac Hill, BK Class of 2010, was ordained Rev. Mac Hill on May 15, 2021. While at BK he played football and competed on the weightlifting team. He was also an Eagle Scout. Asked about his years at Bishop Kenny, Fr. Mac shared that he was not the best student, nor did he take his faith very seriously. However, he recalls a moment during his senior year when his class was in adoration in the Bishop Tanner Chapel, “It hit me powerfully that it was Jesus,” Fr. Mac said.
In 2014, Fr. Mac once again found himself in adoration at a retreat, this time, with the Catholic Gators. He had been involved with the Catholic Gators at the University of Florida for about a year when he first began to hear a call from God to become a priest. Fr. Mac remembers thinking “I can do that” during the final blessing at Mass one Sunday. He quickly brushed it off, ignoring the thoughts that only continued to get louder over the next 8 months. Finally, after months of discernment, seeking counsel from several priests, and praying specifically for the grace to desire what God wants, he felt more open to hear what God had in store for him. It was at that retreat, during those moments in adoration, that Fr. Mac finally answered God’s call with a resounding “yes,” resulting in an overwhelming sense of peace and clarity. Fr. Mac graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in economics in the spring of 2014 and entered St. John Vianney College Seminary a few months later. In 2016 he entered the major seminary, St. Vincent de Paul, graduating with a Master of Divinity in May 2021. During his time in the seminary, Fr. Mac completed his pastoral year at San Juan del Rio parish under the direction of Fr. John Tetlow. Today Father Mac continues to work alongside Fr. Tetlow '72 as parochial vicar at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine. 42
Carla Harris ‘80 is the recipient of the University of Notre Dame’s 2021 Laetare Medal, the oldest and most prestigious honor given to American Catholics. The award was presented at the 176th University Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 23. Ms. Harris is a vice chairman of wealth management and senior client adviser at Morgan Stanley, as well as a celebrated gospel singer, speaker, and author. “Throughout her exceptional career, she has exemplified the highest ideals of American enterprise, championed the principle that opportunity should never be denied on the basis of gender or race and generously mentored countless rising leaders,” said Notre Dame President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C. “Enriched by her gifts as a singer and public speaker, her work in the competitive world of banking is firmly rooted in her commitment to service, developing the next generation of leaders and her Catholic faith.” Among her many charitable endeavors, Carla has funded a permanent scholarship for academically gifted African American students at Bishop Kenny High School for more than 30 years. In 2011 the new Performing
Arts Center was added to the campus and named in her honor. Ms. Harris began her career at a time when very few of her colleagues were Black or women, and her trajectory has been steadily ascendant. She was chair of the Morgan Stanley Foundation from 2005 to 2014 and is a member of the boards for Harvard University and the Walmart Corp. In 2013, Harris was appointed by President Barack Obama to chair the National Women’s Business Council, an independent counsel to the president, Congress, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. She understands her successes as a responsibility to help others, saying, “We are blessed so that we may be a blessing to others." Consistent with this belief, Harris has mentored hundreds of associates and led efforts focused on promoting women and people of color in business. She oversees Morgan Stanley’s multicultural client strategy and helped build the company’s Multicultural Innovation Lab, which brings together companies on an accelerator program for innovative tech startups led by multicultural entrepreneurs.
A biographical plaque that introduces Carla Harris ’80 to students and visitors and a photo taken at the dedication of the building has been installed at the entrance to the Carla Harris Performing Arts Center.
Bishop Kenny Graduates Named Monsignors
On May 19, Bishop Felipe Estévez announced that Bishop Kenny graduates, Father James Boddie, Jr. ‘70 and Father Michael Houle ’71, were bestowed with the papal honor of “Chaplain to His Holiness” by Pope Francis and given the title Monsignor, a title bestowed on a priest who has distinguished himself by many years of exceptional service to the church. “As St. Paul once said, recognition of any good deed of one of our brothers enhances the body of Christ,” said Bishop Felipe Estévez. “This local church is joyful for this recognition by the Holy Father of two exemplary priests who have shown such dedication to God’s people.”
Since leaving Bishop Kenny Msgr. Houle has served as the pastor of St. Paul Parish in Jacksonville Beach. He is currently overseeing the final phase of building a beautiful new church for that parish. He also continues his work as Episcopal Vicar for Development and Finance for the Diocese of St. Augustine.
Msgr. James Boddie, Jr. ‘70
Msgr. Michael R. Houle’71
Msgr. Boddie has served in several leadership positions for the diocese and nationally, including the pastor of Christ the King Parish in Jacksonville, coordinator of the Priest Personnel Board since 2016, a member of the College of Consultors, membership on the National Advisory Council of Catholic Bishops from 20162020, chaplain to the Morning Star School, spiritual advisor of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, and director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministry for the diocese.
Msgr. Michael R. Houle ’71 is well known to the Bishop Kenny community not only as an alumnus of the school, but also as a former faculty member and as President from 1989-2015. Most people would say that he changed the face of the Bishop Kenny campus with a comprehensive renovation and building program, but Msgr. Houle would insist that his greatest accomplishment and legacy is the financial aid program that he started at BK in 1989. Each year, over 300 students benefit from all that BK has to offer because of Msgr. Houle’s commitment to making financial aid available to BK families.
Msgr. James Boddie ‘70 was ordained by Bishop Paul Tanner on May 28, 1978, at his home parish of St. Pius V in Jacksonville. He is the first African American priest ordained for the Diocese of St. Augustine and the first from any diocese in Florida to enter a Florida seminary. Msgr. Boddie has also served as associate pastor at St. Paul Parish, Jacksonville, and St. Catherine of Siena Parish in Orange Park. He was appointed pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Green Cove Springs, in 1982 and served there until 1994 before Bishop Snyder appointed him pastor of St. Pius V Parish in time for their 75th Anniversary. He attended St. Pius V Catholic School for six years and three years at Susie E. Tolbert School before attending Bishop Kenny High School, where he graduated in 1970. “I always wanted to be a priest, to celebrate the Eucharist and be with God’s people. I never imagined that I would be named a monsignor after all these years,” said Msgr. Boddie. “I’m so honored by this title, and I’m grateful to Bishop Estévez for his support and confidence in my ministry as a priest of the diocese.”
“This is certainly a great honor, and I am humbled by this announcement. In my 42 years of priesthood, I have had the good fortune to serve the diocese in several capacities and a number of parishes,” said Msgr. Houle. “I’ve had the good fortune to work with Bishops Paul Tanner, John J. Snyder, Victor Galeone and, especially, Bishop Felipe Estévez during his time as ordinary of the diocese.” Msgr. Houle was ordained a priest by Bishop Paul Tanner at St. Patrick Parish in Jacksonville, his home parish. He has served the faithful all over the diocese, including as assistant pastor at Assumption and Holy Family parishes, interim pastor at Mary, Queen of Heaven and Blessed Trinity parishes, and pastor of Holy Rosary Parish. For many years, Msgr. Houle also assisted the pastor at Our Lady Star of the Sea in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship This year’s Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship was presented at the 8th grade graduation program at Christ the King School. Julie’s daughter Kaylee Burke ’10 made the presentation via video to Talon Bordelon who is now a freshman at Bishop Kenny. The scholarship, which was established in memory of Julie Joseph Burke, a 1984 graduate of Christ the King and member of the BK Class of 1988, is awarded annually. Each recipient receives a one-time $1,000 scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition at BKHS. (L-R) Stephanie Coffey, Talon Bordelon’s mother, scholarship recipient Talon Bordelon, and Julie Joseph Burke’s son Ronnie Burke Jr. ’14
Julie’s husband, Ronnie Burke and her parents, Donna and Joe Joseph ‘65, established the scholarship to honor Julie’s life and memory. Julie was continually helping others to achieve their goals, giving to others, and serving her church, school, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining example of God’s love. Talon was selected for the award because he demonstrates many of the same qualities as Julie. Anyone who would like to contribute to the Julie Joseph Burke Scholarship at Bishop Kenny High School is encouraged to contact Sheila Marovich, Director of Advancement, at 398-7545 or advancement@bishopkenny.org.
