Course Name: Computer Applications 7, 1 semester, every other day Grade Level: 7th

Students will learn how to use a variety of Google extensions including Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides. Students will also learn how to use the equivalent for Apple and Microsoft. This class is designed to give students the skills they need in computer operations for work in their academic classes. Students may spend time learning keyboarding skills using Typingclub.org to learn proper posture and fingering skills. Finally, Internet safety and digital citizenship lessons will be combined within the curriculum to promote safe and responsible use of devices.

Course Name: Computer Applications 8, 1 semester, every other day Grade Level: 8th

Students will apply what they learned in Computer Applications 7 using Microsoft, Apple, and Google programs to more advanced digital projects for greater digital and device literacy that can be used in academic classes. Students will also continue to have lessons on Internet safety and learning how to be responsible with one’s own digital footprint. Students will have more intensive lessons on keyboarding using Freetyping.net and will be expected to reach a keyboarding goal of 30 net words per minute with no more than three errors. Finally, students will also learn about the impacts of computing, computer thinking, network and system design, as well as cybersecurity.

Course Name: Introduction to Coding, 1 year, 1 credit Grade Level: 9th and 10th

Students will be introduced to basic coding and effective password protection skills. Students will first learn the basics on command structures for computer programs by working in groups to create “A People Program” and explain their results. Online learning programs include but are not limited to Code with Google, Python, Processing and Scratch, and Code.org. Earbuds or headphones are required for the course.

Course Name: Sports and Entertainment Marketing/Character Education, 1 year, 1 credit Grade Level: 11th - 12th

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of marketing skills as they apply to the sports and entertainment world. This course will assist students as they prepare for college-level business programs. There will be a unit on studying character education including what defines a person’s character and how to make a positive and effective difference in today’s society.

Course Name: Broadcasting & Journalism, 1 year, 1 credit Grade Level: 11th & 12th

This course is an elective for students who would like to explore the world of broadcasting and journalism. Classes are divided into small groups who take turns producing the school news broadcast known as BGTV. Students learn how to write news stories and produce segments. Students also learn about broadcasting formats and how to create a newscast, upload news to the teleprompter, and properly segue between events. Each daily broadcast includes a daily prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, school news, sports, weather, and the day’s lunch menu. Students are assigned writing, video, and audio projects throughout the year. In addition to reporting the news, lessons in broadcasting also include learning about camera angles, remote broadcasts, interviewing skills, and choosing the correct microphones. Students gain an understanding of the difference between mono and stereo audio as well as their uses. Students will learn how to properly use lighting and a green screen for Chroma keying newscasts and special videos. Students also assist other teachers and their classes who have special projects throughout the year, including creating the school-wide Advent and Lenten Penance Services. Broadcasting is a very hands-on class using professional cameras, audio, and video software.
