A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Present, Anticipating the Future “And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit...” It is with these words from the Acts of the Apostles that Archbishop Vigneron begins his pastoral letter, Unleash the Gospel. The Archbishop points out that Jesus Christ is pouring out the Holy Spirit and forming the Church of Detroit anew as we answer the call to be joyful missionary disciples. As we begin this new school year, we as a community are dedicated to joining with Archbishop Vigneron in unleashing the Gospel and undergoing a “missionary conversion.” It is our goal and vocation to assist our students on their journey of faith. We seek to help them grow in their relationship with Christ as we help them to know and accept that they are beloved sons and daughters of God. Each member of our community comes with unique gifts, differing needs, and qualities that help to form the Body of Christ at BFC. Our administration, teachers, and staff have answered the call to unleash the Gospel, to proclaim the Good News, to form disciples and evangelizers for a new Pentecost as they minister to our students and the Foley Family.
Catholic education that BFC has to offer. I am most appreciative for their trust and commitment. Because of their dedication and the generosity of our benefactors and friends, BFCHS continues its mission of forming future missionary disciples following the example of Christ. As President, I am excited about this school year and the potential it holds for all of us, friends and family of Bishop Foley Catholic High School. I trust that you will continue to join us in the mission. Through your ongoing support, both prayerfully and financially, we can continue to respond to the call placed upon us by Christ, the Master Teacher. In this new school year of 2017-2018, thank you for all that you do to help us in this pursuit. Your prayer and support continues to make this happen.
Our scripture theme that guides our decisions this year comes from the 25th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, the Last Judgement, in which the Lord points out that whatever we do for those least we do for him. “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers (and sisters) of mine, you did for me” (Mt.25:40). It is our aim to help our community respond to the needs of one another with kindness, compassion, and care. To be a blessing, not a burden. To bring hope, not hurt. To build up, not tear down. To do for one another as we would do for Jesus.
May God bless you,
Rev. Gerard J. LeBoeuf President
I am grateful to our grandparents (members of our Sts. Joachim and Anne Society) and a faithful benefactor for the gift of the new statue outside the student entrance. This interactive statue is Christ in disguise. It is entitled “When I Was a Stranger,” taken from the same account in Matthew 25. It is a call to welcome Christ in each other so that no one feels a stranger in our midst. Christ invites us to sit with him, and each other, as we minister to each other’s needs. This is a good time to be part of the Church of Detroit. This is a good time to be part of the Foley Family. Our parents and grandparents make many sacrifices so that their sons and daughters can benefit from the quality

ON CAMPUS Block Party Bishop Foley Catholic kicked off the school year on Sunday, August 20 with a Block Party. Current families and students mingled with faculty and staff, browsed gently used uniforms, enjoyed ice cream, purchased new Foley gear from the Fan Cave, and picked up raffle tickets. The highlight of the night was a game of “Foley Family Feud. It was an exciting game of fun Foley facts as the Newbies took on the Venture Veterans.

ON CAMPUS Admissions Adventures Hello Foley Family! Katie Crombe, BFC Admissions Director here! While summer break was productive and peaceful here in the Admissions Department, nothing beats the excitement of welcoming new students on campus! The Class of 2021 (makes you feel old, right?) has finally joined our school community, and they are already creating friendships, joining clubs and sports, and loving their new classes. As the Freshmen adjust to life at Foley, here in Admissions we have already hit the ground running to promote and recruit the next class! Fall is filled with on-site events, parish visits, information fairs, shadow dates, family tours, applications, and High School Placement Tests. Recently, we have been travelling off campus for High School Information Nights at various Catholic grade schools in the area. These job-fair-style events are a great chance to meet prospective families and share the awesome opportunities at BFC. Our Admissions team has also been visiting local Catholic communities to share information about the importance of Catholic Education. Sometimes, we even run into Foley alumni who are now parents of potential Future Ventures. I love seeing the Foley Family come full circle! In addition to off-site presentations, we recently had over 100 middle school students on campus for one of our major admissions events, the Foley Experience! The Foley Experience is an evening for 6-8th graders to see what extracurricular life is like at BFC. This year, they participated in an activity session such as: Robotics, Drama, Art, Medical Science, Forensic Science, Culinary Arts, or Athletics. Afterwards, they joined our enthusiastic staff and Student Ambassadors to cheer on our Varsity Football team under the “Friday Night Lights” for a true Foley Experience! Preparations for Open House are also in full-swing. Since we usually have around 300 prospective visitors on campus, this is by-far our largest event of the year. Thankfully we have assistance from our awesome teachers, parents, students, coaches, and alumni. If you are interested in stopping by or helping out with the event, let us know at admissions@ bishopfoley.org - we’d love to see you there! While I work to assemble my third class as Admissions Director, I feel blessed to be surrounded by such a supportive Foley Family and to continue to build upon our remarkable Catholic educational community. Thank you and GO VENTURES!

ON CAMPUS Dear Families and Friends: If there is anything I have learned at this stage in my life it is to make sure you tell people how special they are to you. Sometimes we rush though life assuming that others know how much we value them for what they do, say or even their commitment to the community. Yet it is important to take care of one another with our actions and words. Bishop Foley Catholic is blessed to have many dedicated families, friends and alumni that give back to our school on a yearly basis. They give of their time, talents and treasures. One of our many treasures is our Development Council. This year our Development Council is made up of 10 fundraising chair people, half of these members no longer have a student here at Foley. They all continue to plan, organize and give of their time because of their passion for Bishop Foley and the students. Last year, because of their huge efforts, along with your volunteer service, we were able to raise over $150,000 to help us bridge the tuition gap and maintain affordable tuition for all students. I am humbled by your service and dedication on behalf of our students’ and their future. Our school is not unlike other businesses that face major cost increase on a yearly basis. In most cases, tuition alone does not cover all the expenses associated with operating a school. Diocesan parish schools have traditionally received funding from the parish community, while independent private Catholic schools like Bishop Foley Catholic have relied on philanthropic gifts to fund operations. I know that prayers are not wishes, but the voice of our hearts ringing in God’s ears. He listens intently and loves us fiercely. I cannot thank you all enough for your “YES” to financial support and service of Bishop Foley Catholic. With your support we will continue to grow our BFC community and ensure a future filled with hope. Peace and God’s endless blessings, Amy Uebbing Vice President for Advancement

ON CAMPUS Why I Teach… For many of us, there are a select number of teachers that we had growing up, that hold a special place in our hearts as adults. Usually there is at least one teacher that made a profound and positive impact on our lives. The teacher may have had a unique teaching style or given that little nudge to consider a specific career path. For many teachers the chosen career path is truly a calling and passion… it is not done for the money or recognition. This is very true for BFC teachers. They are hardworking, creative, and dedicated individuals who help to make Foley students shine. Monica Katharopoulos Subjects: U.S. History, Criminal Justice, Government, and Sociology Bachelor degree: Michigan State University Teaching certificate: Madonna University Mrs. Katharopoulos is a true Venture and has been at Foley for 16 years. She appreciates the supportive, nurturing, and collaborative environment. Katharopoulos considers herself blessed to be able to work at a school where she is able to balance her work and personal schedule, since she has two young children at Guardian Angels. The most rewarding part of her job is when she discovers she made an impact on former students, sometimes unexpectedly. She has recalled some that reach out a few years after graduation. One student in particular who contacted her, had a challenging home life and appreciated Katharopoulos’ compassion and support that she showed. Ken Pullis Subject: Theology Bachelor degree: Athenaeum Ponificium Regina Apostolorum (Rome, Italy) Mr. Pullis has a diverse background and brings a unique perspective to the classroom. He grew up in a household with nine siblings, all of which were educated in the Catholic schools. Following high school, he pursued an education overseas. While studying abroad, he lived in places such as Rome, Spain, and Chile. While living overseas, he gained a better understanding of how other cultures observe and practice their Catholic faith. He has been fortunate to meet the Pope three times, went to many masses in St. Peter’s Basilica and done mission/seminary work in the U.S., Europe and South America. It is very evident that Mr. Pullis is passionate about theology and his faith. Now that Mr. Pullis is teaching theology, he truly feels that his Catholic education has come full circle. In most cases he tailors his lesson plans around the students and their questions. He receives comments from students that are appreciative and who have been able to deepen their faith with Jesus. The most rewarding part of his job is when he sees alumni making a difference in the world by sharing their gifts and talents with others. ”At Foley, we know that the students are great. I am very proud that they continue their legacy of making a positive impact beyond Foley and now the world is able to see how great they are!”

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Homecoming The September 29 Homecoming festivities were truly full of Venture pride! Pre-game activities included tailgating, live music, spirit shop sales, and a dunk tank featuring Mr. Accavitti, Mr. Hassler, and Ms. Hughes. Halftime featured a blessing of the baseball championship rings, presentation of the distinguished alumni award, homecoming court, and the annual alumni photo.
2017 Distinguished Alum: Frank Demers, ‘91 The annual Distinguished Alumni Award was presented for the first time at the Homecoming celebration on September 29. During his four years at Bishop Foley Catholic, Frank Demers learned valuable and important life lessons. He credits Foley for enabling him to grow mentally, physically, and spiritually. These elements helped pave the way for a solid career foundation, which ultimately is now to serve and protect others. One of the greatest lessons he learned as a student was to always surround yourself with good people. He believes that life challenges are much easier to deal with when you are surrounded by a network of good and supportive people. After graduating from Foley in 1991 Demers went on to Adrian College, where he earned a bachelor degree in criminal justice. He also attended the Oakland Police Academy and received a master degree in technology studies from Eastern Michigan University. Continuing into his professional life, he had a desire to serve others as he started to pursue a career in public safety. Two weeks before graduating from the Academy, he was hired by the City of Farmington. As a police officer for 21 years, he has worked alongside many courageous and dedicated men and women. “My experience at Bishop Foley (Catholic) helped me to develop a foundation of strong moral and ethical character that is so necessary in the field of public safety,” said Demers. “My desire to serve others was also instilled during my time at Foley.”
13
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT Russ Ortisi ‘83 As a student at Foley, Russ Ortisi noticed how the Catholic faith was prevalent everywhere at the school, not just in the religion classes. “I still greatly cherish my time at Bishop Foley. In addition to the great preparation for college and entering into a career, the importance of integrating our Catholic faith into all aspects of our education, and frankly into all of who we are as persons, has had a significant impact on the person I am today,” states Ortisi. He also credits the teachers, past and present, for the impact they had, saying, “The passion that the teachers have is another thing that stands out. Their service at Foley is not just about a job, but about a mission that each one has accepted – that of forming those young people, who are fortunate enough to attend the school, into the best human beings they can be!” After graduating from Foley, Ortisi attended Oakland University and earned a Bachelor of Science in accounting. He always admired his father, who was an accountant, and decided to follow his same career path. Ortisi then went on to earn his MBA with a concentration in International Business. His love for technology took him on the path to working as a Business Analyst. This led to other opportunities at AT&T Systems Leasing, Heller Financial and General Electric and increasing levels of responsibility. Currently he is the Vice President of Information Technology at Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), a not-for-profit trade association that supports the auto industry. In 2011, he responded to a calling that he felt God was guiding him towards. Ortisi began pursuing a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. For many years he felt God was calling him to serve in the church in a special way. He embarked on the journey towards becoming a permanent Deacon, and will be ordained on October 21.
Natalia Petraszczuk ‘96 As a Foley Venture, Natalia Petraszczuk was heavily involved with extra-curricular activities. She was involved with the debate team, served as senior class President and was the captain on both the track and volleyball teams. She credits Foley for helping her establish her first leadership roles and learning how to think quickly articulate her thoughts. After graduating from BFC, Petraszczuk studied International Relations at Michigan State University and graduated from the honors program in 2000. She started her professional career as the Development Director of the Michigan Environmental Council and then moved to EarthShare, a nation-wide nonprofit. At EarthShare, she rose to the position of Managing Director. In 2014, she entered a business startup competition that would change her life and trajectory of her career path towards entrepreneurship. She received validation for her Vizbe concept, an online corporate goal-setting and work/life balance tool, and beat 2,500 international teams to win the Google sponsored Global Start Up Battle. Vizbe has now launched with four corporate clients, and has raised over $300,000 in angel investment and prize money. Besides being an accomplished entrepreneur, Petraszczuk has many achievements, including being honored as EarthShare’s “Sales Employee of the Year” in 2013, attended the Inforum inGage Entrepreneurial & Business Training program in 2015, and completed the elite American Express Leadership Academy. In addition to being an entrepreneur, Natalia is also a certified life coach, motivational speaker, and on-air talent for media.

Your Gift Matters...
"The scholarships I have received at Foley have been a true blessing. I am the fifth of six kids and with all of us receiving a Catholic education, the scholarships have eased the financial burden on my parents. Your donation has helped cut the cost of my education. Plus, I am able to enjoy extra-curricular activities and it has allowed me to participate fully in all that Foley has to offer." Gladys Oster, Senior Class of 2018 Your gift, no matter what size, may make the difference so that a student like Gladys can afford to attend Foley! There are several giving opportunities available. All contributions are tax deductible.
