What Industries Use Powder Coating Most?
From automotive to food equipment — the applications that rely on powder coating and why
By Azfar ·Technical Director
Powder coating has been the dominant industrial finishing technology since it became commercially established in the 1970s. The industries that use it most heavily are not using it out of habit. Each sector has specific performance demands, and powder coating keeps meeting them in ways that liquid paint, plating, or anodising cannot match for the same cost.
The Industries That Depend on It
Automotive and Auto Ancillary
Wheels, chassis parts, brackets, underbody components, exterior trim
Automotive is one of the largest volume users of powder coating globally The reasons are practical: powder coating delivers a hard, impact-resistant film that handles road salt, stone chip, brake dust, and heat cycling without the environmental cost of solvent-based liquid paint. Tier-1 and Tier-2 suppliers run high-speed conveyor lines where the economics of 95% material utilisation matter significantly at production volumes.
In India, the automotive corridor from Chennai through Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Hosur generates enormous demand for job work coating of pressed steel and aluminium components. Most OEM supply contracts now specify salt spray performance, adhesion standards, and approved chemistries explicitly in their engineering documents.
WHY POWDER COATING WINS HERE
Hard film, excellent salt spray performance, no VOC compliance burden, high throughput on conveyor lines, and single-coat application reduces process steps.
Electrical and Switchgear
Enclosures, panels, busbars, switchgear housings, transformer components
Electrical enclosure manufacturers are among the most consistent and volume-heavy users of powder coating in India. The combination of corrosion resistance, dielectric properties, and the ability to achieve precise film builds makes powder coating the standard choice for panel boards, distribution boxes, and switchgear housings.
For high-voltage applications, the dielectric strength of the coating becomes a genuine specification requirement rather than just a nice-to-have. Hybrid epoxy polyester coatings at 80 to 120 microns provide dielectric strength values suitable for many low and medium voltage enclosures. For higher voltage requirements, specialist dielectric coatings are specified.
WHY POWDER COATING WINS HERE
Dielectric properties, consistent film build on sheet metal, hard surface resists abrasion during installation, and hybrid chemistry gives strong corrosion protection in indoor environments
Architectural and Construction
Aluminium windows, curtain wall, facades, gates, railings, street furniture
Architectural aluminium coating is a distinct segment with its own certification framework in Qualicoat. This is one of the few areas where the coating specification is set not just by the client but by international standards that the applicator must be independently audited against. Colour retention, gloss stability, adhesion on anodised and non-anodised aluminium, and corrosion performance are all tested and certified.
In the construction industry more broadly, powder coating is used on everything from structural steel handrails to modular building components to car park barriers. The driver is 02 03
always the same: a tough, durable finish that looks good at installation and keeps looking acceptable for years without ongoing maintenance cost.
WHY POWDER COATING WINS HERE
Wide colour range, 10 to 20 year outdoor service life with correct specification, UV-stable polyester chemistry, Qualicoat certification provides independently audited quality assurance.
Agriculture and Heavy Equipment
Tractors, implements, construction machinery, pumps, valves
Agricultural and construction equipment operates in some of the most demanding conditions a coating will ever face: soil contact, fertiliser exposure, UV, rain, mechanical abrasion, and in many cases seasonal storage outdoors without protection. The expectation is not aesthetic longevity it is corrosion protection and surface integrity under hard use.
Pure polyester at higher film builds (75 to 90 microns) with robust zinc phosphate pretreatment is the standard specification for this sector. Textured finishes are common because they hide minor surface damage better than high-gloss and are more tolerant of handling damage in the field.
WHY POWDER COATING WINS HERE
Handles mechanical abuse better than liquid paint, UV stable, thick film builds achievable in single coat, textured finishes practical for equipment aesthetics.
Domestic Appliances and Consumer Goods
05
Refrigerators, washing machines, shelving, furniture, fitness equipment
Appliance manufacturers were among the earliest large-scale adopters of powder coating precisely because of the economics. High-volume conveyor lines applying a single coat to achieve a durable, consistent finish, with overspray recovered and reused, is significantly more cost-effective than liquid paint at the volumes this sector operates.
Aesthetic requirements are high in this segment. Consumers expect colour consistency, a smooth surface, and a finish that holds up to cleaning products, moisture, and daily handling. 04
Hybrid epoxy polyester for indoor appliances and pure polyester for anything with outdoor or UV exposure are the standard choices.
WHY POWDER COATING WINS HERE
Consistent colour and gloss, single-coat application, high throughput on conveyor lines, no sagging or dripping on vertical surfaces, cost-effective at scale.
Food Processing and Pharmaceutical Equipment
Racks, trolleys, shelving, equipment frames, process components
Food-grade powder coating is a specific and growing application area. Standard powder coatings are not food-safe by default, but formulations developed for food contact applications and compliant with FDA 21 CFR or EU 10/2011 regulations are available and increasingly specified by food and pharma equipment manufacturers.
The performance demands here are different from most industrial applications. Chemical resistance to cleaning agents (often caustic), temperature resistance for equipment that goes through wash cycles, and the ability to be applied without heavy metals or harmful additives are all requirements. Film build is also critical: too thin and the coating is vulnerable to abrasion damage that could contaminate product.
WHY POWDER COATING WINS HERE
Food-safe formulations available, excellent chemical resistance to cleaning agents, no VOC residue in the cured film, hard surface withstands cleaning cycles without degrading.

FACTORY STORY
One of the more interesting enquiries we have had came from a manufacturer of commercial kitchen equipment who had been told by their previous coater that any powder coating would work for dishwasher rack applications. The parts came back after about six months in service with significant coating breakdown, mostly from the combination of hightemperature wash cycles and caustic cleaning chemicals. Standard polyester chemistry simply does not hold up in that environment. What was needed was a food-safe formulation specifically rated for chemical and thermal resistance We sourced the right powder, requalified the pre-treatment for stainless steel racks, and the replacement batch has now been in service for over a year without any issues. The lesson was a straightforward one: food equipment has its own powder specification, and it is not a minor variation on the standard industrial range.
