Dear Friends, Never in my wildest dreams could I ever have imagined that I would have the honor or desire to serve on the Board of the Birthright Israel Foundation, let alone be its Chairman for the past five years. As a child, I hated Sunday school and played hooky as often as I could get away with it. After my Bar Mitzvah, I was certain that my Jewish journey was complete. There was no Birthright Israel and even if there had been, I am not sure I would have had any interest in visiting our incredible homeland. If not for my wife, Denise, and our two children, I probably would not be what I am today: a proud Jew and a proud supporter of Israel. When our family traveled to Israel for the first time in 2009 for our daughter’s Bat Mitzvah, I can say with 100% certainty that “it changed my life.” There is no other way to describe it. I found a new sense of purpose and connection to my heritage and I quickly concluded that I wanted to dedicate my time and philanthropic support to fostering Jewish generational continuity and a love for Israel. In 2011, my wife and I attended our first Birthright Israel Foundation event where we heard a presentation from Sheldon (z’l) and Miriam Adelson about the magic of Birthright Israel and the incredible impact it has on participants. A light immediately went off in my head: If Israel could so profoundly impact my life, imagine what Birthright Israel could do at a scale. From that moment on I knew that I had to be a part of this amazing organization. I was asked to join the Foundation Board of Directors in 2014 and in December of 2016 I was elected Chairman of the Board. Over these last five years, I have seen this organization accomplish so much and grow to new heights and I could not be more proud. Birthright Israel is a strategic asset for the Jewish people and, with the partnership of our President and CEO, Izzy Tapoohi, we re-imagined the structure and operations of the Foundation. We set out to increase our fundraising efforts to grow the Birthright Israel program and we had tremendous success! Our annual campaigns grew substantially as did the number of participants to whom we were able to provide this remarkable gift. Between our galas, local leadership councils and our missions to Israel, we have built an incredible community of donors, supporters and partners. I am grateful to each one of these individuals and organizations, all of whom serve as an inspiration to me and a reminder of how far we have come. While the last two years of my term have involved navigating a global pandemic and the suspension and re-launch of our program, I am still as amazed by Birthright Israel as I was a decade ago. Most of all, I am still hopeful for all that is to come. Birthright Israel delivers an experience that makes one proud to be Jewish and cultivates a deep love for the people, culture and land of Israel. For most, it is a game changer. They, like me, can say: “it changed my life.” So, while my term as Chairman may be ending, Denise and my commitment and dedication to this organization and its mission will remain a top priority. I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to our Board of Directors, Izzy, the Foundation staff, Taglit’s CEO, Gidi Mark, and our colleagues in Israel, for their friendship and all they have done and will continue to do for the Jewish people and the State of Israel. I have no doubt in my mind that Birthright Israel, the brainchild of Michael Steinhardt and my dear friend, Charles Bronfman, was, is and will continue to be the most important and impactful program in the Jewish world. I look forward to passing the torch to our next Chairman, Phil de Toledo, and his leadership team. I know we will be in very good hands. I hope to see many of you at our Annual Gala in New York City on May 17th, 2022 as we honor our co-founder, Charles Bronfman. Thank you for your commitment and support. When I started at Birthright Israel Foundation 5 years ago, it was because of my deep commitment to the Jewish people and the State of Israel and the ability Birthright Israel has in building the same connection for young Jewish adults. Five years later, I am amazed at all this organization has accomplished because of your leadership, partnership, and friendship. You envisioned the infrastructure, the team, and the support needed to guarantee Birthright Israel continues to be the most impactful program in the Jewish world. I refer to you as our "fearless leader" because your leadership transformed our organization and pushed us to “dream big”. Your determination and dedication served as a motivator to not only me but to our Board members, local leadership, and staff who strived to achieve goals that were once out of reach. We have grown our campaign and allowed tens of thousands of participants to form unbreakable bonds to Israel and their Jewish identities. Most of all, despite a global pandemic, you never gave up. You pushed us to continue, and now that our trips are back on the ground, our hard work has paid off. Thank you for all that you have given to our organization. On Birthright Israel and Jewish Continuity For longtime Birthright Israel Foundation Los Angeles supporters Phil de Toledo and his wife Alyce, their everlasting commitment to the program is simple — they want to sustain Jewish continuity. The couple, who each grew up knowing they were Jewish but had very little connection to Judaism, first became involved in the LA Jewish community through the Wilshire Boulevard Temple. Like many new parents, the couple wanted to give their children something they didn’t have, so they became active members in the synagogue with hopes to instill Jewish values and traditions in their family.

Phil said their family’s involvement with the synagogue grew over time. “First Alyce, then I sat on the board and we co-chaired their capital campaign to renovate the synagogue. We even had our first trip to Israel with Wilshire Blvd Temple.” However, the couple’s interest in Jewish and Israel-based causes really accelerated after their youngest son Benjamin began attending Heschel, a Jewish day school in the 6th grade. “The school changed his and our lives,” said Phil.

“Our son Benjamin realized he just loved Judaism and our family got introduced to a whole new Jewish community we had no idea existed.” The family took another step in their Jewish journey when Alyce and Phil were introduced to AIPAC and began attending the annual Policy Conference. “At that point in our lives, we really started to grow our philanthropy focused on Judaism. We focused on Jewish education, the continuity of Judaism and Israel." The de Toledos continued to be philanthropically involved in various Jewish causes so much so they made the decision JOURNEYS • ISSUE 15

in 2014 to make a transformational gift to New Community Jewish High School. The high school is now recognized as de Toledo High School in West Hills, CA. How did Birthright Israel Foundation come into play for the de Toledos? Again, the de Toledos learned from their children. Phil’s son Benjamin became more motivated about Judaism and his older son Aaron interned for AIPAC for three summers and participated in the Birthright Israel Excel program. As Phil shared, he and Alyce went from leading their children to their children leading them as their connections to Judaism and Israel prospered. Birthright Israel was something they knew about and had supported for many years. However, it wasn’t until Phil accepted an invitation from his colleague and member of the Birthright Israel Foundation LA Leadership Council, Simon Mendelson, to attend a presentation with the organization’s Board Chair Tom Stern and President and CEO Izzy Tapoohi that things changed. Having the opportunity to hear first-hand about the impact and educational goals of Birthright Israel, together with Tom sharing his personal story is what truly resonated with Phil. As Phil grew closer to retirement, he knew he wanted to find some meaningful organizations to work with and realized Birthright Israel Foundation hit all his key interests and philanthropic factors.

“It’s all about inspiring young people to see Israel for themselves and more. I wanted young people to physically be in Israel and see it rather than just hearing about it. Plus, Birthright Israel plays both a role in education and Jewish continuity — the program really spoke to me and checked off all the boxes,” said Phil. 5

In January, Phil will begin his first term as Chair of Birthright Israel Foundation's National Board. Currently, Phil serves as Treasurer, Chair of the Finance Committee and a member of the Executive Committee and is involved in Los Angeles as a member of the Advisory Cabinet. We are grateful to Phil's service which plays a significant role in making Birthright Israel trips possible for young adults throughout the US. “The experience can be very transformational for young Jews. You can hear and see how important Birthright Israel is to the next generation. Judaism and Israel mean a lot to my family. We focus our philanthropy almost exclusively on Jewish causes. I believe that by supporting Birthright Israel we can preserve Jewish continuity. We’ll save a percentage from complete assimilation, and that’s a good investment from my perspective.”

BIRTHRIGHT ISRAEL IS BACK! After almost a year and a half of postponed trips due to the pandemic, Birthright Israel is back! We couldn’t wait to see our first groups arrive in May and it was a summer like no other with groups returning to the streets of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Our participants were able to take part in the magic that is Birthright Israel and while it was seamless for them, there was tremendous effort behind the scenes to make their trips possible. We had the chance to sit down with Birthright Israel International CEO Gidi Mark to hear how this miracle came to be.

How did you adjust trips to ensure participants’ safety while also guaranteeing they’d have a life -changing experience? Throughout the pandemic we have remained steadfast in our commitment to prioritizing the safety of our participants and our staff. Though it pained us, we took the highest level of precaution early in the pandemic and canceled trips for thousands of participants for more than a year. When the time was right, we erred on the side of caution and opened registration to individuals who were vaccinated or recovered and vaccinated with at least one vaccine shot. We ensured that all participants presented a negative PCR test which was taken within 72 hours of their departure and took another PCR test again upon their arrival in Israel as well as an antibodies test. We made sure that all of our flights to Israel were direct and planned trips with fewer participants and gave out protective equipment. We also planned more activities outdoors and ensured that trips adhered to the guidelines dictated by Israel’s Ministry of Health. As we have for 21 years, we ensured enjoyable experiences for all of our participants built on the foundation of safety.

Thankfully, through careful planning, the feedback for these trips has been very positive. Trips have been able to take place basically unchanged and participants have told us that the smaller-than-normal, intimate sizes of the groups have made their experiences very enjoyable.

What relationships exist with government agencies that helped you, as an organization, make the best decisions for the program and the participants? Throughout these difficult 18 months and these unprecedented circumstances, we have worked closely and stood side by side with the Prime Minister’s office and Israel’s Health Ministry to address the challenges posed by COVID-19. We are proud of the long-standing relationship that we have with the government and that we further solidified by closely cooperating and sharing resources related to the pandemic. The invaluable expertise of both the public servants from the Ministry of Health and of Birthright staff and advisors is the reason we have been able to safely resume our programming.

What do you think was the biggest lesson you learned navigating trips during the COVID -19 pandemic? Frankly we learned three important lessons. The first lesson is that we need to be less dependent on one single offering and find ways to diversify into other fields that meet our mission such as multiweek experiences (which allow time for quarantine if needed), and online engagement which can continue when there is no travel to Israel. The second is that change is something that should be embraced, not feared. The situation over the last 18 months has been incredibly fluid and the only way we have been able to successfully resume programming has been to roll with the punches. The third lesson is that preparedness is key. Over the past year, there have been many developments that we haven’t been able to predict. However, that did not stop us from planning for as many scenarios as possible. A great philosopher once said, “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity." Our luck in bringing participants to Israel safely during a pandemic has been the result of our tireless preparation and seizing opportunities that became available. Finally, I learned that changes bring new opportunities that you can’t ignore, and new great things are expected to be introduced from Birthright Israel in the near future, due to lessons learned from the pandemic. 77

How have you communicated with young Jews interested in the program during the pandemic knowing that things such as travel plans can change daily? We’ve known throughout the pandemic how important it is to effectively communicate changes and updates to protocol so that potential participants have the most up-to-date information available. That’s how you give them confidence to travel when possible and that’s why we’ve bolstered our social media teams and platforms and continued to meet potential participants where they are. We were the leaders in the market with new updates and announcements of updated entry restrictions and we also kept our Q&A page up to date at all times and created media informative ads that included up to date info about our COVID protocols. Lastly, we leveraged the traditional media, with stories in popular travel publications like Travel + Leisure and Jewish community publications including The Forward and JNS helping us get our message out. The fact that this pandemic is global, and we are all in the same boat, made it easier for people to understand the constant change and be more accepting, being authentic is key. 8

What else do you want to say about how Birthright Israel navigated the COVID -19 situation? One of the biggest things we learned during the pandemic is that you can never take anything for granted. 2020 was set to be a celebration of Birthright Israel’s 20th anniversary year. We had grand plans for celebrations and recognition of the wonderful work of our staff and the invaluable support of our donors over the years. Then, basically overnight, everything came to a halt. We were not sure when trips would resume or frankly, what our future held. COVID allowed us to reflect and reconnect with our cherished donors. It allowed us to get back in touch with Birthright Israel alumni, who have not only gone on to do amazing things professionally, but many of who founded organizations that were specifically designed to help those suffering from the impact of COVID-19. This pause also allowed us to check in with our guides, who have shown so many young people the wonders of Israel and strengthen our relationships with our trip organizers through this rough time. As trips slowly resume, we look forward with optimism but also remember those participants, staff and donors from our past who are the foundation upon which our success is built.

An Invisible Thread : THE UNITY OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE

by J enna Barricklo Picture this: a small, enthusiastic group of seven-yearolds. Each child has a large poster with a collage of a different Israeli city. Then, they take off flying around the room on their way to Israel. This was Hebrew School for me; I was incredibly lucky to grow up in a very active Jewish community with a plethora of Israeli Hebrew School teachers. My love for Israel took off at a very young age. The dreams of my seven-year-old self came true when I landed in Israel as part of Birthright Israel on August 9, 2021. It felt like fate that we had made it here through everything we had endured in the last eighteen months due to the Coronavirus. We were giddy to have made it, but mostly there was an immense sense of gratitude. We were, as our tour guide Eli so lovingly called us, The Last Troopers: one of the last Birthright Israel groups allowed entry into Israel before the quarantine was put back in place. There was a sense of trepidation. We didn’t know what to expect in this new COVID-riddled world. Few of us had traveled at all since the lockdown. However, our incredible

madrichim made our space so safe, and thus, we all felt the support to be open and vulnerable. A large topic of conversation, of course, was the rise of antisemitism in America. We talked about how normal it was to grow up going to synagogue with a police car in front, guarding us. Some members of our trip said they wouldn’t wear their Magen David out in public for fear of being attacked, verbally or physically. We all felt an immense relief and level of safety from antisemitism while being in the Land of Israel. For five days, we welcomed three IDF soldiers for our mifgash. We immediately enveloped and embraced them into our group. Our soldiers showed us Israel through their eyes. Some of my favorite conversations during Birthright Israel were with our soldiers, whether it was on our long walk back from the Kotel, sitting on the bus, or during downtime at our hotel. At Mount Herzl, we asked our soldiers what it was like to have to live in fear of an attack. We couldn’t imagine living in a country at constant war. Their response? “It’s just our lives.” What they couldn’t grasp was: how could we live in America, in fear of being Jewish? We all just looked at each other and had a moment of appreciation for how the other half lives. 11

On Birthright Israel, we visited Yad Vashem the same day as Mount Herzl which made it a very emotional day for all of us. Another girl and I had a particularly difficult time while walking through Yad Vashem and had to take a break. Our soldiers were the first to come and comfort us. At one point one asked, “What are you feeling?” And I said, “Scared.” Her response will stick with me for the rest of my life. She said, “You don’t have to be scared. It is my job to protect not just Israel but you too. We will make sure that this doesn’t happen again.” It was at that moment that everything we had learned on Birthright Israel and about Israel clicked for me. As long as Israel exists, it stands as a symbol for protection for not just Israeli Jews but all Jews. The existence of a Jewish state gives us all a strength, no matter where we live in the world. In the musical, Witness Uganda, the character, Griffin, sings, “There is a long invisible thread, that wraps around my heart and wraps around your head” about his relationship to his colleagues across the world in Uganda. When reflecting on my trip to Israel, this song lyric resonates with me. While American Jews live a world away from Israeli Jews, we lead parallel lives. We are tied together by something that isn’t tangible – an invisible thread. There is an intrinsic connection between us and our IDF soldiers. We walk side by side in our goals, in our dreams, and in our lives as Jewish people. It is thanks to organizations like Birthright Israel that we are able to shorten that thread. We are able to encounter our other halves and become more whole because of them.

Alumnus Daniel Winston called Birthright Israel the 10 most important days of his life. “Birthright Israel did, in fact, create my Jewish identity, something I will never lose sight of again,” he said.

Before Birthright Israel, Abbey Taub feared for the future of the Jewish people, especially “the trajectory of my generation and those to follow.” But during her Birthright Israel trip, the alumna gained hope and peace of mind. “Because of Birthright Israel,” she said, “I am confident American Jews will always stand with Israel.”
