Local election results THE CONSERVATIVE Party has retained control of Charnwood Borough Council after the local elections in May. The Conservatives lost five seats, and Labour gained four.

The borough council has 52 councillors across 28 wards with a total electorate of 132,935. Before the vote on May 2 the make-up of the council was: 41 Conservatives; 9 Labour; 2 Independent Now it is 36 Conservatives; 13 Labour; 1 Independent; 1 Green Mountsorrel has two wards represented by two councillors in each ward. young people to do, more music and more competitions - it’s set to be a brilliant event in 2019 and unbelievably,

it’s still free to visitors!” said spokesman Ross Tomlyn.

He added: “But did you know that behind the scenes REVIVAL is organised by just a handful of people and sadly without support, this may be the last event? If you’d like to help secure the future of REVIVAL, all you need to be able to do is attend monthly meetings, usually on a Monday evening, and have a can-co attitude.

Seventeen-year-old Campbell McFarlane (pictured above) competes with team GB in the sport – last year he won two bronze medals in Germany and he has now been selected for the GB team at the World Championships in Thailand later this year.

In May, Campbell received the ‘Young Most Improved Sports Person of the Year’ at the Lord Lieutenant’s Awards – these aim to recognise young people who have shown dedication, a willingness to help others and for outstanding personal achievements.

Campbell’s Mum Suzie said: “Campbell joined the Soaring Dragons boat club in Loughborough in April 2017 and since then he has come a long way through hard work, dedication and training – it has become a passion for him which we as a family fully support and help fund.

“Cambpell is working hard to help, he is currently studying for his A levels, he wants to become a paramedic and also has two life guarding jobs and is a cover swim teacher, he also volunteers as a young leader for

A representative from the Mountsorrel Community Team reported that the 2019 Revival would feature improvements to the parade, the activities on the Memorial playing fields, new activities on The Green such as donkey rides, trampolines and mini dodgems.

Borough Councillor Leigh HarperDavies reported that there had been 19 incidents in 2018 involving incidents at the Hill Top roundabout that required a visit by the County Council to repair or replace damaged signs. It was agreed to request that a road safety audit of the site be carried out by the County Council.

She reported she had donated her member’s grant to Mountsorrel Heritage Group and Mountsorrel Juniors Girls football team.

Councillors raised the issue of the lack of Police presence in the parish, the number of burglaries that had occurred in the past couple of months,

and the Police office in the parish meeting room being unused for a significant period of time. It was agreed to write to the Chief Constable about the lack of use of the Police room.

A full meeting of Mountsorrel Parish Council was held on March 11.

It was reported that plans to build an apartment block on land near Waitrose Mountsorrel have been refused by Charnwood.

It was reported that three serving councillors would not be seeking reelection at the May elections: Brian Allard, Tom Duffin and David Wilson.

Chairman Steve Haywood thanked them for their service, in particular Cllr Allard who had been a councillor for 55 years.

In public participation, issues regarding parking along Halstead Road during football games and the monitoring of the grounds maintenance contractors were raised. The Council will contact the football club and the police about the parking and will monitor the contractor’s work.

The Council has made a grant of £5000 towards Revival 2019.

The preparation of the Mountsorrel Memorial business plan had been delayed due to the illness of the business consultant.

The accounts for the centre will be published once audited, this is expected to be in September 2019.

The annual general meeting of the parish council was held on May 13.

Cllr Leigh Harper-Davies was elected as chair of the council for the ensuing year and Cllr Paul Harris was elected vicechair.

A member of the public asked the council to explain the circumstances behind the departure of two members of staff at the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre (MMC). It was reported that these details were confidential and could not be discussed at a public meeting. It was confirmed that the two members of staff had submitted letters of resignation.

A member of the public asked when the MMC business plan would be available. It has been delayed due to illness. In response to a question about the chemical composition of weedkiller used by the council’s contractors, it was agreed that glyphosate is not used.

County Councillor Peter Osborne reported there was a pressure on school places due to the amount of new housing being occupied.

Comment was made that the arrangements for parish wards on the village was unsatisfactory, with two wards having one seat and the third having 11.

The issue has been raised with Charnwood.

Former parish councillor Brian Allard was present at the meeting and he was thanked for his long service to the village including 55 years as a parish councillor.

The headteacher at Mountsorrel School Clare Clay said the school was looking at ways it could increase its capacity. She said the school is consistently rated as ‘good’.

Comment was made about the parking problems around the MMC and The Green when an event is on.

Maggie Hunt from Mountsorrel Heritage Group gave a summary of the group’s activities. She said the group’s activities could now be shared more widely with the community now that the group was occupying the first floor of the library.

PC Glen Spiby said the Police are short of staff but that new officers are being recruited. He said there were 541 crimes last year including 29 burglaries.

Antisocial behaviour was down 28 per cent. He said he had carried out speed checks in the village and efforts were being made to reinvigorate Neighbourhood Watch.

Trevor Warren, the works manager at Tarmac, said that work to install a new primary processor at the quarry will begin in four months and that residents will notice a lot of vehicle movements as

New inpatient unit A NEW mental health inpatient unit in Leicester for young people has been given the go ahead.

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) has secured final approval from the Department of Health for its plans to build a new 15-bed mental health inpatient facility for children and young people on the Glenfield Hospital site.

Subject to contract, Interserve Construction will begin work on the new state-of-the-art, purpose-built £8 million unit next month, with a view to opening in August 2020. The current inpatient unit has been temporarily based at Coalville Hospital since 2015.

Paul Williams, Head of Service for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services said: “We are pleased to have been given the final go-ahead for a purpose-built mental health inpatient facility in Leicester. It will help us fulfil our vision to support more children and young people locally, which is so important. We will continue to talk to staff, service users and families about the internal design of the new unit, and will be providing more information and regular updates about the build over the coming months.”

George Overton, Chair of Mountsorrel United Charities, presented the charity report. He said the Relief in Need fund had awarded £167,000 in grants, and that four out of five applicants were successful. The grants, which are means tested, had paid for items such as bedding, furniture and a mobility scooter.

The Educational Fund has made grants of £177,000.

Rev Colin Resch, priest in charge of the Anglican churches, reported that the church buildings were in good order due to the support of the Mountsorrel United Charities’ Church of England Fund. He said there would be celebrations this year of the 175th anniversary of

Chair Leigh Harper-Davis said she thought that crime in the village is getting out of hand. It was reported that views about policing could be passed to the Police Crime Commissioner Willy Bach who was visiting Mountsorrel in June.

Around 60 people attended. The meeting was chaired by Cllr Steve Haywood.

It was reported that two of the MMC rental units had been let and that a rent has been agreed with the tenant of the third unit. Cllr Haywood reported that

Church celebrates anniversary CHRIST CHURCH in Mountsorrel is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.

Gifted by Miss Sarah Brinton and built in the mid-19th Century, Christ Church held its first ever service on 21 July 1844. Since that time, the Church has provided support for generations of parishioners while standing proudly overlooking 'The Green'. To mark this 175th Anniversary, a week of Mission both in and for the community has been planned. The week will begin on Sunday 14 July and organisers hope that many people will come together and join the activities and events.

Mountsorrel Women’s Institute Mountsorrel WI meet every second Thursday of each month in the Parish Rooms at 7.30pm. We have speakers whose talks are varied and very interesting.

For example at our August meeting we have Jeremy Robson talking about The Green Bicycle Mystery and in November a talk about Lady Jane Grey – the forElections. Having not fielded a candidate in the previous election the number of votes cast for me is an encouraging sign for the Liberal Democrats. I would also like to pass on a “thank you” from Marianne Gilbert and Carolyn Thornborow to those in Mountsorrel Castle who voted for them.

Mountsorrel has continued to support Leigh Emmins and John Capleton. I know them both as good people and I would like to offer my congratulations to them and wish them well at a time when financial resources coming down to local authorities are continuing to be squeezed and harder and harder decisions need to be made about what community services can be supported and what cannot. They have a tough task on their hands but I am sure they will represent the best interests of the village.

I would also like to thank the village electorate for their continued trust in me to serve them on the Parish Council. A position of trust I am privileged to hold.

Rosebery Art and Craft Fair Over 25 Leicestershire based artists and makers will be taking part in the second Rosebery Art and Craft Fair in Lougborough at Rosebery Community Centre on Storer Road in Loughborough Sat 15th and Sun 16th of June, 11am - 5pm The inaugural event last October was a huge success with over 500 visitors over the weekend. Among many of the creative disciplines represented this spring will be painting, printmaking, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, photography, digital art, wood crafts, jewellery making, glass, assemblage and wire sculpture. No two artists or makers are alike, with styles varying from complete abstraction to more literal representation and beautifully crafted decorative objects.

The venue is situated on Storer Road, Loughborough LE11 5EQ. There will be plenty of free parking and admission is free. Refreshments will also be available.

New manager at Memorial Centre THE MOUNTSORREL Memorial Centre has appointed a new general manager.

Mr Andrew Hawkey took up his post in April. He said: “I am proud to lead a strong team at the centre in what must be one of the most contemporary and diverse community centres in the country. Both the business mix and structure has developed at a huge pace during the past six weeks, since I started, ensuring long terms plans for growth “The amazing centre hosts an array of community events weekly such as Age Concern, art and language classes, needlework classes and an NHS breast feeding clinic This is only a small selection of the classes or services offered to the local community along with a variety of social events which include a disco for adults with special learning disabilities, physic suppers, barn dances, live tribute acts and shows. Christmas is a hive of activity at the centre with carol concerts, Christmas fairs and fabulous Christmas pantomimes.”

THE MOUNTSORREL Heritage group will be staging their first exhibition this month in their new home at Mountsorrel library.

School’s summer fete CHRIST CHURCH and St. Peter’s Primary School will be holding its annual Summer Fete on Saturday June 29, in the school grounds on Rothley Road, Mountsorrel from 11am to 2pm.

This promises to be a fun filled family day, with lots of exciting stalls and activities.

All funds raised will go back into the school to purchase extra classroom equipment to enhance and vary the children’s learning experiences and also supply exciting outdoor play equipment to encourage healthy, active play and to stretch the children’s imaginations.

Sorrel Youth Café planning new future SET UP 10 years ago, the Sorrel Youth Café is consulting the wider community about its plans for the future. annual grants from Mountsorrel Parish Council and the Mountsorrel United Charities Relief in Need fund John said: “It is recognised that neither the Parish Council or the United Charities can continue to fund the café.

The most practical option to secure the future for the café is for it to be embedded as a community interest business.”

The charity is in discussions with the Co-operative and Social Enterprise Development Agency (CASE) about the formation of a community business that would be supported by CASE funding. If successful, this would require the appointment of new trustees and volunteer supporters.

John said: “The Sorrel Youth Café has been a factor in reducing antisocial behaviour, has provided direct benefit for many tions of our village community.”

The community café is open 9am–2pm Monday to Friday and supports the former Sure Start group and a craft group. The café also hosts the Community Fridge that is run by Charnwood Food Poverty Action.

Youth workers say the nature of youth work is changing as young people are less inclined to ‘hang around’ and use dropin youth facilities, preferring to communicate with their friends from their homes via social media. Youth workers must find new strategies to engage with this group.

The Baldwin Trust, established in 1983, was originally started to provide therapeutic trips for hospital patients.

The boats are operational seven days a week during summer, with trips lasting from one to seven hours. They are moored at Pillings marina in Quorn and at Leicester Marina, Thurmaston.

Spokesman Alisdair Macintryre said: “During the winter months we have been working hard on a maintenance program replacing windows and decking.

We have employed marine engineers for a full inspection and service of our engines. Both boats are mechanically in very good order and are ready for new season commencing in April.

“There are over 290 care homes in the Leicester and Rutland area. During 2018 we carried 25% of them. We want to increase this during 2019.

“Since the start of 2019 we have received substantial donations to support our continuing charitable work of taking the elderly, infirmed and disadvantaged of all ages for day trips on the rivers of Leicestershire.

“We take groups of people from other organisations, such as the WI, bowls clubs, tennis clubs, birthdays and family days out. During 2018 we carried over 2000 clients.

During the month of August, we have school trips from Birstall. We also attend the Leicester Riverside festival in June and the Mountsorrel Revival festival in August, and we attend many more community events in the Leicester area.”

The Baldwin Trust have raised funds for their third boat which has been commissioned and will be joining the fleet later in the season.

The new boat, called Halseyon Days, is a narrow boat which is 68ft in overall length.

“The design of the boat incorporates many features which will enhance the trip experience for all our clients” said Alisdair.

“Special attention has been paid to specific requirements. Getting on and off the new boat will be much easier as the stern is being built with a flat floor with no trip hazards. A new design passenger lift is being fitted to enable easy safe access especially for those passengers with mobility challenges. The 500kg capacity lift is a very safe design which incorporates many features used by the County Council with an automatic lift and wheelchair stops.

“The spacious passenger cabin area is fully insulated and heated to ensure a comfortable trip with multiple radiators.

Large panoramic windows are fitted in the passenger area. They have a ventilation system that enable each window to be adjusted to meet the customers requirements. We have LED lighting and safety slip resistant flooring.

“Tables and chairs seat 12 passengers and can be adjusted to accommodate wheelchair seating. There is also a fully fitted galley with a fridge that provides facilities for cooking simple meals and making hot drinks. There is also a wash-

room / toilet on board.

“The bow has been completely redesigned to enable passengers to take in the benefits of the fresh air and sunshine on those hot sunny days. The 43HP Beta diesel engine is fitted with a hospital silencer to reduce noise.

During 2019 our three boats will carry AED defibrillators.

THE MOUNTSORREL branch of the Townswomen’s Guild is bucking the national trend by continuing to recruit new members.

A spokesperson said: “While many branches nationally are closing due to lack of interest the Mountsorrel branch is going from strength to strength with many of the new members coming from the younger generation.”

The branch is only one of two in Leicestershire the other being Ibstock.

They hold their meetings on the first and third Thursdays of each month starting at 7.30 pm in The Mountsorrel Parish Rooms on Leicester Road. The meetings on the first Thursday normally consist of a talk on subjects ranging from the ‘Air Ambulance’ to ‘Black Cats and New Moons’ while the meetings on the third Thursday tend to be social meetings such as ‘Craft nights’ and ‘Winter Puddings’.

“Obviously there will be tea and light refreshments included so if you are bored with continuous repeats on TV and would like some company and a laugh please come along you will be made very welcome” said the spokesperson.

Watermead Run THE WATERMEAD Challenge charity run reaches the milestone of it’s tenth year in 2019.

The run is on the flat tracks around the lakes of Watermead Park near Syston, run over both 3 and 5 mile distances.

Race Director Chris Battye of the organisers, Wreake Valley Rotary Club, said: “The run is an increasingly popular event which appeals to runners of all abilities and offers the opportunity to achieve a personal best time. In 2018 we had over 400 runners taking part.

THE FRIENDS of the Charnwood Forest welcomed Mr Peter Tyldesley, Director of the Bradgate Trust, who gave a talk on the subject of ‘Colourful Characters of the Bradgate Park’.

Certainly some of their names were equally colourful. For example, in the reign of Edward the Confessor the land was owned by a Mr Ulf. Later it was owned in turn by the Beaumont family, the de Quincys, de Ferrers and lastly the Greys – rather a let-down namewise, it would seem, but they stayed for 500 years. In 1928 the Park went up for sale and bought by Charles Bennion, who gave it to the people of Leicestershire.

The first mention of a deer park dates form 1241, when it was much smaller than it is now. Over the years bits of land were added and other bits taken away – usually to pay for debts incurred by the family. Cropston reservoir occupies one of the latter ‘bits’.

About the time it passed to the people the council had added more land, and as well an agreement was reached with the trustees of Bradgate Wood to bring that under the Bradgate Trust as well.

The house was the ambition of the son of Elizabeth Woodville who was one of those powerful women ultimately of the royal household. It was her grandson who finally finished the project in about 1520. It was occupied until 1732 when the new owner prefered one of his other houses.

The Grey family were one of those moderately successful families of their age. They seemed to be politically adaptable, changing sides several times during the Civil War, though not always at the right time. They were good at having their lands confiscated, then restored to them. They slowly accumulated titles, often it seems by marriage, and they were good at not producing heirs. This latter strength meant that often distant relatives occupied Bradgate in the absence of an heir, and did result in 1732 when the relative preferred his current dwelling to Bradgate House.

The outstanding name, of course, is Lady Jane, the ‘9-days queen’, though for four days before she was proclaimed the country was in limbo. This was thanks to Henry VIII declaring children of his previous marriages illegitimate.

Nobody knew where they stood when he shoffled off. Mary stepped in and order was restored. At this moment the Greys demonstrated their political versitility which resulted in yet another family talent – having their heads chopped off.

The last Grey of note seems to have been George Harry (1828-1883), who had a bit of a gambling problem; he took up owning race horses, and even had a race track around Old John tower.

He actually lived in Field Head House, and when he died he left it to his widow to restore the family fortunes.

The ‘Friends’ meet in the Woodhouse Eaves village hall at 7.30pm once a month as well as organising visits in the summer.

Police investigate tool thefts DETECTIVES ARE investigating a series of theft from tools and criminal damage which happened in the Charnwood area on May 2, including from a location in Mountsorrel.

At around 1.45pm in Charnwood Road, Shepshed, a masked man stole some tools which were outside an address. He was seen to get into a grey BMW. At around 2.55pm, a masked man was seen attempting to break into a van in Wood Lane, Quorn. He made off in a grey BMW 3 series. Damage was caused to the van and nothing was taken.

At around 2.45pm, tools were stolen from two vans parked in Bond Lane in Mountsorrel. Four masked men were involved and made off in a grey BMW 3 series estate.

At around 3pm in Swithland Drive, Rothley, a member of the public witnessed what he believed was a crime in progress involving four masked men in a grey BMW. They caused damage to his vehicle before making off.

Officers were deployed and carried out an area search but unfortunately the offending car and its occupants were not traced.

Enquiries are continuing in the reports and officers would ask anyone who may have information to get in touch.

Detective Constable Steve Reed, the investigating officer, said: “We believe from the similarities throughout these incidents, they were committed by the same group of people and are being linked.

“We are carrying out a number of enquiries including obtaining witness

statements and reviewing CCTV at all of the locations.

“While we appreciate these incidents may be of concern, please be reassured that they will be fully investigated and everything is being done to catch the people responsible. Local officers will be carrying out proactive reassurance patrols in the area and are available to speak to anyone with any concerns they may have.

“If you have any information about these incidents, the vehicle used or the people responsible, please contact police, no matter how small the information may seem.”

Midsummer charity concert of favourites A MIDSUMMER concert in Rothley will feature a medley of favourites from opera, shows and musicals, all raising funds for homeless people in Leicestershire.

‘West End to Covent Garden’ is the theme of the concert, held at 7pm on June 29 in Rothley Parish church.

A spokesman said: “Eleven-strong professional singing group Octave are bringing a selection from their practiced repertoire to delight a summer audience, made all the sweeter with wine and nibbles. Operatic favourites like Nessun Dorma and the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves may be included along with popular renderings like Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. All sort of songs from the musicals are likely to appear from the works of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and selections like Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera.”

The concert will be hosted by members of Rothley Mothers Union and all

proceeds will go to the Mothers Union Leicestershire Homeless Fund. The Mothers Union was formed by an Anglican clergyman's wife over 140 years ago to support marriage and family life. Members' prayers and fundraising activities continue to further this cause locally, nationally and worldwide to the present day.

The concert on June 29 is specifically to help and support Leicestershire people and families who find themselves homeless. These funds are administered by the Mothers' Union, Leicester Diocese.
