Bargains at Birstall yard sale

New recreation area WORK HAS started on landscaping an open space next to Hallam Fields school that will be a community recreation area when finished.

A spokesperson for Charnwood Borough Council said: “Jelson Homes Ltd has started preparatory landscape works to the open space adjacent to Hallam Fields Primary School, Birstall. This is part of the final phase of the Hallam Fields development, which was granted planning permission in 2003.

“When complete, there will be a large area of open space for residents to enjoy, including opportunities for recreation, provision of children and young people’s play equipment and a multi-use games area. Tree planting and habitat creation

“Despite the weather, it was a lovely day for all and a lot was raised for many charities,” said organiser, Sharon Bingham.

She added: “I was at the Co-op selling maps with Adrian Walker who is the community fundraiser for the Co-op. Adrian sorted out a guesshow-many-pens-in-the lunchbox to win a hamper from the Co-op.

The spokesperson added: “These pitches will be available for organised sport once final pitch preparation works have been completed. The Council is in discussions with local sports clubs about

room, kitchenette and changing rooms for two teams and officials. A locking door between the school and the changing rooms means the school building will remain secure when the changing rooms are used by the community.

Once the sports pitches and open space are finished, the site will become a destination for visitors, with some arriving by car. In May, signs were erected in the school car park stating that car parking was for staff and school visitors only. Some residents are worried this will result in a large number of cars parking on residential streets.

A spokesperson for the Lionheart Academies Trust said: “The car park signs have been put up because vans and other vehicles were being parked overnight and some were being left there throughout the day, creating a risk that staff or parents would not be able to use the car park, which is intended for school use.”

Sharon said: “Two lovely stallholders raised a total of £60 for Jade’s retreat, Brenda and Joan held a stall for Birstall and Wanlip Mothers Union raising an amazing £450, and Mary at Birstall Methodist Church held stalls for Christian Aid and raised £295.”

Elza retires after 23 years with Co-op Funeral Care HAVING ORGANISED the funerals for countless families in the village, Birstall’s Elza Gibson has retired from her role as a funeral administrator.

Elza (64) has worked for Central Co-operative Funeral Care at its Birstall branch for 23 years, organising every detail of a funeral.

She said: “To know you have helped someone is very rewarding, you only have one chance to get things right, so attention to detail is very important.”

Pam Sheppard, senior funeral director at Central England Co-op Funeral Care, said: “Elza has been with us for over 23 years and is well known in the village of Birstall and a big part of the community, she has made many friends and served many families over the years.

We wish her a long and happy retirement.”

Elza was diagnosed with Covid-19 in January, was very unwell for several weeks, and brought forward her retirement as a result. “It made me reflect on things,” she said.

“It has made me cherish things more, and I want to take things more

Elza’s role at the Birstall branch will be taken on by Nina Brown.

VE Day party at care home

A BIRSTALL care home celebrated Victory in Europe day with a special event for residents.

Cedar Mews on Hallam Fields Road hosted a street party-themed event for residents so they could reminisce and celebrate the historical day.

Staff decorated the home with flags, balloons and homemade bunting for the occasion and residents were treated to VE day themed treats specially prepared by the care home’s staff.

The care home team also put 1940s music on to encourage residents to tap their feet and share memories of the day.

Free parking ADDITIONAL FREE parking is being provided in Loughborough town centre on a temporary basis to support local businesses while a regeneration scheme continues.

Charnwood Borough Council is introducing free parking for up to an hour during the day, free parking in the evenings and free parking on Sundays at Beehive Lane Car Park from Monday May 24.

Cllr Jonathan Morgan, Leader of Charnwood Borough Council, said: “The Council is committed to supporting local businesses and that’s why we are introducing this free parking offer to support local traders.”

Free parking for up to one hour will be introduced at Beehive Lane Car Park on May 24. Free parking will also be available after 6pm every day and all day on Sundays at Beehive Lane.

The measure will remain in place until further notice and be reviewed regularly.

From pints to plants for Birstall milk float BIRSTALL’S ELECTRIC milk float was retired in 2018 but has been given a new lease of life by milk float fanatic John Schofield.

It is now being driven around the county to events where horticulturalist John sets up a plant stall on the back of the float. In May, it was hired by a TV company filming a TV programme.

John spotted the 50-year-old vehicle on the grounds of a property where he was working; it was love at first sight –

he was taking pictures of himself sitting on it.

“They are so iconic, you can’t get another vehicle like it,” he said.

After repeatedly asking about the vehicle, the owner decided to gift it to

him, and it has been given a new lease of life with John.

High uptake of Covid-19 vaccine in Birstall JUST 0.7% of patients registered at Greengate Medical Centre have declined a Covid-19 vaccine, while 80% of the adult practice population have had their first dose.

Sara Mitchell, assistant practice manager, said: “We would like to again thank all of our staff at Greengate Medical Centre who have been working tirelessly alongside all of their peers, both at the surgery and at the Loughborough vaccination hub.

Rugby club news APRIL TURNED out to be a big month for Birstall RFC. Not only have we had many new members join the club, with over 40 players turning out every Thursday for Touch rugby, but a new sponsor has come on board, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

Pie Drop, who deliver Brockleby Pies straight to your door, have proved to be a very popular addition. After one touch rugby session, we managed to sample the tasty produce, which arrived in multiple flavours. It’s safe to say it didn’t take us much convincing to welcome the new sponsor.

But as much as we enjoy rich pastry filled produce, we begin to turn our attention towards the new season, and we can announce our pre-season fixtures.

South Leicester (Home) - Thursday 12th August Melton Mowbray (TBC)- Thursday 19th August South Leicester (Away)- Thursday 26th August Fitness sessions on Tuesdays now run alongside Touch Rugby on a Thursday.

The eight-week fitness programme is designed to bond the squad back together, as well as turning us into the beasts we need to be.

Afterwards, there will be a short break before we rip into our official pre-season training starting on Tuesday July 6. Our Head Coach Lewis Glover and his team have done a brilliant job planning the route map for our return to playing. The overall plan allows us to slowly but purposefully build up our preparedness for rugby, giving us the best chance possible to be competitive.

When it comes to joining the club, we’re always welcoming new people who want to be a part of our journey and represent the Birstall community. Kyan racing his way to success BIRSTALL’S Kyan Gohill is no ordinary teenager.

At 14, he owns his own local car wash, has just started an eBay business selling karting accessories, is a Charity Ambassador for Paces and Chequered Flag Motorsport supporting Cerebral palsy and motor neurone disease sufferers and spends his weekends as a professional racing driver.

Having a passion for racing, Kyan, a student at Ratcliffe College, took up professional karting seriously in 2019, joining a team at the Whilton Mill race track in Daventry and travelling around the UK to compete.

Despite the disruption to the 2020 and 2021 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Kyan has jumped back into the race seat, showing great pace and promise for the remainder of the year. This year will see Kyan compete in two of the UK’s biggest tournaments, the Ultimate Kart Championship and the British Championships, where the UK’s top drivers come together to compete.

Kyan says his interest in motor-

sport was inspired by watching Formula 1 and his interest in supercars.

He is aiming high for the future and would love to get behind the wheel of an F1 car. He plans to start by gaining further experience racing in either the Fiesta or Ginetta Juniors in 2022, two categories ideal for racers coming from pro-karting. Once he gains experience, he aims to move to F4 with support from his current and future sponsors.

He said: “My dream ambition is definitely racing in Formula 1 or single-seat racing. What I enjoy most is the speed and adrenaline of racing and overtaking my competition.”

Kyan has been appointed an ambassador for two charities, Chequered Flag Motorsport and Paces, both helping sufferers from Cerebral Palsy and motor neurone disease.

Cllr Grimley joined the Conservative Party at the end of 1980’s, and was a Tory activist in the 1990’s, campaigning against development at Aylestone Meadows and a large road scheme, before being elected in 2011 to Charnwood Borough Council, where he has been a member of the planning committee for 10 years.

These are imposed by Highways without consultation. These are being removed shortly. A number of people have expressed that the 30mph speed limit should be retained. There will be a public consultation on this before a decision is made about this.

“As lockdown restrictions ease, I would like to meet more residents face to face. I am happy to discuss any matter with residents to see where I can assist as County Councillor. A number of people have contacted us about Membership cards since the last ones issued expired at the end of March.

The Covid‐19 restrictions disrupted our normal pattern of working but we were able to issue cards in 2020 for those subscriptions that we received. However, with our normal distribution system out of action, some cards may not have reached their final destination.

We have not distributed Subscription envelopes for 2021 and will have to consider the best way forward, now that things look as if they are getting back to normal.

At the moment we have sufficient funds in the bank to keep functioning as we have been during the pandemic.

The last issue of Membership cards remain valid despite having the March 2021 expiry date printed on them.

Is Someone being Scammed?

Elderly or otherwise vulnerable people are more likely to be caught in scams that involve repeated theft over weeks or even months. Once a criminal realises that the person has been ‘hooked’ they return on a regular basis until the coffers run dry or somebody else realises what is happening.

Catalytic Converter Theft Theft of catalytic converters is a continuing problem. They are expensive items to replace and their removal usually causes additional damage to the vehicle.

High wheelbase vehicles such as 4×4s and SUVs are at greater risk, because they are easier to crawl under, but thieves also jack up vehicles to get easy access underneath.

If possible, always park your vehicle in a locked garage during the hours of darkness. If you see anybody acting suspiciously around parked cars and vans, especially by crawling under them, call the Police on 999 immediately.

Canvassing Traders This is the time of year when we are likely to employ someone to do work on our houses or gardens, so it is also a good time for traders to canvas for work. Most of these are honest, offering genuine services but, as many people have learned to their cost, there are those who are not.

It does not cost much to produce professional‐looking leaflets for distribution, so there are a few things to look out for if you receive one.

Check that they give a fixed landline number beginning with 01, 02 or 03 rather than just a mobile phone number beginning with 07.

Check that they have a local address that you can visit and verify. Beware of business centre ‘accommodation’ addresses.

Ask for the contact details of other people who have employed them, so that you can get their opinion directly on the quality of the work done.

Any genuine trader will not mind giving this kind of information, while the dishonest ones will back away when you start asking searching questions.

Always get several quotes for work that you plan and take your time before deciding to place the order. Rogue traders will try to get their hands on your money as quickly as possible and will make sure that you cannot trace them if you have a complaint.

Parking Problems The majority of the streets in Birstall are not subject to yellow line or other restrictions and anyone is allowed to use a parking space on a first‐come‐first‐served basis, even if it is directly outside your house. This can be frustrating, especially if spaces are scarce, and can sometimes lead to heated disputes.

A pavement is deemed to be obstructed when a vehicle is parked on it and there is less than 1.2 metres clearance, forcing pedestrians or mobility scooters into the road to get past.

Parking enforcement was once the sole concern of the Police but responsibility is now shared with, in our case, Charnwood Borough and Leicestershire County Councils. However, the Police still have powers to deal with dangerous parking.

Helping our community THE HELPING Our Community LE4 Birstall and Scrubs group have been continuing to support local good causes and are holding a craft sale on June 6.

Co-founder Rosie Rollings reports: The Community Group has again responded to a request for help for an individual fleeing domestic violence.

The response was such that the food items we had were far more than what was needed. The scrubs team made bags and they were filled with essential items for a few days, food and toiletries. Children’s bags were also made and filled with treats, colouring books and a soft toy. A total of 40 “buddy bags” were made and gifted to Women’s Aid. Thank you to everyone that contributed.

Meals Following the payments received for Christmas meals, there was an amount left over as some people paid for two. Ruth of Lambourne Café has ensured that anyone she’s made aware of who has left hospital or has been unwell has received a hot meal. We also have a member of the community

Leicester told to build more houses LEICESTER CITY’S draft Local Plan, which included 660 new homes off Greengate Lane and 58 on Birstall golf course, has been derailed after the government said it must find 35% more houses.

Leicester City’s plan, currently in limbo after the government made the announcement in December, contained a target of 29,104 new homes by 2036.

This must now be increased by an additional 10,000 new homes.

A Leicester City Council spokesperson told the Birstall Post: “The production of the local plan has been delayed by the government's unexpected decision to

apply a 35% uplift to Leicester City Council’s housing target last December, soon after consultation on the draft plan had concluded.

“This has significant implications for our plan, which we need to work through carefully. Consultation on the submission draft has been delayed and is now likely to take place in late 2021 or early 2022. “ In December 2020, the government announced a new standard method for the calculation of local housing need, which included a 35% uplift for the 20 largest cities and urban areas in England, including Leicester.

Imposing a 35% uplift on cities means the government can meet its target of delivering 300,000 homes per year without increasing the housing targets within rural areas.

Inside Housing magazine reports that local authorities most affected by the changes have described the government’s plans as “unrealistic.”

A spokesperson for Leicester City Council told Inside Housing: “We are very concerned by the government’s recent decision to impose this huge uplift on Leicester, which seems to have been made without any assessment of demographic, market needs, delivery or capacity issues.

“In December, we concluded a consultation on our draft local plan which confirmed that almost 8000 of our previous 2036 target of 30,000 homes could not be accommodated within the tightly drawn city boundary. The impact of the new uplift increases the 8000 figure to around 18,000 additional homes over the plan period.

“It will not be possible to accommodate anything like the scale of development within the cities boundary while meeting local and national policy imperatives.”

Leicester City Council’s draft Local Plan was published in January 2020 and put out for public consultation which ended in December 2020. It contains plans for: 660 new homes and a 1200 place

Since restrictions have eased a little, we have recommenced socially distanced walks around our local area.

In May we have a walk and a talk on the history of St Peter's Church, Belgrave.

We hope to do some litter picking in July and are planning a canal trip and more walks during the summer. Throughout the pandemic, our ladies have been using their crafting skills to collaborate with Birstall NHS Scrubs and the Birstall Community team and their excellent work.

As always, the WI remains flexible and adapts to changing circumstances, and we hope to commence meetings again in September, although the venue may have to temporarily change before we can return to our usual home at the British Legion.

Cricket club news CRICKET BACK at last - Howzat!

New club secretary Paul Oldcorn and his wife Kelly have worked very hard to get the club ready for the new season. In these strange times, the changing rooms are not allowed to be used and also the bar is out of bounds, but table service has been available to club members.

On the pitch, the teams have had contrasting games. The 1st XI has come up against strong sides in Oakham and Rothley and suffered two defeats, meanwhile its runs galore for the 2ndXI. Setting Uppingham 232 after runs from A Pandya 87, I Bartlett 47 and G Ager 42 no. They restricted the hosts to 203 for 9. The following week saw a fantastic game of cricket as a very good Aryans side scored 238 for 7 and Birstall getting the winning runs with two balls to spare. Once again, I Bartlett 63, J Rai 49, and skipper G Ager 47 were among the runs. The third week of the season was a total washout.

Cedars’ exhibition YEAR NINE art students at the Cedars Academy have produced work for an online art gallery on the theme of food.

Cath Kinder, from the Cedars Academy, said: “We wanted to be able to show off pupils' amazing efforts, as it is obviously very hard to have a real exhibition at the moment. Pupils have worked

exceptionally hard throughout this difficult time. We are very proud of them.”

She added: “They have studied a range of artists, who work in different mediums. They are then able to focus on an area they are interested in. Some have chosen to look at still life or experimented with painting styles. Cupcakes have been a favourite theme!”

Bowls club warms up club members closer together. During April and May, we organised club events that were incredibly popular and well attended. They acted as a great warm-up and an enjoyable way of meeting old friends. For June, Covid restrictions have been lifted, and matches against other clubs are underway. We are also looking forward to our annual bowls tour, which is always a popular event, and I am pleased to say, generally draws in bowlers from quite a few other local clubs.”

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner How to support someone with cancer Being investigated for or told you have cancer feels like the weight of the world just landed on you. Whether or not it is related to a cancer diagnosis we have all had that ‘weight of the world’ feeling at some time in our lives and sadly many have been further troubled by the response of family and friends. It might be the lack of response, being avoided, having someone cross the road to avoid you even, or by seemingly inappropriate comments or well-meaning advice that just doesn’t help.

One thing we can be sure of, we all need support, we are humans being, we live in groups and families and thrive on interaction. At our most troubled times, having appropriate support, advice and comments can be extremely helpful.

In this months Birstall BAG’s section, we would like to offer some guidelines for all of us to consider if we have a friend or family member going through troubled times such as a recent cancer diagnosis.

What should I say?

At first, you might feel unsure about what to say or do, being open and sensitive to how they are feeling is what most people need.

Knowing you are there for them will really help.

Every person with cancer has a different experience so try not to assume how they might be feeling. They may feel happy one day and sad the next. Try to be mindful of their mood.

Remember that they might not want to talk or think about their cancer all of the time. Having a normal conversation about everyday things and sharing

a joke can sometimes be very welcome.

Try not to take it personally if they don’t want to talk about their cancer and respect their need for privacy or to have some quiet time.

How to talk to someone with cancer Top tips from patients This must be a tough time for you.

I'm here for you if you want to talk.

I know staying positive can be hard, how are you really?

Do you want a lift to your appointment?

I can drop some dinner over tonight.

Emotional Support Research has shown that emotional support from family and friends can make a big difference to the quality of life of someone with cancer.

People are often afraid of saying the wrong thing to someone with cancer. If you are open, honest and show your concern, then you can be a great support. Here are some tips that might help you.

Do: Say if you feel awkward – it acknowledges the situation rather than pretending it’s not happening.

Give them a friendly hand squeeze or a hug – it can go a long way.

Ring them up, send a card, note or

text to say you’re thinking of them.

Let them know that if they want to talk, you’ll be there to listen - then make sure you are available.

Respect their need for privacy.

Offer support throughout the whole diagnosis - at the beginning, during and after treatment.

Share a joke or laugh with them if this seems appropriate.

Keep your relationship as normal and as balanced as possible.

Try not to: Say you know how they feel – we can’t ever know exactly how someone with cancer feels.

Tell them to ‘be strong’ or ‘be positive’ – it puts pressure on them to behave a certain way.

Take things personally if they seem angry or upset or don’t want to talk.

Offer advice that they haven’t asked for.

Compare their situation to somebody else you know; each person’s experience with cancer is unique.

Being a Good Listener A good listener tries to be aware of someone’s thoughts and feelings as much as they can. You don’t need to have all the answers. Just listening to a person’s concerns or worries can be hugely helpful.

A good listener tries to really tune in and listen to a person in the moment.

Listening is an important part of providing emotional support.

Here are some tips on how to listen well.

Try to keep the setting private, relaxed and with few distractions.

Maintain eye contact but don’t stare.

Let the person with cancer lead the conversation and try not to interrupt.

Give your full attention to what they are saying.

If you’re finding it difficult or upsetting don’t change the subject – say how you feel, this can prevent any awkwardness.

If they cry, don’t try to cheer them up. Reassure them that it’s OK to be sad and that it’s a normal response to what’s happening to them.

A friendly touch of the hand can help but if they pull away, give them space.

Try not to give advice unless they have asked for it.

Don’t use humour unless they have used it themselves.

Silences are OK, don’t feel like you have to fill them with words.
