Bagging bargains at yard sale

HUNDREDS OF visitors pottered around the village bagging bargains at this year’s Big Birstall Yard sale.

Bargain hunters came from as far afield as Hull and Derby for the event, now in its fifth year.

Organiser Fiona Barnes said: “ It was amazing once again to see the village so buzzing on Yard Sale day.”

Traffic delays TRAFFIC DELAYS are expected on the Loughborough Road between Red Hill Island and Lidl while the Environment Agency creates a culvert at the bridge.

The work will require a lane to be closed from July 2017 to April 2018.

Traffic flow will be controlled by temporary traffic lights.

In the spring of 2018 the road will be completely closed for six weeks.

The Environment Agency are constructing a new floodwater bypass culvert at the Loughborough Road bridge, which spans the River Soar.

The new 5metre-wide culvert will significantly increase the amount of floodwater that can pass under the bridge. Land on both sides of the bridge will also be lowered to create larger and more efficient natural floodplains.

One complete the scheme will reduce flood risk to over 600 homes and businesses in the Belgrave area.

The project requires service cables and pipes to be diverted to make way for the new flood culvert. This will involve work by five major utility companies.

The Loughborough Road Bridge project will also see improvements made to the riverside footpath to create a safer and more attractive route for people travelling by foot or bike. The culvert itself will form part of a new riverside cycleway between Thurcaston Road Bridge and Melton Brook.

Riverside wildlife habitat will be improved and new ponds and wetland areas created which will provide additional protection against flooding.

The £5million project is the latest phase of a major programme of flood risk management delivered by the Environment Agency. The six-year programme of work is backed by £33million of government cash and will help protect thousands of homes in the city from the risk of flooding. This includes major landscaping parts of the river floodplain, installing new culverts, cutting back overgrown trees and removing obstacles to the flow of the river.

Anger at rising levels of car crime POLICE ARE stepping up patrols in the village following a spate of vehicle crime in June.

Vandals damaged 17 cars over the two weekends June 16-17 and 24-25 in the Wanlip Lane, Gwendolin Avenue and Acacia Avenue area.

Wing mirrors were kicked off, car windows smashed and vehicle bodywork was dented.

In a statement posted on facebook, PC Dave Jaeckels said: “The Birstall & Wanlip beat team are aware that there is currently a lot of anger in the community following the recent incidents of damage that have occurred in the village.

We would like to re-assure people that we are taking these incidents extremely seriously and we have already completed numerous enquiries to try and find witnesses who can identify the people responsible, including house to house enquiries, checking of any CCTV and speaking with the victims who have had their property damaged.

“We have been given various names for the youths suspected of being involved and are currently in the process of speaking with them in the presence of their parents to see what information we can get from them. We are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed these incidents as obviously we want to prosecute the people responsible, however ultimately this will depend on whether there is sufficient evidence to do this.

“There is talk that the police are not interested in low level crime, however this could not be further from the truth.

Club making progress on and off the pitch AFTER A successful first season for Birstall United FC in the East Midlands counties league, which saw the club finish in third place, Chairman Gary Fox is looking forward to continuing development for the Meadow lane outfit both on and off the pitch. to deal with both crime and antisocial behaviour in the village, however we also have numerous other responsibilities, including managing vulnerable people in the community, crime prevention work, attending and investigating reports of crime and dealing with neighbour disputes to name but a few.

“The fact remains however that the team only consists of three officers and so we simply cannot be everywhere at once. As such, we have asked for some additional patrols to assist us and have been able to get tome extra special constables to help patrol the village when we are not available. I can assure people that these officers are not there to protect the youths, as has been suggested by some people.”

Midland Window Installations

Reward for a top five finish means the club qualifies for entry to the FA Cup for the first time in its history and everyone at the club is looking forward to the experience.

“It was always manager Kris Nurse’s target in our first season” said Gary.

“Now we are looking forward to entertaining South Normanton at home in front of a bumper crowd on August 5.”

The match kicks off at 3pm.

He added: “We have developed the ground and the team over the years and now feel that we are in a really strong position to start the season with a massive fixture that will hopefully lead to a rewarding run. The real aim next season will be promotion to the next level but obviously a good cup run will be a nice distraction.”

As well as the FA cup, the team are also looking forward to a home tie in the FA Vase, again against south Normanton on September 9, and Gary is

hoping that the local community will come out in force to cheer the lads on in both games.

“Last season we attracted over 100 supporters to our FA Vase fixture and we are hoping to exceed that this time.

It will give us the opportunity to showcase our ground to people that haven’t been down for a while” he said.

A grant from the Football Foundation will enable the club to develop the third side to their ground, which will include hard standing for spectators, perimeter fencing and extra car parking space.

Gary said: “We believe that this funding will enable us to transform the ground and help to take us on to the next level. We can’t wait to get started and let’s hope we get a good crowd down to enjoy the day.”

How our GP surgeries fared in patient survey GREENGATE MEDICAL Centre is ranked in the top 17 per cent of GP surgeries in England according to a survey of patients by NHS England.

The GP Patient survey is carried out every year by Ipsos MORI on behalf of NHS England and involves surveys being

sent out to over a million people across the UK. The survey asks about patients’ experi-

ence of their local GP surgery and includes questions about how easy it is to make an appointment, quality of care received and confidence and trust in GPs. Birstall Medical Centre on Whiles Lane is ranked in the bottom 4 per cent of GP surgeries in England.

Jo Merchant, Practice Manager at Greengate Medical Centre said: “We are very pleased to see that we are in the top 17% in England. We are always trying to improve our services, and this result reflects the ongoing hard work carried out by all of our team at the practice.”

Birstall Medical Centre was invited to comment for this article but a response was not received.

The national picture shows a small decrease in patient satisfaction with GP services compared to 2016.

In 2015 Birstall Medical Centre was placed in Special Measures following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission. A programme of improvements was implemented and a subsequent CQC inspection in August 2016 rated the surgery as Good in all categories.

Greengate Medical Centre was last inspected by the CQC in March 2016. It was rated as Good in all categories.

Introduction of 30 hours FREE funding The Hunny Hive Day Nursery have been open since November 2016 and are pleased to announce that their team is expanding and the family of Hunny children and parents is growing rapidly. The children have settled superbly and are making rapid progress within their learning and development due to the rich, varied and imaginative experiences planned by the staff.

Cedars’ awards recognise achievement BIRSTALL’S CEDARS Academy has recognised the success of its students at two awards evenings.

On June 30 more than 200 staff, students and guests gathered in the Palmer Tomkinson Centre to see ex pupil and professional footballer George Taft present awards for sporting achievement.

Awards were presented in various categories including endeavour, sportsmanship, leadership and outstanding performance. Students from all year groups were nominated and presented with certificates with winners receiving a trophy.

A RECENT statement by the National Audit office reported that HMRC raised £574.9 billion of tax revenues this year (2016/17), an increase of £38.1 billion (7.1%) on 2015-16.

I think that most people realise that roads are dangerous places, and I have long held the view that mind-reading should not be a factor when trying to drive safely. There seems to be a number of drivers who think that signalling as they do something which may cross another driver’s progress is sufficient to give the other driver time to adjust. Worse still, some drivers do not even bother to signal. These people often do not look.

I am well aware that some drivers will use the bus lane on the Loughborough Road to avoid queuing at traffic lights, but I witnessed one driver recently who took this to extremes. He arrived at the Sibson Road lights – travelling south – at some speed. There was a queue. He cut inside the queue, swung back out into the right turn lane and turned up Greengate, completely ignoring the red light. Fortunately there was nothing coming. He did not even bother to signal.

Cemetery I WAS sorry to hear that the sexton of Birstall cemetery had resigned his post.

For eleven years plus, as I have visited a family grave in the old part of the cemetery, I have found him polite and

helpful and he has kept the grounds in immaculate condition and carried out his duties with efficiency and respect.

Since he has moved to another job away from the Parish Council the cemetery has been untidy and poorly maintained. It is to be hoped that the parish council do not shirk their responsibility for this expensive amenity, as bereaved relatives have a right to a better standard of care than they have received since the resignation of the sexton.

St. James Monday Group An Evening with Sandra Moore a performance storyteller, who uses costume, lighting and music to create the atmosphere for her storytelling. This popular community event, organised by Birstall Parish Council, will be a one day event instead of the usual two, and has been moved from June to August in the hope of enjoying better weather.

The parish council says there will be lots of new free attractions at the gala this year, as well as fairground rides and the traditional Proms in the Park concert.

There will be charity, private and trade stalls on the School Lane playing field and bands will be performing from 12noon until 7pm – they include Ska-a-Manga, Beneath the Lights, Hollie and the

Dedications, Peter Crebbin and his Cool Swing Band and The Annie Duggan Band.

The Proms in the Park concert, performed by the Hathern Band and soprano Philipa Hyde, starts at 7.30pm and concludes at 10pm with a firework finale, weather permitting.

The admission charge to the Gala is £1 (under 18s free). Barbeques are not permitted, visitors are welcome to being their own picnics or use one of the hot food outlets on site.

Anne’s new post Couple together 65 years BIRSTALL’S CURATE will be taking up her first post as a vicar in Luton soon and says she is excited at the prospect.

Anne Crosby (pictured below) has been a curate with Birstall’s Anglican church working alongside Rev Vince Jupp, for three years.

She said: “I will miss Birstall, the people, the love and the warmth that is shared. I will miss the sense of community, and the relationships between people whose families have, in many instances, lived in Birstall and Wanlip for a very long time.”

Anne (59) will be the new vicar at the church St Anne with St Christopher in Luton. She said: “I am looking forward to getting to know and love this new group of people, of being a part of their journey.”

Of her time in Birstall Anne says: “It has been a privilege to be alongside people at important stages of their lives including baptisms, weddings and funeral. As a part of churches together in Birstall and Wanlip I was involved in developing, making and using the giant puppets to tell first the Christmas story and later the Easter story.

I observed lots of creativity in the parish. This led to the formation of a group called God, me and art.”

Anne, who is married with four children, will give her farewell service on Sunday August 20.

A BIRSTALL couple are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary this month.

Ron and Hazel Andrews of Whiles Lane, met at work, Castles Motors on Churchgate, when they were both 21 years old – Ron was a salesman and Hazel was a secretary.

“She used to come floating across the workshop floor and I thought she was a cracker, way above my league” said Ron (89).

“I remember our first proper date” says Hazel (89). “Ron took me for a drink at the Grand Hotel, then to the cinema and then to the palais for dancing. He had to walk home to Birstall as he couldn’t afford the fare home”.

She added: “I thought he was a very nice man, he was nice to me, to the customers, to everybody – all the lady customers used to love him, and my parents thought the world of him.”

The couple married on August 30, 1952 at Earl Shilton church and their first home was on Hoby Street in Leicester. They’ve lived in Birstall since 1981.

Both keen bowls players, Ron has also been Captain and President at Birstall Golf Club. The couple have two adopted daughters, one of whom sadly died aged 52 from cancer.

Ron and Hazel celebrated their anniversary with a 19 day cruise to Venice. “It was wonderful” said Hazel.

The couple say working together and keeping a sense of humour have been the secret of their long marriage.

New school ready to open BUILDING WORK at the Hallam Fields primary school has finished.

The keys to the school were handed over to Executive Headteacher Scott Fewster on July 18.

The school will be hosting an opening event on August 29 from 4-6pm. Chair of governors Sharon March said: “There will be the opportunity to have a tour of the building and see the wonderful learning environment the children have access to. Refreshments will be provided.

We have a special visitor booked to come along … but his identity is a secret! We hope to have live music. There won’t be a lot of speeches!

“We hope that children who come along will be able to experience many of the activities that usually happen during the school day.

“We are very happy that many of our community friends will also be present, as well as representatives of the Lionheart Trust, Riverside and Highcliffe Primary Schools and the Cedars Academy.”

The £4million school is part of the

Lionheart Academies Trust, responsible for all Birstall’s schools. When it opens it will admit one class of 27 pupils but will eventually cater for 210.

Next to the school is a sports pitch for community use which will be served by changing facilities within the school. The pitch has just been seeded and wont be ready for use for 18 months.

Management of the facility has yet to be determined.

Scams Scams cost people in the UK £10.9 billion each year. We would like to help bring that figure down. This article will explain just a few of these scams.

Telephone scams This consists of a fraudster posing as someone else and tells you to withdraw or transfer your money. The safe account is the fraudster’s bank and money withdrawn will be collected by a courier of the fraudster.

Remote access scams A fraudster will cold call from a ‘computer company’ and then ask for you to log in to online banking and will claim to be helping but actually would have transferred some malicious software to gain access to your account.

Buying / selling scams You will find an item for a cheap price and then transfer money. After that the seller would disappear leaving you without money and your item. When you’re selling an item beware. Fraudsters would offer lots and then ask for the extra money to go to a third party. The cheque would bounce leaving you without money and your item.

Smishing scams Someone will claim to be from your bank and say you need to update your details. It would contain a link to a fake website where you type your details in and they would then steal your identity.

Tips and tricks

Crime update Reported crime in June has unfortunately remained higher than average with a total of 70 crimes being reported during the month. We have continued to have problems with cars being broken into, with a total of 18 thefts from vehicles being reported and we have also suffered with vehicles being damaged, of which we have had a total of 17 reported. The majority of the damage incidents occurred on the weekend of the 17th & 18th and then again on the weekend of the 24th & 25th in the areas around Sibson Road, Gwendolin Avenue, Acacia Avenue and Wanlip Lane. We believe that a group of youths, some local and some from outside Birstall were responsible for these mindless acts and we are currently following up a number of lines of enquiry, including speaking with any witnesses & checking CCTV to see what evidence we have against them. We know that people are understandably angry about these crimes and so if you have any information in relation to these incidents, please contact us on 101.

As stated above, thefts from vehicles also remains high and earlier in the month we did have a male arrested in relation to a spate on the Hallam Fields Estate. Unfortunately, due to the fact no-one was able to positively identify him as being the male responsible we had no option but to release him without charge. The message remains however to continue to lock your car when it is unattended and to remove anything of

Thankfully this kind of crime is rare but it is extremely distressing & often leaves people feeling foolish & vulnerable.

These criminals will often say they are from the ‘Water Board’ or ‘Electricity Company’ & may show ID, which is false.

If you have such a caller, always put the chain on and then make sure that any back doors and windows are secure before you go back & speak to them.

Never let them in and if you are at all concerned that they may not be genuine, shut the door and call 101 immediately to report the incident.

Neighbourhood update As I am writing this report the new barrier on Sibson Road car park is being installed. We are very grateful to the Parish Council for agreeing to install this & are hopeful that it will reduce the Anti-Social behaviour that we have been having in relation to noisy vehicles on the car park at night. We are aware that we are also having issues with vehicles racing round the Hallam Fields Industrial Estate in the evenings & we are now working to try and resolve this issue, including both high-visibility & plain clothed patrols in the area & issuing warnings to any drivers we find engaging in Anti-Social Behaviour. We are also speaking with Jelson’s who own the land, to see what assistance they can offer to help solve this problem.

New boat needed A LOCAL charity that provides river trips for the disabled is appealing for donations to help pay for a new boat.

For more than 30 years the adapted, accessible narrowboat ‘Sunbeam’ has been giving pleasure to disabled and infirm people by taking them on day trips along the River Soar. The boat is based at the ‘Hope and Anchor’ pub in Wanlip and takes passengers north to Mountsorrel and Barrow on Soar, and south to Belgrave and Abbey Park.

‘Sunbeam’ day trips have been one of the services provided by the charity ‘mosaic: shaping disability services’ and during this time in excess of 50,000 passengers including those in wheelchairs, have enjoyed the service manned entirely by volunteer skippers and crew. It has been able on each trip to take up to twelve passengers including carers, and up to four wheelchairs.

A Mosaic spokesman said: “The impact on the passengers, many of whom can feel socially isolated is reflected in their positive comments, ‘it is so relaxing’, ‘I love getting out and sometimes meeting new people’, ‘it’s great to see all the wildlife’, ‘after a while my anxiety goes and if I have one day free from anxiety, that’s amazing!’

“Unfortunately, however, Sunbeam has grown old and is becoming unfit for purpose. Because of this it has been decided to commission a new, purpose built boat allowing more space and improved up-to-date facilities to better meet the needs of its’ passengers.

“This is a massive undertaking but one mosaic: shaping disability services is determined to pursue because of the tremendous benefits as identified by the passengers.”

Organic food champion dies A FORMER Birstall schoolboy who became an influential organic farmer in San Francisco has died at the age of 56.

Nigel Walker founded Eatwell Farm in Dixon, Solano County in 1993, having first moved to California in 1992.

He quickly became a leading figure in the organic food movement, specialising in growing heirloom tomatoes and speciality lavender on his 105 acre farm which he ran with his wife Lorraine.

Nigel grew up in Birstall and was a pupil at Stonehill and Longslade schools.

His parents Don (81) and Thora (79) still live in the village.

Don said: “Almost from the time he could walk he would love digging holes in the garden and even under the fence to next door. Little did we realise his

Nigel studied farming at Writtle Agricultural College in Essex and worked briefly for the BBC as a radio studio engineer for the World Service, before returning to farming.

His Eatwell Farm in California delivered organic fruit and veg boxes to 900 members and he sold his

own produce at the Ferry Plaza farmers’ market in San Francisco.

Nigel was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 and died on July 1. His parents travelled to the USA to be with him in his final weeks, where they attended his celebratory memorial service. His father Don said: “It was attended by 100 of his closest friends and it made us very proud of Nigel to realise what an impact he has made over there.”

30 MEMBERS of Birstall and Wanlip WI welcomed three new ladies to their July meeting.

As usual we sang Jerusalem helped by the wonderful acoustics in our new venue of Elmfield Hall. Soon we were hearing singing of a different variety when we were visited by Tina and Terry of Kinder falconry. We were serenaded by the sounds of barn, tawny and scops owls, a kestrel, 22 year old Dudley a Mexican harris hawk and a pygmy falcon.

Finally we met two baby owls on their first trip out, a nine week old great grey owl and a brown Asian wood owl. They were all bred in captivity and hand

reared by Tina. It was yet another memorable evening with Joy Bark winning the competition ‘A bird in any medium’.

The monthly Crafting and Chatting sessions at Cedar Mews Care Home are thriving as they encourage outside communities to join in life at the home. We have no meeting in August but instead have organised a coach trip to Newark and on July 20 we are hosting a walk and picnic to Abbey Park. This is open to all Leicestershire WI members.

This was our last meeting until September 4 when Christine Farmer will talk to us about the History of Masks and the competition is ‘Make or design a mask’.

Boundary Woodlands’ new owner changes THE BROADNOOK Garden Suburb, a new development of 1650 new homes north of Birstall, looks set to be given its own parish council.

Charnwood Borough Council have made the recommendation in the latest phase of its Community Governance Review (CGR), which are carried out every 10 to 15 years to ensure local government boundaries remain reflective of local communities.

The Broadnook site is within the parish of Wanlip at the moment – Wanlip’s parish meeting have said it wants the boundary changing to remove Broadnook from Wanlip.

Charnwood’s CGR states: “The [Broadnook] development will eventually be of a size to potentially warrant its own parish council, but is unlikely that there will be enough residents living there by May 2019 to make a parish council viable.

The creation of a parish meeting will allow the development to establish its own community identity, and a further community governance review can be undertaken in the future if it is felt that the parish meeting should become a parish council.”

The CGR is also recommending that the parish of Birstall be enlarged by transferring a narrow strip of land that is currently within the parish of Thurcaston and Cropston. The land is next to the GCR track, south of the A46. Charnwood says the boundary change is necessary because the A46 is the “obvious geographical boundary between the two parishes.”

THE WOODLANDS Nursery on Park Road is under new ownership, having been bought

by Children 1st Day Nurseries which is based in Long Eaton.

The firm has also purchased nurseries in Syston and Hathern. With two other nurseries in Leicestershire, one in Leicester city centre and the other in Shepshed, the purchase means that Children 1st will now offer 488 places for children in the county. It will also offer ‘30 Hours Free Childcare’ for 3 and 4 year olds as part of the government initiative from September.

Commenting on the purchase, Margaret Mason OBE, founder and chief executive of Children 1st said: “We’ve had a presence in Leicestershire since 2005. The acquisition of the three additional premises presented a perfect opportunity to invest in the future of the nurseries and for us to further grow our business in the county”.

everyone to enhance this provision still further.”

The change of ownership will result in minimal disruption for children, parents and carers. All current members of staff will continue to be employed. This will bring the total number of people employed by Children 1st in Leicestershire to 110.

In addition, it is expected that the purchase will result in job creation in Leicestershire, especially for apprentices and young people looking to begin their career in childcare.

Margaret said: “We are keen to build on the high standards of childcare provided by the nurseries and improve where possible through training and development. Our staff are supported with an array of professional development opportunities both in nursery and at our training academy on Long Eaton. I encourage anyone looking to begin their career in childcare to get in touch.”

As well as this investment in staff, Children 1st also plans a significant programme of refurbishment in each nursery to enhance their learning environments, outside areas and facilities. Running club’s busy summer BIRSTALL RUNNING club turned out in force to support the 100 lap challenge at Saffron Lane.

This charity run in aid of Rainbows involves lots of running clubs racing against each other 100 times around the Saffron Lane track.

Spokeswoman Angie Budge said: “This year was even more special in that the last lap was left to Louis Wood and his granddad Peter Barratt who is a Birstall runner.

“Louis was involved in a car crash in 2015 which left him with life changing injuries and was thought he would never walk again but against all the odds he has fought his way back and jogged the last 100th lap with his granddad, a truly remarkable moment for all who were there.”

Lastly over £400 was raised for LOROS at the Birstall music quiz organised by Colin Rimmer. Thanks to all who contributed to such a worthy cause.

At the end of August, our Leicester North Circuit of which Birstall is a part, will be merged with Trinity Circuit. The changes will affect some more than others. The quarterly Circuit Preaching Plan, at present fitting nicely on to both sides of an A4 sheet, will look quite different with twenty churches to encompass. As part of the changes our own Minister Rev Paula Hunt, becomes full time, taking on pastoral responsibility for Claremont Street. Dave Warnock, minister at Syston is to become Minister at Oadby whilst retaining Syston, Harrison Road & ‘Edgehill at All Saints’.

Our new Circuit will hold a special welcome service at Christchurch on Clarendon Park Road on Friday September 1 at 7pm. This service will include the launch of the new Circuit and the welcome for two new ministers, Rev Edson Dube (Superintendent) and Rev Jenny Impey. It will also be an opportunity to hear & meet our new District Chair Rev Helen Cameron.

Kids Craft at Syston The Hub Café at Syston Methodist Church (in High Street LE7 1GP), are holding craft sessions for children aged approx 4 to 8. Younger children will need adult help. The cost is £3.50 for the eldest child & £1.50 for siblings.

The Lodge Trust News Firstly, service users from The Lodge at Market Overton took part in June in the Learning Disability Week, where Mencap’s focus was to raise awareness of the benefits of employing people with a learning disability. A team spent time out in the community helping with local projects at a coffee shop, a drop-in centre and an allotment before ending at the Awareness Event at Melton Country Park. The residents enjoyed the experience and those they helped were very appreciative of their efforts. Secondly, representatives from the Lodge also attended a Compassion Supporters Day in Nottingham as Lodge staff and residents support a boy from the Philippines.
