Sun shines on church fayre A COUPLE of years of bad weather didn’t put off villagers and visitors attending this year’s summer fayre at St James church which this time thankfully enjoyed glorious sunshine. The annual August bank holiday event attracted a large crowd of visitors who enjoyed the combination of family fun and games, home made cakes and the bouncy castle. The money the event raised for the church and the Air Ambulance will be in the region of £2,300.

Traditional tree is back BIRSTALL’S CHRISTMAS tree this year will be a traditional 20 foot tree. “We have to get this one right” said Parish Council Chairman Ann Marshall when the tree was discussed at the council’s meeting on September 12. Last year’s blue Christmas cone (pictured) attracted widespread negative publicity in local and national media, both over its appearance and its cost. The council agreed a three year contract for the cone last year at a total cost Continued on page 2

The CPA, which helps the public to identify safe reliable contractors to carry out home improvements, awarded its 5 year Membership Achievement Award to CWC. Membership of the CPA means that customers have their deposits and guarantee underwritten by the organisation. Mandy Manning from CWC said: “We put the interests of the customer first and we won’t compromise on our attention to detail or the quality of the materials we use. “Everything is carefully project managed by us personally and we do everything we can to ensure the work we do enhances your home.”

Tree continued from page 1 of £21,185 but extricated itself from the contract after one year, at a cost of £6250. Comment was made at the September meeting that the council must err on the side of caution where costs are concerned. The clerk reported that the council’s public consultation had shown that a traditional tree was the favoured option. Because council staff are not trained to operate an elevated work platform that would be needed to install and decorate the tree, the council sought quotes for the supply, erection, decoration and removal of the tree. They considered four quotations for the job, but Birstall Garden Centre’s quote of £1500 did not include decoration or removal. The council voted unanimously to accept the quote from ‘Pines and Needles’ for a 20 ft Norway spruce with LED lights, festive baubles and a star on top at a cost of £2991. Comment was made that a bigger tree would have been preferable, but the same firm’s quote for a 25ft tree at £4842 was considered prohibitive. Since the meeting the council has been offered a 5 per cent discount on the tree, bringing the cost down to £2841. Chairman Ann Marshall said: “There was a lengthy and detailed debate at the meeting during which we considered the four quotes that had been obtained. Councillors are hopeful that their efforts prove satisfactory to residents and that they are reassured their comments were listened to.” The Parish Council are organising a Christmas event at the Sibson Road car park on December 2. It will include an artificial ice rink, fairground rides and free mince pies and mulled wine. The Christmas tree will be erected and lit several days before the event.

Site for ‘showpeople’ & £13m for schools 1650 NEW homes are planned for land to the north of Birstall and a planning application for the first phase of the development has been submitted to Charnwood Borough Council. The Broadnook Garden Suburb plans have always included four pitches for travelling show people but when the planning application was published online, this read as “traveller sites”. Charnwood have now amended the wording to “travelling showpeople sites”. Travelling showpeople are defined as a distinct group that does not include gypsies and travellers. They are: “Members of a group organised for the purposes of holding fairs, circuses or shows.” Many showpeople are members of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain and are required by the guild to follow a strict code of practice regulating their use of sites. Travelling showpeople sites often need to combine residential, storage and maintenance uses. Typically a site comprises areas set aside for the showpeople’s accommodation – usually caravans and mobile homes – and areas where vehicles and fairground equipment can be stored, repaired and tested. In their response to the application the Environment Agency had identified concerns regarding water pollution as the site was used as a tip from 1994 to 1996, which can generate both methane and carbon dioxide gases. It requires a risk assessment and detailed site investigation to be carried out. The Environment Agency also has concerns that the new development will be impacted on by odour generated by the Severn Trent Water Treatment Works at Wanlip. As the lead local flood authority, Leicestershire County Council are recommending the application be refused as the plans do not show an appropriate assessment of the management of surface water within the development. The developer is expected to come up with a solution to address the

council’s objection. Section 106 agreements are developer contributions that are negotiated between local authorities and developers. They aim to mitigate the impact of developments on the local area and are payments from the developer for things such as new schools, medical facilities, highway improvements and leisure facilities. The County Council say they require a contribution of £13,199,333 for education. This includes the cost of a new 420 place primary school (£6.6million), plus £5.9million for additional secondary school (11-18) places and £579K for special school places. The contribution for medical facilities (GP practices) is £903K

Plaque for Birstall’s John Hannah VC BIRSTALL’S VICTORIA Cross winner Sgt John Hannah has been commemorated with a County Council Green Plaque. Sgt Hannah was one of six winners chosen by a public vote in a scheme that aims to celebrate Leicestershire’s past. The Green Plaque Awards scheme was set up to recognise and celebrate people and places which have made an important and enduring contribution to our county. Sgt Hannah VC was nominated by Royal Air Forces Association, Leicester. A spokesman said: “On behalf of the charity that supports the RAF family, we are thrilled that Sgt Hannah’s bravery has been marked with a Green Plaque. Members of the RAF and their families continue to sacrifice so much to serve their country, so it is only right that this be highlighted wherever possible.” More than a hundred people gathered at Birstall Royal British Legion on Front Street on September 15 to see the Green Plaque unveiled by John’s daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His daughter Jennifer Newman said: “He was a very loving father and that never goes away. It’s wonderful that the plaque will be here for many generations to come, so we can remember – thank you for keeping his memory alive. I’m immensely proud that his memory can live on.” John Hannah was awarded the medal for his bravery during a night-time raid

flames and fumes and with his uniform on fire, he emptied both extinguishers before using his log book and his hands to beat out the flames. Throughout, thousands of rounds of ammunition were exploding around him in all directions as spare ammunition pans detonated in the heat. Ten minutes after the aircraft had first been hit, Connor heard Hannah’s voice through his earphones saying: “The fire is out sir”. The injured Hannah strug-

gled to the pilot’s seat. His face was burned black, his eyes badly swollen, eyebrows singed off and both hands were severely burned. His flying suit was charred and tattered. Hannah retrieved the navigator’s maps and helped the pilot navigate the bomber home, landing successfully at Scampton at 3am on September 16. For his bravery, John Hannah was Continued on page 5

in a bomber over Antwerp in 1940. Aged only 18, Hannah had joined the RAF in 1939 and on the night of September 15/16, 1940 he was the wireless operator in a four man crew aboard a Hampden bomber. Their target was a concentration of German barges gathered in the port of Antwerp for a threatened invasion of Britain. Shortly after dropping their bombs and flying through intensive flak, the aircraft was hit by a shell that pierced the wing petrol tanks and the rear fuselage exploded into flames. The slipstream effect fuelled the ferocity of the flames which quickly begun to melt the fuselage. Hannah’s first action was to inform the pilot, Connor, that the aircraft was on fire. The navigator, Hayhurst, crawled out of the aircraft’s nose to find Hannah and gunner, George James. There was no sign of James, he had baled out when the floor beneath him melted, but he saw Hannah who appeared to be literally alight from head to toe. Hayhurst concluded that Hannah and James had ‘bought it’ and baled out of the aircraft quickly in order to give the pilot Connor time to get out too. Despite having the opportunity to bale out, Hannah struggled to open a door to reach the fire extinguishers and used these to quell the fire. Surrounded by

In 1942 his health deteriorated, he contracted tuberculosis and was discharged from the RAF in December 1942 with a full disability pension. Born in Scotland in 1921, John Hannah lived in Birstall after his discharge from the RAF with his wife Janet. They had three daughters. John Hannah died in 1947. WANLIP HAS been moved into a new county council electoral division following a review by the Boundary Commission. Currently, the Birstall division includes Wanlip and the County Councillor is Conservative Iain Bentley. At next May’s county council elections Wanlip will be in the Syston Ridgeway division – the Current County Councillor is Conservative Stephen Hampson. The Syston Ridgeway division will also include the planned Broadnook Garden suburb of 1650 new homes north of Birstall. The parish boundaries remain unchanged and there have been no changes announced affecting Wanlip Parish

meeting or Birstall Parish Council. The Broadnook Garden suburb falls within the parish of Wanlip but some sources are suggesting it may be given its own parish council. • the review of the county council boundaries was necessary to improve electoral equality, say the Local Government boundary commission • Leicestershire will be represented by 55 county councillors in the future, the same as the current arrangement • view a map of the changes at tinyurl.com/gvjugtu

LOCAL CHARITY, Birstall BAGS, is inviting everyone to join them for an evening of outrageous cabaret at Birstall Social Club on Friday November 4 at 7.30pm. Entertainment is guaranteed with the return of the fabulous comedy female impersonator, Ceri Dupree (pictured). Tickets are £12.50 each and are expected to sell out fast so email info@birstallbags.co.uk to book your tickets. Emma Shaw, a trustee of the charity said: “We can’t wait for this event! It was so much fun last year and everyone had a great time which is why we’ve booked Ceri Dupree again – she’s outrageous but everyone loved it! “I’d encourage groups of friends to come along for a fantastically entertaining evening while, at the same time, helping us support people affected by cancer.” Birstall BAGS, a charity working in and around Birstall and Leicestershire, seeks to bring people together to raise funds to support cancer services used by the local

community. The charity also takes every opportunity to raise the profile of cancer, particularly with regard to the signs and symptoms, recognising that early diagnosis of cancer really can save lives. Birstall BAGS works with other local charities to provide services that support members of the local community who are living with a diagnosis of cancer.

News from MP Recently I had the privilege of visiting Birstall Fire Station and Leicestershire Fire and rescue Service HQ to talk about the Service's work in Charnwood, issues affecting it, and to be given a truly impressive demonstration by the Birstall crew of firefighting and of the crew's medical first-response work. My visit, however, came on a very sad day for our Fire and Rescue Service following the sudden death on duty earlier that week of firefighter Paul Wilkens based at Castle Donnington in NW Leicestershire. Last week, along with other County MPs and the Leader of the County Council, I attended Mr Wilken's Fire Service funeral in Loughborough. On

both occasions, despite their obvious sadness at the loss of a friend and a member of the Fire Service 'Family', as always the firefighters did their Service and our County proud. The very moving service, and my visit and the demonstration, were very powerful reminders of how proud we should be of our Fire and Rescue Service, and what a first rate job our County's firefighters do day-in, dayout, putting themselves in harms way and frequently in danger, to keep us safe and to be there when we need them. They are people who, when we would run away from danger, they run towards it to racked it. As a community we are incredibly grateful to them all for all they do for us, and I know Birstall feels a particular closeness to the crew based locally. I wanted to use this opportunity to thank our County's firefighters and to extend my condolences and those of Birstall and our whole community to Mr Wilken's family, friends, and colleagues. A final, brief, word on a different subject I also had the pleasure of attending the Mayor of Charnwood's Civic Service recently, held at St James' Church in Birstall. The service was one of thanksgiving and recognition of the Mayor, our own Cllr David Gaskell's, service to the Borough and his own community in Birstall, and of civic service more broadly. It was an uplifting occasion, and particular congratulations go to the pupils of Riverside Community Primary for their fantastic singing at the service. Edward Argar MP

Heart Unit I am part of the Save the Glenfield Children’s Heart Unit campaign. If the unit were to close, there would be no children's heart surgery unit in the entire East Midlands. This is obviously going to have

We provide a vibrant and engaging curriculum which promotes the love of learning, and prepares young people for the next steps in their lives. a very serious impact on children in the East Midlands We are asking people to sign the online petition asking for a Public Review into that decision. The petition can be found at: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/160 455 We are also running a paper petition for those people who have no access to the internet and want to show their support. We desperately need more signatures and I would be very happy to provide blank petition forms to anyone who is willing to collect signatures for us. It would be wonderful if there were a number of people who could collect in their local areas. This is a world class service and we cannot afford to lose it. If it goes because the public does not fight for it, there will be no children's Heart unit in the entire East Midlands. Shirley Barnes

Thanks I wish to express my thanks through the Birstall Post to all the people who helped me when I fell over in the car park, breaking my hip. There was a group of young people who between them called for the ambulance, alerted the class I was attending and supported me so I didn’t have to lean against the steps. In addition to the young people, others also offered help and moral support, notably a lady with a pram and a first aider. My exercise tutor also came along to assist. I am very grateful to all concerned. Since then I have had a stay in hospital and a period at home recuperating. I’m still hobbling but well on the mend. Thank you all so much. Happy Hallam Fields During the recent sunny weather, I spent time walking and enjoying the green open spaces within Hallam Fields. I was pleased to see that a road has been dedicated to the late Councillor Stuart Jones. When we moved to Birstall nearly ten years ago, Councillor Jones knocked on my door during an election campaign. His opening words were "welcome to Birstall". I have never forgotten the sincerity in those words. This followed by a further visit to Hallam Fields when he asked if there was anything which could be improved. As a result the wire netting was put up around the balancing pond. This made the area safe for young children.

We are currently looking to recruit a: Pupil Premium Mentor (Reference CAPP1) Based at The Cedars Academy in Birstall, part of the Lionheart Academies Trust 37 hours per week, 38 weeks per year (0.83 FTE) Grade 7 £18,316 - £19,940 pro rata (£15,202.28 - £16,550.20 actual salary) We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic graduate who wants to make a difference to disadvantaged young people. The 'right' person will support, mentor, challenge and track pupil premium students to achieve high standards of attainment across a wide range of subjects. The post holder is likely to spend a large proportion of their time supporting pupils to boost their literacy and/or numeracy skills. You will be required to support Pupil Premium students to learn in their lessons and remove any barriers to learning. You may also be required to plan, prepare and deliver learning activities for individual students and small groups under an agreed system of supervision. This is a new post and we want a creative thinker, who will have their own ideas about how we can best support pupils to achieve at The Cedars Academy. This would be an ideal opportunity for a graduate who is interested in beginning a career in teaching/education. This post is designated as a regulated activity and requires enhanced criminal records check for a regulated activity (including a barred list check). If you would like to come and visit the Academy or have any queries please do not hesitate to contact our Human Resources department on 0116 267 0803. Closing date: Thursday 13th October 2016 at noon Interviews: week beginning 24th October 2016 Please complete and return the application and monitoring forms on our website www.thecedarsacademy.org.uk and return to sara.hill@thecedarsacademy.org.uk. The plans for the new primary school have been passed, and the site on Long Meadow Way is being prepared for the building work to take place. The network of footpaths around the development will allow adults and children an easy access to school with minimum danger with road traffic. The neighbourhood nursery is nearly ready and hopefully will provide good preschool education for the little ones who will be attending. In fact our neighbours have already told us they are interested in sending their children there. Next to the Nursery is a new play park which has recently been opened up and appears well used by excited children. It offers more than traditional swings and slides which is appealing for today's youngest generation. For adults there are benches where they can sit and supervise their little ones both inside and outside the amenity.

Equally the purpose built care home called Cedar Mews, looks attractive now the scaffolding has been removed. The building's exterior is a mixture of exposed wood, white render and brick. This looks attractive and is enhanced by the lovely garden areas being planted up to the front of the building. The shops are still under construction, which I hope will be an asset to this community. I moved to Birstall from Leicester City for a better quality of life. From time to time there was uncertainty expressed about the school, the development of the shops and care home. This has been provided by the developer and their associates, for which I would like to take the opportunity to say "Thank you" this is a pleasant place in which to live. If Stuart Jones was alive today I am sure he too would be proud to see what has been achieved over the past decade. Last year we took the opportunity to move to another house within the development and we are aware of several other families who have done the same. Another Happy Hallam Fields resident

Join in What have a gaming character and a traditional bear named James got in common? Well, you might find both in or near your local Parish Church, of St James, on Church Hill. If you have a smart phone you can find both, by logging on to the respective sites. Look out for the Large Bear (s), (on the Gates) painted by local children at the Fete and the Sunday School. James helps children with their reading and learning, their chat with God (we call Prayers) and like us shares food and drink in many ways. The Pokémon is only visible, near the main door, and gets you points. For many people of all ages, out for a walk, or a bike ride, looking for these characters, has become a way of exploring their locality. James Bear, likes new friends, so if you fancy a stop for a drink, a look round the Church, try our 'Find Out Quiz'; Play in our Family Area, or want to come and see what being in Church might be like, go to our Picture Gallery and our latest video , (Produced by Jenny Faulks, a local young person) on St James the Great Birstall and St Nicholas and Our Lady Wanlip | Sunday School/James Bear. We cater for all ages, (and special needs). A session for the under 3s, called Tiny Tots on Mondays, is at the Village Hall, from 1.30 to 3pm. Greengate Lane

THE BIRSTALL POST OCT 2016

In March this year those of us living in the 15 houses at the top section of Greengate Lane were sent, by the County Council, a letter and a plan indicating proposed roadworks to our road (obviously they should have been sent to every house in Birstall as many residents use Greengate Lane either as pedestrians, cyclists or drivers of vehicles.) We were given very little time to consider the proposed roadworks, to think about the implications, discuss with neighbours etc before sending our comments to the City Council. It was stated the comments would be passed to the Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, in April for him to consider. It is now six months since those comments were submitted and Sir Peter has had five months to read and to consider but there has been no response from him. Obviously we are not residents of Leicester and cannot be electors in elections for councillors and future mayors but we are entitled to consideration and respect by Sir Peter. At the moment he is treating Birstall residents with disdain, disrespect. I know one couple who asked for a response to their comments but they have been ignored. This is not appropriate behaviour by the city mayor especially one who has been honoured by having a knighthood bestowed on him for whatever reason. Meanwhile the traffic on Greengate Lane seems to increase all the time. Huge, lengthy lorries – obviously over the weight limit of seven and a half tons, travel up and down, some of them shaking our houses and presumably the bridge as sections of the brickwork at the side are being pointed-up on a regular basis. A lot of cars and motor cycles

obviously travel at more than 30 mph (the signs indicating a safety zone of 20 mph about 100 yds each side of Highcliffe School are a joke). Many cyclists use the pavement instead of the road – I can’t say I blame them although it is illegal to do so. Incidentally most of the schoolchildren cycling to and from school do not use safety helmets – what on earth are their parent thinking in letting them do so and what lessons in road safety are being provided by the Cedars Academy? Unfortunately the police seem to be ‘turning a blind eye’ to all the traffic infringements taking place. For myself, having impaired mobility, Greengate Lane has become very dangerous to cross as I need to walk across in about 3-4 seconds to avoid any oncoming traffic but it takes me much longer. Several months ago when walking across and nearly reaching the side of the road I was dealt a glancing blow in the back by a passing motor cyclist (I think by the end of the handlebar). Fortunately I was not injured, only suffering severe bruising. In spite of the camera on a nearby lamppost the police were unable to identify the offending motor cyclist. Obviously he knew he had hit me as I saw him look over his shoulder presumably to see if I was still standing. Because of the danger I have had to stop delivering Neighbourhood Watch newsletters to the two bungalows next to the school. I know the police have other problems to deal with but surely they can give some time to dealing with the traffic infringements taking place on Greengate Lane. Surely also Sir Peter Soulsby can, at last, reply to our comments and let us know his decision about the proposed roadworks. J Woods

There is a new skittle competition starting again and we play Groby WI at Cossington in the first round on September 22. Two of our members will be judging at the Great Birstall Bake Off on Saturday September 24 at the White Horse and it was time yet again to discuss our Christmas dinner! Our speaker was Paul Taberner who talked to us about his career in scene of crime investigations. He has consulted on many TV shows including ‘Silent Witness’ and told many anecdotes about celebrities he has worked with. He also spoke about his past cases and the importance of DNA in solving new and old crimes. He then answered questions at the end of the talk and blew away any myths that TV shows actually portray the ‘Real CSI’ and their everyday work. Andrea won the competition ‘An Unusual Murder Weapon’ with her Frozen leg of lamb (only a picture as she is a vegetarian). Our next meeting is on October 3 when Pat Hall will tell us that ‘Life Can Be Funny’ and the competition will be ‘Your favourite Bad Joke’. From Birstall & Wanlip WI

first XI finished their season with a victo- 11 ry over Barrow by one wicket. As it was the last match instead of the captain choosing the batting order numbers were drawn out of a hat which actually resulted in regular openers Max Lewin and Andy Lord batting at 10 and 11 and they added nearly 50 for the last wicket! Josh Saye had taken 6 – 19 when bowling. Overall the team won 8 and lost 8 and will be slightly disappointed with a finish of just below halfway. The second XI just lost their final match by seven runs with Shaun Milne scoring his first ever 50 and just failing to see the team home. They finished a credible seventh in the league in which they do play the first 11 of six clubs, so a good effort after a poor start. The clubs annual presentation night will be held on Saturday October 8 at Birstall United FC at which a cheque will be presented to the Birstall Bags. From Ian Hunt, Birstall Village Cricket Club

Five peaks trek A GRUELLING charity challenge will see Gillian Bowler tackling five peaks in one day in the Lake District. Gillian (52 & pictured below) lived in Birstall for most of her life and was a student at Stonehill and Longslade schools. Now living in Syston, she said: “I am looking forward to the challenge, the views and the achievement at the end. “The most challenging part will be the ascents as I have not done any trekking since 2011. In the past I have done Annapurna Range of Mountains in Nepal, Kenya, weekend trek in Iceland, cycling through Poland, Thailand and the Sahara for various charities.” Gillian’s Lake district trek will cover 14 miles over five peaks, the highest being Scafell Pike. Her trek, on October 15, will raise funds for the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme. Gillian said: “After watching my niece and nephew take part in the awards, I felt I wanted to give back to the charity while challenging myself again. I have set a target of £100 but if I can smash this it would be fantastic.” If you would like to support Gillian you can either go to her JustGiving website www.justgiving.com/fundraising/DofED iamondGill or donate by text – GATB52 £? to 70070.

Parish Council notes A FULL meeting of Birstall Parish Council was held on September 12. PCSO Mark Butler reported there had been a slight rise in crime from July to August, and the biggest rise was in vehicle crime. He said there was only one burglary in August which is very low for the time of year. It was reported that the cost of the base for new bus shelter on Wanlip Lane was £1500, and that the County Council had agreed to pay half. The parish council is paying the other half. A wooden bus shelter donated by Cllr Iain Bentley is expected to be erected in the next six weeks. A proposal from the Parish Council to share the cost of fencing the Meadow Lane ditch has not yet had a response from the County Council. The Borough Council have asked for a map of the location. The council considered quotations for the 2017 Christmas tree. After a lengthy discussion it was agreed unanimously to spend £2291 on a 20 ft Norway spruce. It was reported that a petition had started to have the bus service 22A and 22B re-routed along Abbey Lane. Cllr Tony Abbey reported that Charnwood Borough Council had amended its online description of the Broadnook Garden Suburb as having ‘traveller sites’ to ‘sites for travelling showpeople’. The access to an area of parkland near Wanlip village will be from the A46 slip road.

Birstall bowls BOWLERS FROM Birstall Ladies Bowling Club won two county titles, and were runners up in another, following matches played during the last month.

& crime report

WE HAVE seen a very slight rise in recorded crime this month, up from 33 offences in July to 37 in August.

Ghosts and fireworks are coming to Birstall

A large number of these however were ‘drive-offs’ from the Shell Petrol Station (seven offences) although we have also seen a rise in the number of thefts from motor vehicles, with 10 being reported in total. Several of these happened in one night in the Harrowgate Drive area and whilst enquiries are still at an early stage, we do possibly have a witness to one of the incidents who managed to get a registration number for a vehicle used by the suspects. As such, we will be following this up and will hopefully be able to identify the people involved in this incident. I am pleased to report that we have only had one burglary this month, which considering it has been the summer holidays (a time when we often see a rise in break-ins due to houses being unoccupied etc) is really positive. Please continue to secure your doors & windows & set any alarms you may have at all times when your property is unoccupied, so that this downward trend can hopefully continue. It is also pleasing to note that we have also had very few Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) reports over the summer holidays (again a time when we traditionally see a rise in such incidents). We will continue to conduct highvisibility patrols around the village to deter such behaviour and would continue to ask that you report any such incidents so that we are aware as to when and where they are happening and can focus our patrols effectively. The beat team will be conducting several beat surgeries this month at various locations around the village. Please see the Leicestershire Police website for details of these and feel free to pop in and see us to discuss any issues you may have. Lastly, I’d like to share some really good work with you regarding our local Community Support Officer, PCSO Butler. Earlier this month he managed to arrange for an 8 year old lad from the village, who has Crohn’s disease, to travel on the footplate of one of the steam engines on the Great central Railway. This was something that the lad had wanted to do for some time and due to Mark’s hard work he was able to make it happen for him. I have been told that he didn’t stop smiling for the whole journey from Loughborough to Birstall & so I’m sure you’ll join me in saying a big thank you & well done to Mark for all his efforts in arranging this! Thanks for reading and as always please remain vigilant and report any crimes or suspicious activity to the Police on 101. You can also contact your local NHW co-ordinator for advice on non-crime matters. PC 1759 Dave Jaeckels, PCSO’s 6611 Mark Butler and 6552 Mo Musa. Harvest Festival With the unusually warm sunny days of late September fading into autumn , we celebrate Harvest Festival on Sunday October 2. There is an "All Together" service at 10am at St. James and Harvest Evensong at Wanlip at 6pm - the lovely old church of Our Lady and St. Nicholas at Wanlip looks particularly beautiful at this time. Everyone is welcome to either of these services and donations of fruit, vegetables and tinned food will be sent to a charity at the Carpenters' Arms in Loughborough which feeds the homeless and those without benefits.

Summer Fayre A big thank you is due to all the people who had stalls or came to St. James Summer Fayre this year and helped to make it such a success, We were lucky to have a fine day and the bouncy castle was loved by the children and the burgers by everyone! It is hoped that the total raised for the church and the Air Ambulance will be in the region of £2,300.

Film Show

THE BIRSTALL POST OCT 2016

As the evenings grow darker, our usual film evenings at St. James start again with a showing of "Eddie the Eagle" om Friday October 14 at 7pm. There is no charge for this entertainment and refreshments are served at the interval. We try to choose films suitable for all ages, and this real life story will ring a bell with many people who will remember Eddie Edwards ,who become famous- (or infamous) as a ski jumper of more enthusiasm than ability at the Winter Olympic Games of 1988. He was determined to make a name for himself, as a man of humble background , and he certainly did that!

Monday Group The St. James Monday Group welcomes any ladies who are looking for a sociable, friendly group, at their meetings on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm in the Day Care Centre in the Village Hall. There is usually a speaker followed by refreshments and a chance to chat and we also have a coach outing in the summer and a theatre visit in the winter. The other regular activity is to raise money for a different charity each year with a variety of events. For more infor-

mation you can contact Jane Scott on 2673761. The annual All Souls service at St. James, particularly intended for people who have been bereaved recently or in the past, will be held on Sunday October 30 at 3pm and all will be welcome to attend. From Birstall Parish churches

Planning For Christmas Festival At Methodist Church There are busy volunteers in most parts of Birstall preparing for the 2016 Christmas Festival on Friday & Saturday November 25 & 26. Hampers, preserves, decorations and gifts are being made to fill the Friday stalls. The Church will be filled with various creations under a theme of ‘Christmas Carols’. This theme can be expressed in a whole variety of ways (decorated trees, flower arrangements, displays, models and scarecrows – or in any other way) which can be admired by visitors on both Friday & Saturday. Businesses, individuals, groups etc are all invited to take part creatively.

Pantomime Cast Required Although the first meeting of the ‘Men’s Pantomime’ has already taken place (on 29th), the group would welcome any other men to join them in rehearsals for the 2017 production. Contact Richard for more details Tel: 0116 220 9462.

Down Memory Lane This is an opportunity for people with memory problems to come along with family or friends to enjoy drinks, homemade cakes and friendship. Meeting every couple of months, the next meeting is on Saturday October 8 at 2.30. The group is run by volunteers who help to provide a friendly atmosphere where attendees can relax and chat and enjoy and join-in some, mainly musical, entertainment. Short sessions where everyone sings ‘old’ songs are particularly popular.

Little Big Band & Highcliffe Harmony Both these groups have an enthusiastic following from Birstall. Their next joint concert is at Wigston Magna Methodist Church on Saturday October 15. Tickets are £6 from

Harvest Thanksgiving and Sunday Services The Harvest Service will be held on Sunday October 9 at our usual venue (the Community Room at Highcliffe Primary School, Greengate Lane, LE4 3DL) and start time of 10.45am. The visiting speaker is Joe Bailey (Leicester) and monetary offerings will be given to Care Sri Lanka. We offer you a warm invitation to join with us for this occasion – as we do for all our Sunday services. Please note that we are not in the school on October 23, as it is the half-term holiday. Please ring for arrangements for 23rd and for Sunday evenings. A children’s Sunday School is available during the morning meetings.

Creation Conference This major conference will be held on Friday October 7 (7 – 10pm) and Saturday October 8 (9.45am– 5pm) at Brockington College, Enderby, Leicestershire, LE19 4QA. Admission is free and no pre-registration is required. Refreshments will be available for purchase: on the Saturday this will include breakfasts from 9am and hot lunches as well as sandwiches. There will be nine speakers participating, including Professor Stuart Burgess (Bristol University), Dr. Sylvia Baker, Professor Steve Taylor (Liverpool University) and Dr. Gordon Wilson (Idaho, USA). In a mix of joint sessions and choices of seminars, topics will include: ‘Can the Bible be trusted as history?’, ‘War in the Bible: a moral problem?’, ‘Genesis kinds & natural selection’, ‘What the fossils really tell us’, ‘The timescale of geology’, ‘Creationism and education’, ‘What about the Flood?’, ‘Are humans just dust?’ and ‘Adam or ape-man’. Birstall BAG’s cancer corner with cancer. Exactly what will happen will depend on your symptoms and your local services. You will need to visit a hospital or clinic to see a specialist or have some tests. You may need to make several visits before you get a diagnosis. It is very important that you go to your appointment. If you can’t make it, call the hospital to rearrange as soon as possible. If you don’t get your appointment within a week, call your GP surgery. Tell them you are waiting for an urgent referral. You have a legal right to see a specialist within two weeks of your referral. If this isn’t possible, the NHS must try to offer you an alternative - you may need to ask the hospital to do this. What questions can I ask the specialist? It may help to write down a list of questions to ask your specialist and bring them to your appointment. These could include If my symptoms get worse, who should I contact? Should I take my medicines as normal? What tests do I need? What am I being tested for and what are you looking for? How reliable are the tests? How long will the tests take?

Charity donation MONEY RAISED by the Birstall Methodist Thursday Group has been donated to the charity Medical Detection Dogs. A cheque for £2835 was presented to Wendy Coley with her dog Oak. The dogs, trained at a facility at Milton Keynes, are able to sniff out the odour of cancer from urine samples, and potentially the development of a simple method of non-invasive cancer diagnosis. They are also trained as medical alert assistance dogs, to assist individuals who live with dangerous health conditions, by being able to detect minute changes in blood sugar levels and other hormone related odour changes, thus enabling them to warn their owners, get help and vital medication.

THE BIRSTALL POST OCT 2016

Urgent Two Week Wait Referral A trip to the GP surgery with a health concern can sometimes result in an urgent referral to hospital because cancer is amongst the possible causes for the sign or symptom you are experiencing. Clearly this is a very anxious time. Birstall BAG’s would like to shed a little light on the Two Week Wait referral process for suspected cancer and hopefully reassure you that this route is a quick and efficient way to actually rule cancer out for most people. What is an urgent referral? An urgent referral means that your GP has arranged for you to see a specialist within two weeks. This timeframe is set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). Your GP can book your appointment during your consultation, or you will get your appointment from the hospital. In some areas, you can book your appointment via the NHS E-referral service. Your GP will let you know if this option is available to you. Does this mean I have cancer? It is normal to worry when you are urgently referred to see a specialist by your GP. However, 9 in every 10 people (90%) referred this way will not be diagnosed

Do I have to do anything to prepare? What will the tests feel like? Do the tests have any after effects? How long will it take to get my test results? Who will give me the test results? Will I need another appointment? Who will I see? Who can I talk to if I have any questions? How will I get my results? You could get your results from your GP or your specialist. When you have your test, ask the hospital staff when you should expect to have the results and how. For example, by letter or face to face. Contact your GP surgery or your specialist’s secretary if you feel you have been waiting too long What happens next? Depending on your situation, you may get your results quickly, or it could take several weeks. For people who don’t have cancer, it’s still important that you continue to pay attention to your body. See your doctor again if you have any new, unusual or persistent changes, to make sure there is nothing else wrong REMEMBER: nine in every 10 people (90%) referred this way will not be diagnosed with cancer.
