Schools’ new head BIRSTALL’S PRIMARY schools will have a newly appointed Executive Headteacher from January 2016.

This new post has been created to provide a strategic role leading school improvement and development and line managing the Heads of school at Highcliffe and Riverside.

The headteacher at Highcliffe school, Pauline Aveling, left in March 2015 and the headteacher of Riverside, Andy Hayman, is retiring in July 2015. The Head of School in each school have yet to be appointed and may be internal or external appointments.

The Heads of School will focus on teaching and learning and be the main point of contact for parents.

Little Bird SOS. Lisa is an Arts for Health practitioner and the aim of the project was to help people with stress, anxiety and depression by doing arts and crafts in a relaxed and supportive environment.

Lisa said: “Seeing participants flourish, develop in confidence and grow over this year long project was very rewarding. Participants have improved their self esteem, gained confidence and become part of a community.”

She added: “They have said that they feel less isolated, made new friends and felt more empowered to interact with their community. A reduction in medication was also reported, and one participant said that she feels able to consider going back to work.

“On two occasions I have been told ‘you have saved my life’ and that says it all really.”

The Lionheart Academies Trust say the new post of Executive Headteacher will help both schools develop and provide a shared curriculum alongside the Cedars Academy, so that transition between the primary schools and the Cedars becomes seamless.

By working together in terms of staff development and sharing data and assessments, standards at both primary schools will continue to rise, say the Trust.

There are more than 800 pupils at the two primary schools and Leicestershire County Council has asked Riverside school to accept additional pupils. Additional capital funding has been made available to accommodate them. The County Council have yet to make any announcement about the provision of a new primary school in Birstall.

Mum wins award A BIRSTALL mum has won an award for her dedication, love and devotion looking after her adopted son.

Wendy Baker (53) was named as the Leicester Mercury Mum of the Year at a special ceremony in May. Wendy and her husband Len (56) adopted orphan baby Emmanuel from a mental institute in the Philippines.

Emmanuel, who is now 17, has severe learning disabilities and in 2005 moved to the UK were he has been raised as part of the Baker family.

Youth café boat trip SIX YOUNG people who attend Birstall Youth Café enjoyed an overnight stay on a working narrow boat in May. Accompanied by youth workers Mariea Hogan, Rebecca Hargrave and Lee Percival, their journey began at Thurmaston boatyard.

They moored overnight at Barrow upon Soar. A spokesman said: “The overnight stay on the boat was extremely exciting for the

young people, and after cooking their breakfast on the boat the next morning, the young people and the Youth Workers

spent the morning canoeing.

“They then began their five hour journey back to Thurmaston boatyard, with each of the young people taking a turn at the helm.

“At the end of the day six very tired young people were safely returned to their parents by three even more tired Youth workers.”

Birstall Youth Café is a facility provided by Birstall Parish Council in the pavilion on the School Lane playing field.

Four new benches installed in country park BENCHES PROVIDED by a Birstall charity and installed in Watermead Country Park aim to encourage people to get outside and take some exercise.

New Mayor MOUNTSORREL COUNCILLOR John Capleton has been appointed Mayor of Charnwood for the next year.

He will be supported by Meg Jenkinson as his Mayoress. Cllr Capleton’s chosen charities for the year are Twenty Twenty and the Sorrel Youth Care.

The new deputy Mayor is Birstall councillor David Gaskell.

Liz Darlison from Birstall BAGS said: “We have heard some comments that people like to walk in the park but that there are not enough benches for them to take a rest on.”

Birstall BAGS are trying to promote exercise, not only for those that are recovering from cancer and who get therapeutic benefit from being outside, but for the wider population as it helps prevent cancer.

Four benches have been provided. Dale Osborne, Senior Ranger at Watermead Country Park said: “We are very grateful to Birstall BAGS for these benches as our own funds have been cut back.”

BOWLS AND fancy dress were combined at St Margaret’s Co-operative bowls club to raise money for charity.

Roly Green said: “Down at the Co-op Sports ground in Birstall we are a pretty friendly bunch and the social side is just as imprtant as the bowls. In fact you could say that every day is a fun day with bowls but some times we make a special effort.

“On a warm sunny day at the end of May we all dressed in colourful clothes, had a short game of bowls, raised some money for charity – the Peter Le Marchant Trust – then sat down to a fantastic spread of tea, cakes and scones.”

Bank robber’s sentence upheld A ROMANIAN bank robber who used explosives to blow up a Birstall bank has lost an appeal to have his prison sentence of 13 and a half years reduced.

Around a dozen residents were present to hear an officer from the County Council Highways department give a presentation on a proposal for traffic calming measures on the southern section of Birstall Road, but he had sent notification that afternoon he would be unable to attend.

Chairman Ann Marshall reported that the scheme involved installing three speed cushions near the junctions with Kilby Road, Freehold Road and East Road.

Councillors and the public expressed disappointment that the officer was not present to answer questions. Points raised during the discussion were that the speed cushions were useless as they do not reduce speed, speed cushions the full width of the road are no longer installed as they slow down emergency vehicles and are not suitable for buses, the existing flashing speed signs are ineffective and a speed camera would be a deterrent, or a sign indicating the actual speed of a passing vehicle.

The County Council has indicated that budget pressures require it to request match funding from the Parish Council.

Comment was made that if the Parish Council contributes to this scheme, residents on other roads in the village will press for measures for their roads. The estimated cost of three speed cushions on Birstall Road is £34,000.

It was agreed to invite an officer from the County Council to a meeting on July 13 at 7pm at the Village Hall to discuss the proposals. The public are invited to attend.

County Councillor Iain Bentley reported that he had been consulted about a proposal to put in a bus lane on the A6 from the junction with Hermitage Road to Red Hill island. He thought this was a bad idea as it would involve using an existing lane, not putting in an additional lane.

Becky Thorpe was co-opted to fill a vacancy on the Council.

Chairman Ann Marshall reported that the Community Speed Watch volunteers were half way through a month long programme of vehicle speed checks in the village. Greengate Lane and Birstall Road had been identified as problem areas.

It was agreed to award grant aid of £200 to the Asian Sports Cricket Club.

It was reported that a decision on the funding available for the planned community hall at Hallam Fields was expected in the next two weeks.

Birstall bowling club SEVEN BOWLERS from Birstall Bowling Club have qualified for two events at next month’s National Championships, which take place in Leamington Spa. Pa Walker, Jan Everitt, Jennie Groves and Di Hurst beat a team from Kibworth in the county fours semi final to take their place as one of Leicestershire’s two representatives. It is the ninth successive year that a ladies four from Birstall has reached the National stages.

Pa Walker just missed out in qualifying in the two wood competition, reaching the semi final before losing out to Shepshed’s Kate Kyle.

Meanwhile, John Hurst, Paul Young and Andy Wye won six matches, including a semi final victory over a New Lount trio, to reach the county triples final and ensure qualification for the men’s National Championships, which are being held in Leamington Spa for the second year following the move from Worthing.

John Hurst also got to the quarter final stage in the county singles but lost out to Thringstone’s Eric Peat.

Finally, Leicestershire men’s President John Jenkins’ President’s Day takes place at Birstall on Sunday July 5 with a match between a Leicestershire team and Birstall starting at 2pm. The county game between Leicestershire and Oxfordshire which was played at Birstall ended in victory for the visitors by 119-113.

At Birmingham Crown court in December he admitted three burglaries, two counts of causing explosions and of trying to cause an explosion. At the Court of Appeal in London he appealed the length of his sentence, which he argues was “manifestly excessive”.

Three judges agreed the sentence was justified, that deterrent sentences were necessary and ruled there were no arguable grounds of appeal.

Alexandroaia has convictions in the UK for theft from a parking meter and while living in Italy served a prison sentence for inciting or causing child prostitution.

Top award for student Poppy Red Hill travellers LONGSLADE STUDENT Poppy Gordon is this year’s winner of the Elkington Award, presented annually to a college student who has shown dedication to sport and outstanding personal qualities.

The award remembers PE teacher Mark Elkington, an inspirational teacher who died in a motorbike accident in 2009, and is the most prestigious award presented at Longslade’s Sports Presentation evening which celebrates sporting achievement at the college.

Their letter states: “We are the four Charnwood Borough councillors recently elected for Birstall. If we had not seen for ourselves, our attention would have been drawn to the problems of travellers parking on Redhill Island by the many emails, telephone calls and face to face conversations with our locals. This is an on-going problem which generates animosity amongst nearby residents, mountains of litter and a total desecration of the street scene. Given the close proximity of the two dedicated travellers' sites, it seems odd that the problems should still persist.

“When a similar problem occurred on Thurcaston Road at the top of Greengate Lane, an earth bund was put around the site to prevent access. This has now matured and is overgrown with wild flora.

Caravans can no longer be parked there.

What is to prevent similar actions to be taken on Redhill Island? This would appear to be a simple and cheap solution to a major problem.

“Unfortunately this area is within the City limits and not Charnwood Borough's, as was the case with the two new caravan sites.

“Sir Peter promised the residents of Birstall that the new authorised sites would mean the police had greater powers to move unauthorised camps on quickly. This has not materialised and we want that changed. The City Council need to stick to their promise and take action to deal with unauthorised encampments expeditiously, whilst preventing new ones appearing in the area.

City Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby told the Leicester Mercury: “I’ve said that I’ll be willing to look at possible obstacles on Red Hill circle itself only when all three traveller sites [Meynells Gorse, Greengate Lane and Thurcaston Road] are full.

“The improvement work at Meynells Gorse isn’t currently finished, so I am not going to spend a lot of money on obstacles until we have got the full picture.”

Inspirational boxing champion visits gym BRITISH BOXING star and Rio 2016 hopeful Chantelle Cameron visited Carl Gunns gym to help inspire young people from vulnerable families.

Chantelle (24) is British number one at Lightweight and during her visit met young people who have been attending the gym for the last six months as part of the County Council’s Supporting Leicestershire Families (SLF) project.

SLF aims to identify troubled families and turn their lives around using a multi-agency approach and assigning them support workers.

Meera Thakkar, a Family Support Worker, has been bringing fifteen young people aged 8-16 to Carl’s gym for the last six months. She said: “We are working with families to extend their social network, widen their horizons and integrate them into their communities.

These sessions really help the young people tackle low self-esteem.”

Golf club hosts charity event PROFESSIONAL GOLFERS competing at the Midlands PGA Pro Am Tournament at Birstall Golf Club combined with event sponsors The Mark Group to help raise £8,000 for the Air Ambulance Service.

The tournament is one of two events the Midlands PGA holds at Birstall every year, and this year it attracted another top quality field.

Mark Group founder Kathleen Cottingham – who is also a member of the club - says the charity plays a vital role.

“As a company, the Mark Group has hundreds of vehicles on the road every day, and it is very reassuring to know there is such a fabulous service there to help anyone who gets injured. The service has just introduced a specialist service for treating children, so it needs all the support we can give.”

In the event itself, Leicestershire’s former Ryder Cup golfer Paul Broadhurst led his team to victory and tied for top place in the individual tournament as well.

His four man team – which included Dave Mitchell from Kirby Muxloe Golf

Club along with Steve Fellows and Craig Blackford from Redditch – won the team competition on 16 under par.

Broadhurst finished in five under par, tied for first place in the individual competition with Neil Evans from Corby, Northamptonshire.

Other leading Leicestershire players in the individual competition included Ian Lyner (The Leicestershire) and Richard Reed (Glen Gorse), who were involved in a three way tie for fifth place on two under par.

Birstall G C will again host the Mark Group Open – the most valuable event on the Midlands PGA’s Order of Merit – on Thursday and Friday July 30 & 31.

Bats Please allow me to thank everybody who has rung me with records of bats in their areas.

The results to date have been most interesting; there are several from the White Horse (3) area and Worcester Avenue (2), and a scatter of single records from Curzon Avenue, Copeland Road, Greengate Lane and Queensgate Drive. To date, however, I have heard of nothing from Stonehill Avenue.

I am still collecting records from anywhere in Birstall and I may be able to borrow a bat detector if I am lucky later in the year. In the meantime I would still like to hear from anyone in Birstall who has seen bats. My number is 267 6946, there is an ansaphone in case I am out, and all I need to know is the road near where the bats were noticed, if there were many or just a few, and whether they looked large or small.

Unless I am specifically asked I will not trouble anyone with the results, but I will let the editor have a summary.

The Cedars Academy opening celebration will be on September 26. The new build won't quite be finished but we wanted to celebrate the launch of the school just before the good summer weather disappears (we hope!)

We're inviting any community groups from Birstall and Rothley to have a stall to promote their activities - just let me know that you'd like to book a space (sadly we can't provide any gazebos, tables etc, but we'll gladly create a good space for you to set up).

The event runs from 11am-3pm.

All the food and drink for sale on the day will be provided by the academy to help us raise funds to support the students (so it's not possible to have cake stalls etc I'm afraid) but there are lots of other options for you if you'd like to raise funds for your group - games, raffles etc.

We would love to have lots of entertainment running throughout the event, so if you or your group would like to sing or dance or do circus tricks, whatever ... we have space in the theatre for more formal performances and we'll also be creating spaces around the site for more informal busking-style entertainment.

The rugby world cup will have started and we've deliberately avoided match times, but there will be a rugby theme running throughout the day and Birstall Rugby Club might even be playing a match on the field for you to come along and watch.

Young cast shine CHILDREN FROM Birstall and the surrounding villages performed in a show based on the story of Oliver Twist at Groby College in May. ‘Twist’ had a cast of 65 young people aged from 4-16, and was a production of performing arts school Faces Arts.

Fun at school’s summer fete HIGHCLIFFE SCHOOL’S summer fete in June raised more than £2000 for school funds.

The rain did move some events inside for a while but the sun came out and visitors enjoyed a performance from Faces Arts, John Gannon’s karate class and a selection of songs from PTA member Tammie Bartlett.

There was the usual ‘soak a teacher’ a barbecue from Pick’s Organic Farm and bouncy castles from Kaines Castles. The village PCSOs came along with their van, and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue arrived with a fire engine from the Birstall fire station so that children could see what they were like – the firemen were even helping run the tombola at one point!

Paul Ince from the PTA said: “We have had great support from local businesses as always. Particular thanks go to Spencers Estate Agents in the village who provided signs, RK Media Solutions Ltd for providing the sound system, World of LEDs for printing posters and Phat Pack solutions Ltd who provided caricature services to us at no charge.

& crime report RECORDED CRIME has fallen slightly again this month with 32 crimes being reported in May compared with 39 in April, which is obviously good news.

Shop theft however appears to be on the rise again and we will be working with local retailers to try and address this issue.

We have had a number of reports this month about local youths climbing on the roofs of various buildings in the village. We have spoken with some of the youths involved along with their parents about the dangers of doing this which appears to have stopped it for the time being, however there is potential for it to start again, especially once the school holidays start. We have been to some of the locations and given them advice about improving security however please can I ask that you give us

Birstall man jailed A BIRSTALL man who accessed indecent images of children on the internet has been jailed.

Leigh Bedford of Denegate Avenue received a prison sentence of two years and four months at Leicester Crown Court.

Police examined two laptop computers and five CDs seized from the defendant’s home and found 1983 images, with 365 of them in the most serious classification Category A, 818 in category B and 731 in Category C. Almost half the images featured children under five and 14 per cent babies.

68 images involved adults and bestiality.

Leicester Crown Court heard that Bedford (39) had been viewing child pornography for 12 years, and that he had distributed 10 of the images via Skype to two other people between February and August 2013.

Bedford admitted three counts of possessing indecent pictures of children, of which five per cent were moving images, between March 2002 and September 2014.

He also admitted three counts of distribution, one of possessing extreme pornography and one of involving a prohibited pseudo indecent image of a child.

In addition to his prison sentence, Bedford was banned from going abroad without permission on his release, and will be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, which will allow his future computer use to be monitored. His address will be on a police sex offender register for 10 years.

PCSO Butler has been busy this month visiting local Primary Schools and Youth Clubs and giving presentations on AntiSocial Behaviour and the potential consequences of this, as well as giving a ‘Now You are 10’ talk which reminds young people that once they are 10 years old they become responsible in law for their actions. These talks are always well received and also help us to maintain good links with the local schools and young people in the community.

On the subject of PCSO Butler, this month he reached the milestone of 10 years on the Birstall beat, which is no mean feat! Throughout that time he has become a well respected member of the team and community alike and I would like to thank him for the work that he has done on the beat during that time. His knowledge of the area and local people is excellent and I am sure that you will all agree that he has been an asset to the villages of Birstall and Wanlip.

Enjoy your Holiday There was a time when you went on holiday and your friends and family heard little from you apart from a postcard that often arrived after you had got back.

It is very different nowadays with instant messages being sent from almost anywhere in the world although this can have its drawbacks.

If the postcard failed to arrive, those at home were not too worried and blamed the post. But if the regular messages suddenly stop for no apparent reason, it will cause alarm and concern. The most common reason is the theft or loss of your phone or other device. While not the nicest thing to

Café’ s new cooker FUNDS RAISED by the 2014 White Horse Duck Race have been used to buy an electric cooker and a sewing machine at the Birstall Youth Café.

The event raised £1745 for the Youth Café which were handed over immediately after last year’s duck race and in June Charlotte Foy from the White Horse visited the café to meet the young people and officially hand over the cheque.

She said: “It’s great to see the Youth Café going from strength to strength, the money the White Horse Duck race raised last year has provided a new cooker to help the young people learn new skills. Maybe we’ll see some budding chef come through our pub kitchen in the future!”

The cooker is used on Wednesday evenings for cookery lessons and to prepare food that is sold to the young people who use the café.

The sewing machine is used to make craft goods which are sold to raise funds for the café. The duck race funds also helped pay to replace some broken items and to replenish the hair and beauty stock cupboard.

Birstall Parish Council provide the Youth Café and employ the youth workers who run it. It is located in the pavilion in the centre of the School Lane happen, it is preferable to most of the alternatives that your family may be imagining!

So take a few simple precautions to prevent it happening. Crowded holiday resorts, both at home and abroad, are favourite hunting grounds for thieves looking for easy pickings. While we relax and enjoy the sun and local wine, we may be less alert to our surroundings and easy prey to experienced pickpockets and thieves. They are very skilled at using simple tricks to deprive you of your valuables.

So get into the habit of always putting you phones etc. away safely when you are not using them and keep your bags and pockets closed and safe. Be particularly aware of strangers who start talking to you out of the blue.

But if the worst does come to the worst make sure that you have a back-up.

Keeping all your contact details and emergency numbers on your phone is of little use if it is stolen. Make several paper copies of this important information and keep them in different places, such as with your passport and in you suitcase. Until you have to use it, you will never fully appreciate how useful this piece of paper can be.

Gala draws crowds BIRSTALL'S FIFTEENTH annual village gala saw hundreds of people visiting the School Lane playing fields to enjoy the two day event, organised by Birstall Parish Council.

There were dozens of stalls, bands and entertainment and the weekend concluded with a Proms in the Park concert and firework finale. Bands performing on the Saturday included Retro Rocket, Ska-aManga and 8 Miles High.

There were dance performances from Faces Arts and the Steps School of Theatre.

Birstall Parish Council Chairman Ann Marshall said: “We organise the gala as an event where the whole community can get together. We’ve had some lovely feedback, thanking us for putting it on and people that have just moved to the village have said they are thrilled that there is an event like this in Birstall.”

Birstall Girls’ Brigade BIRSTALL GIRLS’ Brigade have been enjoying taking part in events celebrating 100 years of the Girls’ Brigade in Leicestershire.

There has been a Yuletide ball for older girls and ex leaders, ‘Go Kids Go’ for younger girls and a sleepover weekend and a visit to the Black Country museum.

Some of the girls went on the District Camp in May and in June they joined other companies to parade through Leicester City Centre and take part in a service at Bishop Street Methodist Church.

Golf: free coaching JUNIORS AND ladies who want to have a go at golf are being offered free taster sessions and coaching at Birstall Golf Club throughout the summer.

The junior sessions are staged from 3pm on Saturday afternoons, while sessions for ladies are staged on Wednesday evenings starting at 6pm.

Half Pints graduates CHILDREN FROM Half Pints on Loughborough Road celebrated their graduation to ‘big school’ with a party.

They performed a graduation song in front of tearful mums and dads before jumping around on a bouncy castle.

Wartime Britain along the GCR HUNDREDS OF people in 1940’s clothing helped create a special atmosphere at the Great Central Railway’s Wartime Weekend in June.

Birstall station was home to the French with singers, military vehicles and vintage stalls at the Greenacres café.

Rothley was a German base and scene of battle re-enactment with American troops.

Quorn and Loughborough stations were the home of the British, American and French with displays of Bedford trucks, halftracks, jeeps and vintage vehicles.

Event organiser Christine Brown said: “The weekend gives visitors the real chance to experience some of the sights and sounds of wartime Britain.”

Birstall couple Kevin Shepherd and Mary George began their challenge at 2pm on Saturday June 13, playing as a doubles pair against allcomers for 30 minute sessions in return for a donation.

Mary said: “We both thoroughly enjoyed the first 20 hours, they went by in a flash, but the last four hours were really tough and we really started to ache – with me it was my knees and elbow and Kevin had blisters.”

She added: “We had supporters encouraging us for the full 24 hours and that really helped – people were playing us wearing pyjamas and their dressing gowns.” Walking off the court after 24

Group birthday nominated

News from the churches WI’s July marks for most of us the start of the real summer (well, let’s hope). Come what may, the children will be off school and families will be getting ready for their summer holidays.

Likewise, a large party organised by St. James church will be setting off by coach for Scarborough on July 13 for their annual five day break and hopefully, a dose of sun and sea.

Looking further forward, preparations are already being made for the big social event of the year, the St. James Church’s Annual Garden Party on Monday August 31 at 2-4pm on the Church Lawn, Church Hill, Birstall. This year’s chosen charity to benefit will be the Alzheimers’ Society, a cause which touches the lives of many people these days.

There will be some new features at the garden party this year, particularly a number of fun competitions. Do you fancy yourself as a good photographer? Any subject or style will be acceptable, and as in all the events, there are three age-groups : under 10’s, 11 –17years and 18+. You need to bring your entry to St. James church by 5pm on Friday 29th August, for it to be judged by an independent expert.

How about using your imagination to create a fancy dress to wear at the garden party? The only conditions for entry are that you must have made it yourself (NOT hired it!) and the judges must be able to recognise what it’s meant to be! Rosettes will be awarded for the best three in each age group (see above) and judging will take place during the afternoon.

OR, who can make the best cake? All those TV programmes you’ve watched: Nigella, Mary Berry, Bake Off, etc. all making those mouth-watering cakes, must have inspired you to try your hand, either with small cakes (at least 3) or full-size. They too will be judged, in the 3 age-groups, on the afternoon. Please bring your cakes to the church, by 1pm on Monday 31st, labelled with your name and the name of the cake(s) so that rosettes can be awarded by an experienced cake-maker.

Remember that even if the weather is poor the fete will take place in the Church building and teas will be served there all afternoon. There will also be stalls, games, music, ice-cream and much more, so put this date in your diary now.

Builders start work at Methodist Church July should see the start of the work to create a new entrance to the worship area and improvements to the entrance to the rest of the premises. This is the first phase

of the ‘walk-in-the-light’ project. The work is expected to last about three months and it is anticipated that the premises will be available to use throughout, although the entrance via the rear car park will be necessary on frequent occasions. Whilst the work is under way the car park spaces between the two buildings, facing Wanlip Lane, are expected to be out of use. Due to a recently received legacy the new doors into the church can now be fully glazed.

Maintenance Fortnight Even though the building work is not expected to affect the use of the premises, the Annual Maintenance fortnight will close most of the premises for 2 weeks from July 13. During this fortnight volunteers will decorate parts of the premises, and do other work on general upkeep. During this fortnight the Coffee Shop will be closed.

Pit Stop at Methodist Church on Big Yard Day On Saturday July 4 the coffee shop will be open all day for refreshments and light lunches. There is also a Fun Sculpture Exhibition and dance display in the church.

Sikhism at Syston At 3pm on Sunday July 5 at Syston Methodist Church in High Street is ‘A taste of Sikhism’. This takes place in the new café ‘Hub’ at the corner of the Methodist premises. Led by John McCallum, a Christian, it will offer a personal view of faith from a practising Sikh, Kartar Singh Bring.

Lodge Trust Report On Saturday May 30 the Lodge Trust (a Christian charity caring for adults with learning difficulties situated at Market Overton in Rutland) held its Open Day. The car park was soon full and crowds thronged the marquees to admire and purchase the varied craft items (wood crafts, textiles, hanging baskets & plants etc.) made by the residents at The Lodge, together with a rapidly-emptying cake stall, new items and bric-a-brac. The Corby Silver Band played a range of popular music while people relaxed in the sunshine. There were a variety of food outlets and children (and some adults) tested their skills on the games around the field.

In the afternoon, there was a thanksgiving service to mark the completion of the latest building project, The Stables; the speaker was James Muldoon from Carey Baptist Church, Reading.

The Lodge will hold its next Sale of Produce on Saturday November 7 but items can be purchased through the year at the Lodge Country Café, which is open from 8.30am-4.30pm, Monday to Saturday, for refreshments and light meals. There is also holiday accommodation available in the Lodge Country Park: two log cabins for hire and caravan pitches (Camping & Caravanning Clubs certified).

HAVING RECENTLY celebrated their 10th anniversary the Friends of Belgrave Cemetery Group have been nominated for a Belgrave volunteer award.

BIRSTALL AND WANLIP WI commenced an amazing celebratory week with their 97th Birthday Party at the Red Lion in Rothley on June 1.

30 ladies raised the pub roof with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem, hats and fascinators abounded and we made a colourful company of ladies.

The next day Beverley Blackburn and Christine Burne attended the WI Centenary afternoon tea at Buckingham Palace in the presence of the Countesses of Cornwall and Wessex.

On June 4 Maxilyn had a wonderful day at the NFWI Centenary Annual Meeting at the Albert Hall in the presence of the Queen, Princess Ann and Sophie, Countess of Wessex and hundreds of representatives from WI’s across the country. The sun shone, so lunchtime saw many of the ladies spill into Hyde Park for a picnic lunch.

The Royals were in happy and relaxed moods as the Queen had difficulty in cutting the celebration cake and Princess Anne had to help.

Everyone was given a piece of the cake on leaving and apparently it was very rich and alcoholic.

Our next Meeting is on July 6 where we will hear about Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulances and Children’s Ambulances. The competition will be a petite teacup and saucer arrangement.

Birstall BAG’s cancer corner Immunotherapy Cancer treatment has generally involved surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy either individually or in combination with one another. In addition for a select number of cancer types, hormone treatment has also become quite routine. Recently however there have been a number of exciting media stories about advances in cancer treatment involving a previously unheard of treatment modality Immunotherapy. This kind or treatment is making encouraging strides forward in the ‘war on cancer’ and Birstall BAG’s would like to help readers understand a little more about this promising treatment.

Many types of cancer treatments can be thought of as immunotherapy.

Some stimulate your own immune system to fight the disease. This can be done either by boosting the immune system in a very general way, or by training the immune system to attack some part of cancer cells specifically.

Other immunotherapy treatments sometimes thought of as immunotherapy use immune system components (such as proteins called antibodies) that are made in the lab. Some of them boost the

immune system once they are in the body. Others don’t really affect the immune system much, if at all. Instead, the antibodies themselves target certain proteins that help cancer cells grow. By binding to these proteins, the antibodies stop cancer cells from growing or make them die. These types of antibodies are also known as targeted therapy.

The main types of immunotherapy now being used to treat cancer are: • Monoclonal antibodies: These are man-made versions of immune system proteins. Antibodies can be very useful in treating cancer because they can be designed to attack a very specific part of a cancer cell.

• Cancer vaccines: Vaccines are substances put into the body to start an immune response against certain diseases. We usually think of them as being given to healthy people to help prevent infections. But some vaccines can help prevent or treat cancer.

• Non-specific immunotherapies: These treatments boost the immune system in a general way, but this can still help the immune system attack cancer cells.
