OF BIRMINGHAM PARENT’S FAMILY FAVORITES AWARDS

ASSOCIATE EDITOR Lori Chandler Pruitt

Now in our 12th year, the Birmingham Parent’s Family Favorites Awards are back and as popular as ever! People covet the honor, ask their clients, friends and family to vote, put up signs and put links on their social media and websites to get folks to go and vote for their business, practice or service. This year we had a record number of votes, and it’s all about YOU and what your favorites are! We don’t nominate anyone – the contest is completely reader driven, and whoever wins, wins. If a business receives an Honorable Mention, it was because the voting was close. It’s not OUR favorites – it’s YOURS. This year there are a number of surprises and new winners, along with a few new categories. We hope you’ll keep this guide all year and use it when you need to make a decision about a purchase, doctor, trip or whatever your family needs help with. Just like last year, we’ve organized the winners into categories to make it easier to find everyone, and you can also access it by digital edition at www.birminghamparent.com any time. And remember, the NEXT voting for Family Favorites 2019 begins in January. Be watching so you can tell your clients, family and friends to vote for your business! Don’t miss the 2nd Annual Preschool Little Learners Guide, starting on page 32. We’ve got some great stories about your preschooler and a handy guide to preschools and related businesses. And, be sure to save the date for our next event, the Happy Healthy Kids Fair on Aug. 25, 2018 at Riverchase Galleria from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Joe Lockett will be there with a great new promotion, a teachers’ supplies giveaway! Christy Pierce Photography will make free COVER KIDS HEAD SHOTS that day, and of course, we have a great line up of local entertainment, vendors with great products and services and wonderful giveaways. Be sure to be there early – the first 200 people at the Birmingham Parent booth get a free swag bag with coupons and hidden prizes!

PAR E N TI N G

Parenting with Dr. Friedman

Q:

My 2-year-old son is in perpetual motion. I can’t seem to get any housework done because if I take my eyes off him, he finds a crayon and colors on the

walls, or I find him on top of a chair reaching for the cookies on top of the refrigerator. Do you think he is hyperactive? Should he be put on medicine at so young an age? All toddlers are active. Because they are also lacking in judgment about what might be harmful to them, they require the constant supervision of a parent. It is difficult for the parent of a toddler to get anything done during the waking hours of a young child’s day. Most moms clean house while their child naps. Your son might be active above and beyond the normal high activity level of a typical toddler. Yet few pediatricians would be willing to medicate a child at so young an age. You might want to consult a child psychiatrist to learn some behavioral methods of intervention. Alternatively or additionally, you might want to try to channel your son’s energy. Take him outside in your yard to play or take him to a playground. Encourage him to dance to music. Consider letting him walk in the grocery store rather than riding in the cart if you think he can walk without pulling something down on himself. Tire him out so that he will nap soundly, giving you a break in the day. Put off projects around the house until he is older or save them for times when you have someone else to watch him. Accept that this is a stage of life when your focus is on raising your child. There will be time

for other things later when he is in school. Toddlers are delightful and this stage goes by very quickly. Most moms grow to miss the cute toddler stage when it passes. That doesn’t mean that it is easy. Keep him near you while you work. If you are cooking dinner, give him a pot or two and some blocks. He will most likely enjoy loading and unloading his pots. Encourage fantasy play by telling him that he is “cooking.” Avoid flashy, short-segmented TV shows or videos. Calmer shows might hold his attention and encourage him to pay attention. Yet don’t use the TV excessively. Most studies show that children who watch several hours of TV per day have a shorter attention span and lower school achievement. Child proof your home. Knickknacks can be added when he is older. For now, clear the coffee table and put away the crayons. It takes less energy to alter the environment than to constantly redirect a toddler. Medication is used for toddlers when the potential side effects of the drugs are less than the risk of harm to the child from his behavior. One notable two-year-old was reported to have been found by his parents up on their roof trying to see how Santa got down the chimney. This child was medicated by a child

psychiatrist, as it was felt that he was in danger of harming himself despite the vigilance of his competent parents. Invite family members and paid sitters to care for your child so that you can have an occasional break. Active children can be exhausting for one solo caretaker. Induce calm by holding your son on your lap to read or by rocking him at bedtime. Be sure that he sleeps in his own bed so that he learns to soothe himself and make the transition from awake to asleep. This toddler stage will pass. Although he might continue to be very active, his judgment will increase, reducing the need for your constant vigilance. Vivian K. UAB Wins first Emmy Award UAB’s Division of University Relations won the school’s first Emmy award for Outstanding SportsFeature Segment at the 2018 Southeast Regional Emmy awards, held in Atlanta in June. The entry, “More than a Game” showcased the lasting impact of UAB football’s partnership with Children’s Harbor. The video and storytelling, captured, written, edited and told by Laura Thomas, Jeff Myers and Andrea Reiber showcased the October 7, 2017 UAB vs. Louisiana Tech football game at Legion Field. Football players suited up in specially designed uniforms for the game, all featuring the name of a Children’s Harbor patient on the back. Weeks before the game, UAB’s Visual Content team worked with patient families, UAB Coach Bill Clark and several players on the story. The group’s work is featured on the UAB YouTube channel. “This award is a testament to the professionalism and hard work by the University Relations visual content team,” says Reiber, executive director of the group. “The videography, editing and storytelling by Jeff and Laura resulted in a beautifully illustrated video that demonstrates the spirit of determination and energy of this university, and it is just one example of the wonderful stories yet to be told.” The highly competitive Regional Southeast Emmy Chapter is one of 19 throughout the U.S. identifying and celebrating television excellence at the local and regional levels. The Southeast chapter represents television professionals from all disciplines of the industry and from markets in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina and Asheville, NC.

SHERIFF’S CORNER:

Fire Safety Tips for the Home By JEFFCO Sheriff Mike Hale

Fire disasters occur in residential homes every 79 seconds. Smoke alarms are one of the most effective fire safety precautions you can take, saving lives and protecting your home. You should install smoke alarms inside each bedroom and in the hallways, in the kitchen and at every level of the house, including the basement. Follow all the manufacturer’s instructions for proper installation and testing of each unit. In the event of a fire, every second counts. Having an escape plan for you and your family can save your lives. Rehearse it and make sure everyone understands the plan. Outdoor cooking, along with improper use of fireworks, causes over 6,000 fires every year. These safety precautions will allow you to enjoy summer barbeques, camping trips and Forth of July celebrations free from fire disasters. Fireworks — Use only legal fireworks; never light them indoors or near grass. Adhere to all directions and warnings. Barbeques and Outdoor Grilling — Do not overfill propane tank and check connection to fuel line. Do not add lighter fluid to a lit fire. Dispose of hot coals properly. Make sure everyone knows the Stop, Drop and Roll rule. Campfire Safety — Build campfires away from dry grass and leaves, preferably in the camp’s designated areas. Keep an eye on campfires at all times and keep them small. Have plenty of water handy and a shovel on hand to douse the fire. Enjoy your summer and stay safe!

FAMILY FAVORITES AWARD WINNERS Compiled by Lori Chandler Pruitt and Bethany Adams Hunley

We all have our favorites – favorite beach, favorite frozen yogurt, favorite dentist and doctor, favorite radio station. But sometimes we rely on friends and family to give us other suggestions about what they know to be good and what THEIR favorites are. You may be introduced to a favorite by word of mouth, or see an ad for a spot, go there and then share with all your friends how great it is. This is what the Birmingham Parent Family Favorites Awards is all about. The longest 10 | birminghamparent | july 2018

running contest of its sort in the Birmingham area, we do it totally with you and for you. You nominate and choose the winners. And we’ve got a few new categories this year! It’s an open forum – you did the nominating and the voting. We’ve tallied the numbers and following are the results. In cases where voting was really close, there is an “honorable mention” or two. We’ve also grouped the winners into easy categories for you. We hope you will keep this list all year for great things to do and places to go in

Birmingham, and if you have a favorite that didn’t make the list this year, be sure to vote for them in 2019! You can easily access this list all year at www.birminghamparent.com. Be sure you tell the winners that you read about them in Birmingham Parent! And congrats to our random prize winner, Jerad Goodwin of Birmingham, who won a terrific trip for 4 to the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Florida, our travel sponsor.

Does My Toddler Need Glasses? KEEPING AN EYE ON YOUR TODDLER’S VISION By Stephanie Rodda

The gift of sight is no doubt one of the most valuable gifts we can ever receive. We cherish our eyesight, and yet eye health is sometimes overlooked and neglected. Parenting may bring about many questions about eye care that haven’t previously crossed our mind.

32 | birminghamparent | july 2018

When it comes to our children, we may sometimes be unsure as to what signs to watch for and when to be concerned that there may be a problem that needs to be examined. Our older children might be able to verbalize the trouble they’re having, while our younger children may communicate their needs differently. Local pediatric optometrists Rena C. Lewis, O.D. of Narrows Eye Care and Calah Ray, O.D. of Vestavia Eye Care answer our questions about what to look for and when to bring a child for eye care.

binocular vision (eye teaming) will hinder development of stereopsis (depth perception), may cause developmental delays, and will impair early reading skills such as letter recognition.”

Question-Circle How do we know when our toddler needs

Ray – “If the infant is symptom-free and there is no family history of eye problems, I recommend the first comprehensive eye exam be performed around nine months of age and then every two years or more frequently if indicated.” Ray also shared information about the InfantSEE program, a public health program administered by the AOA Foundation. They provide a free comprehensive eye exam to infants between 6 and 12 months of age. More information, including a list of participating optometrists, can be found at www. infantsee.org.

glasses?

Lewis – “Infants and toddlers show several non-verbal cues to indicate vision problems. A youngster with nearsightedness (myopia) may get very close to the TV or hold objects close to his/her face. A child with excessive farsightedness (hyperopia) will have trouble focusing at near or will cross his/her eyes when looking at a near target. If a toddler sees better out of one eye, he/she may close the blurry eye or turn his/her head to favor the better seeing eye.” Ray – “Toddlers aren’t always able to communicate verbally. I advise parents to monitor for squinting, eye rubbing when not tired, an eye turn which persists past six months of age, and developmental delays. If any of these are present, a comprehensive eye examination including dilation is indicated. However, in infants and toddlers, many eye related conditions are asymptomatic. For example, a child with a significantly unequal glasses prescription (i.e. one eye needs glasses but the other does not) often displays no symptoms because the “good eye” is compensating for the “weak eye.” In this situation, parents are often surprised to learn their child needs glasses because he or she seems to see well.”

Question-Circle What about the importance of early detection? Does it make a significant difference?

Lewis – “The earlier an optometrist detects a vision problem in a child, the better the outcome. Vision is a learned response. If you don’t use it, you lose it. The lack of stimulating the visual pathway is the process that cause amblyopia (lazy eye). Thankfully, early detection and treatment of eye problems in infants and toddlers typically has a very good prognosis.” Ray – “Early detection and treatment are crucial for achieving the best possible visual outcome. Throughout the infant and toddler years, vision is developing rapidly. In order for vision to develop properly, each eye must have a focused image on the retina, the eyes must point in the same direction, and visual cortex must process the information properly. A breakdown in one of these areas can cause lifelong impact on vision and learning. Uncorrected significant refractive error (glasses prescription) in an infant and toddler will translate to blurry vision (even with glasses) as an adult; this is called amblyopia. Additionally, blurry vision and/or inaccurate

Question-Circle What age is recommended for a first exam even when no problems are detected?

Lewis – “The Alabama Optometric Association recommends comprehensive eye exams for non-risk children at 6 months, 3 years and prior to starting first grade.”

Question-Circle What about family medical history and eye health issues?

Lewis – A family history of getting glasses at an early age, strabismus, amblyopia, congenital cataracts, retinoblastoma or genetic disease puts a child in a higher risk category. An infection such as herpes, cytomegalovirus, toxoplasmosis and HIV may be passed to a baby during pregnancy and affect the eyes. Other high-risk factors for infants and toddlers include prematurely, oxygen at birth and central nervous system dysfunction. Ray – A family history of strabismus (eye turn) or amblyopia (vision not correctable to 20/20) may increase the child’s chance of having the condition and warrants further investigation. However, many pediatric eye problems occur in children with no family history of the condition. An in-person, comprehensive eye exam including dilation is the most accurate way to fully assess the developing visual system of infants and toddlers.

Toddlers aren’t always able to communicate verbally. I advise parents to monitor for squinting, eye rubbing when not tired, an eye turn which persists past six months of age, and developmental delays.

Being aware of the signs and symptoms indicating eye health issues is the best place to begin. Consulting with your optometrist about any concerns you may have should be the next step. Thankfully, due to medical and scientific advancement, there are often multiple resources to help you feel confident that your child is seeing clearly and comfortably. After, all there is nothing quite as wonderful as the way a child sees the world. Stephanie Rodda lives with her husband and children in the Birmingham area. She is an author and freelance writer. DON’T LEAVE ME! 10 WAYS TO MAKE DROP OFF EASIER By Rachael Moshman

“Don’t leave me! NO! Please! Mommy! Mommy, don’t go!” Sound familiar? Separation anxiety is a normal part of child development. Babies and toddlers will often scream when it is time for Mommy or Daddy to hand them off to the caregiver, even if it is a familiar routine. It is also normal for preschoolers or young school-age children to become tearful or clingy when starting a new school or returning after a break. Seeing their child so upset often results in a very guilty and stressed out parent. Many parents make the separation even more upsetting to their child without realizing it. I have worked with young children and families for more than 20 years and have witnessed thousands (maybe millions!) of drop offs. Here are some tips for making drop off less stressful for everyone:

Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Build familiarity. Bring your child to the facility before their first day. Let them see the caregivers or teachers, other children, play areas and materials. Arrange for them to visit several times, if possible, with the duration increasing slightly with each visit.

Seeing their child so upset often results in a very guilty and stressed out parent. Many parents make the separation even more upsetting to their child without realizing it.

Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Tell your child what to expect. Read storybooks about children who go to a babysitter, daycare or school. Let your child know where you’ll be while you’re away and when you’ll be back. Make sure they know who will be looking after them. Walk them through the day. For example, say, “After I walk you to your class room I am going to go to work. I packed you ham and cheese for lunch today! After nap, you’ll go on the playground and I’ll be back to pick you up at 3.” Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Don’t sneak out. I’ve seen many parents wait until their child looks away and then rush out the door without a goodbye. When the child realizes this, they often become even more upset than they were originally and it takes longer to calm them down. Let your child know you’re leaving instead of sneaking away. Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Be quick. Don’t prolong the goodbye. This doesn’t mean you should push them out of the car and drive off either! Establish a routine, such as you leave after you help your child hang up their backpack. Then give them a cheerful hug, kiss and goodbye and head out. Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Keep going. Say goodbye and then go. Tara, a mom of three, says, “I was a mess when I first sent my oldest child to daycare. I would listen outside the door and if she was still crying after 30 seconds, I headed right back in to comfort her. We’d do this half a dozen times or more some mornings. After several months the director urged me to wait longer. She stood with me and urged me to be patient. My daughter screamed for three minutes and stopped. I continued listening at the door and the crying decreased to mere seconds – if she cried at all!” Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Call to check in. If you’re worried, call or email the caregiver, director or teacher to check on your child. Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Return on time. When you come back when you say you will, your child will begin to understand that you’ll always return to them. If you’re going to be late, call the facility and emphasis that the message be explained to your child. Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Stay calm. Your child senses when you’re upset. If you are feeling guilty, frustrated or sad, they will feed off of your emotions. Stay calm and upbeat at both drop off and pick up times. Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Rinse and repeat. Stay consistent. Routines help children feel safe. Try to stick to the same schedule every morning. Arrow-Alt-Circle-Right Be patient. Don’t throw in the towel if your child is still crying after a week. If you are happy with everything else about the caregiver or school, give it some time. It can take several weeks for a child to adjust to a new situation. However, trust your instincts. If your child’s reluctance to part from you is very out of character, there could be a situation with the caregiver, teacher or environment causing them stress. Remember that like most childhood phases, this too shall pass. However, if drop off causes your child intense and prolonged emotional distress, they may be suffering from separation anxiety disorder. According to kidshealth.org, separation anxiety disorder is rare, but can last into elementary school and beyond. Characteristics include a reluctance to sleep alone, loss of appetite, nightmares and panic attacks. If your child is excessively fearful of being separated from you, talk to their pediatrician. PINT-SIZED PURSUITS: ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR THE PRESCHOOL CROWD By Sarah Lyons

Providing extracurricular activities for your preschooler can encourage their natural curiosity and love of learning. It can also help them develop important skills like self-awareness, social development, language, and motor skills. There are countless classes and programs available for your child that are both fun and educational, but which activity is right for your child?

Team Sports Team sports help kids with their social development, as well as problem solving skills. Being part of a team also gives kids a sense of confidence as they have the opportunity to cheer each other on and contribute to the common goal. “Soccer seems to be a good place to start. It gets them used to the idea of team sports.” says Kara Thomas, mom and preschool teacher. Another preschool-friendly team sport is T-ball. Team sports are a good fit for your child if they love physical activity and socializing with other kids. Art An art class provides the opportunity for kids to create, make messes, and try crafts that their parents may not want to try at home such as painting and sculpture. Art helps develop hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, and encourages kids to explore different colors, textures, while encouraging their creativity. Kids who are introverted, creative, and can sit still for longer periods of time would enjoy an art class. Music and Dance Preschool kids love to listen to music and dance. There are many programs available that offer enrichment in music where kids are encouraged to sing, make their own music, and use their bodies to express themselves through dance. Many dance studios offer beginner classes for the preschool crowd. The study of music and dance helps kids develop their gross motor skills, language, and even improve their math and reading skills down the line. (www. pbs.org) Music classes are a good fit for any preschooler but kids who are naturally drawn to music and movement in particular should look into music classes such as Gymboree or Music with Mar which are geared towards preschool children specifically. Preschool and Playgroups Traditional preschool exposes children to many different types of enrichment such as art, music, games, cooperative play, drama/pretend play, as well as social and language skills. While preschool may provide a well-rounded enrichment experience, it may not be a good fit for some families due to schedules or finances. Play groups are another great

Individual Sports “I think dance or tumbling is a really good first organized activity for kids,” says Angela Leever, mom of three and preschool special education teacher. “You want to make sure you get them into an activity where the instructors are used to working with young children and their expectations are age appropriate.” Gymnastics, swimming, and martial arts are great sports activities for little ones to try because they work on their core strength and confidence. Kids who love to be active and are maybe even a little daring do great in these individual sports. The wonderful thing about preschool enrichment is that there are several programs and opportunities, and there also are countless chances to expose your kids to learning at home as well, such as gardening and cooking. Kids can learn by helping with chores around the house, exploring parks and museums and even visiting the local library. Get creative, make learning fun, and allow your child to explore and try new things both in organized programs and at home.

PRESCHOOL ENRICHMENT AT HOME You do not have to spend a fortune on classes to give your kids great enrichment experiences. Here’s some ideas to incorporate at home or explore in your community. Gross motor skills: visit a park, play in the backyard, create an obstacle course using household objects, or have a family dance party Fine motor skills: create a sensory bin, play with puzzles or blocks, allow your kids to draw and practice with scissors Language: sing, read, and use cooperative play Social development: host playdates, explore the city, go on a scavenger hunt Self-awareness: dress up, cook, have them help with chores and gardening

Patriotism By Sean Dietrich

Dear Sean: The nation is going down the toilet, bro, and it is people like you (no offense) who are inadvertently doing more harm than

good. I don’t mean to be a hater, but Americans suck right now, dude. I know you mean well, but nothing’s going to change if you keep writing little candycoated vignettes and ignore our problems. Thanks, NOT FEELING VERY PATRIOTIC THIS YEAR BRO

Sean Dietrich is a columnist, and novelist, known for his commentary on life in the American South. His work has appeared in Southern Living, The Tallahassee Democrat, Good Grit, South Magazine, Yellowhammer News, the Bitter Southerner, Thom Magazine, The Mobile Press Register, and he has authored seven books. Select columns from his daily column, “Sean of the South,” will now be printed each month in Birmingham Parent. His opinions are his own, and we are thrilled to have him be a part of the Birmingham Parent family. This month, he answers a question from a reader about patriotism.

40 | birminghamparent | july 2018

Dear Unpatriotic: A few candy-coated vignettes for you: Meet Mary – single mother with three kids. Her husband shot himself with a hunting rifle after serving in Iraq. She goes to baseball games, soccer games, piano recitals, 4H Club, Girl Scouts, and still finds time to make supper. She works as a receptionist, and helps her brother-in-law landscape on weekends. “Some days I don’t know if I’m gonna cry or scream,” she told me. “I keep telling myself, God’s gonna gimme strength.” Here’s some more candy-coating: John. Guitarist and singer. He’s played in small bars since high school. His father called John a “loser,” and “lazy.” Not true. John met a girl. A dental assistant, attending school to become a dentist. Her parents are immigrants, she doesn’t have much money. They got married. John gave up music to work three jobs and fund her tuition. “I spend my days on scaffolding,” said John. “Painting commercial buildings, and part-time with an electrician, man I’m hauling it, but I love her.” God bless love. Another: I’ll call her Candy – that seems appropriate. She met a man. She was a hairdresser, he was military. He got deployed. There was an incident. Now he has a prosthetic leg. She had children with him. They’ve gone through hell. Today, he stays at home, caring for kids, packing lunches, kissing scraped knees. She cuts hair. “You wouldn’t believe our cool life,” says Candy. “Having kids has actually healed my husband’s heart.” Her oldest brought her husband to classroom career day. It had been a long time since he wore his old uniform. He told his story and made his forefathers proud. How about Don: A white-haired mechanic who’s had grease under his fingernails since his teens. And for almost that long, he’s driven he same ugly Ford. The vehicle finally gave up the ghost. Don junked the truck and has been hitching rides. On his birthday: a catered Dunkin Donuts breakfast, greeting cards, balloons, and something else. His coworkers led him outside, blindfolded. A red Ford Ranger with fifty-seven thousand miles. Wrapped in a big ribbon. Anyway, you have every right to not like where this country is going, friend. And who am I to tell you how to feel about your own country? But when those fireworks go off on the Fourth of July, I’ll be watching. And thinking. Thinking about single mothers, mechanics, dental students, pain-pill addicts, homeless drunks, county prisoners, veteran amputees, immigrant students, preachers, burnt-out bartenders, football coaches, nurses, electricians, factory workers, janitors, writers. You. And my granddaddy, who fought hard just to pay bills, turn soil, and forget the War that changed him. I’m talking about ordinary people. Americans. I’m sorry you don’t feel patriotic this year. But as for me, I am proud. Bro.

t o N s I d e R . r o l o C r u o Y Put On Your Sunscreen! • Use sunscreen with SPF of 30 or higher! • Make sure your sunscreen has both UVA and UVB protection. • Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before going outside and remember to reapply after swimming or sweating. • Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your face, head, ears and neck. • Wear sunglasses that are made to block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

• Limit exposure to the sun during the hours of 10 am to 4 pm, when UV rays are most intense. • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. • One person dies of melanoma every hour. • One blistering sunburn in childhood can double your chances of developing melanoma.

Avoid the Risks of Skin Cancer This Summer By Dr. Greg Bourgeois

Summertime means it’s time to enjoy tons of activities out in the sun, but remember when under the sun, there are risks to our skin from sun damage if we are not careful: painful sunburns, accumulative sun damage in the form of wrinkles and brown spots, and deadly skin cancers. In fact the most common form of cancer is skin cancer. Although there are many forms of skin cancer, the most common skin cancers are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Basal and squamous cell carcinoma are by far more common than melanoma and tend to be easily treatable at early stages without the risk of spreading throughout the body. On the other hand, melanoma, although not as common as the aforementioned skin cancers, can be very deadly by spreading throughout the body. The best way to detect these skin cancers is to be vigilant in checking your own skin, and if there is a spot that appears suspicious to you, please find a board-certified dermatologist to check it out. The cause of these skin cancers is the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This radiation is the most preventable risk factor associated with skin cancer. There are four essential ways to protect ourselves from the sun’s UV rays: n Avoid the sun especially during peak hours of 10 AM to 2 PM n Seek shade when available (or create it with an umbrella on the beach!) n Sun protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses n Sunscreen

There are so many varieties of sunscreen out there, so in order to receive the best protection from damaging UV rays, choose a sunscreen that is labeled broad-spectrum (which means it has passed tests showing protection against both UVA and UVB radiation from the sun) and is an SPF of 30 or greater. For little ones older than 6 months, the broad-spectrum, sensitive skin sunscreens are best. If younger than 6 months old, do not use sunscreen; instead, avoid sun exposure by both providing complete shade and wearing clothing. And remember to reapply your sunscreen if outside for multiple hours or after getting out of the water. Summer is meant for us to enjoy, and being outside in the sun provides much of the enjoyment. Please enjoy it safely by protecting your and your family’s skin from potential damage from the sun.

Parents Need Estate Plans By Melanie B. Holliman, Estate Planning & Special Needs Attorney, Executive Director of Alabama Family Trust

Parents are often so busy raising their children that they forget to have a plan in place in case of the parents’ deaths. Tragedy happens. If one or both parents die, who will have the legal authority to care for the children? Are there family members that may fight each other to become guardians of the children? Are there family members that may think taking care of the children means free access to all assets that you left for the children? Are there family members that are better suited to provide care for the children but are not good managing money? These are only a few of the questions that must be answered before tragedy strikes one or both parents. Last Will and Testament and Living Trust: You need to decide if you want an estate plan that uses a Last Will and Testament; or, if you want to use a Living Trust that avoids the probate system at death. Young families often choose

Wills; but, the choice depends on your desire for speed and privacy of matters at death. Name a Guardian: With minor children, you must name a guardian that can care for your children if both parents are deceased or unable to care for the children. If possible, name an alternate guardian in case your first choice for guardian cannot take on the role. If you fail to name a guardian, the court decides who should be the guardian. Name a Trustee: If you do not have a trustee to manage assets for the children at your death, Alabama law will name a Conservator to monitor the assets until the children turn 19 years of age. Having a trustee eliminates the need for a Conservator and the constant court supervision. Further, the trustee can keep the assets under control for as long as you designate. After all, how many young people will handle an inheritance wisely at 19 years of age?

What Happens if You become Disabled: You also need to think about naming a power of attorney that can act for you in making financial and healthcare decisions if you become disabled. Even if the disability is only temporary, who will direct your family and make sure all needs are met if you cannot. Don’t procrastinate. Talk with an experienced estate planning attorney and be the one to decide your family’s future.

Although this article is only intended as educational information and is not to be taken as legal advice, the Alabama State Bar requires the following in any communication that may be interpreted as an advertisement: “No representation is made about the quality of legal services to be performed is greater than the quality of legal services performed by other lawyers.”

Plan Your Tomorrows Today Today is a good time to plan ahead for your estate and family members with special needs. John R. Holliman, JD and Melanie B. Holliman, JD can help you plan your tomorrows.

Check Out the Butterflies

at the Annual Festival in Dunwoody in August Photo courtesy of the Dunwoody Butterfly Festival

The annual Butterfly Festival in Dunwoody, GA is a family favorite. During the festival, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, August 12, three enormous tents are set up at the Dunwoody Nature Center and filled with gorgeous freeroaming butterflies for families to venture inside and explore, first receiving instructions to ensure the safety of the friendly insects. The festival also includes a Birds of Prey show, a showcase of reptiles and other live animal encounters. Educational booths, arts and crafts activities, and live music complete the festival for adults and children to enjoy. Participate in a nature scavenger hunt and find hidden treasures within Dunwoody Park, enjoy getting your face painted like a butterfly, and other entertainment all day long. On-site concessions include the festival’s signature “larval lemonade.” Tickets are on sale at http://dunwoodynature.org/butterfly/.

Ocean Conservancy Releases Weird Finds around the World “You would be amazed at what volunteers find every year along beaches and waterways,” says Allison Schutes, associate director of Ocean Conservancy’s Trash Free Seas® program. “No matter where you are in the world, chances are you’ll see plastic bottles, bottle caps, straws, packaging… then you get items where you just have to wonder, ‘how did this get here?’”

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) is a joint research project between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Alabama Department of Public Health. Its purpose is to determine why some babies are born healthy and others are not in order to aid in the development and assessment of programs designed to identify high-risk pregnancies and reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes. New mothers are randomly chosen from the state birth registry to participate in PRAMS. Surveys may be returned by mail or completed over the phone. Let your voice be heard!

clouds The summer sky is full of wonder Everywhere you go. Each morning, noon, and night The clouds put on a show!

MORNING CLOUDS Each morning clouds put on a show Across the summer sky. They fill our eyes with fairy tales Whenever they pass by. Some look like boats and sailing ships. Sometimes a swan or queen. The sky is full of fantasy. It’s nature’s movie screen. Come see the many magic scenes In heaven’s demonstration. It only takes a glance on high— And your imagination. — ©Charles Ghigna

EVENING CLOUDS Like silver sails on silver ships
A fleet of clouds floats by then slips Into its Milky Way lagoon Beneath the lighthouse of the moon. — ©Charles Ghigna
